Editor’s Welcome

Welcome to Byron Bay, great place to fall in love with and the hardest place to leave!

Welcome to Byron Bay, a great place to fall in love with, the hardest place to leave. “Kavanbah” is the Bundjalung traditional name for Byron Bay meaning ‘meeting place’!

Byron Shire, which includes many smaller townships is the jewel in the crown of the Northern Rivers region, and is the economic driver of the Byron Visitor Economy. Our many Villages have their own special qualities to offer visitors. Byron has suffered greatly from not only the covid -19 border closures, but also from the Northern Rivers 2022 March floods, and the shortage of low-cost housing resulting in the lack of staff.

Byron’s economic landscape is changing with the arrival of new entrepreneurs that are lifting the quality of our tourism businesses with new upmarket wine bars, nightclubs and restaurants. Fashion designers offering very highquality brand names are now available in our retail shops! Many new business opportunities exist in Byron’s recovery.

Byron Bay is bouncing back economically in 2023, with many retailers having had the best retail sales for many years especially over the 2022 Xmas holidays, reports of visitor numbers close to pre-covid days. With the expectations of having a wonderful Byron holiday, to be able to enjoy, “just being on the beach” the visuals are spectacular, our beaches are the envy of the rest of the world, clean, beautiful soft sand that screeches under foot, when laying on your towel you softly nestle into your own body impression, one can only relax!

The surf has been spectacular with many days of over a metre high surfing wave, consistently rolling on shore, some days two metres, or even greater. With crystal-clear surf, our Byron beaches offer some of the best surf breaks in Australia, Byron offers many beaches to choose from. When surfing, be courteous to other surfers and obey surf etiquette! You never know who is in the water surfing next to you, it could be a top Corporate Executive, a politician, a mega super star, or the girl next door. Black Dog Surfing will teach you to surf, if you need help getting started.

Discover Byron’s hidden gems with many walking tracks to explore our diverse eco landscape. I recommend an early morning beach walk, then tackle the steps to the Pass lookout, check out the surfers at the Pass, you could see some local dolphins or whales when in season. Before dawn, set out to experience

the sunrise at the Cape Byron Lighthouse lookout, the first sun that hits the Australian Mainland is at the famous Byron Lighthouse lookout. A walk along any Byron beach is so relaxing, especially late afternoon as the sun goes down, to clear your thoughts, rejuvenate, unwind, set new goals - so invigorating listening to the waves rolling on shore! Take some me time!

Some of our Byron day time activities include, scuba diving or snorkelling out at Julian Rocks with abundant marine life to check out, in our Cape Byron Marine Park, great fishing here! Enjoy a fun day with Cape Byron Kayaks, floating out over the Marine Park reefs, you are sure to see our local resident pod of dolphins, having fun. Have you tried skydiving? Take the exhilarating experience of an early morning balloon ride, when you come down, share a glass of champagne over breakfast. Have some time on the beach to deepen that golden bronze tan, but do not forget to use a hat and sunscreen! Cool down with a huge selection of Ice Cream treats, and natural fruit juices, available close to the beach, or lunch at the iconic Beach Hotel. Go shopping and pick up a memento of your memorable stay in Byron.

For evening activities Byron CBD is easily accessed on foot. With just a short stroll to your first port of call - a cold beer, martini, or a glass of your favourite wine, then dinner at one of Byron’s many famous Restaurants with multi award winning Chefs, offering fine dining and great customer service. Huge variety to choose from (“see page 38” Byron and Beyond, Restaurant guide). Byron has many late-night venues to dance the night away, including the Beach Hotel which has great music, good vibes, a new inspirational meal menu and a large outdoor area. Byron also features many food delights from different countries and cultures from around the world. (Restaurant Guide pg 38).

