OUR STORY

By Jennifer McCallum, Founder of the Parent Coach Club

THE ROAD HAS BEEN WINDING AND SOME DAYS WE COULDN'T EVEN FIND THE PATH...UNTIL I DISCOVERED PARENT COACHES. I guess you could say I was a typical first-time mom. I wanted to do it all perfectly and never mess up. I wanted to show the world that I could do it all and do it well.

And then my first child was born. That was almost 23 years ago. Bringing home our baby was terrifying. I was lost. I was tired. I was frustrated. I needed help but I didn't know where to go to get it. I had trouble with everything - breastfeeding, dealing with the lack of sleep, maintaining my relationships and having enough confidence to know what I was doing was right...the whole gambit! At the time, I was sent home from the hospital with bags and bags of pamphlets and fliers. I was expected to sift through and find the resources I needed. Well, this tired mom couldn't find them at all..there were so many pamphlets to go through and each time I would call a listed organization, they would send me to another one. It was like a wild goose chase just to get a straight answer. There was no Google to go to when I needed help with one specific thing like breastfeeding, first foods for baby, diapering, and daycare.

We ended up back in the hospital with our new baby a few days after the birth. It was a traumatic experience for all of us and thanks to the fabulous nurses, we were able to make it through and leave a few days later with a healthy baby. Fast forward a few months later when I found it difficult to find information about things like: cloth diapering, organic food, community playgroups, and daycare options. I felt like it was a full-time job to research all the choices I had to make as a parent, and in the process was saddened by the time I was missing out on just enjoying my new baby.

There had to be a better way...and I knew I wasn't alone. If I was going through this, there must be other parents out there who had the same trouble finding information.

How could I help other parents? Maybe a pamphlet would help...one that listed all the community resources – something like the phone book (remember them?) but just for parents??? I called the maternal newborn care units at the local hospitals and asked them if they would hand out a pamphlet of resources if I put it together. Without question, they agreed. That pamphlet ended up being a 100-page book! That first year, with a toddler and 5 month-old baby, we delivered our first edition of the books to the hospitals as promised. For 18 years, I printed parenting resource books that went to every new parent after their baby was born. 16 of those years I also printed a School-Age edition for parents of kids starting school. I expanded to new cities and before I knew it, we had printed 59 editions! What a ride.

I spent the next two years researching in a fog of worry, stress, confusion, and the ever-present overwhelm. I tried to go back to work and wondered if I would ever find any work as rewarding as raising my baby. It seemed like life had gone on for everyone else and I was still trying to figure out this new mom gig...and failing. And then, one day, it became clear what I needed to do. I needed to help other new parents so they didn't have to go through what I did.

"THERE HAD TO BE A BETTER WAY...I KNEW I WASN'T ALONE." WWW.PARENTCOACH.CLUB ⎟07

IT SEEMED LIKE LIFE HAD GONE ON FOR EVERYONE ELSE AND I WAS STILL TRYING TO FIGURE OUT THIS NEW MOM GIG...AND FAILING. JENNIFER MCCALLUM

And, then my kids grew up and became teens. It was yet another stage I wasn't prepared for. When my first baby was born, I created resource books...when the first two kids entered school, I created a school-age book...but teens...this was a whole new area to navigate...and I wasn't ready! I felt like I was always the last one to the party...the party of understanding teens. I struggled with the everyday things that teens go through, not willing to give up control, and adding a lot of stress, shame, and guilt, onto both my teens and myself. In the midst of this, we also adopted twins. I knew I needed to be better than I was. I knew that if I just had the key to the answers, I would be the best mom ever. I had four kids counting on me now.

That is when I discovered Parent Coaches. They changed my life. I began working with them and my relationship with my kids became better. I also felt better about myself and that forward positive motion really does create more peace at home. They gave me tools and strategies to use to build our relationship. In fact, one small idea created the biggest impact....and I got this in a 30-minute chat with a Parent Coach!

Read our full story & lessons learned

At the same time, I was also pivoting my business and wondering what I could do next to continue to help parents, without printing thousands of books each year. Google was a much better, environmentally friendly way to find resources now. The answer was right in front of me. Parent Coaches! I could help Parent Coaches grow their business so they could help more parents, like me. But, there was a problem - not many parents had even heard of what a Parent Coach could do for their family.

