President’s Corner 2020 Has Left the Building!!! Its 7:00 AM on November 30th as I sit down to write this article. You won’t see it until January 2021, so I won’t spend a lot of time on past events since most of those things would have been covered by the immediate Past President. My intention is to focus on the New Year and to set a tone for 2021. As I see it, as the new President, I have a couple of challenges that the Club needs to be guided through. As can be guessed Coved 19 is one of them. In 2020 because of the Virus, we were forced to take steps to minimize the exposure of our Club members. The only way to effectively accomplish that was to move events later into the year hoping that the virus would clear up. When that didn’t occur, we were forced to cancel those events. Some events did occur, such as the North Carolina event, but for the most part we have been shut down. As I write this, the virus is once again on the rise, but the hope is that with the advance of a vaccine and therapeutics, we will begin to get the pandemic under control. You as an individual have the right to make your own decisions as it relates to exposure and risk to your health, but as a Club the Board of Directors must follow the directions of the National Organization on how much exposure we allow the membership at PCA sponsored events.

Peter Olliviere, President

With that being said, we are working to introduce new events that are more interesting to our members, but still keep everyone safe. We will be introducing more touring events. Although Florida is not the most scenic of states, we do have several interesting roads and small towns in the northern part of the state. We can do overnight drives to these areas and enjoy the scenic beauty that these areas offer. Most of these drives will be two-day events. We could leave on Saturday morning, enjoy the drive, dine together that night, and then return home the next morning. I believe that a number of our members do not want to drive several hours to a destination and then have to drive home the same day. So along with two-day events will be closed-loop events, such as poker runs that are somewhat competitive but end were we start. The bottom line is that if you like to drive you will be able to do a lot of it in 2021. We will continue to carefully monitor our social events and try to walk that fine line between enjoying ourselves and keeping every one safe. Social events are the hardest to manage because by their very nature people are intermingling in a small area, thus creating the highest level of risk. But our Social Directors will continue to work to create events that overcome the obstacles and are fun.

By now you should be aware that a new region has been created from the northern portion of the Gold Coast Region. I’m not going to go into detail here because I will be dedicating a special article to that topic and its impact on us, but the new region creation will provide many positive opportunities for us in Gold Coast. My priorities for 2021 is membership participation, the goal being to get more of you, the members, interested enough to volunteer your time in bettering the Club experience. All too often in groups the old rule takes over: 20 percent of the membership does 80 percent of the work. We have to change that and the only way I can see that happening is to offer opportunities that align with your interests. You the membership must be made more aware of what’s going on internally so you know what decisions are being made on your behalf, and you are given the opportunity to get directly involved. I want your questions, thoughts, and suggestions; they can only make the Club better. Forget 2020, Put your foot down, and let’s go flat out for 2021.

Peter

Editor’s Notes Happy New Year

Welcome to a new year of Porsche events. We plan to get back to an active schedule while following safety guidelines. Check out the updated “Porsches and Pancakes” listing on page 21. We are developing our 2021 calendar so keep checking for updates on our website calendar. A big thank you to the 2020 GCR leadership team who made major changes to improve the club and welcome to the new 2021 team of officers and directors who will continue to improve our program. We have many new members who stepped up to the plate by volunteering to lead an event and now some of them serve on the board of directors. We encourage all of the members to get involved. This year

Roger Fabel, Editor

you will see more plans to help members become engaged. In December we held a new members social and car judging contest to help our members become more aware of what PCA has to offer. If you enjoy Porsche racing and want to get closer to the action there is still time to sign up as a volunteer at the 48 Hours of Sebring Club race. For more information go to page 27 and sign up today. This event in early February follows the Rolex 12 Hours race at Daytona and many of the teams travel to the Sebring event for more racing. This event, co-chaired by the Gold Coast and Suncoast regions, has become my favorite PCA event for the past 15 plus years.

