President’s Corner Gold Coast Region (GCR) continues to “rock on” with a great array of winter events. While our northern PCA members generally put their Porsche (at least the sports cars) away when the weather turns bad,we are lucky to enjoy year around car activities....especially this time of the year. As indicated last month, February started off with club race at Sebring for the 26th annual running of the 48hours at Sebring event. If you have never been to this club race plan on going next year as either a volunteer, sponsor, spectator, autocrosser, racer or DE participant....It’s usually the weekend that follows the Daytona Rolex... in early February. One of the best ways to learn more about this event and Club racing in general is to visit the website www.48hoursatsebring.com. The next weekend was the DRT event that spanned from PBIR in Palm Beach to South Miami. While not a PCA event, DRT offered a driver education on Friday, Cars and Coffee/wine tasting on Saturday and a world class car show spanning 4 blocks on Sunday. Thanks again to the team of GCR volunteers that served as DE instructors, parking / registration assistants and concours judges. GCR also used this as an opportunity to recruit new members and bring back prior members who had drifted away and after hearing what GCR was now doing....most likely will re-join the club. Thanks to team GCR for manning the PCA table and sharing club knowledge and enthusiasm and promoting PCA juniors and other great programs. New this year was our 1st GCR valentines day dinner. All 24 attendees drove their Porsches to Galuppi’s and treated their sweetheart to great evening out. All the ladies received light up roses and everyone enjoyed great food and conversation. While Dottie served as
social chair lead, at this event, we met new members who are exciting to take on new roles as breakfast or Thursday nite social co-coordinators. February 16th was back to Carlin Park in North Palm Beach for another Picnic, car show and door prizes. The lunch was catered by Southern pig and cattle bar-b-que which provided some of the best ribs and pulled pork I’ve ever had. Thanks to Lorena and Dale for organizing another great picnic and all the helpers.... Dottie,Sherry,Peter Steve and others for their roles in making this a successful team effort. Trophies were awarded to the top 3 vote getters in the Peoples choice car show with last years winner, Tom Blash again capturing top honors with his beautiful Bali Blue 356 cab. As promised, a spectacular array of goodies were raffled off and a larger quantity of door prizes were given out to lucky ticket holders. There was even an award of cleaning supplies for the person with the least prepared Porsche....congratulations Jake. The last week end of the month was a Suncoast region DE at Sebring. Quite a few GCR members attended as students or instructors as SCR has one of the best DE programs in PCA, with over 200 drivers attending this event. Suncoast has invited us back to their next DE on May 11-12...also at Sebring. Additionally GCR and Suncoast will be partnering to hold a multi regional AutoX at Sebring on May 12 at the long concrete strip. SCR will handle registration and GCR will handle course design which should make for a great event. Speaking of autocross ,GCR will be having it’s next AX at FAU on Sunday, 3/10/19.It was a terrific effort to find and contract this site as we have never been here before and hope it works out for future AX events if we are unable to re-secure BBT as an AX site in the fall. Judging by it’s popularity (the 3/10 AX

sold out in 5 days) we can tell autoX is still alive and well in South Florida..... Got a lead on a future AX site????...Be a hero and make some inquiries and pass the info along to Steve / Dottie. The best sites are airports, sports arena parking lots or abandon shopping centers where you have an “in” to the decision maker. Any help would be appreciated if we are to keep AutoX alive in South Florida. And finally Parade....Porsche Parade registration opened on February 4th and from my informal survey, quite a few GCR members have registered and many more are very interested, but have not committed yet. For those of you that have registered, the next critical date where action is needed is April 15th, where you can sign up for activities, tours, competitive events and other parade happenings. The Parade website is very complete and informative and suggest you visit it to answer all your questions. A few new things this year...if you are registered for Parade and staying at home rather than the host hotel, there will be $5.00 parking fee per day. As I understand it ,if you are not registered for parade, but want to visit the hotel or activities like the concours, there is a $20.00 parking fee. Also we have been told that you most register for parade in order to volunteer. So yes...It costs $200 to sign up and work. Finally, please know the next parade will be in California and the one after that most likely in the mid west, so if there ever a time to take advantage of the biggest activity within PCA, this is the year to do it. Until next month.....Steve

his month we are continuing the 48 Hours at Sebring coverage by GCR photographer Alejo Menendez. The secret ingredient to this event is Volunteers, from both Gold Coast and Suncoast Regions. Paul Raben, GCR Volunteer Co-Chair has written a fantastic article to accompany the gallery of photos. The article will educate and I hope motivate you to learn more about the opportunity of becoming a volunteer for this very special club race. The region is planning more events where you can learn more about the 48 Hour experience. Stay tuned. For a second year, Dale Brundige, his
Roger Fabel- Editor
wife Lorena and our social team provided a perfect weather picnic at Carlin Park in Jupiter. These car show / picnic events have been a member special form the beginning of our club. This site located on A1A near the beach has become a favorite location that will be expanded to fill the park with more Porsches and the pavilion will be used for more activities. Just like the 48 Hour event, PCA volunteers are needed to make all of our events work so please attend and see how you can help to grow our events. The more you get involved the more you will enjoy your PCA membership.
