TRADE SHOW TIME! It’s annual trade show time again, with over a dozen companies exhibiting for either two or three days during the Tuesday 23rd to Thursday 25th August period, and at least three companies choosing to hold their events on various dates in September. As last year, the main emphasis is on white goods and small domestic appliances and, as always, this issue of ier-Retail presents a detailed preview of the many new products that will be on show, along with each brand’s show dates, times and contacts (see page 16). Also in this issue, we interview Ciaran O’Reilly, Expert Ireland (page 12), Johnny Dunne, White Goods Association (page 13), and Paul O’Connor, Electrolux Group Ireland (page15).

Philips CE Moves to Exertis, Philips SDA Stays with Allegro Gibson Innovations, which acquired the Philips CE range in 2014, has announced that the Irish distribution will be moved from Allegro to Exertis from Monday 31st October 2016. The Philips SDA range, including personal care product and vacuum cleaners, will continue to be distributed in Ireland by Allegro. Mike Shiel, Country Manager, Ireland, Gibson Innovations, has written to retailers advising them that: “As part of a wider company strategy, Gibson Innovations now wish to bring the CE portfolio forward with a new distributor in Ireland; and, after careful consideration, we have chosen Exertis to be our new partner. We will be working on implementing this in the coming months with a view of formally launching on Monday 31st October 2016. “I want to clarify a few points that may be of concern to you. First, this only applies to the Audio, Video, Headphones, DECT Phones and Accessories portfolio. “Second, we intend to continue the terms and conditions we have in place with Allegro to Exertis, to ensure that our decision to move distributor will not have any negative business impact for you. “Third, our consumer care and returns policy remains identical to the current way of working. “We are committed to making the handover as smooth as possible and will work closely with both parties to ensure no disruption to supply. However, I would urge that you continue to order as you normally would from Allegro in the months of August, September and October. “Further communication will follow with extra detail around the new launch before October 31st. “I want to say a very big thank you to Allegro for all their support in the previous five years. The team have been highly professional in their approach at all times and always a real pleasure to deal with.”

Reactions to National Minimum Wage Recommendation Retail Excellence Ireland has welcomed the Low Pay Commission’s recommendation of a 10c increase to the national minimum wage to €9.25, while the IBEC group Retail Ireland has expressed disappointment, and the Mandate union has described the recommendation as “an insult”.

“It is encouraging that the Low Pay Commission has considered the submissions of all interested parties and taken an evidence-based approach to their determination,” said Lynn Drumgoole, REI Director of Communications. “The nature of the increase is a realistic move that we believe takes into account a soft first half to 2016 in many industries, including retail, as well as the ongoing threat of Brexit and overall competitiveness in the Irish market.”
Retail Ireland “Any further increase will only increase pressure on Irish retailers at a time of great uncertainty,” said Thomas Burke, Retail Ireland Director. “There is absolutely no economic basis for a further minimum wage increase, following the 6% increase earlier this year. Any additional rise will put further pressure on thousands of retail businesses that are already grappling with intense competitive pressures and a rising cost base. “The UK vote to leave the EU has led to a major sterling devaluation and raised the spectre of a return to cross-border shopping. To further increase input costs for Irish retailers at this time will reduce our ability to compete with shops north of the border. The minimum wage is already 6% higher than in the UK and this gap will widen if sterling falls further, as is predicted.”
Mandate Mandate, the retail and bar workers’ union, strongly condemned the recommendation, saying it is an insult to low-paid workers and the most vulnerable in our society. “No matter what way you look at this recommendation, it falls well short of what is needed to ensure that work pays and that poverty levels are tackled,” said John Douglas, Mandate General Secretary. “The Living Wage is currently set at €11.50 per hour. At this rate, it will take 23 years for a minimum wage worker to achieve a basic living standard - and that’s if the cost of living doesn’t go up one cent in that period of time.” He cited the following: Ireland has the highest proportion of low pay in the EU15. Almost 1 in 4 workers in the Irish economy are classified as low paid. Retail workers in Ireland would need an 18% pay increase to reach the average retail worker in the EU15. Of all of those at risk of poverty, 12% are at work.

