FIRST TURN Peter Olliviere, President
A year ago, PCA held an event in partnership with Princess Cruises that was called Zonefest-at-Sea, and cruised to the eastern Caribbean. I was unable to attend so I didn’t spend much time looking into the event. When the cruise ship returned, amongst the stories of partying and having a good time, I heard about an event that was held on the ship. That event was a Diecast Car Concours which was open to one eighth scale diecast Porsche model cars, with three classes being represented: Racing, Street and Best of Show. I was sorry to have missed that event, but I promised myself that if it was done again, I would definitely attend. I have been involved with model cars all my life and just could not let a chance like this slip by. So, when it was announced that the event would be held in December 2023, I had to book the cruise. You could say the cruise was secondary to the Diecast Car Concours. Now the problem for me was what car to enter. Since I was entering
the racing car class, it was obvious that I needed a Porsche Racing Car, something that would be beautiful to look at, and at the same time hold significance beyond just being another car. The detailing on the car had to be so good that someone examining the model, except for size, could not distinguish it from the real thing. I knew that if I could meet all my goals, I would be a winner. After researching several Porsche racing cars, I decided to go with the Porsche 804 Formula 1 car, from 1962. I felt that since Porsche was not known for Formula 1 racing, the car would be overlooked and would make for a rare and interesting entry. I was convinced that the 804 was the unique entry I was looking for. In its long and successful racing history, Porsche had never competed in Formula 1 Racing, so it was unexpected when they announced the building of a car for the 1962 Formula 1 regulations. Not only did they not have a car, but they needed an engine to meet the 1,500cc formula. In true Porsche tradition the twin cam 1,500cc engine they designed was an air-
cooled flat-eight cylinder design with shaft driven twin overhead camshafts driving a 6-speed gearbox. The engine was redlined at 10,000 RPM with the maximum of 180 HP produced at 9,200 RPM. Racing success followed and Porsche debuted its 804 for the 1962 season. In July of 62, the 804 with Dan Gurney as the driver, won the French GP. A week later, once again with Gurney driving the 804, he won the German GP. Finally at another GP, the 804 scored a one-two finish, giving the car three wins and second place in its short racing career. The 804 was a short but successful chapter in the history of Porsche racing. It was the only Porsche ever able to secure a Formula 1 win, but it proved that the brand could be successful even in racing styles that it was not known for. To complete this story, the 804 secured its first concours win by being awarded first place in the racing car class at the 2023 Diecast Concours. I’m glad to report that my hunch worked.

KEY STROKES Roger Fabel, Editor
I am sure you have seen a great movie that kept your attention, and after watching, you placed it on the top of your recommendations list and watched it many times after your first viewing. After 17 years of publishing the Kassette, I have that same “best movie feeling” about this current issue that you are getting ready to read. We have four back-to-back articles that will entertain you and teach you more about some of your fellow Gold Coast members. As the tag line says, “It all about the people.” You can add another tag line, “We Got Talent.” How did we get here? Back in 2007 when I was the president of GCR, we needed to fill the position for editor of the Kassette. The newsletter was
less than half our present page count in a black and white format. No one stepped up to the plate to fill the position. To resolve the issue, I did my research and received help from the national PCA newsletter editor on what were the best software packages for newsletters. From then on it was a steep learning curve, but very rewarding. Fast forward to a few years ago when a simple question was asked, “Could you use a writer?” This GCR member had been writing for a sailing magazine and was looking to get more involved in our region. Since then, we started to build a Kassette team and have attracted more writers, graphics artists and a copy editor. At our last Kassette staff meeting, I asked one of our new writers what
they been doing to advance their skills? The answer was that they had always wanted to write, but never had a chance. Now our members get to enjoy the talents of our writers, graphic artists, copy editor and photographers. The door is always open if you would like to contribute to the Kassette, which has gone from a few Xerox pages in a black and white newsletter to a 36-page full color magazine. We could not have gotten here without the talent and time of our dedicated members.
This month’s cover should give you an idea of the outstanding content you are about to see. Please thank our team. Share your talent and enjoy the movie!

START YOUR ENGINES PCCB Brakes: The Pinnacle of Automotive Stopping Power Ian Gerada, Membership Chair
2024 Porsche Turbo S: The Pinnacle of Speed in the 992 Series Last year, Porsche introduced an updated version of their iconic 911, specifically the 992 generation, and it includes an impressive new model: the Turbo S. This car is part of a generation where almost every model is turbocharged, excluding the GT3 and GT3 RS. Here is a closer look at what sets the Porsche 911 Turbo S apart from the other Porsche models. Performance and Drivetrain The Turbo S boasts a 3.7-liter flat-six engine, similar to the standard Turbo but enhanced to deliver an incredible 640 horsepower, a significant jump from the Turbo’s 572hp. It comes with standard all-wheel drive and an eightspeed dual-clutch PDK transmission. Porsche claims it can reach a top speed of 205mph and can go from 0-60 mph in just 2.6 seconds, though some tests have reported times as quick as 2.2 seconds.
For braking, it’s equipped with Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes (PCCB), featuring 10-piston aluminum monoblock calipers and 420mm vented discs at the front, and 4-piston calipers with 390mm discs at the rear. Interior and Infotainment Inside, the Turbo S shares many features with the base-model 911 Carrera but adds elements like a heated GT sports steering wheel and matte carbon fiber inlays. It is practical also, with a front trunk that can fit two suitcases and rear seats that fold forward for extra cargo space. The driver’s area includes a digital gauge, brake assist, park assist, cruise control, a Homelink garage door opener and Keyless Go. The infotainment system, operated via touchscreen, runs Porsche’s latest Connect Plus software, supporting wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto. It comes with a Bose 12-speaker