I set out with one main mission: Create awareness of Parent Coaches so that families could find the joy and peace that we were experiencing. Now, this is a very short overview of how we got here. It was not easy and some days I even wondered if I was cut out to be a mom. There is a link below if you want to read more, but I want to leave you with one thing to consider.... What do you want your relationship to be like when your kids are adults? I wanted mine to be better, and thanks to Parent Coaches, this is exactly what I got. My kids are now 22, 20, 15, and 15. I may be a bit biased, but I think they are the best kids in the world and I am grateful that I worked with Parent Coaches so I could be the mom they needed me to be. It's a work in process, but I am getting there! XOXO Jennifer

How-To "Defend" Your Parenting Style to the Ones You Love By: Ashley Ladouceur, G.R.E.A.T. Parenting

Do you ever feel yourself defending your parenting style to the ones you love? Having to explain all of your choices and the reasons behind them? Creating boundaries with the ones we love may be one of the toughest parts of being an adult. Holding your beliefs above everyone else's is never easy but becomes even more complicated when we fear insulting the ones who raised us. We often hear the defense "Our generation was raised this way and we turned out alright.", but to you maybe "alright" isn't good enough. Our world has completely changed in the last 10 years so it is unreasonable to think that we could raise our children the same way we were raised. That world simply does not exist anymore.

It is understanding that our families may become offended by our polar opposite parenting style, feeling like we see them as somehow less than, but in reality it is not that personal.

Think about this quote from Maya Angelou "Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better do better." Our parents did the best they could with what they knew. Now we must continue that gift and give our children the best we can with what we have learned. We are raising children in an online world and that alone comes with all new challenges and boundaries. On top of that, we have new research in social/emotional development and what that looks like for children as well as how to build those skills. If we now have all the tools to give our children the best start possible, don't we owe it to them to "do better"? WWW.PARENTCOACH.CLUB ⎟11

So how do we communicate and "defend" our new parenting style in a way that seems less offensive and personal to our loved ones? 1. Simply put, you explain that you are making parenting choices that you feel are the best for your children, using a combination of what you have learned and your intuition as their parent. Boundaries can be extremely tough to hold, but they become much more difficult when you are holding boundaries of those around you instead of boundaries that align with who you are as the parent.

2. If you feel that the above option will still spark further questioning and opinions, you can try something close to "Thank you for being concerned about my child, I know you truly love them and want what is best for them. I will take what you have said into consideration." and of course, in the end, you will make the decision YOU feel is best that aligns with YOUR boundaries. I help committed parents of children age 1 to 10 move from questioning their parenting to being the confident parent they are meant to be. I do this through 1:1 Coaching Sessions and a G.R.E.A.T. Parenting Membership. You got this! xx

MORNING ROUTINES BY LESLIE JOSEL - ADHD ACADEMIC COACH

Question: How Can We Streamline Our Morning Routine with an Eye to Fall? Q: “I’m worried about the Fall, when we my girls will go back to in-person school and need to be on a morning schedule. They will never get out the door on time! My younger daughter gets caught up in the mornings, always going back to her room for her socks or shoes or something else. I’m looking for help to get our morning routine down so we’re not in crisis when school starts up again.” – MorningMom

Answer: Hi MorningMom: A. Brava to you for focusing on the morning routine now, while you have the luxury of time. And that is the key. Mornings are always stressful because, unfortunately, they come with a deadline. So best to solidify those routines when you’re not feeling the pressure of a clock ticking down. My rule of thumb about mornings is this: Anything you can do the night before should be done! Since I don’t know your current morning routine, I’m going to offer a few general suggestions to help create a smooth morning by preparing the night before.