Messi, Piqué and Turan Surprise School Children with ‘Chance to Play’ Children the world over dream of having a kick-about with their football heroes, so Beko made this dream possible for one group of school children from an underprivileged neighbourhood as FC Barcelona stars gave them the surprise of their lives. Lionel Messi, Gerard Piqué and Arda Turan surprised 10 children from a school in Barcelona and joined in with their training session as part of a special day out organised by Beko, Premium Partner of FC Barcelona. The children, who regularly take part in the FC Barcelona Foundation’s FutbolNet programme, were taken by bus to a surprise location, the FC Barcelona training ground, for a special coaching session. The biggest surprise came when the trio of international football stars walked in to take part in the session as part of Beko’s Official Partner of Play campaign. While the children were enjoying their dream day, Beko gave their school a makeover by transforming a previously unusable room with new paintwork, furniture, FC Barcelona and FC Barcelona Foundation wall vinyls and brand new Beko appliances to create a vibrant room for them to play and learn in. FutbolNet is a scheme for 10 to 16-year-olds run by the FC Barcelona Foundation, which works with schools and youth groups in Catalan areas to use football as a tool to promote values such as self-confidence, respect and a sense of responsibility. You can watch ‘Chance to Play’ at: https://youtu.be/fmnnLar1KIE

SME Business Confidence Slides Post Brexit The results of the ISME Quarterly Business Trends Survey for the second quarter of 2016 showed a reduction in business confidence from SME owners after the Brexit vote, with a drop in 10 of the 12 economic indicators tracked. While the results to the end of March showed a drop in sentiment, the indicators in the second quarter deteriorated even further, wiping out the gains to the end of 2015. The Brexit fallout has replaced economic uncertainty as the biggest concern for SME owners. The indicators for Business Confidence, Profitability and Current Employment dropped to single digit figures for the first time since spring 2013, and 60% of respondents expected that Brexit would have a negative effect on their bottom line, with 32% stating ‘no change’. Mark Fielding, ISME Chief Executive, said: “It is not surprising that the indicators are negative, based on a survey in the first week after the Brexit vote, with business expectations dropping by 35 points (minus 48 since Q4, 2015). The initial post Brexit shock, with the sterling drop in value, combined with the ongoing increasing business costs, continuing difficulties in accessing bank finance and late payments to reduce SME Business Confidence.” The survey was conducted in the first week of July, with 945 SME respondents, of whom 54% employ less than 10, 36% employ between 11 and 50, and 10% employ between 51 and 250. Geographically, 34% are from Dublin with 66% spread across the country, with 13% having multiple sites, giving a good reflection of the country as a whole, sectorally, geographically and by employee numbers.

AEG and Zanussi Washer Dryers Achieve ‘Which?’ Best Buy Status
Legal Advice on EAT Unfair Dismissal Decision A recent decision by the Employment Appeals Tribunal found that the dismissal of an employee for putting “derogatory” comments on Facebook about a colleague was unfair and awarded him €5,000, having determined that there were flaws in the employer’s policies and procedures. In its latest Irish Legal Update, solicitors Mason Hayes & Curran conclude: “What is clear from the above case is, although Irish law allows employers to take an employee’s use of social media into account when disciplining an employee, this right is secondary to the employee’s right to fair procedures. The employer must always ensure the punishment fits the crime.
AEG L75670NWD washer dryer
Finally, some practical top tips for employers:
The AEG L75670NWD and Zanussi ZWD71460NW washer dryers have been awarded ‘Which?’ Best Buy status. The AEG L75670NWD has a 7kg drum and effectively removes stains from clothes, even at 40 degrees. The ‘Which?’ verdict: “We love the way this AEG washes clothes and that’s why we’ve awarded it five gold stars for washing. Switch to drying and this AEG continues to deliver. It dries clothes accurately as the drying sensor that controls the programme duration automatically stops when the clothes are dry.” The Zanussi ZWD71460NW spins at 1,400rpm and can wash up to 7kg of clothes. The ‘Which?’ verdict: “You won’t feel let down by how this Zanussi goes about its business. As a washing machine, we struggled to find fault with this excellent, great value appliance.”
• It is absolutely vital that employers set some ground rules in relation to the use of social media. Therefore, ensure there is an appropriate “Electronic Communications and Social Media Acceptable Usage” policy and procedure in place. • Ensure there is a policy and procedure in place for dealing with bullying, harassment and sexual harassment to include where such issues arise in a virtual sense. • Where an employer is considering disciplining an employee for social media use, ensure there is a sufficient link between their activity and their employment.”

