President’s Corner Steve Kidd - President

By the time you read this article 2019 will be almost over, and we will have completed our GCR elections with the new officers/directors being officially announced at the Holiday Party at the Dauer Museum on December 7th. Hopefully you signed up for the Holiday party as this event will be a new twist from the traditional sit down banquets, that includes, but is not limited to, a museum tour, butler passed hors d’euvres (and other food/beverage options) with prizes, awards and most of all....fun. Our last big events for December will be Porsche Parade of Presents (drives to various children’s hospitals in our region to deliver checks and presents) This activity is also referred to as “Miles of Smiles” and more details will be available in coming e-mail blasts. As I write this article I can tell you lots of great activities are planned for 2020. The GCR Board has been working on a tentative calendar of events that includes many of the traditional activities, but also some new ones. Many events fill up quickly so register and pay early. As most of you know, registration for events is done electronically thru ClubRegistration.net. For those that are just getting started, setting up a Club Registration profile is quick and once a user name/ password is set up, provides a calender of events not only for Gold Coast Region, but other PCA regions. With all the upcoming activities also come opportunities to volunteer. All events need volunteers, but the bigger the event, the more volunteers are needed. Take for example the Porsche Parade that was held in Boca this summer. Remember seeing all those lavender shirts and floppy hats? A very high percent of those registered for Parade

also volunteered...My thanks to all those who volunteered and especially those from Gold Coast Region who most likely had the highest number of volunteer hours at the Boca Parade. While volunteering at a local event is great, volunteering at a National event can open new doors and create some lasting memories. With Q1 around the corner, let me outline some of the major events that will need volunteers: January: The Porsche Club Corral at the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona. If you have purchased a ticket and will be there for a few days of the race, consider volunteering for a 3-4 hour shift sometime during Jan24-26, with the most help needed on Saturday January 25th. Look for e-mail blasts in December or January with details February: The 48 Hours of Sebring Club Race...This is GCR’s big one...and the call for volunteers has already started. You can sign up for many volunteer positions on the 48 hour website http:// www.48hoursatsebring.com/ Volunteers are needed starting Wednesday January 29-Sunday February 2nd..Registering to volunteer for the “48”on line is easy and lets you pick the days, shifts and positions. Also when you volunteer you get a cool t-shirt, free lunch and free entry and parking. The best part is seeing some great Porsche racing, a DE and AutoX all at the same venue...all while seeing old friends and meeting new ones. March: Brings us the The Werks Reunion on Friday, March 6th at Amelia Island as well as the Porscheplatz at the 12 hours of Sebring March 20-21. A call for volunteers for these activities will go out in the next few months. In addition to volunteers at events, our region needs assistance in a few other areas...Here’s the details: AutoX site...we need a BIG parking lot, air strip or simular piece of pavement in the Tri-County area to hold our AutoX

|

events. In the past we have used shopping centers lots, sporting and gaming venues and school/government lots. We most recently used the BBT Center parking lot which was great...big, centrally located and reasonably priced. A repaving project put an end to that lot ...hopefully temporary, but it very well could be permanent. What we need is an “in” someone that has a connection to the property and can help us get our foot in the door. Do you know of a site?...are you the person with the “in”? Please call me at 954 946-3196 if you can help out finding a new AX site. This year many of our AX events were at Sebring in conjunction with Club Race or a regional DE. While this has proved doable, members have expressed a preference not to drive so far. A Community Service Project...Not to be confused with our charity efforts such as Joe DiMaggio Hospital. At Parade this is one of the most distinguished awards and focus seems to be more on helping those in need directly rather than collect cash donations. The winner this year was a region that worked on several Habitat for Humanity houses for low income families. Lots of rewarding sweat equity. Got an idea in mind....Give me a call...954 9463196 Attention New Members... Want to start getting involved and meet other members? One of the best ways to begin is to join in one of the Porsche and Pancakes breakfasts on the 1st Saturday of the month, held at 9 locations within our region. For those that are not morning people, there is and our 3rd Thursday socials at 4 different locations. No pre- registration, no cost other than your meal....Just show up and enjoy the cars and people. Wishing everyone Happy Holidays... Until next month......Steve

Editor’s Notes

It seems strange to say “It’s that time of year again” but we are completing another year and as I finish the 12th monthly publication I reflect back at where I started. It was December of 2007, I was president of Gold Coast and we did not have an editor. As they say the show must go on. A professional editor had promised that he would assume the duties until he found out that we had no staff and the position required many different functions. I

