President’s Corner Dan Doyle - President

Happy February, everyone! The world-renowned 55th Rolex 24 at Daytona occurred on January 26-29, 2017. If you didn’t have a chance to go to the Rolex 24 at Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Florida, you missed a great race. However, I hope you were able to watch it by other means! Gold Coast Region (as well as several other Regions) was there in force on Saturday, January 28th at the PCA Car Corral Hospitality Tent. There we greeted and welcomed all PCA members, Porsche owners and their guests providing much needed refreshments. Everyone had a great time and the enthusiasm was infectious. If you have the opportunity to attend next year, please volunteer as

it was both rewarding and fun! In fact, volunteering for different activities within the club is a great way to get to know your fellow members and have a great time. As you might expect, we have a bunch of Porsche events lined up for this month. The 48 Hours at Sebring is on February 2-5 at Sebring International Raceway for those of you who love PCA club racing. On February 11th, come on out to TuneRS to the TuneRS/Gold Coast Region Swap Meet. Who knows what you’ll find there! For those interested in Concours, our Concours College/Tech Session is on February 18 at Foreign Affairs. After listening to Peter Olliviere and Fred Kohly, your car will never be cleaner! Finally, our first Driver Education event of the year is on

February 2017

|

February 25-26 at Sebring and is a joint event with Suncoast Region. If you think you love your car now, try putting it on the track with you in it! As usual, Porsches & Pancakes is on the first Saturday of the month. Please take some time to join other Porsche fans and talk about your favorite subjects: your car and Porsche! Also, we have our Thursday Socials on the third Thursday of every month where you can do the same thing! Please check your e-mail and the calendar on our website for updated times and locations. I’m looking forward to seeing all of you at some point in 2017! Drive smart!

elcome Race Fans. That is the phrase that many of our members are hearing at this time of year. The end of January kicks off the racing season at Daytona with the Rolex 24 Hours Race followed the next weekend with the 48 Hours at Sebring PCA Club Race. Highlights will follow in next months edition. This months issue features our Porsches by the Bay annual concourse. The PCA concourse has become so popular that we are holding our second Concours College and adding a new concours called the Classic Concours located in Broward County. On the same day as the Concourse College, Foreign Affairs will be holding a Tech Session. Please check the flyers and articles about these upcoming events. A new flyer that has been added is a New

Volunteer Spring Fling that will be held at CB Smith park. If you are a new member this is a great event to meet and learn about club activities and enjoy every ones favorite dish. We continue to grow and we don’t our new members to miss out on the full slate of region activities. The best way to get up to speed is to attend events, ask questions and get involved. Welcome to Braman Motorsports who is a new sponsor that we are pleased to present inside our back cover. We have had a great working relationship with Braman for many years and look forward to working even closer with them. Please check out their ad and visit them in Palm Beach. I hope you enjoy our From the Members articles each month. This is a very valuable section that helps members to share

their Porsche experiences. If you have an experience that you would like to submit please write an article up to one page in length and include high resolution pictures . The Document should be composed in Word using Times New Roman with size 10 fonts. Please do not add any special formatting. Both articles and pictures should be sent to the editor. If you have a special article that is longer than one page, please contact me with the details. Depending on the article and space available we may have space. Concours College 2017 Time to go back to school Peter Olliviere, Concoure Chair The Gold Coast Region has for several years held a program called Concours College that was focused on helping members develop the skills necessary to enter into Porsche Concours events. The program also was designed to develop a new pool of judges qualified to judge at Porsche events. The program was very successful in achieving these goals, however this year the Focus of Concours College is going to change a bit. This year we will be focusing on detailing and car care techniques that will be beneficial to every Porsche Club Member who plans to be part of a Porsche Club event. Whether your interest is in tracking your car, autocross, or Concours, you want it to look good. When you go to a PCA event, you very seldom if ever see a dirty car. If you weren’t “into your car” and Porsches in general, why would you join the PCA? So with this in mind Concours College will strive to give the participants detailed knowledge on detailing trends,