H
aving missed Rennsport Reunions 1 through 6, as soon as Rennsport Reunion 7 dates were announced, I blocked out my calendar and decided I was going to road trip my 1996 993 Turbo. I was going to drive from Delray Beach, FL to Monterey, CA and back. Many might question my sanity for putting all that mileage and wear and tear into what
10
has become quite valuable under my 19 years of ownership. I purchased the car in 2005 as an upgraded track car to my 1979 930 and tracked it profusely for over 15 years. As such, I was excited to make some more memories with the 993 and purchased tickets for Rennsport Reunion 7. I formulated a loose plan of some people and places I wanted to stop & see across the
Die Porsche Kassette | February 2024
country and allowed myself 10 days to get to Laguna Seca Raceway. I tentatively set September 18th as my departure date. After the plan was in motion, Gold Coast PCA announced that they were holding a Driver’s Education event at Homestead Speedway in Miami on September 16th. Being a member of the PCA DE
transit was completed as necessary, but outside of the fire it was generally unremarkable.
USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park Instructor Corps, I didn’t want to miss that event but was weary of tracking my Turbo days prior to driving the old girl back-and-forth across the country. I decided to throw caution to the wind and signed up to instruct. I put on my dedicated track wheels and tires, drove to Homestead and had a great track day instructing and driving. That night I swapped the track wheels and tires back to the street wheels and tires and began packing for my departure on the 18th. Packing an air-cooled 911 for two weeks with a dog and room enough for my girlfriend Camilla and her gear used up pretty much all available free space (including the void for the spare tire in the frunk). Camilla was scheduled to land in Denver on September 21st at 11am. I was mentally committed to summit Pikes Peak prior to meeting her at the airport. As a snow skier, the drive from Delray to Colorado and back is not new to me, with “the flyover states” moniker mostly deserved. No stranger to high-speed longdistance drives, I was not going for the Cannonball Run approach (see side note about the Cannonball). At least not this time as I would stop in Mobile, AL, Dallas, TX and Colorado Springs. Day 1 was a 678-mile trip from Delray to Mobile. I cruised up I-95, then over to I-75 north. The low-fuel light came on near Ocala, FL. The next exit advertised “Big Daddy Don Garlits Race Museum”. At that point
my average speed was just a couple of ticks over the posted speed limit, but within the normal course of travel along with my fellow motorists. I took on 15 gallons of fuel, took Stoli my trusted companion, a 12lb Brussels Griffon, for a stroll through the museum. This may not have been worth a dedicated trip but welcomed coincidence, nonetheless. I landed in Mobile, AL in time for a bite to eat & chance to walk Stoli before getting to sleep. My average speed was respectable over the distance and hit a max speed on a smooth empty section of the panhandle. The top speed for this leg was impressive but shall remain unspoken. Day 2 Mobile, AL to Dallas, TX and 592 miles. After an early morning detour to the USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park, it was off to Dallas. On these less than scenic sections of interstate highways, my excitement came in the form of an 18 wheeler engulfed in 15ft flames and a black plume of smoke that could be seen for miles The drive through Mississippi and Louisiana did not allow a particularly rapid pace and slowed further by heavy rain before landing at the Beeman Hotel in Dallas. The
Day 3 Dallas to Colorado Springs and 740 miles driven with an estimated drive time of 11:45. (9/20/23). I met an old friend at Sadelle’s in Dallas for a catch up over a coffee before heading W/NW to Colorado Springs. Along the route, a friend with a car transport business followed some of my Instagram updates. He thought we might be crossing paths near Amarillo, TX as he was transporting a beautiful Ferrari 512M from CA to NY. I was more interested in covering ground than meeting, but when he suggested we meet at the Cadillac Ranch in about 30 minutes. I realized that the Cadillac Ranch was basically enroute. After a few quick pictures and a look at the 512M, I was back on the road. Texas blurred into New Mexico. Stoli and I started the vertical ascent into Colorado. Temperatures cooled and the highways started to get twisty, which both my turbo and I enjoyed. As we crossed into Colorado, daylight started to wane, but I kept covering ground and made it to Colorado Springs around 7:45 pm.

