Saorview Connect Shortlisted for Innovation Award Saorview Connect is among three entries shortlisted out of over 200 for the prestigious @IBCShow Innovation award in the ‘Content Everywhere’ category. Since the launch of Saorview Connect last November, Saorview has been building brand awareness through TV and social campaigns and research shows that awareness of the Saorview Connect product and ad recall is high. Queries received by Saorview suggest that customers want to know more about the specific features that Saorview Connect has to offer. When customers understand the product better, this knowledge helps to drive sales. In response to this, Saorview designed a new media campaign designed to help customers understand why Saorview Connect is ‘The Future of Free TV’. The campaign built on the work done in the initial

awareness campaign and addressed the core issue of consumer understanding. Saorview worked with the Thinkhouse agency to develop a suite of four 30-second TV commercials and four radio commercials, each ‘unwrapping’ a different feature of Saorview Connect for the consumer. Building on the shopping channel host character introduced to consumers in the innovative Facebook live event earlier this year, comedian Tony Cantwell, in his quirky manner, informed customers of the benefits of the Saorview Connect offering. The campaign started on RTÉ TV and radio on 28th May and continued with slots throughout the World Cup and beyond. It was supported by social media activity that replicated the consumer information message and carried a clear call to action intended to drive sales of Saorview Connect.

TP Vision Enters Global Brand License Agreement for Philips Audio and Video Products and Accessories
Royal Philips has granted TPV Technology Ltd an exclusive license agreement to use the Philips brand for sales, marketing and distribution of audio and video products and accessories worldwide. The brand license agreement commenced on 1st June 2018 for a period until 31st December 2023, and may be renewed automatically, subject to the terms of the agreement. The financial details were not disclosed. Until recently, Gibson Innovations was responsible for sales, marketing and distribution of Philipsbranded audio and video products and accessories worldwide. After its parent company Gibson Brands filed for Chapter 11 in the USA on 1st May 2018, and its affiliates subsequently took similar steps in
other countries, Philips explored several scenarios regarding the continuity of Philips-branded audio and video products and accessories. TPV has been a partner of Philips for more than a decade. The brand license agreement for audio and video products and accessories will complement TPV’s existing brand license agreements with Philips, for example for TVs and monitors. Since 1st May, Exertis had been accepting faulty warranty product in order to support its customers, in the knowledge that Exertis would not be recompensed by Gibson. However, since 1st June, TPV has taken over responsibility for the warranty of Philips Audio and Video products sold after 1st June.

The KAL Group has added the Bertazzoni brand to its portfolio of kitchen appliances. A sixth-generation, family-owned Italian company with a heritage stretching back over 136 years, Bertazzoni specialises in range cookers, ovens, hobs, extractor units and warming drawers. Jonathan Hughes, Managing Director, KAL, told IER-Retail: “We have been assessing opportunities to enter the premium range cooker market for some time, but have delayed doing so until we could find a brand partner with whom we could make a real impact. “In Bertazzoni we believe we now have that brand. The cookers share the same paint shop and paint process as high-end Italian sport cars such as Ferrari.”

BALTRAY GOLF DAY COMMEMORATES MICHAEL BRISCOE’S 25TH ANNIVERSARY
A selection of guests enjoying the sunny weather.
This year’s annual sponsorship of a semi open golf day in Co Louth Golf Club by Briscoe’s commemorated the 25th anniversary of Michael Briscoe’s passing. In welcoming the assembled participants at a very crowed prize giving, Michael’s wife Anne described the annual event as “his social night” and thanked the attendance, including Briscoe’s invited guests, for contributing to the continuation of the business subsequent to Michael’s untimely passing. On a family note she thanked her friends and family for their continued support during her prolonged illness and, to great applause, announced that she had just been given a clean bill of health. Always a popular day in the Baltray links golfing calendar, this year’s outing was played in perfect golfing conditions and a superb ‘après ski’ contributed greatly to the day’s overwhelming success.