10

Die Porsche

products, techniques, and how they can be best applied to Porsche cars. The sessions will not just be in the classroom, but also live demonstrations some on attendees’ own cars. The point is, no matter your Porsche interest, Concours College will have something to offer. I want to stress we are not moving away from teaching basic Concours preparation, or from training a new pool of judges, but we are bringing Concours secrets and techniques to everyone, even for a daily driver. The first sessions or 2017 will be held on February 18th. At Foreign affiers, located in Pompano Beach. The first topics will be ones that have generated a lot of questions, and have generated numerus request for information, “Paint Correction” and “Car Wrapping”. We will be discussing paint correction from when and how to use a clay bar, to buffing and the polishing of your cars finish. We will have live demonstrations by professional in this aspect of detailing. The second topic will be car

Kassette |

February 2017

wrapping. This should be a very interesting topic since wrapping cars has grown tremendously over the last few years. We have seen wrapping grow from simple clear bras to full clear wraps, to complete color changes. For race cars, Wraps are cheaper, lighter, and more resistant than paint while offering unlimited design options. Once again we will have open discussion along with live demonstrations. The final session for the day will be a Tech Session put on by Foreign Affairs Motorsports. Now the housekeeping part. Concours College space is limited so you need to register ASAP. Look for an e-mail blast when Club registration opens with details of date, time and location. Coffee will be available in the morning along with donuts. Lunch will be served. See you there. Peter.

2017 Gold Coast Classic Concours A Gathering of the Family Time to start thinking about spring and the coming car show season, so to start the excitement, I want to announce to all the Porsche faithful that the Gold Coast Classic Concours D’Elegance will return for 2017. Last year we were forced to cancel the event because the cost of putting it on became prohibitive. This year we have restructured the Classic to make it into a one of a kind event that every one member or not can enjoy. The Classic for 2017 will be held on the lawn of Plantation Heritage Park, on April 8th 2017, from 7:00 AM, to 3:00 PM. This event is planned to be an elegant but low stress event for entrants, spectators, and organizers with the focus on having fun. The first fun thing will be the location. The show field will be located on the south west lawn of the park, next to the lake. The setting could not be more idyllic and family friendly. There are several

Peter Olliviere, Concoure Chair

playgrounds and picnic tables surrounding the show field, so no need to leave the family home. The next great thing is that the cars will be arranged in groups called Corrals. Each Corral will be populated by similar Porsche models. For example Boxsters will be in one Corral while Caymans will be in another. 911’s will be divided into Corrals of air cooled and water cooled. Turbos will be in a Corral of their own regardless of year, and GT cars will occupy their own space. Other Corrals will be created for Classic Water Cooled, Race and “Outlaws”, and 4 door Porsches. You get the idea, the intent is to make the classes simpler and the judging easier. The judging for this event has been modified and has been made easier for the judges to grade and for the entrant to prepare their car for. Cars will be judged within their Corral, with the winning cars from each

February 2017

|

Corral eligible to be judged for best of show. In addition to the indicated Corrals, there will be Sponsor Corrals. These special corrals will display any cars that the Sponsor wants to invite. For example, a dealer could invite customers to a day in the park and their car would go into the Dealers Corral. Separate awards will be presented to the best of these cars as chosen by the judges. In addition to all of the above, we will have food trucks and music for your listening pleasure. The Classic will be a unique Porsche event with no equal in Broward County. Registration will open in late January, with at a cost of $25.00 per car. For Information contact, Peter Olliviere at polliviere@gmail.com

GCR Porsches and Pancakes

The new year got off to a great start at the Broward Porsche & Pancakes event, where we had our highest attendance ever. Members chatted and dined at Kristof’s Cafe in Davie, Florida, a relaxed family restaurant featuring all manner of comfort food. Of course, this being January, egg-white omelettes with a side of tomatoes seemed to be the breakfast of choice. We hope to see you next month at Porsche & Pancakes at Kristof’s or one of our other five locations, where we suspect folks will be back to eating pancakes and bacon. Christy Brigman

