T

he Aurora Humanitarian Initiative (AHI) was launched on behalf of the survivors of the Armenian Genocide and in gratitude to their saviors. It spans a number of projects including the Aurora Prize, Aurora Dialogues, the Aurora Humanitarian Index, the Aurora Gratitude Scholarships and the 100 LIVES. The initiative is rooted in inspiring stories of courage and survival that emerged during the Armenian Genocide when 1.5 million Armenians perished. Those fortunate few who survived were saved by the courageous and heroic acts of institutions and individuals who intervened, at great risk. A century later, the Aurora Humanitarian Initiative seeks to express gratitude, share remarkable stories of survivors and their saviors, and celebrate the strength of the human spirit. The Aurora Prize for Awakening Humanity is an annual global humanitarian award to be presented annually for eight years from 2015 to 2023. This accords with the eight years of the Armenian Genocide (1915-1923). The prize is given on behalf of the survivors of the Armenian Genocide and in gratitude to their saviors. The Aurora Prize will be granted to an individual whose actions have had an exceptional impact on preserving human life and advancing humanitarian causes in the face of adversity. The Aurora Prize Laureate will be honored with

Machanents tourism and art “…and we stepped into the Armenian cultural environment…”

W

hen our TourInfo staff entered through the gates of “Machanents tourism and art’’ social enterprise, founded by the Cross of Armenian Unity NGO, a real fairy-tale tour was waiting for us. At the very entrance, we were welcomed by the assistant who escorted us to the director’s room who took the responsibly of guiding us around. The tour started at the Museum where we saw samples of different ancient karasses, scales, furniture, stones etc., all brought from different angles of Armenia. Led to the upstairs, we got introduced to the Ethnic innovation center for the children to study and develop their IT skills. One of the most thrilling parts of our tour was the moment when we saw the School on the wheels built with the old stones of ruined buildings of Northern Avenue. In the school we got involved in the process of painting, art and craft making, carpet weaving with eco wool, national costume (Taraz) sewing, even cooking and baking, wine producing etc. and all within the borders of one organization, shortly speaking, we felt like at home. By the way, the school is also running to help and support sick and disabled children to study. Do you think that this is the end of the story? Definitely no, because the Guesthouse and the Hotel with Armenian interior and exterior design welcomed us as well. We got surprised when noticed the tourist map covering a great number of pins each put by tourists who visited this exclusive and unique Machanents tourism and art organization. Based on the director’s words, the number of tourists 14 TOURINFO MAGAZINE

visiting them increases year by year including the ones from Japan, Korea, Philippines, European countries etc… The smell of wine led us to the Wine Hall of worlwide poets where Grigor Machanents Babakhanyan, the founding director of Machanents Tourism and Art trademark, guided us and spoke about the oldest winemaking traditions of Armenians deriving from Noah’s times. When we thought that could be the conclusion of our tour, the director continued the way to the Machanents Art Gallery with different artworks hanging on the walls ready to be purchased. By the way, on May 15-22, Machanents 3rd international symposium “Brushstroke at the Land of Noah” will be held welcoming many artists from around the world. Could you imagine that this little place even has a Theatre? Yes, it does. Machanents theatre is a place where the students of the School set different performances inviting not only locals but tourists as well to watch them playing. If you have a lifelong dream to act on the professional stage, be brave to act on the spot if attending one of the upcoming performances. Machanents is a giant family representing main aspects of Armenian culture. You know, it even has a motto-“from studying to working’’, logosymbolizing eternity, anthem, even family tree and beyond… We were really excited and satisfied from our little “journey around the little Armenia inside Armenia” wishing you to feel the same while visiting “Machanents tourism and art” situated in Ejmiatsin town, Armenia.

Avanta Dental and Implantology Clinic rated best for service by WhatClinic.com Avanta Dental and Implantology Clinic (address: 5 Zakyan Str., Yerevan, Armenia) has been recognised with an annual award based on patient service excellence ratings from healthcare search engine WhatClinic.com. WhatClinic looked through 12 months data from users of its site, in relation to Avanta Dental and Implantology Clinic including patient review scores, feedback data and clinic contact rates. In 2016 over 17 million people visited the comparison site to find and compare clinics. Avanta Dental and Implantology Clinic was only one of a small number of clinics on the site that met the exacting standards needed to qualify for the award. Not only must the clinic have a consistently high Service Score™ rating to be qualified, but the rating measures the clinic’s commitment to customer service over a whole year, and so represents long term commitment dealing with patients. Less than 2% of clinics on the site were qualified for the award this year. Avanta Dental and Implantology Clinic said today: “We are delighted to be recognised for our commitment to customer service. As a practice, it is something we focus on in everything we do and receiving such positive feedback from our patients is great honor for us and a good motivation to create better conditions for our customers.” WhatClinic.com CEO Caelen King congratulated Avanta Dental and Implantology Clinic and said “Our awards are now in their 7th year, and this year, for the first time - we have made the ratings data that we use to calculate awards visible on our listings. Ratings are useful to both consumers and clinics. Consumers can see which clinics have rated well with lots of other users, and Clinics can evaluate their own performance against others in their

market, ideally with the goal of getting better and better at serving their patients, which is ultimately good for everybody. We believe that by giving consumers as much information as possible we can improve private healthcare services for everyone. With these awards we honour clinics that are dedicated to the highest level of customer care consistently putting the patient at the heart of what they do.” WhatClinic.com is a clinic comparison site that lists over 125,000 clinics globally. Last year over 17 million people visited the site to find, compare and book treatments across a wide range of elective, self-pay medical treatments. WhatClinic.com’s mission is to give the patient, as an empowered consumer, access to all the information they need to make an informed choice, including price, availability and reviews. WhatClinic.com was founded in 2007 by tech entrepreneur Caelen King, and is in operation in over 125 countries.

Legends and myths of Armenia

Legend of Jermuk spa town and the waterfall

T

here are legends about the magical power of the waters in Jermuk. Here the one to be told: “Long ago when the man was still hunting the forests, Jermuk was abundant with several animals. Once an experienced hunter fatally shot a young deer. With great effort, pursued by the hunter, deer rushed away with his last strength to avoid the fatal arrows. Barely turning over thin legs, the deer finally got to the mineral spring pools and fell into the bubbling moisture… and oh, a miracle, after a moment the pain went away, blood ceased to flow, and after a while the deer came out of waters completely updated and full of energy, at the moment disappearing into the dense forests of the nearby mountains. The experienced hunter was shocked by the unlimited possibilities of ordinary water, and the glory of the living water Jermuk has since gone through the cities and villages making

the cured deer as the favorite emblem of Jermuk town and mineral waters.’’ While being in the town, one is caught by the beauty of Jermuk waterfall otherwise called Mermaid’s Hair. According to the legend, there was a princess whose beauty was so capturing that many princes wanted to marry her. But the princess’s heart belonged to the son of a shepherd, so she was refusing everyone. To meet her beloved, the princess was throwing a long rope into the gorge of Arpa River for him to climb into her room and meet. When the girl’s father learned about it he cursed her saying that if they met again then let she turn into a mermaid and never came out of the water. The desire to meet each other was stronger than the fear of the curse and the girl threw her long hair into the gorge and at that very moment, the hair turned into a waterfall - “Mermaid’s hair” waterfall.
