President’s Corner By now everyone should be aware of the ESCAPE to the CAPE event that is coming up on August 20 to the 23. This event organized by Rick Veingrad, has grown to become far ahead of what it was originally expected to be. The original concept was our usual type of overnight event, we meet at a starting point and as a group drive to a hotel. Once there, we enjoy a great dinner and great companionship as we enjoy the evening. Next day it is usually breakfast and then head for home. Fun, but nothing out of the usual. The Escape is vastly different! Our starting point will be at Porsche of West Broward. In the past it was usually a mad scramble of cars trying to exit a parking lot in confusion, attempting to stay together in the face of oncoming traffic. That confusion has been eliminated, with the Escape. The cars will be organized from the time you arrive at the dealership, where you will be assigned a number and will be parked in order of your exit. The cars will exit the dealership in the same order thus eliminating the confusion. SPEED LIMITS WILL BE STRICTLY OBSERVED! The Group will make the run-up Interstate 75 to Ft Myers, where we will stop to enjoy lunch at the Boathouse Tiki Bar & Grill in Ft Myers. After lunch, the Group will continue the short distance to the Westin Resort. This resort is one of the biggest changes made to this event. The Western Resort is a true resort in every sense of the term. In doing the pre running for the Escape I visited the resort and was extremely impressed. The grounds were immaculate, there are plenty of covered and uncovered parking, the pool is beautiful, and of course great bars onsite. But more important than those things, the staff was willing to bend over backwards to accommodate our Group and that is what you want in a resort. You may have heard about a car show that we will be having at the Escape. This will be the Porsche Love Car Show at the Escape. This event is not a Concours event. It’s a laid-back salute to the car we all love and are proud to own. Judging will be not only on the display of cars at the hotel, but on who demonstrates to me their knowledge and enjoyment of their car. All weekend I will be observing from

Lunch to the dinner on Saturday, show me how you love your Porsche and win an award, Everyone that registered for the Escape is already entered in the event and eligible for awards for first thru third place in both cars and SUV’s. Did I mention the Prime Rib Surf and Turf Dinner that we will be having at the Waterfront Bar and Bistro at the hotel? Not only do we feed your love for cars, but we take care of your love for food also. Last but not the least is the Raffle that will be held. Great prizes will be given away, but the best is the two Porsche Experience trips that will go to two lucky winners.

Peter Olliviere, President

As I said at the beginning of this article, this event is different, we have really broken out and ESCAPED. Your Club needs you, taking pictures, writing articles, volunteering at events, and creating new events. Whatever skill or knowledge you have, bring it on. We can turn it into content for this magazine so it can be shared with all the members. You can contact anyone on the Board of Directors through the Kassette and they will be happy to help turn your skill into Club Reality.

Peter

Gold Coast Stickers When you joined PCA you received a windshield sticker that identified you as a member of the Porsche Club of America. It is a simple way to show your pride in your car and in the Club and allowed you to be easily recognized by other PCA members. Unfortunately, that sticker never identified the region you belonged to. A couple of months ago, the idea of creating a similar sticker that could be displayed depicting the Gold Coast Region Symbol. Well due to the hard work of several Board members, including Christy Spangler and Ian Gerada, that Gold Coast Region Sticker now exists. We are proud to provide every member in our region with this new symbol of the region to display next to the PCA Sticker. Each GCR member will receive the new region sticker as below this month in the Kassette. I would like to thank all the Board Members that gave their talents to make this happen. Remember Porsche Club of America, it’s not only about the cars, it’s about the people. Peter Olliviere President Gold Coast Region.

Editor’s Notes The summer season is helping us

enjoy our Porsche events as you can see with the article and photos from the Werks Reunion. If you have ever attended this event, it may be the largest and best collection of Porsches you will ever experience. In 2017 I was able to help set up the event and the experience of cars and fellow PCA members will be with me forever. If you have never attended the event I strongly encourage you to attend the Werks Reunion. Many of our members just returned from Parade and we will present their activities in the September issue of the Kassette. Parade is another must do event if you like to be with PCA members from all around the US. The format consist of competitive, technical, social events and a banquet

almost every night. Parade is like our zonefest but open to all PCA regions. Later this month the fun continues with the “Escape to the Cape” summer GCR weekend getaway. Check out page 17 for more information and a very special raffle that will provide the lucky winners with Porsche Track Experience packages. The “Escape” event has become very popular and this year we will be joined by members from the Suncoast region. If you like our driving tours, we have just added the Mountain Tour trip to the calendar so that you can start planning to attend this October drive to the mountains with your fellow GCR flat landers as the folks from that region refer to us. Our Kassette staff has been very busy searching for interesting content, mem-

bers, and ideas to produce our monthly newsletter. We are very lucky to have a staff of professional talented volunteers that are dedicated to producing a top quality magazine each month. This month we interview Kirk Giannola, our graphics artist who creates most of the Kassette artwork and all of the 48 Hour at Sebring Club Race posters. As the club grows we are always looking for ideas and volunteers with writing and photography skills to help with the Kassette publication. If you have any ideas for future articles or would like to help please contact me. Enjoy your Porsche summer.

