EDITOR'S LETTER
Welcome
From Friday, 1 April Gunnersbury Park becomes Jurassic Park, with more than 50 dinosaur models on show, ranging up to 18 metres tall at Dino Kingdom. P7 Fluffy chicks are more traditional at Easter. Sara at Hen Corner is sharing the delight of these cute symbols of spring by making her chicks available to see at her local church in Brentford. P8 There are lots of activities available for children, with Easter egg hunts and crafts at various venues in west London. P 10-11 This summer sees Brentford FC hosting some of the matches in the UEFA Women’s EUROs and in the run up to the championship, LB Hounslow has gone all out to provide opportunities for young girls and woman to play. P13 History is usually told through the doings of lords and ladies, but as Chiswick House reopens for the summer they are rediscovering the history of some of the gardeners, craft and tradespeople who made the house and gardens what they are today, in their exploration of the history of Black Chiswick. P14
The head gardener at Osterley House tells us what’s on their list of jobs for the gardens. P16 The Heath Robinson Museum in Pinner is celebrating the 150th anniversary of the artist’s birthday with two exhibitions of his work and a family day in May where children are encouraged to design and make wacky inventions like his. P18-19 Island Yoga London offers classes offering physical, mental and spiritual practice. P21 And Jazz at George IV goes from strength to strength with its programme of great Jazz and Blues musicians every Thursday night. P24

DINO KINGDOM
S
Dino Kingdom
AT GUNNERSBURY PARK
Gunnersbury Park is being turned into Jurassic Park this April. Created by the company who put on the Spice Road Chinese lantern trails in Chiswick House Gardens a few years ago, Dino Kingdom has more than 50 dinosaur models on show, ranging up to 18 metres tall.
.
Unlike the lantern festival, these models are solid and some are designed for children to climb on. They are animatronic, so some will move and roar. There will also be a funfair and food and drink available to buy. The dinosaurs have been on show before in Manchester and Nottingham but this is the first time they will have put in an appearance in London. They range from the smallest, the Veloceraptors, to the largest, the mighty Apatosaurus, mostly between five and seven metres long. The organisers say the dinosaurs, made in China with 3D augmentation, are the most anatomically accurate recreation of dinosaurs outside museums. As visitors
walk through they can download the accompanying app and scan the QR codes to learn more about the creatures they are looking at. There will also be an ‘archeological dig’ where children can discover ‘fossils’ and giant eggs in a sandpit. One important thing to note is that dogs are not allowed in Dino Kingdom (with the exception of sight / support dogs). Full price tickets for adults are £17 at peak times / £14 off-peak. Children (3 – 15) £15 / £12 (infants free). Family tickets (set of four) £59 / £49. Off-peak times are the opening Friday, 1 April and week-days Monday 4 – Thursday 7 and Monday 11 – Wednesday 13 April. Once you have entered Dino Kingdom you will be able to stay as long as you like. The site is wheelchair accessible, in that it is flat, but with the proviso that if it has been raining it will be hard going, as there are no pathways laid down.

HEN CORNER
HEN Corner Sara Ward says “Don’t count your chickens!”
Oh my, I’m really nervous to put our plans in writing in case it all goes horribly wrong, however, I’ve been very excited as I’ve begun the preparations to hatch a clutch of eggs as part of this year’s Easter Celebrations…
transition of adolescence, growing odd feathers in unexpected areas and eating you out of house and home. Speaking of which, if we wanted to hatch them at church so that local families can visit them in the school holidays, then we’ll be using an incubator and heat lamps to mimic their mum. We need to parent them until they are big enough to hold their own with the rest of the flock here at Hen Corner, this could mean them living inside our home for weeks, even months… Have I really thought this through?
It all began in a Sunday School team meeting when we were discussing how to celebrate Easter this year and someone nudged me and said ‘Couldn’t we have some chicks?’ My initial response was ‘It’s not that straightforward’ remembering the last time that we hatched chicks under a broody hen in the back garden and all six revealed their masculinity by crowing an hour before dawn the following Boxing Day. Sadly, we couldn’t keep them as boys together are not only noisy but can be very aggressive towards each other. But it did get me thinking. Newly hatched chicks are lovely, tiny, fluffy and cute for the first ten days, then they start that awkward
If we want to be sure to get some new hens at the end of the project, we probably need to hatch twelve eggs as eight of the chicks could be boys. Twelve little chicks can happily spend their first couple of weeks in a plastic box the size of a small fish tank, but fast forward a couple of months and they’ll be needing much more space. Enough deliberating, I’ve decided that if as many people
as possible can enjoy the delight of these symbols of new life, as we reflect with thankfulness on new opportunities in our own lives, then I’m happy to make this happen. So, we plan to hatch the chicks in St Paul’s Church, Brentford, in the school holidays, with opportunities to meet them at special story times and church services. The chicks will then ‘star’ at Easter at Hen Corner, a regular event inviting families to celebrate with activities such as hugging hens, making hot cross buns and hunting for eggs, both real and chocolate. Looking forward to early June, as the Queen is celebrating her Jubilee, we will be celebrating our own queens on our bee keeping courses. We have protective suits for everyone, so see if you can spot her in the crowd and give her a cheer…
All courses, virtual & face to face, can be found at HenCorner.com