Pikes Peak Summit In these 3 days I covered 2,071 miles and passed and visited seven states: Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, New Mexico and Colorado, burning 105 gallons of fuel. The old 993 twin-turbo never skipped a beat. The flyover states were behind us and the fun part of the trip was about to begin!! Day 4 Colorado Springs to Vail, Co. (9/21/23). I have been to Pikes Peak a few times but was excited about taking the turbo up the famed Hill Climb Road to the top of one of Colorado’s 14ers (14,000+ ft.) Peaks. I arrived prior to the gates opening (7:30am) to beat the traffic, but also to ensure an on-time pick up at Denver International Airport. After paying for a pass at the park ranger booth, they informed me that a crew was filming at the top and I would have to wait until they were finished before I would get a chance to go to the summit. The park staff let us ascend in stages, and being first in line, I took some liberties exceeding the posted limit on the way up. The park staff held the tourists at lower elevation before letting us ascend further, then we were faced with more unfortunate news. The film crew wrecked a car and damaged a guard rail while shooting and it would take more time to make some repairs. I was running out of time for my rendezvous at the airport and I told the park staff that I didn’t drive my Porsche all the way from Florida to have a bent guard rail prevent me from getting to the summit. It’s still crazy to me that
12
they hold one of the most famed hill climb races up that mountain. It’s a daunting drive at slow speeds and not much in the way of protection to keep participants from going over the edge. After a quick trip to the top and chance to snap a few shots, I had a spirited ride down the switchbacks with a big smile on my face enjoying the elevation and turns that I miss as a Floridian. After the shenanigans atop Pikes Peak, I was a bit tardy for my rendezvous with Camilla at DIA. She was still happy to see me and we headed out for Vail on one of Colorado’s great drives. The drive through Estes Park on the east through Rocky Mountain National Park on the Trail Ridge Road. This route is nothing short of spectacular. The Trail Ridge Road is a winding 48-mile ribbon of asphalt that connects Estes Park on the east side and Grand Lake on the west. Eleven of the miles are completely above tree line (11,500 ft) where the park’s evergreen forests become tundra. The highest elevation on the route measures 12,183 ft and offers a thrilling drive with jaw dropping views. Endless wildlife sightings and

beautiful wildflowers were on display. The rest of the drive up to Vail didn’t disappoint either. The late September afternoon drive through Granby, Kremmling and Silverthorne was great in the 993. The 911 greenhouse was perfect for soaking the golden glow of the Aspens in the prime of their fall foliage. The old 993 Turbo was rock solid. It took only fuel and some octane booster as the fuel stops offered only 91 octane as premium fuel. My turbo has been modified over the years, mainly track oriented performance mods, such as removal of the AWD system, the motor has been rebuilt with stronger internals, bigger turbos and a tune. Its last dynomometer test indicated 540 rear wheel horsepower and 540 pound-foot torque at 1 bar boost. It is sprung quite stiff on some old Bilstein shocks, which makes things a little bouncy on public roads, especially whilst the speedo is indicating misdemeanor speeds. Despite all the modifications, the car was happy all the way. Day 5 Vail to Kayenta, UT was 540 Miles. After two nights in Vail, we pushed off to Moab, UT where we visited Arches & Canyonlands National Parks, both of which I’m no stranger to, but always take great pleasure in visiting. After a long day hiking through parks, we hit the Moab Garage Co. for delicious BBQ while plotting our next 270 mile, four hour trek to Page,
AZ. There, we were planning to see Horseshoe Bend & Antelope Canyon. As we pushed on into the darkness, I was trying to shorten our estimated arrival time by applying as much throttle as the light rain and shower conditions would allow. While buzzing along, we came upon a caravan of what was instantly recognizable as Porsche G Body taillights. We gave a honk and quick wave as we made the group of six 911’s headed southwest on the 191 disappear in the rear-view mirror. About 2.5 hours from Moab, the clock was ticking toward 10pm and still no lodging secured for the night. We rolled into Kayenta, UT & found a cheap motel with vacancy. I fueled up the turbo, took a shower and adjusted the travel plan for the welcomed premature stop.
Our next destination was Zion National Park,150 miles ahead. We arrived in Zion with enough daylight to check-in, drive the scenic road and take a late afternoon hike. The next morning, we went to a local outfitter, grabbed some amphibious hiking boots, walking sticks and a dry sack to carry Stoli. Stoli goes everywhere with me, but he’s not really a great hiker and we were going to hike “The Narrows”. We started with a fourmile river walk, wading through the river which at times water was well above my waist up to a point known as “Wall
When I pulled up the map, I realized we were not far from Mexican Hat, a rock formation aptly named for its resemblance to a sombrero. I also noticed that we were less than 30 minutes from “Forest Gump Point,” the spot in Monument Valley where Tom Hanks stops running in the movie. That instantly put our plan into action for the next day. We were going to watch the sunrise over Monument Valley at Forest Gump Point. It was still dark when we left in the morning, but a faint Stoli at “Forest Gump Point” glow to the east silhouetted the in Monument Valley statuesque rock formations which was amazing to see at a substantial Street.” Wall Street is a section where rate of speed. The hike 258mi, and about four hours. After took longer than we thought, and we backtracking to Monument Valley for were in a little bit of a time crunch to sunrise, we pushed 100 miles west to get to Las Vegas for a 7PM Cirque du Page, AZ. Our Antelope Canyon tour Soleil. Most of the ride from Zion to was canceled due to flooding, but we Vegas was the I-15 South, which is a enjoyed Horseshoe Bend despite this wonderfully smooth strip of tarmac. To location being a bit of a tourist trap. The get to the show on time, I did my best roads and scenery along the Arizona- to egregiously exceed posted speed Utah border offer some of the most limits. I achieved the trip in maximum spectacular vistas in the country, and speed on that stretch, but at no time did roads that let you enjoy them at a very I exceed XXX mph. (actual speeds are high rate of speed. redacted to protect the guilty.)
I’m often asked what it’s like going so very fast in a car, but I have a difficult time answering as it feels different depending on the car. One thing that holds true is that accelerating is quite different than maintaining the speed. Accelerating feels fast, however once you stop accelerating, if the road surface is smooth and the road is clear the sensation of speed dissipates. For example, traveling at a high rate of speed in West Texas is rather uneventful, save for lots of wind noise. The 993 is not the most aerodynamic Porsche vehicle.. The windshield is not raked like newer 911’s & requires a lot of horsepower to push through the air. The stiff spring rates on my car also amplify bumps as the speed increases. Its big fixedwing serves to run air through the intercooler as well as provide downforce so it feels planted & stable. I asked Camilla what it felt like to her as I was interested to hear how she might describe the experience. Her response was, “It feels like you are being launched, like you are about to take off with the slightest rise or bump in the road. It feels focused, fast and steady, all at the same time.” We reached the city limits of Las Vegas and realized we gained an hour with a time zone change. This enabled us to check into our hotel, clean up after the hike earlier in the day and make it to the show without missing more than the introduction. We had a late dinner. Afterwards, we strolled down the strip with Stoli, and won a couple of tanks worth of fuel on the craps table before calling it a night. The following morning, we filled our bellies at the all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet at the Wynn (another highlight). A 16hr stay in Vegas is the perfect amount of time in Sin City. Day 7 Las Vegas to Pismo Beach, CA 483 Miles (9/26/23) with an intermediate stop in Hollywood!! The first part from LVNV to LA was 279 miles. I wanted a “HOLLYWOOD” sign photo with the turbo & the pooch, so that was the first stop in California. I

