Anstey Nomads vs Stapenhill. 13/8/16

Page 1

Saturday 13th August 2016 Anstey Nomads F.C. vs Stapenhill F.C. A big welcome to all supporters, players, and officials for this afternoon’s East Midlands Counties League matchup. Today we welcome Stapenhill to Davidsons Homes Park for our first home match and first Saturday match in the league this year. Second match day for both teams this year and both teams have had a very different start in their first match. Stapenhill hosted league new comers Birstall United and came away with a win in a match with only 1 goal, the goal came from Stapenhill’s most travelled striker Steven Hart, who has recently returned to Stapenhill. The last time Mr. Hart was in the EMCL was with Bardon who went up a step only to struggle and are now back down in step 7. Anstey Nomads have played two competition matches so far, the first was a historical occasion as we hosted the F.A. Cup for the first time in our history, but still struggled to find our first win in the competition losing out to UCL Premier’s Harborough Town. Then in the midweek we took the deceptively long road up to Gedling for our first EMCL performance of the year. It was a great performance from the lads and we deserved at least a point from the game but it seems we didn’t have that elusive “Rub of the Green” losing 4-3 by the time the final whistle eventually blew at breezy Mapperley Plains. Anstey Nomads got the double over Stapenhill last season the first was a 4-1 victory at Maple Grove with Nomads riding in high form. Stapenhill would then have to travel to Anstey a couple weeks later but after 7 super goals from Nomads I bet they wish they hadn’t It should be a very interesting match-up today, Nomads will be looking for their first points of the season, here’s hoping for a high performance from both teams. Enjoy!

NOMADS BEATEN DESPITE IMPRESSIVE PERFORMANCE. Nomads beaten 4-3 by Gedling despite plenty of positives. Written by Reece Preston-Hayes.

Nomads first outing in the East Midlands Counties League, not the most ideal way to start the season, a midweek trip to Mapperley Plains, home to Gedling Miners Welfare, and usually a cold breeze too. Nomads would be looking to put in a little more of a performance than we gave in our F.A. Cup loss to Harborough Town. It started pretty positive too, both teams looking to create chances and both testing the keepers of the respective teams. However Nomads positive start hit a spanner in the works as Captain Jon Armson had to come off with a minor injury after a late foul upon him, Nomads shuffled up their formation and hoped to give Jon a reason to join the Noisy Nomads in the stands. His replacement was Ashley Akiens who recently return to the club and looks a bit more mature than his previous spell with club. Nomads continued to press forward, Zak Harris made his way through into the box but just lacked the confidence to shoot despite scoring in the pre-season friendlies (Zak stated after the game that the ball seemed glued to his foot and he just couldn’t get it off!) It seemed the game was swinging Nomads way with more chances through on goal, a very close chance came to open the scoring when the ball was whipped in by Sam Marshall, who has come up through our youth ranks after winning all the awards for his team last season, Stacey Coore was at the end of the cross and with his experience it was tough for the keeper but credit to him as he held on tight. The hosts got off the mark first despite Nomads pressure, it came from a free kick in their own half that was (seemingly incorrectly) given for offside, the ball came all the way into Nomads half and Gedling passed it cooling into the middle of pitch just outside the box, the striker took one look at goal and he rocketed the ball straight into the net. Anstey still kept on going though, Joe Hartopp at the end of many long balls, Gedling defenders doing well to push him out wide and give the keeper a better chance to save end shot.

Gedling had a couple of chances at Nomads goal, trying to gain a cushion over Nomads but we defended well and cleared up the pitch for Joe Hartopp and Stacey on odd occasion to run through to goal. The last ten minutes however Nomads regained their momentum and had plenty of chances with balls coming into the middle of the Gedling box but their keeper having a full command of his box. Nomads were rewarded for all their first half efforts with a penalty after a sloppy foul by Gedling, the player rightly booked and Steve Armson steps up and confidently hits the ball just under the bar slightly to the left side of the goal, either way the keeper finally had been beat. Nomads weren’t able to hold the lead too long as after going forward once more towards Gedling’s goal, but being fouled off the ball Gedling swooped the ball over and took an advantage of a confused, annoyed, Nomads. Half Time 2-1 to Gedling, some assistance from the Ref but still another 45mins for Nomads to get back in it. Second half at Gedling and Nomads straight out the gate, a ball through to Joe Hartopp who looked like he took the ball too wide in the box but he hit the ball home right into the far corner, Nomads deservedly back in the game. Gedling took the lead again soon after this time Nomads blocked the first shot via keeper Steph Joyce, then Olly Preston off the line, there was lot of pushing around the box and Gedling fall on the ball again, 3rd time lucky as this time the ball goes in an yet again Nomads behind despite having the better of the match. Joe Hartopp had a great run again reaching the end of the ball but flag up by the linesman, not too sure if he was offside but either way given again, the new laws of the game not being acknowledged however with the ball being played from the defensive line and not where the offence was triggered. Nomads still worked hard everyone giving everything they can to get what they deserve out the match, Nomads without doubt been on top of play for most of the match despite the score-line, Nomads would eventually equalise again late in the game. (Here’s where timing gets strange, my recordings say 21:30 which should be roughly 90mins but according to official stats the time was 71mins.) Nomads