WWW.PARENTCOACH.CLUB ⎟25

How to Prepare: Layout clothes and toiletries for the next day — including everything from accessories (like the shoes and socks for which your daughter returns to her room) to undergarments to toothbrushes. But here is the key: Take tomorrow’s outfit out of the bedroom and leave it either in the kitchen or in the bathroom closest to your kitchen. By removing the clothing from the bedroom, you’re also removing the temptation for your daughter to make time-wasting trips back there. This goes for the toiletries as well. Set up a toothbrush and washing station either in the kitchen or in the bathroom nearest to the door you use to leave your home. And a tip within a tip. To minimize your daughters’ footprints in the morning, keep everything they need in one small space. In other words, once she leaves one room, she should not need to go back to it. Get breakfast ready. Most of us know to make lunch the night before to save time in the morning, but preparing breakfast is a time robber, too. Set out dishes and utensils. Lay out vitamins or other medications. Premeasure cereal. Cut up fruit. You will shave minutes off the morning if you have everything set out and ready to go the evening before.

Set up a launching pad. This is where the magic happens! My children are flown and grown, and I still use a launching pad to help me on busy mornings. This is a designated place in your home to keep the belongings that go back and forth to school every day. It removes the morning stress of “I can’t find my binder” or “Where is my clarinet?” Pick a heavily trafficked location; it could be your front door, the mudroom, or even outside your daughters’ bedrooms. Backpacks with completed homework, library books, gym clothes, and musical instruments should all be stored here. Make a reminder checklist. List items such as keys, lunches, homework, sports equipment, and musical instruments that you know your daughters need to take to school. (Pictures work perfectly for younger children.) Tack the list to a corkboard or clipboard and hang it right by the launching pad for them to see. Practice. Practice. Practice. I would suggest practicing the routine now. Parents always ask me if they should practice during the summer when school is not in session. I feel it is difficult to get that same momentum going when school is out for the summer, but you can use this spring to work out some kinks while the pressure is less. Preparing for the morning the evening before allows children to make decisions without feeling overwhelmed or pressured. For a 10- and 13-year-old, that’s a wonderful way to promote self-sufficiency and problem-solving skills.

Ready to Homeschool? By Leslie Josel - ADHD Academic Coach

LEARNING HOW TO HOMESCHOOL IS COMPLEX YET REWARDING. FOR PARENTS WITH ADHD, ORGANIZATION MAY BE THE BIGGEST INITIAL HURDLE. USE THESE STRATEGIES TO ORGANIZE YOUR HOME CLASSROOM WITH INTENTION.

Q: I Need Homeschool Organization Advice for a Mom with ADHD! “We’ve decided to homeschool our two children (10 and 13) for the new school year and I want to try to get a jump on setting up our classroom. I’m not very organized (I’m the one with ADHD!) and don’t know where to start. I have one room set aside for homeschooling but want to also use other rooms for projects or science experiments. I have bins for storing supplies and materials but that’s it for now. Thanks!” — ADHDHomeSchoolMom

Hi ADHDHomeSchoolMom: For homeschooling families, getting ready for back-to-school goes WAY beyond a trip to the local office store for brand new notebooks and binders. Curriculum materials need to be sorted and grouped. Spaces need to be optimized and organized. Books and resources all need accessible homes so as not to cause clutter. It truly can be overwhelming not knowing where to begin. I have ideas to help organize your homeschooling space so you can start the new school year off on track.

Create a Central Command Station Earmark one area in your designated homeschooling room where you will store the bulk of your homeschooling supplies — items you are going to access daily. (Surplus storage or infrequent items can be regulated to a closet or another room in your house.) Open and accessible shelves, such as bookcases or cubbies are a natural and easy choice — and not just for textbooks or reading materials. They can be customized in multiple ways to suit your teaching and family’s needs.

Here are some tips to maximize their efficiency. Store the supplies that you use on a regular basis in open bins or containers. “Open” being the key here. You want to streamline the process of retrieving materials as well as putting them back. Just easily remove a bin from the shelf, grab the necessary supplies, and quickly put the bin back — no clutter, and no guesswork as to what’s inside! Added plus? Small hands can easily maintain this system. And a tip within a tip. There are endless ways to organize with bins. My favorite? Sort your curriculum by units in open bins that hold all the books, kits, resource materials, games, and tools needed for that subject.

WWW.PARENTCOACH.CLUB ⎟31

If you have deep shelves, use organizers with drawers that stack on top of each other. I like these because there’s no need to unstack containers to get to the ones on the bottom. A win during a busy school day.