EXPERT STAFF AND SUPPLIERS KICK OFF A CHARITY EVENT A new industry event was organised in Mullingar recently when staff of Expert stores faced up to a Suppliers team in soccer. This inaugural match (set to become an annual event) was in aid of a local charity, the LARCC Cancer Support Sanctuary in Multyfarnham, Co Westmeath. The match was played in a competitive spirit throughout and when normal time could not separate the teams (5-5) it went to penalties. Closely contested, the match was shaded by a single goal in favour of the Suppliers. At the presentation of the trophy, Ciaran O’Reilly, Chief Executive, Expert Ireland, considered that the event had been a real success and hoped that it was the first of many. He thanked the gear sponsors and Expert dealers for their financial contributions and suggested that the selection of a benefiting charity should alternate between the sides annually. The Expert team was captained by Laura McCormack, the event’s main organiser, while Ken McGlynn captained the Suppliers team.

STUART BROADHURST, MANAGING DIRECTOR AND CHIEF EXECUTIVE, FISHER & PAYKEL GLOBAL
Stuart Broadhurst meets the Ireland team: Declan Dunne, Service Manager; Larry Murtagh, Sales Manager; Stuart Broadhurst, Managing Director and Chief Executive; Kevin Riordan, General Manager Ireland; Brian Sheridan, Warehouse Manager; Jill Keegan and Tracy McDermott, Sales Office Administration.
During a brief business visit to Dublin, Stuart Broadhurst, Managing Director of Fisher & Paykel Global, took time out from meeting the Ireland team to talk with IER-Retail. Stuart Broadhurst was appointed Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Fisher & Paykel Appliances in December 2009 and has over 30 years’ industry experience in every aspect of the company’s global operations. Since 1988, he has held senior management positions within New Zealand and Australia. He has also held key leadership roles for Fisher & Paykel in the USA, UK and Europe, where he project managed, established and developed major business units. “We made a commitment to Ireland a few years ago and still do as we take a long-term view,” he said. “We continue to fill out the product portfolio and now offer some 300 products. The bulk of our business is with independents and a challenge is how to present all these products on their shopfloors, such as through in-store digital interfaces.” Kevin Riordan, General Manager Ireland, added: “When we launched in Ireland the independents gave us very fair coverage and kept products on display. It is great to see how many have come through the recession and have been investing in their stores.”
Haier Group Company New Zealand-based Fisher & Paykel’s brand vision is “To be the most human-centred appliance brand in the world” and has been designing premium kitchen appliances since 1934. It has grown into a global company that now operates in 50 countries with over 4,000 employees and manufactures in Thailand, China, Italy and Mexico. In 2012 the company was acquired by the major Chinese group Haier and since then 8
Fisher & Paykel has strengthened its global presence as a premium home appliance brand. All Fisher & Paykel products are designed at the NZ Design Centre, based at two locations in Auckland and Dunedin. The New Zealand Design Centre has been recognised as one of the wider Haier Group’s five global research and development centres of excellence. “Fisher & Paykel needed investment for technology and in 2012 Haier had about 30% of the Chinese market,” said Stuart. “Since then we have been sharing technologies and undertaking global planning with common platforms. Haier’s arrival inevitably generated some concerns in New Zealand about a ‘take-over’, but Haier are appliance people and believe in combining global planning with local control, and Fisher & Paykel has continued to make its own decisions. We also now have a factory in China and have begun distributing in China since July. “Indeed, our experience proved to be of some ‘comfort’ to others in the USA when the Haier Group went on to acquire GE in 2016. We helped GE to integrate into the Group, the sheer scale of which is of great benefit with regard to global procurements. “While Haier has a regional team for Europe based in France, Fisher & Paykel has its own separate team. Combined brands distribution? No, I don’t see distribution of Haier, Fisher & Paykel and GE brands being combined in Ireland or the UK.” Kevin added: “Taking on another brand here would be a distraction!”
Exhibiting Innovations Fisher & Paykel’s many appliance innovations include the multi-award-winning DishDrawer Dishwasher, the CoolDrawer Multi-temperature Drawer that changes from a refrigerator to a freezer at the touch of a button, and the new Integrated Column Refrigerator and Freezers with Variable Temperature Zone. “Recently we have doing more to exhibit our innovative products around the world. We exhibited at IFA Berlin for the first time in 2017, as well as area30 in Germany, at AWE in Shanghai in March this year, and at Eurocuchina in Milan last April.
Current Trends “Kitchens are increasingly personalised social places, so the Fisher & Paykel brand offers a range of freestanding solutions in Classic, Contemporary and Professional collections. “The market in Ireland is up to around €200 million in sales, of which 15% is in premium products and we want to get 15% of that. Yes, there is some benefit coming through from the small increase in new housing and refurbishments. “Brexit? We have to sit and wait to see what actually happens! We hold large stocks here, so retailers do not need to, and if a product is EUapproved and in the UK stock then Kevin can get it quickly. In the odd time that we do get caught out it can also be got direct from one of the factories. “Brand loyalty has largely gone these days, but purchasing online is low in Ireland compared to the UK. A challenge for retailers is to convert millennials to premium Fisher & Paykel products on the shopfloor.”

