President’s Corner Despite the summer heat, lots of cool things have been happening in Gold Coast Region. First…a big round of applause to the Gold Coast members who registered to attend the Porsche Parade in Boca Raton. As I understand it, GCR has a huge Parade presence this year and the outcomes will be known soon. Thanks to our local dealers and other facilities that assisted or hosted a parade activity. The next issue of Kassette will feature some of the articles and photos from this year’s Porsche Parade. As I have said before, the last time Gold Coast was the host Region was 1968 and there is a good chance we won’t see another Porsche Parade in our area for many years. The month of June had two big events and the usual assortment of Thursday night socials/Saturday Porsche and Pancakes. The first big June event was a visit to the Gunnar Race Shop followed by lunch at Island Jacks Restaurant. An enormous thanks to Kevin Jeanette, his family and work crew for hosting the event and enlightening members with Porsche race history, personal stories and humor. The 2nd major event was a concours college designed to show you how to properly prepare your Porsche for major Concours competition such as the level seen at a Porsche Parade. Another hot topic coming up soon is GCR election of Officers and Directors for 2020. As with past years, the membership will vote on two new director positions. The two highest vote getters capture the two open Director seats, while the person with the third highest votes becomes the Alternate Director, and the person with the fourth highest votes becomes the Alternate-in-reserve. At this writing, we don’t know for sure what GCR Officer positions will be open, but in all likelihood several of the 4 Officer positions will be contested and may have multiple candidates. The next issue of Kassette will contain the photos and bios of the candidates. In addition to the proposed slate of candidates, prepared by a 3 member nomi-
nating committee, potential candidates can be nominated from the floor during our August or September Board meeting. However, there are qualifications that potential candidates must meet before their name can be placed on the final ballot. As in the past 10 years, the preferred way to vote will be by electronic means. A paper ballot can also be requested from the GCR Secretary. Steps have been taken to correct past issues such as large numbers of votes coming from 1 IP address. More information on the voting process will be provided in the days ahead. PCA National has been busy making enhancements to the website and adding new programs such as “find the Porsche” treasure hunt, initially designed for PCA Juniors at Parade, but has proved very popular with adult PCA members. Another new innovation from the National office is the ability for Region Officers to utilize a new cell phone app that allows Officers to add PCA Juniors to a membership profile, and the ability to notify the National office of potential new members immediately, as well as look up members to determine if / when their membership expires. Several of the GCR staff are using this new tool to assist members and recruit new members at non PCA events that have a large presence of Porsche owners. In looking to the future, please stay current with the calendar in the Kassette, on social media and on the website at www.goldcoastregion. org. Road trips and dine and drive type events seem to be very popular and GCR is offering at least two of these activities in

the fall. In late August a weekend drive to Sanibel, and a longer trip to the Fontana Dam area in the mountains of North Carolina in October. At this writing, the Sanibel weekend still has openings, and it is possible to just register for the Sunday boat ride and or lunch. The road trip to the North Carolina mountains will be longer due the drive up and back. The core activities will occur on Friday, Saturday and Sunday with individuals or small groups getting to and returning from the host hotel at their own pace, but this event is now closed. In closing, thanks again to all the Officers, Directors and Committee Members/Chairs for doing the great jobs that they do ….and to our new GCR members, hoping to meet you and your Porsche at one of our future events. Cheers…..Steve

Editor’s Notes While composing my notes for the Kassette I am thinking about Parade that is a couple of weeks away. I have attended three Parades so I know what is in store for one week of being with our Porsche family, helping as a volunteer to support the event, entering into the different competitions, learning form the experts at the tech sessions, watching others compete, and attending the awards banquets. For those of you that are attending their first Parade, I hope that we have provided you with some training to prepare you for this special event in our region. One of the things that I like about PCA is that members don’t mind helping other members even though they may be competing against them in an upcoming
Roger Fabel- Editor
event. Parade provides many opportunities to learn and improve your skills. At the Tampa Parade in 2003 my wife volunteered to work in hospitality and I volunteered to work at the autocross track. While working a station with our zone rep I was encouraged to get more involved with the club; four years later I became president of Gold Coast. I also became editor of the Kassette and have been publishing our club magazine for the past twelve years. I guess that is what Ruben meant when he said to get more involved. As you can see with our member count almost reaching 3000, we are rapidly growing. To meet the demand of the increasing membership we need more members to get involved and help support
our programs. Look at our 2018 calendar and compare it to the increased activity on our current calendar. Also look at the increase in the number of members on our social committee. We have room for more volunteers. If you are interested, come to an event and let one of the chairs know you would like to help with the club. We have an opening for a Porsches and Pancakes host in Palm Beach. If you are interested please contact our social chair, Dottie Kidd. If you would like to share your Parade experience thru an article I would be very thankful for your submission. We will be publishing our Parade coverage in the next issue. Roger