Labels are YOUR best friend… and your child’s! Make sure to label each container clearly. This will act as a visual reminder of what’s inside and also help you know where things go when you’re tired after a long school day.

Magazine files work really well on an open bookcase. Use clear transparent ones as a catch-all for papers, workbooks, forms, or important information you need to keep at your fingertips. Don’t forget to label!

If you’re worried you might have trouble keeping track of assignments or supplies, consider organizing by color. Color-coding simplifies the process of finding items according to subject. Use one color scheme for every notebook, index card, binder, sticky note, folder, etc. related to a specific subject. You can even follow the color scheme you’re using for your storage bins.

Keep the items you use most regularly in your prime real estate. This means the space between your shoulders and knees. If you have to reach up or move several items out of the way to access supplies all day long, that will take precious time out of your day and make maintaining your systems difficult and time consuming.

TIGHT ON SPACE? If you’re homeschooling in a small space, I recommend literally thinking out-of-the-box by bringing your walls and closets into action. If you have ample wall space, hang bulletin or pegboards. They come in fun colors and provide space for notes, lesson plans, charts, schedules, or other visual teaching aids. Or use your wall space to create a message center. Use magnetic, cork, and dry-erase boards or clipboards to hold papers you need to quickly access, keep to-do lists insight, and make the daily schedule easily visible to all. Have ample hanging space in a nearby closet? Hang clear shoe storage bags in the closet and tuck supplies and materials in the individual pockets. Store cords and wires for your electronics or math manipulatives for games. The list and uses are endless! Hang door-mounted racks on the inside of closets or cabinet doors to maximize storage space. This is a great technique for freeing up counter space and making your supplies as visible as possible. You mentioned you would like to use other rooms in your home for projects and experiments. The empty area under your stairwell can be turned into a reading nook with cozy seating and bins for books, or a science “lab” housing a small table and slim shelving. Purchase a rolling cart with ample storage space to house items you’ll need.

A system is only as good as its maintenance. So if you use any of these systems, you’ll need to clean them out regularly to prevent them from becoming unwieldy. A good rule of thumb is to empty them after a unit or project is completed. Here’s to a successful and organized new school year!

Topics include college affordability, college admissions options, career training, identifying the right majors for teens, building the college list, college essay writing strategies, and so much more!

What can I expect? Let’s schedule a 30-minute call to talk about your needs and your starting point! We will determine which service plan is best for you which can include our: comprehensive workbook with action plans, templates, and agenda samples, online podcast training program if you are always on the go, 10-session online parent course, and/or one-to-one coaching

How can you help?

Helping teens plan their paths after high school can create tension and conflict in the home mostly because families are waiting too late to begin, or there isn’t enough information on what the options are, what requirements fulfill each option, and how to engage with teens to ignite their motivation to be active in making a plan. As an expert in the field of college admissions for 20 years, I will provide training and coaching that places teens at the center of planning. Parents and teens will no longer have to face this educational journey with uncertainty, worry, and confusion!

What other parents say about me “Sonja gave me the communication tools to allow me to take charge of the college process. I was familiar with the college application process, however was clueless on how to have impactful and meaningful conversations with my teen. My daughter and I are so much more closer! Thank you so much!” “I have been working with College Confidence for years and I truly will not work with anyone else. Sonja's experience is unmatched. She is professional and an expert in college admissions. She will not only advocate for your child, but will be a critical pillar in your family's journey. She's that good!” “Thank you again for your wonderful presentation/talk for our group. I feel we all (parents and students) learned quite a bit from you that night. My daughter and I both agreed the way you presented the college process, was with a lot of positive influence and enthusiasm. You made it sound challenging about writing ‘your story’ but in a way that made the girls feel special and that it is ok to like yourself and tell college why they would benefit from the you as the applicant. To go for it!”