WERKS REUNION 2021 by Mark Johnson, staff writer The pandemic got in the way but not for long. The 2021 edition of the Porsche WERKS REUNION at Amelia Island, FL was moved from March ’21 to Friday, May 21st, 2021. So, what? Big deal, and NO PROBLEM! What the virus could not impact was the Porsche enthusiasm and 900 +/- vehicles from showing up on Friday, May 21st for a record-breaking event. Yes, records were broken. There were over 150 Porsches on the Judged Show Field with 750+ in the Porsche Corral, with no telling how many additional 944s, 914s, or Panameras relegated to spectator parking. Did we suggest enthusiasm? There were more cars, aficionados, friendly reunions, and unparalleled Porsche camaraderie than could be had anywhere else in the eastern half of the US as related to P-Car fun. We might have missed a few historical Porsches, but not many, as virtually every model sold in the US over the past 60+ years was seen on the fairway. As many folks know, the Porsche WERKS Reunion is held in two locations every year. The Florida venue is associated with the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance. The 2021 WERKS was staged at the Amelia River Golf Club. Porsche WERKS uses two golf fairways for the Judged vehicle areas. The Porsche Corral is held on a third fairway, but it must be a par 7 to fit 750 or so P-Cars on that green grass between the tee box and the putting green. The view from one end or the other seems to go forever. The second WERKS event is held in association and on the Friday preceding the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. The 2021 edition of WERKS “West” will be held on August 13th in Monterey, CA. Each of these Reunions sets the table for a phenomenal weekend of car viewing, people watching, vehicle auctions (managed by RM Sotheby’s) and spectacular vintage and modern vehicles. WERKS events and the Concours shows are exceptional! The Gold Coast PCA was in attendance with quite a few members. No official count could be identified; however, we did have a PCA Gold Coast member score big in the Judged Porsche competition. Mr. Fabio Martinez of Parkland, FL and took 1st Place in their respective category: 1999-2010 996 & 997. Fabio won the division with his 2002 Carrera 996 in Lapis Blue Pearl. The entire family: Fabio, Amaia his bride, and son, Asier, were all in attendance at Amelia. Each wore huge smiles when the win as announced. Asier collected the 1st Place award on Dad’s behalf from his passenger seat during the award ceremony. No doubt Asier was instrumental in the vehicle prep and offering great encouragement for Dad! They were a very happy family, and why not? This was a win on a “national” level.

Also showing on the Judged field were a couple of our other PCA Gold Coast Members. Albert Salvador brought two of his Porsches to Ameila. He placed his 1977 911S in Slate Grey into the outlaw competition. The Carrera RS/R Outlaw tribute build has period-correct RS interior, a custom Macacauba wood roofrack, Koni shock suspension and a ton of additional upgrades.

PCA-GC was also represented by Bob and Patricia Walters with their 2007 Carrara White 997 Carrera S. Both Bob and Patricia are carrying their cameras to every P-Car event and usually they capture hundreds if not thousands of pics for each Porsche event. Bob is a great acolyte for Porsche; in fact he spent a great amount of time with several of the more interesting folks in attendance, such as Jeff Zwart of Porsche Pikes Peak Hill Climb fame and Sara Dakarmen of LA Dismantlers.

We spoke with Mark at length and his history with the car is a true Porsche love story. Besides putting this SuperCup back into show and race ready condition, Mark runs Porsche Club Racing events on a regular basis. As Mark is from Orlando, he is always at the GC/Suncoast 48 Hours of Porsche in February. All told, judging was held in 14 different segments, which offered a high level of competition of over 10 vehicles per segment. (Note: If our Die Porsche Kassette readers receive the “PCA

