West London has a new festival. Chiswick In Film festival is taking place over the weekend of 30th September – 2nd October, celebrating the area’s connections with film – both the industry people who live here and the films that have been shot here. Page 20 It comes at the end of a month of festivals. Tidefest is a one-day event at Strand on the Green on Sunday 4th September, celebrating life on the tidal Thames. Page 13

Then the Chiswick House Dog Show takes ‘Harry Pointer and the Philosopher’s Bone’ as its theme on Sunday 25th September. On the same day is Brentford Festival, which actually takes place in Blondin Park in Ealing. Page 18

The weekend of 3rd–4th September is also the Creative Mile, the second time Brentford has organised an arts trail from Kew Bridge to Johnson’s Island, with more than 70 artists showing off their work at eight venues.

This is one of a series of exhibitions at Turner’s house. Co-Curators Dr Jacqueline Riding and Franny Moyle put together collections which they hope will show the many facets of the Jacqueline, artist. who advised film maker Mike Leigh’s the biopic Mr. Turner (2014), said: “What is so wonderful about the show, and so wonderful about working on the show is that we are teasing out the personal aspect of Turner… a very private man.

MICHAEL FRAYN OPENS EXHIBITION OF J.M.W. TURNER’S NUDES

Michael Frayn, (author of several critically acclaimed and commercially successful novels, non-fiction and dramas, including Noises Off), expressed his surprise: “Firstly, this house, which I did not know about, which has been beautifully saved and restored. And secondly, this exhibition itself. The only human figure of Turner’s I knew was the self portrait of him as a young man. So, I was surprised, and others will have as big a surprise as I did, when they see this exhibition.”

“But in these intimate works you see him as a traveller, an adventurer, someone joining in social settings. You see a fascination with women.

Playwright Michael Frayn and author Claire Tomalin, his wife, opened an exhibition of J.M.W. Turner’s nudes together on Friday 8 July in the artist’s former home in Twickenham.

Between the Sheets: Turner’s nudes has received rave reviews for its unique focus on the private life and work of the otherwise much documented maritime and landscape artist. Everyone knows his seascapes and paintings of the River Thames, but not so many are aware he also drew nudes.

By Lucinda MacPherson

Franny, author of the critically acclaimed The Extraordinary Life and Momentous Times of J.M.W. Turner (2016), who came up with the theme for this exhibition, said:

“Here is a man who was called a recluse and a loner. I think this is a Victorian invention about Turner based on the last few years of his life when he was unwell.

8 f @outandaboutmagazines @outaboutmag www.outaboutmagazine.co.uk J.M.W. TURNER’S NUDES

“When you see Turner’s landscapes you get a sense of his awe and relationship to the wider world. In putting these very intimate drawings together you get a vision of the man close-up. You can almost feel his breath on your neck.”

Between the Sheets: Turner’s nudes is open to the public until Sunday 30th October 2022 at Turner’s house, 40 Sandycoombe Road, St Margarets, Twickenham TW1 2LR.

Eel Pie Island has become legend in the history of the British Blues explosion of the 1960s. The Eel Pie Island hotel, which hosted ballroom dancing in the 1920s and 1930s became famous as a Blues venue once trumpeter Brian Rutland started holding jazz sessions there in 1956.

Tidefest

Activities available for adults and children alike include boat trips, paddleboarding, canoeing, kayaking, river dipping, island visits, foreshore walks, an angling competition, art displays, seine netting, live fish tanks, children’s games, a circus workshop, stalls and refreshments.

“We want people to enjoy and learn about as many of the wonders of the Thames Tideway as possible” said organiser Martin Salter.

Tidefest is an annual celebration of the River Thames. Based at Strand on the Green in Chiswick and other locations along the Thames tideway, including Brentford and Barnes, it is an opportunity for a bit of fun by the river and to learn something about the waterway which plays such a huge part in the lives of Londoners, about its history and its ecology.

Famous names who played there included Long John Baldry’s Hoochie Coochie Men (including Rod Stewart), Acker Bilk, John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers (featuring Eric Clapton), The Who, The Yarbirds, The Tridents (featuring Jeff Beck), Pink Floyd and the Rolling Stones. Take a trip over to the island to soak up the atmosphere and see ‘The Sixties on the Thames’ exhibition exploring the island’s music history and the role it played in getting so many big careers off the Oliver’sground.Island is sadly misnamed. Oliver Cromwell did not hide out there during the English Civil War, nor is there a secret tunnel connecting the island to the City Barge pub. But it does have an interesting history nonetheless and this is a chance to visit a place normally closed to the public.

