President’s Corner Ed Kohly- President

Our region keeps growing and setting new records every month, we have broken the 2,360 members mark for our region and I don’t think we could have reached this mile mark if it wasn’t for all of our volunteers in our region. Not only are we growing with membership count, but also we are growing with volunteers wanting to help our club grow and be the best we can be. In the next few days, we will have our Annual PotLuck Social at the Spangler’s home in Fort Lauderdale where we will be having live music and the best homemade dishes from our members. Later this month, we will be doing our annual drive to Conchy’s Joe’s Drive and Dine on Saturday (8/20). This drive is always a lot of fun and is well attended so hope you will register early to reserve your space. Conchy Joe’s is in Jensen Beach and we will be doing a stay over at the Marriot Hotel on the beach. It’s not

everyday you see 50 Porsches drive up the interstate together. It’s a lot of fun; just ask the members who attended our drive last month to Port Charlotte. This September also look out for the wine and cheese event where an actual chef will be coming in to pair wines with cheeses. This will be at the Kohly’s residence in Broward. This is the first of its kind, so come and see what all the fuss is about. There is a charge for this so go onto clubregisration to register. And we can’t forget the first of its kind pool party at the Big Chill in Key Largo. Spend the entire day in the pool with your Porsche friends or if you want, spend it in the ocean. Just come out and check this one out also. All food will be provided, in addition to live music but alcohol will be on your own. We also reserved a block of rooms at the nearby Marriott hotel for those who want to make a weekend out of it.

Looking ahead for the remaining 5 months of 2016, keep a look out for Driver’s Education and AutoX season to start again from summer vacation in September where we are doing a joint DE with our friends in the PCA Suncoast region. This will be a 2-day event in Sebring. Followed by our annual Stone Crabs Drive and Porsches’ by the Bay at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Miami in combination with the holiday party. We are will be wrapping up our 2017 planning meeting in August and we are working on scheduling exciting events, keep a look out for it on our website, Gold Coast Region PCA on Facebook, and our December’s Kassette. Remember this is your club so if we have any ideas of an event, email one of our social chairs. Until next month!! -Ed

ot, Hot, Hot! What are you doing to avoid the record high temperatures we are experiencing this summer? Many of you have gone to the mountains where the temperatures are more bearable compared to the south Florida heat. Another advantage is the twisty roads with elevation and the cool breeze felt while biking on traveling in your Porsche with the top down through the forest on a beautiful mountain road. Living in Florida we get used to the flat land and a change of location is very refreshing. My family just spent two weeks in North Carolina, Tennessee, and Alabama enjoying the different landscapes and cooler temperatures. As we returned and entered Florida, my temperature gauge read 103! We are lucky to have AC and

the ocean to cool us down. This month we are continuing our coverage of Zonefest that was held at Sebring. The event was attended by PCA members from each of the regions in zone 12 and a few from other PCA zones. We have several photo galleries of the events along with the winners of the Autocross, Rally, and Tech Quiz events. Congratulations to Bobby Varela and Peggy Raben who were the overall total points winners for all of the Zonefest events. For a great overview of the weekend event check out the From the Members article by Neil Ramgoolam who provided a great report of his experience at Zonefest. We have had so many great events to report on that we had to delay some of our coverage. The first event is the Das Renn

Treffen Miami Car Show. This was the second year of the event that was attended by many and continues to grow. Frank Spangler provided a great article and photos covering the event. Frank will also be hosting and performing at our upcoming Pot Luck Social. Another great event that was attended by our GCR members was the tour of Gunnar Racing. This event always fills quickly and our members are truly amazed at the historical stories and inventory of cars that Kevin provides. Don’t miss the two upcoming GCR social events this month. Flyers are at the bottom. If you have a article you would like to share with the members please send it to my attention. Roger

