High atop a cliff T

hroughout history, the lighthouse of Ponta do Pargo has come to gain a notoriety of its own as a landmark in the Calheta municipality. Located in Madeira Island’s western most coast, this lighthouse is an obvious reference point for those at sea and a definite must for those visiting Ponta do Pargo.

And this year is its 95th birthday. The tower that nowadays stands at 14 metres high was built back in June 5th, 1922. At first sight its height may not sound that impressive, after all, Portugal’s highest lighthouse, in Aveiro, is 66 metres high.

However, if you factor in its height in relation to the level of the sea, the lighthouse at Ponta do Pargo takes the highest spot in the podium, standing at a total 312 metres of altitude.

In constant dialogue with the sea and with a reach of 26 miles, this lighthouse is impressive, not in the least for its contrast with the surrounding environment and it is one of the most visited spots in that part of the island.

In 2001, a small museum area was added to the lighthouse. According to data from the Maritime Authority, nearly 11 thousand people visited the lighthouse in 2015. Getting to know the lighthouses of the Region, current and past, is one of the reasons why this spot is so attractive to visitors. 쐽

farol da Ponta do Pargo, no extremo ocidental da ilha da Madeira, adquiriu, ao longo da sua história, um estatuto de exlibris da pequena freguesia do concelho da Calheta, sendo uma referência para quem está no mar e um ponto de visita obrigatório para quem passa pela Ponta do Pargo.

até aos 14 metros de altura. O tamanho do farol não impressiona quando comparado com o do mais alto de Portugal: o farol da Barra, em Aveiro, conta com 66 metros de altura. No entanto, se tivermos em conta sua a relação ao nível do mar, o da Ponta do Pargo conquista o mais alto lugar do pódio, pois situa-se a 312 metros de altitude.

Em constante diálogo com o mar e com um alcance de 26 milhas, o farol impressiona pela sua imponência e contraste com o ambiente que o rodeia. É um dos locais mais visitados daquela zona da ilha.

Em 2001 foi criado no farol um pequeno núcleo museológico pelo qual passaram, segundo a Capitania do Porto do Funchal, quase 11 mil pessoas em 2015. Conhecer os faróis em atividade na Região, tal como os que já existiram, são alguns dos motivos de atração deste local. 쐽

The Artisans Shop of Madeira M

adeira’s Artisans Shop, inaugurated in May by the Institute for Wine, Embroidery and Crafts in Madeira, was created to commercialise genuine Madeiran products. The goal is to divulge the History and Culture of local populations.

This project makes a difference in the wider commercial scene as it employs artisans certified by the Qualification Institute and its manager, Alexandre Sousa, notes the excellence of the space. It was born out of a need to ‘create synergies that enable the promotion and commercialisation of artisanal products from the Region’.

Bearing designer Nini Andrade Silva’s signature, the shop stands out for a modern and minimalist contour, establishing symbiosis with traditional Madeiran products. Also encompassed by the project is a crafts workshop divided into three areas, one dedicated to ceramics, another to woodworks and the third being meant for free creative work.

Sporting a bold agenda, the project as whole sports the goal of promoting traditional crafts through workshops open to the public in general and will also have ‘temporary cultural exhibitions that allow for the pro-

motion of different cultural currents in the region’.

The Artisans Shop strives to become ‘an attraction’ not only for visitors but also for residents where each product reveals a bit of the Madeiran roots. It can be visited Mondays to Fridays during working days in Rua dos Ferreiros, in Funchal. 쐽

Loja do Artesanato da Madeira, inaugurada em maio pelo Instituto do Vinho, do Bordado e do Artesanato da Madeira, foi criada para comercializar produtos genuínos madeirenses. A missão é dar a conhecer a História e a Cultura das populações locais.

Diferenciando-se pela aposta em artesãos certificados pelo Instituto para a Qualificação, Alexandre Sousa, responsável pelo projeto, caracteriza o espaço como de excelência.

Nascido de uma necessidade de “criar sinergias que facilitassem a divulgação e comercialização dos produtos artesanais produzidos na Região”.

Com a assinatura da designer Nini Andrade Silva, a loja distingue-se por uma linha moderna e minimalista, que se envolve em modo de simbiose com os produtos tradicionais madeirenses. O projeto partilha ainda de uma oficina de artesanato, dividida em três áreas distintas, dedicadas à cerâmica, madeiras e uma zona de trabalho livre.

Com uma agenda arrojada, o projeto assume ainda a função de promover as artes tradicionais através de workshops abertos ao público em geral e aposta em“exposições temporárias de cariz cultural que permitam divulgar as diferentes correntes culturais da região”.

A Loja do Artesanato espera tornar-se um “ponto de atração” não só para visitantes, mas também residentes, onde cada produto desvenda um pouco mais sobre as raízes madeirenses. Pode ser visitada de segunda à sexta-feira, em horário de expediente, na Rua dos Ferreiros, no Funchal. 쐽

or the second year in a row, the bay of Funchal serves as the stage for another act of the Extreme Sailing Series.

Between June 29th and July 2nd, some of the world’s best sailors will be showing off their skills. A total 22 vessels will be vying for the top in Funchal, including a Portuguese team with two athletes.

The event’s official web page points to the Marina of Funchal as the site where the Race Village will be and as one of the best spots from which to watch the competition’s third act. The organisers refer to Funchal as a city ‘bursting with culture and history, with interesting architecture and plenty of things to do’.

The Extreme Sailing Series is a world-class sailing competition that gathers some of the world’s best sailors and has them compete

against each other in identical GC32s catamarans. This year, for the first time, there will also be a fleet of hydrofoiling Flying Phantoms. Each edition lasts ten months and travels three continents, comprising a total of eight acts.

The event’s 11th edition started on March 8th in Muscat (Oman) and stopped at Quingdao (China) before arriving in Madeira. After the act set in the waters of the Portuguese archipelago, the competition will travel through three more European cities with Hamburg (Germany) and Cardiff (United Kingdom) confirmed as of the writing of this article. This year’s edition is set to finish in the American continent with an act in San Diego (United States of America) and another one in Los Cabos (Mexico).쐽 www.essential-madeira.com 12

São 22 embarcações, incluindo uma equipa portuguesa, cada uma com dois atletas, que irão competir no Funchal.

O site oficial do evento sugere a Marina do Funchal, local onde ficará a vila da corrida e o local de apoio aos atletas, como um dos melhores sítios para assistir à terceira etapa da competição. A organização descreve ainda o Funchal como uma cidade a “explodir de cultura e história, com uma arquitetura interessante e com muitas coisas para fazer”.

A Extreme Sailing Series é uma prova mundial de vela que reúne alguns dos melhores navegadores do mundo, que competem entre si em idênticos catamarans GC32s. Como novidade, este ano participa ainda uma frota de hidrofoiling Flying Phantoms. Cada edição dura dez meses e passa por três continentes, sendo dividida em oito etapas.

A 11.ª edição do evento começou no dia 8 de março em Muscat (Omã) e, antes de chegar à Madeira, passou ainda por Quingdao (China).

W

here sea meets mountain the views ‘take away your breath’ and the setting is idyllic. This is the core of the new Madeira Ocean Trails brand and one of the main traits that make Madeira an ideal destination for this sport. This is what André Gouveia, who is in charge of the project, says.

It is the Madeira Promotion Bureau who is in charge of the new concept of communication the goal of which is to divulge Madeira as a destination with intrinsic qualities perfect for trails. This comes at a time when Active Tourism is more and more relevant in the wider international scene.

‘Communicating Madeira as a rejuvenated destination, directed towards active tourism and capable of attracting tourist fluxes in any time of the year’ is another of the defined goals, says André Gouveia.

m cenário idílico, onde o oceano acompanha a montanha com “vistas de cortar a respiração”. Esta é a base do conceito da nova marca ‘Madeira Ocean Trails’ e uma das principais características que tornam a Madeira um destino de eleição para a prática. Quem diz é André Gouveia, responsável pelo projeto.

A cargo do novo conceito de comunicação está a Associação de Promoção da Madeira, que pretende dar a conhecer Madeira como um destino com qualidades intrínsecas na área dos trails, numa altura em que o Turismo Ativo tem vindo a ter cada vez mais relevância internacionalmente.

“Comunicar a Madeira como um destino rejuvenescido, direcionado para o turismo ativo e capaz de atrair fluxos turísticos em qualquer altura do ano”, é outro dos objetivos definidos, refere André Gouveia.

