Saturday 15th August 2015. Anstey Nomads F.C. vs Arnold Town F.C. A big welcome to all supporters, players, and officials for this afternoon’s league fixture. It seems like just yesterday the 2014/15 season had ended and yet we here we are ready to start the 3rd game of the season already. It’ll be interesting to see how both teams look to set there mark and rise to the top end of the table early and give themselves a good winning form. Those of you with a keen eye for statistics and history in football will know that Nomads beat Arnold the last time we met 4-2 at this very ground but Arnold did win the earlier meet up by 1-0 on their ground. Therefore it should be interesting whether the home ground advantage will have any influence of the game, I know those Noisy Nomads fans will hope so. Whatever the result of the game it should be a great matchup and I hope Anstey and Arnold fans alike will enjoy this one!

Key Things to watch for: With this season just beginning to rev into full gear expect some high typo plays and a physical game as both sides try to set the bar for the rest of the season, players for both sides will also be trying to give a little extra to secure their position in the team.

Around the Counties by Stan Wilton There wasn’t exactly a goal rush on the opening day of the East Midlands Counties League season. Indeed, only 23 were scored in the ten games, half of which were settled by the only goal. Early leaders are GEDLING MINERS WELFARE, whose 5-0 win against GREENWOOD MEADOWS at Lenton Lane suggests that it might be another season of struggle for last season’s wooden spoonists who escaped relegation due to the division playing with a club short all last season and only one application for promotion. Jack Hopper put Gedling ahead in the fifth minute and Tony Brown doubled the advantage 14 minutes later. Second half goals, again led by Jack Hopper, from Kelvin Mushambi and Jordan Whitehead completed the rout to send the visitors to the pinnacle for perhaps the first time ever. Louis Evans’ 30th minute spot kick for promoted MICKLEOVER ROYALS was all that separated them from ARNOLD TOWN at Eagle Valley as the new boys opened their account with a win. And similarly, Ben Harris’s 65th minute strike proved to be the only point of separation as AYLESTONE PARK, one of last season’s strugglers, opened their campaign with a win at fancied BORROWASH VICTORIA. Darren Taylor, one of the mainstays of the ANSTEY NOMADS attack last season, ensured that his side also started with a win, coming from behind to beat another of the fancied sides, ELLISTOWN & IBSTOCK UNITED, who had such a good initial season last term. Lee Hillier had given the visitors the lead following a goal-less first half, but Joe Hartopp levelled after 66 minutes and Taylor struck with his first goal of the season in the last minute to give Nomads the best possible start. BLABY & WHETSTONE ATHLETIC, are tipped to do well this season but they got off to a losing start at GRAHAM STREET PRIMS. Again the home side had to come from behind to claim the points after Aaron Preston had given Athletic a 29th minute lead. Michael Fitzhugh and Graham O’Reilly scored within three minutes of each other to turn the result on its head midway through the second half. Kieran Linnett’s goal just after the hour was sufficient to give BARROW TOWN the points on their visit to HOLBROOK SPORTS, with the hosts, who have been banging in goals just for fun in their pre-season games, surprisingly being unable to find the net. Mark Smith and Elliott King both scored in the opening 24 minutes of KIMBERLEY MINERS WELFARE’S home game against HOLWELL SPORTS. And Mitch Slawson’s 61st minute thind meant that the Miners jumped into the dizzy heights of second place in the league’s first table. Substitute Chris Waldrum settled the issue in favour of ASHBY IVANHOE on their visit to RADCLIFFE OLYMPIC with the only goal of the game five minutes from the end, and Dave Leigh’s 25th minute strike was the only goal of the game at Lees Lane where SOUTH NORMANTON ATHLETIC opened up their season with a win over last season’s runners up ST ANDREWS. Although no doubt other clubs will have different thoughts, it does rather look to me that the only one of the pre-season fancied clubs to begin with a win are RADFORD…

who were superb last season after an indifferent start. Three second half goals from David Udoh, Carey Knight and Joe Ashurst ensured victory over a STAPENHILL side who could only muster one in reply.

News from the Nomads! By Reece Preston-Hayes

It’s been a busy time at the Nomads since the end of last season, as you can see by looking around the ground, we have worked hard on our fantastic pitch to make sure it’s in great playing condition, towards to latter stages of last season we had a few changes around the ground, a fence was put up to separate the ground from the car park, late last season we remodelled the clubhouse and added an extra row of chairs to our seating area. We’ll continue to spruce up the facilities at Davidsons Homes Park until they are the best they can be. Other work of the pitch includes a brand new redesign of the programme covers and of the structure of the programme itself, but you can see that for yourself else you wouldn’t be reading it. Feel free to send praise (or complaints) to me (Reece Preston-Hayes,) I’ll be in tea bar once again ready to serve hot drinks with a smile. It’s not all been good news from the Nomads as our hardworking friendly gateman Nigel had to step down due to work and family commitments, we’d like to offer Nigel our thanks for the years of service managing the flood of supporters coming into the ground, and we’d like to hope that if he ever finds time that he comes and sees us again! Switching focus from members having to step down to new members joining our family, Nomads announced during the offseason the appointment of our new chairman Mike Prizeman.

Kit Handover By Ian Grogan There will be a kit handover presentation on the pitch between David Green, Anstey Manager of Sturgess / Hyundai and the Anstey Nomads Management. We are delighted that they have sponsored our first team kit for the fourth season in a row; we are very grateful for their continued support and we hope they’ll be treated to a fantastic game of football.

