New White Goods Showrooms to Impress at Trade Shows

Electrical Goods Sales Volume Up 9.5%

With trade show time (Tuesday 25th - Thursday 27th August) fast approaching, new showrooms by white goods distributors will be a major highlight, reflecting the 10% growth in sales in January - June reported by the White Goods Association. Combined with overall electrical sales growth in the second quarter of 9.5% and increasing consumer confidence and, for many, increasing disposable income, suppliers and retailers are looking to the traditional ‘kick-start to the season’ with optimism.

Volume sales of electrical goods in the second quarter of 2015 increased by 9.5%, according to both the latest CSO figures and Consumer Market Monitor.

CSO The overall volume of retail sales (i.e. excluding price effects) decreased by 3.9% in June 2015 when compared with May 2015 and there was an increase of 5.4% in the annual figure, according to the latest figures from the Central Statistics Office. The sector with the largest month-on-month volume increase was Books, Newspapers and Stationery at 5.6%. If Motor Trades are excluded, there was an increase of 0.4% in the volume of retail sales in June when compared with May and there was an increase of 5.8% in the annual figure. There was a decrease of 1.7% in the value of retail sales in June when compared with May and there was an annual increase of 3.1% when compared with June 2014. If Motor Trades are excluded, there was a monthly increase of 0.5% in the value of retail sales and an annual increase of 3.1%.

Electrical Goods The new BSH showrooms highlight the Neff, Siemens and Bosch brands, while Origo is featuring its new Amica brand, KAL its new Bauknecht brand (see pages 15 -18), while Beko has doubled its showroom space to feature the Beko, Grundig and Blomberg brands (page 19). Dimpco is showing its new premium Britannia brand, while Fisher & Paykel will be featuring new washers with Vortex Wash and Flat White fridge-freezers and Electrolux will showcase its SousVide and InfinitePure induction hob and launch the new Zanussi Lindo 100 laundry range. Whirlpool will not be showing this year because its new Centre of Excellence will not be completed until next month. Irish distributors of small domestic appliances, of which sales increased in value by 14% in the first half of the year, will also have many new and innovative products on display, including the new range of Air Cordless vacuum cleaners by Vax, on show at Charlie Shiels along with new Daewoo built-in and colour microwave ovens, Kenwood kCook cooking food processor, GPO turntables and Beurer monitors and Elle beauty products. Dimpco is launching new designer ranges of kettles and toasters, an extended range of slow cookers and soup makers, and new products from Braun and Oral B. Spectrum will showcase Russell Hobbs’ special edition Legacy Collection breakfast range, new Aura range and the Multi Cooker ‘one-stop appliance’. KAL will show Sharp’s new combination microwave and InSinkErator’s new three-in-one kitchen tap.

Consumer Market Monitor Meanwhile, consumer confidence in Ireland is now higher than in the rest of Europe and consumer spending is contributing to economic growth for the first time since 2008, according to the latest Consumer Market Monitor published by UCD Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School and the Marketing Institute of Ireland. According to the report, retail sales volume rose by 3.7% in 2014, and value by 1.6%. In 2015 sales volume increased by 6.6% year-on-year for the second quarter, and by 4.8% in the first quarter, resulting in a 5.7% increase for the first half of this year. Value sales increased by 3.4% in the second quarter, following a 1% increase in the first quarter. In particular, volume sales of electrical goods were up by 9.5% in the second quarter. The Consumer Market Monitor also shows that household disposable income increased by 3% in 2013 (the first increase since 2008), by 3% in 2014, and is expected to increase further in 2015.

how to perform the upgrade can be found in the consumer instruction manual, available for download from www.walker.ie The Saorview OAD system is intended to support manufacturers and suppliers of Saorview Approved equipment, and is provided solely for use with Saorview Approved products. Exsparetise Celebrates 10th Anniversary Exsparetise Ltd, the Tullamore-based Irish company wholesaling domestic appliance spare parts, consumables, vacuum cleaners and small appliances, celebrated its 10th anniversary this month, on 15th August.

€9.15 Minimum Wage Rate Recommended by LPC

Exsparetise directors Tristin Quinn, Ryan Quinn and Derek Brennan

The company was established in 2005 by brothers Tristin and Ryan Quinn, Managing Director and Sales Director respectively, together with Derek Brennan, Purchasing Director. In October 2013 Exsparetise moved from its second rented premises to larger and better located premises bought at the Cloncollig Industrial Estate that provides, with a new floor added, some 1,500 sq m, which is three times the space at the previous premises. Tristan told IER-Retail: “We now have 15 staff and over 1,000 accounts with retailers and engineers, of which 75% would be with retailers. We stock thousands of parts for all major brands, offer 24-hour delivery as well as a quick special order service, and are an official distributor for Qualtex spares and products in Ireland, north and south. “Having already achieved such a high market penetration in spare parts, and with a premises larger than required for those, we plan to diversify a little into new areas, so watch this space!” Exsparetise Ltd is at Spare Parts Warehouse, Units 1 - 3, Cloncollig Industrial Estate, Tullamore, Co Offaly, T: 0818 31 32 33 or +353 (0)57 935 2018.

The Low Pay Commission has recommended that the Government adopts a 50 cent increase in the minimum wage hourly rate, from €8.65 to €9.15, which could see the lowest paid workers receive an annual increase of €1,014. The LPC looked at data from a range of sources, took submissions from interested parties and met minimum wage workers and their employers. Other factors taken into account were competitiveness, currency exchange and unemployment. An Taoiseach Enda Kenny TD has said that measures would be introduced in the budget to help pave the way for reform. The Government, which last increased the minimum wage by €1.00 in July 2011, will also examine changes to PRSI as part of the plan. A report by think-tank TASC said that more than three-quarters of people think the minimum wage should be increased to €11.50 an hour, the recognised salary needed for someone to live above the breadline.