O Madeira Island Ultra Trail, a maior prova de Trail Running em Portugal, é uma das parcerias da marca e Luís Fernandes, primeiro madeirense a vencer a prova, em 2015, é o conselheiro técnico oficial.

the first Madeiran to win it, back in 2015, is the official counsellor.

In its first year, Madeira Ocean Trails’ promotion activities will centre on the brand itself and the three major events it integrates: the Madeira Island Ultra Trail (MIUT), the Ultra Skymarathon (USM) and the ECO Trail. All three take place in Madeira and are internationally recognized competitions.

Trail competitions in Madeira are sought all around the world. To take the Ultra Sky Marathon as an example, João Nunes, one of the organisers, counts participants belonging to 13 different countries.

And the sport has a visible impact in the region’s tourism and on the promotion of its natural heritage. Regarding this topic, Patrício Fernandes, one of the ECO Trail’s organisers, notes the strong presence of athletes in social media which serves to help promote Madeira.

Humberto Freitas, one of the organisers of MIUT, maintains that it is the sheer

diversity of trails, from the faster to the more technical ones, which makes Madeira island an adequate destination for practising the sport: ‘The famous steps and severely steep, seemingly endless, paths going both up and down’. The main draw is the exuberance of the trails themselves which ‘start in the sea and end high atop the mountains’.

e nos três maiores eventos que nela se encontram inseridos: Madeira Island Ultra-Trail (MIUT), Ultra Skymarathon (USM) e ECO Trail. Três provas que acontecem na Madeira e que são reconhecidas a nível internacional.

As provas de trail da Madeira são atualmente procuradas por atletas de todo o mundo. No caso do Ultra Skymarathon, João Nunes, da organização,contabiliza 13 nacionalidades diferentes.

O impacto da modalidade na região é notório a nível turístico e na divulgação do património natural madeirense. Neste aspeto Patrício Fernandes, organizador da ECO Trail, refere ainda a forte presença dos atletas nas redes sociais, que impulsiona a divulgação da Madeira.

Para Humberto Freitas, organizador do MIUT, o que torna a ilha da Madeira um destino à altura de receber provas com tanto destaque é a diversidade de trilhos, dos mais rápidos aos mais técnicos: “As famosas escadarias, subidas intermináveis e descidas muito ingremes”. Como fator principal estão a exuberância e tributos dos trilhos que “começam no mar e acabam nas mais altas montanhas”.

ack when going to the beach was seen as something eccentric and practised by very few, Barreirinha was already setting the standards. This little beach, to the east of the bay of Funchal and near the São Tiago Fortress was made more accessible by the City Hall of Funchal in 1939. These were the first steps towards the construction of a pool complex which has just undergone some renovations.

The renovation works carried out over the last few months served to improve the solarium level and the means of accessing the sea as well as to create a blue centre, meant for environmental education, and to prepare for the next bathing season with a new lift. Thanks to these works, the complex now sports new bathing facilities.

uando ir a banhos era ainda uma ideia excêntrica, criticada por muitos e praticada por poucos, a Barreirinha já era um ponto de referência. A pequena praia, na zona leste da baia do Funchal, perto da Fortaleza de Santiago, viu o seu acesso facilitado pela Câmara do Funchal, em 1939, abrindo caminho para um complexo balnear que acaba de sofrer melhoramentos.

As obras levadas a cabo nos últimos meses serviram para melhorar o piso do solário e as acessibilidades ao mar, criar um centro azul, destinado à educação ambiental, e preparar a nova época balnear com um novo elevador. Com estes trabalhos o complexo fica, também, agora dotado de novas instalações balneárias. Ainda este ano, a Barreirinha conta com outra novidade: o galardão “Praia Acessível – Praia para todos!”, um programa que certifica o complexo na vertente das condições de acessibilidade e serviços.

The rocky beach is one of Funchal’s icons, be it for the tourists roaming the oldtown, be it for residents who ‘seek tranquillity for a quieter evening’ says Carlos Jardim, manager of Frente Mar Funchal, the firm in charge of doing the administration work for the space.

Officially inaugurated in 1940, the slope on which the complex stands is dyed blue ‘as though it were an extension of the sea’. Throughout the years, the complex has evolved to become one of the city’s true hubs.

The complex’s solarium area is quite wide and its means of accessing the sea

many, one of them being noticeably different from the others. It is a small area where the ground is composed of pebble stones, which imbues the space with ‘a very special character’.

But there is, and has always been, much more than beach to Barreirinha.

‘Many years ago it was associated with typical Madeiran folk festivals’ and was sought ‘for popular celebrations due to its location by the sea’ tells Carlos Jardim.

Nowadays, sports and culture are also a part of the complex.

Where sports is are concerned, swimming, canoeing and boat racing competitions are but a few examples of what is done in these waters. On the cultural side, quite a few institutions have chosen Barrerinha to be the stage of their events, such as the Aleste Music Festival, held the past May. www.essential-madeira.com 17

A praia rochosa é um dos ícones da cidade do Funchal, tanto para os turistas que deambulam pela zona velha, como para os residentes que “procuram a tranquilidade para um serão mais pacato”, revela Carlos Jardim, responsável da Frente Mar Funchal, empresa que faz a gestão do espaço.

Inaugurada oficialmente no ano de 1940, a encosta na qual fica situada o complexo encontra-se pintada de azul, “como se de um prolongamento do mar se tratasse”. Ao longo dos anos, o complexo evolui como um verdadeiro ponto comum da cidade, com os domingos a serem sinónimo de “formigueiro humano”.

Com uma ampla área de solário, a Barreirinha tem diversos acessos ao mar, mas um é especial. Trata-se de uma pequena zona de calhau rolado que confere ao espaço “um carácter muito especial”.

The proximity to the sea draws in people for these kinds of events ‘enlivened by good music and with the smell of the sea in the atmosphere’, always with the goal of offering ‘excellent moments of fun and leisure’ to all those who visit the space, says Carlos Jardim.

Each complex run by Frente Mar Funchal has its own set of attributes and Barreirinha is no different. Its location makes it a special place, since it is one of the few points of access to the sea in the east of the city. The only other one is the neighbouring beach of São Tiago.

The walk to its main entrance is done through the oldest street in the city, Rua de Santa Maria, where colourful doors on nearly every wall offer a preview of another day at the beach. Before going down to the beach one can relish a view of the complex from the viewpoint in front of the local church. And once inside, one need but enjoy the movement of ships as they come and go from the Harbour of Funchal. 쐽

Mas não só de praia viveu, e vive, a Barreirinha. “Há muitos anos era associada aos arraiais típicos madeirenses”, sendo procurada “para festas populares pela sua localização à beira-mar”, conta Carlos Jardim. Hoje em dia, o desporto e a cultura fazem também parte do complexo.

No primeiro, provas de natação, canoagem e regatas são alguns dos exemplos do que é praticado nas suas águas. Já do ponto de vista cultural, são já algumas as organizações que escolhem o palco da Barreirinha para os seus eventos, como é o caso do Festival Aleste, que decorreu no passado mês de maio.

A razão desta filiação é simples. A proximidade ao mar aparece como o principal fator para a escolha do complexo para este tipo de eventos, “animados ao som de boa música e com a maresia como aroma envolvente”, sempre com o objetivo de proporcionar “excelentes momentos de lazer e diversão” a todos os que visitam o espaço, afirma Carlos Jardim.

Cada complexo gerido pela Frente Mar Funchal distingue-se pelas suas particularidades e o da Barreirinha não é diferente. A localização faz com que seja um sítio especial, já que é um dos poucos acessos ao mar na zona leste da cidade. O outro é a vizinha Praia de São Tiago.

O caminho até à entrada principal faz-se pela mais antiga rua da cidade, a de Santa Maria, com as portas coloridas, de um lado e de outro da estrada, a anteciparem mais um dia de praia.

Antes de descer para a praia é possível desfrutar da vista sobre o complexo através do miradouro do socorro. Uma vez no complexo, pode aproveitar para apreciar o movimento de entrada e saída de embarcações no Porto do Funchal. 쐽

he Funchal Jazz Festival is set to return to Parque de Santa Catarina between July 13th and 15th for another edition which, in the words of artistic director Paulo Barbosa, ‘intends to illustrate the best of modern jazz’.

Last year, about 6,500 people visited Parque de Santa Catarina during the event’s three days. The artistic director argues that the goal for this year’s edition is to at least meet those figures. Paulo Barbosa is under the belief that ‘people will not want to miss out on the opportunity to see several of the most resonant names in the musical landscape of our days play live’.