Sterling Fall Demands Urgent Policy Response, Says IBEC IBEC has demanded a decisive and immediate national response to the Brexit currency shock, which has left many key export businesses reeling, with jobs already under threat. The warning from the country’s main business organisation comes as a new survey highlights the intense currency strain on exporters following the UK vote. Business is moving quickly to manage severe competitive pressures, but an urgent, targeted national response is essential, says the organisation. The survey found that the negative exchange implications of the UK vote is by far the biggest concern of business. Almost half (45%) saw this as the main threat. Exporters are operating with a major competitive handicap in the UK market, while domestic firms are facing the prospect of cheaper UK imports grabbing market share. In a stark assessment, Fergal O’Brien, IBEC Director of Policy, said: “The Brexit strain is manifest and intense. Without urgent action to address competitive pressures, hundreds of millions of euro worth of exports and thousands of Irish jobs will be lost. “Individual businesses have been slow to talk publicly, but the feedback from members is clear and unambiguous. Businesses and jobs are already under threat. “This is now a full blown currency crisis. For exporters, the speed of sterling’s decline is on a par with the 1992 currency crisis. Irish exporters to the UK are already 15% less competitive and things could get much worse. The problem demands urgent government attention.”
Survey Results Key results from an IBEC survey of over 450 businesses on the impact of Brexit include: • The main concern is the sharp fall in the value of sterling; almost of all businesses (45%) saw this as the main threat • Exchange rate volatility, weaker investor confidence, and competitiveness against the UK are the top three challenges identified • Cheaper UK imports was cited as the biggest risk by one third of respondents (33%) • Only one in 10 (9%) of businesses have Brexit contingency plans already in place • Only one in four exporters (24%) have currency hedging
arrangements in place and, for many, this protection will expire over the coming weeks and months • A renewed focus on competitiveness was identified as the most important Government policy response required.
Saorview TV Campaign Promotes New App Saorview’s current TV advertising campaign, which highlights some of the great content that is available on Saorview, started in July and runs through to the end of September. The campaign includes ads for the new Saorview app and is being supported with social media activity on Twitter and Facebook. Saorview recently launched the new app for mobile devices that is available on iOS and Android. The Saorview app is designed as a companion to Saorview’s DTT service and allows Saorview viewers to plan their viewing on Ireland’s free digital television platform. The app features a seven-day programme guide, a new recommendations service called Spotlight, and links to on-demand players. Viewers can use the Saorview app to search for specific programmes on TV and radio, and to set reminders for their chosen programmes or series. This is the first phase of the app. Later in the year additional functionality will be enabled, including the backwards guide with deep linking to ondemand programmes. Then, with the launch of Saorview Connect, users will be able to manage their recordings with the Saorview app and use the app as a remote control for their Saorview Connect box. The Saorview app is available for free from both the App Store and Google Play and is designed to work on mobiles and tablets. Jim Higgins, Saorview’s Business Development Manager said: “The new Saorview app is a great companion for the Saorview service and we hope that many Saorview users will download it and use it to plan their viewing and find out more about the great range of programming on Saorview. “With the launch of Saorview Connect by early 2017, we will be switching on more features in the app, providing users with a more enhanced free TV service.” For more information about the Saorview app, and if you wish to be listed on the website as a retailer of Saorview Approved products, email Jim Higgins at jim@saorview.iemailto:jim@saorview.ie
Spiralized Carrots for Christmas? A trending new product on the US market last year was the spiralizer, with many brands introduced and their use partially boosted by the growth of interest in the paleo diet, which is based on food types eaten by early humans, so mainly meat, fish, vegetables, and fruit and excluding dairy or cereal products and processed food. The spiralizer creates vegetable or hard fruit options to replace grain-based noodles or pasta and can be used, for example, for broccoli stalks, courgettes, carrots, cucumbers, radishes, sweet potatoes, and regular potatoes - items that many children and some adults may not otherwise be keen to eat. Now two models have been launched on to the Irish market, the Morphy Richards Spiralizer Express by Dimpco and the Kenwood Spiralizer, while Spectrum Brands will introduce a Russell Hobbs Spiralizer in February. White Goods Lead the Way “For the first six months of 2016, it has been a mixed bag in terms of performance,” reports Colm Mallon, Territory Manager Ireland, GfK. “Overall, the total market was up 1% in terms of value when compared to the first half of 2015, but this was helped largely by a strong performance in white goods, which was the only area to show growth across all categories. In the other product groups, it was mixture of growth and decline.
Colm Mallon, Territory Manager Ireland, GfK
“TV had a strong June, which helped the overall CE number for the half. Photo and IT also declined, though some IT segments are growing. SDA was the surprise for the half, as it declined in value by 2.5%. Again, there were some areas of growth within this, but it was the fall of some previously strong areas such as Food Prep that influenced the decline, suggesting that some areas may be maturing and reaching saturation point.
What Next? “For the second half of the year, it is difficult to predict what may happen. With regard to external factors, Brexit will certainly affect consumer confidence and exchange rates, though to what extent remains to be seen. Black Friday and the expectations around this from consumers and retailers alike is also an unknown as it is still a relatively new event in the Irish retail calendar. “In terms of product, 4K TV will continue to grow as it has low ownership levels, more content will become available, and there will be a strong focus from manufacturers. The audio categories that have seen growth already this year should also continue as they also
have low ownership levels. “In major appliances, we would expect the growth to continue into the second half of the year, albeit at a lower rate because average price may erode a little. Small appliances may continue to struggle, impacted on by the fall in food prep, though hot beverage makers is an area that gets a boost from gifting at peak, so this will be a positive influence. “Personal care also does well at peak and we would expect that to be the case again this year. IT will be helped by the rise in computing tablets, which should counteract the declines in other areas.”
Consumer Electronics In consumer electronics, TV accounted for nearly three quarters of the total CE value in the first half. TV grew by 1% in value, while volume fell by 5% when compared to the first six months of 2015. While the Euro 2016 football tournament would have been a positive influence, it is being driven more by large screen and 4K purchases. 4K has been a real boon for the TV market and accounts for over a third of TV sales value, which is a quite astounding when you consider the very limited amount of 4K content currently available. 4K sets tend to be larger and at a higher price point, so their performance has been a very welcome boost to the market. Other growth areas in CE have been on the audio side. Wireless speakers (+6%), connected audio (+29%) and soundbars (+10%) have all performed well. Wireless speakers and connected audio benefit from the lifestyle preference of streaming audio, while soundbars gain some