Please check our updated calendar for new events that have been added. Flyers for two great upcoming events are just below. Both of these events will help you prepare for the upcoming Parade this summer. We also have a flyer for the Zone 12 Zonefest on page 33. Zonefest is a Parade for the region whereas the national PCA Parade in Boca is for all PCA regions. If you have not reserved you Parade seat do so now, they do sell out and you don’t want to miss a Parade in your back yard. Phase II of registration happens soon. Enjoy your Porsche and your Porsche Family, Roger

GOLD COAST REGION’S 2ND ANNUAL BARBECUE PICNIC & CAR SHOW Lorena Brundige
parks nationwide boasting a beach front restaurant serving weekend breakfasts. Along with a huge amphitheater for outdoor concerts, more than 14 acres of grass parking, and fresh ocean breezes, this turned out to be the wonderful day for a picnic. This year’s barbecue of choice was catered by South Florida’s famous barbecue experts “Southern Pig and Cattle Company” of Stuart. Southern Pig arrived with their smoker to a hungry gathering of over 150 PCA members and guests. The menu included barbecue two ways (pulled pork and baby back ribs), savory barbecue baked beans, delicious mac & cheese and home-style sweet corn bread. Plenty of ice tea, lemonade and a variety of tasty desserts were also served. The food reviews were very complimentary, the weather was beautiful and the company was fun. Steve and Dottie are always there when the club needs them. As in everything they do, they were there to offer their support every step of the way from the preparations to set up of the event. Sherry Fabel was also on hand to assist with registration and check-in. Peter provided his usual outstanding expertise in organizing and running the Car Show. As always, a big THANK YOU to our PCA volunteers who helped out at this and many other events! It is contributions like this from volunteers like you who make these events so special. This year’s People’s Choice Car Show featured the following winners:
Our sincerest thanks to our club’s
members who came out to participate in the Gold Coast Region’s 2nd Annual Barbecue Picnic & People’s Choice Car Show. Carlin Park is one of the Palm Beaches’ premier parks and as it turns out was the perfect backdrop for the world’s premier car brand that we all know well. Carlin Park is a picturesque beach front park and one of only a handful of public

People’s Choice Award Winners • First Place Tom Blash (356C) • Second Place son (993 CS4) Phil Davidson • Third Place Mike Rebmann (968 Cab) • Dirtiest Porsche Jake Kooser (911 Turbo)
Yes, there was even a “Dirtiest Car” category this year and it was won by Jake Kooser, who was happy (to say the least) about receiving his bucket prize filled with well needed car cleaning supplies. In addition to the chances at winning great prizes at this year’s car show, interesting and fun door prizes were also given out. This year, door prizes included beautifully designed PCA polo shirts, t-shirts and mugs. Raffled prizes included Porsche Design baseball hats, a Porsche Design Martini Racing coffee thermos and a Sebring 48 Hours racing jacket. Overall, it was a picture perfect day for enjoying the wonderful weather, outstanding food and light-hearted competition with all of our Gold Coast friends and family. I’m so looking forward to next year!

From the Members: PORSCHE 911 1963-1973 by Rodger Hawley The beginning for me was an Aubergine 911 Targa that a neighbor who lived across the street kept in his garage on top of a small hill. For one reason or another this particular Porsche had starting problems, normally the owner would coast down the hill, pop the clutch and bump start the engine but every once in a while this did not work and he would recruit the neighborhood kids to give him a push. On a few occasions he would actually give us a ride around the block and that is how I got hooked. The year was sometime around 1980 and I was in my early teens. At that point I was determined that my first car was going to be a Porsche 911. My first car was not a Porsche 911 because a kid with a paper route did not drive a Porsche – Porsche owners were doctors, professionals, and celebrities who could afford such things. I seem to remember my first car as a Mazda, then a VW Bug, and finally a Porsche - but not the 911 but rather a Sand Beige Porsche 912. At the time I was around 16, had very little mechanical experience, and had just paid $900 for a rust-free 912 with the engine taken apart and neatly stored in cardboard boxes all throughout the car. I remember borrowing some money from my mom, my grand-mother, and putting every dime I had into the purchase of a non-running car. Needless to say when I got it home my father was less than impressed with my purchase, he being the owner of a Chrysler New Yorker and a Jeep Wagoneer. More concerning was the fact that the engine was completely apart and I did not have the money to put it together, so I came up with the plan that I would find a Porsche repair garage and offer to work for free if they would teach me how to put my car back together. I found an independent Porsche garage owned by a man named Bobby Wallace and he liked the salary I was asking for (free!) and hired me on the spot. I was actually in a sort of heaven, it was a 10,000 square foot building, in the front a friend of Wallace was a Suzuki motorcycle dealer and in the back was about 5000 square feet where we worked on Porsches. After a year of cleaning parts, washing cars, and sweeping floors
My First Impressions
they finally decided it was time to see if I could learn how to put together my 912 engine. What they had not counted on was that for months I had been reading the factory workshop manual for 912 engine repair and I could almost recite the book by the time I actually began to work on my engine. The engine went together fine and I learned a lot by putting the engine back together with my own hands. I liked the 912, but it only had four cylinders and around 90 horsepower, what I really wanted was a six-cylinder 911 so I painted the car red, cleaned it up and sold it. Actually making money on the deal, my eyes were opened to a whole new idea, what if I could buy Porsches, fix them up, and sell them? That is another story so I will get back on track with this one. Why am I, and many others so fond of the 911 from 1963-1973? It is simple, it is the car we saw, and desired, and could not afford at the time. When you are young and dreaming of your favorite car you imagine that all your problems will be solved if somehow you could just buy that car. When I was in that state of mind I was dreaming of the Porsche 911 and the beautiful shape of the bodylines. There was nothing else like it on the road, and often these cars were in exciting colors like Guards Red, Viper Green, or Blood Orange. In the beginning most of us were not concerned about all the technical specifications of the car, it was a reaction that was felt inside from experiencing a Porsche pass you on the highway and then disappearing into the horizon, low and sleek, with a growl wailing from the exhaust pipe. Of course there are many ways that people develop an obsession for specific cars and this is only my experience, I hope that other readers will share their “first-date” with a Porsche. I feel very lucky to have actually been able to surround myself with 911’s from a very young age, even though I did not own one until I was around 20 I was working on them, got to drive them and learned many things about the cars. For me the 911 was built for a driver, a driver who wants to get from point A to point B and share the driving experience with an incredible machine. Long straights,
negotiating a sudden curve, having to hit the brakes to avoid a hazard, rain – whatever the situation the Porsche is your loyal companion ready to turn your impulse into four wheeled motion. Yes, there is a passenger seat but that only means extra weight and possibly even the distraction of conversation which takes away from the penetrating sound of air breathing into the flat six and being
combined with fuel and flame to produce those most wonderfully controlled explosions which drive this German sportcars to three times the legal speed limit. Reliving those experiences are why I still enjoy driving a Porsche and spending time with others who feel the same way is always a good time. Now that I have given you a little background to my Porsche “sickness” I would very much like to continue in the next issue some general and specific details of my favorite Porsches, the Porsche produced prior to 1974 – I call this group of 911’s from 1963-1973 “ Early 911’s”.

AUTOCROSS UPDATE
by Steve Kidd, Autocross Chair
AutoX event #2 on March 10th went off very well at the new site at FAU. Course design proved to be a challenge as did parking and staging due to size limitations, however, everything came together, and the “A-team” did a fabulous job start to finish.....no pun intended. FTD went to GCR’s Rad Delgado, driving a 2019 GT3 RS on Hoosier A-7 tires. Rad is an amazing driver and he’s GCR’s best bet for overall FTD at the Porsche Parade.....Yes, the A-team is considering various strategies to make sure GCR, as the Parade host region, takes home a fitting number of Autocross trophies. Ladies FTD went to Wendy Limroth, who continues to improve and with a little more coaching, will do very well in her class at parade. For a complete listing of results, go to the GCR website, track events, AutoX tab. I can tell you that securing the FAU site took days of work and dealing with multiple layers of bureaucracy. I can tell you also that there were 3 site visits prior to the event, and each time we went it became apparent that this site is much smaller than what we are used to and space efficiency was key. Hopefully at our next event at FAU we should be able to accommodate more spectators and visitors but still keep competitor registrations at around 60, which guarantees 8 runs. Again ...Please keep your eyes and ears open for possible AutoX sites. Without BBT, the closest good, affordable sites are 2-3 hours away, so please if you know of....and have a contact for ...a large parking lot, airport, sports venue or other large chunk of pavement please provide me with the contact person’s name and phone #, and if there is an “in” at this location. Most good AX sites are found not by dumb luck, but rather my someone knowing a site decision maker who is sympathetic to our club or event. Be a hero and help find that contact. We are reasonably certain there will be a GCR autoX at the PBIR go cart track on 4/21...and a Multi Region AutoX at Sebring with Suncoast Region on May 12th. Look for the PBIR registration to open up in late March. The May AX will require registrants to register on the Suncoast Region club registration portal. We have a backup plan in store for the April event if PBIR falls thru. Want to see how good you really are? Read below and plan to compete against the best of the best. GCR has a secret weapon this year and we are hoping to capture over all FTD at Parade….something GCR has not done for quite some time. We did grab Ladies FTD about 8 years ago thanks to Barbara Beecher. Parade AutoX July 24th and 25th at the PBIR Racetrack ...Yes the Porsche Parade is coming to Boca Raton and the Parade autox will be held on the track...yes there will be cones and appropriate safeguards, but I envision a fast course that will not be hard to follow. This is where the best of the best compete, and you must register for the Parade and sign up for the Auto X on line, most likely on April 15th. Last year the Parade fee was $200. per couple and the AutoX was $35.00 per person. The Modified, Improved and Production classes most likely will run on Wednesday and the Stock classes on Thursday, but that could change News, reminders and 2019 updates: • Everyone is now required to pre-register for any AutoX on Clubregistration.net… Please consult the GCR website and Kassette for all Autocross photos & results. • Porsche classes are loosely based on the PCR’s for medium size regions, with minor regional adjustments. The major difference will be the addition of SN (stock car/novice driver) for men and ladies. These classes are strictly for newcomers only. Please see Steve for any car class questions or if you wish to run as a novice. We reserve the right to make additional class/rule changes as needed. • Our 2019 series is planned to be 7 events. To be eligible for an end of the year award, competitors must run in at least 4 events in the same class. Each competitor’s top 4 finishes will be calculated and an end of the year class champion and possibly runner-up (depending on class size) will be chosen. In case of a tie, additional events will be added until the tie is broken. Year-end class champion awards will be presented. • No passengers except for an approved AX instructor driving or in the car instructing. • Questions…..call Steve or Dottie Kidd 954-946-3196 • For 2019 our advice is please register early. As a reward, early registrants will get the best price. However, those registering the last week before the event will see an increase in event registration price. While we typically do not allow on-site registration, if we do, your registration fee will increase to a minimum of $55.The best advice is to register early, as some events do have caps and we charge a premium fee if you register 1 week or less from the event date.