When it comes to the event’s programme, he opts to highlight it as a

No ano transato o Parque de Santa Catarina recebeu cerca de 6.500 espectadores durante os três dias do evento. A expetativa deste ano é, pelo menos, de manter os mesmos números, revela o diretor artístico. A esperança de Paulo Barbosa assenta na crença de que “as pessoas não vão querer perder a oportunidade de ver ao vivo vários dos mais conceituados músicos da atualidade”.

Do programa, prefere destacar o seu todo em vez de individualizar. A razão é simples.“Uma das apostas mais fortes desta organização é a de tentar apresentar sempre uma programação globalmente válida e recheada de diferentes tipos de valores, não havendo este ano um único nome no cartaz que não diga nada a quem quer que seja que se interesse minimamente por jazz”, explica.

‘One of the organisation’s most significant commitments has to do with offering a globally varied programme built on different values so that no name in this year’s edition will not go unnoticed to anyone who knows anything about jazz’, he explains.

This year’s edition will see young talents join instruments with well-established musicians who have made their own names playing the genre born in late 19th century New Orleans. The festival’s first evening, on Thursday, is good example. If on the one hand we have young João Barradas performing with his band (João Barradas Directions) and sax player Greg Osby, on the other we have Joe Lovano’s (sax tenor) Saxophone Summit, with David Liebman (sax soprano), Phil Markowitz (piano), Canil McBee (bassist), Billy Hart (drummer) and Greg Osby himself (high sax)who has a long track in the industry.

More experienced musicians also include Charles Lloyd, who will be performing on July 15th with his quartet. ‘Even at the height of his 79 years of age, he pulled off the titles of Tenor Saxophonist of the Year and Midsize

Ensemble of the Year in a single day, both awarded by the Jazz Journalist Association’ says Paulo Barbosa as he shows how there is no right age for being a genius.

Opening the first concert on July 15th is the Trio composed of Bill Frisel (guitar), Tony Scherr (electric bass) and Kenny Wollesen (drums).

On the day before that, there are two other concerts. The first by the Rudy Royston OriOn triO which will bring together sax tenor and soprano Jon Irabagon, bassist Yasushi Nakamura and drummer Rudy Royston who took third place in the 2013 ‘critic’s Rising Star Drums poll by DownBeat magazine’.

After that it will be Kurt Rosenwinkel Caipi Band’s turn to take the stage at Parque de Santa Catarina. He is one of ‘the most influential guitarists of the last two decades’.

Every night, the first concert is to start at 9: 30 p.m. and the second one around 11 p.m.

This year’s edition of the Jazz Festival leaves its mark of innovation by adding a pedagogic component to the already memorable roll of artists. There is to be a workshop run by a group of American musicians and two lectures: one delivered by music critic Leonel Santos on the essence and internal conflicts of jazz and another one by Madeiran researcher Vitor Sardinha on this musical genre’s history in Madeira.

As per usual, right after the concerts in Parque de Santa Catarina, the night jazzes on in Scat with the Jam Sessions, with the Alexandre Coelho Quartet. Recently, the group comprising João Mortágua (high sax & soprano), Gonçalo Moreira (piano), João Cação (bass) and Alexandre Coelho (drums) has ‘taken to the national jazz scene’.

Scat is also the stage for the Festival’s presentation show on July 8th with the Madeira Jazz Collective & Vânia Fernandes, ‘the Madeiran singer to have won more awards’.

Between July 10th and 14th, early in the evening, Avenida Arriaga is also a jazz stage, with five combos and the Conservatory of Madeira’s very own jazz orchestra offering visitors their own take on the genre. 쐽

T

he 2017 edition of the L Concerts is to open on July 1st at 9: 45 p.m. to the sound of Ceuzany’s voice.

The artist was crowned Cape-Verde’s best voice in the 2017 Cape-Verde Music Awards (CVMA) and winner of the prize for best Traditional Music, and this will be her debut in Madeira, on the stage at Estalagem da Ponta do Sol. She sings in Cape-Verdean creole, in a tender and sensual voice which she will use to treat her audience to some of her best known songs such as ‘Fera Na Sukupira’ and ‘Cabo Verde lá fora’.

This year’s edition is to run between July 1st and October 1st. There will be a total of 14 concerts in Estalagem da Ponta do Sol ranging from experimental Jazz to the Cape-Verdean song book, Rock, Punk and Classic Contemporary.

Morocco, Cape Verde, England, Brazil and the United States are some of the countries to be represented at the 2017 L Concerts.

As has come to be usual in these concerts, and in the spirit of preserving to place’s intimate soul, those interested in attending must submit their names to the event’s guest list to confirm their participation.

hen Queen Sylvia of Sweden arrived in Madeira on May for the inauguration of the new building of the Princesa D. Maria Amélia Hospice, she renewed a hundred year-old vow, as old as the institution supported by the Swedish royal family.

The links to the other side of the Atlantic trace their origin back to Rio de Janeiro as Amélia of Leuchtenberg made her arrival to Brazil in 1829.

At the mere age of 17, D. Amélia married Pedro I of Brazil and became empress consort. Maria Amélia de Bragança,

already frail as a child, was born of this marriage in1831, already on European soil.

Having lost her father at the age of three, Maria Amélia was raised in Portugal, where her half-sister, Maria II of Portugal, was queen, and she lived in Lisbon until 1852, when the first symptoms of tuberculosis started to show.

Since the 18th century, the airs of Madeira have come to be identified by English physicians as having special properties that enabled the cure of tuberculosis.

uando a rainha Sílvia da Suécia chegou à Madeira, no passado dia 2 de maio, para a inauguração de um novo edifício no Hospício Princesa D. Maria Amélia, com ela trouxe um compromisso com mais de cem anos de história, o mesmo período que a família real sueca apoia aquela instituição.

A razão dessa ligação começa do outro lado do atlântico, precisamente no Rio de Janeiro, com a chegada de Amélia de Leuchtenberg ao Brasil, em 1829.

Com apenas 17 anos, D. Amélia casou-se com D. Pedro I do Brasil e tornou-se imperatriz.

Da relação com o monarca nasceu, já em

claims that the best climate in the world in which to cure tuberculosis was Madeira’s’, says architect Rui Campos Matos. That will have been the trigger for why European aristocracy sought the island’s climate.

In truth, many years later it was verified that the ‘island’s airs’ and conditions actually did not favour patients with pulmonary conditions, very much because of the existing humidity.

But back then, it was in the hope of recovering from her already advanced disease that the young Maria Amélia came to

melhor clima do mundo para curar a tuberculose é a Madeira”, afirma o arquiteto Rui Campos Matos.Terá sido a partir daí que começou a verdadeira procura da ilha pela aristocracia europeia.

A verdade é que, muitos anos depois, verificouse que os “ares da ilha” e as suas condições não eram favoráveis a doentes com problemas pulmonares, muito por causa da humidade existente.

Mas naquela altura, é na esperança de uma recuperação que, já em estado avançado de doença, a jovem Maria Amélia chega à Madeira, a 28 de agosto de 1852, na companhia da sua mãe. Viria a falecer pouco depois, a 4 de fevereiro de 1953.

Madeira on the 28th of August, 1852, accompanied by her mother. Not long after, she would pass away on February 4th 1953.

Romance intertwined with grief is quite the common theme in our history.

Ovide’s Pyramus and Thisbe and Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet being two prime examples of how tragedy and love can blend to create something new.

Even though this was a different kind of love, that of a mother for her daughter, the story behind Madeira’s Hospice blends two different ingredients which recur in film and literature.

After her daughter’s tragic death, Amélie wanted to pay tribute to the island for the way they had cared for her. And so she had a sanatorium for the care and cure of those who suffered from tuberculosis built in the memory of her daughter.

After acquiring the lands, located in what is today’s Avenida do Infante, the foundation stone was laid in 1856. Six years later, the D. Maria Amélia Hospice greeted its first patients.

Having lived in Lisbon since her daughter’s death, Amélie passes away in 1873, never having visited the hospice she had founded and leaving no solid financial groundwork on which to carry on the project. By last will and testament, that task had been left to her sister Josefina,

Queen of Sweden. Years later, the task fell on the shoulders of the heir, King Oscar.

It was through him that, after a visit to the island and the hospice, the grounds for the project were laid in the form of a perpetual foundation.

É comum na nossa história o romantismo e o luto andarem de mãos dadas. Os casos de “Píramo e Tisbe”, de Ovídio, e de “Romeu e Julieta”, de Shakespeare, são exemplo onde a tragédia e o amor se misturam e criam algo de novo.

