President’s Corner Dan Doyle - President
Hello, everyone!! January was an absolute blur! I guess this was punishment for taking time off for the holidays! I hope everyone made it through and that you’re all sticking to your New Year’s resolutions. I know I’m trying to do so but, boy, is it hard! January brought us the Rolex 24 at Daytona, one of North America’s most prestigious sports car races. If you had the opportunity to attend, you know what an amazing experience it was. Many of us were able to see the race from the infield. It’s hard to describe the speed of the cars from that perspective but FAST is putting it mildly. For those of you that helped out at the Porsche tent, thank you! Your ser-
vice was much appreciated. I’m sure that the PCA members who stopped by the tent were equally thankful as they took respite from the elements and enjoyed complimentary snacks and drinks. This month we have the 48 Hours at Sebring on February 1-4. The event runs over four-days beginning with a Racer DE and is then followed by a three-day PCA sanctioned Club Race. The event as a regional club race for the Porsche Club of America. The 48 Hours at Sebring is the single largest PCA Club Race in the country attracting nearly 400 entrants and over 3,000 drivers, crews, volunteers and PCA Member families. Please volunteer for the event if you can do so. You won’t

be disappointed. As usual, Porsches & Pancakes is on the first Saturday of the month. Please take the time to join other Porsche fans and talk about your favorite subjects: your car and Porsche! Also, we have our Thursday Socials on the third Thursday of every month where you can do the same thing! Please check your emails and the calendar on our website for updated times and locations. These socials are a great way to get to know new members and make them feel welcome! I’m still looking forward to seeing all of you in 2018! Drive alert and safe!

Editor’s Notes
Once again we transition from a holiday time of celebration with our families to the race track to celebrate with our PCA family. Each year gets off to a great start in Daytona with the running of the 24 Hour Rolex race. It is fun to visit the garages, learn from the Porsche engineers, and experience the Rolex for 24 hours of endurance racing. One week later we travel to Sebring. The 48 Hours at Sebring is the largest PCA club race in the world. This year we celebrate the 25 anniversary of this event that is partnered by Suncoast
Roger Fabel- Editor
and Gold Coast regions of PCA along with the national PCA Club Race committee. The event is also supported by many sponsors including a new sponsor, PCNA. The race is presented by Champion Porsche. The event is not one long race but several track events starting Thursday for club race drivers and advanced solo drivers. Practice and qualifications continue thru Friday. Racing begins on Saturday with the final races on Sunday. The events are run by volunteers that make the race possible. No other race event will provide yo this close access to

helping with the running of a Porsche race. Next month we will provide coverage in the Kassette and on our web site. If you have never attended these events, you are missing a lot of racing action in your backyard. Following Sebring the 12 hour race will be held on Mar 15-18. We are not all about racing but with our great climate and world class historical tracks, the first three months are based around racing. Please check our calendar for other GCR events and enjoy your 2018 with fellow Roger PCA members.

Evacuating to the Porsche Experience Center By Dennis Lai Nobody could have predicted the Porsche Experience Center in Atlanta would become our designated “evacuation location” for Hurricane Irma. They say everyone has their own story to tell on what happened when it comes to hurricanes. You either run left, run right, or you hunker down. This is our story of how an unplanned trip put us at the Porsche Experience Center courtesy of Irma. It was 1am on Wednesday Sept. 6th. My wife and I had finally secured our house with shutters and hunkered down the two Porsches in the garage. I took one last look at the Cayman and the 997S with a heavy heart and prayed to god it wasn’t going to be the last time I get to see them whole. We had decided to evacuate after grim predictions the monster Cat-5 storm was on a direct collision course with S. Florida come Saturday or Sunday. The Porsches will have to stay behind. I almost cried. But we will need to simplify the run by taking just one vehicle to avoid refueling or mechanical issues. It was the safest way. So we stuffed our diesel-powered VW Golf daily-driver (pumps often still have diesel even when gasoline is sold