Plenty of Porsche Cars to see on the Judged Field and nearly 5 times as many in the Corral. E-Brake” news at their personal email address, refer to the May 25, 2021 issue to see additional photos and read the PCA write-up of this event.) It’s a pretty easy run up the Florida Turnpike and I-95 to Jacksonville and the Amelia Island, Fernandina Beach area. The distance is right at 350 miles from the Broward – Palm Beach county line, and about 5 hours of driving (more or less) depending on your pace. Once on Amelia there are multiple places to stay from the luxury Ritz Carlton, to multiple hotels, and VRBO’s, beach rentals and the like. Should anyone decide to go for the 2022 event (March 3-6, 2022) make your reservations early. The places book quickly with Porsche peeps and all the folks in attendance for the Concours d’Elegance. Friends from all over the eastern US were in attendance. Mr. Kelly Telfer, commissioned artist for WERKS, was there with posters and paintings. Others we have met at 48 Hours of Porsche, North Carolina Rennsport Dragon Rallies, the Miami DRT events, and our own GC members at Porsche & Pancake meets. Every bit as much fun as speaking with the celebs in attendance was speaking with the owners on the field and in the corral. Amazing folks with amazing cars, and amazing stories to string it all together. It is all great Porsche fellowship.

Beyond Fabio’s win there were two additional segment winners who stood out for their exceptional presentation. The first was Mr. Dave Jerome and his 1956 Porsche 356 Speedster in black. This was simply a stunning and well-presented Porsche. In speaking with one of the judges for the class (19491965 356) the car stood head and shoulders above the fray, and the competition was strong. The other 1st place winner of note was a 1995 Carrera 993 SuperCup owned by Mark Nasrallah of Orlando, FL.

Simply order up the 2022 event like a hotdog in Chicago One of the many Porsches arriving at Werks. This one a 1956 Porsche 356 Coupe and it sounded wonderful!

How I Came to Own My Porsche 968 by Kevin Kerwin

I was always a Mustang guy, and particularly, a Shelby Mustang guy. Ever since I saw the four new white-with-bluestriped 1966 GT 350s parked together for sale on the nearby Ford lot in St. Louis, I knew I had to have one someday. But at that time I was in the sixth grade, and my attempts at convincing my mother to buy a GT 289 High Performance Mustang Fastback or a 1966 440 Magnum or Hemi Dodge Charger had failed miserably. She bought a slant-six Dodge Dart GT because “it was the safest car on the road.” But I always swore that a 1966 Mustang Fastback would be my first car, and it was. In college (in Michigan) I scraped together $200 after paying my out-of-state tuition and bought a rusted, navy blue 114,000mile example that leaned about an inch on the left from the apparently 400 pound guy who had owned it at some point. But it was a Mustang Fastback, and it checked off an item on the bucket list for cheap money. In spite of its body condition, it was seemingly fast with a 289 4-barrel engine, automatic transmission, and bucket seats. The window sill was low enough to stick my elbow out the window, the radio and 8-track worked, and the roofline was beautiful. I was cruisin’! Fast forward a couple of years to when I was out in San Diego at my mother’s place for the summer. I came across what appeared to be a 1966 Shelby GT 350, with several 1967 Shelby custom parts from Maier Racing. It was light silver blue with, of all travesties, 1968 Camaro taillights. This car had been set up for mountain road racing in California. It was a 6-cylinder, but it had dual Jaguar SU carburetors custom fitted to the Ford 200 straight 6, a Dagenham 4-speed, Aeroquip braided armored hoses and a chrome valve cover, 12.5:1 pistons, and all of the brakes, steering, suspension, steering wheel, and side roof windows out of a wrecked 1966 GT 350, high-lift rear springs, Cragar chrome mag wheels, 70 width tires, and those cool black and

14

Die Porsche

yellow California plates. My mother surprised me with about $1000 she had invested for me as a baby to give me a “nest egg” to get my adult life started with. I promptly spent it on the car and boy, was she mad! But at age 21, THIS was the investment in my future that mattered most. Over the next year I sanded the body down to bare metal, added the brake air scoops from the ’66, had it repainted 15 coats of white pearl lacquer with metallic blue Shelby stripes with silver sparkles added in. I also added the blue GT 350 side stripes, changed the tail lights to 1968-style Shelby type, and moved the radio antenna aft to the right quarter panel, set at a fast-looking angle like a 1957 Chevy Bel Air. It was beautiful. Gas station attendants begged to look under the hood, people jumped out in the street to take pictures of it, and cops pulled me over every few weeks to “check it out.” It handled like a dream with 50-50 weight distribution, about 200 horsepower, large anti-sway bar, traction arms, and looked like a Shelby GT 350, leaving those gas station attendants to scratch their heads in wonder. But alas, once it had 140,000 miles on it and I was still a poor student, it needed an engine rebuild which I couldn’t afford, so I sold it and bought other 1966 Mustang (in 1977) with 38,000 original miles, and completely stock. Years later in 2005, after going through about 30 different conventional cars plus one VW Beetle convertible, I bought yet another 1966 GT 350, this time a rare 4-speed Hertz Rent-A-Racer with a balanced-and-blueprinted motor, Highland Green with white stripes instead of the usual black with gold stripes. All of the numbers matched, and it was in the Shelby American Auto Club Registry: the real thing. It was wickedly fast, deafeningly loud, smelled like gas, was kind of hot inside, had no power brakes, power steering, or air conditioning—a stock Shelby race car for the street. It was wonderful, it was a workout to drive, and