UEFA WOMEN’S EUROS 2022
UEFA WOMEN’S EUROS 2022 Lots of opportunities for women and girls to play football When Bend it Like Beckham came out 20 years ago, setting Keira Knightley and Parminder Nagra on the path to stardom, it was quirky and odd that girls should be not only playing football but succeeding, and mad about the game. How things have changed. LB Hounslow, where the film was made, is hosting UEFA Women’s EURO matches this summer at the Brentford Community Stadium and Hounslow is preparing to welcome the tournament with a big programme of football-based sessions for women and girls across the borough. The tournament kicks off at Old Trafford on Wednesday 6th July, with the final at Wembley on Sunday 31st July. Brentford is hosting four games, on 8th, 12th 16th and 21st July. Hounslow is using its participation in the biggest women’s sports event in Europe as an opportunity to inspire the next generation of players and fans by providing more opportunities for women and girls to play football than ever before. The programme has largely been rolled out through schools but there are a number of clubs which offer girls as well as boys opportunities to play club football or have a kick about just for fun. Kew Park Rangers and Hanwell Town Youth FC have a boys and girls Under 7s Mini Soccer School and teams for girls up to 16 who play on Sundays.
Rockslane Chiswick offers mini soccer and mixed football sessions up to 15. Actonians Girls offers just female football up to 16. They play on Saturdays. Sporting Duet at Riverside Drive, Dukes Meadows, W4, offer girls and women’s football up to 18, also on Saturdays. There is women’s recreational football at Gunnersbury Park, including a session specifically for women with disabilities. Street 45 provide fun and informal football sessions are free and available to young people aged 11 to 18, at Heston Leisure Centre. The Indian Gymkhana Football Club in Isleworth has a women’s team and offers football training for girls aged 6+. The UEFA Women’s EUROs 2022 have also created opportunities for women who want to coach and referee football. Middlesex FA delivered a female only referee course at Rectory Park in March, as part of its commitment to supporting female officials and as part of its Women’s Euros 2022 Legacy Plan. There is also 100FC, an award-winning coaching programme for females (16+) across London, run by Amateur FA, London FA and Middlesex FA. Women are supported with their first steps in coaching through funding for qualifications, coaching placements and ongoing coach support through mentoring.
To find out more about any of the programmes and teams mentioned here, Google Women’s EURO 2022 Hounslow Council, which will bring you to the page with all the links for the various organisations involved in girls and women’s football. f @outandaboutmagazines