Living Wage Technical Group The Living Wage Technical Group (comprising trade unions, thinktanks TASC and NERI, Social Justice Ireland, and the Vincentian Partnership for Social Justice) believes that the current hourly rate of €11.45 should be increased by 5 cent to match the rising costs of living. The group, established last year, believes workers should be paid at least €11.50 per hour to make “a minimum acceptable standard of living” possible. They said that the increase in housing costs, household goods and services, car insurance and rising rents are the main drivers for the need of an increase. This rate is 33% higher than the current minimum wage of €8.65 per hour.

Retail Ireland said that recommendations to increase the minimum wage by €0.50 per hour will have a disproportionate impact on retail, an industry which by its very nature is enormously labour intensive. Conor Whelan, Chairman, said: “These proposals come at a highly precarious time for Irish retail, the country’s largest private employer and most geographically diverse industry. Over recent months we have finally seen a return to modest growth after years of devastating contraction. Adding additional costs to the operating environment at this time is premature and unjustified. “An increase in the minimum wage may have the counter-productive effect of ultimately lowering take home pay, as employee hours may have to be cut by some operators to balance the significant increase in labour costs. Additionally, the possibility of such an increase taking effect in January, a month which traditionally sees sluggish sales after the busy Christmas trading period, will negatively impact on cash flow in the sector, giving rise to the possibility of yet more high profile store closures.”

by Waterford Stanley, now part of the Middleby Corporation

Middleby Buys AGA Rangemaster for £129 million American specialist appliance distributor Middleby Corporation bought British range cooker manufacturer Aga Rangemaster Group plc in July for £129 million. Middleby UK reintroduced its Viking brand of range cookers into the UK market last May, targeting premium specialists and kitchen retailers. AGA Rangemaster bought Irish stove manufacturer Waterford Stanley in 2005, but Middleby’s plans for that company have yet to be determined. John Coleman, Chairman, Aga Rangemaster, said: “Middleby provides a larger scale framework, including an established international structure to deliver fully on the potential of the business. The financial strength of Middleby also achieves a better balance with Aga’s pension obligations, which are large in relation to the existing business and which have become a significant constraint on the progress of the group.” William McGrath, Chief Executive, added: “Our innovation and investment over recent years has created a new generation of products relevant to today’s consumer. Aga will be the European platform for Middleby and our cookers will b sold through Middleby distribution channels, which will increase growth rates in North America and in other international markets. We believe Middleby will build on our progress to date and successfully develop our iconic and unique brands for the future." Selim Bassoul, Chairman and Chief Executive, Middleby Corporation, said: “The addition of Aga’s world-class brands, product range and manufacturing capability to our existing portfolio will further strengthen Middleby’s global reach and enhance our position as a leader in the premium segment for residential kitchen equipment.”

Global 4K TV Sales to Increase by 147%

Quiet Mark Accreditation for Whirlpool Supreme Care Washers Whirlpool’s new A+++ energy-rated Supreme Care washing machines with ZenTechnology have won Quiet Mark accreditation and claim the quietest spin cycle on the market with an average noise level of 67 dB(A). “Washing machines are traditionally one of the appliances that consumers complain about the most in terms of noise impact,” said Poppy Szkiler, Managing Director, Quiet Mark. “With the development of the Supreme Care washing machines, Whirlpool has shown that carefully considered design and investment in product innovation leads to a reduction in unwanted noise, helping to create a more peaceful aural environment for everyone to share, while still delivering excellence in product performance.”

Global sales of 4K TVs are set to increase by 147% to 30 million units by the end of this year, according to specialist research and consulting service Futuresource in its Worldwide TV Market Report’. The research found that, despite an overall 2% dip in sales this year, 4K models with larger screens are being adopted much faster than previously forecast. Strong growth is also expected from curved screens, boosted by 4K, while smart TV is also continuing on an upward trend, although not at the pace previously anticipated. In 2014 globally, overall TV sales increased by 3% to 235 million units, with a sales value of $94 billion (€85.7bn), while sales growth in Europe was also 3%.

Bosch Plans Global SO Division Effective from 1st January 2016, Bosch plans to set up a new division, Bosh Global Service Solutions (SO), which will bring together all the internal and external services offered by the company. As well as continuing successful services such as eCall, customer support and business process outsourcing, SO will also become the comprehensive Bosch-internal provider of shared service functions relating to administration and sales. The division will emerge from the Service Solutions business unit, which is run by Bosch Sicherheitssysteme GmbH and headquartered in Frankfurt. At a later date it will carved out as an independent legal entity.

Retailers Unhappy with Dubin City Centre Pedestrianisation Proposals Retail organisations Retail Ireland and DublinTown have reacted negatively to the Dublin City Centre Transport Study proposals published in June by the National Transport Authority and Dublin City Council. The proposals include moving vehicular traffic away from the city centre and closing College Green to cars, vans and taxis to create a plaza serving Luas and bus passengers, cyclists and pedestrians in front of Trinity College. Westmoreland Street, Suffolk Street, Burgh Quay and Bachelors Walk would also be pedestrianised. The overwhelming majority of large city centre retailers have expressed grave concern at the plans as currently set out and the impact they would have on footfall and turnover. Retail Ireland and DublinTown say that the proposals are likely to make large portions of the city entirely inaccessible to shoppers who prefer or need to travel by car, and would have a very serious and damaging knock on effect on city centre retailers. The groups said many of the study’s recommendations were vague and called for any new proposals for city centre transport management to first be subject to robust impact assessment. Conor Whelan, Managing Director, Eason, and Chairman, Retail Ireland, said: “City centre retailers support efforts to improve Dublin’s public transport and the city’s environment for pedestrians and cyclists. However, these efforts should never come at the

8

College Green without cars, vans or taxis as envisaged by the Dublin City Centre Transport Study

expense of private traffic access, to the point where large portions of the city centre are entirely inaccessible to shoppers who prefer to take their car. “Dublin retailers have raised very serious concerns about the study’s proposals on car parking, tourist coach parking and, crucially, the ability of commercial vehicles to conduct downtown deliveries. We are very disappointed that the measures were published without any consultation with Dublin’s retailers, which themselves play an enormous role in city life and generate a large portion of the DCC’s income through commercial rates.” Ray Hernan, Chief Executive, Arnotts, and Chairperson, DublinTown, said: “The results of the NTA’s own on-street survey of 1,671 shoppers in October last year found that those who had driven to the city centre accounted for the highest average spend. Our view is that private traffic can exist harmoniously alongside public transport and that one mode need not have to replace the other to the detriment of the city centre’s business community.”