topped up outside Barstow which was the last “cheap” gas station for a while ($5.70/gal. for 91 octane). After a few quick photos below the Hollywood sign, we took a 70 mile drive up the PCH in the late afternoon sun to Geoffrey’s in Malibu for dinner. I try to visit there when in SoCal as the food is almost as enjoyable as the Pacific views. We lost daylight on the remaining 151 miles up to Pismo Beach but had a nice ride. Day 8 Last Day, Pismo Beach to Santa Cruz 280 miles. The PCH doesn’t disappoint, especially in a Porsche if you’ve driven from Florida. After a short ride from Pismo Beach, I stopped for pictures in Morrow Bay and added ½ quart of oil which was the only maintenance the old gal needed in the 4,500 miles covered. Our route to dinner took us right past Laguna Seca, where the PCars were already buzzing.
Arriving at Rennsport 7
It was truly satisfying to have trekked the old turbo all the way across the country without a single mechanical issue, through heat, freezing temps atop Pikes Peak, heavy rain and arid plains. I rolled through the outfield of the track and during the calm before the event thrilled to have accomplished the mission. I could write another story on the Rennsport experience, but the cherry on top was being able to drive my Porsche right into the paddock on Sunday with zero credentials other than the old 993 Turbo herself. Getting there was only half of the journey as I still had to get back to Florida. Perhaps in another issue, I’ll share the events about the return trip, which had far less sightseeing but no less excitement.
Paddock Area SIDE NOTE:
Dave Maher and Alex Roy set a transcontinental “Cannonball Run” record pace of 31 hours and 4 minutes. The crosscountry trip from New York City to Santa Monica Pier (California) was run between October 7-9, 2006. Their effort set a record which stood for seven years. This record transit was beaten by another team in October 2013 with a time of 28 hours and 50 minutes. The Roy/Maher transit was depicted in a documentary film APEX: The Secret Race Across America in 2019. The original Cannonball Run was started by Brock Yates in 1971 and was the subject of a feature length film of the same name starring Burt Reynolds, Dom DeLuise, Roger Moore, Farrah Fawcett and many other stars of the time. Neither PCA nor the Gold Coast Region condones traveling at rates exceeding the posted speed limits. February 2024 | Die Porsche Kassette

FINDING GOLD Jorge Alvarez Kickin’ it… with a smile Member Feature by Mark Johnson Our member featured this month is Jorge Alvarez. He is a financial advisor and was born in Puerto Rico to Cuban parents. He lives in Miami with his wife, three children, a Goldendoodle “Loki” and a couple… make that three, Porsches. Oh, and while he is quite successful in the financial industry, he is highly trained in martial arts and quite proficient with a sword. It’s an exceptional combination of talents. Interestingly, both his passion for Porsche and his love of martial arts came from his brother-in-law. As a young boy his brother-in-law would talk cars and exposed him to traditional karate. Jorge remembers him practicing his kata (training exercises) on the beach and the several trips to the Bronx to watch him train… old school. Jorge has been training in