Roger Fabel- Editor

spoke with our PCA national newsletter chair and found that my background had prepared me with similar software products. The learning curve was easy and the publication was on schedule. It has been an enjoyable journey. That was 156 issues ago. Seems like a long time but time flies. This could not be done without help from GCR chairs and articles submitted by the members. Please keep them coming. I have placed a Job Position opening for members with publication production experience and photojournalism skills. Many regions operate with a staff but for the past thirteen years I have managed the position myself with some additional help from time to time. We do have a profession Graphics Artist that provides many of our ads and flyers. If you have the skills

required and would like to help with our monthly publication, please send me an e-mail or call. In this issue we have a special story from a husband and wife that traveled out west in their 356. A very enjoyable read and a brave adventure for a car that is 55 years old, but it is a Porsche. I hope you have enjoyed the events our team have worked hard to provide and will be involved with our 2020 program. Not all of our events are confined to south Florida as you can see from the colorful photos from our North Carolina trip. Hope to see you at the holiday party and the Sebring 48 Hour Club Race. Enjoy this special time of year with your family.

Gold Coast heads to the Mountains by Ed Blair

There are few things in nature as grand as the fall colors in the Blue Ridge Mountains! Add in cooler fall temperatures, clear skies and butter smooth winding roads and you have a recipe for the perfect first annual Gold Coast Porsche trip to Western North Carolina. On October 23, roughly 50 PCA members decided to make the journey from Florida and were rewarded with some of the best driving in the country. The fun started on day two. A couple of hours after leaving our hotel we found ourselves in the mountains around the highlands, an upscale town with shopping, restaurants and stunning scenery all around. Our first lunch stop would turn out to be one of many great restaurants we would encounter on our journey. If you happen to be a foodie, the Carolinas are the place for you.

It seems every place we stopped had the most incredible food. That night we had a fire pit going as we rested up for the exciting drive the following day. On day three it was off to the Dragon and points west. First it was a quick stop at Deals Gap at the top of the Dragon for some trinkets and then 318 curves in 11 miles. Don’t let the name of this road intimidate you, Porsches are made for this sort of thing. We stopped at the bottom of the Dragon at Chilhowee Lake to recap the drive. For many on this trip it was the first time they had driven a Porsche in the mountains. You could feel the energy and excitement. Once everyone was comfortable, we did it again in reverse! This time some of us were sure to slow down just enough so Killboy, the resident photographer on the road, could get some good photos of

the cars. Lunch the third day was at the Nantahala Outdoor center at the Rivers End Restaurant overlooking the river. For dinner on day three it was a BBQ dinner for all attendees at the Hotel. Day four was an up and back drive along 441. For those unaware 441 in North Carolina is a scenic highway. There are no car dealers or tire shops along the way! Saturday night we boarded a bus to Cherokee and spent an evening at the casino having dinner. Sunday was the Cherohala Skyway, a scenic pass that takes you from Western North Carolina into the Tellico Plains in Eastern Tennessee. We were rewarded with crisp clear skies and 68 degrees for the high. Convertible weather to say the least. Who is ready for next year?

Calling All PCA Volunteers Paul Raben, Volunteer Co-chair The 48 Hours At Sebring Club race committee has begun making plans for the 2020 race to be held January 30 thru February 2, 2020. It is time for all Gold Coast and Suncoast members to start planning how they can get involved. It is your opportunity to give back to your region and be involved with the most successful Club Race in PCA and help raise money for region activities and The Ronald McDonald House charity. Start making plans and reservations to make it a weekend of fun and excitement. Where will you be? What will you be doing? What could you be doing that would possibly equal spending a weekend at world famous Sebring International Raceway with about 500 Porsches? Talk about a car show: this is the largest Porsche only racing event in the world – in fact, it is the largest single marque automobile racing event in the world! How could you miss it, especially when it is almost in your back yard! Last year’s 26th annual event was a great success: we had over 450 participating Porsches. Now, its the time to start planning on how you can assist in this great event. Make hotel reservations for the days you plan to attend. Pick from the available assignments listed below. This