Apesar de ser um diferente tipo de amor, neste caso o maternal, a história do Hospício na Madeira também junta os dois ingredientes, que são temas correntes na literatura e no cinema.

Após a tragédia da morte da sua filha, D. Amélia quis homenagear a ilha pela forma como tinha sido recebida. Em memória de Maria Amélia, mandou construir um sanatório para a cura de doentes com tuberculose.

Após a aquisição do terreno, situado na hoje conhecida por Avenida D. Infante, a primeira pedra foi lançada em 1856. Seis anos mais tarde, o Hospício D. Maria Amélia acolhia os seus primeiros doentes.

Em Lisboa desde a morte da filha, D. Amélia morre em 1873 sem nunca ter visitado o hospício que tinha fundado e sem deixar bases financeiras sólidas que pudessem manter o projeto. Por testamento, essa tarefa foi incumbida à sua irmã Josefina, rainha da Suécia.

Anos mais tarde, a responsabilidade passou para o herdeiro do trono sueco, o rei Óscar.

Foi através dele, após uma visita à ilha e ao hospício, que as bases de apoio ao projeto, através de uma fundação perpétua, foram lançadas.

The stairway through which the main entrance can be accessed and the pediment are impressive, the façade surrounding them being of near symmetrical composition. The enclosing gardens are open to the public and arriving there is an experience akin to time travel.

Nowadays, despite it not working as a hospital for the treatment of pulmonary diseases anymore, the building has been reinvented as an orphanage, a school and a home for the elderly. It remains an important element in the island’s societal makeup.

During the inauguration ceremony last May the Queen mentioned how it is with ‘pride’ that the royal family ‘will continue to support this institution’ as per their hundred year-old promise. The new space, annexed to the home and the main building, now has the capacity to house 40 residents, divided in 16 individual rooms and 12 double rooms, and is meant to house the elderly. 쐽

O primeiro sanatório português apoiado pela Casa-real Sueca é um edifício neoclássico de estilo inglês, com inspiração nas casas de estilo georgiano dos finais do século XVIII, inícios dos séculos XIX. A escadaria que dá acesso à entrada principal e o frontão impressionam, ladeados por uma fachada quase simétrica. A chegada ao edifício é feita como uma viagem no tempo, através dos jardins circundantes, que se encontram abertos ao público em geral.

Hoje em dia, apesar de já não funcionar como asilo hospitalar para tratamento de doenças pulmonares, o edifício tem agora um orfanato, uma escola e um lar de idosos, continuando, assim, a dar um importante apoio na vertente social da ilha.

Durante a cerimónia de inauguração, no passado mês de maio, a rainha que referiu com é “orgulho” que a família real “continuará a apoiar esta instituição”, num compromisso já centenário. O novo espaço, anexo ao lar e ao edifício principal, tem agora uma capacidade total para 40 residentes, divididos em 16 quartos individuais e 12 duplos, e destina-se a apoiar os mais idosos. 쐽 www.essential-madeira.com 29

t should come as little to no surprise that the patron saint of fishermen, St Peter, or São Pedro, as he is known to locals, should also be the patron saint of Câmara de Lobos, a town deeply rooted in fishing. Every year the town holds popular festivities to honour their patron and this year celebrations are to take place between June 27th and July 1st.

Deeply rooted in the town’s tradition, these celebrations can be traced back to the 17th century when a brotherhood devoted to the patron of sailors, the Blessed Peter González based at the Church of Our Lady of the Conception. Ever since those early days the men of the sea took upon themselves to hold these celebrations by putting up stalls with plenty to eat and www.essential-madeira.com 30

drink and throwing and organizing a procession in their patron’s honour.

Back to the present, and since 2014, the Town Hall of Câmara de Lobos has come to modernise these celebrations adding a strong popular component to the religious one.

The stalls stand sturdy and the partying goes on, with all the makings of a popular celebration on the island as well as entertainment ranging from university student bands, DJs, and artists, from Madeira and beyond, such as Portuguese singer Aurea, who will be performing on the eve of June 30th. The streets are now adorned with motifs that break convention which serves to bring the whole celebration more into the present.

On the 28th, though, the streets will be flooded for the popular parades, involving

hundreds of people. And the opening will re-enact the original procession in honour of St Peter González Telmo.

These celebrations are but one of the most visible aspects of the ongoing process to renew the historic centre of Câmara de Lobos. All efforts are being made to renew the city without losing sight of the sea.

One of the icons of this renovation is the construction of a hotel belonging to the Pestana group in the place where there used to be the old fishmonger’s and the old town hall. A small hotel, it will sport 51 bedrooms with a view of the bay and a small museum area dedicated to Winston Churchill, the British statesman who not only gave the hotel its name, he also painted the bay back in January 1950. 쐽 www.essential-madeira.com 31

Desde esses primeiros tempos os festejos eram organizadas pelos homens do mar, que montavam barraquinhas de comidas e bebidas e organizavam uma procissão em honra do padroeiro.

Na atualidade e reconhecendo a importância da tradição, a Câmara Municipal de Câmara de Lobos tem vindo, desde 2014, a modernizar as celebrações, associando a tradição religiosa a um forte envolvimento popular.

As barraquinhas permanecem e a festa continua a ter todos os ingredientes de um arraial popular, mas o programa de animação envolve tunas académicas, DJ’s, artistas madeirenses e alguns de projeção internacional, como a portuguesa Aurea, que atua na noite de 30 de junho. Na decoração as ruas passaram a ostentar motivos que rompem com a tradição da decoração dos arraiais, uma forma de fazer a transição para um tempo contemporâneo.

No dia 28, contudo, as ruas pertencem às marchas populares, com centenas de figurantes.

A abertura é feita com a reconstituição histórica do cortejo de São Pedro Gonçalves Telmo.

As festas de São Pedro são apenas um aspeto visível da transformação em curso no centro histórico de Câmara de Lobos. A aposta vai para a reabilitação urbana, sem romper com a ligação ao mar.

Um dos pratos fortes dessa renovação é a construção de um hotel do grupo Pestana, no local onde funcionou a antiga lota e a antiga câmara municipal. Será uma pequena unidade de 51 quartos, com vista para a baía e um pequeno núcleo museológico dedicado a Winston Churchill, estadista britânico, que para além de dar nome ao hotel, pintou a baía em janeiro de 1950. www.cm-camaradelobos.pt 쐽

MSC Cruises returns to Madeira October 2018 marks the return of the Western Mediterranean to the MSC Orchestra’s route. MSC Cruises is the only cruise line enabling visitors to both board ad disembark in Funchal allowing for travels to Morocco, the Canary Islands, Spain, France and Italy aboard the MSC Orchestra.

One can book two 13 day long cruises in Madeira heaed towards Malaga, Civitavecchia, Genoa, Marseille, Barcelona, Casablanca and Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The travel between Barcelona and Madeira comprises a 6 day long itinerary. The last cruise, which lasts 12 days, stops at Malaga, Civitavecchia (Rome), Genoa, Marseille, Barcelona, Valencia, Cadiz and Lisbon. These cruises allow for the possibility to board in Funchal on vessels belonging to MSC. Em outubro de 2018 o MSC Orchestra retorna à sua rota pelo Mediterrâneo Ocidental. Flights from Madeira to Stansted

Jet2.com has now added Madeira to Stansted Airport, London, where they are now based. These flights are maintained throughout the whole year and offer more than 38 thousand seats in two weekly flights.

Stansted has become Jet2.com’s sixth airport to have flights connecting to Madeira throughout the year. Starting on October, the British airline is adding two new routes to Madeira, one departing from Edinburgh and another from Birmingham. Both these routes start operating on October 30th. There is to be two weekly flights to Edinburgh and only one to Birmingham. After Gatwick and Luton, Stansted is the third London airport to sport connections with the Cristiano Ronaldo International Airport.

hen the first Lexus LS landed on the market in 1989, few believed that Toyota could launch a premium brand able to rival the Germans league of BMW, Mercedes and Audi in terms of quality and prestige.

As it turns out, the few that envisioned a bright future for Lexus were right, because 30 years later, the Japanese brand is perfectly established in the industry and is indeed a respected rival of the German emblems.

With the Toyota mothership the pioneer in the hybrid revolution with the Prius, Lexus positioned itself as the

premium brand with the greatest environmental concerns and invested in that same hybrid solution for its cars, gaining ground on its competition that insists on developing diesel. The current Lexus range is broad and markedly different from the rest, that being its biggest triumph. Essential tested the new IS300h, the only version available on the Portuguese market.