Tremendous turnout at Casa Cuba in South Miami for the January 7, 2017 Porsche and Pancakes! Over 25 Gold Coast Region Member attended Casa Cuba in South Miami on a cool Miami morning. 25 Porsches quickly filled up the parking lot in cars ranging from 911’s, GT3s, Caymans, 356, a rare Classic 911 Targa turbo and a 928s. Conversation at the large breakfast table is always the best part in sharing stories both Porsche related and personal with one another. A quick but well attended group went then to Parkhaus1 on US 1 and 27 Ave to attend their monthly social. Paul Laya

Porsches by the Bay

Another year another great event! The 12th annual Porsches by the Bay proved to be another of the Gold Coast Region’s best social gathering of 2016. With over 100 cars participating, and 45 registered for the Concours d’Elegance the excitement filled the air. And talking about air, the weather cooperated fully, with sunny skies and cool temperatures. A great time was had by all and plenty of Porsche diversity showed up, from 356s from the mid ‘50s, early 911s from the ‘60s, to brand new cars with only a few miles. The scenery was spectacular, and as an added attraction a plane with a banner flew by several times proclaiming the celebratory event, which provided plenty of advertising for all of Miami to see. Thank you to our members for putting that together!

Autocross Update HAPPY NEW YEAR and welcome back to AutoX central....GCR’s final word in everything Autocross. In the January issue, we provided a spread sheet with the 2016 class winners who received one of our coveted awards. Want to win some of that cool swag??? Come run the 2017 series & win. As we start the new year, it is important to again thank the folks that make these events possible. Without the help of a small core staff,Dottie and I wold not be able to put on these events. Jake,Ty, Juan Carlos and the O’Connell brothers (David & John) are there to help set-up, tear down, assist with timing and student instruction. Also we learned it takes 3+ people to do Dotties job when she can’t make it....everything from handling electronic and on-site registration almost single handedly, serving as chief of workers, reminding me when to go pickup the autocross trailer and even washing all the bird poop off the trailer when I do finally drag it home and load it up. We also have a few non PCA members that help out with some of the heavy lifting during the events, and it seems the same folks are there time and time again.....a big thanks to this group as well. 2017 will follow the same pattern of many other years....7 events ….4 at BBT center and 3 at Sebring. In addition, we are planning 4 Zone challenge AX events (hey...it’s good to have an autoX chair that’s also the Zone 12 Representative), with individual autoX trophies for class winners at each challenge event. The 4 challenge events are: The Sebring 48 hour Club Race, Zonefest, Oktoberfast and a multiregional AX at Buckingham airport, Florida’s premier AutoX site, located in Ft. Meyers Here’s our tentative schedule for 2017, which is subject to change: #1 Saturday February 4th 2017 at the “skid pad” in Sebring …Our traditional 48 hours of Sebring Zone Challenge. Registration is now open on Club Registration…I expect all the GCR

regulars to compete and win against some really good competition. T-shirts for all...Trophies for class winners #2 Saturday Feb 25th at Sebring ….Most likely the concrete strip. (In Conjunction with the Gold Coast / Suncoast DE that same weekend. Registration is open on Club Registration at discounted rates #3 Sunday April 16 at BB&T Center in Sunrise. Date change to 4/22 is a possibility...Increased registration rates at this and all BBT events, due to increase in site rental. Sunday May 28th in conjunction with Zonefest 2017 at a site in the Tallahassee area. Hopefully many of the regulars will mark this date on their calendars and participate not only in the AutoX, but also the whole Zonefest weekend. Not a series event, but there will be trophies for AX class winners #4 Saturday June 10th @ BBT center in Sunrise Last AutoX before the summer break ***************************** ***************************** ***************************** ***************************** ******** #5 Saturday Sept 9th or 16th… We’re back at Sebring for fall opener…Should be similar to the Feb. 25th event #6 Mid October @BBT ...historically one of our best attended events of the year #7 Mid November @BBT Our final event of the year and our typical PCA Ladies go free day Also plan on attending the Oktoberfast Zone challenge AutoX October 28-29 + 1 more Zone Challenge