Kassette | Aug 2021

it was my divorce present to me, for I had just finished paying 3 years of alimony to my first wife, and she would never put up with me owning another Shelby, thinking I would kill myself in it (heard that one before, guys?) My then-girlfriend hated it, so it was perfect. You may be wondering at this point what this has to do with a 968. Well, over the 45 years I have owned cars, I’ve bought and sold many Mustangs, Galaxies, a Vega, a Camaro, a Mercedes 280 sedan, RX-7’s, a 300ZX, 7 British cars of various makes, a Corvette that was given to me, a Cadillac Seville, Jeep Cherokees and Grand Cherokees, the VW mentioned above, but never a Porsche. Plus, I have driven many more cars on test drives and for auto auctions. I had visited the 1978 Porsche Parade in San Diego, which happened to be up the street from my mother’s apartment, but I only saw about three that I liked the style of; the exact opposite was true with the national Ferrari Club meet I went to the next year. And since Ferrari competed directly with Shelby, they were more in my spotlight of interest. In fact, to this day, although I have driven several VW’s and rode to high school occasionally in a 914, Porsche styling never appealed to me much until recently. And the only 911 I have driven was a mid -80’s one, and I didn’t like the large diameter steering wheel, the low seating relative to the window sill, the rubbery feel of the gearshift, or the VW sound of it compared to Ford V8s and Ferrari V12s. So, it was unlikely that a Porsche was in my future until… I visited my friend John in New Orleans in 2007. He had an Anthracite Gray 1994 968 cabriolet that he let me borrow for the weekend. My God, what a wonderful car it was! The engine was smooth as a clock, the sound was appealing, the 6-speed with 2 overdrives was the best I had ever shifted, the balance was 50-50, the traction was like glue: you couldn’t break it loose unless you were turning in first gear, and then it was only

a chirp, then vroom. The seats fit me like a glove, as good as the Jensen-Healeys I had owned. The ergonomics of gearshift location, control distances, visibility from inside, stupendous brakes . . . it is a completely HARMONIOUS car with no faults that I could find. AND, it was as fast as a GT 350 on acceleration, 20 MPH FASTER at top speed, got TWICE the gas mileage, had much better traction than a Shelby, AND it did it all with an engine with only 4 cylinders instead of 8! The air conditioning was faultless, and you could hear the Blaupunkt AM-FM-CD sound system pretty well! I liked it so much that as soon as I got back to Ft. Lauderdale I found one for sale on a car lot, a nice Guards Red one with black interior and about 55,000 miles on it. And best of all—something that’s probably sacrilege to 911-philes—it and the 944’s are the only Italian-looking Porsches ever built, especially when red. I owned that 968 for over 12 years, and every time I drove it, a smile came to my face and I gave it a love pat on the dash, while uttering “Machina Linda!” as a Spanish-speaking friend used to say. Eventually it needed a repaint, so I did that and replaced all of the exterior rubber bits, and I reupholstered the seats with red Alcantera inserts to match the body. The Alcantera inserts were cooler in the summer, warmer in the winter, and for those of you who don’t know, the higher coefficient of friction of the cloth keeps you in the seat in corners much better than leather or vinyl. It was reliable and had no IMS bearing faults! I loved the 968 so much, I decided to buy a similar, 944 S2 cabriolet in addition to it. So I started looking, but lo and behold, on the lucky day that I made a big score on the stock market, I found another red 1994 968 cabriolet with only 38,000 miles on it on a dealer’s lot in Delray Beach. It wasn’t a 944, but it did have half the mileage of the first 968 (by now about 77,000), and a tan interior. Having passed on two Ferraris to do the practical thing like pay off a second mortgage, only

to see the car values double and triple soon thereafter, I decided to buy the 968 that day instead of paying off some more bills. So, for a time I had almost identical twins, the first one red with black, the second one red with tan interior, and serial numbers only 95 apart! They may have been built on the same day, and they may have made the trips back and forth from Germany to the US together. I sold the first 968 but still have the second car, and I continue to love driving it. And one of things I get the impression of as a PCA member is that everything else is sort of second class relative to 911s. Many members have only owned 911s, maybe only know 911s for whatever reason, and therefore maybe have no idea of what a seriously excellent conventional layout car the 944/968 design is. Having owned 38 cars now and only one rear-engine air-cooled VW, I can tell you that the 944/968 series is vastly underappreciated for how superior the design is relative to other conventionally-arranged cars of ANY make. The transaxle cars have better weight balance than ANY of the air-cooled 912/911 cars, much better performance than most roadsters of any make with an engine of similar size. My point of including the Shelby history is to show that in spite of the premier place that the Shelby GT 350 holds in automotive racing history and collectability values, the 944/968 series far exceeds the traction, braking, cornering, ultimate top speed, daily drivability, and reliability. It doubles the gas mileage, and equals the acceleration of one of the very best small-block v8s ever built, at much, much less cost to