GfK Update

Chances to Build on First-Half Performance Now that we have figures for the first half of the year, it is clear that, while consumer confidence is returning, there are still a few potholes on the road to recovery, writes Colm Mallon, Territory Manager Ireland, GfK. When taking the market as a whole, performance has been relatively flat overall. The growth in small and major appliances has been counteracted by a decline in photo and IT, while consumer electronics growth was negligible. There are many reasons for the mixture of performance. Major appliances have shown steady growth as consumers replace and upgrade with new features. Large American-style cooling drives value growth, as do larger, more efficient washing machines. Premium small appliances such as coffee makers, juicers and vacuums have all grown due to consumer uptake in higher priced models. The performance of CE is dictated by the performance of TV, and while this started the year well, in June it Colm Mallon, Territory Manager Ireland, GfK was actually back 11% in value for the month. While this sounds like an alarming decline, it is primarily due to being compared to the sales for June 2014, which had the soccer World Cup to drive footfall and promotions, and should be very short lived as large screen, Smart TV and 4K all have underlying growth. Photo continues its struggles as compact fixed lens cameras decline further, with entry-level cameras seemingly unable to compete with the impact of smartphone cameras. In IT, media-tablets, while only around a few short years, drag the market down as high ownership levels and lower priced, smaller screen versions impact on the value also. So what does the second half of the year hold? For the most part it will be more of the same, with the possible exception of TV. Major appliances should continue to grow, possibly at a slightly slower rate. Improvements in the housing market can also help here. Small appliances should maintain the strong performance of the key categories, particularly in Q4 as gifting purchases kick in. Consumer electronics should return to growth as non-TV categories, such as connected audio systems, headphones and soundbars, have great potential. For TV itself, there is growing demand for large screen (50+) as consumers trade up, while 4K and curved screens provide an opportunity for a high-value sale. The Rugby World Cup will also provide great opportunities for Q3. With high expectation of the Irish rugby team to progress in the tournament, as well as the proximity of the event, and favourable game times, this could be a key sales driver for TV, and quickly reverse the poor June performance. In IT, media-tablet volumes may continue to decline, but new product launches, possibly including larger screens, could slow this, as well as boosting average transaction price. The only other unknown is how Black Friday will impact. After arriving to Ireland last year, it is an event that is likely here to stay, so it will be interesting to see how the industry approaches it this year. Does it just bring sales forward from early December? That seemed to be the case last year. Will that be repeated this year, or is it possible to use it to kickstart sales, rather than cannibalise them? Time will tell.

12

Consumer Electronics After a good year for consumer electronics sales in 2014, with excellent sales of Flat TVs in spring and summer thanks to the soccer World Cup and the arrival locally of Black Friday at the end of November, the performance in 1H2015 was much more muted. A good performance in January faded away and comparisons with 2014 became more discouraging as the year progressed culminating in an 11% value decline in June. This was despite good growth of the largest TV screen sizes that were both Smart and increasingly blessed with 4K. While this is a large decline, it is typical of a post soccer World Cup year, and should be short-lived as we pass the anniversary of this event. Soundbars performed well, while DVD/Blu-ray and set-top boxes continued to suffer, so retailers were indebted to the wide range of successful audio products on offer, especially relatively new Bluetoothenabled connected audio systems and the longer established but still growing network music systems, while portable radio sales were up and the radio boombox appears to have gained a new lease of life in its modern configuration. Looking to the second half of the year, the key products will inevitably be those already referred to above, with the likely star-performing products being large screen 4K and smart TVs, and connected audio systems. The Rugby World Cup will also provide additional opportunities for TV sales in Q3, particularly given the expectation levels and favourable match times.

Major Domestic Appliances The major domestic appliances market continued its resurgence with value sales almost reaching â‚Ź101 million for the current year-to-date to June, up 3% on last year. This is the highest level of sales for the first half of the year since 2009. Volume growth exceeds the value uplift slightly, with unit sales rising 4% as more consumers return to the market following years of recession and economic hardship. Since the start of

ier ¡Retail

GfK Update

the year we have seen that price declines have slowed down, and are flat for the current YTD, suggesting that subsequent value sales may soon be given a boost as consumers begin the trade-up process toward more premium products, helping prices to rise. The two largest categories, washing machines and cooling, have already seen strong growth for premium products this year. Side-byside fridge-freezers and washers with larger drum sizes (9kg+) have recorded double-digit growth. Another factor boosting these two key markets is a greater uptake of built-in appliances. The built-in sector overall is up 8%, driven by 31% growth for built-in cooling products and 21% growth for washing machines. Ovens remain the largest built-in category and have also seen a modest uplift of 4% versus last year.

The strong growth of these larger, more premium and aspirational product types indicates that 2015 should be another successful year for major domestic appliances, especially if we continue to see improvements in the residential property market.

Small Domestic Appliances The small domestic appliances market has been fairly flat in terms of volume showing a growth of just 0.4% in the first six months of 2015, but value has been far more impressive rising to over €52 million, a growth of 14%. The best performing categories are food preparation, hot beverage makers and vacuum cleaners, while areas of personal care such as hair dryers and stylers suffer double-digit declines. Within food preparation, the main growth driver is liquidisers, which has seen value sales rise by a huge 244%, with models with a take-away

cup giving the category a boost. This type of product is marketed as perfect for creating smoothies and nutritional drinks with the added convenience of putting a lid on and taking it with you. Promotional activity has fueled the growth of hot beverage makers with average prices falling to €104. This has helped lift sales of single-serve coffee machines as well as the more traditional espresso machines. Outside of the kitchen, value of the vacuum cleaner market has risen by 15%, pushed on by the success of handsticks. These lightweight models come with an average price tag of €295, a whopping €138 more premium than the market average. This cordless sector has recorded a rise of 142% in volume and 162% in value. Many of these ‘hero’ products that have influenced much of the first half year’s growth also make great Christmas gifts so we can expect these developments to continue into the second half of the year.

