President’s Corner Dan Doyle - President
This is your president speaking……… Ok, I’ve always wanted to say that!!!! Initially I’d like to say that I’m both honored and humbled to be your president. I will do everything in my power to continue the good work that has been done by all of the presidents before me. It is on their shoulders that I stand. As my first official act, I’d like to wish you all a very Happy New Year!! As my second official act, I’d like to congratulate all the new officers and directors that were recently elected to their positions. It is with their continued help, and only with their help, that I will be able to perform my job as president. They have my sincerest appreciation for all they do and all they have done since many of them have been long time members of the region and have given of their time and talents for many years.
I’ve been a member of the Porsche Club of America, Gold Coast Region (“GCR”) since 2007. Since joining the region I’ve been a member of the board of directors, the Driver Education Chairman and the Vice President. It has been a tremendous amount of work but also incredibly rewarding. I’ve had the opportunity to meet a lot of wonderful people with some amazing cars. I can’t imagine a better group of people to spend my spare (and not so spare!) time with! It’s why I volunteer my time to the region and to the members. On that note, I want to thank everyone who works so hard to keep our region running. GCR is fueled by volunteers. Without you, the volunteers, GCR would not be able to put on all of the events that people like to engage in and would cease to exist as an organization. Your time and your sacrifices are much appreciated.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!! Speaking of time, 2016 flew by, didn’t it? What a fantastic year 2016 was for Gold Coast Region. Once again we put on multiple driver education, auto cross, concours and social events which were fun for all. Now, it is time to do it all again! We start 2017 with our usual Porsches & Pancakes on the first Saturday of the month. For those of you interested in sports car racing, the Rolex 24 at Daytona happens at the end of that same month. Please come visit me at the Porsche tent where I’ll be serving water and snacks to the Porsche fans! I’m looking forward to seeing all of you in 2017! Drive smart! Dan

Happy New Year Welcome to 2017 Porsche style. I hope you had a great time celebrating Christmas, Hanukkah, and New Years with your family. A very nice time of the year to give thanks, relax and get ready for the following year. I hope you have started planning your Porsche calendar year so you don’t miss any of the fun. Our drive to Key Largo for brunch at the Big Chill with 100 GCR members is a great way to start the year and caravan your Porsche. Not long after we will be at the 24 Hour Rolex race in Daytona. Stop by the PCA Porsche tent and visit with members from around the world. You may also pick up some info from the Porsche factory engineers.
Please sign up to volunteer for the 48 Hours at Sebring PCA Club Race the following week. We have included many pages to showcase the event and educate you about volunteering for the event. Once you have attended the event it becomes an event never to miss. Last year we had a special vendors showcase which was outstanding. Look for an upscale of last year on Friday and Saturday night with some special surprises. This event is a favorite with PCA national and has become the largest PCA club race in the world. Many of the pros that compete in the Rolex also drive in this event that is hosted by Gold Coast and Suncoast Regions. You may have noticed that the Kassette

put on some weight over the holidays. We are now 48 pages thanks to our loyal advertisers and members that send their very interesting articles. Please keep your outstanding articles coming for other members to enjoy. We try to provide new and exciting events for everyone. The cover photo is a first, thanks to Peter Olliviere planning an event to showcase Porsches that are often forgotten. Porsche models 924, 928, 944, and 968 were well represented and showcased inside the large air conditioned maintenance area, thanks for the hospitality of Porsches of West Broward. They have also become our centerfold. Check out their attached coupon this month.