pushing forward with a yet another chance and the ball falls into the feet of Ash Akiens who faithfully hits the ball at goal, it took a slight bobble and for that split moment it looked like we had some sort of luck on our side as we equalise for the 3rd time in the match. Nomads would of settled for the point, after all Gedling took their chances well and that’s what you need to do, Nomads had plenty of great chances but only managed to get 3 in the goal. 15minutes into added time by my watch (85minutes by official time.) Gedling going through again and taken advantage of tired legs after Nomads put 150% into the match, stealing the point from Nomads to take all 3 themselves. Full Time (and then some.) Gedling 4-3 Nomads A disappointing end, a very good Nomads performance to kick off the season, some questionable decisions by the Ref, long travelling in midweek. It’s just another season in the EMCL, let’s hope we take the many positives and build on it for Stapenhill at home.

Match ball sponsor Nomads would like to thank loyal supporter Andrew for sponsoring the match ball for this game. Apparently, he was going to sponsor last week but it was mixed up but his support is always welcome and we are proud to have him as a loyal Noisy Nomad!

A Brief history of the Anstey Nomads F.C. The Anstey Nomads were formed in 1947 and were champions of the Leicestershire Senior League in the seasons 1951-52 and 1953-54. The following season the Club recorded its’ highest ever attendance of 4,500 against the Athenian League side Hayes in the 2nd round of the FA Amateur Cup. But just one year later the Club decided to join the Central Alliance. In 1966-67 the East Midlands Regional League was formed, mainly from Clubs in the Central Alliance, and of the six seasons the Nomads spent in this League, they gained a top four place in three of them. In 1971 Anstey Nomads were chosen to feature on Bartholomew’s Football map of England and Wales, our badge and information (albeit with incorrect founding date) is listed 5th between Andover and Arsenal! In 1994-95 the Nomads created history by winning both the Leicestershire FA Senior Cup and the Junior Cup in the same season. In 2008-2009 season the Nomads had one of their most successful seasons by winning the Leicestershire Senior League, The Battle of Britain Cup, The Rollestone Charity Cup and The Beacon Bitter League Cup. Our first season in the EMCL 2009/2010 saw the Nomads finish bottom but our good reputation helped us not get relegated and we stayed in the EMCL . Season 2011-12 Nomads were in the F.A Cup for the first time in our history The 13/14 season was a time of transition for the Nomads, with some struggle, we managed to remain in the EMCL. Nomads also had their first Under 18's Floodlit team; they had an impressive season with several players stepping up to our senior sides. 2014/15 Rob Harris became first team manager alongside former Manager Jimmy Withers; Nomads' continued in with Youth development with the Under18's floodlit side, and debuted a new Under 16's side. 2015/16 Rob & Jimmy lead Nomads first team to their best EMCL performance, our u18’s continued with our youth progression and a u21’s side provided further youth development. Club won Grounds award from EMCL. 2016/17 Ground overhauled with a fresh new setup for the clubhouse and surrounding buildings, the old changing rooms that we got 2nd hand in 1947 have finally gone and replaced with more modern rooms for players and officials.

A brief history of Stapenhill FC Stapenhill FC were formed in 1947 and ten years after formation they joined the Leicestershire Senior League Division Two and found immediate success, gaining promotion in their debut season and winning the Division One championship in the following two seasons. They remained in that division, apart from a single season (1971–72) in Division Two, winning the top flight, now renamed the Premier Division, twice more – 1986–87 and 1988–89. They then joined the Midland Combination Premier Division, staying there for five seasons until they became a founding member of the Midland Alliance where they remained until resigning from the league in January 2002. Later that year Stapenhill FC joined the Leicestershire Senior League and were promoted as runners-up into the Premier Division. In the 2007–08 season, they were members of the Midland Football Alliance, but after a fire ravaged their home stadium, the club was forced to close down. The club reformed in 2009 and rejoined the Leicestershire Senior League. More recently as proud members of the East Midlands Counties Football League Premier Division Stapenhill FC continues to prosper under the guidance of newly appointed Chairman Ian Gough and his dedicated team of players and officials.