Digital Cameras The ever-changing landscape of digital cameras continues to surprise in some aspects, and continues to disappoint in others. Standard compact cameras continue to struggle, with value half of what it was against 1H2014. Some segments have bucked this trend, however, such as Bridge, which saw volume up 8% due to promotional activity, in the same period, and Superzoom, which grew in value terms. But what about other camera segments? Action/Adventure photography is certainly a growing area, but is it better suited to tough cameras or action cams? For tough cameras, some of its key features are the fact that it is shockproof and waterproof, so it has a fairly narrow target audience. For a camera with a niche target group, the segment has struggled to find its feet in recent years as it dips in and out of growth, rarely experiencing growth for more than two consecutive months. The main problem for this segment that makes it somewhat unique is that its competition is action cameras, more so than your traditional digital still camera. Tough cameras have not managed positive value growth this year, averaging -36%, while action cams have enjoyed a lot of it, with tripledigit growth of 129% in 1H2015. What action camera brands have done is identified with this target audience very well. They allow you to record all your adventures in full HD/4K and, if it is a premium model, take highresolution still images too. The key to tough cameras becoming more resistant to the pressures from action cameras is features combined with affordability. In 1H2014 the price premium of an action cam over a tough camera was €116. In 1H2015 the premium was €70. Prices are eroding much quicker in the action camera market as more models get released by new brands entering the market, and this affordability is eating into tough cameras’ share. Ensuring the product remains feature-heavy is key to maintaining its role away from action cameras. When launching this year’s models, a focus needs to be on tough

ier·Retail

cameras providing high-quality still images. 4k action cams saw volume grow 126% in 1H2015 as people are willing to pay premium prices for high-quality images. Wi-fi connectivity is another feature that the tough segment has to continue to build on. The ease of uploading on to platforms such as Instagram, Facebook and other blogging sites seems to be a big draw factor. Combining these key features and keeping affordability in check in comparison with action cameras will give tough cameras an opportunity to develop. Otherwise, action cams will consume this segment and reduce still camera opportunities further.

IT In 1H2015 the traditional PC market, which excludes media-tablets, has grown by 22% in sales volume. The consistent lowering of prices has played a significant role across the majority of form factor in stimulating demand, as on average prices dropped by 14% per unit sold versus last year. The notebooks segment, which continues to account for three quarters of all PC devices sold so far this year, experienced a 14% volume growth, adding more units to the market in that time than the current entire desktops market volume. Price erosion for notebooks was a significant factor in maintaining volume growth, with average prices down by 11% compared to 1H2014, the equivalent of €62 per unit. Other mobile computing segments comprise media-books (10” Windows devices and Chromebooks) and computing tablets. Both of these markets continue to compete via price erosion to combat notebooks. Media-books average prices have declined €37 per unit, resulting in a volume growth of 36%. Computing tablets have dropped in price by 45% (or €249 per unit), which has led to 144% growth versus the same time last year. The desk computing sector of traditional desktops and All-In-One computers grew in 1H2015 by 16%, solely driven by AIO, which was up 57% in volume compared to a traditional desktops decline of -0.5%. Once again, lower selling prices was a key factor in the AIO segment growth, with an average price decline of 12% compared to 1H2014, equal to €121 per unit. Traditional desktops did not have the same level of price erosion compared to other PC types at -4% (€20 per unit), leading to a slowdown in demand that had a direct negative impact on category performance, down by 0.5% versus 1H2014. Media-tablets saturation continues in the market and now consistently registers between -20% and -25% down per month. As a result, 1H2015 market volume is down by 25%. Average price declines for mediatablets have slowed, to only 5% compared to 1H2014 - a modest decline of €12 per unit. These two factors of market saturation and continuously lower average prices have led to a market value decline of 29% in the year-to-date.

Brian McMenamin, BSH Home Appliances Since 1st January 2015 BSH Home Appliances, which last year became a wholly owned subsidiary of the Bosch Group, has been marketing the Bosch, Neff and Siemens brands of appliances from new showrooms and offices in Ballymount, Dublin 12, where IER-Retail met Brian McMenamin, General Manager.

David Kirby, Heather Butcher and Brian McMenamin in the new BSH Home Appliances showroom.

While Origo and KAL continue to be distributors of Bosch and Neff products respectively, BSH Home Appliances’ 15-strong sales, marketing and training team are now jointly promoting the Bosch, Neff and Siemens brands from the company’s new 600 sq m showroom and offices in the M50 Business Park, Ballymount, Dublin 12, which is also the new base for 12 service engineers and five administration staff. Brian McMenamin, General Manager, told IER-Retail: “The location was a prime factor in our choice of new premises, which had to be easy for our retailers and their customers to find and access, so

15

just inside the M50 was the ideal. Situated at the M50/Ballymount interchange (junction 10), the M50 Business Park is approximately 12km from Dublin city centre and provides exceptional access to the M50 ring road motorway, to the airport and all routes to the provinces, while Kingswood station on the Luas Red Line is also close by. “Secondly, the building had to reflect the company’s emphasis on innovation and modern styling, using steel, glass and chrome for example, so a car showroom, which is what the building was previously, is also ideal. “The purpose of the new showroom is two-fold: firstly, to be an extension of our retailers’ own showrooms, and some visitors to date, including Euronics and Expert members, have seen product that they have chosen to add to their own displays, and secondly, to highlight the principle features of each of the three brands and how they complement each other. “The Neff brand is the first to be seen on entering and is the ‘home of the cookaholics’, those who are passionate about food, ingredients and cooking, and includes a presentation of integrated appliances. We align with cookery schools such as Ballymalloe House, which is 75% Neff, and Ballinacurra House in Kinsale, which is 100% Neff.