SEÁN HENNESSY ELECTRICAL SUPERSTORE, RATHKEALE, CO LIMERICK IER-Retail had an opportunity recently to pay an early visit to Seán Hennessy’s new superstore in Rathkeale, Co Limerick, and could not fail to be impressed at the scale and attention to detail that is presented. The original shop was established in the Main Street in 1979 and traded in brown goods only, but Seán Hennessy Electrical Superstores has expanded over the years to add branches in Shannon, Newcastle West and Mallow. The first was opened in Shannon, Co Clare, in 2000, but after three years its shopping centre location had become too small and necessitated a move to Smithstown in Shannon. In the meantime, in 2001, a branch had been opened at St Mary’s Road in Newcastle West, Co Limerick, and then another, in 2004, at Muddy Hill in Mallow, Co Cork. Indeed, between moves, new branches and changes the company effectively opened seven outlets in seven years! This expansion allowed the inclusion of white goods to the product portfolios. Although the company was about to commit to two more (expensive) sites in two different counties, the start of the downturn came and in the autumn of 2007 the decisions were delayed (“thankfully!” admits Seán) until early 2008, when he pulled out of the projects. “Had I gone ahead we would surely have lost everything,” said Seán. As it was, some severe cutbacks had to be effected, including the loss of valued staff members, “which was the worst part”. In order to supply the four superstores with stock, the company began in 2006/2007 to build the current superstore in Rathkeale as a warehouse to enable centralisation of the extensive stock that was needed to compete. A further ‘high storage’ section was added, along with a proper goods inwards/outwards section and parking. In 2012, in order to generate business, it was decided to open the warehouse as a shop and offer special sale deals. The first one attracted about a hundred people, but the second attracted a thousand customers. Seán Hennessy was only able to cope on the day with the help of extra staff supplied by “every supplier we did business with”. Five of these events were held over a 15-month period. These warehouse sales showcased Seán Hennessy’s potential, dispelling any previous perceptions of the business only being a small shop on the main street lacking stock and competitiveness to the superstore that is in its place today! 10
The Hennessy team: Tina Costelloe, MaryJane O’Sullivan, Seán Hennessy, Sam Hennessy, Antoinetta Diaz, Geraldine Kelly, Mark Hennessy, Margaret Collins, Brid Keating, Deirdre Condon, and Jerry O’Brien.
Seán Hennessy uses social media to promote his business, as well as extensive press and local radio advertising. He has also found they get a great response from sponsoring local team jerseys and has started to display framed versions in the new superstore.