The transition between the two is practically imperceptible; proof that it even exists lies in the low consumption recorded. The car has a horsepower of 181, which enables respectable performances, and the IS300h is even fun to drive when the challenges placed by the road become more significant. Even so, this is a car made to cruise along a winding road rather than attack it.

Resistance The second phase of the Resistance project, associated to the experimental research programme Primeira Pedra, will be presented at the Vitra Campus, in Weil am Rhein, Germany, as part of Art Basel 2017 taking place in June.

After a first phase, which centred on the physical and mechanical features of Portuguese stone and based on the use of marble and limestone and the ideas of five international architects, the second phase of the project has now been revealed. Another group of architects has joined the first, working on new projects and using other types of Portuguese stone. Curated by Guta Moura Guedes, the initiative includes the work of important names in international architecture, such as Amanda Levete, Álvaro Siza, Bijoy Jai, Eduardo Souto Moura, Carrilho da Graça and Junya Ishigami.

A segunda fase do projeto Resistance, associado ao programa de pesquisa experimental Primeira Pedra, vai ser apresentado no Vitra Campus, em Weil am Rhein, Alemanha, no âmbito da Art Basel 2017, a decorrer em junho. Após uma primeira fase, que se centrou nas características fisico-mecânicas da pedra portuguesa, tendo como base a utilização de mármores e calcários e a partir das ideias de cinco arquitetos internacionais, é divulgada agora a segunda fase do projeto. Portuguese Story The Portuguese jewellery brand Monseo Jewels was recognised at the A’Design Award and Competition, the biggest design contest in the world, with the Golden A’Design Award in the Jewelry, Eyewear and Watch Design category.

The winning collection was Portuguese Story, conceived by the designer Diana Vieira da Silva.

“The intention was to create a collection that could link jewellery, architecture and Portuguese cultural heritage. The inspiration comes from the dome of the Santa Maria de Belém Church, part of the Jerónimos Monastery in Lisbon. For its materialisation we explored the latest technologies, such as 3D printing in wax, along with traditional jewellery techniques,” said the designer.

Home by Hermès Hermès has presented its new collection for the home, where the highlight is the special-edition furniture designed by the Portuguese artist Álvaro Siza-Vieira. Karumi is the name of this collection that comprises three bamboo seats, which also feature carbon fibre, thus combining manufacturing excellence and technology. Also worthy of note is the Le Lean (The Link) collection conceived by Studio Hermès in collaboration with Guillaume Delvigne and Damian O’Sullivan, in which leather plays the starring role. Equally special are the collections born from the partnerships with the Korean artist Seulgi Lee, presented in rugs and blankets, and the English duo Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby, translated into a copper coffee table.

Conceived to make and serve coffee, this collection comprises a cafetiere, espresso cups and scoop, among other objects, and was produced from high-shine stainless steel. reated in 1932, the first Calatrava watch from Patek Philippe drew inspiration from the German Bauhaus school. The avant-garde philosophy adopted by the Swiss manufacturer for the conception of the first reference (Ref. 96) of this iconic model was expressed through its elegant, minimalist lines. Measuring just 31mm in diameter and with a slim 9mm case, the Calatrava became a timeless watch and the most collectable in the world, the maximum expression of the true style of the brand.

Eighty-five years since the creation of the first reference, countless versions have been launched of this famous model.

Regardless of the diversity of materials and the complications associated to them, the general design of the structure has remained faithful to its origins. The latest version presented at Baselword 2017 is proof of that.

Patek Philippe Calatrava Ref. 6006G, with a self-winding mechanical movement, presents an analogue date and a seconds subdial between 4 and 5 o’clock, qualities that pay tribute to the 40th anniversary of the calibre 240, the movement used in this model. The 18K white gold case with a 39mm diameter, 2mm larger than the first model of the same series (Ref. 6000) launched in 2005, presents two tones in the different circles, ebony black and silver.

The dial is black with silver and ebony black hands and white-printed Arabic numerals, while the case back is made of sapphire crystal. The strap, in hand-stitched alligator leather, is shiny black with a fold-over clasp. With the date hand that points at the date numeral, this model is water resistant to 30 metres and has a power reserve of 48 hours. Elegance, simplicity and a slightly military look are the main features of this model that does justice to the brand’s motto: “You never actually own a Patek Philippe. The Festivities of Calheta

I

nternationally acclaimed Portuguese artist Rui Veloso is the big name for the festivities of Calheta, to be held on June 24th, the day marking the town’s 515th birthday which makes it one of the oldest municipalities in Madeira Island.

The singer known especially well among Portuguese-speaking audiences for several of his song will bring entertainment to the beach area, the main stage for the festivities which will include the 16th edition of the Talentos à Solta Festival at 7:30 p.m. which will have pupils from elementary schools and high schools in the region compete in a talent show. There will also be fireworks and DJs bringing more sounds and lights to the night.

Popular parades will take to the streets at 9 p.m. and form another of the highlights of the night. These are held in honour of St John, or São João as he is known to locals, and will have people from the municipality’s eight parishes parading down Avenida D. Manuel I in the town of Calheta. 쐽

The Madeira Sports Club is once again holding the Rali Vinho Madeira race. A traditional and historic event, this race attracts countless petrol heads to Madeira and is the island’s main automobile racing event.

This is Machico’s 32nd Gastronomic Week. Every year the event held by the Town Hall is structured around different concepts. The goal is to promote regional gastronomy, with special emphasis on the town of Machico’s own delicacies. The Festa de São João is one of the island’s traditional festivities.

Throughout four days, between June 21st and 25th, hundreds of people gather in Porto Santo for a wide array of celebrations. One of the key moments is the popular parades that march down the golden isle’s streets in honour of St John, or São João, as he is known to locals.

O concelho da Ponta do Sol volta a comemorar as Noites de Verão, em que de junho a agosto, todas as sextas-feiras, há uma atuação, pelas 22:00 horas.

History & Experience The Madeira Film Experience covers the history of the Island in a thirty minute film O Madeira Film Experience dá a conhecer a história da ilha através de um filme de trinta minutos

ho were the first people to know of Madeira? Which European emperor died on the island? Which Prime Minister was at Madeira Island, for vacation, after the II world war?

These are some of the questions answered in a film exhibited by the Madeira Film Experience covering six hundred years of history in thirty minutes.

The discovery of the island, the Portuguese settlers, sugar production, the importance of the Portuguese Discoveries, the revolutions, the famine and struggle against isolation are some of the topics explained during the film which can be viewed in the former cinema at the Marina Shopping Centre.

The video is available in Portuguese, English, French, German and Dutch in a room equipped with a simultaneous translation system which allows for several people of different nationalities to watch the film together.

The cinema opens at 10.00 a.m. and the opening session starts at 10.15 a.m. A total of ten sessions are scheduled throughout the day with a forty-five minute interval in between sessions. The closing session takes place at 5.00 p.m.

On June 23rd 2016 we watched, disbelievingly, as the citizens of the United Kingdom voted to leave the European Union No dia 23 de junho de 2016, assistimos incrédulos à decisão de saída do Reino Unido da União Europeia pela maioria dos cidadãos britânicos

or the first time in history, an EU Member-State is to exit the Union as per the dictums of Article 50 of the European Union Treaty.

The possibility for a State to unilaterally and voluntarily leave the European Union has been expressly addressed since 2009, when the Lisbon Treaty came into effect.

According to the previously mentioned article 50 a sovereign State may notify the EU of its intention to abandon the institution and will then be under the obligation to negotiate the terms for its exit.

There must be an agreement as to how the exit is to be carried out attending to the relationship between the Union and the State in question. The member of the European Council representing the exiting party will not partake in any of the Council’s discussions concerning the exit process.

Talks will address fundamental topics such as access to the single market, the creation of new trade deals and the conditions to be adopted regarding people’s freedom of movement.

For instance, it will be necessary to define the kind of visa demandable for an EU citizen residing or working in the UK, as well as for someone in the opposite situation.

Unless the European Council deems it unanimously adequate to extend it, the time period forecast for these negotiations with the Member-State is expected to last for two ears.

The deal is to be negotiated and signed by the Council representing the European Union after a proper majority and due endorsement by the European Parliament.

This is the wider picture of the legal framework under which this divorce between the United Kingdom and the European Union is to take place and now we need only wait and see how it unfolds. 쐽

As conversações deverão abordar temas fundamentais como o acesso ao mercado único, a criação de novos acordos comerciais e as condições a adotar quanto à liberdade de circulação das pessoas.