Ride the Byron Solar Train

It’s been over three years since the Byron Solar Train launched, winning international acclaim and a cabinet full of awards. And still, the charming 1969 era two carriage train remains the only full sized fully solar powered train in the world. A remarkable achievement for Byron Bay. Only a quarter of the energy created by the solar panels on the train and train shed is used to operate it, with the remainder fed into the grid. The Byron Solar Train operates a ten-minute one way or twenty-five minute return service between North Beach Station (toward the end of Bayshore Drive between North Byron Hotel and Elements of Byron) and Byron Beach Station in town, where Shirley Street meets Lawson Street. The coastal track traverses littoral rainforest, endangered coastal wetlands and the breathtaking Belongil Creek, part of Cape Byron Marine Park. There are ten return services daily between 10:30am and 6:00pm. Adults ride for $5.00 one way with children 6 – 13 years $3.00 and children under six years free. Or go all the way with the $30 Ride in Style offer which includes a return adult train journey, lunch at North Byron Hotel and a schooner of Stone & Wood or glass of wine. www.byronsolartrain.com.au

“The Byron Solar Train looks like yesteryear and rides like the future” says Nick Lake, the Solar Engineer behind the train from local firm Nickel Energy. “Being net carbon positive it is proof that we can achieve sutainable, emission free transport. The excess energy generated by the solar system is sent into the grid and powers the local community. It is a beautiful example of how we can power our lives with sunshine and not fossil fuels”.

BYRON BAY

From world-renowned beaches to lush hinterland surrounds, Byron offers something for just about everyone with an eclectic and laid-back mix of alternative, surfie and trendy culture.

Originally known as Cavanbah or ‘meeting place’ by the original Bundjalung people of the area, Byron continues to live up to its traditional heritage with people flocking from everywhere to shop, surf, scuba dive and of course, walk the famous Cape Byron Lighthouse track. Located at Australia’s most easterly point, this walk offers a stunning vista of migrating whales as well as resident dolphins and leopard sharks.

Known to many as the Rainbow region, Byron is home to a thriving local community of musicians and artists and hosts a variety of colourful markets and festivals. The beaches are also popular for romance, with the Byron Bay Surf Club being a favourite wedding venue.

The local Bundjalung Aboriginal people’s name for the area is Cavanbah, meaning ‘meeting place’. Captain James Cook named Cape Byron after Royal Navy officer John Byron, circumnavigator of the world and grandfather of the poet Lord Byron.

According to the 2016 census of Population, there were 9,246 people in Byron Bay.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people made up 1.6% of the population. 64.0% of people were born in Australia. The next most common countries of birth were England 4.9% and New Zealand 2.5%. 76.3% of people spoke only English at home.

Longboard surfers arrived in the 1960s and used natural breaks at The Pass, Wategos, and Cosy Corner. This was the beginning of Byron Bay as a travellers’ destination, and by 1973, when the Aquarius Festival was held in nearby Nimbin, its reputation as a hippy, happy, alternative town was established, although tourism facilities remained minimal. From the 1980s, tourism began to develop in earnest, with the cash-poor surfers and hippies supplemented, and to a degree supplanted, by cashed-up conspicuous consumers. This in turn stimulated the development of retail precincts and accommodation, whilst many still enjoyed a surfers lifestyle with all year round good surfing conditions.

Today, Byron Bay is one of the most up-market residential areas on the Australian east coast with the growth in multi-million-dollar mansions now pushing the median value of house sales up beyond AU$1.5 million in

2017, over a 100% increase since 2013, based on 2018 data from realestate.com.au and more recently since Covid 19 lockdowns, many people can work from home and live where they like, increasing values even more with 30% growth in property values in just 3 months in 2020.

As at 2019, the town is cited as having around 10,122 permanent residents, while being visited by over 2.5 million visitors each year spending almost $800 Million in Byron Shire.

At the same time, the town has not lost its attraction to a diverse range of visitors including surfers, backpackers and visitors interested in the natural attractions of the area. It also supports a healthy cross section of creative artists, craftspeople and musicians, while its more recent hippy/new age past is reflected to a degree in a prevalence of alternative “new-age” shops, “spiritual” services such as meditation and yoga classes, and holistic healing/’wellness’ retreats.

Meander through rainforest and world class beaches to the lighthouse.