Jorge Alvarez in his element, the 964! martial arts for almost 30 years. His first Porsche was a Boxster that was acquired in 2004. One might get the idea that the two disparate disciplines have greatly complemented each other. If the Kassette staff counted correctly, he has owned at least eight Porsches going back to 2004 and has climbed the belt ladder of Taekwondo to become a 4th degree black belt. As Jorge would say, “you’re either growing or dying,” onwards and upwards with achievement at every step. Since this is a Porsche Club newsletter, let’s start with the cars. The Boxster was a great “little” car back in 2004, but it was quickly replaced when Jorge custom ordered a 997 911 Cabriolet with Carrera S wheels. He put over 80K miles on that

vehicle before it was replaced with a first generation 991.1, and then onto a 991.2. Following that sequence, it was time to do a little throwback to find his first air-cooled Porsche in 2017. He had always dreamed of owning the car “on the poster” as a kid, a G-Body 911. He finally found his first air-cooled 911. After buying the car, he took his dad for a ride in his G-Body cabrio. At that time, Jorge could barely drive a manual transmission, but he picked up his father anyway so they could enjoy a drive together. Mr. Alvarez had started his career in the car industry selling VWs in Puerto Rico before Jorge was born. Pops Alvarez suggested that there were so many VW Bugs in Puerto Rico because he and his sales team were
Quite impressive, Jorge, Gum -Do, 911, Sunrise! (photo by Facundo Bustos) a proficient sales crew. It was a great day together, grinding through a few gears and smiling with the sights, smells and sounds of an air-cooled 911. Later that week Mr. Alvarez was hospitalized and sadly passed away. How fortunate it was for Jorge and his dad to have shared that unique and fleeting experience. The current Alvarez Porsche stable includes the 1989 Carrera 25th Anniversary G-Body Cabriolet, the last year of the G-Body. It also contains a 1991 964 C2 in Midnight Blue Metallic and a 2008 997 C2 in Midnight Blue Metallic, as well. For the ‘89 Carrera G-Body and the 997, they are mostly
stock. The daily driver 997 has Ohlin coil-over shocks, upgraded engine mounts, a Fister exhaust system and a Porsche PCCM head unit. However, the 964 is truly personalized. The laundry list of upgrades includes 993 headers, a Fabspeed X-pipe, high flow sport cats, muffler delete, 993 lines, RS engine mounts and a totally custom interior with 996 Turbo hardback seats. Johanna Alvarez, Jorge’s wife, will tell anyone that the 964 is the favorite of the three, yet he insists that he does not play favorites. Sure. Jorge and Johana have three kids, David 20, Natalia 18 and Jorge 17. With the G-Doodle Loki, it is a home
full of fun, constant surprises and most certainly, love. They celebrate each other’s successes and enjoy a family camaraderie that is evidenced by the smile on Jorge’s face. The family often travels together, and trips can be planned around a Taekwondo tournament, a Spartan race or a concert… most likely, U2. Some of the great locations he has travelled to see them live include Barcelona and Paris. Jorge loves Spartan races. These are unique obstacle courses/mud run races held all over the world designed to test your physical and mental fortitude. His favorite is the race in Hawaii each year on Kualoa ranch

Florida State Champion in Forms, Weapons, Sparring and Combat Weapons Sparring. He also received a Silver (second place) in Weapons at the Pan-American tournament in Florianopolis, Brazil. Take a hint, while Jorge is calm, peaceful and joyous to all, you better be on his side in a fight.

where they filmed movies like Jurassic Park and the series Lost. He once finished a“beast” distance of 13 miles on a busted ankle. That weekend he ran a total of 26 miles with 75 obstacles in the jungle mountains. Quitting is not in his vocabulary. Jorge is also a Certified Life Coach. Helping others is an important part of his DNA. He sits on the Board of Directors for two non-profit organizations: Autism Speaks and AMI Kids, an at-risk youth program that helps youth discover their full potential and a path to a positive future. The success in the financial planning and advising career has also allowed Jorge to pursue his lofty achievements in martial arts. It has taken almost 30 years of continuous training and practice to achieve a 4th degree black belt in Taekwondo. Additionally, he recently tested for his 2nd Dan (achievement level) in the traditional Korean sword discipline of Kummooyeh. This martial art requires a tremendous amount of skill and practice. Jorge is a certified instructor in both disciplines, and he travels extensively to train, compete and teach. In 2022 he was the

He shared an interesting story that pulled together his living in Miami, his martial arts and weapons skills and his Porsche. Jorge wanted to do a photo shoot in downtown Miami, under one of the many bridge overpasses. It’s a common spot for such photography, but the hook here was that he would be carrying his “Gum Do,” the Korean word for sword, and posing with the car, the blade and the backdrop. It would be quite a juxtaposition of location, car and weapon. Off to the Miami location he went. Getting out of his Porsche and pulling out the sword was easy. What was not considered was the impact, scenario and optics of this man to the locals who happened to congregate under the overpass. These folks apparently took one look at Jorge, assumed the worst and scattered immediately,