48 Hours Club Race Volunteers The 48 Hours At Sebring Club race committee has begun making plans for the 2017 race to be held February 2 thru 5 2017. It’s time for all Gold Coast and Suncoast members to start planning how they can get involved. It is your opportunity to give back to your region and be involved with the most successful Club Race in PCA and help raise money for region activities and The Ronald McDonald House charity. Start making plans and reservations to make it a weekend of fun and excitement. Where will you be? What will you be doing? What could you be doing that would possibly equal spending a weekend at world famous Sebring International Raceway with about 500 Porsches? Talk about a car show: this is the largest Porsche only racing event in the world – in fact, it is the largest single marque automobile racing event in the world! How could you miss it, especially when it is almost in your back yard! Last year’s 23rd annual event was a great success: we had over 450 participating Porsches. Now, it’s the time to start planning on how you can assist in this great event. Make hotel reservations for

the days you plan to attend. Pick from the available assignments listed below. This is a joint event consisting of friends from Gold Coast Region and Suncoast Region, the 24th edition will be even bigger and better. The 48 Hours at Sebring has grown into the largest PCA Club Race in the country. We expect to sign up over 350 racers and Advanced Solo drivers in the first two days of registration. This means we will need volunteers to help us run this huge event more than ever. Why should you care? If you are a PCA member that has been standing on the sidelines, wanting to become involved, but unsure of actually attending your first event, this is a perfect opportunity to see what PCA is all about, and meet a group of really nice people! You will be asked to work for a few hours at a job that is actually more fun than work, you get a nice T-Shirt, free lunch and free Friday night beer and wine party. You also just might meet someone who just won the Daytona 24 Hour race, or past winners of Daytona 24, Sebring 12 Hour or Le Mans 24 Hour, or maybe someone who has won them all. For sure you will not find a better gathering of Porsches and

by Jerry Daily, 48 hour volunteer chair Porsche people anywhere. The Club race raises thousands of dollars for Ronald McDonald House each year and provides the Gold Coast and Suncoast regions funds to support Socials, Drivers Ed and AutoX programs and help local charities. What can you do to help? At Track Registration We need 4 or 5 people to assist with getting the drivers checked in, this is an indoor sitting job that begins at 7:00 AM Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The first couple of hours are the busiest so you need to be a morning person. The Grid, we have a lot of people returning from last year to work the grid, but we still need a few more for each day. You need to be in good shape as it entails a lot of standing and walking. Your primary responsibilities are. 1. Helping get each car in its assigned spot based on information on a timing sheet provided by Timing & Scoring. 2. Doing a quick check of the car to make sure that it is not dripping any liquids, engine & trunk lids are closed and secured. 3. Checking the driver to en-
sure that he or she is buckled in, with helmet on and secure. 4. Direct traffic at several locations to assist racers to the grid or back to their paddock area after each run.. Timing and Scoring, we need about 5 volunteers each day. You will assist the stewards in identifying the cars as they go past the start/finish line to verify that their timing equipment is working properly. You will also assist in the preparation of the timing sheets for distribution to the grid. This is a nice comfortable inside job but it is the heart beat of the race. Tech and Scales, we need a volunteers each day to help check the Advanced Solo group cars for tire pressure, Torque lug nuts and check helmets, brake lights. Thursday and Friday are the busiest days for tech. Scales are open Friday through Sunday. The race cars are weighed on the scales to make sure they are the proper weight for their car and class. Volunteers are needed to push the cars on the scales. The Corners, we need volunteers to assist the SCCA corner-workers at each corner. This is truly where the action is! Working the corners is a fun and action packed assignment. Each corner throughout the track is manned by 1-2 professional SCCA corner workers. For each corner,
we assign a maximum of 2 volunteers to assist the SCCA corner workers. We have many volunteers who return each year and request a specific corner or corner worker. It’s amazing how much you can learn while watching skilled drivers go through a corner lap after lap. There is no better way to get closer to the action unless you are actually driving!! The responsibilities for the corner are: 1. You are an extra set of eyes and ears for the SCCA corner worker, helping observe the activities on the track; 2. In the event of an incident the corner worker may ask you to hold or wave the appropriate flag. 3. You may be asked to assist with any reporting of an on track incident. Notes. At no time would you go over the wall! Long pants and closed-toe shoes are required please do not wear colors that would be confused as a flag, for example red or yellow. White or the 48 Hour T-shirt are perfect. Pit Marshalls, This is a Sunday-only job which starts around 10:00 AM with a meeting with the race steward. This position is needed during the Enduro. Each driver is required to make a 5 minute pit stop during the each Enduro.
January 2017
|
We need at least 12 people to observe the pit stops. The responsibilities for Pit marshals are, 1. Observe and report to PCA scrutinizer any spilled fuel etc. 2. Observe and report any crew member over the wall without proper equipment 3. Make sure that the maximum number of crew over the wall is not exceeded. 4. Enforce all rules as instructed by PCA Scrutinizers. Notes. Long pants and closed-toe shoes are required. Training will be provided by PCA officials. Miscellaneous Positions. We need other volunteers to help with the Friday and Saturday night activities This is where we raise the most money for the charities. We need a few other volunteers to take on whatever task that may come up. We had 24 people at the Gallery Grill in Tequesta. Our group tends to be a little older than the Miami/Ft. Lauderdale groups and do not have the same interests as the other groups but we find many things to talk about. Several have more than one Porsche and have had most models during their life time. I had 3 people signup to help with www.48hoursatsebring.com We had a good variety of Porsches there, 5 Caymans from 2007 thru 2016, we had a mint 1965 SC and 1971 911, a 993 Cab, a couple of Boxsters, a 997 and a 2015 Turbo Cab. Oh and a 430 Ferrari. red of course.