Linda is my absolute go-to person when I need support, clarity and direction. She has helped me find my way through many moments I have felt lost. Linda has also helped my teen-age daughter through many typical teen-age struggles. My daughter is a much happier person after her sessions with Linda. She works with Linda on a regular basis now and is doing amazing!! Thank you Linda for the work you do. My family is very grateful to have you on our side. Jennifer Funnell (Ontario, Canada) Linda is a gifted healer - she intuitively gets to the source of my obstacles and answers questions I didn't even know how to ask. I know that I can get on a call with her and I can trust that I'll feel better in just 60 minutes. She's helped guide me ….to follow my intuition and trust how to be in the flow. Before our session today, I felt untethered, lost in space, disconnected from my body - anxious, fearful, and overwhelmed - and definitely not creative! After our session I felt re-inspired, like a weight was lifted off my shoulders - and I felt connected to myself again. I highly recommend you go to Linda when you need help that you can't always put words to - she'll figure it out! -Jen Pillow (British Columbia, Canada) Working with Linda is a great experience overall. Coming in to sessions and working with Linda helped me clear my mind and really think rationally after. As well it calms and relaxes your mind and body during sessions. Working with Linda really helped me think about different aspects of situations, and working on finding out more about myself. After leaving I felt very positive and clear minded always looking forward to the next session. Nicholas ~ 18 years old (Ontario, Canada)

DIY RAINBOW UNICORN SLIME By: LittlePassports.com

58⎟ WWW.PARENTGUIDE.CA

SUPPLIES 1/2 cup clear glue 1/2 cup lukewarm water 1/2 cup liquid starch 3 different colored glitters (we used pastels)

INSTRUCTIONS 1) Mix the clear glue, water, and liquid starch together. When it’s formed a slime consistency (which should be immediately), divide slime into 3 sections. 2) Stir in one color of glitter into each section. 3) Take your first coloured slime and stretch it so that it is about a foot long. Repeat with the other colours. 4) Join the threads of slime together, twisting slightly so that you have a rainbow braid of slime. Squish and mix to your heart’s content!

What’s the science behind slime? When you combine glue and sodium borate (which is found in liquid starch), something called crosslinking happens and turns the mixture into more of a solid than a liquid. Glue is made up of polymers (you can think of polymers like rubbery spaghetti noodles that slide past each other), and sodium borate is made up of negative ions (which help things stick together). When you add the sodium borate to the glue, the sticky ions help the rubbery noodles come together, and everything stiffens up. As a result, you get this fun textured slime!

Here are a few discussion questions you can ask the kids to think about: How is glue different from water? Why do you think we use glue to make slime, rather than water? What are other substances similar to the slime you just made? What would happen if you throw your slime against a wall? (Optional, of course.) WWW.PARENTCOACH.CLUB ⎟53

PANDEMIC-RELATED "LEARNING LOSS" By: Kate Garzon, Guided Parenting Support--GPS, LLC

"Learning Loss" is a term that's been tossed around quite a bit since the pandemic began, and it's a scary one for parents who want their children to have the best education possible (which is EVERY parent, btw). With school starting up again, many families are thinking about how to make up for the academics that they feel were missed since lockdowns began in Spring 2020.

Before you book a series of tutors, and plan an elaborate and color-coded agenda loaded with enrichment opportunities, perhaps take a moment to consider a couple of things.

First, the entire world is slowly emerging from something that's been really, really hard on EVERYONE for a variety of reasons. We KNOW that stressed brains cannot absorb, process, and retain new information particularly well, so bringing our children out of one stressful situation (global pandemic) and into another intense enrichment activities designed to "catch them up" on academics) isn't the best way to prepare them for school to start again. Take a deep breath, accept that this has been a really hard year, and try to get your own anxiety under control by looking at the big picture. When your child is 25, will it matter that they don't remember anything from their 4th grade math class? Or that 10th grade science is a blur? I promise you, it won't. What WILL matter is that they have resilience, emotional selfregulation, strong family relationships and friendships, and the knowledge and confidence to survive and thrive through whatever other hard things will come their way (because we know that this pandemic isn't the last hard thing that they'll experience, as much as we want to shield and protect them from it all).