The Alvarez family thinking he was ready to “clean up” the area. One can only imagine the thought of what could happen when the only goal was to grab a few unique snaps of car, martial arts guy and such. If these folks only knew how much friendship was important to Jorge, it might have been a completely different response. Maybe there is a new TV series in there somewhere, kind of like Miami Vice meets Kung Fu?!? Friendship, ahhhhh, that special glue that binds the other half of Porsche allure, the people. Jorge insists that the “friendships that I have made through this community are invaluable. Everyone sharing a common passion.” He is quick to point out that the Porsche family helped tremendously during the pandemic. It was a safe way for us to spend time together while still social distancing and driving together.” He loves the trips that he takes with the Miami crew to the GA, NC and TN mountains. He has done several track days and has driven all three current Porsches on the track, usually Homestead-Miami Speedway. Certainly, as a Miami resident he partakes in DRT.
He also has done several private group runs with Targa Carolina and the Vintage Vices group. He has been to the Porsche Experience Center in Atlanta to peruse the museum and get on the vehicle track race simulators. He did not share how he does on the sims; they are not easy. He intends to go back to PEC to enjoy driving on the track, especially with the expansion and new, additional course which added a new blacktop to expand the total course to 1.3 miles in length. He would also place a Euro delivery of a car to be picked up in Stuttgart, as a bucket list item. Jorge has been a PCA Gold Coast member since 2005, shortly after buying the Boxster. He is also
fascinated by his friends that work on their own PCars. Another member and friend, Thierry Ritfeld, helped Jorge install a SCART muffler on the 964 at the Ritfeld “garage.” Thierry handed the tools to Jorge and led him through the step-by-step removal of the existing system and the installation of the new SCART exhaust. Enjoying the experience, he suggests he would love to continue to learn about Porsche and to work more on them himself.
tremendous amount of truth in that statement, and virtually every Porsche owner will attest to that sentiment.
His favorite? He already has it, the 964. “This 911 has an amazing aircooled look of the torpedo lights/ fenders while maintaining the old school, visceral nanny free driving experience.” Adding a common refrain, “if you aren’t turning around to look at your car after you park, you are driving the wrong vehicle!” There is a
If we had a regret, it is that he stays very busy advising clients on financial matters, traveling for martial arts training and events, and we don’t see him near often enough in one of his cars. Jorge, a little more Porsche please, and maybe a touch less “KIHAP,” you know - the shout!
Jorge Alvarez is a talented financial guy, an accomplished martial artist and quite proficient with edged weapons. He loves his Porsches, but could still get better at driving stick… Heel-Toe anyone? Best of all is that he loves the Porsche community, and that community is very happy to have him on their side.
A man truly skilled and disciplined in many ways

CARS AS STARS Ruben Fuentes’s 1995 911 RS America appeared in a 2001 movie, “The Wedding Planner”. Article by Alicia Laya, staff writer In the mesmerizing world of movies, television and music videos where imagination and reality blur into one, the mechanical life of cars can become dynamic characters. These charismatic co-stars leave a mark on the script. Car stars are the driving force behind exhilarating plots whether on the big screen, small screen or in print advertising. The roar of a Porsche engine echoes not only in the performance, but also in the hearts of cinema enthusiasts. Join us now as we take a screen joyride into Porsche Cars as Stars, with our very own PCA Gold Coast Region members Emilio Azan, Ruben Fuentes and Gerald Delatour.