is a joint event consisting of friends from Gold Coast Region and Suncoast Region, the 27th edition will be even bigger and better. The 48 Hours at Sebring has grown into the largest PCA Club Race in the country. We expect to sign up over 350 racers and Advanced Solo drivers in the first two days of registration. This means we will need volunteers to help us run this huge event more than ever. Why should you care? If you are a PCA member that has been standing on the sidelines, wanting to become involved, but unsure of actually attending your first event, this is a perfect opportunity to see what PCA is all about, and meet a group of really nice people! You will be asked to work for a few hours at a job that is actually more fun than work, you get a nice T-Shirt, free lunch and free Friday night vendor showcase party. You also just might meet someone who just won the Daytona 24 Hour race, or past winners of Daytona 24, Sebring 12 Hour or Le Mans 24 Hour, or maybe someone who has won them all. For sure you will not find a better gathering of Porsches and Porsche people anywhere. The Club race raises thousands of dollars for Ronald McDonald House each year and provides the Gold Coast and Suncoast regions funds to support Socials, Drivers

Ed and AutoX programs and help local charities. What can you do to help?

At Track Registration We need 4 or 5 people to assist with getting the driver’s checked in, this is an indoor sitting job that begins at 7:00 AM Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The first couple of hours are the busiest so you need to be a morning person.

The Grid We have a lot of people returning from last year to work the grid, but we still need a few more for each day. You need to be in good shape as it entails a lot of standing and walking. Your primary responsibilities are. 1. Helping get each car in its assigned spot based on information on a timing sheet provided by Timing & Scoring. 2. Doing a quick check of the car to make sure that it is not dripping any liquids, engine & trunk lids are closed and secured. 3. Checking the driver to ensure that he or she is buckled in, with helmet on and secure. 4. Direct traffic at several locations to assist racers to the grid or back to their paddock area after each run..

Timing and Scoring We need about 5 volunteers each day. You will assist the stewards in identifying the cars as they go past the start/finish line to verify that their timing equipment is working properly. You will also assist in the preparation of the timing sheets for distribution to the grid. This is a nice comfortable inside job but it is the heart beat of the race.

Tech and Scales We need volunteers each day to help check the Advanced Solo group cars for tire pressure, Torque lug nuts and check helmets, brake lights. Thursday and Friday are the busiest days for tech. Scales are open Friday through Sunday. The race cars are weighed on the scales to make sure they are the proper weight for their car and class. Volunteers are needed to push the cars on the scales.

The Corners We need volunteers to assist the SCCA corner-workers at each corner. This is truly where the action is! Working the corners is a fun and action packed assignment. Each corner throughout the track is manned by 1-2 professional SCCA corner workers. For each corner, we assign a maximum of 2 volunteers to assist the SCCA corner

workers. We have many volunteers who return each year and request a specific corner or corner worker. It’s amazing how much you can learn while watching skilled drivers go through a corner lap after lap. There is no better way to get closer to the action unless you are actually driving!! The responsibilities for the corner are: 1.You are an extra set of eyes and ears for the SCCA corner worker, helping observe the activities on the track; 2.In the event of an incident the corner worker may ask you to hold or wave the appropriate flag. 3. You may be asked to assist with any reporting of an on track incident. Notes. At no time would you go over the wall! Long pants and closed-toe shoes are required. Please do not wear colors that would be confused as a flag, for example red or yellow. White or the 48 Hour t-shirt are perfect.

Pit Marshalls This is a Sunday-only job which starts around 10:00 AM with a meeting with the race steward. This position is needed during the Enduro. Each driver is required to make a 5 minute pit stop during the each Enduro.

Dec 2019

|

We need at least 12 people to observe the pit stops. The responsibilities for Pit marshals are, 1.Observe and report to PCA scrutinizer any spilled fuel etc. 2.Observe and report any crew member over the wall without proper equipment 3.Make sure that the maximum number of crew over the wall is not exceeded. 4.Enforce all rules as instructed by PCA Scrutinizers. Notes. Long pants and closed-toe shoes are required. Training will be provided by PCA officials. Miscellaneous Positions. We need other volunteers to help with the Friday and Saturday night activities. This is where we raise the most money for the charities. We also have positions avalible in traffic control. Lastly we need a few other volunteers to take on whatever task that may come up. + To Volunteer go to www.48hoursatsebring.com click on Volunteers, For more information please contact Paul Raben praben@gmail.com or David Herndon Davidh2310@gmail.com.