out) with supplies and canned fuel before heading for the Turnpike. You would think driving ahead of the crowd at 1am in the middle of the night would amount to just a trickle of traffic on the highways. Wrong. So wrong. This was the Mass Florida Exodus. Our plan was to drive north as far as we can near Atlanta. What normally should have been a 9-hour trip became a 22-hour marathon drive. It was at least an orderly exodus. We finally reached southern Georgia. But with very limited hotel vacancies in the area, we were forced to go further to hotels in Alabama. Eventually, we found a longer term stay at a sweet couple‘s house 40 minutes outside of Atlanta via AirBnB. As we settled our temporary life in Atlanta, we tried to make the best of our situation. We soaked in the local culture and visited little quaint & country towns like Carrollton and Villa Rica. Places we thought we would never visit. Folks there were very friendly and accommodating. They genuinely cared about our wellbeing as displaced Floridians. It’s times like these we felt America has a fighting chance to be united again. At any rate, I then got a call from my

dear friend and club member Andy Share; he rode out the storm in S. Florida and made it out unscathed, phew. He then suggested an awesome idea to me – go visit the Porsche Experience Center in Atlanta and enjoy a meal at their award-winning Restaurant 356. Brilliant! All of a sudden, I realized we can turn this sad trip around and report back to the PCA on our experience at Porsche. So on a whim, we booked a VIP Tour and off we went. Located on One Porsche Drive next to the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, the Porsche Experience Center is also Porsche’s US headquarters. In order to gain access, you must book your tour ahead of time. They usually run about 3 tours per week, so book ahead if you plan on going. The building itself is architecturally impressive and follows a design language similar to other Porsche buildings, including the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart. Designed by the world-renowned HOK architectural firm, the newly constructed center houses 450 Porsche employees and a 1.6-mile test track. The track includes six driving modules designed to demonstrate the capabilities of different Porsche models. It weaves around the courtyard area, and can be viewed from both the Restaurant 356 and the Porsche Café’s patio. The VIP Tour includes a 2-lap joy ride around the track in a Porsche of your choosing driven by a professional instructor. For a more intense experience, you can also book a Driving Experience which allows you to drive any new Porsche around the track with driving instructions and lessons. We didn’t get a chance to do that due to time constraints. After all, we were still hurricane-displaced Floridians. As a photographer, the best part of the tour for me was a chance to
visit the “secret stash” of classic Porsches at the gallery located at the lower floors. What is so special there? How about a red 1952 Type 540 America Roadster. That’s right, it’s one of the few remaining America Roadsters and was originally owned by infamous racer Johnny von Neumann. Due to its rarity and history, this car would easily fetch 7-8 million dollars at auction. Other tasty displays: a 1989 959 (959!!), a 918, a Carrera GT, an original 550 Spyder, a 962 race car, a never-to-be-seenanywhere else 1985 911 Speedster Prototype with a tiny windshield, and many others. Down the hall is the official Porsche Restoration garage. Customers can bring in their vintage Porsches to undergo full restorations with original Porsche parts. Technicians can be seen working on classics, and completed restorations are
displayed in a separate gallery. On the day we were there, various restored samples were on display, everything from 356s to 964s, 993 Turbo S, 928, and a couple of 930s. They are factory-new now. Imagine how proud their owners must be. Interestingly, the Porsche Experience

Center also doubles as the Avenger’s Headquarters in the “Captain America: Civil War” movie. I’m not a comics nerd, but the tour guide told us the super heroes were filmed right inside the classics gallery. And a large wooden table at the gal-

lery was used as a prop for a S.H.I.E.L.D meeting where the actors would gather. And no worries, none of the classic Porsches were damaged or hurt in the filming. But it is appropriate how the contemporary architecture of the facility has been chosen for such a film. Afterwards, we enjoyed a delightful lunch at the Restaurant 356 located upstairs next to the employee café. The restaurant has a magnificent view overlooking the 1.6-mile test track. Make sure to book a table ahead of time too – you won’t be able to get a table as a walk-in. Prices are reasonable and the executive chef always has a few gourmet specials you won’t want to pass up. Highly recommended. It was nice to be in a fantasy Porsche setting away from the thoughts of the hurricane for a while. The Experience Center became a

sanctuary for us during our time of need. It was a nice break from reality. We have been extremely lucky, and we thank god for keeping us safe. So it’s true that everyone has their own hurricane story. And all things happen for a reason. If it wasn’t for Irma, we would not have gone to the Porsche Experience Center on a whim. It became the pinnacle of our hurricane run. Luck was on our side, as our beloved S. Florida was spared. We all dodged the bullet unscathed this time. When we got back home, I opened the garage door and found the two Porsches unharmed and likely napped through the storm. Our prayers to those who have been much less fortunate in Puerto Rico and the islands. Let’s all pitch in and donate to our Caribbean neighbors so we can tell another good story of how we can unite and extend a helping hand to our brothers and sisters at a time of need.