“Next comes Siemens, in which technology comes to the fore in, for example, the iQ700 built-in appliance range, sensor-controlled iSensoric technology for an intelligent home, and flexInduction for maximum flexibility when using the hob. “Finally we have Bosch, which is ‘Invented for Life’ with quality German engineering with features including the eco-friendly and faster VarioSpeed dishwasher for the same performance wash, VarioPerfect washing machines and dishwashers, and Athlet cordless vacuum cleaners. “A display of built-in appliances demonstrates the various options, such as linear or tower arrangements, and single, double or multifunction oven options, while the presentation of hobs includes ceramic, induction and gas options, with drawers showing all those options in 60cm, 80cm and 90cm models. “In addition, many of the innovations in BSH appliances benefit from being clearly explained or demonstrated to consumers, either on retail shop floors or here in our showrooms, so we run weekly presentations for each brand here in the showroom, for prepurchase and post-purchase groups. Early next year we will open a training room upstairs (and wheelchair accessible) to provide training sessions on freestanding and built-in appliances. “There are about 1,500 products across the three brands, with all of those available in the UK also available here in Ireland, and an order before 12.00 noon on a Monday will be fulfilled by Caulfields on the Wednesday. “The new BSH showroom demonstrates our long-term commitment to the Irish market. Perhaps it is still a little too early to judge its performance, but we have had a successful start!”

Impressive First-Year Performance for Bauknecht “Having been launched last summer, the Bauknecht brand has enjoyed an impressive debut year in the Irish market,” Richard Broderick, Managing Director, KAL Group, told IER-Retail. “We are very pleased with the market response to date, although it has not been a surprise. It has been very positive in some quarters and quite cautious in others. Overall, we are very pleased that a number of leading and progressive retailers have embraced it very quickly, and I am delighted to say that we now have over 100 displaying dealers. “Obviously some retailers have adopted a wait-and-see Richard Broderick, policy but, over time, we are Managing Director, KAL Group confident that the quality and attractiveness of the Bauknecht brand will be recognised across the board and then everyone will join in.” "Launching any new brand, particularly in an already crowded home appliance market, is a risky venture, but KAL’s extensive groundwork in advance of Bauknecht’s launch in Ireland, allied with the brand’s international heritage and reputation, ensured that confidence was high. “Prior to the launch of Bauknecht on the Irish market, there was nothing to compare it to. Not only does the brand offer excellent value for money but it boasts top-of-the-range specification and, indicative of our confidence in Bauknecht, a three-year warranty on parts and labour. “The key factors behind Bauknecht’s success in the Irish market to date are various. People love the styling and like the fact that it is new. They are also attracted by the strong advertising and see it as an appropriate brand when upgrading or modernising their kitchens. On a practical level, there is also the three-year parts and labour warranty, which is very attractive for consumers.”

Richard Broderick, Managing Director, KAL Group; Fergus Johnston, Managing Director, Whirlpool Ireland; and Bauknecht Brand Ambassador, Kevin Thornton of the award-winning Thornton’s Restaurant

Bauknecht dedicated display area in the KAL showroom

Brand Ambassador Broderick also points to the success of having a high-profile brand ambassador (Michelin-starred chef Kevin Thornton) who has provided a huge fillip to efforts to establish the Bauknecht brand in Ireland. As Bauknecht approaches its one-year anniversary since its launch in Ireland, Richard Broderick and his team are pleased with its initial success. They are not content to rest on their laurels, however, and aim to build on its early success. “We are extremely pleased with how the first year has gone and the level of distribution that we have achieved, and we are highly confident that Bauknecht will go from strength to strength in the Irish market. We have had lots of very positive feedback coming into the business, even from competitors, complimenting us on the display and point-of-sale, so that is very positive. People are talking about Bauknecht and commenting on it, and all very favourably.”

With new appliances coming on stream over the coming months, including a double oven, confidence is high for Bauknecht’s early momentum to continue. “We have ensured that we have all the building blocks in place to maintain and build on the growth to date, and are very confident that we will achieve our targets for 2015,” concluded Broderick.

Ian Collins, Commercial Director - Ireland, Beko Beko, which celebrates its 25th anniversary in Ireland this year, has doubled the size of its showroom in Clonee, Co Meath, to extensively feature the Beko and Grundig brands. Ian Collins, Commercial Director Ireland, told IER-Retail that “all will be revealed” during the trade show.

“Our new Beko logo will be on the building, there will be a new entrance area and a bright new showroom that will have doubled in size. In addition to new built-in product displays for the Beko, Grundig and Blomberg brands there will be strategically placed island displays, along with some seating areas from which visitors can view looped product promotion videos. “The timber floor will convert into a tiled floor in a kitchen zone with a fully working kitchen.

Five Brands

Beko Showroom Entrance Area

“Beko is a subsidiary of the Arçelik Group, which was established 60 years ago in 1955 and is the third largest household appliances producer in Europe and the leading brand in Turkey. Beko manufactures extensive and innovative product ranges of home appliances, built-in and freestanding, and, because ‘Life is Ever Changing’, we have a product to suit every lifestyle, including a new washer dryer. “The well-known German brand Grundig has a 65 years heritage and has been successful with its range of televisions and audio products, available in many countries across Europe. We are now re-introducing the brand into the Irish market with built-in domestic appliances. “Leisure, which has a history of over 120 years manufacturing the highest quality range cookers, has a new A La Carte collection and Cookmaster and Cuisinemaster models available in a new ‘family’ of sizes: 110cm, 100cm and now 90cm (which all have 2014 GHI accreditation) plus a 60cm Gourmet model. “Blomberg, a brand exclusive to the Euronics group in Ireland, has over 125 years of production and expertise in the appliance industry and is recognised as a German quality brand in home appliances. “Flavel, which we use as a strategic brand, offers freestanding and built-in appliances that combine a high level of functionality with quality and affordability.