6700 Miles, a Dead Generator and the Mystery Bolt article and photos by Paul and Peggy Raben

W

e planned for a year to drive the 356 out to Flagstaff Arizona for the 356 Registry’s West Coast Holiday. If you own a 356 and have never been to either of the Registry’s East Coast or West Coast Holiday you are really missing out on a truly great experience! We got a map of the U.S. and started to plan our route using mostly back roads so we could stay off the major highways that are mind numbingly boring. They are okay if you have a fast car and are trying to cover a lot of real estate, but a 55 year old 356 does not fit that description and we were in no hurry. Our plan was to find the best route to visit the cities we wanted to see and along the way camp at some of the national parks that were on our wish list. To prepare the 356 for the trip I had a list of things I thought would break, fail or possibly strand us on the side of some deserted back country road that I would replace or get repaired before hitting the road. Now we have had mechanical issues on almost every long trip we have taken and I have been able to get us up and running again but I was not ready to push my luck. Most of the parts

22

replaced were part of the steering and suspension which was fortuitous as many roads were challenging to say the least. Another wise decision was to install a brand new Optima battery and an electric fuel pump as a back up to the mechanical pump just in case ( if the mechanical pump fails it is not impossible to fix but is way too much work to do on the side of the road). I will add that I secured two jack stands in the engine compartment so if we had the anticipated breakdown, I wasn’t going to work under the car using the jack as I have done in the past (there were some very impressed 356 owners at the event upon seeing them). The work on the car is done now we have to think about packing it. We used the well known 10 pounds of stuff in a 5 pound bag theory of packing. We packed a medium size cooler, 2 backpacks, a tent, 2 sleeping bags, 2 mats to sleep on, a tent, a Coleman stove and gas canisters to cook with, a hanging clothes bag, 2 folding chairs, extra oil and filter for an oil change in Flagstaff, every part I thought I was going to need just in case, 50 pounds of hand tools and battery powered impact

Paris, Texas wrench and inflater, more clothes in those vacuum storage bags, a water proof car cover and finally the one item that helped get us home a Ryobi battery powered inverter (more on this later). Our first destination was Tallahassee for no other reason other than it was 460 miles and a good test to see what we were in for. So we literally squeezed into the car and headed north at a blazing 60 to 65 miles an hour. Next stop was Natchez, Mississippi for two days. This is a great city right along the Mississippi River where we had a wonderful time. Natchez is made up of historic buildings, great restaurants and extremely friendly people that exemplify Southern hospitality. Living in South Florida and leaving the area we were happy to get to a city with little traffic, no aggressive drivers and politeness. Needless to say everyone we ran into were a little surprised to see us driving around in the 356 and were very interested in our plan to head out west to Flagstaff. After Natchez our only planned way point was Paris, Texas because their

claim to fame is a scaled down version of the Eiffel Tower. On the way there we encountered one of the worst roads we have ever been on and eventually produced the “mystery bolt” even though we did not know it at the time. We eventually get to Paris with their Eiffel Tower and of course had to take a picture of the car in front of it. Two young men from the high school caught up with us there (after chasing us through town) to get a good look at the car, they were very excited. We loved that as they may be the future 356 care givers we need to step up for us old timers. At this point we are just trying to get further down the road to sort of stay on our very fluid schedule. We stopped in Sherman, Texas which is just another way point and non-descript city. Each time we stopped the routine was to unpack a bunch of stuff and the cooler and to check the oil (add some of course) and give the car a once over to make sure everything was still where it belonged. The first national park we planned to visit is Great Sand Dunes so to get there we went through Amarillo, TX and headed Northwest into Colorado. This was first camping site and probably the one we liked the least. Because we got there so late we had to stay outside the park at a not so nice rocky campground. This place was the start of the coating of dirt the 356 received inside and out. In the morning we visited the park and the Dunes which is an amazing place I can’t really describe other than it seems so out of place in the plains and mountains that are on either side of them. In the morning before we hit the road I did the routine check of oil and noticed there was a light film of oil covering most of the engine and a little pool of oil under the crankshaft pulley. Now what? Keeping the apparent oil leak in mind we headed on to Mesa Verde National Park to camp and see the Native American Ruins throughout the park. This campsite was one of the nicest and the park had some really great roads but because we had overloaded the car we had a little trouble with going over some very high peaks. Twice the oil temp got so high we had to stop and let the engine cool