February 2017

by Steve Kidd, Autocross Chair News, reminders and 2017 updates: • Everyone is now required to pre register for any AutoX on Clubregistration.net… Please consult the GCR or Zone 12 website and Kassette for all Autocross photos & results. • Porsche classes are loosely based on the PCR’s for medium size regions, with minor regional adjustments. The major difference will be the addition of SN (stock car/novice driver) for men and ladies. These classes are strictly for newcomers only. Please see Steve for any car class questions or if you wish to run as a novice. We reserve the right to make additional class/ rule changes as needed. • Our 2017 series are planned to be 7 events. To be eligible for an end of the year award, competitors must run in at least 4 events in the same class. Each competitor’s top 4 finishes will be calculated and an end of the year class champion and possibly runner-up (depending on class size) will be chosen. In case of a tie, additional events will be added until the tie is broken. Yearend class champion awards will be presented. • No passengers except for an approved AX instructor driving or in the car instructing. • Questions…..call Steve or Dottie Kidd 954-946-3196 • GCR members should try PCA AutoX events hosted by other regions. Last year Dottie and I attend AutoX events hosted by Suncoast, Everglades, Citrus, Sonnenschein and Peachstate regions. This year Florida Crown has a new AX program with their 1st Event February 18, and Spacecoast region finally found a new AutoX site and will be getting their program re-started later this year. Join us for a road trip up the coast....meet new friends and course challenges.

Tech Corner : The Silent Porsche Article by Pedro P. Bonilla, Tech Editor

Porsche is redoubling its efforts to roll out its first fully-electric vehicle by 2020. The project is internally known as: “Mission E”.

distributed equally. The batteries can be charged by inductive charging by simply driving over a plate in the garage floor and automatically the charging begins.

According to a report by the German news site Automobilwoche, it states that Porsche plans to sell 20,000 units per year.

Mission E was presented as a concept car at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt in September 2015 and was an immediate hit. Some of the features expected on the Mission E are: Two motors driving all four wheels and producing 600 HP.

It will be powered by advanced lithiumion batteries which will extend to the complete underbody so that the weight is

They can also be charged in the conventional way, at a charging station or at home or place of work via a cable The charging port is hidden behind the front left fender. The car can charge up to 80% capacity in just 15 minutes, giving it a range of 250 miles. With a full charge, it can drive for 310 miles.

The Mission E car will reach a top speed of 150 mph and can go from zero to 62 mph in just 3.5 seconds. The new car will feature four seats and four doors that open in an entirely new way for Porsche.

January 2017

It will not have exterior mirrors. Instead, cameras will capture what’s behind and display it on the lower corner of the windshield. The driver can also control the car’s menu using built-in eye tracking technology. A camera detects where the driver is looking and what instrument on the dash the driver ants to open. The driver can then confirm by pressing a button on the steering wheel.

The car’s display also changes as the driver shifts position. So if the driver moves higher or lower in the seat, or leans to one side or the other, the instruments displayed on the interface will move with the driver. Since Volkswagen recently acquired the Canadian Company PayByPhone, The Mission E will probably have the capability to use mobile apps to pay for parking spaces in selected cities. Social Meeting Jan. 13, 1983 Approximately 60 people attended our first social meeting of 1983, and everyone complimented Chi Chit's delicious food and reasonable prices. We Also all helped Donna Hahn celebrate her¡27th birth day, and Chi-Chi's provided the great dessert. George discussed the changes in membership requirements, and Klaus Bitterhauf gave us some inside info on the Miami/Budweiser Grand Prix, in which he has a car entered. More on the race next meeting when we expect to have a speaker and someone selling tickets. Several upcoming autocrosses will take place ---in Orlando on Jan. 15-16; DOUBLE TROUBLE at Gulfstream Park on Feb. 20. For the National Parade in the Ozarks, we have applications. Also see Panorama. George called resort headquarters for the Parade and found out that rooms will be $74.00 per night, single or double. You must send your reservation for the Parade itself by Feb. 15 if you plan to go. Welcome to five new members: GlIbert Mesa Ronald Chase Paul Pearce Phil Teigland Graham Capozio

Board Meeting Jan. 9, 1983 The first Board Meeting of the year was held at Jane and Percy Lunn's home, and was attended by both, the incoming and outgoing officers and directors. George Houser opened with suggesting the by-laws of Gold Coast Region be reviewed and updated. Comments will be expected from those attending the next B. M. .Stephanie Slavin announced several ways of saving money in producing the Kassette as well as new ways to finance enhancing the newsletter. Advertisers were omitted from the Jan. Kassette because we did not have records to indicate who is and isn't paid for '83. Stephanie made a motion that all ads be on a 12-month basis from inception rather than on a calendar basis. Her motion was accepted. Editor will coordinate with Treasurer for billing.