The light that shines by night over Cape Byron Marine Park emanates from a tower as famous as the town of Byron Bay itself. Built at the turn of the 19th century to protect ships passing along the coast, Cape Byron Lighthouse stands resolute on the most easterly point of the Australian mainland. Operated by resident keepers until 1989, it’s now automated light is clearly visible from the Byron Bay Township.

Take a guided tour of the lighthouse, learn more about this iconic white tower and find out about shipwrecks and stories from the sea in the Maritime Museum which is below the lighthouse and the artwork inside is ‘a must see’. You’ll enjoy some of the best views of the ocean and hinterland including regular sightings of turtles, dolphins. It is the most easterly point of Australia, and one of the best places to see humpback whales as they pass on their annual migration between May and November.

Please note:

Remember to take your binoculars if you want to whale watch

• It can be a busy place on the weekend, so parking might be limited

• Parking fees apply

WALKING TRACK

Enjoy spectacular coastal views along the Cape Byron walking track that takes you on a hike through rainforest, beach, grassland and clifftops to the lighthouse.

STATE CONSERVATION AREA

• It’s a good idea to put sunscreen on before you set out and remember to take a hat and plenty of drinking water

Keep on track, keep away from cliff edges

Take your swimwear as you may like to have a swim on the way

You’ll need a good two hours to properly experience the walking track – but it’s so rich in delights, don’t be surprised if you reach the end and feel like doing it again. Unwind and enjoy the view as you walk. The 3.7km loop leads you on a hike through rainforest and across clifftops with stunning views of the ocean and hinterland. En route you’ll wander through the shade of bangalow palms and ancient burrawangs, across kangaroo grasslands, along picturesque beaches and up to Cape Byron Lighthouse.

ACCOMMODATION

The four Clarke’s Beach Cottages have direct access to Byron Bay’s main beach and are surrounded by National Park. Staying here is just magnificient, you can wake to ocean views and the sound of crashing surf. Alternatively the two lighthouse cottages where the former keepers used to live have been fully refurbished, heritage listed cottages (circa 1901) makes this a truly unique holiday experience. Be the first to see the sunrise on Australia’s mainland and enjoy watching dolphins, turtles and whales. WATCH THE WHALES

As Byron Bay is the most easterly point of Australia, it is here that whales pass by extremely close to the mainland on their journey to the warm, shallow waters of Queensland to give birth to their young and some species are accompanied by the males to mate. Humpback whales are the stars of the annual whale migration and are one of the most common whales you will see. The male humpback whale is famous for its extraordinarily long and complex songs which travel very far throughout the oceans. Get up close to some of the most awe-inspiring marine life on earth and go kayaking with dolphins and turtles on a guided sea kayak tour. Prepare to be amazed, as the whales may pass gracefully nearby.

It is important to stay 100 metres from the side of their path and 300 metres if a calf is present. However it is amazing how curious they are and like to come closer to investigate. What an amazing feeling it is to make eye contact with such a wonderful creature.

Best spots for viewing: Byron: Lighthouse / Ballina: Lighthouse Hill, Angels Beach, Flat Rock, Skennars Head / Lennox: Rocky Point, Pat Morton Lookout

CAPE BYRON MARINE PARK

Cape Byron Marine Park extends from Brunswick Heads in the North to Lennox Head in the south and was established to conserve marine life in the region The Marine Park has many beautiful assets such as small rocky islands, coral communities, riverine estuaries, coastal creeks and lakes and amazing rocky reefs. There are dolphins, fish, seabirds, plants, sponges, corals, anemones and rare/threatened species such as sea turtles, grey nurse sharks and black cod as well as whales and shorebirds which migrate through the Park and can sometimes be seen from the shore.

Like all marine parks in NSW, Cape Byron Marine Park has been zoned to ensure a balance between conservation and public use and enjoyment. Restrictions apply to activities such as commercial and recreational fishing, spear fishing, collecting and anchoring. So remember to get a marine park zoning plan users guide before fishing or collecting in the Park.

Paper copies of the guide are available at marine park offices, visitor information centres, accommodation outlets, general stores and fishing supply outlets. The guide is also available for free on smart phones and tablets from the Avenza Map Store and as part of the NSW DPI FishSmart app. To use the Avenza Map download the app from iTunes or Google Play.