Reevoo Reviews “Beko appliances have achieved an average of 9 out of 10 review score from thousands of customer reviews on Reevoo for our range of American-style fridge-freezers, built-in ovens, washing machines and dishwashers, while our parent company has been awarded with ISO 50001 certification for energy management and is the first home appliance company to receive Gold Certificate and Platinum Certificate for its energy-efficient factories, eight for Gold and four for Platinum. “We are also proud to be the official Home Appliance Partner of FC Barcelona, since June 2014, and first team players have been the stars of Beko’s new advertising campaign this year.

Cash-Back Promotion “In Ireland we were back on RTE television for May-June and have seen an uplift in sales figures on last year, and we will be launching a sixweek cash-back promotion in September-October offering up to €200 off side-by-side refrigeration. “We have also invested a lot in digital media and our popular star Aggie will again be on TV3 with Beko promotions. “Finally, we are very pleased to have teamed up with Barnados as our Charity Partner, to whom we will be making monetary and product donations totalling around €10,000 over the next 12 months.”

interview

Johnny Dunne, Chairman, White Goods Association “Retailers are thinking more strategically now and if they have survived the past five years I expect they will survive the next five!” Johnny Dunne, Chairman of the White Goods Association, told IER-Retail.

Our interview in Dimpco’s headquarters in Cloghran, Co Dublin, where the company will be introducing the premium Britannia brand during the trade show in addition to its existing Belling and New World brands, came soon after the figures for white goods sales in the January - June half year had been released. “The figures, while excluding Argos, Currys and Samsung, include 87% of the total market in white goods, so they give a very accurate account of deliveries by suppliers. For the January - June 2015 period they show an increase of 10%, while range cookers even recorded a 41%

PAS 141 PAS 141 is the EU standard for the treatment process of WEEE/Used EEE re-use, and forms a key part of the system for preparation of re-use of WEEE in Ireland, including the approval of preparing for re-use organisations. The specification was developed to improve standards for the re-use and refurbishment of discarded electrical and electronic equipment and aims to address a demand from consumers, retailers and others for reassurance that all used equipment are electrically safe to use and functionally fit for purpose. Original producers also need re-assurance that their safety liabilities and reputation will be protected by re-use organisations using documented safety tests, removing confidential data and keeping records to demonstrate this. PAS 141 will also be used to differentiate ‘bona fide’ exports from illegal exports of WEEE under the guise of being sent abroad for reuse, by providing assurance that appropriate testing of equipment has taken place and allowing for a certificate to act as proof that products are genuinely for re-use.

20

increase. Built-in, which comprised 37% of the market by volume, which was up from 34%, saw value increase by 19%, while freestanding was up by 6.5%, in which laundry was up by 5%. “Yes, the 10% overall increase does differ from GfK’s 4% but that is easily explained. The latter figure is for sell-out from electrical retailers whereas the 10% is not only for sell-in but also includes sales through the kitchen channel and sales to builders, to whom many NAMA contracts have been diverted, and there was heavy buying by electrical dealers due to discounts being offered in April/May. Much of this product has yet to be sold on by retailers, so I expect the GfK figures to come more in line with ours in the next few months. This also explains the overall figure for June falling back by 1%, but again I am confident that subsequent months will revert to increases. “There may be 12,000 new houses built this year, but that will only be a small increase on 11,000 last year and a long way short of the 93,400 built in the peak year of 2006. The main activity currently is in RMI (repair, maintenance and improvement) projects and white goods sales are benefitting from new kitchens, albeit that the VAT rebates under the Home Renovation Incentive Scheme apply to the kitchen rather than the appliances. “In addition, we have been moving into a period when cheaper appliances that were bought during the years of recession now need to be replaced.

WEEE and Re-use “The WGA’s work on the review of the WEEE legislation has reinforced the association’s role in speaking in one voice for the electrical industry, because we brought in all the partners into the discussions, suppliers and retailers. “The revised system is working well with recycled tonnage up significantly, so I think the Department is pleased with the results as are retailers with the €1 million per year fund available over two years. “The WGA also proposed a list of criteria to be adopted in the recent introduction of re-use legislation on 25th May and the issues that we raised were addressed by the WEEE Register. These included public liability insurance, repairs, labelling, six-month warranties, and PAS 141 audits and annual inspections. “Legislative changes through European Directive 2012/19/EU on WEEE now oblige EU Member States to prioritise re-use at the earliest stages of WEEE take-back, separate WEEE for re-use and enable access for re-use centres or ‘approved preparing for re-use of WEEE organisations’ (currently Rehab Recycle) to collected WEEE prior to any further transfer. “In Ireland Regulation 17(3) in S.I. 149 now provides that ‘prior to any further transfer for treatment, a producer or authorised representative shall provide for the separation at their collection points of WEEE that is to be prepared for re-use from other separately collected WEEE by granting access for personnel from approved preparing for re-use of WEEE organisations that have been approved and registered by the registration body."

The interactive easy appliance finder launched on the newly designed beko.ie website this year has also proved popular with Irish consumers, helping them to choose the right home appliance and in keeping with the brand’s ongoing commitment to making life easier for Irish consumers. Unlike a traditional steam iron, the CareStyle 5 system has a large water tank integrated within a separate base unit, making the iron 30% lighter than a traditional steam iron and easier to manoeuvre. So it does not need to be refilled as often - you can keep going for two hours with a full tank - further saving time and removing any chance of accidental leakage of stale water on to clean clothes. Other features include a 10-minute iron auto-off function; powerful, even steam distribution across the whole soleplate; an iron safe rest; Easy CalcClean LED light; an eco-mode; and it is easy to carry and store. The top of the range IS5043 (SRP: €299.99) has an exclusive easy lock system, allowing you to secure and store the iron firmly and safely; the IS5042 (SRP: €269.99) also features the iCare technology and Eloxal 3D BackGlide soleplate; and the IS5022 (SRP: €229.99) includes the Eloxal 3D BackGlide soleplate and high steam performance. The Ready2Cook setting eliminates the need to pre-heat, saving time and up to 20 per cent of energy. The 600mm single multi-function oven with pyrolytic cleaning function has 16 automatic programmes operated by the central dial: just dial-in for setting programme and temperature. Programmes include: forced air convection; maxi cooking for roasting; pizza setting; bread programme; conventional for traditional recipes such as cakes; full-width turbo grill, defrost and special functions. Other features include telescopic rails for ease of use, soft closing feature, electronic child lock, stainless steel surrounding double-glazed glass door, anti-fingerprint coating, and interior light.