Vinyl Night a success in newly refurbed Nomads! August 5th played host to a rock’ n’ roll vinyl night, the first since the refurbishment of the ground. It was another fun night for all attendees, over £150 was raised for chosen charity LOROS! The next Vinyl Night is on 21st October and the chosen charity is us, Anstey Nomads F.C. Be sure to set a date in your diary and we can’t wait to hit the dancefloor once more! ..And the ball goes widely over the bar, disturbing the birds in the nearby trees.

AROUND THE COUNTIES By STAN WILTON In many ways it is a shame that the season should start with the FA Cup as against league matches, but that didn’t seem to hold back our sides, three of whom made progress against Step 5 opposition. The greatest success story came from relegated DUNKIRK who journeyed to last season’s United Counties League runners-up Leicester Nirvana and came away with a deserved, but unexpected, scalp. Miquel Cunningham put the Boatmen ahead after eleven minutes before second half goals from Shane Smith for the visitors and Jordan Nelson for the home side resulted in a 2-1 win for Dunkirk. Last season’s EMC League title winners St Andrews also suffered an early exit on their visit to BLABY & WHETSTONE ATHLETIC, for whom Tom Hill just before the break and Lee Barratt on 64 minutes scored the goals which saw the home side progress to the next stage of the competition. ASHBY IVANHOE were our third club to claim a place in the Preliminary Round with a 4-3 win over Midland League Premier side Quorn. It was an exciting game of fluctuating fortunes. Luke Thorogood gave Ivanhoe a ninth minute lead, which only lasted two minutes before Nathan Dale levelled. The same player put Quorn in front six minutes before the break but Danny Quinn levelled again four minutes into the second half. Jeavon Seaton put the visiting back in front on 56, but two goals in the space of a minute from Sam Johnson and James Purslow just after the hour completed the scoring and took Ivanhoe through. RADFORD suffered a single goal defeat at Northern Counties East League Premier outfit Bottesford Town, for whom Pembleton was the scorer with a minute of the restart of the second half. Goals from Ben Williang (51), Joel Conteh (59) and Barnes Gladman (84) took United Counties League side Harborough Town through against an ANSTEY NOMADS side who had only Simon Richmond’s 71 st minute goal to show for their efforts. For the rest of our sides it was opening day league matches, and one team who would be highly delighted to start on a winning note were ARNOLD TOWN. The Eagles had a torrid time last season but with new man Dave Marlow in charge at Eagle Valley this time round he ensured his new charges got on to a winning start thanks to a 24 th minute Danny Hayes goal against visiting GRAHAM STREET PRIMS. In the game between landlords and tenants BORROWASH VICTORIA gave newly promoted BELPER UNITED a worrying first taste of East Midlands Counties League football. There was no scoring until Michael Fitzhugh put the Vics in front on the stroke of half-time. A second from Kurt Dallison almost immediately after the interval paved the way for the Vics to record a fine first victory with Idris Kabongo and Mthabisi Miauzi (try saying that with a mouth full of corn flakes!!) adding further goals as the game wore on. Nottinghamshire Senior League champions WEST BRIDGFORD made a good start to their first ever Step 6 campaign winning at GREENWOOD MEADOWS courtesy of a 36th minute Jordan Charlesworth strike for the only goal of the game. Disaster at HOLBROOK SPORTS though where the Brookies, who have lost a number of players during the close season, fell to a 4-1 home defeat to BARROW TOWN despite taking a 26 th minute lead through Sebastian Szondi. Ben Law levelled the equasion on 37 minutes and Grant Ryder, with the first of his brace of goals, put Barrow in front before the break. Ryder’s second and one from Zak Ginvert in the second half gave the visitors a good start to the season. RADCLIFFE OLYMPIC also made a good start with a 4-1 win at HOLWELL SPORTS thanks to a ‘Smith’s raid’. Tom Harris had given Sports a tenth minute lead, but a brace from Jack Smith put the visitors in front by halftime. A second half brace from Ryan Smith extended Olympic’s advantage giving them a great start. Adam Hassall gave KIMBERLEY MINERS WELFARE a 16 th minute lead at the Stag Ground, and, despite losing Adam Morley to a 29 th minute red card, the Stags went on to consolidate a 4-0 victory over ELLISTOWN & IBSTOCK UNITED to make them the first divisional leaders of the season. Jarrod Westcarr, Scott Bailey and a second from Adam Hassall in the second half did the trick. Perhaps it was a case of the ‘Prodigal Son’ returning home for STAPENHILL, for it was a 32 nd minute goal from their much travelled former prolific scorer Steve Hart which sent newly promoted BIRSTALL UNITED home pointless from their first East Midlands Counties League outing. A Luke Crosby penalty after 21 minutes and an impressing strike from Phil Massingham ten minutes later made it a victorious start to the season for SOUTH NORMANTON ATHLETIC who sent AYLESTONE PARK home from Lees Lane with out a goal or a point.