Emilio Azan and actor Charlie Sheen have something in common. On March 9, 2023, Emilio acquired a piece of automotive history. A 1984 Carrera Cabriolet originally in Grand Prix White, now a resplendent Slate Blue Metallic which has played a role in the slick 1987 movie “No Man’s Land,” starring actor Charlie Sheen. While Emilio did not know at the time of buying this car that not only was it a vintage find – it was a movie car star. His car was driven by actor Charlie Sheen whose character in the movie was an ace Porsche car thief, with perfectly slicked back hair. Charlie played an egomaniac young rich boy, who specifically only steals Porsches for thrills. Some movie critics deemed this the best late 1980s car-chase movie, “Thee Porsche Movie of All Time.”
Die Porsche Kassette | February 2024
Despite the passing of time on this Carrera, Emilio has managed to gather more info on the car’s history, primarily through records from Red Line, a California service shop associated with the film, but also on an eBay listing that shed light on the car’s journey as well. Unfortunately, a chunk of the car’s documented past appears lost, adding an air of mystery to its story. Intriguingly, subtle features in the car, such as a filled hole on the engine lid that once hosted an incar phone antenna in the movie, further cemented the car’s movie provenance. Unique traits like an uncut front valance for fog lights and an added third brake light hinted at modifications made for its movie appearance.
The revelation about its movie role came as a surprise to Emilio, who initially was just out looking to buy a reasonably priced Porsche. However, finding this gem surpassed his expectations. He was told by the selling agent that the car had been repainted to its current color, had some mileage, lots of rock chips and was mechanically sound. After inspection, Emilio purchased it sight unseen. Driving it as often as possible, Emilio has covered over 8,000 miles since March of last year, embarking on road trips to North Carolina and exploring the scenic routes of South Florida. Emilio’s Carrera has proven to be an ideal road trip companion, offering great fuel mileage while keeping up a great pace with traffic. As a hands-on enthusiast, Emilio admits to turning a few wrenches, leveraging his experience with aircooled cars and classic VW’s. His Carrera has undergone personalized upgrades, including new tires, front wheel bearings and a stylist Momo
steering wheel. The shift bushings were also swapped out, a Rennlinebracketed fire extinguisher found its place and a Dansk Sport exhaust was installed. Looking ahead, Emilio plans to continue clocking miles on this cinematic car star, addressing any hiccups that may come up – a testament to his commitment to both driving pleasure and holding on to a unique legacy. Ruben Fuentes is the proud owner of a celebrity car that has captivated audiences from print ads to a motion picture to a hot new urban music video. His 1994 Porsche 911 RS America, in brilliant Midnight Blue Metallic, has been showcased in Carrera Sunglass ads and in the 2001 movie “The Wedding Planner,” starring Jennifer Lopez and Matthew McConaughey. Although the film is set in San Francisco, it also used other film shoot sites in San Mateo County and Los Angeles County. These included the stunning California landscapes of The Filoli Historic House and Gardens in the town of Woodside and The Huntington in San
Marino City. But it is in the spotlight of a music video that this star car truly dazzles us. The recent launch of the music video, ‘La Primera,’ by the sensational reggaeton artist, Deimi, showed off his celebrity car set against the urban backdrop of Miami. Ruben purchased his 911 in February 2000 when it had just 14,000 miles. Over the last 24 years, Ruben has taken great pleasure in enhancing its features. He opted for a meticulous respray with all the glass removed, replaced the catalytic with Fabspeed bypass, replaced the secondary muffler with a Fabspeed G-Cup, eliminated the heater and installed a carbon fiber air duct, added a K&N air filter, incorporated a Fabspeed chip and lowered the car to Euro specs plus upgraded the suspension, including wheel spacers for an elevated driving experience. In 2020, Gerald Delatour proudly became the owner of a timeless classic – 988 911 Turbo Slantnose Cabriolet in Grand Prix White, featured in the 2013 movie, “Pain and Gain”,

that involves memories of the good old days, but the good old days don’t have to always be in the past when we have the opportunity and are blessed to be able to own and drive these cars today. The good days are ahead of us, and he hopes one day that this car will be in the hands of his son where he can enjoy the good old days of when he helped his dad restore his star car. Thanks Gerald, Ruben and Emilio for sharing with us your Celestial Rides from the Cinematic Galaxy along with the photos.
Gerald Delatour’s 988 911 Turbo Slantnose Cab appered in the 2013 movie, “Pain and Gain”. starring Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne (The Rock) Johnson. Gerald’s journey with this automotive gem began with the revelation from the selling agent about its screen debut. The writers and producers of this movie summed it up into four magical parts: Miami, Muscles, Money and Murder. A true story that took place back in 1995 right here south of our county line. Actors Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne Johnson delivered intense driving performances in Gerald’s 911 Turbo Cab, through the streets of Miami Beach and down the infamous MacArthur Causeway, a thrilling, heart-stomping dimension to the screen. One of the best examples available, considering its uniqueness, was its preparation for the sale. To ensure that the car was in pristine condition, it underwent a comprehensive pre-purchase inspection (PPI) before hitting the market. The documented services amounted to an impressive $25,000, a testament to the meticulous care of this vintage

beauty. The laundry list of repairs included a thorough overhaul of the engine, installation of a new K27 turbo, a fresh clutch and various enhancements like shift rod bushing, shift coupler, oil pressure sending unit, turn signal switch, ignition wire set, spark plugs, rear fuel pump, oil filter and an oil change, just to name a few. Among the rarest of production Porsche 930s were the hand-built 505-option Slantnoses, or Flachbau in German. The special build-order program Porsche body package was modeled after the legendary fire-breathing twin Turbocharged 935 full race monsters and brought considerable changes over a standard 930. Gerald boasts this is a rare beauty and piece of automotive art. While Gerald has two other cars that see more frequent use, this 911 Slantnose Cab holds a special place for weekends. He takes great joy in unleashing the power of his star car at least once a month. Gerald shared with us that there is something about these classic cars