of their growth from the increasing sales of larger screen TVs. That said, soundbars sold only one fifth of the volume of large screen TV (43”+), so there may be an opportunity to increase the attachment ratio here. The more traditional areas of DVD and PMP (portable media players) are in decline (-30% and -23% respectively). Blu Ray actually fared worse than standard DVD and it will be interesting to see what impact 4K Blu Ray will have on this category. PMP is unlikely to recover, as this market has been a victim of the saturation of smartphones.

Appliances Major domestic appliances have continued the strong performance of last year right through the first six months of 2016. Value increased by 12%, while volume grew by 7% in the same period. This means that not only did the market size grow, but also the average transaction price increased. Consumers are willing to trade up to a more premium product if they believe the benefits are worth the price difference. The trend is also for large capacity, be that in laundry, cooling or cooking. Large capacity (8kg and above) washing machines (+55%), side-by-side fridge-freezers (+6%) and range cookers (+31%) are all examples of areas where consumers will pay more, as they can see what the extra spend is returning. Tumble dryers were up 23% compared to last year, but this category is very heavily influenced by the weather. Pyrolytic ovens also did very well, up 39% in value, again reflecting the benefits of offering new technologies. Dishwashers also performed well, with an increase in value of 10% for the half.

Small Domestic Appliances Small appliances had a more turbulent time than previously and it may be a reflection of some of the newer product areas approaching saturation, as the total SDA market value was back 2.5% for the first six months of the year. Food prep has seen enormous growth over the past two years, but was back 13% in value for the first half of the year. This was mainly caused by a fall in liquidisers, which is the largest contributor to the food prep number. The one-time ‘hero’ product has perhaps reached a peak, as ownership levels have risen, and more models have been made available, in turn putting downward pressure on price. Hot beverage makers were flat for the first half, again perhaps indicating increasing ownerships levels and a maturing of this market. Vacuum cleaners were also flat for the first half, but this was a mixture of a fall in the more traditional corded models, while handheld and cordless models continued to enjoy good growth.