Será, por exemplo, necessário definir que tipo de visto será exigível para que um cidadão da UE resida ou trabalhe no Reino Unido e para a situação inversa.

O prazo previsto para a negociação de saída é de dois anos, a menos que o Conselho Europeu decida por unanimidade prorrogar esse período, com o acordo do Estado-membro em causa.

O acordo deverá ser negociado e celebrado pelo Conselho em representação da União Europeia, através de maioria qualificada e após a devida aprovação do Parlamento Europeu.

one are the times when wine reigned supreme in a gastronomic dinner. Now beer claims a spot of its own. But, naturally, this is no regular beer. It is usually craft beer, with a strong identity, capable of challenging the senses.

Pairing beer with food is no easy challenge for as much aroma as it may have, it remains a beverage with a certain

degree of bitterness. Adding it to a gastronomic menu can be a great challenge, as well as a great surprise. Taking this challenge on board was the Uva Restaurant & Wine Bar as they combined craft beer with a five course menu for their ‘Unexpected guests’ dinner.

A cerveja não é fácil de harmonizar com comida. Por mais aromática que seja é uma

craft beer producer. Diogo Abreu created the Vilhoa brand to distribute them in Madeira. ‘Irreverence’, he confesses, was one of the goals of this dinner service since it took place at The Vine, a hotel themed entirely around wine.

Flavours come by surprise, as did the dinner’s theme of having an actor roleplay the characters that gave their names to some of the beers being served: Florinda, Joe da Silva, Urraca Vendaval, Zé Arnaldo and Iolanda.

The only beer not named after a character was Agasalho, the Portuguese word for a warm piece of clothing, which got its name from a solidarity campaign. It is a beer that ‘covers the palate with its chocolaty tones that come from the dark malts and cocoa seeds used in its fermentation’ explains

Diogo Abreu. Agasalho was served with dessert, a 70% chocolate soufflé, coffee chips and a raspberry sorbet.

One of the founders of 8ª colina, Pedro Romão, defined the firm’s objective as ending the ‘dictatorship’ of industrial beers and their flavours. Self-taught, he holds that ‘beer has always been mistreated’. This small firm produces about 10 thousand litres a month for each of their brands.

The word ‘craft’ is a perfect fit for their profile. The difference lies in production methods as well as the quality of ingredients such as hops, or malt, used by brewer Fernando Gonçalves in the production of beers with a strong sense of personality despite not being pasteurized or filtered.

As cervejas vieram de Lisboa, produzidas pela 8.ª colina, uma empresa que se dedica a cervejas artesanais. Diogo Abreu criou a marca Vilhoa para as distribuir na Madeira. Assume que um dos objetivos destes jantares é “serem irreverentes”, neste caso porque aconteceu num hotel, o The Vine, muito associado ao tema do vinho.

Os sabores são inesperados, assim como o tema do jantar remete para a encarnação, por um ator, dos personagens que dão nome a algumas das cervejas servidas: Florinda, Joe da Silva, Urraca Vendaval, Zé Arnaldo e Iolanda.

Fora desta regra de nomenclatura fica apenas a Agasalho, cujo nome nasceu de uma campanha de solidariedade e representa uma cerveja “que cobre o palato com os seus tons achocolatados provenientes dos maltes escuros e das sementes de cacau introduzidas na fermentação”, explica Diogo Abreu. A Agasalho foi servida com a sobremesa, um Soufflé de chocolate a 70%, raspas de café e sorvete de framboesa.

Pedro Romão, um dos fundadores da 8.ª colina define o objetivo da empresa: acabar com a “ditadura” dos sabores das cervejas industriais. É um autodidata para quem a “cerveja sempre foi maltratada”. Esta pequena empresa produz cerca de 10 mil litros por mês em todas as marcas.

Florinda, a lager that ferments for less time and at lower temperatures was served as an appetizer.

Joe da Silva was the beer chosen to pair with the entrée, a mackerel ceviche seasoned with lime, avocado cream and dark bread crunch. Diogo Abreu described the beer as having ‘a more hoppy pale ale than the original English pale ales’.

The fish course, crafted by Chef Thomas Faudry, was a roasted porgy filet with exotic vinegar and coriander, sweet potato foam in raz el hanout. It was served with Urraca Vendaval, a beer ‘associated with rebellion’. Diogo Abreu talked of how this production suffered the addition of ‘hops during fermentation to give the beer more aroma without making it any more bitter’.

The meat course was a ribs mijoté cooked in Zé Arnaldo beer, cocktail onions, celery cream, honey cake croutons, 70% chocolate chips and brown glazed. The same Zé Arnaldo beer was served with the food itself. Diogo Abreu describes it as a porter, which is ‘style coming from London, drunk on a daily basis by those who worked in the ports’.

Coffee and mignardises were served with Iolanda, a ‘double India pale ale, that is, one which is produced with more malt and hops than a regular pale ale’.

Each pairing was conceived to trigger the senses. The beers must have quality on their own. And so must the menu.

Harmony between food and drink varies according to the choice of dishes and beers but what is most important here is the experience. 쐽

No jantar foram servidas seis cervejas. A Florinda, uma lager que fermenta durante menos tempo e a temperaturas mais baixas, serviu de aperitivo.

Para acompanhar a entrada, um ceviche de cavala temperado com cebolinho e lima, creme de abacate e crocante de pão escuro, a escolha recaiu sobre a Joe da Silva, descrita por Diogo Abreu como “uma pale ale mais lupulada do que as pale ales originais inglesas”.

O prato de peixe, criado pelo chefe Thomas Faudry, foi um filete de pargo assado com vinagrete exótico e coentros, espuma de batata-doce em raz el hanout. Foi servido com uma cerveja “associada à rebeldia”, a Urraca Vendaval. Diogo Abreu explica que nesta produção foi adicionado “lúpulo na fermentação para dar aroma à cerveja e não mais amargor”.

A carne foi um mijoté de mendinha cozida em cerveja Zé Arnaldo, cebola cocktail, creme de aipo, crotões de bolo-de-mel, raspas de chocolate a 70% e castanha glaceada. A cerveja Zé Arnaldo serviu também para acompanhar.

Diogo Abreu descreve-a como uma porter que é “um estilo originário de Londres, consumido diariamente pelos trabalhadores dos portos”.

O café e mignardises foram servidos com a Iolanda, uma “double India pale ale, ou seja, é produzida com muito mais malte e lúpulos do que uma India pale ale normal”.

ounded in Reims in 1734, Taittinger is a globally renowned Champagne brand. After being acquired by the American private investment company Starwood Capital Group in 2005, it went back into family hands a year later. Pierre-Emmanuel Taittinger is currently the president of the house, relying on the support of his family, including his daughter Vitalie Taittinger, artistic director of the brand, and his eldest son, Clovis Taittinger, who is export manager.

Essential got the chance to speak with the latter to find out a bit more about the current state of the luxury drinks world in general and the company in particular.

After a career linked to financial consultancy and later working in the real estate and hotel industries, Clovis put his heart and soul into the family project. As of 10 years ago, the man who is also deputy director of Taittinger has helped safeguard the identity of a house that spans 280 years of history. For Clovis, quality, consistency and creativity are three key words that have contributed to keep the brand in a leading position in the sector. After all, Taittinger is in sixth place globally, owner of the third-largest property in the Champagne region, covering almost 300 hectares.

Após ter sido adquirida pela empresa de investimento privado norte-americana Starwood Capital Group, em 2005, regressou ao domínio da família um ano depois. Pierre-Emmanuel Taittinger é quem assume, atualmente, a presidência da casa, contando com o apoio da família, incluindo da filha, Vitalie Taittinger, diretora artítisca da marca, e também do filho mais velho, Clovis Taittinger, responsável pelo departamento de exportação. Foi com ele que a Essential teve a oportunidade de conversar a fim de ficar a saber um pouco mais sobre os momentos vividos atualmente no universo das bebidas de luxo, em geral, e na empresa, em particular. Depois de uma carreira ligada a consultoria financeira e, posteriormente, ao ramo imobiliário e hoteleiro, Clovis começou a dedicar-se de corpo e alma ao projeto familiar.

De há dez anos para cá, o também diretoradjunto da Taittinger tem ajudado a salvaguardar a identidade de uma casa que leva já 280 anos de história. Qualidade, consistência e criatividade são, para Clovis, três das palavraschave que têm contribuido para manter a marca numa posição de destaque no setor.