Microwave Oven The Absolute design microwave oven, model AMW 505IX, with 6th Sense technology has a central programmer that allows the selection of different cooking options with a single touch. Through the ‘select and cook’ function you can choose the most appropriate cooking setting for each dish, while 6th Sense technology sets the cooking time and power level for outstanding results. The microwave has a grill and, with its unique Crisp technology, will produce food that is crispier, juicier and healthier.

Haier’s new HB25FSSAAA Americanstyle fridge-freezer measures one-metre in width and has a contemporary stainless steel design and an A++ energy rating, making it one of the most energy-efficient refrigerators of its kind. Features include an electronic control panel, LED interior lighting, two cooling circuits and a completely frost-free operation, which puts and end to the chore of defrosting the fridge. Operation, meanwhile, is whisper-quiet with a maximum noise level of just 40dB.

Hob The new Absolute design 6th Sense hob’s Double Flexizone technology extends the freedom to organise the cooking area to suit individual requirements. It is designed to accommodate the largest pans by linking together the front and back zones, maintaining a consistent temperature across the whole zone. This makes it ideal for cooking large amounts of food and using numerous pots and pans all at once. If you switch to a smaller pan, the system detects after just one minute which part of the zone you are using and automatically activates it.

Hood The Absolute hood’s central chrome dial makes control easy by simply selecting the setting according to the cooking mode: simmering, boiling or frying. The hood automatically finds the ideal setting and the power of extraction only increases when needed, eliminating unnecessary energy wastage. Thanks to its 6th Sense technology and A+ energy rating, consumers can save up to 18 per cent of energy.

SoftMove technology ensures clothing care with its gentle and custom treatment of garments. The new drum keeps all garments looking like new for longer. The new drum pattern reduces friction by 70 per cent, while the drum’s speed and movement is customised for each programme. If the washing is not removed immediately after the programme ends, FreshCare continues to tumble garments for up to six hours, keeping garments feeling and smelling fresh, as well as reducing wrinkles by up to 30 per cent and therefore the need to iron.

Whirlpool Ireland - Washing

Tumble Dryers

New Supreme Care Washing Machines and Tumble Dryers Whirlpool has launched a new Supreme Care range of matching front-load washing machines (in sizes 8kg, 9kg, 10kg and 12kg) and tumble dryers (8kg, 9kg and 10kg) that claims the quietest spin cycle on the market, thanks to new ZenTechnology. Winner of a 2015 iF Design Award, the energy saving A+++ (-50%) washing machines spin at just 67 dB(A) thanks to Whirlpool’s revolutionary new direct drive motor. Direct connection to the drum results in minimum vibration and quietness that means consumers can ‘live’ with their washer in the kitchen and even run the machine overnight. PrecisionClean provides the best rinsing performance, particularly important for those with skin allergies. The powerful jet in the drum sprays pre-mixed water and detergent, or fabric softener, directly on to the clothes and delivers the lowest water consumption on the market. PrecisionDose releases the exact amount of detergent needed for every wash, saving up to 12 litres of detergent a year. The bulk dispenser accommodates detergent and fabric conditioner for up to 20 washes, so

The Supreme Care tumble dryer range guarantees drying up to four, tumble dryable, woollen jumpers ready to wear in just one hour. The dryer incorporates SoftMove technology and a new, ultra-gentle drum design reduces friction by up to 70 per cent, while the programme customises the drum movement to care for any garment from denims to woollens, ensuring they remain crease-free and softer for longer. A patented SteamCare system refreshes and releases wrinkles in garments. A special accessory is placed in the drum with the laundry, refreshing garments in less than 30 minutes. New 3DryTechnology dries gently and evenly using new three-dimensional air jets. The top of the range, Supreme Care Premium Design dryer features heat pump technology to guarantee maximum energy efficiency, with an A+++ rating. Having the biggest drum on the market, at 121 litres, the dryers offer numerous benefits including easy loading, easy access and increased space for fast, even drying. All models have design symmetry with the washing machines, with even the 10kg tumble dryer harmonising with the 12kg washing machine. A stacking kit is also available to accommodate all model combinations.

An innovative, architectural product, Up is a system that integrates into a suspended ceiling, composed of different modules for capturing air and illumination, connected to a remote motor system. The modules, which are perfectly coplanar with the suspended ceiling, allow the plaster sheet to be attached directly to the predesigned profile. The base model has a vent for perimeter aspiration and a panel of the same material as the suspended ceiling can be applied to the inside, allowing for the integration of the system. It is possible to choose another type of module, again with a vent for perimeter aspiration and with the internal part in steel or with a luminous ceiling and fluorescent lamps. The suction system is ideal for kitchens within living rooms, offering simplicity, silence and aspiration efficiency. The grease filter within the module, concealed by the material of the suspended ceiling, by the stainless steel panel or by the luminous ceiling, is removable for cleaning. In case the architectural structure prevents the possibility of installing an external motor and relative air extraction, the system can be installed in filtering mode with a recirculation vent to insert into the ceiling or in an adjoining wall. In this case, the carbon filters that are positioned above the grease filters can be dismantled and substituted easily.