Again, it is a reflection of the consumer’s willingness to invest in something new and different as the cordless and handheld models grew by 23% in value. Irons saw a decline of 5%, but again was a mixed bag, as traditional irons fell in contrast to some growth in steam generator models. Kettles and toasters were also flat, but all these flat markets still add up to a considerable amount of revenue and should not be ignored because the total SDA market is worth well over €100 million annually.

IT Like many of the other product areas, IT was also a blend of growth and decline. Overall, the IT market was back 5% for the six months to June, but has been improving in recent months. Desktop computing grew 10% as this is boosted by a demand for all-in-one models, which have re-emerged as a product for all the family. It tends to be located centrally in the home for ease of use and monitoring of younger users, while also acting as a hub for the many wireless devices possibly streaming from it. Mediatablets have fallen by 18% for the first half, due to high ownership and slower replacement cycles. Another impact on this is the emergence of computing tablets (including two-in-one models), which fall into our mobile computing number. Mobile computing was flat for the half, but again this was as a result of a fall in the more traditional laptops and a growth of computing tablets and more premium powerful laptops. Monitors had strong growth for the half (+36%) as consumers perhaps look to replicate office settings at home, with larger or second screens.

Photo Photo has continued to have a tough time, and was back 23% in value for the half. Nearly half of the camera market value is made up of the fixed lens, point and shoot cameras, and it is this type of camera that has been so badly affected by the rise of the smartphone and was back 31% for the six months to June. Some newer fixed lens cameras, such as tough, have done better, and offered some opportunity. Changeable lens cameras (DSLR and compact system cameras) have fared better as these cameras offer something different, and also command a premium, generally being more advanced cameras, as consumers may be buying into a longer term commitment to that brand of camera, lenses and accessories. Although included as part of our consumer electronics numbers and not photo, it is worthwhile noting that one area of the imaging market that is growing is camcorder, and this is being driven by the demand for the action camera format.
WEEE Ireland
WEEE Ireland Collected 31,000 Tonnes in 2015 Irish consumers are recycling 15% more than they did four years ago and are now top of the EU table when it comes to recycling, while retailers collected more than half of the total recycled by WEEE Ireland. This significant increase is outlined in the annual report for 2015 of WEEE Ireland, which has collected nearly 300,000 tonnes of household WEEE for recycling since 2005. The report found that WEEE Ireland collected a total of 30,909 tonnes of electrical and electronic waste in 2015, or a total of 9.04kg per person, compared with the target set of 25,901 tonnes or 8kg per person. Since 2012, the figure per head of population has increased by 15%, from 7.65kg to 9kg. WEEE Ireland’s 900 members include multinational companies such as Apple, Whirlpool, IBM, Philips, and indigenous Irish firms such as Dimpco and Origo. The report also provides an insight into what Irish consumers are recycling. It shows that in 2015 approximately 13 million household appliances were sent for recycling. This included 90,000 fridges and freezers, 600,000 large household appliances, nine million mixed waste electrical and electronic equipment, and 250,000 televisions and monitors. WEEE Ireland’s report also shows that an equivalent to 28 million AA batteries and three million lamps were collected for recycling during 2015.
Retailers The report also notes that retailers are playing an increasingly important role in Ireland’s recycling efforts. Last year, Irish retailers collected 15,706 tonnes of waste electrical and electronic equipment, accounting for over half the amount of this waste collected. This increase, from 12,370 tonnes in 2014, means that WEEE Ireland has the highest percentage of take-back from retailers of any country in the EU. Commenting on the report’s findings, Leo Donovan, WEEE Ireland’s Chief Executive, said: “These results are hugely encouraging and show that Irish consumers and retailers alike are well ahead of other European countries when it comes to recycling. Ireland can proudly say that, more than any other EU country, we have taken a lead in this area.”
Challenges WEEE Ireland also noted a number of recycling challenges. These include the fact that only 25% of small electrical and electronic waste items were being recycled. Also that toys, tools, small appliances, energy saving light bulbs were being either hoarded or sent to the landfill and that small batteries were being put into the black bin instead of being recycled. Leo Donovan said that waste recycling in Ireland faces an external challenge in the years ahead. This challenge centres on an EU
11 - ier·Retail
Directive that sets out that national collection rates of 45% of waste electrical and electronic equipment by 2016 and a 65% national rate by the end of 2018. However, he expressed confidence that the figures contained in the WEEE Ireland annual report showed that Ireland would reach these targets, in the process boosting the circular economy. “The EU’s draft package on the circular economy means that electrical and electronic waste will increasingly be seen as a limited resource rather than waste. Already, hundreds of skilled employees are working on recovering these commodities on WEEE Ireland’s behalf. Our report shows that, thanks to consumers and retailers, purchasing an appliance is now synonymous with recycling waste electronic and electrical equipment.”

