President’s Corner Ed Kohly- President
It looks like Porsche of West Broward (Penske) is officially opened April 4th and hope all of our GCR members will provide them with a warm welcome to our region. We hope to do a lot of joint events with our new friends off of Griffin and I-75. Our region has set another milestone this month where have broken the 2,300 total members mark and we continue to grow. Thank you for all the members who have helped steer non-members to join our great region. Not only are we growing with membership count, but also we are growing with volunteers wanting to help your/ our club grow and be the best we can be. Last month my wife and I attended the 2nd annual Das Renn Treffen all Porsche car show in Miami at the Sunset Place shops where we had over 250 Porsches
from all over South Florida and some from out of state. We also had some great GCR members who volunteered to help us in the morning with parking and other items, thank you again for all your help. GCR will continue to participate in this amazing event for years to come and I expect next year to even double in size. There were more than 250 members who attended and a lot of non-members who afterwards joined our region. I want to thank Parkhaus1 who helped organize this event and coordination with the city of South Miami. I want to extend a special thanks to my new friend Magnus Walker who took the time to speak with every Porsche enthusiast attendee on Sunday. He was truly a class act. Also last month, I attended the annual 12 hours at Sebring International raceway and
visited our PCA Porsche-Platz in which our very own Steve Kidd (Zone 12 Rep) organized and setup with PCA National. There were over 150 Porsches who took advantage of the corral parking area and we certainly have one of the best places where you can watch the race coming off Turn 1 where the cars are roaring past the PCA tent. It’s a lot fun to be with your fellow PCA members from all of the country all watching the race. This is where the Grand-Am and the ALMS racing series all race together for 12 hours of brutal driving and it always ends with an exciting finish. Later this month, we will have our 1st annual Gold Coast Classic Concours D’Elegance on April 16th at Plantation Heritage Park where all proceeds will be donated to Wounded Warrior of South Florida. This will be followed by AutoX at BB&T Center and at the end of the month our annual Stone Crabs Drive and Dine. Keep a look out for the emails. Until next month, Full Speed Ahead! Ed

old Coast Region. Have you ever thought about our region name? We are very fortunate to live on the Florida gold coast but our region is so rich with events provided to our members and supported by member volunteers that our region shines like gold. Many of our programs have been the model for many other PCA regions. I have only been involved with our region for 15 years but have seen all of our programs grow along with the implementation of several new events that were launched from the ideas of new members. Each year we continue to add to the level of activities for our members. It is nice to be involved and see how our sponsors and advertisers contribute to the success of

our club. Please review the businesses that support your club and thank them for their support by using their services. I would like to welcome two new advertisers, Treasure Coast Classics in Stuart and Porsche West Broward. Both locations are looking forward to serving the Porsche community. On April 3rd, Porsche West Broward will be opening. More details will follow in the form of an E-mail blast. They are planning several events in the future so please attend and support them. One of our members has helped our social team plan a special PCA luncheon in South Beach. Check out the menu on page 22 and race to the registration page to sign up on clubregistration.net because the event will be capped at 120 PCA members. How many PCA events do you attend
on South Beach at an up scaled restaurant with a Porsche race car parked out front? A special thanks to our photojournalist, Alberto Pugliese who attended the Rolex 24 Hours at Daytona and provided outstanding photographs and racing coverage. Alberto provided national coverage for PCA at Das Renn Treffen which we will publish later this year. I hope after reading this issue many other writers and photographers will submit their work. 99% of the time we don’t publish articles this long, most are 1 to 4 pages max, but Alberto’s coverage so outstanding that I tried to present his full story. I hope you are enjoying the year and all of our events.

