President’s Corner Dan Doyle - President
Happy New Year, everyone!! A special congratulation to all of the officers and new directors that were recently elected to their positions. Steve Kidd and Paul Raben will be joining the board and Dottie Kidd will be rotating off. They have my sincerest appreciation for all they do and all they have done for GCR as many of them have been long time members of the region and have given of their time and talents for many years. Thank you all! As well, I want to thank everyone who works so hard to keep our region going.
GCR is fueled by volunteers. Without you, the volunteers, GCR would not be able to put on all of the events that everyone enjoys. Your time and your sacrifices are much appreciated. Speaking of time, 2017 flew by, didn’t it? What a fantastic year 2017 was for Gold Coast Region. Once again, we put on multiple driver education, auto cross, concours and social events which were fun for all. Now, it is time to do it all again! Stay tuned! As usual, Porsches & Pancakes is on the first Saturday of the month. Please take

Happy New Year Welcome to a brand new year, 2018. Please check out the new calendar that may be updated as the year proceeds but we want you to have a planning tool so that the PCA year may be added to your calendar. Updates will be real time on the website but may be delayed in the Kassette because our publication is laid out one month ahead. The planning team has many great events for you to enjoy with your family and of course your Porsche. The year starts off with our traditional brunch at the Big Chill in Key Largo.
Don’t miss this large caravan to the keys with a very relaxed brunch on the water. It does not get much better than this. The pioneers of this event, Beena and Ed Kohly, liked the area so much that they built a second home nearby. Congratulations to our new board members Steve Kidd and Paul Raben. They are both very hard workers and have supported many functions for PCA. At the same time, Paul has replaced Jerry Daily as 48 Hour Volunteer Co-Chair. Jerry will still be involved with this great event. At the end of this month join PCA race
fans at Daytona for the 24 Hour Rolex race. The following week we go to Sebring for the largest Porsche club race in the world, the 48 Hours at Sebring. Please volunteer and join us for a great race made possible by PCA volunteers. Contact Paul with any questions. The Porsches by the Bay had a great turn out and you can enjoy the layout and article by Alberto Pugliese. Alberto has provided great coverage in the past but will be helping with more of the material as we continue to grow and provide our members GCR/PCA coverage. See you at Roger the track,

Porsche By The Bay 2017 It seems every year the annual “Porsches By The Bay” reunion establishes itself as the premier Club event for the Gold Coast Chapter. Located on the magnificent lawn of the Mandarin hotel over looking Biscayne Bay, this year event was a sight to behold. The weather was spectacular and the only occasional distractions where multi-million dollar yachts cruising through the Intercostals Waterway. With over 120 cars in attendance, registration was capped and many late entrants were turned down due to space restrictions. Please sign up early next year! The Concours d’Elegance is always a highlight, and this 2017 entrants made the judges work extremely difficult. The quality and competition was exceptional. It seems south Florida is getting better and better at this type of challenge. It was obvious we have come a long way from a few years ago in the quality of preparation. Keep up the good work and a big thanks to the judges who all worked diligently to contribute to an outstanding occasion.

One particular group that stood out this year was Class 11, which featured the “low production, or rare cars.” This group was a sight to behold, and was highlighted by the magnificent, and extremely rare 1995 993 GT2. Keith Ennis of Classic Motors brought this gem to us. Wow! Thank you for that Keith, and congratulations on a spectacular “Best of Show” win. The highly coveted “Mike Joffee Award for Excellence” crowns this award A big thanks to Phil DeLeon from Boca Raton for bringing his stunning, and also very rare Porsche 959. Phil congratulations on a 1st place win in Class. This years’ second place winner was Carlos Chipi of Puerto Rico, with an extremely well prepared and jaw dropping 964 RS. Thank you Carlos for showing us that car, it was stunning! Finally a big thanks Oscar Melian of Miami for his 3rd place win with his fabulous 2016 911R. With a limited production of only 991 cars, and 250 in the USA, Oscar made the competition even more interesting. Thanks to everyone who participated in this years’ event. A special reach out to the volunteers who helped with the parking and worked behind the scenes. To Pete Olliviere who spearheaded the entire event. To our Judges who sacrificed a part of their day to serve the Club, and lastly, our sponsors, Parkhaus1, TuneRS Motorsports and Foreign Affairs. Thank you and see you next year if not before!