down. Before we left for the next camping spot, Hovenweep National Monument, I did the engine inspection and determined the seal on the pulley end of the crankshaft was leaking oil and it was spraying the whole engine compartment but only while the engine was running so I figured as long as I kept the oil level up it was no big deal. So off we went stopping to see Canyons of the Ancients, Natural Bridges NM, Monument Valley, Navajo Nation and more. Our last stop before finally heading to Flagstaff was the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. You can only visit the North rim from May to October so the timing was perfect. We have visited the South rim a few times and honestly after visiting the North rim it is much prettier and much less crowded and wonderfully peaceful. We stayed in a great log cabin (with hot shower) at the lodge, hiked and the food selections were good, be sure to try their elk chili. Guess what - there is a wonderful 50 mile round trip drive in the park that was full of curves and elevation changes that the 356 was made for - FUN! Heading away from the Grand Canyon south to Flagstaff - about 70 miles North of Flagstaff we did a maintenance stop to check the oil leak and let it cool down. This is the when the fun happened. When I looked in the engine compartment

Mississippi in Natchez Miss. I found the mystery bolt. I was just sitting there and to this day I have no idea where it belongs. This also the point where the generator died and to top it off in my haste I lost my only pair of eyeglasses that weren’t sunglasses. So to say the least this was not a fun moment of the trip. We are in the middle of nowhere with no cell phone service and a long way to get anywhere to get help and despair is setting in. What happened next that made us feel a little bit better was two other 356’s on their way to Flagstaff pulled over to see if they could help. Our new friends suggested we pull into the rest area that was 30 miles ahead and see what we can do. In the average modern automobile with an alternator you can’t drive very far if it isn’t working, but according to our fellow 356’ers we should be able to make it to the rest area and eventually on to Flagstaff with no problem as long as the battery is in good shape and we don’t turn on the lights. We made it to Flagstaff with the dead generator light staring at me from the gauge and another 350 miles on tours that were part of the event with no problem. As hard as I tried I couldn’t find a generator in time before we had to head back so I bought a trickle charger and would take the battery out every night and charge and put it back in the morning. There were

other 356 owners that have had this very common problem happen to them and professed to have driven cross country using this technique. This nice to hear as we WERE driving cross country back to Florida and it was going to take at least 6-7 days. I will say I had some very kind offers from friends including a very nice offer to take the generator out of their 356 and ship it to me (thanks Steve)! It’s not a hard job to change the generator but it is a lot of work to complete on the road. The day we were leaving to head back I changed the oil and filter, checked the engine, which was now covered in an oily dirty coating from the road and a leaky crank shaft oil seal (which had mysteriously fixed itself, although the mystery bolt was still in the ashtray and had not returned to its home.) Then did a complete examina-

I mentioned earlier in the article I brought along the Ryobi inverter along with batteries for my power tools. This is what gave us the confidence we needed to press on and still make stops to sight see and camp on the way back. I plugged the trickle charger into the inverter’s 120volt outlet and would every few hours of driving connect it to the hot and ground coming from the dashboard clock and inject 1.5 volts back into to the electrical system, just like a generator but only less electrical output. I also could check the battery status from the same location with my volt meter and could know when the voltage had dropped enough to warrant turning the trickle charger on. We made stops at the Petrified Forest and saw the balloons landing at the end of the day in Albuquerque during the cities yearly Hot Air Balloon Fest. We drove through Roswell, AZ which was a waste of time and drove on roads in the middle of nowhere with no one in sight for hundreds of miles. We made our final camping stop in Hot Springs National Park, Arkansas which is right in the middle of downtown! It also

Cliff Palace in Mesa Verde At this point we were ready to head home. Using our smart phones we located some funky old hotels that were very inexpensive, clean and had a safe feel. None offered the “free breakfast” that the larger chains offered but we felt that it was a good trade-off to get some local flavor in exchange for a cheap breakfast. At every stop on our journey there were persons interested in the car and many had stories of “the one they regret having sold” or in at least 3 cases stories of a 356 being the “family car” and all the trips (and camping, too) that were remembered fondly. It is nice to think of all the joy we brought not only to ourselves but to all we encountered during this tour of our beautiful country. As soon as we get the generator back, a new high efficiency oil cooler and all the new parts to replace the worn out ones I will put the engine back together. Right after that we start all over planning for next year’s 356 Registry’s West Coast Holiday which is in Bend Oregon! We are just hoping to find out where that darn mystery bolt goes before next year’s trip.

356 home made A.E.D. that helped get us home! had a wonderful road through the park that was old and narrow (one way) with lots of banked turns and elevation changes. The city itself is a great old historic town with lots to do and see.