Gunnar Shop Tour
...an event you won’t soon forget by Steve Kidd, GCR President
On Saturday June 8th a group of over 100 PCA members and 70 beautiful Porsches visited one of the most spectacular Porsche shops/museums/collections in the world. For those that missed this opportunity, this event should remain on your bucket list until you can experience a visit to this facility. First of all, a huge thanks to Kevin and Sharon Jeannette for hosting this event and sharing their pieces of Porsche history with the club. Also on hand was daughter Jesse and the Jeanette grand-kids as well as many of Kevin’s technicians who have been with Gunnar Racing for many years. Kevin’s resume is impressive as he worked on many types of exotic or racing Porsches for some of the top teams, and later went on to open his own shop in West Palm Beach. At any given time there can be multiple exotics such as 911 RSR, 904, 906, 908, 910, 917, 959, 956, 962 , GT1, & Spiders of all types or anything else that Porsche raced. Some cars find their way to Gunnar Racing for a full ground-up restoration, while others are there for customization, refresh or returning a car to period correct status. In addition to the race cars there are early 911’s undergoing repair or concours preparations as well as an impressive collection of early VW’s. In addition to car stories, Kevin worked with many of the top drivers of yesteryear and has amazing stories to tell about such personalities as A.J. Foyt, Bob Walleck, Mark Donahue and many more. One of my favorite

stories I heard and also read about was Kevin’s quest and acquisition of a 911R....driving it ...experiencing it...and later, abet way too soon, selling it for what seemed to be a tidy profit. This car was one of only 20 built by the factory and today is worth a small fortune....hindsight is always 20-20. Kevin has a story to tell about each of the cars, some of which he owns, did own or would like to own. The history is rich, detailed and peppered with facts that few people know and can recite. The tour went through each of the buildings where every aspect of a repair or restoration is completed and then moved to the next phase. While many of the group could have stayed for hours more as Kevin answered questions and gave his perspective on the future of various models, the tour had to come to an end. After the event, most of the group headed over to Island Jacks for lunch. Island Jacks put on a great lunch with appropriately named specials like the Boxster or 911. Our thanks again to Kevin and his team for sharing this important piece of Porsche history. For those that like this sort of event, we can only do this one every 3-4 years, so next time it’s offered sign up early and enjoy. Also a big thanks to the Gold Coast region members Dottie Kidd and Carolyn Ditrichs for handling pre and on-site registration.

Tech Corner :
My Right Seat Coach
Reprinted from Aug 2017 Kassette My Dad had been a successful Gentleman Racer in his younger days and that’s why I’m passionate about racing as well. I remember riding with him to some of his races. Back then you drove your car to and from the track! I was awed by, and still remember looking at, the speedo in his car which had a max speed indication of 300 KPH. His car of choice at that time was a 1958 Mercedes Benz 300SL Roadster. He had traded in his 1954 300 SL Gullwing for the Roadster because the latter was lighter.
With his help, I got into karting at a very young age and Dad and I had a lot of fun tinkering with what was then a new fad. We modified and greatly improved the brakes, the clutch, the engine and tweaked it after every race with what we had just learned. Just before every race we would have a strategic meeting and after the race a debriefing, going over my best and worst moments of the race. I got to be pretty good at it, eventually winning two consecutive National Championships in the DR. Dad, as an engineer, studied the intricacies of 2 cycle expansion chambers and got so immersed in it that he designed and hand-made a different one for my kart for each track! But as good as that was, the times I spent together with my Dad in a car, or better

yet, in a racecar were the best. He taught me how to drive a stick by age 10. I couldn’t reach the pedals, so he built wooden extensions for me. Every time there was a chance, he would let me take the wheel and I was quite experienced by age 12. We would go drive in abandoned dirt roads where he taught me to drift the car into the turns mainly using the handbrake since our ride was a very underpowered DKW 3=6 with a 2-cycle, 3 cylinder engine probably making 50 HP. One Saturday morning (it must have been 5:00 AM) he came into my room, woke me up and told me to quickly pack for three days and that I was coming with him. I later learned that the previous evening his best friend and pilot of their dedicated rally car (a 1965 Alfa Romeo Giulia ti) had been admitted to the emergency room and could not participate in the 2-day Rally of the Mountain III (Rally de la Montaña III) for which they had worked so hard prepping the car and doing all of the route calculations, etc. I got in the car with him as we headed down to the starting point of the race. He was explaining to me how the tandem Heuer stopwatches and the Alpina hand-cranked calculator that were bolted on the dash worked. All the info was just going over my head.