Tech Corner :
Sensored Article by Pedro P. Bonilla, Tech Editor
If you drive a newer Porsche (from the 90s and forward) it is SENSORED! The newer the Porsche, the more SENSORED it is. This whole article is completely SENSORED!
Obviously, I’m referring to the myriad of sensors that keep your Porsche running. You think I’m exaggerating when I say myriad? Let’s try to enumerate some of them and explain their use and importance. But first, What is a Sensor? A sensor is a device that detects or measures a some type of input from the physical environment and records, indicates, or otherwise responds to it. This specific input could be light, heat, moisture, pressure, or any one of a great number of other environmental phenomena. Coolant Temperature Sensor It keeps tabs on coolant temperature so the car doesn’t overheat. It will interact with a light on the dash if the coolant temp goes too high and alert you of the situation. Always check this gauge while driving. Ambient Temperature Sensor Installed in the front bumper it measures ambient temperature in order to determine how much cooling or heating is necessary for cabin comfort. Cabin Temperature Sensor Hidden inside the dash, it monitors the cabin’s temperature, sending the data to the HVAC system. There may be more than one of these sensors if you have individual temperature controls. Engine Bay Temperature Sensor Installed inside the engine bay, it determines the need for the electric blower to activate to keep the engine bay from overheating. Engine Air Intake Temperature Sensor Installed in the airbox it keeps tabs of incoming air temperature. The data is used by the engine management computer DME or ECU to obtain the perfect air-to-gas ratio.