FRIENDLIES SHOW PROMISE FOR NOMADS By Reece Preston-Hayes Now I know what you’re going to say, Reece the friendlies were weeks ago, the season has started and we’ve already played two games, WHERE ARE THE MATCH REPORTS. Well I’m afraid I was “unfortunately” on vacation and enjoying the sun, and it’s very hard to write a match report of games you haven’t seen. What I did see though is the majority of the friendlies and although the results weren’t always much to be proud of the actually games showed a lot of promise, especially for those who are rising through our developmental ranks but also our long standing players showed that they’ve still got plenty to offer us, for those of you who don’t know Nomads won’t be fielding a Reserve side this season as they struggled a lot last season to even field a side, which is a really big shame but instead Nomads will debut an Under 21’s side playing in the Midlands Football League under 21 North division. We will also be continuing our Under18’s side who last season just missed out on top position and had a great cup run beating one of my personal rival clubs Oadby Town. So with the already strong squad we ended last season with and the our developmental teams getting stronger and more ambitious we may see a few lads step up from time to time to show their skills in the big league, and with 3 points under our belt in the league we have the potential do really well, let’s just hope I didn’t jinx it!

A Brief history of the Anstey Nomads F.C. The Nomads were formed in 1947 and were champions of the Leicestershire Senior League in the seasons 1951-52 and 1953-54. The following season the Club recorded its’ highest ever attendance of 4,500 against the Athenian League side Hayes in the 2nd round of the FA Amateur Cup. But just one year later the Club decided to join the Central Alliance. In 1966-67 the East Midlands Regional League was formed, mainly from Clubs in the Central Alliance, and of the six seasons the Nomads spent in this League, they gained a top four place in three of them. In 1994-95 the Nomads created history by winning both the Leicestershire FA Senior Cup and the Junior Cup in the same season. In 2008-2009 season the Nomads had one of their most successful seasons by winning the Leicestershire Senior League, The Battle of Britain Cup, The Rollestone Charity Cup and The Beacon Bitter League Cup. Our first season in the EMCL 2009/2010 saw the Nomads finish bottom but our good reputation helped us not get relegated and we stayed in the EMCL Season 2011-12 Nomads were in the F.A Cup for the first time in our history The 13/14 season was a time of transition for the Nomads, with some struggle, we managed to remain in the EMCL. Nomads also had their first Under 18's Floodlit team; they had an impressive season with several players stepping up to our senior sides. 2014/15 Rob Harris became first team manager alongside former Manager Jimmy Withers; Nomads' continued in with Youth development with the Under18's floodlit side, and also will debuted a new Under 16's side. 2015/16 Rob and Jimmy look to continue the form the ended on last season and have a successful season after pulling Nomads out of transitional stage, Nomads will be fielding an U21s side instead of the Reserve side in an attempt to continue our youth development programme. We’ll also continue with an U18’s team for the 3rd year running.

A brief history of Arnold Town F.C. The roots of Arnold Town can be traced back to the 1920s but as far as the current "Eagles" are concerned our history begins with the 1989/90 season when Arnold FC (The Saints) merged with near neighbours Arnold Kingswell. The newly formed club began life with four seasons in the Central Midlands Supreme Division before leaving as champions (1992/93) followed immediately by another Championship season in the NCEL Division One (1993/94). Promotion to the NCEL Premier began a long 19 season spell in the same division for Arnold Town before they opted for the more localised East Midlands Counties League (commencing 2013/14) rather than accept relegation back to the NCEL Division One. Aside from two Championship seasons and a runners-up finish in the NCEL Premier (1994/95) the Eagles have also enjoyed a good deal of Cup success along the way. Arnold's best FA Cup run came in 2002/03 when the Eagles reached the 4th Qual Round losing 0-2 to Scarborough at our former Gedling Road ground in front of 900 spectators. In the FA Vase we have twice made it to the 5th Round Proper in 2001/02 & 2005/06 bowing out to Wroxham and Crook Town respectively. Arnold Town have been fortunate to maintain close links with the professional game throughout the club's twenty six year history. Former players have progressed directly from wearing an Arna shirt to making a name for themselves at the higher level with Chris Freestone (1994) and Ben Hutchinson (2006) signing for Middlesbrough and Tristram Whitman (2000) moving to Doncaster Rovers to commence a professional career. At the same time the list of 500+ Arnold Town players over the years has been littered with the names of former professionals stepping down to help out at the non-league level. The list includes Bryn Gunn and Brett Williams (Forest) plus Mark Goodwin, Adrian Thorpe and Seamus McDonagh of Notts County not forgetting Martin Carruthers who, in addition to playing over 100 games for the club, also co-managed the Eagles alongside the returning Chris Freestone who currently holds the record for most goals for Arnold Town with 119 to his name in 225 appearances. Other well known names to have managed the club over the years include Ray O'Brien, Iain McCullough, Bill Brindley and Phil Starbuck. Arnold Town and its predecessor had played at Gedling Road situated in the centre of the town since the 1950s but following a prolonged and rather messy tussle with the local council and residents association the club were inevitably forced to move out of the town. Arnold moved to their new Eagle Valley home playing their first game there on 21st January 2009; a 3-2 victory over Thackley with Craig Mitchell scoring the first ever goal at the new complex in front of a crowd of 238. Now enjoying a third season of EMCL football the Eagles continue to be closely assisted by the long running Arnold Town Supporters Club who have been actively raising funds for the team since 1990.