Northern Rivers MARKETS

One of the unique joys of the Northern Rivers is the consistent access to a diverse range of local markets. Weekly farmer’s markets which are the highlight of the week for fresh locally grown produce. Buy freshly picked produce that is full of nutrients gleaned from our rich volcanic soils and get back in step with what nature intended. Procure products ranging in variety from tasty fruit and veg to home cured meats, free range organic eggs, baked goods and nutrient packed raw foods, with very relaxed friendly atmosphere. Indigenous arts and crafts and other

beautiful things made by local people using unusual natural materials are joined by unusual jewellery stalls, funky one of a kind clothes and colourful imports from Africa and Asia.

And when you need a break you can try some freshly squeezed sugar cane juice or perhaps a steaming cup of chai. The kids can have their faces painted and delight in the original toys, games and fun fairy outfits.

Embodying the Byron Bay lifestyle and everything it represents, HABITAT is a fluid, all-encompassing destination just 5-minutes from the beach and a 10-minute cycle to town. It was designed for a creative and passionate community, who value the good life as much as getting things done.

Byron’s first self-sustained village - where you can live, work and play all in one spot. We’ve eliminated the work commute; our residents can swim their morning laps, grab a coffee and walk to work, all without leaving the precinct.

The village precinct of Habitat represents the “new” luxury. With so many of us looking to disconnect from the online world and reconnect with like-minded people in an inspiring environment, Habitat offers the area’s best lifestyle experiences including the renowned Barrio Eatery & Bar, Bende barre and yoga studio, and a number of health and wellness, fashion and homewares stores showcasing local and design-led brands. Our curated collection of boutique stores includes some of Byron’s leading fashion, beauty, kidswear, menswear & homewares labels. Find the likes of The Habitat Collective, Nice Martin, Shack Palace Rituals, Department of Simple Things, One Teaspoon, Children of The Tribe, The Beach People, Annukka, Prae, Tigmi Trading, Florian Beck, Beautiflora and a new family law firm that has just opened at Habitat, Richardson and Murray.

A DAY IN MULLUM

Mullumbimby is an Australian town in Byron Shire in the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales. It promotes itself as “The Biggest Little Town in Australia”. The town lies at the foot of Mount Chincogan in the Brunswick Valley about 9 kilometres (5.5 miles) by road from the coast. At the 2023 census, Mullumbimby and the surrounding area had a population of 9,483 people. Locals refer to the town as “Mullum”.

The name “Mullumbimby”, meaning “small round hill”, was given to the district by Aboriginal people. The name is derived from the Bundjalung-Yugambeh dialect mulubinba (possibly also pertaining to a native fern which grew in the vicinity).

EAT - THE PADDOCK PROJECT- is an organic market garden, coffee van and roadside shop at 64 Argyle Street, the main road into Mullumbimby. The shop, cafe and garden are open to the public from 7am to 3pm, Monday to Saturday. All garden produce is grown using organic and Syntropic farming principals. Syntropic farming reproduces the interdependent and symbiotic relationships of plants so they can grow together in abundance as they do within a rainforest system. ALSTONVILLE

Alstonville is a charming village set amongst the fertile, green rolling hills on the plateau West of Ballina.

DID YOU KNOW?

boasted 2 pubs, 6 stores, 2 black-smiths, 9 sugar mills, and 4 saw mills.

Alstonville is known for their rich volcanic red soil perfect for growing avocados, macadamia nuts, tropical fruits and coffee. The historic buildings have all the charm of yesteryear, housing a number of art and antique galleries, an historical museum and places to relax and enjoy the locally grown coffee. Originally known as Duck Creek Mountain, the village of Alstonville is central to many farms, orchards and nurseries and is famous for its Tibouchina trees which line the streets and add a vibrant green and mauve colour throughout the village when flowering. A must visit is the Summerland House Farm. Call into The Federal Hotel for that cold beer on a hot day and meet the locals.