Stan Pearlman said he felt our ad rates were -not current compared to other publications/ PCA regions , It was also discussed that the Kansette should be sent to the presidents rather than editors in other regions. Barbara Joffee will prepare a letter for George requesting that he, in turn, receive the newsletters of those regions. Terry Grau opened a discussion on charging regional dues. It was voted on and accepted by the Board to adopt the following policy effective 1/13/83: a $10.00, one-time-only regional membership fee will be charged to all new members. . New members will no longer be required to attend one Gold Coast function in order to be accepted. For the applications already with Barbara that are from the Ft. Myers PorscheAudi dealer who buys a membership for each Porsche he sells, they will be processed without the regional fee. However, Barbara will notify the dealer of our new policy, and also that we can only accept people living in Collier Co. , since Lee Co. is under Suncoast Region.

George reported that a group of PCA members from upstate FL would like to expand the autocross series from 4 to 7 events this year. We decided to support only the 4

established events and observe attendance at the rest, then consider all 7next year. A Driver's School will be held in April prior to first event, where not yet announced. Everyone concurred with Dennis DeFranceschi that this school should be a TRUE learning exercise with qualified instructors and not just a social run as so many "schools" are. .. Next B. M. to be at George Houser's, 2/2/83. All Board Members will receive instructions via m ail. It was decided to eliminate the $25.00 host allowance formerly paid. But we would like to thank Jane and Percy for the tremendous evening in their home‌it was like a mid-month New Year's Eve party!

Stephanie suggested publishing the business cards of members and affiliates in the Kaesette so we can use each other's services. The charge will be $20. 00 for 12 issues. Several officers and Board Members supported the idea by giving her cards and payments on the spot. It was decided that our social meetings would be held on Thursday evenings from Jan. to April, then on Saturday nights from May-Dec., when it is easier to get restaurants on weekends. Attendance will be evaluated. See Stan Pearlman for info on Feb. 6 Museum of Science Exhibit for 6-10 cars. Proceeds go to charity. Films guest speakers, and much more lie in store for future social meetings. New chairmen are: Goodies Sonnenfest Sonnenfest Registrar Autocross Autocross Ralley Concours Membership Tech Meeting Places

Form the Members : From Russia with Love by Brenda Gramajo

Dear fellow PCA Members, I am delighted to have the opportunity to share with you my amazing experience with the Porsche Club in Russia on a recent business trip in November 2016. I live a blessed life and I love my career in real estate, but my real passion is for performance cars and in particular Porsche C4S Cab.. I live and breathe Porsche and I seize every opportunity I can to spend my free time engaged in the Porsche Club activities in my hometown of Miami, Florida. On this occasion, I had the opportunity to attend one of the Winter Porsche Club Moscow activities with my 13 year

old daughter Solange (who is already expanding her knowledge of Porsche and asking her mother when she will be old enough to drive “Mum’s Car”) On a cold and snowy Saturday morning and after my traditional Russian breakfast of Borsch soup we made our way to the Porsche event where we were greeted by Moscow Porsche Club President Abu-Tarbush. On this occasion we were fortunate to be at an event held inside to escape the cold winter Moscow weather and to attend the 2nd phase of the FIFA Porsche Go Karting Cup held at Le Mans Go Karting

facility. It was a super fun event full of laughter and with around 30 participants who bounded over our shared our mutual love of Porsche.. I had the chance to share pictures of our activities on the club here and there, Anton Samsonov and Vladimir Tokunov welcomed me to the club and to Moscow! I had the honor to receive a Porsche Club of Russia member Tee Shirt which I wear in Miami with pride! It was a fantastic experience to meet other members that share this global passion for Porsche and the event was extremely exciting!