Farewell to two Gold Coast Legends by Fred Kohly
Lou Gonzalez Lou Gonzalez passed away November 14, 2016 and he will be missed. He was an extraordinary man with a passion for excellence for whatever venture he would undertake. He was a prominent member of our Gold Coast Porsche Club Chapter and helped in many ways shape the future of what was to become one of the largest PCA member regions. He served as Club President in 1994 as well as in various other capacities. During his membership Lou participated one way or another in practically all activities the Club had to offer. He did auto-cross, DE events, and of course eventually Concours competitions, where he has a large collection of trophies for his outstanding cars. The latter is the one I will remember him for the most. Lou was an outstanding person, friend and mentor. He helped shave years from my learning curve and was a wealth of knowledge, particularly for early 911s and 944s. He was a reliable friend that I could always count on for information and wisdom. Over the years he had helped me fix things on my cars and taught me how to prepare them. I always knew if I needed anything he would be there to help enthusiastically. I will miss him dearly. Lou was a national PCA Concours Judge and participated in various other Concours d’Elegance events throughout the state, such as The Boca Raton Concours, and the Winter Park Concours. He was a tremendous asset in all our regional and local competitions. His knowledge and keen eye for detail made him exceptional, and of course he was a perfectionist. I guess some of that rubbed off from his distinguished career as an architect, where details, and more details matter. He could fix anything, and not just fix, but it had to be correct and perfect. He was also a little bit of a scientists and could figure things our fairly quickly. Lou was one of the backbones of the Club. Goodbye Lou‌.