Gunnar Racing Tour… An event not to be missed by Steve Kidd On Saturday April 24, a group of close to 100 PCA members visited one of the most spectacular Porsche shops/ museums/collections in the world. For those that missed this opportunity, this event should remain on your bucket list until you can experience a visit to this facility. First of all, huge thanks to Kevin and Sharron Jeannette for hosting this event and sharing their pieces of Porsche history with the club. Kevin’s resume is impressive as he worked on many types of exotic or racing Porsches for some of the top teams, and later went on to open his own shop in West Palm Beach. At any given time there can be multiple exotics such as 911 RSR,904,906,908,910,917,959,956 ,962 RS Spiders or anything else that Porsche raced in the shop. Some cars find their way Gunnar Racing for a full ground-up restoration, while others are there for customization, returning a car to period correct status or repair. In addition to the race

cars there are early 911’s undergoing repair or customization, as well as an impressive collection of early VW’s. One particular historically significant VW bus was bought, sold for a tidy profit and re-purchased later with quite a story unfolding along the way. Another Porsche, one of the 959’s to run in the famous ParisDakar Rally was on display since the chassis was recently reunited with what is believed to be the original non turbo engine. Quite an accomplishment since the engine had been removed after a crash that cost this Porsche a race victory back in the 1980’s…..and there were only 2 of these engines made. Kevin has a story to tell about each of the cars, some of which he owns, did own or would like to own. The history is rich, detailed and peppered with facts that few people know and can recite. The tour went thru each of the buildings where each aspect of a repair or restoration is completed and then moved to the next phase. While many of the group could have stayed for hours more as Kevin answered questions and gave his perspective on the future of various models, the tour had to come to an end. After the event, some of the group headed over to Island Jacks for lunch, including Danny and Sharron Shields from Suncoast

region, who made the trip over from the Tampa bay area. Our thanks again to Kevin and his team for sharing this important piece of Porsche history. For those that like this sort of

event, another one is planned for 7/30 at a different collection in our region. We expect registration to open in early July, and again will be limited to 100 members.

2016 SOUTH FLORIDA DAS RENN TREFFEN Article and photos by Frank Spangler

This was the first time I have volunteered for a PCA Gold Coast Region involved event and it happened to be the Das Renn Treffen on Sunday, March 6th, 2016. The event was from 8 am to 4pm. My wife convinced me to volunteer after she had volunteered last year at this event and had a great time. The previous year, I was in New Orleans, LA performing at the French Quarter Festival at that time of the Porsche event. Christy sent photographs

more tracks Porsche continues to races on and of course, are competitive. For instance, here is a photo taken by Christy Spangler at night time of the #26 MOMO 911 Porsche at Daytona hauling A*#! on the front tri-oval. All of these fabulous racing Porsches were on display not just for the registered Porsche owners but the general public too. There was an enormous turnout of Porsche owners, Porsche lovers, curious

.

The big surprise of the day was that we had a special guest show up this year. Magnus Walker, a huge Porsche fanatic (not that we aren’t), who resides in London, England and travels around to various Porsche events to support our and his passion. Well, I have to say that even that day was long, hot and at times frustrating, I had and I hope everybody had, a great time at this years Das Renn Treffen. Being a volunteer has it own rewards and we (PCA Gold Coast Region) certainly could use more volunteers for all the events that we are involved with. If you would like to volunteer, please call Steve or Dottie at 954-946-3196 to do so. They can also be reached by e-mail at dottiekidd@bellsouth.net and/or Steve_Kidd@bellsouth. net to volunteer for an event or events. After a long but fun day, the Porsche’s that entered the “Peoples Choice Awards” winners are:

and also posted them on Facebook for all to see and it looked like an awesome event to be working. Christy has volunteered for several PCA Gold Coast Events in the past year and she assured me that it would be fun. Parkhaus 1 Porsche Performance Cars and Parts and our local Gold Coast Region PCA joined forces to put on a spectacular showing of Two Hundred Sixty Five (265) Porsches starting with the classics to the most current 2016 Porsches on the market. Included in the unbelievable mix were famous Porsches that raced on notorious tracks such as the infamous steep banks of the Daytona International Raceway, the hot, draining, exhausting, grueling flat and then extremely bumpy Sebring, the winding up and down elevations and long straight roads which are normally just roads for the local population or passersby until the lengthy classic Le Mans takes over for a week and there are still many

people and hopefully this event and all the knowledge that was shared with the general public will create a new generation of Porsche fanatics like us. All the participants were eager to speak to anyone who was interested in their model of Porsche. It was a fantastic time for all involved and I am looking forward to the next Das Renn Treffen in 2017. However, I must say that it was a hard days work for all that volunteered; not just for the Gold Coast PCA members but folks from Parkhaus 1 and others that assisted in putting this event on down in South Miami. Even the band, which was a very nice touch to the event, was burning up in the heat in our paradise, South Florida. Logistically, this was a very difficult event to pull off without a few minor bumps and mistakes along the way but everybody worked together as a team and resolved any problems that arose and quite frankly, we did one hell of a job.