Afinal de contas, a Taittinger encontra-se em sexto lugar a nível mundial, possuindo a terceira maior propriedade da região de Champanhe, que soma quase 300 hectares.

the service of Taittinger as a true adventure, but also as a constant learning curve. “I’m still young. The assessment I make is that I know that I don’t know. I think if I have learnt something about the last 10 years, or even before, is that quality is always paid. Quality is consistency; consistency in the relationship, in the vision, in the attitude.” For that same reason, his biggest challenge has been “to make people believe, to make people more creative, more passionate”. He adds: “We are our own worst enemies and I think it’s an everyday mission to make people use their own capacities, to make people dream, to make people love.”

Clovis believes that working in an independent family business brings some advantages that one probably wouldn’t find at other brands associated to large groups.

“The decision is very quick; the relationship with people is direct. You’re free to speak, to act, to do things, but the main challenge is to use this freedom.” It’s this family spirit and the freedom that comes with it that he assures is essential for the success of the brand. “We don’t work alone. We all work together for others, for the customers, partners, final consumers... Despite being a company linked to tradition, inside the company we can be crazy, creative and fun, as well.” According to Clovis, Taittinger evokes a bubbly spirit, so bubbly in fact that its growth has been constant, especially in the last six years – the house currently produces around 6 million bottles per year.

But what makes Taittinger so different to the rest of the Champagne brands on the market? Clovis is assertive in his answer: “Champagne Taittinger is made by Mrs and Mr Taittinger [Clovis’s parents], so it’s a quality commitment, and for me that’s a big difference in terms of approach.” And the goal is clear: “The aim of our company is really to be a leader of quality over quantity, focusing on the craftsmanship, on tailor-made products and a family relationship with our customers and partners.”

Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs (100% Chardonnay) and Comtes de Champagne Rosé (70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay) are indubitably the stars of the house. The first is the maximum expression of the spirit of the brand, made from the best harvests of Côte des Blancs and aged for 10 years.

The second is considered the Maison’s rarest Champagne, produced in limited quantities and only in the best years. Its rarity is owed to the percentage of red wine (between 12% and 14%) in the www.essential-madeira.com 78

“Não há espaço para medos”, explica. Não é por isso de estranhar que encare esta década ao serviço da Taittinger como uma verdadeira aventura, mas também como uma constante aprendizagem. “Ainda sou jovem. Só sei que ainda não sei tudo. Penso que aquilo que aprendi nestes últimos dez anos (e não só!) é que a qualidade se paga e tem que ser consistente. E essa consistência tem que passar pelas relações, pela visão e pela atitude.” Por isso mesmo, o seu maior desafio tem sido “fazer com que as pessoas acreditem, que sejam mais criativas e mais apaixonadas”. E acrescenta: “Os nossos piores inimigos somos nós próprios. A minha missão diária é fazer com que as pessoas usem as suas capacidades, que sonhem e que amem.”

Clovis acredita que trabalhar numa empresa independente e familiar traz algumas vantagens que provavelmente não encontraria noutras marcas associadas a grandes grupos.

“As decisões são rápidas e as relações com as pessoas são diretas. Temos liberdade para falar, para agir e para fazer coisas. Mas o principal desafio passa por saber usar essa liberdade.” É esse espírito familiar e a liberdade que daí advém que garante serem essenciais para o sucesso da marca. “Não trabalhamos sozinhos, trabalhamos todos juntos, seja para clientes, parceiros ou consumidores finais e, embora haja esta ligação a todo um legado, temos espaço para ser um pouco loucos, criativos e até mesmo engraçados.” Segundo Clovis, a Taittinger evoca um espírito borbulhante, tão borbulhante que o seu crescimento tem sido constante, principalmente nestes últimos seis anos. Atualmente, são produzidas cerca de seis milhões de garrafas por ano.

Mas o que fará a diferença entre a Taittinger e as restantes marcas de champanhe do mercado? Clovis é perentório na sua resposta: “Quando um champanhe é feito pelos próprios donos da marca, neste caso a Sra. e o Sr. Taittinger [pais de Clovis], tem que haver um compromisso de qualidade e isso pressupõe uma grande diferença a nível de abordagem no mercado.” O objetivo é claro: “Ser líder de qualidade mais do que de quantidade, privilegiando os métodos artesanais e os produtos feitos por medida e com foco numa relação de proximidade cultivada com os nossos clientes e parceiros”.

Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs (100% Chardonnay) e Comtes de Champagne Rosé (70% Pinot Noir e 30% Chardonnay) são, indubitavelmente, as estrelas da casa. mixture. Clovis describes these drinks as light, fresh and consistent. “You can drink Taittinger from the morning to the morning!”

More recently, the company set its sights on England. The brand acquired around 70 hectares in Kent, making it the first French Champagne house to produce sparkling wine in the United Kingdom.

Domaine Evermond is the name of the

project that Clovis believes is yet another adventure. “This project came from the fact that England is the number one nation of sparkling champagne and it is two hours from Reims, so it’s very manageable. It’s a wonderful land to produce sparkling wines, so we said to ourselves ‘why not?’. I mean it’s an adventure in a country which has great knowledge of sparkling wines and which is very close to us.”

Mais recentemente viraram os olhos para Inglaterra. A marca adquiriu cerca de 70 hectares em Kent, estando prestes a tornar-se na primeira casa de champanhe francesa a produzir espumantes no Reino Unido. Domaine Evermond é o nome deste projeto que Clovis assume como mais uma aventura. “Este interesse veio do facto de Inglaterra ser atualmente o número um no consumo de vinhos espumantes. A localização, a cerca de duas horas de Reims, é também uma mais valia, tornando-se por isso fácil de gerir o projeto.

Sabendo da existência de boas terras para produção, questionámo-nos ‘porque não?’. É um país com um vasto conhecimento sobre este tipo de vinhos e fica muito perto de nós!”

Quanto à possibilidade de ver Inglaterra como uma possível concorrente a Champanhe, Clovis desvaloriza.“São diferentes. Não vejo uma competição, assim como não vejo competição entre os vinhos portugueses e os argentinos.

Penso, isso sim, que há mais oferta. Têm as suas próprias tendências, os seus próprios aficionados, os seus próprios consumidores. No final, as pessoas compram o que querem, o que realmente gostam.”

Na verdade, a Taittinger já tem experiência na produção de vinho espumante fora de França, mais concretamente na Califórnia, numa parceria com a Kobrand Wine & Spirits.

As for the possibility of England being a possible rival to Champagne, Clovis disagrees. “They are different. I don’t see a competition, just as I don’t see competition between Portuguese wines and Argentine wines. Instead I see more offering. They have their own trends, fans and customers.

At the end, they buy what they really want.”

In truth, Taittinger has experience in producing sparkling wine outside of France, more specifically in California, in partnership with Kobrand Wine & Spirits. Under the label Domaine Carneros, this is one of the few Californian sparkling winemakers to use the méthode champenoise (secondary fermentation in the bottle), exclusively using grapes from the region.

As for the brand’s connection to Portugal, Clovis professes his belief in Europe. “Taittinger has been in Portugal for a long, long time. I want to continue to develop a strong relationship with the country.”

He’s equally optimistic about the future of luxury drinks in general: “I think the future is promising and the trend is for people to drink less but better. There will always be a space for good brands and we’ll see more quality long term. I believe in quality and I believe in the future. I’m very optimistic.”

For his brand to remain successful, the strategy is “to work more and better”, says Clovis. “I want Taittinger to incarnate a good quality Champagne, to remain independent and to be even closer to the wishes of our customers.” 쐽

Sob a denominação Domaine Carneros, este é um dos raros produtores de vinhos espumantes californianos a utilizar o “método Champenoise” (segunda fermentação em garrafa), oriundo exclusivamente de uvas da região.

Quanto à ligação da marca a Portugal, Clovis confessa a sua crença na Europa.

“Estamos em Portugal há já muito tempo e este é um país com quem quero continuar a desenvolver uma forte relação.”

No que se refere ao futuro das bebidas de luxo a nível geral, o otimismo é ponto assente.

“Penso que o futuro é promissor e a tendência será para que as pessoas bebam menos mas com mais qualidade. Haverá sempre espaço para boas marcas e a longo prazo veremos mais qualidade. Acredito na qualidade e no futuro.

Sou muito otimista.”

A estratégia para que a sua marca continue a ser bem sucedida passará por “mais e melhor trabalho”. “Quero que a Taittinger continue a investir em champanhes de qualidade para se manter independente e espero também que esteja cada vez mais próxima dos desejos dos seus consumidores”, conclui. 쐽

offee at dinner? Usually it is served at the end of the meal, sometimes with chocolate, others with a digestive. But such a convention, like all other sin the culinary world, has long since stopped being absolute.