Article by Pedro P. Bonilla, Tech Editor
Shortly after 8:00 AM we took the green flag and off we were! Within the first 5 kilometers I had managed to get us lost. My Dad stopped the car and got out. He paced for a few seconds and commanded: “Move over, you’re driving!” All I could say was “Yes Sir!”. With his total control of the navigation we quickly got back on-track and on-time without having lost any points. It was a tough 2-day event crossing the high sierras of the Dominican Republic where we were living at the time. Dad was the copilot now so he had his time/ distance/ speed calculations but he was also coaching/ instructing me as well. The first day we finished a respective fifth overall but still close to 2nd, 3rd and 4th places in penalty points. Before going to bed I remember that he sat down with me for over an hour and we had a debrief just as in our karting days. The next morning we took the green with much more confidence and finished the day 2nd overall giving us the 3rd place of the event due to the combined results of both days. At the awards ceremony we were called to the podium and just before the 3rd place trophy was handed to us there was a commotion and everything stopped. We got off the podium and about 30 minutes later the Chief Steward announced that there had been a disqualification and it was car number 7 driven by Pedro Bonilla and co-piloted by Pedro Bonilla Jr. It was
further explained that the fourth place car had protested. The protest was declared valid. They pointed out that according to the rules, any Rally pilot was required to have valid driver’s license and at the time I was about to turn 15 so I didn’t even have a learner’s permit. The third place points and trophy were being stripped from us. But then, something incredible happened. Most of the other 192 participants (there had been 100 cars) got up and started chanting our names. Many were upset at the now official 3rd place finishers telling them that “the kid” had beat them all and that they shouldn’t be sore losers. In the end the organizers held the awards ceremony again and gave us the 3rd place trophies, but gave the points to the 4th place finishers. That Rally has been one of the most memorable events of my life. I was mostly into dirt bikes after that and then with college and later raising a young family most of my 4-wheel racing came to a halt for a while, although I had managed to keep a Porsche in my garage continually since my college days. When Mondays were literally too painful due to the off-roading on the weekends, I gave up the bikes and started
Autocrossing and DE’ing my ’98 Boxster. That felt much better! My Dad passed away 15 years ago but I still feel him sitting and instructing me from the right seat (even when there is no right seat) and I can swear than in more than one occasion he has physically intervened to save my behind when MB sole entry at 1960 12 Hours of Sebring I’ve done something stupid at the track. So why do I drive Porsches when I tried to find the same spot and “parked” my Dad was such an MB aficionado? Well, in 1960 he was at Sebring to watch next to him. Everything turned out reversed by how the mighty (privateer) #81 Mercedes chance: The colors of the cars, our clothSL 300s was going to dominate the race. ing and the fact that I could have been his Instead it and every other car in the field got beat by a car half their weight and half father. From The Members “Porsche…there is no substitute” – Ferdinand Porsche It was May 2016 when I discovered, much to my joy, my hidden passion for sports cars and the feeling of freedom behind my 1st Porsche. We always remember our firsts, in my case ‘she’ was a white 2015 Boxster. While it was comparatively yesterday, it feels like a lifetime regained by the performance, handling and driver centric experience behind the Porsche’s steering wheel. The Boxster took my breath away and accelerated my daily driver experience to a completely new level, seemingly unmatched by the other OEMs. Being a true believer in the quality of German manufacturing and engineering, my passion for cars has evolved over the years starting with VW Beetles and EOS - models I could rely on in all-weather driving conditions and still balance between horsepower and handling for that spirited driving experience we all crave on occasion. Although I loved my last VW, I was looking for an unparalleled driving experience that would combine a style and authenticity of a brand along with strong mechanical features embracing power, reliability and a premium sound system. After months of auto market research and multiple test drives, I found everything I was searching for – in my Porsche. I have now owned two Porsches since 2016 – my newest the 718 model, an upgraded version of my previous mid-engine roadster. legend. Her colors also personify my identity from her white exterior extolling tranquility, while the red interior express the color of life and passion for speed. All in all, the white and red I saw as analogies to Porsche’s brand ethic of balancing power to the driver experience. I would like to express my special thanks to Porsche West Broward for their expertise and support exploring the features of my own car, Atlanta Porsche Experience Center for offering a best in class experience (and cool brand female attire!), Exotic Car Society for some memorable events and gatherings, and of course, Porsche Club of America in Miami – for connecting me with the communities throughout the world, sharing the love for Porsche! My journey with Porsche has only begun and I am yet to explore and embrace so many more experiences. There are at least three more items on my bucket list that I am hoping to check off in a near future: tour the Porsche production factory in Leipzig (and may be even pick up my new ride at first hand), visit the Stuttgart Porsche museum, and go through driving certification program offered by Porsche experience centers. I never knew that my Porsche dream would one day turn into reality and every day enjoyment. However, one thing I never doubt myself about was the determination and courage I had to pursue it…