Anita Canfield I met Anita Canfield in the fall of 1986. We met at Roebling Road Racetrack, turn four workers’ station. Unknowingly, we had both volunteered to work on that particular corner. We were new at club track events and we were both anxious to learn. Needless to say, by the end of the session, we exchanged phone numbers and it was the beginning of a friendship that I cherished for over 30 years. Bill and Anita, Ernie and I did a lot of miles of traveling to and from tracks, Porsche events, HSR and a few Bay Bottom Crawls. The icing on the cake was when Brian Canfield and our boys – Carlos and JoseLuis would join us at the track. I remember those times with a smile and plenty of gratitude. We started learning together but Anita had a passion for every new venture that she undertook. She was a perfectionist and it did not take long for her learning curve to take her to race with the “guys”. She bit quite a few of them too. She loved her Porsches and she enjoyed the challenge. In all of our 30 years of friendship, we had one argument: She did not approve of my “Opel line” through turn 17 at Sebring… If you could measure friendship by how much we shared over 30 years, we had an outstanding friendship. Even though we would not see each other for months at a time, we would get together and carry on in an instant. Over the years, we learned to love Porsches and racetracks. We race-walked many miles together and on those walks, one by one, we fixed all of the world’s problems. I feel honored and grateful to had been her friend. We’ll pick up in an instant when we get together again. In the meantime, I miss you! --
Anita’s Checkered Flag To the members of Gold Coast Region PCA, past and present, The Canfield Family would like to thank everyone in the Gold Coast Region for enriching Mom’s life in ways you can’t possibly imagine. Being a part of PCA gave Anita a tremendous sense of belonging, purpose, and pride. Together, she and I took part in just about everything PCA offers! Since joining in 1984, we participated in concours, autocross, rally, drivers’ ed. events, tech quizzes, social events, and National Parades as well as Club Racing and being region board members. We both earned our instructor status in 1986 and Anita later went on to become Zone 12 Rep for 6 years and loved every minute of it. Being active with such a wonderful group of people and feeling loved and appreciated made her so very happy and she described her years with PCA and vintage racing as the best time of her life! For all that, we say “Thank you!” As an instructor, Anita’s lessons weren’t confined to a race track; she also gave great life’s lessons. I would like to share just one that has always stuck with me: Never forget to say “Thank you.” Everyone that contributes to the club does so as a volunteer. Please remember to thank them for their time and efforts whenever you can, and try to remember Anita’s smile when you do! Our heartfelt thanks,

CELEBRATING 40 YEARS OF THE CLASSIC WATER COOLED PORSCHE 924, 944, 928, 968 by Peter Olliviere 924, 944, 928, 968, Coordinator.
40 years ago Porsche decided that a new direction was needed in the basic design of their classic 911. Even back then they realized that moving into the future, the rear mounted engine wasn’t the ideal solution for a sports car. They also realized that with coming emission regulations, being air cooled wasn’t ideal either. So Porsche did two things that to this day they felt was their future direction. Porsche designed and introduced the line of front engine water cooled cars. For the most part these cars were met with utter distain by the Porsche community. The engine was in the wrong place and it was water cooled. The “villagers” were trying to break down the door to destroy the engineers that ever thought of creating such monsters. The line of cars that Porsche produced saved the company, where the 911 couldn’t do it, the 944 and its siblings did.

Now 40 years later the Gold Coast Region decided to recognize and celebrate these great cars. The event was hosted by Porsche of West Broward in Davie and we couldn’t have had a better location. The General Manager, Justin Hoisington, invited the club to use the entire service facility to house the event in air conditioned comfort. The Gold Coast Region would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Porsche West Broward. When this event was put together we had no clear idea of what the interest or turn out would be. Well we were greatly surprised when 41 Classic Water Cooled Porsches “turned out”. The party included 10 928’s including a GT manual and a GTS manual. 10, 968’s that included 8 Cabriolets. 21, 944’s that included Turbos, S2, and 944S, and 924’s. It was truly a fantastic collection of cars! I might be wrong, but I believe that this

was the largest gathering of these classic water cooled cars ever in Florida. If someone knows different, let me know. But as always with this club, it’s not just the cars but the people. We had a tremendous showing of people that didn’t own any of these cars but just wanted to enjoy the show. The turnout shows the resurging popularity of what was once the forgotten Porsches. A last-minute addition to the fun was a Classic Water Cooled Technical Quiz that turned out to be a great hit. Prizes were awarded for the highest three scores. We have included the quiz here so you tail draggers can try your hand. Lastly, we would like to expand on this event for next year, maybe include a specific autocross, let us know your ideas.