Ciaran O’Reilly, Chief Executive, Expert Ireland “I am very impressed at how independent retailers, not just Expert members, have survived the previous seven years, and those that have invested in their stores are doing well,” Ciaran O’Reilly told ier-Retail.
With the addition last year of Komputronik in Poland and Meletronics in Switzerland, Expert International now has 7,700 stores in 23 countries, including 63 in Ireland.
Expert International Ciaran O’Reilly, Chief Executive of Expert Ireland, was re-elected as President of Expert International at the May agm for a third two-year term, having originally joined the Board in October 2011 and been elected as President in March 2012. “Expert International again marked a year of expansion in 2015 and has started 2016 with optimism. Last year the group was boosted by the addition of two strong new licensees: in Poland by specialist retailer Komputronik, with its focus on IT, and in Switzerland by electronics chain Melectronics. The Expert brand is now represented by 7,700 specialist stores in 23 countries, 19 of which are in Europe and one each in Australia, Canada and the USA. “Expert International will celebrate its 50th anniversary in June next year in Athens, having been established on 16th October 1967 as Intercop in Zurich, Switzerland, by representatives of six national retail organisations. “The presidency does not involve a huge amount of work, although it does require a lot of travelling, but most of this involves short-haul flights.
Expert Ireland “Expert Ireland is doing well and I am very impressed at how independent retailers, not just Expert members, have survived the previous seven years. Those that have invested in their stores are doing particularly well because you need a large enough store to offer full ranges of product. It can be very difficult for retailers to please all suppliers with their instore displays. “Our Irish stores compare very well on a sales per square foot basis with other stores in Europe. We now have 63 stores and around 650 staff, with 12 staff in head office. “Our online business is growing on our revamped website at www. expert.ie and logistics is fully centralised. The instore prices have to be the same as those online, but many customers are not shopping
12 - ier·Retail
“Our supplier rationalisation has worked out extremely well…and we may have to go through another phase.” online for price but for convenience, particularly the younger generation. In addition, a lot of online shoppers transfer from the website to being bricks & mortar visitors.” How has the group’s earlier rationalisation of suppliers worked out? “It has worked extremely well and as regards each retailer’s stocking of non-centralised product, whereas we used to work on an 80/20 basis, now it is 90/10. “Expert Ireland’s television sales are growing in value, particularly in high end sales, whereas the overall market is slowing down. Once we saw smaller-screen TVs being bought for every room, now a household tends to have one large-screen TV and they use laptops, tablets or smartphones for viewing elsewhere in the home. The ease of recording and the rise of Netflix etc means that this generation of viewers is not time restricted, and can even watch 10 episodes of a series in one night if they wish. “High-end white goods brands are also doing well, small domestic appliances are still very strong, particularly in medium to high end, accessories are now down to eight suppliers and give us better margins, and IT is still doing well, although that is a difficult sector with low margins. “We may have to go through another phase of supplier rationalisation. We will have to see how the various restructured white goods suppliers each do in 2016 and 2017. BSH now combines three brands, Electrolux three and Whirlpool Corporation four, so that is 10 brands from just those three suppliers.” What will be a big seller for the Christmas season? “Rather than one product I would say that it will be around the whole area of connectivity, but some retailers still have to buy into that proposition, which is mainly being driven by consumer demand.” Finally, how are the revised WEEE Regulations and payments to retailers working out? “The WEEE collection schemes are working very well and any contribution to retailers’ costs are always welcome!”