Die Porsche
Kassette |
February 2018
Oil Temperature Sensor Installed in the oil pump housing it monitors the engine’s oil temperature and will trigger a warning signal if too low. Transmission Fluid Temperature Sensor Installed in the Tiptronic and/or PDK it monitors the transmission fluid’s temperature to keep it operating optimally. A/C Temperature Sensor Monitors the cooling/heating of the air in the blower box of the HVAC system. A/C Airflow Sensor Monitors the amount of air flow being produced by the blower. Alarm Sensor Monitors any movement inside the cabin and sends a signal to the alarm unit. Crankshaft Position Sensor Installed next to the bell housing it “reads” the crankshaft’s position. It’s also called the Top Dead Center (TDC) sensor. Camshaft Position Sensor One in each engine bank, they monitor the movement of the cams for valve-timing purposes. This is especially important for cars equipped with variable timing such as Variocam and Variocam Plus. Oxygen Sensor Installed before and after the primary catalytic converters they monitor the amount of oxygen present in the exhaust before and after going through the cats. The DME then determines how well the fuel mixture was “consumed”. Normally there are 4 per vehicle. These are the most unnecessarily replaced sensors. Coolant Level Obviously, this one monitors the level of coolant. It’s located on the coolant reservoir, towards the bottom. A light on the dash will alert you if level is low. If it is low, find out why and don’t just top it off.
Gasoline Level Sensor This sensor tells you how much fuel is in the tank. The sensor itself is immersed in gasoline, inside the tank, right next to the fuel pump. It interacts with the gauge cluster to visually give you the information. Windshield Washer Level Sensor Very similar to the coolant level sensor, this one tells you when you are almost out of windshield washer fluid. Top off as soon as the low level message appears. Oil Level Sensor Keeps tabs on how much oil is in the engine and will set off an alarm if not enough oil is present. Many times a second sensor is enclosed in the same housing, the Oil Temperature Sensor which makes sure that the oil (and therefore the engine) doesn’t overheat. TPMS Sensor Tire Pressure Monitoring System sensors are located one in each wheel. They are battery-powered pressure sensors that communicate with the car’s electronics and monitor each tire’s individual pressure and many times the tire’s temperature as well. These sensors, because they are battery powered, should be replaced every time tires are changed to ensure that they work properly through the life of the tires. These are the ones that let you know if you have a puncture, or are loosing air pressure in a tire. Parking Sensors Give you an audible “beep-beep-beep” as your car’s bumper (front or rear) approaches an obstacle or another car. These are visible as “buttons” on each bumper. There are 4 or 5 per bumper. This type of sensor is called a proximity sensor. Mass Airflow Sensor Also known as the MAF, this important sensor measures the amount of air that goes into the intake tube. It then sends the information to the DME, which in turn calculates how much gasoline the injectors need to spray in order for the mixture to be 14.7:1 or at the stoichiometric point. Most often, when you get the Check Engine Light (CEL) the MAF has something to do with it. Brake Wear Sensor There is one sensor generally on every brake pad, so a total of 8 are usually present. As the brake pads wear, they get thinner and thinner. Eventually the sensor, which is inserted in a small hole in the brake pad is exposed and shorts out with the brake rotor, setting
off the “Brake wear light” in the dash. Generally when the brake wear light comes on, the sensor must be replaced. Oil Pressure Sensor Located on one of the valve covers it either shows actual oil pressure (Carrera) or just a light on the dash (Boxster & Cayman) when the pressure is too low. These generally measure pounds per square inch (psi) or BAR (1 BAR = 1 atmosphere = 14.5 psi). Fuel Pressure Sensor Installed in the fuel injection rail it monitors the fuel pressure present at the injectors. It interacts with the fuel pressure regulator to maintain optimal pressure. A/C Pressure Sensor Keeps tabs of the pressure inside the A/C system to protect the compressor in case of an anomaly. A/C Evaporator Anti-Ice Sensor This sensor protects the air conditioner’s evaporator from freezing by sensing ice build-up on the evaporator’s fins. Immobilizer RFID Sensor This sensor, in the form of a mini pill or “grain of rice”, is embedded inside the ignition key’s fob. It sends an encoded signal to the car’s Central Locking Unit (CLU) that will only allow the car’s engine to crank (start) if it matches the same signal in it’s memory. One of the best anti-theft devices. (RFID = Radio Frequency Identification) Engine Knock Sensor Looks for telltale engine vibrations caused by knocking. If present, the DME retards timing. We have seen some times when people have replaced the engine or transmission mounts for the “performance” or “racing” type, that the car loses power. If this happens it could be the knock sensors miss-reading the engine vibrations. Yaw-rate Sensor Also known as a Rotational Speed Sensor. It is a gyroscopic device that measures a Porsche’s angular velocity around its vertical axis. The angle between the car’s heading and the car’s actual movement direction is called the slip angle, which is related to the yaw-rate. This sensor is part of the Porsche Stability Management (PSM) system. If too much yaw rate is detected, the PSM will slow down one or more wheels to correct the problem. Speed Sensor There are multiple speed sensors within a Porsche. Some monitor the speed of the wheels, the transmission, the flywheel, etc. The signal is sent to the corresponding control unit such as the Gauges (speedometer), Cruise Control, ABS control unit, DME, etc.
Steering Angle Sensor As its name implies, it monitors the angle of the steering wheel but not just for alignment of the wheel but also sends a signal to the PSM unit letting it know how much steering input the driver is having to use for a particular maneuver. The PSM then determines whether it should intervene or not. Airbag Sensor Depending on the car and model year the can be from 1 to over 12 airbag sensors in a Porsche. These sensors when actuated in a collision, immediately send a signal to the corresponding airbag(s) to deploy and therefore protect the occupant. Passenger Occupancy Sensor is a weight-sensitive element that notices if there is more than a certain amount of weight in a passenger’s seat. This is used for people who put their babies in the front seat don’t have the airbag deploy into the back of the infant’s head in a collision, but a heavier passenger will get the airbag protection if required. ABS Sensor There are several sensors in the ABS System. Their main function is to determine when a wheel is about to skid due to braking or road conditions and not allow the particular wheel to lock up therefore keeping the car tracking in a controllable manner. Accelerator Pedal Sensor Senses the position of the accelerator pedal for cars with electronic (drive-by-wire) throttle bodies. The signal from this sensor tells the DME how much gas the driver is requesting and
Meticulous wheel Repair And refinishing since 2000.
therefore counteracts with the correct amount of air by opening or closing the throttle body to match that request. Throttle Position Sensor In cars that have a cable-operated throttle body, this sensor monitors the position of the throttle body’s butterfly valve. The signal is sent to the DME for air mixture purposes. Rain Sensor Monitors for rain droplets on the windshield and can automatically trigger the wipers for you. Interior Monitoring Sensor This is a motion detector which monitors the cabin and triggers the alarm if it senses movement while the alarm is on. Headlight Leveling Sensor Automatically levels the headlight beams adjusting and compensating for added weight due to passengers and/or heavy items in the trunk(s). And these are just the usual ones. Newer cars have even more sensors such as: Intelligent Cruise Control Sensor This sensor basically sends a radar signal forward so it can monitor the distance of the vehicle in front. It can then maintain a safe distance and is able to accelerate, decelerate and brake in order to maintain that safe distance. Lane Change Sensor Monitors the sides of the vehicle and advises the driver by either an audible tone, a stiffening of the steering wheel or both as to the departure of a lane when the corresponding turn signal is not in use. This is a safety sensor in case the driver gets distracted or falls asleep and the vehicle starts to leave its lane. Blind Spot Sensor Monitors your Porsche’s rearview blind spots. When a vehicle is in one of your blind spots it alerts you with a visual warning light on the corresponding rearview mirror and/or with an audible “beep”.
Custom painting, polishing. High-speed balancing. Vibration diagnostics.
Automatic High Beam Sensor When set to “on”, the sensor monitors incoming traffic and dims the high beam so as to not blind incoming traffic. Once traffic is past it can then automatically set the high beams for safer driving at night. This is effective for highway use. You can expect exponentially more sensors once cars have the capability of driving themselves. Complete SENSORSHIP!