buy. And the cabriolets are just as rare as the few real 1965-1966 GT-350s and most 911 limited edition variants. Maybe you 911 owners don’t know that since so many like to say, “if the engine isn’t in the back and air-cooled, it isn’t a Porsche.” It looks to me like Porsche decided that for the future, the 911 had to evolve from the limited potential of the air-cooled rear engine design to the superior possibilities and balance of the transaxle cars. The 944/968 series is one of the BEST conventional cars ever produced, and the 1990’s models still exceed most other conventional cars of any make, of similar engine displacement today. And by the way, I still own a Shelby Mustang, only this one is a 2009 red GT 500 convertible with a supercharged 5.4 liter engine, 500 horsepower and 500 foot-pounds of torque, 6-speed manual, and that same old-school loud rumbly exhaust. It’s not the harmonious car a 968 is, but it’s old school and still cool; and it is also a MUCH better car than the early Shelby Mustangs. The only bad thing about it is that the homeless bums all know what it is and they want to tell me at the stoplight about how they had a relative that owned one. They don’t do that with a 968: another superior feature. So take it from a guy who didn’t work his way up through 911s: the 944/968 designs are stupendous automobiles and if you have never driven one, you really should give it a try. You’ll learn a new respect for the “Porsches that aren’t really Porsches.” They are cars that were actually well ahead of their time.

DIE PORSCHE KASSETTE hopes everyone is enjoying our member feature articles. We want to get to know you, and trust you will enjoy meeting your fellow members. This month, we introduce Mr. Kirk Giannola, Graphic Designer, Porsche owner, and key member of the DIE KASSETTE staff. Kirk was born in Washington DC but spent his early days with his family in Frankfurt Germany. His father, Frank, was a FAA inspector. The FAA moved his dad to Europe when Kirk was 6, way back in 1966. His mother, Ursula, is German and this combination made it easy for young Kirk to learn the language and become comfortable as an American in Germany. Today, while he is back in the USA there are still a few family members in the “old country”. Unfortunately, Frank passed away in January 2020, but Ursula is still strong, sharp and living independently in St. Augustine, FL at 90 years of age. Of many benefits living in Germany was access to automobiles. By the age of 13 Kirk was riding with his parents at over 100 mph (160+ kph for the metric set). His father had a XJ6 and mom wheeled around in a BMW tii. Both liked to drive fast! They had the Autobahn in their backyard and virtually unlimited speed. The need for attentive driving was crucial. It’s almost a perfect location to develop many skills needed to compete on the track, especially those related to vision, closing rates, estimating time and distance for potential passing, and watching your “six” for upcoming faster traffic. Germany also offers wonderful access to high-level performance racing. Kirk and Frank went to many Formula 1 races at places like Hockenheim and Nurbrugring. The drivers of the time were the “Who’s Who” of open wheel and traditional road racing. They enjoyed watching Jochen Rindt, Jackie Ickx, Jim Clark, Phil Hill and Jackie Stewart, among others as they negotiated the best race venues and strong competition. (Lucky kid we’d say!) These days Kirk is a Senior Graphic Designer for Durante Equipment by trade and training. With this expertize, he offers his time and efforts regarding a majority of design work that goes into our club magazine. In 38 years of design experience he certainly has a substantial body of work. A terrific example of Kirk’s work are the “48 Hours of Sebring” posters. He lives with his long-time girlfriend in Tamarac, and between them they have: 1 son, 3 daughters, 6 grandchildren, and 4 dogs. This total does not include the son-in-laws, but they are always counted in the mix. Their family days are most assuredly fulfilling during holidays and throughout the year. Kirk has been a Porsche owner since 2005. His first P-Car was a 1987 Carrera in Guards Red with black interior. Over the years, the 911’s motor begged to be overhauled and Marty Gilbert of Marvin Gilbert Motorsports (MGM) in Pompano Beach, FL took on that task. Working with the team at MGM, the 911 was upgraded from a 3.2L to a 3.4L adding aftermarket engine management, custom throttle body, new pistons, barrels, cams, headers, bearings, injectors, custom fuel pressure regulator, custom hoses, coil pack, clutch, flywheel, and oil hoses. All parts were powder coated, anodized or painted where needed per Porsche spec. Now the Carrera provides ample power and the necessary air conditioning to offset the south Florida heat and humidity. It is also livable in our traffic. Kirk could have tracked the 911 but he sug-