CHISWICK HOUSE
Re-framing CHISWICK HOUSE As it re-opens on 1 April
Built in the 18th century, as Lord Burlington’s bold architectural experiment, Chiswick House has always been a place for new ideas. Serving as an exquisite setting for Burlington’s collection of paintings, furniture and souvenirs from his European ‘grand tours’, it evolved to become both a party house and asylum before becoming a Grade-I listed heritage attraction. Burlington’s pioneering and experimental approach still underpins the work of Chiswick House & Gardens today. Re-opening on 1 April, visitors will be treated to the results of two new experimental projects, using art and objects to reflect local cultural diversity and exploring the role of community. As is common in heritage organisations across the UK, the stories of Chiswick House have largely been told through Eurocentric perspectives.
In collaboration with schools and local community groups, Black Chiswick through History is a research project questioning and re-interpreting this history through a diversity of voices. Launching in May, innovative curator-producers Yinka Danmole and Tadeo Lopez-Sendon present a new season of installations and events exploring the role of community, nature and the built environment in relation to our own personal health. Also new for 2022, Lady Burlington’s Summer Parlour, with eminent architect William Kent’s ‘grotesque’ ceiling, re-opens since the start of the pandemic. There will be free daily Spotlight Talks to delve deeper into the shared history of this local treasure. Book tickets to visit the House and Kitchen Garden, open Thursday-Sunday from 1 April. Gardener’s NOTES
Andy Eddy, Head Gardener at Osterley Park & House, writes “Over my whole gardening career I have been asked many thousands of questions but the one that pops up most regularly is how do I prune my wisteria? At Osterley we have a marvellous specimen on the south side of the mansion which is 138 feet long and gives us a spectacular show every spring with the typical mauve flowering racemes and of course a magnet for bees! It does however need regular pruning.
need to train and tie in many of these whippy, new shoots to make the framework for your eventual display. There is a wonderful white flowering variety that can also be grown and this makes for a stunning alternative to the usually grown type. One other thing that is worth
mentioning is that you should always plant a wisteria that has been ‘grafted’ – this can easily be seen by the large bulge on the stem a couple of inches above the level of compost in the pot when first buying, this will ensure that you get a true specimen that will flower in its earliest years and with those lovely, long flowers that we all desire.”
Wisterias put on a lot of long, whippy shoots every year which need to be pruned back to keep them under control. So as to be able to complete this satisfactorily it is advisable to do it twice a year – once in late summer and again in winter when the plant is dormant. In the summer cut back to four or five buds – it doesn’t have to be too precise as the final prune in winter is far easier with bare branches and no leaves in the way. The final prune can take place anytime when the plant has no leaves and you should cut back to two buds as this will promote flowering ‘spurs’ – i.e. buds that produce flowers. Of course if you have a newly planted wisteria you will www.nationaltrust.org.uk/osterley-park-and-house

2022 marks the 150th birthday of William Heath Robinson, the internationally renowned cartoonist, illustrator and artist. His art was so distinctive that his name is included in the English dictionary, synonymous with whimsically complicated machines and inventions to execute the simplest and often pointless tasks. His eponymous museum in northwest London is celebrating with events to appeal to all ages throughout 2022.
18
Set in Pinner Memorial Park, the museum overlooks a lake and is next-door to a small aviary and a popular café in West House, once the home of the grandson of Admiral Lord Nelson and Lady Hamilton, so it’s a perfect setting. The building is designed to imitate his more eccentric creations with wiggly ducts and coils of cable, and is home to the world’s largest collection of Heath Robinson drawings, including landscapes and intricate book

illustrations. Visitors can explore Heath Robinson’s life and artistic development in their permanent gallery which features a timeline, original artworks and interactive exhibits. Until 15th May their temporary gallery is exhibiting Heath Robinson’s Children’s Stories featuring his book illustrations. Then The Humour of William Heath Robinson exhibition will open on 21st May charting the development of his witty style and range of subjects. www.outaboutmagazine.co.uk
WILLIAM HEATH ROBINSON Visitors can enjoy satirical cartoons showing straight faced individuals undertaking seriously daft endeavours. Organisations and institutions, the laws of physics and the workings of fate are all the butt of his gentle humour.
The intellectual summer holiday, 1925
Ironically, it was World War I that established Heath Robinson as a comic genius, with his use of gentle irony to counter enemy propaganda and to relieve the fear and depression both at home and abroad. His work still speaks to our times, whether it be living in confined spaces or facing the madness of war. To celebrate his actual birthday, on Tuesday 31st May, all are invited to a fun-filled family day out on the lawns surrounding the museum, and to take part in wacky Heath Robinson inspired activities. The birthday party will include a fair with stalls, games, exhibitions, activities and performances that relate to Heath Robinson (aka the Gadget King). Pit your wits against the engineering challenges: build the tallest structure, the strongest bridge or fastest/slowest/wobbliest vehicles out of junk or K’nex, Lego or Meccano. There will be demonstrations of large interactive gadgets such as the cyclostomper. The star attraction will be the social media sensation Joseph Herscher who has performed worldwide in museums and at the Venice Biennale. Joseph will give a talk about his machines, relating them to Heath Robinson’s gadgets
and will run a workshop which challenges groups to build their own machine. Come and witness the culmination of Heath Robinson’s birthday celebrations - the valiant attempt to connect
the machines in one long transfer of energy to achieve a simple task – Very Tricky. Very Silly. Very Heath Robinson! Images courtesy of the Heath Robinson Museum