Tech Corner :
Quotable Quotes Article by Pedro P. Bonilla, Tech Editor
Recently, while doing research for another article, I came across a couple of interesting quotes regarding Porsche and thought it might be fun to compile a few more and share them here. Some are from people who’s last name is Porsche, mostly are from people who admire Porsches, others not so much. Enjoy. Ferdinand Porsche: Founder Dr. Ing. H.c. F. Porsche GmbH (1931) (Austrian) I couldn’t find the sports car of my dreams, so I built it myself. If one does not fail at times, then one has not challenged himself at times. Change is easy. Improvement is far more difficult. Porsche ... there is no substitute. Luft natürlich, weil es weder kocht oder friert. (Air, of course, because it doesn’t boil or freeze) – when asked what was best to cool a car engine. Ferdinand (Ferry) Anton Ernst Porsche: Son of Ferdinand. Porsche GmbH CEO (1948 – 1989) (Austrian) If you can create something time cannot erode, something which ignores the eccentricities of particular eras or moments, something truly timeless … this is the “ultimate victory”. Now, to put a water-cooled engine in the rear and to have a radiator in the front, that’s not very intelligent. (PANORAMA, Oct. ‘73) Ferdinand (Butzi) Alexander Porsche: Son of Ferry. Designer of the Porsche 911 & 904. Porsche Design CEO (German) A Porsche will always look like a Porsche. Good design only exists in concert with engineering. Designers need to be part engineer. Ferdinand Piëch: Grandson of Ferdinand. Porsche Engineer. Volkswagen AG CEO (Austrian) The lighter you make the car, the less weight there is to brake for a corner, to take around the corner and to accelerate from the corner.

Jerry Seinfeld: Comedian - Porsche collector (American) I have this old ‘57 Porsche Speedster, and the way the door closes, I’ll just sit there and listen to the sound of the latch going, ‘cluh-CLICKclick.’ That door! I live for that door. Robert Redford: Actor – Director. Environmentalist (American) I’ve always liked speed. I own a car that I shouldn’t be talking about because I’m an environmentalist, but the 1955 Porsche Spyder 550 RS is the finest sports car ever made.
Carroll Shelby: Racer - Car builder (American) Porsche and BMW drivers are arrogant. Thank God there’s no 48-hour race anywhere in the world, because chances are nobody could beat Porsche in a 48 hour race. They’re probably the only cars in the world that would stand up for something like that. Kevin O’Leary: Entrepreneur. TV Personality (Canadian / Irish) There are a lot of impractical things about owning a Porsche. But they’re all offset by the driving experience. It really is unique. Lamborghinis and Ferraris come close. And they are more powerful, but they don’t handle like a Porsche. Mark Donohue: Racer (American) “Remove the reverse gear please.” “But what if you spin and are facing the guardrail”? “Porsche doesn’t pay me to drive in reverse...”(speaking to a race engineer during testing for the Can Am 917-30)
Peter Schutz: Porsche AG CEO (1982 – 1987) (American) While the car could be temperamental at times, at least it had character. That’s what people loved most about it. (referring to the 911 of the 80s) Helmuth Bott: Porsche AG Chief engineer (German) Hardly any other vehicle concept has proven itself so thoroughly in so many different combinations over the years [as the 911]. Hans Mezger: Porsche’s most distinguished engine designer (German) When I graduated from Stuttgart University in 1956 I was offered many employment opportunities, including the large automobile manufacturers. Despite all these attractive options it was Porsche – a little company then – that caught my imagination. The appeal was their 356 sports car which for me was a most beautiful and interesting automobile. Bobby Allison: Racer (American) 911s are expensive “imported Corvairs. Alois Ruf: Car builder (German) With a Porsche you get more performance with less of everything.
Elon Musk Businessman - Car builder (Canadian / American) Yeah, well I think that anyone who likes fast cars will love the Tesla. And it has fantastic handling by the way. I mean this car will crush a Porsche on the track, just crush it. So, if you like fast cars, you’ll love this car. And then oh, by the way, it happens to be electric and it’s got twice the efficiency of a Prius.
Mark Webber: Racer (Australian) I own a bunch of classics, including a blue 1954 356 Cabriolet. It’s so dinky and intimate, you sit so close to your passenger and there’s no power steering. Sixty miles-per-hour feels like 120. At the other end of the scale I have a 918 Spyder, which is the most advanced Porsche ever built and an absolute beast to drive. So I have bookended the Porsche range quite nicely I think.
Dale Earnhardt Jr.: Racer (American) Once I let someone talk me into driving a slow as hell Corvette in a GP race and I spent all day getting passed by Porsches in this slow ass Vette. I was sitting in this thing thinking can I get a Porsche please. I mean I am a competitor and it just really stung getting passed lap after lap. I could not wait to get out of that damn car. I sure knew what the backside of a Porsche looked like after that day. About a week later I bought a Turbo 911
Derek Bell Racer (British) Back then (1980s) the philosophy was that it’s an honour to drive for Porsche, the money is irrelevant. The head of engineering (Helmuth Bott) made it clear to me that I shouldn’t earn more money than he did. A different world indeed.
Patrick Dempsey Racer and Actor – Car collector (American) It was a 1963 356. It was on the street in Santa Monica with a ‘For Sale’ sign. I’d just finished a movie called “Can’t Buy Me Love,” and I spent my entire paycheck on that car.
Hans-Joachim Stuck Racer (German) When I raced a Porsche last it was at a time when sex was safe and racing was dangerous. Now it’s the other way around.
Steve McQueen Racer/Actor – Actor/Racer (American) Playing the role of Michael Delaney in “Le Mans” Dan Gurney Racer – Car builder (American) I would never have guessed that my first Formula 1 win which happened in a Porsche, at Rouen, France in 1962 would also be Porsche’s first and last.
Jacky Ickx Racer (Belgian) Our 1977 Le Mans was a special win because, in my opinion, it was the most beautiful one. Everyone in the Porsche Team attained an impossible thing. It was truly amazing!