If you miss the changing of the seasons check out the beautiful photographs from our social team taken during their annual GCR trip to the mountains. All of the Porsches reported that they enjoyed the challenging twisty roads compared to the straight line Florida roads. Judging from Christy’s expression, the drivers also enjoyed the ride. Great photos from our photo team! Welcome to tthe Gulfstream Region! We would like to welcome our new region in the northern area of southeast Florida. Many hard working GCR members have been working on this new region formation for a long time. More details will be published soon along with a calendar of events.

Running of the Turkeys Story and photos by Peter Olliviere

The year 2020 has not been a good one. From the confusion of an election year to the horror that has been the COVID-19 virus. It has gotten harder and harder to ignore the fact that people are hurting. What’s more disturbing is that the hurt has attacked more than just the poor; it has reached out and affected those in our community who have historically been a part of the economically stable. Many people have lost jobs, businesses, and other sources of income. What used to be stable can’t be counted on anymore. For many it’s a new experience that in one minute you’re going out to dinner, and in the next you are waiting in a food line hoping no one you know sees you. Let’s hope this is not the new normal. For several years I have spearheaded the charitable outreach that the Gold Coast Region undertakes. We have been successful in raising several thousands of dollars for various worthy causes. Unfortunately this year, 2020, almost sneaked by without the Club doing anything to benefit those less fortunate than ourselves. We could be forgiven for

10

this oversite; after all, most of our events have been cancelled this year because of government mandates, or from concern of catching or spreading the virus. That was the case until I was contacted by local government officials looking for assistance in helping those in the Ft. Lauderdale community. In other words putting help into the hands of those who needed it the most. When the request came for assistance in a food drive, the Gold Coast Region’s Board of Directors stepped up by pledging to supply 500 turkeys for Thanksgiving that would be given away free of charge. On November 22nd, the Turkey Giveaway was held at Joseph Carter Park in Ft. Lauderdale and was an amazing success. Volunteers from the City of Ft. Lauderdale, Broward HBCU Consortium and the Gold Coast Region distributed gift cards for 500 turkeys along with the fixings that make a complete meal. The event was scheduled to start at 9:00 AM, but cars started to line up at 4:00 in the morning. By the time we started the distribution the line extended through the

Kassette | Jan 2021

entire park and out onto Sunrise Blvd. a distance of just over a quarter of a mile. We were able to support two lines of cars, which entered one side of the park and then proceeded through the Distribution Station where the foodstuff and gift cards were given out. Over 750 families were served in total, and 500 turkeys distributed. Did I mention the rain? I was very proud of the Gold Coast Volunteers because they persevered with the distribution even when the skies opened up on us. The rain varied from a light sprinkle to heavy downpours throughout the morning. The rain made the event a little sloppy, but it did not stop our volunteers from performing the work that needed to be done. For those who donated to the event, thank you; your dollars went a long way towards reaching our goal. To those who also gave their time and energy to volunteer, a double thanks to you. This Club has never shied away from helping when it could, and I’m glad to see that 2020 has been no different.

GCR Trip to Little Switzerland, North Carolina and Shadow’s Return to the Mountain Roads During the years 1996-2002, my late husband, Frank and I lived in Johnson City in northeast Tennessee. Frank’s father, who had owned a 1985 944 for several years, passed the 944 I named “Shadow” down to Frank. We drove Shadow everywhere, for travel, for errands, and for the next several years we drove it to the 24 hours of Daytona (now known as the Rolex 24 at Daytona). At that time, Interstate 26 was not completed in western North Carolina and we had to traverse the Sams Gap Mountain Pass (US 23) that consists of steep, winding mountain roads from Johnson City to Asheville to access I-26. Even though it was fun driving Shadow on these roads, we never thought of it as a pleasure drive, but as a necessity to get from point A to point B. We did not know that there were places like the Diamond Back or the Tail of the Dragon nearby where people would come to drive for fun. We even avoided the Blue Ridge Parkway due to the amount of tourist traffic. When I signed up for the Little Switzerland, North Carolina trip and looked at the map, I saw how close we would be to where Frank and I had lived and decided to take Shadow back to the mountain roads. On the first day of the trip, I met up with GCR members Cynthia and Jay to caravan to Savannah, Georgia and spend the night. We enjoyed the evening by strolling among the beautiful southern live oak trees with the Spanish moss hanging from them. The next morning, we headed into North Carolina and met up with other GCR members in Chimney Rock at the Burnt Shirt Vineyards Tasting Room and Bistro that overlooks Chimney Rock mountain for lunch. After lunch, a few of us walked across the street to take in the sights by the river and I could not resist dipping my toes into the beautiful clear,

Southern Live Oak trees in Savannah cold water. We made a stop in Hendersonville and picked up some treats at the McFarlan Bake Shop then continued on to Little Switzerland, driving part of the Diamond Back to get there. As we were starting a trek up the mountain road, a road crew pulled out in front of us and stopped on a very steep portion of the narrow two-lane road to pick up cones. I’m sure many of you can appreciate how difficult it is to be driving a stick shift in first gear, in stop-and-go mode at two miles per hour up a mountain road. Finally there was a pass where we could get around the road crew - whew! We made it to the Switzerland Inn and Shadow drove great the whole way there. My longtime friend,

Lisa, who lives in Charlotte, drove in to spend the weekend with me and joined our group that night for dinner. The next day we started the drive on the Diamond Back and a group of us then headed to Asheville for lunch at Luella’s Bar-B-Que. Afterwards we headed to the New Belgium Brewery to enjoy a beer while relaxing in their beer garden. We took the Blue Ridge Parkway from Asheville back to the Switzerland Inn, stopping at a few scenic spots along the way. I was really enjoying the scenic drives and the way the Shadow handled the roads. On the fourth day, the group took the Blue Ridge Parkway to Crabtree Falls. We parked and traversed the mile and a half hike to the falls. Parts of the hike were a little tricky, but well worth it. The falls were beautiful. We hiked back to the cars and headed to the Linville Falls Winery for wine tasting and lunch. They had a very large patio area for seating with beautiful views of the grape vines and Christmas tree farm. Things can be unpredictable with a 35-year-old car and when we got back to the Switzerland Inn, coolant began pouring out of Shadow. Well, this is a problem

Shadow in the mountains River side with Carolyn, Cynthia and Jay and Shadow is the reason I subscribe to the premier tier of AAA. Kyle was on the trip and I appreciated his advice on what to do with the car. Jay researched and found a shop specializing in Porsches and foreign cars in Charlotte and I made plans to extend my trip and stay with Lisa. On Sunday, the AAA tow truck was there first thing in the morning to hook up Shadow for the 126-mile tow to Charlotte. The tow driver said that the top two cars he tows from the Blue Ridge Parkway are Porsches and Corvettes. Lisa and I met the tow driver at Touring Car Inc. in Charlotte to drop it off. October North Carolina Great Fall Getaway Article and photos by Cynthia Diaz It was a wonderful six days and five nights of fun fall adventures with the PCA-GCR family. We had a smaller group this year due to the COVID-19, so we socially distanced and everyone stayed safe. 10/21 On our first night, we stopped and stayed overnight in Savannah, Georgia. We stayed in the Historic District and did a wonderful walk. We stopped for a quick beer at Moon River Brewery, where Sheila & George Gasson from GCR had shared photos on FB a few nights before. We had a nice dinner overlooking the river and then it was off to Leopold’s Ice Cream, which is the best and a must-do when in the area! 10/22 Our first stop was at the Burntshirt Vineyard Restaurant and Tasting Room, while overlooking Chimney Rock and a beautiful waterfall. We met the other part of our GCR family, led by Ed Blair, for lunch. Our little group of four diverted to Hendersonville to explore the city and go to McFarlan’s Bakery. The town had a bear-themed auction, the Bearfootin Virtual Auction. We then drove to Asheville for a deli-

cious lunch at Luella’s Bar-B-Que and afterward had reservations at New Belgium Brewing, where Fat Tire and many other national brands are created. Beautiful day. We made our way to Little Switzerland Inn in time for sunset and dinner with the entire group. 10/23-10/24 Fabulous drives throughout the Blue Ridge Parkway. We did a big group hike to Crabtree Waterfalls. It was a rather challenging walk due to the wet terrain and rocks, and it was well worth the effort. We worked up an appetite and drove to Linville Falls Winery for lunch and wine tasting. We sat overlooking gorgeous fall colors in the grapevine hills. 10/25 Jay and I left to go for brunch to Spartanburg to meet his nephew and girlfriend before our trip back to Florida. We drove to St. Augustine in time for a colorful sunset and dinner outside at Harry’s Seafood Bar & Grill. Since we had very little time to look around, and it is such a beautiful city, I would like to plan a 2021 overnight GCR drive and overnight stay in St. Augustine. 10/26 We stopped at Moonswiner’s Bar-B-Q for lunch and made our way back home.

Autocross Update Steve Kidd, Autocross Chair

Thanks to all the participants who supported our abbreviated AutoX program in 2020.The COVID-19 pandemic forced the cancellation of several events and the inability to schedule others. Also . . . a bigger thanks to the core group of workers that came early or stayed late to help with set-up and tear-down and everything in between. And congratulations are in order for our class winners. To be eligible for a class championship in 2020, competitors must have attended at least 2 of our 3 AX events and accrue more points than others in your class. Visit the GCR website to see AX events times and year-end points. As many of you have seen, COVID-19 has changed the way we run AX events. Socially distanced course walking will be available and masks required when necessary. If you have registered, but did not sign the online CDW and PCA waiver, please go back into club registration to sign. A copy of the driver meeting notes and self-tech form will be sent out to all paid registrants a few days before any event. An AX registration is not considered complete unless you sign both the PCA general wavier, COVID wavier, as well as any requirements the track/venue has to enter the complex. To continue offering a world-class AX program we need a new site. This could be a BIG parking lot, air strip or similar piece of pavement in the Tri-County area to hold our AutoX events. In the past we have used shopping center lots, sporting and gaming venues and school/government parking facilities. We most recently used the BBT Center parking lot, which was great: big, centrally located and reasonably priced. A repaving project put an end to that lot. Let’s hope that interruption is temporary, but it very well could be permanent. What we need is an “in”: someone who has a connection to a suitable property and can help us get our foot in the door. Do you know of a site? Are you the person with the “in”? Please call me at 954 946-3196 if you can help out finding a new AX site. In 2020 all of our AX events were at Sebring in conjunction with a Club Race or a regional DE’s. While this has proved doable, members have expressed a preference not to drive so far. Preferably, the site should be no more than a one-hour drive from the North Broward/South Palm Beach county line. Photo of the Month by Christy Spangler, photo of the month chair

Ocean Drive 2020 This month’s photo was submitted by Kristine Olson of Miami. Kristine had lived in Manhattan, NY for eight years, and did not have or need a vehicle. During the New Year of 2020, she purchased a 2018 white Porsche 911 Carrera. While growing up in Minnesota, Kristine’s father was an avid Porsche Club member in that area and regularly club raced in at Brainerd International Raceway. Kristine moved to Miami in March of 2020 and joined the Gold Coast Region. One week after Kristine moved to Miami, everything shut down due to COVID 19. This was an unprecedented time of 2020 without the usual traffic, tourists, bikers and pedestrians of Miami Beach. Kristine says that she “Spent time exploring the Miami area by driving around in my new Porsche and exploring.” and “Was able to capture the emptiness of Ocean Drive in Miami Beach.” I like that Kristine took advantage of the city-wide shut down to capture this photo of her Porsche in front of the Leslie Hotel on the unusually empty Ocean Drive. Her choice to use black and white photography is a good portrayal of March 2020.

Kristine took this photograph using a Sony a6000. I really appreciate all the great submissions - please keep them coming!