WWW.PARENTCOACH.CLUB ⎟57

TAKE A DEEP BREATH, ACCEPT THAT THIS HAS BEEN A REALLY HARD YEAR, AND TRY TO GET YOUR OWN ANXIETY UNDER CONTROL BY LOOKING AT THE BIG PICTURE. KATE GARZON

Second--now that you've taken a breath and are feeling ready--talk with your children and teens about how THEY'RE feeling. Ask them what they're looking forward to about going back to in-person school full-time, and ask them if there's anything that makes them nervous. Depending on your child's age and communication level, you may get "Fine." and "Nothing." as your responses, but don't give up! These are rarely "one-and-done" conversations, and by asking them "How" and "What" questions ("How do you feel about your progress from this year?" "What's the one thing that you'd like to be better prepared for come September?") you can get more information about what THEY perceive as the gaps in their learning. Because if THEY don't see it as a problem, then a parent-imposed solution won't be effective or long-lasting--and it may waste your money, everyone's time, and damage your relationship with your kids over the long term. Give them the space to come back to you once they've thought it over, by assuring them that you'll be ready to listen whenever they're ready to talk, and that you want to problemsolve WITH them (not FOR them) so that they get the support they need.

Third, focus on ONE goal to work towards. They might share that they're worried about being behind in math class, or that they're scared about seeing their classmates again in person because the social stuff was never easy for them. Once the goal has been clearly defined, brainstorm possible solutions and collaborate on a plan. Autonomy and choice were two things that took a major hit during the pandemic, and we know that humans are more cooperative, flexible, and invested in solutions when they're actively involved in creating the plan. It might involve hiring a tutor, taking an online class, working with a social skills group, or simply creating some opportunities to increase their reading and writing--but the key here is that the problem AND the solution were identified by the child or teen, with your support and guidance. Finally, give yourselves and your children permission to just relax and enjoy the relative freedoms that come with increased vaccination numbers and beautiful weather.

IS YOUR PARTNER AND/OR

YOUR KIDS FRUSTRATING YOU???? I CAN HELP!

by Aparna Venkataraman, Beauty in Parenting

Ever wondered how (and when) to draw a line in the sand (or sandbox)? Those closest to us can be our real “teachers” in life of how we want to be heard, respected and loved!

I find, as a parent coach, that so much miscommunication happens when expectations are not voiced ahead of time and boundaries are not set between parent and child or partners - and it’s a skill to learn how to do this so it becomes natural!

3 Ways to Help Your Perspective on a Frustrating Child or Partner

“...so much miscommunication happens when expectations are not voiced ahead of time...”

Here are 3 tips I love to share, roleplay and see successful shifts in with clients - if you’re curious to book a session or package, you can view them here and read other testimonials! TIP 1:

TIP 2:

NOTICE HOW YOU ARE COMMUNICATING BOTH VERBALLY AND NON-VERBALLY WITH YOUR CHILD/PARTNER

PRACTICE DAILY OR WEEKLY CHECK-INS TO HELP BUILD TRUST, CONNECTION, AND EVEN EYE CONTACT TIME

-Remember: it’s easy for others to pick up on our moods, emotions, annoyances, etc. when our hearts and minds are closed off - setting the intention in your mind that “what I’m about to say is coming from love, clarity and place of what is best for me/us”, helps the other person to be more receptive to you Blame, shame and putting others down only create more of a power struggle instead of a real, genuine connection - we’re all doing the best that we can and know how to in each moment!

-Practicing regular connection makes it less likely for surprise frustrations to come up —- and the more we have eye contact with our loved ones (and, yes, sometimes there are times when children have trouble making eye contact - I share in sessions how to use discernment and awareness) - the greater level of trust we build (even across a room or on a video chat)!

WWW.PARENTCOACH.CLUB ⎟63

TIP 3: PRACTICE LOVING YOURSELF Loving yourself makes you stronger. Period. The more you allow yourself to relax, get better sleep (poor sleep creates overthinking and more frustration/lashing out) and say kind and compassionate things to yourself, the more you’ll be good with: Setting a boundary and not always pleasing others first Saying “No” or “No thank you” Intuitively doing what is best for you or helping your child/partner to do what is best for them because you’re in a place of more calm Making decisions that come from not a need (“I have to or should”) - anything that feels forced instead of heartcentered is because of stress or expectations outside of ourselves!

Thoughts like: “My child is bothering me and is x, y and z because she is rude or spoiled” and “He/She never listens to my needs and I feel like I have to do everything around here!” means that you simply have to put more routines, weekly checkin times with others and yourself in place - because when you listen to your own needs first, that’s where you will be able to have smoother days and let things go!