gests that it is too valuable. Before the upgrade, the car was used to hone Kirk’s driving skills at various PCA Gold Coast and other autocross events. He still uses it today as his Sunday driver. Wanting to go to the track, in 2006 Kirk added a 1989 994 S2, also Guards Red, to the collection. With the support of MGM and a fun car to drive, Kirk gained valuable seat time and immeasurable experience. In a few short years Kirk was ready to step up again. There came the next opportunity in 2014. Kirk purchased a totally modified – podium finishing – former Firehawk series 944 S2. The “old” red 944 S2 track car was sold. Now a “real racecar” is in the Giannola stable. Kirk suggests that this 32 yearold Firehawk 944 S2 racecar is truly fun, and fast. As for his favorite Porsche all-time, Mr. Giannola is a fan of the 917 longtail. Around south Florida you will find Kirk attending Driver Education (DE) events, a few car shows, museum trips and other happenings sponsored by PCA Gold Coast. Of course, a good bit of his free time is spent at the design table working on our club graphics needs. Look for Kirk at a future Gold Coast show or race venue. Say hi, and learn a bit about his efforts with the KASSETTE or his racing. We hope you enjoy friendship and his design work for our club. He is a talented and passionate Porsche car guy.

Gold Coast Drivers Education at PBIR Mike Roblin, DE Chair

Calling all Drivers! Both Gold Coast and Gulfstream Regions will be hosting a High Performance Drivers Education event at Palm Beach International Raceway on October 2nd and 3rd, 2021 and we want to see you there! We have opened the event on clubregistration.net and the event ID is 870726, so log on and let’s get registered for the event so we can all enjoy some muchneeded track time! You may be asking yourself what is HPDE? HPDE is a High Performance Driver’s Education Program designed to allow drivers the opportunity to drive their cars in a safe environment at high speeds without the risk of getting speeding tickets! As a beginner or intermediate driver we provide you with a friendly, competent instructor who will be in the car with you to give you pointers and information to help you get around the track in a safe and fun way. It is an experience not to be missed! Is it safe? Let’s take your typical daily commute for example: How many distracted drivers do you see around you every day during your drive? Is everyone paying close attention to what is going on around them? No. Texting while driving, driving while putting on makeup or shaving and using your knee to hold the steering wheel? All of these are common things we see every single day. What if you were 100% focused on driving and everyone else around you was too? Wouldn’t that be great? That is exactly what happens at our HPDE Events. No smartphones, emails, texts, etc to distract you and you are surrounded by people who are doing the same and driving at the same experience level as you are. What about my car, can it handle track driving? All Porsche cars and in fact, most cars built today are perfectly capable of being driven at higher than highway speeds on a racetrack. Your car was thoroughly tested at the racetrack during it’s development at the factory and Porsche even offers similar track driving experiences at the Porsche Experience Centers in Atlanta and Los Angeles using cars just like yours with NO modifications. That being said, we do require that you get your car inspected prior to the event at one of the many technical inspection facilities (dealers and several trusted independent mechanics) just to check over everything in your car to make sure it is current on all maintenance, that your safety systems are working correctly, that your brakes are fresh, and that you have sufficient tread remaining on your tires. How much track time do we get, will I be out on track with everyone else at the same time? All drivers are categorized based on their skill level and are separated into one of 4 groups. Beginner/Novice (Green), Intermediate (Blue), Solo/Advanced (Yellow), and Instructors (Red).

Kassette | Aug 2021

Each group is sent out for approximately 25 minutes at a time and we rotate each group throughout the day giving everyone the chance to get on track in their respective groups/sessions. Our format gives each driver four separate 25-minute sessions each day of the event with breaks in-between to allow you time to cool off, rehydrate, and spend time with your instructor to refine all the new skills you are learning. Gold Coast Region will be hosting our next event using the road course at Palm Beach International Raceway on October 2nd and 3rd, 2021. Entries will cost $500 for both days and $350 for one day. Everyone will be required to provide their own helmet with an SA2010 or SA2015 rating (Motorcycle helmets with only a DOT rating are not acceptable). Any questions about HPDE or the October event, please email me dechair@goldcoastregion.org or call me at 407-922-5704 and I’ll be happy to answer any additional questions you might have.