Tech Corner : Very Foamy Article by Pedro P. Bonilla, Tech Editor

There are two words that don’t go well together: “Porsche” and “foam”.

What is this?

As anyone who has had a new (newer) Porsche for 4 or 5 years knows, the air conditioning vents start to spew bits of sticky dark stuff. This stuff comes out of every A/C vent including the windshield defrost and the footwell heating outlets.

With time, heat and humidity, all of the foam which makes up the air diverter dams in the A/C’s air handler system starts to deteriorate and crumble. As air is forced through, chunks of this foam starts to make its way to the air outlets and eventually make it out into the cabin. There is nothing you can do preventively to avoid it short of not keeping your Porsches longer than 4-5 years. The deterioration of the foam depends on several conditions: Time: 4-5 years after the manufacture date it starts to deteriorate Heat: The hotter the environment the quicker it will deteriorate Humidity: The more humid the environment the quicker it will crumble

You can also help to purge the system quicker by closing all the vents but one, running the A/C fan at it’s highest setting and putting a vacuum cleaner nozzle right on the open vent. Once this vent is cleared, close it and move to another one and repeat.

Therefore northern Porsches and those garaged and kept away from the sun and the elements will keep their foam a bit longer, but don’t get me wrong, even stored under the best conditions, if the car sees real world roads and conditions, that foam will deteriorate at some point. When it starts to happen you will first notice some very small “dirt-like” particles on your clothing and on the interior (dash, seats, carpet, etc.). As time goes on in a few more months you will notice the particles getting larger and larger and eventually you can see chunks of foam trapped behind the air vent slats. What can be done? You can open up the air handler system to remove and rebuild the air dams with new foam or tape (duct tape is used effectively) but this is very time consuming which can get expensive. Or, you can be patient, remove the foam chunks from the vents and wait. You can use a small pick tool to pull out the pieces of foam through the slats.

But the best advise I can give you is what I tell my customers: Wear goggles and don’t wear white! For more information on A/C foam and more, please visit my website: www PedrosGarage.com.

Zonefest 2016 ... From the Members by Neil Ramgoolam Having been a long time Porsche fan, when I moved to Miami from Western Canada back in 2013, I thought it would be a great idea to join PCA and get to know some people who shared the same passion. The activities have been a lot of fun (Stone Crab run, run to Key Largo … etc). I decided to participate in a PCA autocross event in Sunrise, FL, where I met Dottie Kidd, it was my first Autocross event. She spoke to me a lot about this thing called Zonefest and as I read the brochure and the itinerary it sounded like a fun weekend, including a Concours event, a Rally, an Autocross and a tour of the Ernie Renzetti car collection. Dinner and evening activities were included over the weekend. It sounded great. In fact my girlfriend Elissa mistakenly called it “FunFest Weekend”, which it eventually turned out to be! Perhaps there’s a name change in the works … Prior to the Zonefest 2016 event, there was a PCA-PBOC DE event at Sebring scheduled for early April this year, and I thought it might be fun and also a good opportunity to see the location of the 2016 Zonefest, so I signed up for the DE Event. What a perfect location for Zonefest! I’d never been to Sebring before, but I’ve seen many races and famous drivers over the years racing around this track. Pulling up to Sebring made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. So the Zonefest 2016 event finally came. The first Friday evening was a good chance to chill down after the week, wash your car at the provided car wash area at the side of the Chateau Elan right on the Sebring track and meet some of the folks coming in for the Zonefest event. Events kicked off on a warm and sunny morning on Saturday with the Councours event. I enjoyed being able to look down onto the Concours area from my balcony, which I quickly left to get closer to the cars for a better look. Among the awesome examples of Porsches were a pair of exceptional 356’s and a rare example of the early days; a Porsche Diesel Tractor! That was a big attention getter. The cars in the Councours event were exceptional; I have to confess that I was drooling over a white Porsche GT2 993 generation that was parked just outside of the Concours show area. Beautiful car and only 57 of these were made back in the 90’s. So with the concours event wrapping up around lunchtime and a chance to