PCA | Princess
Treffen at Sea
Story by Christy Spangler, Photos by the author, GCR members and PCA Staff “Out on the ocean, far from all the commotion, melting your heart of stone,” Jimmy Buffett (RIP) sang this line on his compact disc, Somewhere Over China. That song was the last one on the disc, but it truly imparted a sense of getting away and having some fun. “Would you like to take a stroll around the upper deck?” From across North America, nearly 800 PCA members, including 30 from Gold Coast Region, embarked on a cruise to the Western Caribbean. Perhaps not a Jimmy Buffett type cruise because there is no telling how many folks took a stroll around the upper deck, or tossed the compass over the rail, but it was a wonderful PCA Treffen at Sea. The Princess cruise ship, Sky Princess, carried the Porsche members and guests on an eightday adventure from Port Everglades – Ft. Lauderdale, FL to four ports of call including two full days at sea. It appears that these cruisers were so busy with the side trips and on-board activities that they had little time to stroll or toss away the compass.
26
Nearly 800 PCA members cruised to the Western Caribbean on the Sky Princess.
PCA guests boarded the ship on December 8th. The PCA Treffen and Sky Princess sailed off to Belize City in Belize. The country and city are known as a financial and industrial hub in the Caribbean. The next port was Roatán, an island in Honduras known for a great coral reef and excellent snorkeling. The third port was Costa Maya which is a smaller tourist region in Mexico with virgin white beaches and turquoise crystalclear waters. The final port was Cozumel, another island spot at the tip of the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. In all the stops, island style life was the great draw, just like the Boats, Beaches, Bars & Ballads of our supremely talented buddy, Jimmy.
Die Porsche Kassette | February 2024
While visiting each of these ports there was a wide range of excursions to choose from. Those going ashore could select cave tubing, exploring Mayan ruins, flying along zip lines, scuba diving, snorkeling and of course, relaxing beach time. If a member did not take an excursion there was plenty of local shopping and cruise mementos to acquire. Did anyone drink from a coconut, we wonder? There were myriads of things to do at each port. For those not leaving the boat, it was a great time to just chill, and maybe time for a great novel like Tales from Margaritaville.
Pirelli Diecast Concours at Sea
The round-trip cruise from Port Everglades took eight days with folks returning on December 16th. Much of the time, cruising between the ports of call was made during the overnight passages. However, there were two full days of steaming at sea. During the sea days, PCA experts Nathan Mertz, Ramsey Potts and Lee Giannone made presentations on several topics such as Porsche Market Updates and Planning Your Porsche’s Future. Rod Emory of 356 fame, shared his story “From Outlaw to Rennsport,” which was very interesting. Rod builds some exceptional 356 Outlaws. Additionally, PCA artist Kelly Telfer offered Porsche Painting classes for those so inclined to paint at sea. Painting with Kelly was not like painting in one color, battleship grey, as one might expect on a US Navy ship. No, this painting was quite fun, and of course the Sky Princess was kept in exceptional condition, dressed impeccably in the Princess white and blue livery. Beyond the discussions and painting, the competitive spirit of Porsche members came out with the Pirelli Diecast Concours at Sea. The Concours featured over a hundred models of various scale that were judged and awarded class ribbons. Of important note to our GCR group, President Peter Olliviere was awarded the Blue Ribbon, First Place, for his model of the rare race car model
804 Formula One Car (1962). This car was Porsche’s only F1 win at the 1962 French Grand Prix driven by Dan Gurney. It was a very nice accolade for our President. We were also treated to PCA Casino Night, a PCA 80’s Night that included a Fashion Show and Competition, a Door Decorating Contest, a Lip Sync Contest and even a Porsche Racing board game. All in all, the sea days offered a very good time and tons of laughs were shared by those onboard. Our host, Gary Golding of Princess Cruises, organized and emceed our Welcome Social, two PCA group dinners in the main dining room, a couple of dance parties and the FarewellCocktail Party/Ugly Sweater Send-Off. Those sweaters were U-G-L-Y, but the party was excellent, as was the entire Porsche cruise. The Treffen at Sea is the newest edition of the PCA Treffen events. Treffen, “to meet,” is an opportunity for members to join with fellow Porsche enthusiasts in different locations around the Nation. In 2024, The Spring Treffen Wine Country will take place in the Napa/Sonoma valleys in Northern California on April 21-25. The Fall Treffen Mount Washington will take place in New Hampshire on September 29 October 3. Finally, registration is now open for the 2024 Treffen at Sea to Alaska on the Majestic Princess which takes place July 28 - August 4.

The 944 Lean Steve Kidd submitted this photo taken by Alejo Menendez at the 48 Hours at Serbring Club Race Autocross in 2023. Steve has two blue 944 S2s and Alejo captured Steve piloting this 1989 S2 that was delivered from the factory in Baltic Blue, a fairly rare color for 944’s (most of them are red, black or white). This 944 has been used extensively for Driver’s Education, autocross and events where Steve and his wife, Dottie need to haul a lot of stuff. Steve says, “In the picture you see what I call the 944 lean, and yes while handling is extremely neutral, stock 944’s do lean when pushed to the limit.” The Kidds have been running the GCR Autocross program for over 20 years and were the first PCA Autocross team to offer Autocross as part of the 48 Hours at Sebring Club Race activities. Want to learn how to autocross? The Kidds usually offer an autocross school geared to beginners as well as 2 autocrosses in one day for all experience levels as part of the 48 Hours Club Race activities in early February.