The gateways of creativity are open Nespresso Gourmet Weeks’ fine dining route is a prime example for how coffee can be associated with every moment of a dinner service. For its third edition, a total eight Michelin star chefs, including Luís Pestana from Funchal’s William, were challenged to craft a five course dinner with coffee as a linking element.

The challenge is to promote two coffees launched exclusively for fine dining restaurants.

These professional level grand crus – coming from Nepal and Tanzania were developed to make the gastronomic experience of having a meal at a fine dining restaurant even more unforgettable.

Unlike what might be expected, drinking different coffees throughout the same meal is not what is being suggested here. Wine was part of the menu and coffee was used as an ingredient in a sequence of dishes described by Luís Pestana as ‘capable of bringing about many experiences’.

The William’s Chef had coffee used as the basis for freshly marinated salmon with beat textures.

Guest chef Pedro Lemos used a layer of the Exclusive Selection Nepal Lamjung coffee in a spice bread foie gras. This was one of the coffees made by Nespresso specifically for high end restaurants.

It is coffee grown at the foothill of the Himalayas where some of the world’s rarest beans are grown.

afé ao jantar? A tradição manda que seja no fim da refeição, talvez com chocolates e um digestivo. Mas esta convenção, como todas as outras da cozinha, há muito deixou de ser absoluta, abrindo caminho à imaginação.

O roteiro de alta gastronomia Nespresso Gourmet Weeks é um exemplo de como o café pode ser associado a todos os momentos de um jantar. Na terceira edição foram desafiados oito chefes com estrelas Michelin, entre os quais Luís Pestana, do William, no Funchal, que convidou Pedro Lemos para um jantar de cinco pratos com o café como fator comum.

O desafio passa por promover dois cafés lançados exclusivamente para restaurantes de alta gastronomia. Estes grands crus da gama profissional – provenientes do Nepal e da Tanzânia – foram desenvolvidos para que a experiência gastronómica nos restaurantes de alta gastronomia seja ainda mais inesquecível.

Ao contrário do que se podia imaginar, a proposta não é beber cafés diferentes ao longo de toda a refeição. Os vinhos fizeram parte da ementa e o café foi utilizado como ingrediente numa sequência de pratos que Luís Pestana descreve como “capaz de trazer muitas experiências”.

No salmão fresco marinado com texturas de beterraba, o chefe do William colocou o café na base do prato.

It is limited edition production. Rute Narcisso, ambassador for Nespresso coffees in Portugal describes it as ‘very intense with a hint of roast’.

Coffee also helped to garnish the langoustine with textures of pee and organic chicken broth served by Luís Pestana and also figured in the veal composition served with pantorras salsifis and celery, by Pedro Lemos.

With a sponge cake, mousse and foam served for dessert came the only coffee which was actually drunk in the service, the Exclusive Selection Kilimanjaro Peaberry. It is grown in Mount Kilimanjaro, in Tanzania. Coffee cherry produces only one bean instead of two, which means that the flavour is more intense. Rute Narciso speaks of a ‘very rare variety’, of the Arabic species, which is ‘super fruity, super balanced with an intense note of aroma which can be very pleasant in pairings’.

Both these Exclusive selection coffees will be made available to Michelin star restaurants starting October.

Dinner services such as this one show it is possible to find harmony between coffee and a gastronomic menu. And there is no shortage of options. Coffee is grown in 60 countries. Nespresso is a producer in 12 of them.

Rute Narciso sees parallels with wine as different grape varieties and their terroir hold an influence over the end result. ‘In Portugal there is much talk of the Touriga Nacional as being Portugal’s finest grape, from Douro and from Alentejo, very much in the same way as I have Arabic coffee from Colombia which us nothing alike the Arabic coffee one gets from India’. Emphasising the differences, ‘Colombia has more to do with red fruits or notes of wine. Should I head to India, I’d prefer to work on its intensity through notes of spices’.

It is through this variation of psecies, robust and Arabic, terroir and blends as well as roasting techniques that one can widen the scope of coffee making. In Portugal it is customary to drink an espresso for breakfast or after a meal.

While Rute Narciso sees no harm in this, she adds ‘if I like coffee, be it more intense or more balanced, do I need to add sugar?’ 쐽

CHEFS LUIS PESTANA AND PEDRO LEMOS

No foie gras com pão de especiarias, o chefe convidado, Pedro Lemos, utilizou uma camada de café Exclusive Selection Nepal Lamjung, um dos dois desenvolvidos pela Nespresso para os restaurantes de alta cozinha.

Trata-se de um café produzido no sopé dos Himalaias, onde é cultivado um dos grãos mais raros do mundo. É uma produção limitada. Rute Narciso, embaixadora do café Nespresso em Portugal descreve-o como “bastante intenso com uma nota torrada”.

O café também ajudou a guarnecer o lagostim com texturas de ervilhas e caldo de frango biológico, servido por Luís Pestana e esteve na composição da vitela mirandesa, servida com pantorras,salsifis e aipo,de Pedro Lemos.

Com a sobremesa um sponge cake, mousse e espuma, foi servido o único café efetivamente bebido em todo o jantar, o Exclusive Selection Kilimanjaro Peaberry. Tem origem no Monte Kilimanjaro, na Tanzânia. A cereja de café produz apenas um grão, em vez dos habituais dois, o que significa que o sabor é concentrado. Rute Narciso fala numa “variedade muito rara”, da espécie arábica, “super frutado, super equilibrado, com uma nota muito aromática, que é muito agradável para fazer estes pairings”.

Estes dois cafés Exclusive Selection estarão disponíveis em restaurantes com estrelas Michelin a partir de outubro.

Estes jantares demonstram que é possível encontrar harmonia no uso do café numa ementa gastronómica. E opções de escolha não faltam. Há 60 países produtores. A Nespresso produz em 12 deles.

Rute Narciso estabelece um paralelismo com o vinho, onde as diferentes castas e sobretudo o terroir influenciam o resultado final. “Em Portugal falamos imenso da casta touriga nacional. More awards for Madeira Wine The Pereira D’Oliveiras have won nine out of the total 20 international awards won by Madeira Wine at the Councours Mondial de Bruxelles (CMB) and the International Wine Challenge (IWC). Harvests from several different years were awarded, the Malmsey 1994, winner of the CMB’s gold medal, being one of them.

Three other wine makers saw their own wines awarded, though only at the IWC. Henriques & Henriques pulled off a total eight awards in four categories while Justino’s won four awards and Blandy’s had one of their wines awarded.

This year the CMB took place in the city of Valladolid, in Spain, and gathered a jury of more than 300 specialists. The IWC had more than 5 thousand wines from all around the World competing.

A casa Pereira D’Oliveira conseguiu nove dos 20 prémios internacionais obtidos pelo Vinho Madeira no Concurso Mundial de Bruxelas (CMB) e no Internacional Wine Challenge (IWC). Foram premiados colheitas de diferentes anos, entre os quais o Malvazia 1994, que conquistou a medalha de grande ouro no CMB. Outras três casas viram vinhos seus premiados, mas apenas no IWC. At Riso, where rice is King, we have a full range of dishes from the well known traditional Portuguese to the very fashionable risotto’s and exotic Asian delights. Here you may find the four corners of the world.

The first sign of quality, which we notice, is the use of homemade stock and of course the large variety of different types of rice. Risottos are prepared with Vianole, Arborio or Venere. The list is almost endless, red Thai rice, Basmati, Jasmine rice and even rice paper is used in some of the delicious starters in a real journey through the world of rice.

The suggestions run from the freshness of the fruits, such as avocado or pineapple, to a variety of meats and fish, especially the scabbard fish and the tuna, two major ingredients on a Madeirian table.

Other not so typical dishes, equally as enjoyable, are available for those who have yet to surrender to our crowned cereal. Roasted Cod Fish with Chickpea Falafel and Yogurt and Lime sauce is one of the preferred choices.

Desserts are no exception to this rice tradition, one “must” on the sweets menu is the delicious Thai black rice with coconut milk served with fresh mango slices or alternatively a sweet rice ice cream.

The restaurant is an architectural masterpiece, tastefully decorated, which blends in harmoniously to the quaint neighbouring buildings. Besides the top floor there is a covered veranda, which is used all year around taking full advantage of the region’s temperate climate.

All the restaurant’s tables look out over the sea and the location is so special that many patrons say that it’s like dining on a yacht.