Ballina is located about a 30-minute drive south of Byron Bay. The Ballina Byron Gateway Airport is located here and regular jet services are provided to Sydney and Melbourne. The Ballina area was first home to the wider Bundjalung Nation and was a meeting place for the Bundjalung people. The Bundjalung people in the area were treated to a smorgasbord of seafood and bush tucker. The remnants of elaborate fish traps still exist on North Creek. These traps consisted of rock walls surrounding small pools, fish would become trapped as the tide began to ebb. The beaches of Ballina are magnificent surfing beaches. Lighthouse Beach and Shelley Beach are easily accessed. Entry to South Ballina beach is accessed via the car ferry and offers outstanding surfing and beach fishing. Ballina’s etymology is not entirely certain. One view holds that it is a corruption of a clan name for the Bullina band of the Arakwal. It has been argued that in this tribe’s Bundjalung language, bullinah meant “place of many oysters”. This theory argues that the Aboriginal name reminded the predominantly Irish settlers of “Ballina”, so the name’s origin could be an accident.

A DAY IN BALLINA

PLAY - REFURBISHED BALLINA POOL & WATERSLIDE - Ballina Swimming Pool & Water Slide is located in the Ballina CBD next to the Richmond River. The pools can be used for swimming lessons, children’s play, lap swimming and rehabilitation or just for fun.

BALLINA’S BIG PRAWN

Ballina is home to the world’s largest prawn (made of concrete and fibreglass). On 24 September 2009, Ballina Shire Council voted to allow the demolition of the Big Prawn, but this permission was never acted upon. Bunnings Warehouse purchased the site and refurbished the Prawn as part of the redevelopment. The Prawn now sits on a stand next to the entrance of the Bunnings warehouse car park. Ballina’s Big Prawn is another of Australia’s iconic big things. Built in 1989, the Big Prawn has undergone a makeover and was reopened in July 2013. It now has a tail!

Lismore is nestled on the banks of the Wilsons River between the rainforest and the sea. The population in the Lismore urban centre in 2023 is 30,028. The city of Lismore lies in the Bundjalung people’s nation area. It has been suggested that the Aboriginal people called the area Tuckurimbah meaning “glutton.” Resurrection from the Devastating 2022 Floods - Lismore has long been the commercial hub of the Northern Rivers area, and is often referred to as the heart of the region. Since the recent devastating floods in March 2022, Lismore has struggled to come back to life, but the sheer gumption of the locals including business owners, the Lismore Council and all levels of Government are determined to rebuild Lismore with focus on preventing this sort of disaster ever happening in the future.

One local business rebuilding is Norco with hundred-year-old dairy farmers providing milk and produce from their rich green pastures. Surrounding Lismore is unparallel breath taking rainforests, water falls, walking tracks, and country drives through villages like Bexhill, Clunes, Goolmangar, Corndale, Federal and the Macadamia Nut capital of Australia, Dunoon. Explore Lismore’s heritage buildings, arcades, and unique shopping experiences, including colourful weekly markets. Check out the funky cafes, bars, and restaurants where you will savour the tastes of the Northern Rivers. The laidback lifestyle, idyllic climate, and spectacular natural beauty of the region, attract and inspire many creative souls. Do not miss a visit to one of many studios and galleries including the Lismore Regional Gallery

A DAY IN LISMORE

EXPLORE - MINYON FALLS is a plunge waterfall on the Repentance Creek which descends more than 100 metres over the huge rhyolite cliffs which were once part of the Tweed Volcano. The water flow eroded the underlying basalt away, to create the waterfall. The National Parks and Wildlife Service manages the Nightcap National Park, and provides a 50m boardwalk to the lookout which is wheelchair accessible, several picnic tables and barbecue facilities at the top of the falls. In the Minyon Falls area, a camping ground is provided 2 kilometres west at Rummery Park.

NIMBIN is notable for the prominence of its environmental initiatives such as permaculture, sustainability, and self-sufficiency, as well as the cannabis counterculture. This internationally famous village is vibrant and colourful with its unique streetscape of indigenous, rainforest and waterfall murals. Drive through the lush, green hills of the hinterland, and discover macadamia, fruit and coffee plantations, pristine waterfalls in majestic rainforests, friendly country pubs, cafes, and postcard-perfect villages.