Event 3 Back to Sebring for a fast course on really grippy concrete. I wish more folks would make the trip out to Sebring as this site is similar to Buckingham field and we usually get 16 runs due to light turnouts. Event 4 Another event at BBT and our 1st of the year on a Sunday. This will be our Porsche Mothers day special....stay tuned for more. This will be the last of our winter / spring, Autocrosses, with action picking back up in September, October and November. As always a big thanks to all our regular participants, instructors and team of volunteers that organize, set-up, tear down and do 100’s of behind the scene details that make these events possible. Every so often we get someone that sees something that needs to be done, steps up and just doe it. The latest example was Chuck and Wendy Limroth who took pitty on our battle worn PA system and donated a much better, compact system thats easy to set up and operate...Thanks Chuck and Wendy News, reminders and 2018 updates: Everyone is now required to pre register for any AutoX on Clubregistration.net… Please consult the GCR or Zone 12 website and Kassette for all Autocross photos & results. Porsche classes are loosely based on the PCR’s for medium size regions, with minor regional adjustments. The major difference will be the addition of SN (stock car/novice driver) for men and ladies. These classes are strictly for newcomers only. Please see Steve for any car class questions or if you wish to run as a novice. We reserve the right to make additional class/rule changes as needed. Our 2018 series are planned to be 7 events. To be eligible for an end of the year award, competitors must run in at least 4 events in the same class. Each competitor’s top 4 finishes will be calculated and an end of the year class champion and possibly runner-up (depending on class size) will be chosen. In case of a tie, additional events will be added until the tie is broken. Yearend class champion awards will be presented. No passengers except for an approved AX instructor driving or in the car instructing. Questions…..call Steve or Dottie Kidd 954-946-3196 GCR members should try PCA AutoX events hosted by other regions. Last year Dottie and I attend AutoX events hosted by Suncoast, Everglades, Citrus, Sonnenschein North Florida Florida Crown and Peachstate regions. This year Florida Crown has a new AX program with their 1st Event February 18, and Spacecoast region finally found a new AutoX site and will be getting their program re-started later this year.
