SATURDAY 8TH NOVEMBER 2014 ANSTEY NOMADS F.C WELCOME STAPENHILL F.C TO DAVIDSONS HOMES PARK FOR TODAY’S LEAGUE GAME
STAPENHILL F.C. HISTORY.
They were formed in 1947 and ten years after formation they joined the Leicestershire Senior League Division Two and found immediate success, gaining promotion in their debut season and winning the Division One championship in the following two seasons. They remained in that division, apart from a single season (1971–72) in Division Two, winning the top flight, now renamed the Premier Division, twice more – 1986–87 and 1988–89. They then joined the Midland Combination Premier Division, staying there for five seasons until they became a founding member of the Midland Alliance where they remained until resigning from the league in January 2002. Later that year they joined the Leicestershire Senior League and were promoted as runnersup into the Premier Division. In the 2007–08 season, they were members of the Midland Football Alliance, but after a fire ravaged their home stadium, the club was forced to close down. The club reformed in 2009 and rejoined the Leicestershire Senior League.

BORROWASH VICTORIA and ELLISTOWN & IBSTOCK UNITED were our only winners in the FA Vase. Michael Lyons early goal put Borrowash in charge as they were forced to switch their tie to Moorways in Derby because of ground vandalism. Central Midlands League side Belper United levelled things up and took the game into extra time where Ross Coxon’s goal six minutes before the end settled things. After a goal-less first half, Jack Murry put Ellistown ahead five minutes into the second period. Theo Stair levelled for visiting Hanley Town with ten minutes left but Tendal Chitiza winner five minutes into extra time put United through. GEDLING MINERS WELFARE fell to a goal in each half from Ash Grayson and a Carl Haslam penalty which saw AFC Mansfield safely home and goals from Michael Fitzhugh and Liam Oliver were not enough for GRAHAM STREET PRIMS as Dunkirk scored seven in reply in the tie at Lenton Lane. In the league, HOLBROOK SPORTS missed the chance to go second when they were beaten 4-0 at BARROW TOWN. Jake Culverwell, James Lupton, Jordan Lever and an own goal were the Barrow scorers. ST ANDREWS extended their advantage at the top but could only take a point from their visit to Selhurst Street against a revitalised RADFORD outfit. John King on half an hour and David Udoh two minutes into the second half looked to have sentenced the Saints to defeat, but a brace from Shay Brennan saved their bacon, the leveller coming in the 88th minute. And SOUTH NORMANTON ATHLETIC also missed the chance to close the gap when they were surprisingly held to a 1-1 draw at Lees Lane by RADCLIFFE OLYMPIC. Joe Hegarty gave Olympic a third minute lead and they proved difficult to break down until Danny Robert grabbed a 74th minute leveller. Elsewhere, BLABY & WHETSTONE ATHLETIC slipped up again losing 2-1 at home to an inconsistent HOLWELL SPORTS. Aaron Preston put Athletic ahead just after the hour but the lead lasted but four minutes before Aaron Ridout restored parity. Harrison Stannard got Holwell’s winner nine minutes from time. BARDON HILL and KIMBERLEY MINERS WELFARE shared four goals in a game which appears to have had an exciting second half, and an even more exciting ending. The much-travelled Jermaine Gordon put Kimberley ahead after 66 minutes and it stayed like that until four minutes from the end when Steve Hart levelled things up for the first time. Liam Honeyman then put The Brewers back in front in the 89th minute only for Andy Fell to square things up again in the fourth minute of stoppage time. ARNOLD TOWN recorded their sixth win of the season with a 1-0 win over visiting STAPENHILL courtesy of Simon Hare’s 69th minute strike.

Post-Match with Rob Harris 1-1. A very physical and exciting game tonight, what are your thoughts on tonight? Yeah it was physical, I think we started out poorly and conceded a really soft goal but after that we grew in stature as the game went on, at half time perhaps we should of gone in even-stevens and not a goal down. To start the second half and go down to ten men within 10 minutes, I think we showed great character to come back and earn a point. You mentioned going down to 10 men, how does that affect a team especially when you're down a goal? Fair play to the lads, I think they all raised the game, which I think they were really doing before the card anyway. I think the card was slightly harsh, there were some very strange decisions from the Ref but I'm not going to blame him for that. The sending off and the goal was mostly down to our own errors, and we seem to get punished for them. But we still showed good character and it was great to get a draw, and really we should or could of won the game. As you say it was great resiliency from the lads and to get that late goal did it feel like a win? Oh yes, they were buzzing in the changing rooms afterwards, everyone was. How many times this season have we played like that and lost, to actually get a point today is much more what we deserve. I think we've turned a corner and we're getting the results we should of been getting earlier on in the year, we've said many a time in our interviews that we've done well even when we've lost. Perhaps we should of even won today, but the amount of times we've said that when we've lost I'm just pleased to get a point and I'm pleased for the lads because they're buzzing. It's a shame we haven't got a game Saturday, but it gives us a breather for a week and we can get some good training done in preparation for the Stapenhill game and we'll see how we get on, and we'll watch the Reserves and hope we can get good results from them as well! Do you have any final comments Rob? Onwards and upwards, things are looking good. I agree, Thank you Rob. Thanks Reece. Interview and transcript by Reece Preston-Hayes.