“The revised WEEE Regulations have been working exceptionally well and retailers have increased their amount of take-back significantly. They are being compensated for every tonne of WEEE returned, with around €2 million distributed over the past 18 months. There is a five-year agreement with six-monthly reviews, with the next due in September. “On the other hand, nothing has really happened as regards recycling appliances for re-use by Rehab Recycle, but then, where is the market currently for second-hand major domestic appliances? “One of the main issues the WGA has is that there are no publicly available accurate market statistics for white goods in Ireland. However, the WGA figures, while excluding Argos, Curry’s, Samsung and Tesco for example, do cover 87% of the total market and the ‘black box’ WEEE figures would be broadly in line with ours. “Last year overall white goods sales increased by around 10% and were boosted by activity in RMI (repair, maintenance and improvement) kitchen refit projects, albeit that the VAT rebates under the Home Renovation Incentive Scheme applied to the kitchen rather than the appliances. “January to March this year saw similar increases, but there have been slightly smaller increases in recent months. According to Department of Housing statistics, 5,625 new homes were completed in 1H2015 and 6,642 in 1H2016, an 18% increase. “The outlook? A major issue is the uncertainty and likely changes that may arise in Ireland from the UK’s Brexit vote. There hasn’t been a WGA meeting since that referendum, but members seem to be in general agreement that Brexit is potentially not good for our sector of the industry.” appliance

interview
Paul O’Connor, Managing Director, Electrolux Group Ireland After some 35 years in its extensive Long Mile Road premises, Electrolux Group Ireland recently moved a few metres up the road to new, more modern leased premises in Westland Business Park on Nangor Road.
Paul O’Connor
“The move, over just two days, was a major achievement and a credit to the Electrolux and Caulfield Transport teams involved,” Paul O’Connor told ier-Retail, “and the move required hoisting 150 heavy appliances up two stories in gale force winds into the new showrooms! “Our new premises, in Suites 7 & 8 on the second floor of Westland House, provide us with 420 sq m of showrooms and 175 sq m of offices in a modern, purpose-built environment. We are still ideally located just off the M50 and just 50 metres or so from our previous location. “I have been Managing Director here since 2000, having joined the company in 1990 and having spent a year in Brussels and another in the UK in the late 1990s. “Electrolux Europe had some difficult years over the recession but has successfully refocused. Here in Ireland we also had some tough years but we have changed from being a fixed cost company to a leaner, more flexible one with fewer staff, smaller leased premises, and have outsourced logistics, the call centre and after-sales. A major challenge was to ensure that service levels did not drop and that has been achieved thanks to outstanding third-party teams. “From a business point of view the change is working well, and the first two quarters of this year have been very good for sales and our Net Promoter Scores are increasing. However, it was difficult to let team members go, some of whom had been with the company for 30-35 years, but we strived to treat them in the best way possible. “We now have 15 staff, as well as five dedicated to Ireland in the Luton call centre, five in contracted after-sales service, and Caulfields Transport for warehousing and logistics, who impressively won the tender process against major international competition.

New Showrooms “Our Cluster HQ, Electrolux UK in Luton, understood the importance of maintaining showrooms and training resources on the island of Ireland, for retailers in the Republic and in Northern Ireland. Although they may seem smaller than those in Long Mile Road, our new Westland House showrooms display the same number of products as before. “These displays focus on our premium market Electrolux brand, which is primarily built-in appliances, and our volume market Zanussi brand, which is built-in and freestanding, including a new co-ordinated laundry range introduced last year. Either one or both of these brands are sold
interview
through 95+% of the electrical retailers throughout Ireland. “Our high-end AEG appliances are mainly distributed through the kitchen studios channel, but the AEG brand is also represented in the showrooms by small domestic appliances and vacuum cleaners.
Innovation “We have repositioned the Electrolux and Zanussi brands in the market place and increased the Electrolux market share. We have leveraged technologies developed for professional appliances, such as steam and sous vide, and migrated them into the Electrolux brand and, along with connectivity, they will inevitably migrate down into the Zanussi brand at some stage. “Innovations need to be consumer focused (combined with allimportant instore training), and we have used professional, often Michelin-starred, chefs in our promotions. These include the Cube, which visited four European cities some years ago, and Taste events around the world, including sponsoring the Dublin event for the past four years and again next year. Taste of Dublin is a great fun showcase for us, attracting many consumers and retailers, and this year we doubled the size of our Chefs’ Secrets cooking demonstration exhibition. “The annual Electrolux Design Lab is also a quirky and interesting competition that inspires innovative thought and design across a wide range of product concepts.
New Products “In addition to last year’s new Zanussi laundry range, the Electrolux builtin range now includes Sous Vide as well as partial/half and full steam and, later this year, a new Plus Steam model will be available. “Also, in 2Q17, we will launch a new Zanussi built-in range.
Brexit “Brexit? The UK vote to leave the EU was a disappointment because the UK is such an important market. As to what it will all mean is still unknown and we are getting different messages, but a significant question to answer will be how do we manage the Northern Ireland business? “Behind all the uncertainty is the past experience that when things go wrong in Ireland they tend to go wrong quickly!
Trade Show “We will be holding a two-day trade show on Tuesday 23rd and Wednesday 24th August, from 9am to 5pm each day, and will be hoping we get as many retailers as possible to see the new showrooms. “After the trade show and after we complete 2017 budgets in September, I hope to be visiting more electrical retailers around the country. Events such as the trade show and Taste of Dublin are great for meeting retailers, but it is also good to see their own premises and to get feedback from the retail staff as to what is developing and working well in the market and what is not going so well. This feedback is critical to linking back to marketing, product line and the factories.”