Ciaran O’Reilly, Chief Executive, Expert Ireland, on a recent visit to the new store.
Jerry O’Brien has been with the company from the start. Jerry has seen Seán through bad times and good, and remains not only a great right-hand man, imparting his knowledge to the rest of the staff, but a great friend.
Expert Member Speaking about finally deciding to join a group, Seán reminded us that he was a founding member of Natelex, the forerunner to the Expert Group, of which he is now a part. He admitted he was slow to ‘concede control’ and opted out before it became a reality. He carefully considered recent invitations from both groups to join and eventually selected Expert because he just felt that their model would suit his business a little better. He also spoke candidly about the change to his health, which was brought on by business stress just three weeks after the completion of the restructuring of the Mallow branch in 2015. He speaks positively of how he has adjusted his lifestyle to ensure that there would be no perceived change to his daily business routine. He freely admits that he has almost an obsession with clean storage lines, both in the shop and in the superstores. He insists on all products being stored in order and in line – and also admits that his ‘obsession’ has translated to all the staff. He outlined just how
much he checked all details during the internal fit-out of the superstore, from accurate floor tiling to graphics and painting, resulting in some contractors having to redo work if not 100% to his satisfaction. He sourced grade 10 tiles to ensure complete safety underfoot for his customers. Discussing the displays of built-in kitchens (a sector he knows he can grow) with suppliers, he insisted that they all construct white only kitchens for uniformity. This detail is also apparent in the freestanding displays, with each gondola reduced from the supplied size to just a 3” plinth height so as not to obstruct the overall view from the front to the back of the showroom. He spoke also about the support services that the company offers and claims to have a great name for service and delivery. He has a very active website (seanhennessy.ie) and employs a full-time graphic designer – and therefore finds it easy to react quickly to change. Because Hennessy’s does not open on Bank Holidays, he uses the website to create a 10% Off web-only weekend special on the Sunday and
Monday. He also reacted quickly to be the first to offer a 10% Off sale on the first day of the recent snow, which saw the shops closed. He says that his web business is “small but very successful” and sends product not only to all of Ireland but also to the UK, France, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Austria, and Sweden. Even at this early stage the new 35,000 sq ft Rathkeale superstore is now ranked no 1 from no 4 before the change. He pays special tribute to his 30 staff members and his suppliers who contribute significantly to the success of the group. He also noted the support and encouragement given by family and friends down through the years, and very much so in the past three, in helping him realise his dream of opening his flagship superstore in his much-loved home town of Rathkeale. Seán Hennessy already has plans in place to upgrade the Shannon branch to reflect the new Rathkeale superstore. The company set out to create a ‘wow’ factor with this new upgrade in Rathkeale and to this observer it has achieved just that. 11

TV sales appear to have benefitted from the 2018 World Cup, up 7% in volume, slightly more in value.
As usual, we have to bemoan the disappointing performance of other Vision products. DVD and Blu-ray declined by nearly 20%, despite the emergence of 4K Blu-ray. Although Soundbars grew by 4% in volume, there was a 4% shortfall in value. The Audio Systems market had a quiet first half after previous years’ growth, as consumers seemingly wait patiently for Black Friday. However, there was further evidence of the rebirth of turntables, as Audio Systems offering this retro feature gained a more visible market presence. Headphones enjoyed the most high profile success among Audio HI-FI products as consumers move towards high-end Bluetooth and Noise Cancellation products.
terms of the battle between selling entry level and selling up. If ASP starts to slip here, the gains in volume will not be reflected in value. The final quarter of the year will be the decider as Black Friday and Christmas promotions will determine whether the growth of the first half is built on or wiped out. Volume is flat for the year so far, so promoting step-up models will give a change to boost value, while focussing on entry level pricing will only lower the return on a hard fought sale.
CE: TV Leads the Way, Up in Value but Back in Price At face value, 2018 has been a reasonable year so far for the Consumer Electronics industry. Volume sales are in line with the quantities recorded in the first six months of 2017 and market turnover is up 5% in the same period. However, there is still an occasionally frustrating variation in market performance when we look at individual product groups and features. TV sales appear to have benefitted from the 2018 World Cup, up 7% in volume, slightly more in value. We are enjoying increased uptake of 4K and, within that, OLED value has almost tripled. At the same time, Smart TV has become the default option for the 40”+ TVs that now dominate the category.

MDA: Stable Prices Means Steady Growth for Appliances
The Major Domestic Appliances market continues to perform well, up 5% in value for the first half of 2018. This is despite the February cold snap causing a 5% monthly decline and a slowdown of growth in June to only +0.9%. All categories © GfK 2018 have experienced an uplift over the first six months of the year, with Tumble Dryers and Hoods continuing to be the best performers, up 18% and 15% respectively. The slowest growth came from Cooking as built-in ovens only saw +0.1% value increase, while freestanding cookers fared slightly better at +3%. Range Cookers are still in favour with consumers, now accounting for over 40% of all freestanding cooking value and coming with the premium price tag of on average €1,787. On the other hand, double-cavity Integrated Ovens have seen a decline, dropping below 50% of ovens’ value. Prices have remained stable compared to last year, with the average selling price for a major appliance staying at €381, although in the month of June prices rose by 2.4%. This is in tandem with the value growth of 5%, which has seen steady growth over the first half of the year.
SDA: Handstick Vacuums Drive Year-to-Date Value Growth 2018 to date has shown a mixed performance across Small Domestic Appliances as value rose 6.7% against 2017 yet volume fell 1.9% over the same period. On the personal care side, Hair Dryers and Hair Stylers recorded declines of 6% and 8% respectively in value despite average price continuing to increase. The Shavers market was more positive, up 5% with particularly strong 13