Tech Corner : Gauge it! ... Article by Pedro P. Bonilla, Tech Editor
Even though the early 986 Boxsters (‘97 - ‘04) shared up to 60% of its parts with the Carrera 996 (‘99 - ‘04) there were a few obvious missing pieces in the Boxster (and then Cayman) that the Carrera had. Aside from the bigger and more powerful engine, the instrument cluster from the Carrera was abridged and offered in the Boxster and then in the Cayman (’06+).
As you can see in the image, the 996 (top) and 986 (bottom) instrument clusters are identical in physical size and appearance but the 996 has 2 additional gauges, one at each end, where the 986 has a blank space. They both share the tachometer (RPM counter) in the center, to its left is the speedometer and to its right, a combo gauge which shows coolant temperature and gas level.
... gauges there is good news! You can easily add them to your car while maintaining a “factory” look. Use one of the empty cubby spaces in your upper center console to install up to 3 gauges side-by-side.
I had taken care of that one a long time ago by adding a digital volt-meter on my fusebox cover, which I can see through the steering wheel.
Since my car’s main gauges have white faces and black bezels I matched the look to the new ones I installed in the center console. In my particular case, because I track my car regularly, I opted for an oil temperature gauge (center) and 2 oil pressure gauges, one on each side. The left one is for the engine’s operating oil pressure, the right one is for the Accusump’s operating pressure. But you may be asking, what about the volt gauge?
What the 986 is missing is a volt-meter gauge (extreme left) and an oil pressure gauge (extreme right). Both gauges are very important, especially for a sport car driver who wants to be informed of his engine’s status. If you have a first or second generation Boxster or Cayman which is missing these

Depending on your needs, there are many gauges that can be installed, such as: Oil Temp, Oil Pressure, Coolant Temp, Transmission Temp, Voltage, Stoichiometric Point, Vacuum Boost, Nitrous Pressure, Exhaust Gas Temp, etc. They can have white, black or silver face with a black, aluminum or chrome bezel.
Some of the gauges are very easy to install and require no drilling or tapping, such as voltage and oil pressure. For the voltage, two wires (red and black) connect to the 12 volt outlet’s red and black wires. For the oil pressure, Porsche provided a port right on the engine, where you remove a factory plug and replace with an adapter where the temperature sensor screws into. One side of the sensor goes to ground and just one wire goes to the gauge in the dash.
If you’d like a digital volt meter, like mine, it’s also just 2 wires (ground and positive) It’s that simple, so go on and gauge it!

A Teenager’s Prospective of DE for the First Time by Emmy Holman My mom and dad have enjoyed owning Porsches for years and as I’ve gotten older I’ve appreciated the cars too. About a year ago I asked my dad about PCA/PBOC track events and when I could participate in them. Needless to say, I couldn’t wait until I could join in all the fun! I just finished my first DE at Homestead this October and had a fantastic time. I really expected it to be harder and was worried that I wouldn’t do well, especially since I only learned how to drive a stickshift three days earlier! I also thought the people would be a little more intimidating since I didn’t know much about track driving. What I was hoping for was to be more confident about the car and myself when I finished. I wanted to learn how to be a safer driver and the limits of the car. And I wanted to learn about safe driving at high speed.

The DE program was super – I did become more confident in my own abilities. I learned how to handle the car and what it was capable of. I loved being able to drive fast in a safe environment and I know more about braking, turns and acceleration than I ever did before. My instructor, Orlando LaCalle, made the day super for me. I just loved him – he was very patient, took the time to explain everything thoroughly and was a fantastic teacher. He had confidence in me, appreciated that I listened and learned, and was quick to praise good performance. He really made the program awesome! I would tell other newcomers to DE that it’s a lot of fun and not as hard as you might think; you catch on fast. I was worried about being in the way of people behind me, but passing and point-by’s were explained well and took the pressure off.

As for young people considering DE for the first time, don’t be intimidated by all the people who are involved that are older than you – you can do just as well. The people at the DE really were great, everybody was friendly and supportive – and maybe they just liked to see young people show an interest in the sport! The instructors are there to help, you only have to listen to them. Don’t be afraid of the DE program or the track. It’s so much fun, you get to drive fast in a safe environment with friendly people who want to help you learn. It’s really awesome at any age!