The Rolex Daytona 24 Hour Race Photos and Article by Alberto Pugliese
OK, I’ll admit it, the picture with the fireworks is a fake! Meaning, it’s made of 2 pictures combined together. Why did I do that? Read on…. While I have virtually been to every Sebring 12 Hours race for the past 15 years, 2016 is the first year I managed to attend the Daytona 24 since moving to Miami in 1994. Both tracks have been major events in endurance racing for decades and have been the theater of epic battles. The Daytona 24 was first run in 1962, so this year was the 54th edition; it is as old as yours truly. For racing drivers, and car manufacturers, a victory at Daytona or Sebring is a major achievement. A victory in this type of races requires speed, 10
Die Porsche
consistency, incredible stamina and endurance, and teamwork; none of the above matters if you can’t stay out of trouble for 24 hours. The race is sponsored by Rolex, and each winner receives a brand new Rolex Daytona watch. If you have not been to Daytona it is probably difficult to grasp how huge it is. The facility and especially the grandstands have been recently upgraded, and they extend upwards several levels. From there, even with a 600 mm lens, a car is just a small portion of your frame. In fact, the oval section and the towering grandstands dominate the scene from every corner. And what a scene it is.
Kassette |
April 2016
Fans are allowed on the steeply banked track and pit road before the race starts.
Start of the race for the GT Le Mans class.
Walking around the infield allows you to get closer to the action, as you can watch the cars on both the road and oval sections. Of course you will mingle with fans, could end up in the Porsche Corral, enjoy some colorful sights, and find food and drinks. As night falls, the big Ferris wheel gets illuminated, and the rest of the track is brightly lit. Make sure to go up on the grandstands at night to watch pit stops. The racing is amazing. There are four classes of cars, Daytona Prototypes, Prototype Challenge Cars, GT Le Mans and GT Daytona. Prototype Challenge and GT Le Mans cars also participate in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. In the GT Le Mans class, the PCNA Porsches started in the lead,
followed by the BMWs, the yellow Corvettes and the Ford GT cars. The Ford GT and the BMW M6 are brand new entries in the series. As a race fan and amateur photographer, you need to learn where to be, and when, to capture and savor critical moments and views of the race. In endurance racing, this needs to consider time of day, the light, the position of the sun, and more. I had been at Daytona once before for Porsche Rennsport III, so I had some familiarity with the place. Yet, that was 2007, and track upgrades, especially to the fences, may have occurred since then. Not having media access, I viewed the race like any other spectator. April 2016

In terms of picture taking, being behind a fence seriously limits your ability to capture images, so the pictures you see here reflect that limitation. I had taken a little portable stool, about a foot high, but very often it was not high enough to clear the fence. Luckily other race fans had brought higher stools and even ladders, and I could use those at times. An exciting car and quite unique in its design is the Delta Wing, which features a very narrow front end and resembles an airplane. This year it had a very patriotic livery. The car has been racing and developing for a few years now, but this year it finally appeared to be quite competitive and was leading for several hours. Unfortunately, it crashed into another car stalled on the track and had to be retired. The # 2 Ligier JS P2 Honda was the overall winner and won the Prototype class as well. The car was fielded by the Extreme Speed Motorsports Team and driven to victory by Luis Felipe Derani, Scott Sharp, Joannes Van Overbeek, and Ed Brown. Porsche only competed in the GT classes. As you probably have read elsewhere, Porsche did not win this year. The GT Le Mans class was won by the Corvettes, which finished 1-2 separated by a whisker after 24 hours of racing.

In fact, the team allowed the drivers to duke it out and they gave spectacle during the last few laps. Porsche finished third with the PCNA #912 entry, while the #911 was delayed by mechanical trouble. Audi won the GT Daytona class, followed 3 seconds later by the Black Swan Racing Porsche #540. The brand new Ford GT was beautiful to look at, but its debut was plagued by technical problems and poor luck. Ferraris were there too, and put up a good fight. It remains a pity that the sanctioning bodies cannot find a way to have Daytona and Sebring as part of the World Championship, so that the Porsche, Audi, Peugeot and other prototypes currently racing at Le Mans could compete here as well. We would all flock to see the Porsche 919 Hybrid at Daytona and Sebring! (Continued on page 19)

So what about the fake picture? Well, I was in the grandstands when they had the fireworks, which was quite a view. As noted, cars from there would be tiny in a picture. I wanted to create an image that captured the atmosphere of night racing and showed a car in the foreground. Of course, it had to be a Porsche. So I put two images together, and here you have it. It’s a fake, but it is representative of the real scene. If you have never gone to the Daytona 24, don’t wait 22 years! Meanwhile, Sebring is next. April 2016