How to submit a photo for consideration: Submission deadline is the 20th of each month. Please include the following information: name phone number information about your car the title for the photo a short write up about the photo what kind of camera or smart phone you used to capture the image Email the above information with your high resolution image attached to gcr.potm@gmail.com

Calling All PCA Volunteers Paul Raben, Volunteer Co-chair The 48 Hours At Sebring Club race committee has begun making plans for the 2021 race. This year many changes are being made to conform to the COVID-19 guidelines. It is time for all Gold Coast and Suncoast members to start planning how they can get involved. It is your opportunity to give back to your region and be involved with the most successful Club Race in PCA and help raise money for region activities and The Ronald McDonald House charity. Start making plans and reservations to make it a weekend of fun and excitement. Where will you be? What will you be doing? What could you be doing that would possibly equal spending a weekend at world famous Sebring International Raceway with about 500 Porsches? Talk about a car show: this is the largest Porsche only racing event in the world – in fact, it is the largest single marque automobile racing event in the world! How could you miss it, especially when it is almost in your back yard! Last year’s 27th annual event was a great success: we had over 400 participating Porsches. Now, its the time to start planning on how you can assist in this great event. Make hotel reservations for the days you plan to attend. Pick from the available assignments listed below. This is a joint event consisting of friends from Gold Coast Region and Suncoast Region, the 27th edition will be

even bigger and better. The 48 Hours at Sebring has grown into the largest PCA Club Race in the country. We expect to sign up over 400 racers and Advanced Solo drivers in the first two days of registration. This means we will need volunteers to help us run this huge event more than ever. Why should you care? If you are a PCA member that has been standing on the sidelines, wanting to become involved, but unsure of actually attending your first event, this is a perfect opportunity to see what PCA is all about, and meet a group of really nice people! You will be asked to work for a few hours at a job that is actually more fun than work, you get a nice T-Shirt and other benefits that are currently being planned. You also just might meet someone who just won the Daytona 24 Hour race, or past winners of Daytona 24, Sebring 12 Hour or Le Mans 24 Hour, or maybe someone who has won them all. For sure you will not find a better gathering of Porsches and Porsche people anywhere. The Club race raises thousands of dollars for Ronald McDonald House each year and provides the Gold Coast and Suncoast regions funds to support Socials, Drivers Ed and AutoX programs and help local charities. Gold Coast Welcomes the Birth of a New PCA Region

By the time you are reading this, the Gulfstream Region of PCA should be up and running (as much as Covid-19 will allow). After years of tremendous growth in the Gold Coast Region, and the attempts to serve the large membership base and geography of south Florida, the new Region is finally here. The organizers of the Gulfstream Region have been working with the Gold Coast Board for more than a year to establish a territory that would

better serve the members of both regions. As a member of Gold Coast, you’ll have a choice to remain in Gold Coast or move your membership to Gulfstream. For those existing members who live in the new territory of Gulfstream, you’ll be contacted by National PCA about which Region you’d like to be a member of. Then as new members join PCA, they’ll automatically become members of the Region where they live, based on their ZIP code. This territory for Gulfstream is outlined as the counties of Highlands, Martin, Okeechobee, Saint Lucie, and the northern portion of Palm Beach county. The Towns of Boca Raton, Delray Beach, Highland Beach and Gulfstream will remain in Gold Coast Region, along with all of Broward, Dade, and Monroe counties.

While Gulfstream works on its website, newsletter, etc., we will share space in the Kassette and on Gold Coast’s calendar. All members will always be welcome to events in both Regions, so being on the same calendar makes it easier to see what’s being planned. I am honored to have been chosen to be President-Elect of Gulfstream and happy to have an excellent board of creative and enthusiastic people. President-Elect: Jerry Daily Vice President-Elect: Barry Parazio Secretary-Elect: Deborah Rathbun Treasurer-Elect: Nancy Denholm Board Member: Dale Brundige Board Member: Steve Calamusa Board Member: Tim Denholm Board Member: Walt Kamp 1st Alt Board Member: Jamie Marceaux 2nd Alt Board Member: Peter Krones Membership Chair: Anita Wexler Social Chair: Kyle Rathbun

I am looking forward to continuing my long and friendly relationship with all members of Gold Coast and Gulfstream Regions as we move forward to 2021 and beyond. Jerry Daily President-Elect Gulfstream Region PCA