Loving yourself makes you stronger.

“...when you listen to your own needs first, that’s where you will be able to have smoother days and let things go!”

TRIGGERS when raising teens

It’s a beautiful Saturday in August and the sun is streaming in through the family room windows as Amy tromps down the stairs with her arms full of dirty sheets. She heads to the laundry room through the kitchen to begin the wash and then move on to start the vacuum. As she passes the island, she notes her 15-year-old twins, Tracy and Troy, sitting on their phones while they eat a leisurely breakfast. Amy can’t help but shake her head at the fact that they are just beginning their day and it’s well into the early afternoon.

By: Kim Muench, Founder at Real Life Parent Guide

Having started the laundry, Amy walks back into the kitchen and sees someone has left the milk and cereal on the counter, the kids have both magically disappeared. “Damn It!” she thinks as she immediately stomps to the base of the staircase and yells at the top of her lungs, “Tracy! Troy! Get down here right now!”

So, what can a triggered parent do to constructively get their point across, and work toward being less triggered in the first place? Let’s explore this common occurrence in the life of raising teens. Triggers.

After two more attempts, she’s had it. Amy bolts up the stairs and bangs on both kid’s bedroom doors sending them quickly into the hallway. “What the hell?!” She begins, her body is pulsing because she’s so sick and tired of asking them ten times a day to do even the simplest of tasks, “Who left the milk and cereal out?!” Of course, the kids look at one another and proceed to blame each other. Amy’s reaction? “If I’ve told you once, I’ve told you a hundred stink’n times, when you’re done eating, put the food away! I work my butt off to provide food and clothes and a warm house and the two of you can do nothing but stare at those stupid phones! I’m so sick of getting no help around here!” Tracy and Troy roll their eyes and tell their mom they’re sorry and they’ll do better next time. Amy’s not buying it, but she also knows the way she’s been handling their continued “forgetfulness” is to yell at them, and clearly, that isn’t working. WWW.PARENTCOACH.CLUB ⎟69

The top six things that set a parent off into anger / frustration / disappointment include: whining, not listening, disrespectful behavior, hearing the words “I hate you!”, physical abuse, and sibling fights. Parents become triggered by the above-listed behaviors for many reasons. These range from (in Amy’s case) being tired of having to say the same things over and over again to becoming just plain tired and overwhelmed by the responsibilities associated with parenting and/or balancing that job with work and their own personal stress. However, beneath the surface in-themoment feelings is another level and it is this level I coach parents through to help them learn to parent with their teenager rather than over them, diminishing their triggers and creating a more peaceful environment at home and stronger connections with their kids.

Triggers show up on both a physical and emotional plane. Some of the physical symptoms may include clenched teeth, a prickly feeling up the back of the neck, racing heart, flushed cheeks, stomach cramps, sweating palms. The physical reaction is immediately followed by one or more of these emotions: anger, frustration, disappointment, and sometimes feeling overwhelmed. The deeper level I am talking about coaching parents on is where we uncover the limiting beliefs taken on in their childhoods, the ones we may or may not consciously be aware of. The ones being driven by their teen’s behavior.

For example, many parents I work with feel disrespected by their teenagers when they don’t listen to them and do as their told. It often infuriates the parent. But, once we begin to talk it through, what’s really going on below the surface is that the parent feels unworthy of being heard. And, while growing up they can point to many instances in their childhood where they were trying to communicate something to their mom or dad and it was ignored or the feelings minimized. So, the limiting belief of I’m not worth listening to is triggered every time their teen ignores them. The teen is just being a teen, most times they aren’t being malicious. The parent is having a deeper reaction and projecting it onto their child. This cycle of being triggered by our children’s behaviors is what creates a generational pattern. Was your mom a yeller and now you find yourself doing the same thing? Do you have any idea how to stop the pattern? It takes being educated on the topic and practice yet it’s possible to shift the pattern so your teen won’t grow up to be yelling at your grandkids. You can choose to do the work and create the change you wish to see in your home and family life!