48 X 25 I am now 100% sure that this is the 25th running of the 48Hours at Sebring PCA Club Race. There are a very few individuals who remember being there for the first event. I am not one of them. I DO remember the early 90s, I was still driving Supras at the time. Ahh yes the Toyota Supra. I had 4…or was it 5 of them. Nice cars. Don’t see many on the road these days though. My first Supra was one of my favorites (of course). It was a gorgeous 1980 Toyota Celica Surpra. Jet Black with some awesome ground effects, including a serious front air dam, SUPRA decals along the doors, and very dark tinted windows. Sweet. Unfortunately I “rolled” that Supra into the parking lot of a fitness center one dark and stormy night in those early 90s….blew out every window when it landed on the roof. I clearly remember crawling out of the passenger window, (the car was upside down), and watching as the wheels were still turning and the cops were arriving. Funny the first thought I had looking back at the car was wow those rear tires are seriously wide! I learned a lot that night and thankfully, haven’t rolled a car since. I switched to Porsches in the late 90’s. By then the 48 Hours at Sebring was already a few years old. It is a fact, that at this upcoming event, in February 2018, we do indeed celebrate the 25th time the Goldcoast and Sun Coast Regions have run a PCA Club Race at Sebring. Somehow, for a little while the numbers got screwy. One thing we know, this event is put on by a large volunteer Committee of incredibly talented and committed individuals working together as a team. There are a million details to putting together an event like this…and consequently a million ways for something to go wrong. So you see we were busy redoing the logos for this event, to include two things: announcing it as the 25th anniversary and adding the years that the event has run. The first draft was beautiful. Graphic Artist extraordinaire Kirk Giannola, a long time friend of the event, had dug in, populated the new logo with all the info and sent out proofs. As I said, it was beautiful. Yes indeed 25 years…1993 to 2018. Amazing. Then came the call from Dick Kjellsen. Now then, most folks know Dick as Mr. Microphone. Dick has been the announcer at every 48Hours Race (as well as many other events) since the very beginning.
So, Dick says “Hey there guys, my memory can be a little foggy on some things these days, but I am very sure I was there for the first event and I’m pretty sure it was 1994 not 1993.” HUH? Wait… math cramp… 2018 – 1993 =25 right, if you were born in 93, you could vote in 2006, buy booze in 2014 and would be 25 in 2018! But if 48 Hours number 1 was in ‘93 that makes 2018 #26! What manner of math madness is this? Is this #25 or #26? To the rescue comes our dear friend Dottie Kidd. Dottie digs into the boxes of archives and comes up with an official program from the inaugural event. It was indeed 1994. So…. yes this is the 25th anniversary, and the dates are 1994 to 2018. Now I have to say we certainly have had a lot of fun with this and a couple of things come to mind: With so many details handled by so many individuals, when something goes wonky it is nice to know we have each other’s back! Nice catch Dick! The 48Hrs Committee is as usual, amazing. But what about those logos…was the catch in time to redo all those logos…hundreds of different items, including posters, programs, hats, bags and all those t-shirts? All branded with the 25 Anniversary logo! Maybe, maybe not… Bonus points for anyone that finds any 48Hours booty that went out with that original logo on it! If, in the past 25 years you have not ever been to the 48Hours at Sebring you are missing out on what is truly the Crown Jewel in the Goldcoast Sun Coast PCA Regions events calendar. If you have been there we hope to see you again. Come to play, come to say hey or come to Volunteer. Easy Volunteer signup at:
