President’s Corner Steve Kidd - President

February 2020... was another example of why we love our Porsches and winter in South Florida. Historically one of GCR’s most active months, this February was no exception, with activities just about every weekend...Here’s a recap of what we did and the fun we had. Feb. 1st and 2nd The last 2 days of the 48 hours at Sebring Club Race, which included the AutoX on Saturday and the Enduro race on Sunday along with lots of other races and sessions. There will be lots more coverage on this event, but if you missed it please try to make it next year. It’s always the first weekend in February and offers plenty to see and do without all the cost of the IMSA races... and it’s pure Porsche. Feb. 6-9th DRT was back bigger and better than previous years. While DRT is not a PCA event, it’s another event that attracts Porsches from all over the country and has something for everyone. This year DRT had a 2 Day DE at Homestead on Feb. 6-7. While the format is different than many PCA events, it gave a large number of drivers the chance to exercise their Porches on a race track in a controlled environment. From Lead / Follow to advanced sessions, everyone got plenty of track time and enjoyed a social / vendor component when not driving. A huge thanks to all the PCA members who served as instructors or helped with the DE. Saturday morning offered a Cars and Coffee at the Collection for event participants, while the evening offered a VIP cocktail party near the site of the Sunday big event. I say big event because the Sunday car show/ concours was spectacular both in terms of quantity and quality of Porsches lining the streets of Sunset Place in south Miami. I served on the team of judges, along with Fred

Kohly who chaired the concours and can report that the competition was amazing. Rare and exotic Porsches along with well preserved and modified cars everywhere. Check the DRT website for results and photos. GCR members assisted in many areas on Sunday but the crown jewel of our GCR effort was a PCA Hospitality Tent set up with all the other vendors at ground zero. The PCA hospitality tent was a concentrated effort to recruit Porsche owners who are not PCA members and to sign up children of PCA members as PCA Juniors. Dottie Kidd did the lion’s share of work and manned the tent most of the day with help from Steve, Carolynn, Christy and several others. By all measures, the effort was a huge success with over 500 members or Porsche owners stopping by and registering for a chance to win our basket of goodies, and picking up swag and information about PCA/ Gold Coast Region. BTW our small staff signed up 48 new PCA Juniors, over 50 new members, and answered lots of questions. Thanks to Alvaro and Yordi for providing the space and welcoming us to be a part of the team. Feb. 14th and 16th ...48 GCR members celebrated Valentine’s Day in style at Galuppis in Pompano Beach. Our group had a semi private area overlooking the golf course with great food and fabulous company. Thanks again to Dottie Kidd for playing cupid and bringing these Porsche couples together for a wonderful evening. On Sunday, Feb. 16, over 120 members spent the day at Carlin Park in Jupiter for a car show, camaraderie, door prizes, peoples choice awards for the 3 nicest Porsche (and also the dirtiest car) as well as some great Bar-B-Q catered by Southern Pig and Cattle. A big thanks to Dale and Lorena Brundige and their team for making this a great event.

Feb 22-23... A good number of GCR members were back at Sebring Racetrack to participate in a Suncoast Region DE. Suncoast Region offers 7 DE’s at Sebring in 2020 and GCR members are always invited to share the fun..... but register early as their events fill up quickly. Register on the Suncoast portal on Clubregistration.net. Additionally, GCR’s AutoX #2 was held at Sebring on the long concrete strip on Saturday Feb.22. When doing Autox at Sebring we generally get lots of runs (in this case 10) and have a nice grippy concrete surface as well as an opportunity to do touring laps on Sebring Racetrack during the lunch break. Again...Thanks to Suncoast Region for providing the AutoX site and to the small number of regulars that help Dottie and I offer such a great AutoX program. Also presented at event # 2 were the trophies for the 2019 AX series champions. Congratulations to all the winners and thanks for supporting our AX program! I’m repeating a prior message because it’s really important... we are still looking for a Community Service Project...not to be confused with our charity efforts such as Joe DiMaggio Hospital. At Parade 2019, this is one of the most distinguished awards and focus seems to be more on helping those in need directly rather than collecting cash donations.... Lots of rewarding sweat equity. Got an idea in mind.?...Give Steve a call...954 946-3196...Also we’re still looking for a new AutoX site. Not just a suggestion... someone with an “in” or knows the decision maker at the property. Looks like BBT may not be back for 2020 so any help will be appreciated. See you at an event soon.........Steve

Editor’s Notes Wow, what kind of article do I write when the world if faced with a global virus attack? What PCA content do we publish when all of our events are being canceled? Luckily I see the glass as half full and try to see the positive in all things learning from each experience. We can only pray that the outcome will be positive and our lives will be back to normal soon. We have seen similar events in the past and we are stronger after each event. During the 48 Hours at Sebring one of the GCR volunteers enjoyed the event so much that he sent an article about his experience. The article was one of the top articles I have received but was too long for the Kassette. Well guess what, with the cancelation of events I was able to print

Roger Fabel- Editor

his article. I hope you enjoy the article and that you are encouraged to volunteer for next years 48 Hour club race. Along with the article we have several photos from the official event photographer Alejo Menendez who is also a GCR member and great photographer. All of his work can be seen on the web at https://clubracingphotos.smugmug.com. If you would like to purchase any of the photos, apply the following PCA member discount code: 20OFFPCA2020. Thanks Mark for the great article and thanks to Alejo for his long time support to the club. We had a full plate of events planned for April that will be rescheduled for a later date. Let’s hope the window opens soon.

The calendar reflects the dates in red that we know are canceled along with our Thursday night socials and Pancakes and Porsches. Please watch your e-mail for real time notification. As always if you have Porsche related articles, they are always welcome. DRIVERS EDUCATION IS BACK. Please check out the upcoming GCR PCA DE coming up in June at Homestead on pages 34-35. We have missed our strong DE program from when it was the gold standard for PCA and we are hoping that we can restart the program. Track rental is very expensive but with your support we can start providing the DE experience that our members have enjoyed in the past. Enjoy your Porsche, Roger

A Rookies Trip to the 48 Hours at Sebring As a fairly new Porsche owner I have been looking to get a bit more involved with the PCA and Gold Coast Porsche Club. I’ve made a couple Porsche ‘n Pancakes at Rob’s Bageland in Coral Springs, and an Autocross in Fort Myers last fall, but that’s it. I’ve enjoyed auto racing, especially road racing for years, so when the 48 Hours at Sebring popped on the radar for the last weekend in January, actually the first weekend in February, I decided to make a road trip to Sebring. It was going to be a great drive in the car, a race/photo weekend, and the chance to work a corner for the racing, with a bonus of meeting a few of the members expected to be in attendance – even driving.

Day 1

It’s Friday morning January 31st, and

10

Die Porsche

I’m pulling together camera gear, clothing, breakfast, and making a side trip to West Marine. The trip to West is for a wet weather rain jacket, as a full day of the wet stuff is planned for Saturday at Sebring. The car was prepped the night before with a new battery, and a quick wash. I hadpurchased my first Porsche a few months earlier, and this was going to be my first trip to the track for the 2020 edition of the 48 Hours at Sebring, in my car - a 1995 Carrera Cabrio. Due to the unexpected side trip to the boat store, I was a bit late leaving south Florida, Parkland to be somewhat precise, but finally on the road. The first leg was a 40-minute jaunt in medium traffic up the Ronald Regan Turnpike to the Beeline exit. The second leg was up the Beeline to Okeechobee, with the first half on a nice

by Mark Johnson, GCR volunteer lightly traveled 4-lane, past Palm Beach International Raceway (Moroso for those who have known the track in its earlier days). After reaching Indiantown, the road narrows to a 2 lane with a couple of passing areas, but for the most part it’s 2 lane and you need to pass a few trucks, a mini-van, and a pickup or two. It is truly great fun to see an open “on-coming” lane, and drop from 6 to 4th and hammer the throttle. Getting around an 18-wheeler is really no issue with the Carrera. I’ve driven the eastern route, up the east side of Big Lake O to Sebring quite a few times. Despite the passing on two lanes, it is a much nicer drive than going around the west side on US27. My opinion of course. After about 35 miles or so I’ve arrived in Okeechobee. It’s a short and slow ride through town,

before I get to hang a right, on to US 98 that will take me to the Sebring raceway. It’s roughly 29 more miles of two lanes, but it is a beautiful drive. There is very little traffic, lots of clean road, past Fort Basinger and over the Kissimmee River. And IF, you find a slower vehicle in front, pick your spot, drop the gears, and push the pedal, all what a Porsche was designed to do. Sadly, the sign for the track comes into view way too soon, but that’s all right - we came to race. I have arrived right at noon, just as the final morning run is starting. Having signed the waiver, I’m quickly over the bridge and down the paddock road. My intent is to drive to turn 7, the “hotel turn”, the hairpin. I’ve taken quite a few photos from that corner during HSR and other race events at the track. Unfortunately, the back half of the track is closed, so I am rerouted to the paddock and parking area. Back to parking, I go check in as a volunteer, and tell the folks I’ll walk to corner 7. Damn, the bridge gate is locked for the back half. So a quick hike back to the sign-in area to wait for a ride to the corner worker shack at turn 7. Roger Fabel, Die Porsche Kassette Editor, and a Gold Coast PCA director was coordinating corner worker volunteers. With a borrowed mini-van Roger transported 4 of us to the back side of the track to turns 5 and 7. Finally we were “on the track”, and right next to the action. The two SCCA corner workers at #7 were Charlie – an 18-year vet, and highly experienced working Sebring turn 7. The other fellow, Ed, was a 5-year SCCA worker and former Ohio State Trooper. After introductions, they both advised of what to do, where to stand, and what NOT to do (most important). After that, the racing was on. If you have been to any racecourse recently, it is understood that safety is paramount. Casual observers are not allowed near the track, and are usually behind a safety wall and a couple catch fences. As a corner worker, especially at a couple locations around the track, you are

damn near in the cockpit with the driver. At turn 7, the cars are no more than 6-8 feet away as they thunder to the hairpin, clipping the apex, and off in a flash. They are in your lap, and Charlie was quick to point out that on Thursday testing two cars came to #7, colliding, hitting the inside wall and moving the barrier wall toward the corner worker shack. Simply stated: PAY ATTENTION. In supporting Charlie and Ed, we would help keep track of car numbers and colors, so if an incident did occur, the race stewards could be made aware, and the requisite video film from the car could be downloaded and examined. This is Club Racing after all. Virtually everyone is on his or her own dime, and poor driving or bad behavior can get your track license suspended or pulled. The balance of the day Friday is watching, taking a few photos, and simply enjoying being so up close to the racing Porsches. It is quite a spectacle. Cars come in hot to turn 7, it is a fairly long straight to the hard left turn. Plenty of “jockeying” for inside position at the turn occurs just before the hard braking, and a few of the cars on the outside have to take the escape road, directly off the track. There was just no room to turn in to #7 so off they went. On a couple occasions, we had a car make the initial turn-in, only to lose the back end, do a 360 or 720, and end up planting corn on the outside of the

turn, in the grass. It’s a hot corner, and again, you are very close to the action. Time passes quickly, and Roger shows up to pick us up to get back to the volunteer room, sadly before the racing is done for the day. Oh, what a great day. After a quick visit at the volunteer table to return the corner worker pass, I take a walk through the car paddock. This is another simple thrill in its own right. You are in the area where cars are stored, worked on, and any of a 1000 things that need to be done before or after a race. I walked up on the KMW Motorsports trailer and tent. Kevin Wheeler and his team are there to support two cars this weekend. One of them, a 911 is up on the jacks being attended to for a minor bobble and a trip into a tire barrier. No major damage, but enough to pull all the wheels and check the suspension. The other car is a Cayman, also on jacks but having the racing slicks changed over to a wet weather set. Rain is coming in for the night and the morning qualifying and racing will be held on a wet track. Besides the work on the cars, Kevin’s team is putting up the side curtains on the tent to keep the garage area dry. With the work done for the evening, I get the opportunity to visit with the support team and a couple Porsche jockeys to chat up the day. Long after the sunsets, folks go their separate way for dinner and sleep. It will be another long day.

A Rookies Trip to the 48 Hours at Sebring DAY 2

It’s Saturday and I get to the track at 8 am. I should have been there at 7, oh well. Meeting Roger at volunteer, I find out that turn 7 has enough support volunteers, so I ask for turn 1, another great spot on the Sebring track. They are all good for different reasons, but it all gets going in T1! By the time I actually arrive at the turn to work the first group has already run morning practice. The two SCCA guys here are Ray and HJ. Ray is a local from Lake Placid, having been a turn worker at Sebring and other tracks for 10+ years. HJ is Dutch, a 20+ year SCCA, IMSA, F1, LeMans, corner and communications worker. HJ is here for a week to participate in the 48 Hrs event, to see a space launch from Kennedy, and to enjoy a winter break from Amsterdam. Both fellows are quite enjoyable, informative and willing to share their knowledge and enthusiasm. They are also quite serious about what they do. They recognize that quick and efficient action in detecting a car event and relating it to the drivers entering the corners, they can prevent a collision or worse. They share info about the various flags, always have the yellow ready! Sitting in T1 is significantly different than in turn 7. Here, there is a big straight with the entire starting group working to get to speed, find a quick line, hold their line, and get through the corner quickly to their best advantage. It is not uncommon to see 3 to 4 cars abreast entering #1, only to eventually single file out to #’s 2, 3, and 4. It is quite a sight. IN addition, we are on the outside of turn 1, at a point where visibility from the main straight is great, and at the outside apex so we can see the cars jockey for position all the way to turn 4. It’s a fast left hand bend, so you need to be on top of your game. For two days sitting in the corners, I am amazed by the talent of the professional corner teams. They have great recollec-

16

Die Porsche

tion of car numbers and colors; they are very quick with the flags if necessary. I can pick up the events, spins and such, but remembering the numbers and colors is a whole different matter. I try to practice with each passing car, but before the next Porsche gets to mid turn, I’ve already forgotten the last one. It’s wet and raining for the entire morning session. Surprisingly, we see little spins, no contact, and great driving. The absolute best start of the morning is the big GT3 Cup cars. Whoa, they are quick, fast, agile, and damn good-looking. I was very fortunate to have the Canon camera out for this start. We watched 40 or so Porsches scream to the first turn, and it was the pole position starter and the outside row 1 that really put on a show. On the pole was Frank Deganahl in a ’18 GT2 RS, grey. Outside row 1 was Leh Keen in a ’18 GT3 Cup MR, white. At the drop of the flag Keen dropped back, crossed behind Deganahl, and hammered the throttle. By the time both cars arrived at the entry to turn 1, Keen was inside door handle to door handle, with the GT2 RS. As they exited together for turn 2, they were still side-by-side no more than 6-8 inches apart. Spectacular driving, and I got it all on the camera in a 7 photo sequence, can you say schweet? The rest of the day was every bit as good, featuring a drying track and a clearing sky. Tomorrow will be clear and cool. I thanked both Ray and HJ, and packed up for the volunteer and driver dinner. It was a super prime rib, green bean, scallop potato and beer event complete with a few stories and a couple trophies awarded for the days’ racing. With the dinner and rain over, I packed it in for the night.

DAY 3

The morning dawned clear and much cooler, it was roughly 46 degrees. It portended to be a great day to be outside, watching the Porsches run. The track would be cool, clear and fast.

Apr 2020

(continued from page 11) I had such a great time at turn 1, I went back to sit and work with Ray and HJ. HJ has flagged races all over the USA and Europe. He’s done the 24 at Daytona, 12 at Sebring, Leguna Seca, LeMans, Zanvoort, Silverstone, and Goodwood among others. It is a pleasure to sit and learn from these guys, great stories and very professional. Action at turn 1 is different today. Because of the dry track, the drivers seem to want to push faster, and we see a bit more in the way of a few off surface excursions and a major spin or two. There were a couple times with vehicle debris sitting in the racing line from mild contact, so the red/yellow flag is flown, and I get to hold it. This flag is commonly thought of the “oil” flag, but it notifies the drivers of anything on the track in the line: oil, pieces, parts, glass, loose gravel or sand. It lets them know the racing surface may be compromised and traction could be lost – beware! Fortunately, nothing major at T1 occurs. Although, there are incidents in turn 7, 10, 13, 15 and 17. We see a few bent cars, some towed in on a strap, others on a flat bed. It is an expensive hobby, but incredible exhilarating at the same time. Six hours slip by quickly, and after a beautiful morning and early afternoon, it’s time to head home. Saying goodbye to all, and sincere thanks for the opportunity, I climb back into my 911, top down for the 2 hour ride home. It was an exceptional weekend of Porsches, speed, great driving (theirs and mine), and new friends made. Highway 98 is again a blast; even with a bit more Sunday drivers, and I am soon home. I can’t wait until next year. I’d guess there were 240-250 race cars, their support crews, quite a few club members working and enjoying the scene, and plenty of Porsche autos to ogle over. Does it get any better? I think not.

Event #5 Mid -Late September...Location TBA We are hoping to surprise you with a new site in Dade County Event #6 October 10th @ Sebring ...Very similar to events 2&4 Event #7 Mid to Late November ...possibly 11/28 or 29th Location TBA possibly FAU or a surprise Most of the above dates & sites are subject to change, weather and availability and factors beyond our control News, reminders and 2020 updates: • Everyone is now required to pre-register for any AutoX on Clubregistration.net… Please consult the GCR website and Kassette for all Autocross photos & results. • Porsche classes are loosely based on the PCR’s for medium size regions, with minor regional adjustments. The major difference will be the addition of SN (stock car/novice driver) for men and ladies. These classes are strictly for newcomers only. Please see Steve for any car class questions or if you wish to run as a novice. We reserve the right to make additional class/rule changes as needed. • Our 2020 series is planned to be 5-7 events, depending on site eligibility To be eligible for an end of the year award, competitors must run in over half the events in the same class. Each competitor’s top finishes will be calculated and an end of the year class champion and possibly runner-up (depending on class size) will be chosen. In case of a tie, additional events will be added until the tie is broken. Year-end class champion awards may be presented. • No passengers except for an approved AX instructor driving or in the car instructing. • Questions…..call Steve or Dottie Kidd 954-946-3196 • For 2020 our advise is please register early. As a reward, early registrants will get the best price. However, those registering the last week before the event will see an increase in event registration price. While we typically do not allow on-site registration, if we do, your registration fee will increase to $55.The best advise is to register early, as some events do have caps and we charge a premium fee if you register 1 week or less from the event date.

GCR Drivers Education is Back What is HPDE? HPDE is a High Performance Driver’s Education Program designed to allow drivers the opportunity to drive their cars in a safe environment at high speeds without the risk of getting speeding tickets! As a beginner or intermediate driver we provide you with a friendly, competent instructor who will be in the car with you to give you pointers and information to help you get around the track in a safe and fun way. It is an experience not to be missed! Is it safe? Let’s take your typical daily commute for example: How many distracted drivers do you see around you every day during your drive? Is everyone paying close attention to what is going on around them? No. Texting while driving, driving while putting on makeup or shaving and using your knee to hold the steering wheel? All of these are common things we see every single day. What if you were 100% focused on driving and everyone else around you was too? Wouldn’t that be great? That is exactly what happens at our HPDE Events. No smartphones, emails, texts, etc to distract you and you are surrounded by people who are doing the same and driving at the same experience level as you are. What about my car, can it handle track driving? All Porsche cars and in fact, most cars built today are perfectly capable of being driven at higher than highway speeds on a racetrack. Your car was thoroughly tested at the racetrack during it’s development at the factory and Porsche even offers similar track driving experiences at the Porsche Experience Centers in Atlanta and Los Angeles using cars just like yours with NO modifications. That being said, we do require that you get your car inspected prior to the event at one of the many technical inspection facilities (dealers and several trusted independent mechanics) just to check over everything in your car to make sure it is current on all maintenance, that your safety systems are working correctly, that your brakes are fresh, and that you have sufficient tread remaining on your tires. How much track time do we get, will I be out on track with everyone else at the same time?

34

Die Porsche

All drivers are categorized based on their skill level and are separated into one of 4 groups. Beginner/Novice (Green), Intermediate (Blue), Solo/Advanced (Yellow), and Instructors (Red). Each group is sent out for approximately 25 minutes at a time and we rotate each group throughout the day giving everyone the chance to get on track in their respective groups/sessions. Our format gives each driver four separate 25 minute sessions each day of the event with breaks in-between to allow you time to cool off, rehydrate, and spend time with your instructor to refine all the new skills you are learning.
