Lusik Aguletsi The Woman in Taraz* about Armenian New Year

L

usik Aguletsi is a prominent Armenian ethnographer, painter and just an Armenian woman who has been doing hard work for almost 4 decades to preserve old Armenian traditions and customs to transfer them to the next generations. No one else than she could explain the core of real traditions and customs of Armenian New Year, and so we visited her to reveal the old traditions with her help…

-Mrs. Aguletsi, thanks for accepting our interview request. Would you please tell us about Armenian New Year in general? Today what our citizens celebrate differs from the original roots. We celebrated New Year in different periods; in spring, summer (August) and of course in winter. Christmas was much more important than New Year due to the holy birth of Jesus Christ. During those days New Year wasn’t a holiday for feast but for a week of lent until Christmas Day. Only at Christmas the whole family, sometimes even consisted of 4050 members, gathered and celebrated the Holy Birth. *Armenian national costume 10 TOURINFO MAGAZINE

-What were the main dishes? As I have already mentioned, on New Year days Armenians kept lent and so meat was not allowed. The main dishes were made of beans and dried fruit, meat was used at Chrstmas. At the night of New Year mother of the family baked fresh bread, mainly Lavash, to make the year prosperous. I would like to mention dishes made of symbolic green bean where every single seed coincides with each family member. - How was the decoration of the house done? The Christmas decorations were of different type, as everywhere the tree called “tonakan tsar’’- feast tree was decorated with different sweets, fruits and handmade dolls especially in the shape of “Kaghand papik’’ or “Kalandos” otherwise known as a Santa Clause. -Can you mention some interesting New Year habits? As the New Year is a family holiday the head of the family; father or grandfather went to a forest on 31 December and took a giant log. The log was put in a hearth to be burnt until the 6th of January. Every guest in his/her turn threw a branch into the hearth. -Are there any specific things to take to relatives’ home in New Year? Though today people take different things, nevertheless previously they took red apple symbolizing Eden, life and continuation of generations. Of course, sweets can also be taken to make the upcoming year sweet.

Legends and myths of Armenia

Legend of Tsaghkadzor

T

saghkadzor is an internationally known resort town, where the sport tourism is very developed and famous among native and foreign tourists visiting Armenia both in summer and especially in winter. The town is rich with high class hotels and rest houses offering a wide range of convenient services. Those who like winter skiing can find all the necessary facilities meeting their needs. As the majority of the names given to the locations, the name “Tsaghkadzor” also covers some hidden meaning. There are several legends connected with the name of the town and here are some of them: Situated in south-eastern part of Tsaghkunyats Mountains, it was very popular place for kings and ministers to hunt. According to one of legends, the town was covered with flowers by

the goddess Astghik to hide from the Giant who was following the beauty through the bushes. When the Giant tried to reach the goddess and touch her, Astghik dropped her flower cloak and the field was covered with flowers. Later the area became known as “Tsaghkadzor’’- Kloof with Flowers. Based on the Armenian historical books, the name of the town is related with the following: One of the maidens of Pahlavuni family ordered to build a castle on the canyon and to set a gorgeous flower garden where the most beautiful flowers of the world were planted. One day a wild wind arose and spread the flowers over the canyon. The girl asked father to build a cathedral where the clergymen would pray and bring the flowers back to the garden. Afterwards the cathedral was called Kecharis and the canyon Tsaghkadzor.

What to taste in Armenia?

Armenian Traditional New Year dishes ------------------------Harisa

Armenian traditional New Year dishes are of great variety and number. They differ from region to region, village to village, but the base is the same: different type of beans and sweets. This is not an accidental use because beans symbolize life and fertility. They are like embryos; you bury them in the soil and they grow giving new life. One of the most famous dishes made with groats is “Harisa’’ cooked in Christmas. This was and is still a very popular dish among natives. In old times the cooking process was very symbolic and every family member should have been involved in the preparation. Spiritually guilty and criminal people weren’t allowed to taste it. To prepare the dish you need: Lamb or chicken, goats, salt, butter. Cook the meat and goats together until the ingredients become melted and mixed. Serve the dish with a butter and salt.

...............................................................................................

“Asilik-Vasilik’’ sweets (gingerbread) “Asilik-Vasilik’’ is a very famous sweet among Armenians. Especially in New Year it was made in the shape of human or different animals. There were baked in Armenian native oven “tonir’’ and if they became puffy, the coming year’s events could be predicted. For example “asilik-vasilik’’s were baked in the shape of the family bride and if it became puffy they believed that a child must be born. By the way, dolls having the same shape were made too for the decoration of the house.

16 TOURINFO MAGAZINE

For the preparation you need: flour, butter, salt, sour-cream, soda, yolk. Mix butter with flour and salt, then add sour-cream and soda. Mix all these together. Leave the dough to rest for 20 min. Cut pieces and give them human shapes adding dried fruit and nuts for eyes, mouth and nose. Bake in the oven. As it’s a New Year, you should cook the dishes with doubled love and serve with doubled smile.

TIME FOR CELEBRATIONS

E

verybody is looking forward to New Year holidays. This is one of the specific occasions which Armenian people celebrate with great joy no matter their age, affordability or mood. Ancient legends and stories from different sources concerning the holiday are also very interesting. As it’s known to us, since the 18th century Armenians adopted January the 1st as the beginning of the year; New Year. Though ethnographers and historians mention that the concept ‘’year’’ was born in Egypt with the invention of calendar year, various nations considered several months as the beginning of the year thus having New Year in different periods.

36 TOURINFO MAGAZINE

Due to ethnographers, New Year had a nationwide nature in ancient Armenia; the whole nation took part in the celebrations organizing great feasts and revelries. The decoration of New Year tree was a must for both Armenians and a number of other nations. Armenian New Year was also called ‘’Navasard’’ originated from ‘’nava-new’’ and ‘’sard-year’’ meaning New Year. As the ethnographers assure, for ancient Armenians Navasard the 1st was a holiday of revelry, when besides songs and dances, different contests were organized where athletes performed their strength. In Navasard holidays the participants also brought first fruits from that year’s harvest performing large celebrations. The stories regarding the origination of Armenian Santa Claus called ‘’Kaghand Papik’’ have interesting background too, due to one of them it was related with Armenian Catholicos Sahak Partev who was famous for his charitable activities. Though today in the 21st century the ways of celebrations have changed a great deal, nevertheless, this holiday was and is still loved among not only Armenians but also many other nations. People wait for the holidays with great enthusiasm and hope creating new dreams and aims for the upcoming year to realize. Taking the advantage, I would like to congratulate the Armenians on New Year and Christmas. Let 2017 be the year of new achievements, love, peace, prosperity, happiness, fulfillment of new ideas and aims.

Wishing You Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Arman Kharazyan