A further bonus is that if left without being cut back at the end of the summer its leaves will bleach and add an important dimension to your winter display. “One of the many plant groups that we use in our borders at Osterley is the huge range of ornamental grasses. These come in a wide range of not only heights and sizes but also with many differing colourful seed heads in the late summer and autumn too. All of these make splendid specimen plants on their own but also grouped together can make a stunning impact, particularly if planted to let the sun shine through their trembling stems and glistening seed heads. Of course you don’t need a large garden to grow these lovely specimens as they will all live quite happily in raised beds or even in pots on a patio or balcony, and being wind proof can take quite a battering in even the most windy of locations.

Very often in Chiswick you see the road opposite the Town Hall or alongside St Paul’s Church Grove Park filled up with catering trucks and film location vehicles and you know sooner or later as you are watching a film or a TV series there will be a scene which is vaguely familiar. Filming is big business in Chiswick, bringing in millions of pounds a year. You may also have glimpsed David Tennant, Hugh Grant or Colin Firth at a local supermarket or the gym. Chiswick is full of film industry people, not just actors but directors, producers, designers, scriptwriters … even Foster Books gets in on the act hiring out antique books for anything from Cyrano to the Barbie film. Chiswick Cinema, celebrating its first birthday this summer, is hosting a Chiswick in Film festival over the weekend 30th September – 2nd October, in collaboration with The Chiswick Calendar Aswebsite.wego to press they are finalising the schedule of films, all of which will have some connection with Chiswick –either in the personnel involved or scenes which were shot here. Each will be screened with a speaker connected with the film to talk about the making of the film.

When Nisia, the previous editor of Out & About, first contacted me asking if she could include a feature on Hen Corner in the magazine, little did I know that I would still be writing our page ten years later!

The first issue that I contributed to, Aug - Sep 2012, was a two page spread with an interview on one side and my first column, Cider in the City, on the other. Looking back over the issues, I’ve kept copies of them all, it’s a special delight to see Nandos, one of our favourite chickens, who made it to the front page. I know that many have been faithfully following our antics over the years and it’s been great to meet so many both online and in person either here at Hen Corner or ‘out and about’ at local events. So here we are, ten years after that first feature, and I thought I would share some highlights of the decade.

CREATIVE MILE Creative MILE

www.creativemile.org

Brentford is holding its second Creative Mile event – a walking trail from Kew Bridge to Johnson’s Island with artists’ work exhibited in locations along the Moreway.than 70 artists are showing their work in eight venues over the mile long route during the weekend of 3-4 September. Starting at the London Museum of Water & Steam, the trail takes in the Musical Museum, Studio Flox, and Watermans Art Centre and winds its way down to the buzzing arts quarter on Catherine Wheel Road where you will find a hive of creatives spaces including The Loft and Johnson’s TheIsland.Museum of Water and Steam is home to several artists, including jewellers, ceramicists, a woodcarver, sculptor and furniture maker, a bronze caster and a Artisticblacksmith.blacksmith Neil Brown creates beautiful objects from steel in his smithy, which is the oldest blacksmith’s in continuous use in London. At the other end of the trail, Johnson’s Island is home to 16 art studios. The artists work in a range of mediums including painting, drawing, printmaking, collage, sculpture, mixed media, mosaics, jewellery, hat-making, music, writing, metalwork and Theceramics.tinyisland is interesting to visit just to see the higgledypiggledy studios crammed into a space which was once used for the old station master’s and lock keeper’s offices. It originally formed part of Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s Brentford Dock. Being able to peek into the studios and meet the artists is a Thetreat.artists who share the space describe it as: “a magical, creative space - where history, art and nature are woven together,” surrounded as it is by canal views with colourful narrowboats, herons and the occasional flash of a Foundingkingfisher.creative director ‘Mr Mr Pearce’ said: “I originally got the idea of a Brentford art trail when I had a studio on Johnson’s Island. One of the things I noticed was how many people coming to our open studios would say that they had lived in the area for years and never knew we were there. This got me thinking about how we could increase awareness…” 26 f @outandaboutmagazines @outaboutmag www.outaboutmagazine.co.uk