cool down after being in the sunshine, I was really looking forward to the rally. All you had to do was drive the 80 mile loop, find the location of 12 photos and answer 24 trick questions, what could go wrong? Well, after the first two miles I was wondering if PCA would be providing couples counseling, but things settled down and we had a blast! The funniest part of the rally for me was coming to a T intersection and being a bit unsure if to turn right or left. Dottie’s husband Steve was a passenger in a yellow Boxter that came from the right, made a U turn in front of us and then headed back to the right. We turned left… A few hours later Steve and the yellow Boxter turned up at the Chateau Elan where the PCA members were staying, as the story goes, they took a long stop for ice cream, right!!! After a couple of hours driving in the Rally, nothing was more welcoming than the refreshments provided by Beena in the hospitality suite, which she was so kind as to provide. Being thirsty from the rally, I was happy to help Steve tap the keg of beer, it really went down well! There were many options for refreshments and snacks, and it was a nice social time to meet some of the folks in the PCA club from Zone 12 and share the funny stories from the rally adventures and wrong turns. The nicest people I’ve met since moving to Miami have been in the PCA club! The hospitality suite was followed by a nice sit down dinner that evening and a few laughs and more socializing with members that evening. With the Autocross the next morning, I decided it was best to get some rest after dinner that evening, so the keg partially survived to see another day. God loves Autocross. The forecast was for rain on Sunday, but the dark clouds approaching in the morning made a sharp turn and headed off in another direction. It was a hot day! I really enjoyed seeing the variety of cars that entered the autocross. A new GT3, GT4, 944’s, 964, a new 911 Turbo, a couple of 993s (one was mine), and a few other nice Porsches plus a couple of other brands as well. Walking the course prior to the event seemed straight forward until I realized that part of the course was the skidpad at the end of the course. That nice black polished surface put those new RE71R tires to the test! Those same tires that stuck like glue at the DE on the Sebring track a few weeks prior felt more like snow tires (yes, I’m from Canada) going around the skid pad.

It made for a fun and challenging Autocross course. What would an autocross be without a couple of spin outs? I was fortunate that I went on the course in the first run group. Being a hot day, it was good to get my runs in before the midday sun. After lunch, it was off for a tour of the Ernest Renzetti car collection at the Garage Mahal, now officially opened by Lori Renzetti in honor of her late husband. The property and car collection was amazing! This was a man that truly loved cars. His home was built from the ground up to accommodate moving and showcasing the cars in the collection. What a beautiful home for the cars with a beautiful view of the lake through the floor to ceiling glass windows. I think I found my new plans for a house. The Renzetti collection included Porsches, many VW Beetles, Isettas, and a couple of Messershmits which I’d never seen in person before, very impressive! Lori Renzetti was a perfect host, who also joined us at the dinner event that evening. So after a nice time at the Garage Mahal it was back to the Chateau Elan to have some refreshments and socialize with the PCA group in the hospitality suite prior to the dinner and awards evening. That evening events kicked off with cocktails and a chance to enter in the draws for some great door prizes. There were a long list of prizes for; Autocross events, DE Events, a full face racing helmet, and a host of other items. Steve Kidd did a great job of MC for the evening, although I’m not sure he ever got to finish his dinner. A few Zonefest zone 12 trophies were handed out, and I was fortunate to have received one of the awards for a podium finish for the Autocross event earlier that day. This was my second autocross, so it was unexpected but much appreciated! There were many awards handed out to well deserving folks in attendance. It was nice to have Lori Renzetti join our table for the evening after enjoying her collection at the Garage Mahal earlier that day. The evening gave me a good understanding of the level of volunteer work that goes on in PCA and an opportunity to meet various members from the other regions across Florida and beyond. Great people and a fun evening to wrap up what was a fun weekend! It may be called Zonefest, but to Elissa and I it will be always known as Funfest! Thank you PCA for an awesome event, and we’re looking forward to Zonefest 2017!