“Summer Days Drifting Away”

Christy Spangler, Director

Yes, I quoted the song “Summer Nights” from the movie “Grease” - is it stuck in your head now? It is appropriate since August is here - that means summer is nearing an end, schools will be starting back up and summer vacations will soon all be in the rear-view mirror. It also looks like we are on the tail end of the pandemic which means we will start working on adding more events to our calendar. I am looking forward to one more summer weekend getaway at the end of this month - the Escape to the Cape. I hope to see many of you all the Escape there. The next trip will be the fall getaway to the mountains of Northern Georgia in October. Check out the GCR jackets and duffle bag in our goodie store: https:// goldcoast.pcawebstore.org to bring along for the trip.

Our DE committee has been busy planning the next DE event for October 2-3. See the ad and article in this issue for more information. We also have regularly scheduled events - the monthly first Saturday Porsches and Pancakes and the third Thursday Socials. Stay tuned to the enews email blasts for these and other events that are added to the calendar. If you are interested in volunteering or have an idea for an event, please let me know. You can email me at christyspangler@yahoo.com.

Photo of the Month

Old and New by Christy Spangler, photo of the month chair

This month’s photo was submitted by JJ Colon of his 1988 3.2 Carrera Cabriolet. JJ says that with the resurgence of Wynwood and the remodeling of the warehouses, photographing his vintage Porsche in front of this Wynwood mural seemed like a good contrast between the old and the new. Even though background is a strong graphic statement with the texture of the shutters contrasting against the sleek & reflectiveness of JJ’s Porsche, it is complimented by the prominent Carerra graphic. JJ used his Samsung S8 to take this image and applied a light color enhancer. I really appreciate all the great submissions - please keep them coming! How to submit a photo for consideration: Submission deadline is the 20th of each month. Please include the following information: • name • phone number • information about your car • the title for the photo • a short write up about the photo • what kind of camera or smart phone you used to capture the image Email the above information with your high resolution image attached to gcr.potm@gmail.com

Tech Corner : Article by Pedro P. Bonilla, Tech Editor

The auto industry is changing at an incredible pace and actually mirroring trends in other industries. It used to be that automobile manufacturers were mammoth conglomerates that dictated their own paths and controlled their own future. The traditional business model of designing, manufacturing, selling, servicing and financing vehicles still continues, but the industry is speeding towards a new frontier mainly guided by sustainability, and changing consumer behavior. Because of this, manufacturers now collaborate with tech giants, they work closely with audio moguls and augmented reality experts and we can see how these collaborations with advanced technologies are making their way into our cars and our car culture. This trend, which actually started in 2018, together with the ever-decreasing emission standards have made vehicle production costs increase. This higher cost produced a reduction in car sales in 2019, which was worsened by the global pandemic and its aftermath in 2020. Now, in 2021 but with 2022 models ready to go into production, manufacturers are embracing these technologies more and more in order to increase sales. Lets take a look at some of the industry trends in more detail:

Trends Make the Future • Connectivity When we were kids we followed with keen interest the displacement in liters of our Porsches, which slowly grew from the 1.1L flat-4 of the early 356s to the latest 4.0L flat-6 powerhouses of the new GTs (GT3, GT4, GTS). But nowadays buyers are more concerned with how big the infotainment screen is and whether it has Apple CarPlay or not and whether they can access their Pandora account from their car.

• Self-Driving ability Automated or assisted driving is another of the rising trends in the industry. Car buyers cautiously embrace safety-focused semi-autonomous driver aids but have been slow to accept the prospect of handing the steering wheel and all controls completely to the car’s computer(s). This one is not without controversy. Some believe that the age of fully automated, self-driving taxis is just around the corner, while others believe that in order for cars to drive by themselves safely it will take many, many more years.

• Electrification Probably, the biggest trend for the last 20 years, and this is just the beginning. Toyota started the trend in 2000 with the successful introduction of the hybrid Prius, then Tesla with it’s full electric line of vehicles changed the way people view electric cars. Porsche was quick to realize the trend and started working on its strategy for 2025 and along them, Audi, Mercedes Benz, and most other manufacturers which are introducing or working on new electric platforms, even Ferrari.

• Usage-Based Insurance Insurance companies which now have access to incredible amounts of data from our vehicles, have been able to re-assess their risk and have started introducing new policies based on distance travelled by the vehicle, the car’s category, and the driver’s

26

Die Porsche

background (including health, habits and age) even attaching data acquisition devices to the customer’s vehicle in order to customize their coverage. All of theses trends are reshaping our ever-changing way of life. They will transform the car into a platform, where drivers evolve to riders, reframing “driving” as the synonym of wellbeing and convenience. Is this the future? Who knows? In doing research for this article I came across the flowing quote: To the question of whether the Porsche brand faces conflict between innovation and tradition, Knuth Walczak, Porsche’s head of the Innovation and Preliminary Development Management said: “We don’t define the Porsche brand of the future – instead, It is the Porsche brand that has defined our focus. We have the fascinating job of continuing to build authentic sports cars. I’m certain that the technologies of the future will not cool down the hot, fascinating core of the Porsche brand but instead will heat it up even more”. Most of the articles and news releases relating to the future of the auto industry and future of the sports car that I read were about the above mentioned trends and how cars and the auto industry would evolve and modernize as it embraced the future.