Shaver Series 9000, Sonicare Toothbrushes and Lumea Epilators
Lumea Epilators Lumea epilators use Intense Pulsed Light technology to safely prevent hair regrowth. IPL is a discreet at-home solution that applies gentle pulses of light to the hair root to produce heat that is transferred to the hair follicle. This stimulates the hair follicle to go into a resting phase and as a consequence the hair sheds naturally and regrowth is inhibited. Studies have shown over 80% hair reduction in as little as four bi-weekly treatments.
The Philips Shaver series 9000 has unique proprietary Contour detect technology, with the shaving heads flexing in eight different directions to detect and follow every contour of the face, for a precise shave that gets up to 20% more hairs than the previous SensoTouch models in a single pass. The shaver can be used for wet or dry shaving.

1.2kW steam generator creates the steam outside the cavity to avoid scaling. The new steam inlet cavity is in the rear wall next to the fan. This ensures the steam is circulated via the rear vents together with the hot air.
FullSteam Combination Oven Neff’s new B48FT78N0B built-in CircoTherm oven with FullSteam and Slide&Hide combines all heating types and steam cooking in a single oven with unrestricted access. CircoTherm draws air in from the oven via a stainless steel fan, then heats up the air and forces it back into the oven cavity through ducts in the rear wall. The desired temperature is achieved quicker and more evenly than in a conventional oven, saving time and energy as little or no preheating is required. A new PowerBoost function speeds things up even more when cooking for short periods of time. The hot air is focused directly on to the food being cooked, wrapping the shelves to ensure the surfaces of baked and roasted items seal quickly. This keeps moisture in and prevents flavour transfer, so you can cook an entire three-course meal using all levels of the oven at the same time. The FullSteam oven allows you to cook using VarioSteam added moisture or 100% pure steam. The FullSteam function is available in selected full-sized 60cm enameled cavity ovens and in steam 45cm compact appliances. The feature uses a patented dual-pump system with the first pump transporting fresh water from the tank to the evaporator and the second pump automatically draining out any residual water. PowerDry Whirlpool’s unique PowerDry technology delivers spotless drying, even on plastics. PowerDry actively collects the humidity created after the final rinsing phase. This is rapidly condensed into water that is removed to leave cool, spotlessly dry dishes. This system minimises the energy required to dry and, in combination with ultra efficient inverter motors, is able to deliver energy class A+++ -10% efficiency. The closed loop system doesn’t vent steam out of the dishwasher but actively sucks humid air from the main cavity to be condensed into cool water that can be harmlessly drained away, helping to protect kitchen furniture such as wooden worktops that might be damaged by steam.
Contemporary Design The SupremeClean features Whirlpool’s high end, contemporary styling, using premium materials such as brushed and chrome stainless steel. High quality, easy to read screens are used alongside ergonomically optimised controls, with intuitive interfaces. Inside, bold red accents indicate the PowerClean Pro Zone and the intake for the PowerDry system, offering a contrast to the metal interior and showing users where to position dishes for the best results.