growth from female hair removal products in the build-up to summer as Epilators and Laser/IPL products both saw double-digit rises. The small kitchen appliance market managed a stronger performance with Hot Beverage Makers the leading category, showing a 13% increase in value. As well as ongoing success for single serve machines (which use a pod or capsule from a specific supplier), bean-to-cup machines contributed an additional €167,000 over the year-to-date period. With an average selling price of €463 this again demonstrates that consumers are increasingly willing to spend on premium products within SDA markets. By far the best performing category over 2018 so far has been Handstick Vacuum Cleaners. Adding an additional €4 million and helping to offset the €1.2 million decline among more traditional cylinder models, the category grew 51% in value terms. Together with a steadily increasing average selling price, currently standing at €306, this market looks set to be the standout performer for SDA in 2018.

NikolaTesla Prime is the latest aspirating induction extractor hob by Elica in which induction and extraction are combined in a single product. The surfaces are designed with easy cleaning in mind and the product has the Elica AirCapture system: the aspiration system adjusts itself according to the quantity of the fumes and the kind of odours that are emitted, based on the set cooking power. Franke’s new four-in-one Omni mixer tap (SRP: €1,799) is the only tap on the market to offer filtered boiling water at a full 100˚C, filtered cold water, and standard mains hot and cold, all from a single tap mixer. The Omni has a threeyear warranty, is easy to operate and fully reversible. One lever is for mains hot and cold, while the other lever dispenses the filtered boiling and filtered cold water. Designwise, Omni marries the appeal of a swan-neck spout with the build quality
and prestige of hi-shine solid stainless steel. Premium filtration uses the patented technology that features on all Franke Filterflow taps, with a separate tube to maintain the water’s integrity and an LED that tells the user when a new filter cartridge needs fitting. The filter removes impurities but leaves in healthy minerals in the drinking water, while also reducing the build-up of limescale in the boiling water tank. Replacement cartridges are required every six to nine months depending on usage and
are easy to order and self-fit. The 100˚C boiling water function has a triple safety features including a push and turn activation function, a spring-loaded shut off and a new child safety clip that can be fitted optionally to prevent the tap from being accidentally turned on. The compact 4-litre stainless steel tank and filter fit neatly into the under-sink cupboard and will dispense the equivalent of eight cups of hot water or two pan fulls with a fast replenishment time.

Dimplex IgniteXL F74 LS2 linear electric fireplace.
Dimplex has consistently led the way in product innovation and ‘effect’ for electric fires. New building regulations and better insulated homes mean less need for secondary heat and a greater emphasis on efficiency and aesthetics. This year brings the biggest launch this decade, 24
including the ‘Ignite’ range of streamlined built-in electric fires. Also new to Glen Dimplex is the completely revamped ‘Flame’ showroom featuring over a dozen new fire models and, if you fancy a nice relaxing twist for your home or showroom, try out
the new ‘aquarium’. Glen Dimplex plans its portable heating requirements early and has lots of the season’s heating already in stock, with great value across a broad range of electric blankets, radiators, dehumidifiers, convectors and fan heaters.
The new Hotpoint Active washing machine’s ActiveCare system removes more than 100 stains at only 20°C. The detergent is premixed with water and creates an Active Mousse, speeding up the action of enzymes. The higher efficacy of the mousse leads to the same cleaning results of a classic detergent, but at lower temperatures, helping to preserve colours and fabrics. The 10 multiple movements of the Active Drum are also responsible for the cleaning performance, while the Active Load intelligent technology sets the right amount of water and time, depending on the load size and type, boosting performance while minimising energy and water consumption. The Steam Hygiene programme eliminates 99.9% of most common bacteria, even at a low temperature, while the Steam Refresh cycle revives clothes with steam molecules – all in just 20 minutes.
The new Hotpoint HQ9 E1L French Door Bottom Mount Quatro fridgefreezer is equipped with high-tech preservation features and flexible storage solutions. Features include top LED diffused lighting, 591 litres net capacity, inverter compressor, and less than 70cm depth.

There is a choice of stainless steel, white, black, or integrated models that now come with a completely buttonless front panel. The washer dryer can wash and dry an average load in under three hours: 7kg wash load and 4kg dry load. Add a Garment allows you to pause your wash cycle and add or remove an item.