New Freestanding Supreme Dual NoFrost Fridge-Freezer

Curl Revolution, Shine Therapy Wand, Reveal Facial Cleanser, Vacuum Beard Trimmer, Quick Cut Clipper and HyperFlex Golfer

Whirlpool’s new freestanding Absolute design Supreme Dual NoFrost fridge-freezer features 6th Sense FreshControl technology to preserve fresh food for longer and to avoid waste. There are two independent no frost systems: one for the fridge and one for the freezer, providing the best frost-free climate to store fresh and frozen food. Supreme Dual NoFrost ensures excellent food preservation, optimum humidity and eliminates the mixing of odours between the fridge and the freezer. The 6th Sense FreshControl technology constantly monitors temperature and humidity levels throughout the fridge compartment and restores the correct temperature five times faster after the door has been opened. A special fan also maintains optimum conditions inside the compartment. According to AITA food technology experts, the ideal fridge humidity is 70-85 per cent, exactly that guaranteed by Whirlpool’s 6th Sense FreshControl technology. As well as extending food life and reducing waste, the fridge-freezer has a clean and hygienic interior and eliminates the usual condensation water droplets or frost that visibly gathers at the back of traditional f r i d g e freezers. In addition, the freezer will keep up to speed with a full supply of ice, making ice cubes in 30 minutes, 75 per cent faster than traditional fridges. A new L E D lighting system for perfect visibility throughout comes with the bonus of energy efficiency.

Spectrum - Russell Hobbs

Legacy Collection, Aura Range and Multi Cooker

Aura Range

Toasters To celebrate the launch of the world’s first automatic electric kettle (the K1) 60 years ago in 1955 by Bill Russell and Peter Hobbs, Russell Hobbs has launched the Legacy Collection. This special edition breakfast range includes a kettle, toaster and coffee maker and is available in four colours - limited edition high shine silver (only available in 2015) and red, black and cream chrome, all with black gloss accents.

The Legacy toaster offers 55% faster toasting capability and features extra-wide slots for thicker bread, frozen, cancel, and reheat functions. As well as a range of clever functions, the Legacy toaster has a polished stainless steel housing that suits traditional and contemporary kitchens.

The new Russell Hobbs Aura range is a collection of sleek, white, multifunctional kitchen appliances that cover all bases in the kitchen. The nine-piece Aura range incorporates a premium white colour, which glows against its matt black accents to emphasise clean modern curves.

Multi Cooker A one-stop appliance that cooks the lot, the Russell Hobbs 21850 Multi Cooker is a compact size yet has a 5-litre capacity that caters for all the family’s tastes, quickly and simply. Instead of heating up a conventional oven or hob, the Multi Cooker can be set to cook a range of meat, fish and vegetable dishes. It can also be used to bake cakes, create fluffy rice and even make yoghurt. It is ideal for families on the go, if you like to cook in batches, or space is tight in your kitchen. From making perfect porridge at breakfast time or setting its slow cooker function to have a stew ready at dinner time, there is not a lot this handy cooker can’t do. It has 11 functions so it can be used for many varied recipes, from baking bread to steaming vegetables. It also has a keep warm function, an anticondensation lid cover and an easy-to-clean stainless steel housing. When it’s not in use, it’s compact enough to be tidied away inside a cupboard to keep work surfaces clutter free.

Coffee Makers Kettle The Legacy kettle’s 60th anniversary handle, as well as being visually appealing, allows ergonomic control while lifting, filling and pouring. The silver chrome kettle features a ‘6’ styled handle and a ‘0’ on the lid, a subtle but stylish incorporation of the celebration. The shape and style of the Legacy kettles stay true to the heritage of kettles gone by while incorporating modern-day technology and are speedy too.

ier·Retail

In 1952 Russell Hobbs introduced the world’s first electric coffee maker with a keep warm function. The new Legacy coffee maker uses advanced showerhead technology during the filtering process. This function showers all of the coffee grains, not just the ones in the centre of the filter, to make sure all of the coffee is used. Because more of the coffee is captured and dissolved, you enjoy a richer coffee flavour, and less waste in filter.

They are energy and water efficient and the majority of programmes take less than an hour to complete due to the innovative Vortex Wash. Nine of the 13 cycles on the premium machine, and seven of the nine cycles on the mid-range machine take less than one hour to complete at 30oC. A full load can be washed in the Everyday cycle and when there is an emergency a rush wash can be done in the Super Quick 15 cycle, which washes 2kg in 15 minutes. A garment can be added in mid-cycle. The Vortex Wash system uses the centripetal force of the spinning drum to force sudsy water through the clothes quickly and efficiently, thus shortening the length of the wash cycles. The superior stain removal technology can remove stubborn stains such as tomato soup, red wine and olive oil without any pretreatment, keeping colours and fabrics safe. The Anti-Stain Turbo 45’ programme removes 40 stains in 45 minutes, still at just 20˚C, while the Anti-Allergy programme has been awarded the Allergy UK Seal of Approval, as it uses a combination of high temperature and extra rinses to remove 99.9% of major allergens, including dust mites.

Philips’ PerfectCare pure steam generator iron enables you to iron garments without adjusting the temperature thanks to the revolutionary OptimalTEMP technology. The compact and lightweight design makes for easier storage and using only demineralised water ensures the best performance. The Advanced Smart Control Processor controls precisely the soleplate temperature and the compact ProVelocity steam engine delivers more steam for faster ironing. The innovative Philips OptimalTEMP technology guarantees no burns on all ironable fabrics. During ironing, there is no need to put the iron back on the base station; just leave the hot iron soleplate directly on the garments or cotton ironing board cover without an additional resting accessory. It will not damage any ironable garments, or the board. This makes ironing easier, with less wrist effort. The PerfectCare iron is tested and approved by independent textile expert institutes, such as DWI, IWTO and Woolmark, for its excellent ironing performance. By using the ECO mode with a reduced amount of steam, you can save energy without compromising on the ironing results. For faster ironing, switch to Turbo mode, which generates more steam.