WHAT IT’S LIKE VOLUNTEERING FOR THE 48 HOURS AT SEBRING Paul Raben, volunteer co-chair Volunteers are the backbone of PCA. As simple as volunteering sounds, there is no club, no events, no track days, no Porsche Parade and certainly no event as big as the 48 Hours at Sebring without volunteers. Gold Coast Region and Suncoast Region are the hosts of the 48 Hours at Sebring event and in turn are responsible for organizing every facet of the five days at the track. Besides the committee members from both regions and the people from National we need around 180 members to give their time to assist with the many positions that need to be filled. The types of jobs available are grid, registration, traffic and parking, tech tent, timing and scoring, pit marshal, corner worker and miscellaneous positions. 48 Hours at Sebring is the largest Club Race in the country, if you have volunteered in the past you know how exciting it is to be a part of all the action. If you haven’t, then it is time for you to think about signing up for next year’s 48 Hours. The benefits you receive by volunteering far outweigh the time you spend volunteering for 48 Hours at Sebring. The excitement of the cars on the track, seeing the work being done getting the cars ready, meeting all the great people involved and knowing you are part of this well oiled machine, will stay with you for a long
time. And you can get that feeling year after year by volunteering again and again as many do. As the volunteer co-chair it is my job to organize the people that sign up and encourage those of you wondering what is involved to take the leap and join the team. Because we need volunteers for four days, you can volunteer for as much or as little as you are comfortable with. But most of you will at least put in a full day’s work which can be at a couple of different positions, for example you can work tech in the morning and timing and scoring or grid in the afternoon. A hundred plus race teams and
individuals bring hundreds of Porsches out to Sebring. Along with that comes all the support people and their transports, the shops on wheels, canopies to cover their cars and work areas and all the parts needed to keep the cars running through the four days. Also there is an assortment of vendors along the main road. It is really an amazing sight to see and hear, all the different types and colors of Porsches being prepped waiting for the track to go hot. There are also a few non-Porsche cars out there to get time on the track. And you can be a part of all this when you sign up to be volunteer. The 48 Hours at Sebring website
opens for volunteer sign up in late November. When you go to the site you can see the descriptions of all the jobs available along with the days and shifts that need to be filled. Once you decide what you want to do you fill out the required information and you get ready for the trip to Sebring. When you arrive at the track the first thing you do is check in at the gatehouse. Once you have done that you head to the Gallery of Legends building and sign in with Sherry Fabel to get instructions, your t-shirt and lunch tickets. As a volunteer you are provided with a nice luncheon (not boxed) every day you are working at the track. Okay so you are at the track, you have signed in, you got your t-shirt and lunch ticket where do you go? Besides
myself there are plenty of people around to get you started. Also, most positions are a short walk from the GOL and any that aren’t you will be taken there by Porsche SUV or a golf cart. What hits you as you get ready to work is the noise of the cars and all people moving around, so be alert as the race cars are moving off and onto the track constantly. When you have time during a break you should go trackside when cars are running to see why everyone is there either as a driver, support personnel or a volunteer like yourself. The 48 Hours at Sebring is not open to the general public so the only way you can see these races is by being part of the event itself. If you are at the track on Friday
after the last race is over and things have settled down you will want to stick around for the Speed Showcase. This is where the drivers, vendors, sponsors all get together for food and drinks to talk and see the vendors products. As a volunteer you are also invited to join everyone for this really fun evening with the bonus of a chance to win a door prize. There isn’t too much more I can say to entice you to sign up when 48 Hours rolls around again other than to let you know you are missing out on a great chance to be a part of a big, fun and exciting Porsche event put on by PCA. This is your club after all! For more information about the race go to http:// www.48hoursatsebring.com/