PARENT & TEEN GUIDE

What do you do? I specialize in helping parents of kids ages 10-25 enjoy peaceful homes and relationships within their family. I do this with compassion and without judgment. This work is not about quick strategies, it's about working with the parent to create lasting, generational change in the family environment.

What issues do you deal with?

I have personally experienced and worked with teen pregnancy, adolescent addiction, anxiety, and depression.

How can you help? Together we work to identify the limiting beliefs your child's behavior is triggering inside of you and work through them to discover new beliefs that will better serve the parent/child relationship you are in. We work on parenting with rather than over your child.

What other parents say about Kim "Thank you for caring so much about my comfort on this journey...you pushed enough buttons to get stuff out and done, but not enough to cause dread. I am a better parent for having worked with you." ~Carmen, mom of two "You helped me understand my kids aren't acting and saying things just to hurt me, it is there way of showing me they are growing up and making decisions for themselves. I don't take their statements as personally anymore, I know that this is how teenagers express there need for a feeling of independence." Deb, mom of twin teen boys and college-age girl "Best investment I ever made for our family!" Jennifer, mom of four teens "Thank you for caring so much about my comfort on this journey...you pushed buttons just enough to get stuff out and done but not enough to create dread." Carmen, mom of two "You heard and understood where sometimes I don't feel my wife gets where I'm coming from. Just hearing myself talk out loud and you're asking me the right questions brought me so much peace of mind. Thank you, Kim, for doing this work!" David, stepdad of three

We are here for you! We are heading into the 6th month of the pandemic and it may not be over for some time yet. If you are wondering how to navigate life right now, please know that we are here for you. Our community of qualified Parent Coaches are ready to support you and walk with you through this challenging time. Reach out to them for a free 30-minute confidential call here!

Some Ideas to support your family during the pandemic... 1. Hold Family Meetings weekly to stay connected and talk about what you like and what you don't like about your time together during the pandemic. 2. Create a contract to include items you want to keep as you move out of isolation. Have everyone from the family sign it. Once the world opens up fully again you may forget the things that you liked; writing it down will help keep you on track. 3. Be careful. Encourage your kids to continue to wash their hands frequently for at least 20 seconds. Notice how often they are touching their face and help them recognize when they are doing this. 4. Be kind. Not everyone will be ready to integrate into 'normal' activities. Never judge or shame someone that is not ready to interact and participate in daily life activities like they did before the pandemic. 5. Stay in touch with your older kids that will be heading back to college or university. These are unprecedented times and they will be doing their best to 'get back to normal' but may need your support to navigate their emotions. 6. Think about how you were not prepared for this pandemic and make a decision to be prepared if it happens again. Pandemic-proof your work, stay healthy, and create a savings account and put money away each month for emergencies such as this.

How can you help? Many of us didn’t grow up with a model of what conscious parenting looks like. I help the Mom’s I work with to release the mom guilt, parent with confidence and have a better a relationship with their kids by mastering behaviour management, communication skills and mindset.

What can I expect? I offer a free 30-minute call to map out your needs and see if we are a good fit. If we go forward you can expect weekly zoom calls and ongoing email support. I offer both four weeks and eight weeks 1:1 coaching packages.

PARENT COACH

What do you do? I empower parents dealing with youth struggling with mental health and addiction issues to focus on the present situation.

What issues do you deal with? I deal with parent's feelings of guilt, shame, anger, anxiety, other relationships that get affected by the stress; and overall mental health of the parent.

How can you help? I offer training I have learned over a period of 6 years in a 6 week program to empower parents in dealing with the areas within themselves that they can control to keep them in a healthy mindset - allows parents to be the role model their child needs and wants and allows the parent to deal with longer term issues one step at a time.

What can I expect? I use Zoom video to connect with you face to face in a confidential space - you can come alone or with your partner. This call is not time sensitive and we will get to talk about your situation, we will focus on the outcome you desire and I will share with you the 6 week program outline and the outcome you can achieve. I also offer a three week intensive course if that applies to your situation.

What other parents say about me: "She helped me tap into my strength and courage and reminded me who I truly am. I felt empowered and stronger after our session. I loved the questions she asked me and enjoyed finding the answers to those questions." Natalia S.