A Little Puddle Tech Corner : Article by Pedro P. Bonilla, Tech Editor
It’s a Monday morning at 7:30 AM and my phone rings. “Good morning”, I say ... “Good morning” says the caller... “How may I help you?” I continue ... “I just found a little puddle under my Porsche. Is that bad?” Somehow I just know it’s going to be a long week. I have to explain to the caller that there are a number of different fluids in his Porsche and that unless he gives me more information I can’t tell him if it’s harmless or not. I need to know the color, the feel and the location of the fluid before I can start to guess what it is. Let’s just list the possible fluids (in order of volume): 1- Gasoline The gas tank holds 13 - 25 Gals. You should know how gasoline looks and smells. The tank is generally located in front (except the trucks) but the fuel lines run the length of the car to the engine so a leak can occur anywhere under the car. A gasoline leak is dangerous and needs o be addressed with urgency. 2- Coolant There are approximately 6 Gals. of anti-freeze / coolant in water-cooled Porsches and not a single drop in the air cooled ones. Those that use it could have pink, neon yellow, green or any other color. It’s slippery and smells sweet. It’s also poisonous. Depending on the particular Porsche, the expansion tank could be in the rear (Carrera, Cayman and Boxster) or in the front (Cayenne Macan, Panamera). The expansion tank has a pressure cap that can leak with time. There are coolant lines running the length of the sportscars so a leak can happen anywhere. The radiators which cool down the antifreeze are up front and are prone to punctures from road debris. Some leaks are very hard to detect and require a pressure test. 3- Engine Oil There’s anywhere between 6 - 10 Qts. on normal street Porsches. When fresh it’s a dark amber color which quickly turns to dark brown or black with mileage. It’s slippery and has a distinct odor.

Die Porsche
Kassette |
April 2016
An oil leak will generally be under the engine but could come from the center (IMS or RMS) the sides (spark plug tubes or head gaskets) or from the oil pan itself (bad plug, puncture or gasket). A small leak is not necessarily an urgent fix. 4- Windshield Washer Fluid About 1 Gal. or more. It’s a light, watery fluid that can have any color dye such as blue, green, pink, etc. If the vehicle has a rear window washer it may have one long line running the length of the car or it may have a separate tank. Generally leaks are from the hoses coming from the reservoir or from the small electric pump. 5- Transmission Oil There’s close to 1 Gal. Depending on whether you have a manual or an automatic, the consistency, smell and color will vary. Automatic tranny fluid is a light oil, generally red with a strong petroleum smell, but if it overdue for replacement it’s dark brown in color and may smell burnt. Manual tranny fluid in Porsches is very viscous - much heavier than motor oil - has a deep blue or green color and smells like rotten eggs. 6- Brake/Clutch Fluid About 1 liter.A light amber colored fluid which is corrosive and will get hot when reacting with water. The most likely leaks could come from the brake caliper bleed nipples, a cracked hard brake line or a bad clutch slave cylinder. Clean any spills and then neutralize with water. 7- Battery Acid There’s about 1 Gal. A very strong and corrosive acid (sulphuric) which will burn skin. A spill can only come from the battery. Neutralize with soda.
8- Power Steering Fluid There’s less than 1 Qt. This is a light weight hydraulic oil which can be almost clear, a light amber or a light green color. It could leak from the Power Steering Pump, its lines or from the Steering Mechanism on the front axle. 9- Air Conditioning Compressor Oil About 1 Qt. Also a light weight oil with a distinct odor. When a UV dye added previously it can shine under UV light. Leaks can come from the A/C compressor, and/or it’s lines when cracked.
10- Convertible Top Hydraulic Oil About 24 Oz. Light amber color but could also have a green tint. Only on the 911 Cabriolets since Boxsters use an all-electric top. Leaks generally appear running down the rear shocks.
Not all leaks present the same urgency in repairing. Gasoline leaks are inherently a fire danger, battery acid leaks can burn the skin and corrode what it touches, brake fluid is corrosive but the urgency is in repairing this leak has to do with safety and the ability to stop the vehicle. The other fluids aren’t as crucial: Power steering leaks will cause the steering to be much heavier but the vehicle will still turn. A/C refrigerant or oil leaks will make the car uncomfortable in hot conditions and a leaky convertible top hydraulic piston won’t allow the top to be operated. For more information on leaks and more, please visit my website: www PedrosGarage.com. Happy Porsche’ing, Pedro

If you haven’t already done so, be sure to reserve your hotel room at Chateau ‘Elan (863-655-6252). Just mention “Zonefest” for the special rate of $105. If you are unable to get away for the entire weekend, you can come out for the day and sign up separately for the concours, rally or autocross. You will not be eligible for the Zonefest Full Weekend trophies but can still enjoy part of the weekend. Just go to Club Registration to register and pay for the individual events. (Although you are not eligible for Zonefest trophies, the results will be forwarded to each region should they want to include those results with their series events)