Only Porsche, referring to the probability of introducing a 911 Hybrid, promised that “it will be extremely powerful but still a fantastic driver’s car as it has always been”. I hope and believe that Porsche will keep those promises of maintaining tradition and heritage very present in their nearfuture, electric, self-driving, connected sports cars. A few of us (fewer and fewer every year) still perceive pure enjoyment from driving our old, analog, disconnected Porsche. Heck, some of us still like to shift our own gears using heel/ toe.

Autocross Update

Steve Kidd, Autocross Chair

This article is dedicated to long time GCR member, BJ Fuller, who recently passed away in Sebring Florida. “YEAH PORSCHE” Who can forget that yell every Bay Bottom Crawl award ceremony when a Porsche/Porsche driver was recognized. BJ was the perfect example of a true Porsche enthusiast and it was most apparent during Bay Bottom when BJ was in top form. First a little about the Fullers, and then about the Bay Bottom Crawl for those that never heard of this King of all Autocrosses. The following is a recent excerpt from the Key West Citizen newspaper. “B.J. attended Key West High School and Scottsboro High School in Alabama, graduating from the latter in 1952. Later in life, she achieved a master’s degree in counseling in 1996, then a doctorate in Psychology in 2010. B.J. married Jack Ronald Fuller in Key West on July 8, 1956. They had 64 wonderful years together and were blessed with three children. She and Jack opened Fullers Insurance in 1977. She had a great love of Porsches, and along with Jack, spent countless hours involved with Ecurie Vitesse Sports Car Club and the Porsche Club of America. She was one of the organizers of the Bay Bottom Crawl at Loop Road on Sugarloaf Key, which was one of the longest-running annual events in the history of the Keys. She also loved traveling in their motor home across the USA. She was a proud member of the Frustrated Maestros singing group, which she joined on their travels. Jack and B.J. retired and moved to Sebring, Florida in 2016. They moved again to Lake Placid, Florida in 2020. She passed away peacefully in her sleep on May 27, 2021, after 86 years of a vibrant and happy life.” Jack & B.J. Fuller joined PCA Gold Coast Region in 1966, making them the 3rd longest standing active GCR members. The Fullers were extremely active in the early years and were even recognized as National PCA Family of the Year in the early 70’s. The Fullers had at least one example of just about every Porsche sports cars…including 356’s, early 911’s and 914’s and more recently Boxsters and Caymans. My favorite of the Fuller fleet was what Jack referred to as “Old Ugly” a Yellow and Blue 914/6, that had an assortment of various parts, and used primarily for racing, DE and AutoX. Needless to say “Old Ugly” would not win any concours, but was well sorted and functional. B.J.was quite the ladies hot shoe and competed along with Jack for many years. The Bay Bottom Crawl was synonymous with the name Fuller, and for much of the 50 + years the Bay Bottom Crawl existed, they were the heartbeat of this event. For those that never heard of the Bay Bottom Crawl, it is not a PCA event. Its run by the Ecurie Vitesse Sports Car club headquartered in Key West, and might be described as a high speed, 2+ mile AutoX thru a mangrove swamp. In the years I attended, the Fullers were always instrumental in seeing that the event went smoothly and donated their RV to serve as the command post that monitored car movement thru each section of the course, and constant maintained radio contact with the 10 +worker stations. The Bay Bottom Crawl developed a number of traditions over the years but clearly the most memorable for Porsche owners was B.J. and her shouts of “Yeah Porsche” at the Saturday and Sunday awards ceremonies. Next month we will report on the Parade AutoX and hopefully some insight on where AutoX is going on a National level and best practices other regional AutoX programs utilize. Also important to mention is our request, again, for new autoX site locations. Please… if you have an “in”, or even a suggestion to a big parking lot, sports area, please let Steve know …Call me at 954292-3915

Tentative AX schedule for the remainder of 2021 Summer break....June-August Event #4 10/09/2021 @ Sebring or ??? Possibly a 2nd AutoX school with Suncoast Event #5 Tentative Mid November. Location TBA Event #6 Tentative early December possibly FAU or ??? Most of the above dates & sites are subject to change due to weather, availability and factors beyond our control.
