Exclusive interview

Minister of Diaspora Hranush Hakobyan on the upcoming Armenia-Diaspora Conference

T

he 6th Armenia-Diaspora Conference will be held from the 18th to 20th of September this year. TourInfo had an interview with Minister of Diaspora Hranush Hakobyan to disclose some interesting details about the conference and the future programs of the Ministry of Diaspora for the year 2017.

-Honorable Mrs. Hakobyan, thank you for accepting our request for an interview. Could you please briefly tell our readers about the origin and importance of the 6th ArmeniaDiaspora Conference? As you already mentioned, the conference will be held on 18-20 September 2017. Nearly 1400 Armenians from 70 countries, representing the Diaspora, Armenia and Artsakh have already confirmed their participation in the conference. Compared to the previous 5 conferences, this one will be broader and will feature four panel discussions with the following corresponding responsible organizations: Ministries of Defense, Foreign Affairs, International Economic Integration and Reforms and Diaspora. We hope that the conference becomes a crucial and effective platform to consolidate the potential of Armenians from all over the world. -It turns out that the conference is organized periodically and focuses on the solution of a certain issue every time. What are the main topics of the 6th conference? Since the establishment of the Ministry, Armenia-Diaspora relations have moved to a whole new level. In this context, pan-Armenian conferences have become of great importance, but they are not held annually. Such conferences were held in 1999, 2002 and 2006, but starting from 2011, the conferences have been organized by the Ministry of Diaspora. This year, 3 plenary and 16 panel sessions will be held within the framework of the conference in order to discuss economic development issues, regional challenges and national security dynamics, as well as the foreign policy agenda of Armenia and the preservation of the Armenian identity. -In addition to the conference, what other essential projects will be organized this year? I would like to emphasize the “We Sing Komitas” Pan-Armenian Festival, which is going to be held on 25 September 2017. In the meantime, the Ministry continues to carry out the “What are YOU doing for Artsakh?” movement. Another important initiative is the support of the Diaspora to bordering villages. -Since our target group is mainly tourists, what would you wish our guests? When Pope Francis visited Armenia, he called his trip “pilgrimage to the first Christian nation”. He compared our homeland with a radiant spirit, luminous center. Every person who steps on Armenian land will surely feel like he is at the crossroads of civilizations...Upon departure, he will always want to return.. 8 TOURINFO MAGAZINE

What to taste in Armenia?

Imam Bayeldi

It

is stuffed eggplant traditionally filled with ground lamb, seasonings, and pine nuts, then baked until the eggplant is silky, and the flavors marry into an incredible taste that would delight the most sophisticated palate. It is a delicious light summer dish to try.

Ingredients

• • • • • • • • • •

6-10 eggplants, as small as you can find them enough to fill up. 2 medium brown onions, sliced in thin crescents 3-4 medium ripe tomatoes, or the equivalent in canned whole tomatoes, diced 1-2 bell peppers, or a mixture of bell peppers and jalapenos, sliced or coarsely diced. 3-4 cloves of garlic, sliced very thin or minced 1/2 bunch of cilantro or parsley, chopped coarsely 1/2 can tomato sauce (Optional) 1 tbsp sweet pepper paste Extra-virgin olive oil Salt and pepper

Preparation • Cover the bottom of the pan generously with the olive oil and tomato sauce. If you are using the sweet pepper paste, stir it with the tomato sauce and oil. • Make a slit lengthwise on the top of each eggplant, leaving about an inch on each side. Prick the eggplants a few times with a fork. • In a pan, sauté the eggplants in olive oil until slightly soft. This will allow you to open up the “pocket” that you made by slitting the eggplants. Remove from the pan. Sprinkle with salt the bottom of the pocket (to taste). Arrange in the baking dish side-by-side with the pocket facing up. • In the same pan, sauté the onion, peppers, tomatoes, garlic, and cilantro (or parsley) until the onions are soft but not brown. You will need to add the vegetables successively in the order listed. Salt and pepper to taste. You can also add a handful of pine nuts or chopped walnuts to the onion mixture. This increases the protein content and adds a crunchy texture. • Fill the pocket of each eggplant with the onion mixture. • Cover and bake at 325-350 F (150 0C) in a pre-heated oven for about 1/2 hour, then uncovered for about 1/2 hour. Remove and let it cool to room temperature. • Garnish with more chopped parsley or cilantro when serving.

And don’t forget to add love while cooking and smile while serving)) 20 TOURINFO MAGAZINE

Komitas! “He is the savior of Armenian music”

Arshag Chobanian (story writer, journalist)

B

orn in September 26, 1869, Soghomon Soghomonyan (Komitas) was an Armenian priest, musicologist, composer, arranger, singer, and choirmaster, who is considered the founder of Armenian national school of music. He is recognized as one of the pioneers of ethnomusicology. Orphaned at a young age, Komitas was taken to Etchmiadzin, Armenia’s religious center, where he received education at the Gevorgian Seminary. Following his ordination as vardapet (celibate priest) in 1895, he studied music at the Frederick William University in Berlin. During the Armenian Genocide— along with hundreds of other Armenian intellectuals—Komitas was arrested and deported to a prison camp in April 1915 by the Ottoman government. Komitas is widely seen as a martyr of the genocide and has been depicted as one of the main symbols of the Armenian Genocide in art. In the

The following landmarks in Armenia have been named after him: • The central square of Vagharshapat (Etchmiadzin) • The Yerevan State Musical Conservatory • Komitas Avenue in Yerevan • The writers and poets’ pantheon • The Komitas Museum adjacent to the Pantheon, Yerevan city His giant role in the musical history of Armenia is undeniable. This year we celebrate the 26th anniversary of our precious independence. There will be a number of events around the country and specifically in Yerevan. You will feel the festive mood in the air. The streets will be decorated with flags and balloons. To get close understanding of the origin of the National Holiday, you can visit Military Museum of the Ministry of Defence of the Republic of Armenia in Victory park and History museum located in the capital square. While taking your “Independence Day” tour to Victory Park, pay attention to Mother Armenia statue. It symbolizes peace through strength. a guardian of the Armenian capital. Every year on special military occasions, thousands of Armenians visit the statue of Mother Armenia and lay flowers to commemorate the Armenian martyrs of the Second World War. The pedestal hosts the Mother Armenia Military Museum of the Ministry of Defense. When first built it housed a military museum dedicated to World War II. Today, a large proportion of the exhibition space is devoted to the Nagorno Karabakh War of 1988–1994. On display are the personal belongings, weapons, and documents of participants, and the walls are decorated with their portraits. Among other historical artifacts, there is a map on which Armenian forces worked out their campaign for the capture of Shushi.
