President’s Corner Dan Doyle - President

Hello, everyone!! On May 5th and 6th we had a DE at Sebring with our friends at PBOC. Also on May 5th we had a Stone Crab Drive to the west coast of Florida. We also had an AutoX on May 13 at the BB&T Center in Sunrise, Florida. All in all it was a pretty busy month for our GCR team. As usual, thanks to you all for all the hard work.

Coming up in June we have several events that should be fun for all. On June 16, Porsche of West Broward tentatively has a Le Mans viewing party scheduled at the dealership. That same day is our Pot Luck Social. On June 23rd is our My Big Fat Greek PCA Lunch. Stay tuned for further details via social media and email! As usual, Porsches & Pancakes is on the first Saturday of the month. Please take

the time to join other Porsche fans and talk about your favorite subjects: your car and Porsche! Also, we have our Thursday Socials on the third Thursday of every month where you can do the same thing! Please check your emails and the calendar on our website for updated times and locations. These socials are a great way to get to know new members and make them feel welcome! Drive safe!

Editor’s Notes

Eurofest continues to be a large success with our members. Peter Olliviere, our Concours Chair along with his team of Gold Coast volunteers provided a venue for some great Porsches along with some very historical and beautiful automobiles. We have several locations to display your car, Porsches by the Bay, PCA Werks Reunion, GCR Picnics, and Eurofest. This event was designed for a central location of the region and expanded beyond Porsches only. The idea worked and attracted a large group of automotive enthusiasts. Check out the 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB4 that was awarded Best in Show. Thank you to all of the photographers that

Roger Fabel- Editor

submitted photos of the event. Many of the photos are displayed in this issue and others will be placed in the gallery on our web site. Just below the New Member Welcome listing we are also welcoming Brenda Gramajo who has been coordinating the Miami social events. Brenda has provided Porsche articles in the past of her overseas trips and we will feature her latest adventure next month. Many of our members did not start off with a Porsche. I build several small motorized carts for use around the neighborhood as a small child, I was in the Soap Box Derby in ‘58 and ‘59 in Fort Lau-

derdale along with some karting days but many years latter after several British cars joined the Porsche family. I think many of us has a similar automotive background. Check out the Tech Corner article by Pedro that goes back into his racing history. If you have an article that you would like to share, please submit by e-mail. This month is the Porsche Parade. Next year at this time we will be hosting Parade in Boca Raton. This is a big honor. We have hosted only once before and co- hosted with Suncoast in 2003. See you at the next event, Roger

Eurofest 2018 The Party Grows Larger by Peter Olliviere, Concours Chair The automotive party that was EUROFEST 2018 was held at Plantation Heritage Park in Plantation, Florida on June 2nd 2018. This was officially the second year that EUROFEST was held, but the first year under the current name. This event was designed from the beginning to be different from the majority of show events that are put on by PCA Regions. After all we are first and foremost a Porsche Club, so that’s where the emphasis is, but I think the reality is that we are all car people with a preference for Porsches. Keeping

10

Die Porsche

that in mind, EUROFEST was open to all makes and all types of cars. With that as the goal, we had a great event! This year EUROFEST mushroomed to twice the size of last year. We had over one hundred and eleven cars registered in the show, and when you added the Porsches & Pancakes participants in general parking, we counted two hundred and two cars in the park. I have no proof, but in the eighteen years I have been a member, I haven’t seen a larger gathering at a Gold Coast Region event. The great

Kassette | July 2018

thing is that this was not a closed event. Plantation Heritage Park is located in the middle of a residential neighborhood, and the event was open to the community, so it drew a large number of non PCA spectators. As an “all makes” welcome event, we attracted an eclectic collection of cars. Participants included 365’s, 914’s, 928’s, 911’s, Turbo’s, GT3’s, GT2’s, and just about every manifestation of Porsche that ever left the factory. But it didn’t end there, a partial list of other cars that

Photos by Dinnis Lai

entered would include a 1933 MG J-2 Midget, 2008 Ford GT, Aston Martin V12 Vantage Roadster, McLaren 720S, Several BMW’s, Hemi Cuda, Maserati Grand Turismo’s, Honda S2000 CR, 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB4, and more. By any stretch of the imagination, the show was spectacular! Our friends at Foreign Affairs lead by Bob and Bobby Varela, put on an awesome display that included both their Unimog “Track Support Vehicle” and the new 911 GT2 RSR. The Tuners Swap Meet was also a big success with a lot of trading and

selling going on. However, we did have some disappointments, the largest concerned Porsches & Pancakes. Unfortunately, we ran out of food. This occurred for a couple of reasons, first among them was member registration. We worked with the caterer to determine how much food would be required. That estimate was based on registration from clubregistration.net and an estimated guess above that. In this case we were victims of our own success, the actual attendance dwarfed the estimates.

The Club apologizes to those that were inconvenienced, and can guarantee it won’t happen next year. I want to take a moment to thank the members that volunteered at EUROFEST, we could not have had such a successful event without you. And lastly I want to thank my wife Laraine that jumped into the deep end by heading up registration. We will continue to build on the success of EUROFEST and can guarantee a bigger and better show for 2019. Keep an eye on this space.

Tech Corner :

Famous American Racecar Driver Article by Pedro P. Bonilla, Tech Editor

Every now and then, instead of technical stuff, I also like writing about personal stories relating to Porsches. This one in particular has just a hint of Porsche content but it mostly relates to my other passions, Formula1, and little karts that go fast and burn gasoline laced with nitro-methane and castor oil, so here it is:

When we arrived you could hardly tell it was a cemetery. It looked more like a park, since you couldn’t see any vertical headstones or monuments. We slowly made our way to the big tree in the center of the concentric rows of tombs, each with a small, discreet plaque on the recently mowed grass. Ayrton Senna’s is very simple and somber.

Back in the last century, in the 1990s, in another life, when I was part of the corporate world, I had to travel constantly. One of those trips took me to Brazil, São Paulo to be more precise. I had been to São Paulo multiple times before but I’d never had any free time to see the sights, since my hectic schedule usually was: overnight flight from the US, go to hotel, shower and change, go to long meeting, then to dinner with business host, back to hotel for a few hours of sleep, early morning visit to the plant, wrap up negotiations, back to airport, evening flight and return home. Repeat next week in another country. On this particular trip we were able to reach our business agreements very quickly and suddenly found ourselves with some free time. My business host asked me if there was anything that I’d like to see or do while in São Paulo and I told him that there were actually two things that I’d love to do. One was to pay my respects to the greatest racecar driver ever, Ayrton Senna, who had died just the year before, and the other one was to visit the Formula 1 track of Interlagos (Autódromo José Carlos Pace). My host, who was an F1 maniac like 99.9% of Brazilians, was all smiles. He told me that it would be a pleasure for him to take me to both places and as an added bonus we would take his beautiful Guards Red 944S (this is the extent of the Porsche content). We chitchatted a little as we made our way to the Morumbi Cemetery in São Paulo which took about 90 minutes, as we fought through the intense traffic of the largest metropolis of the Southern Hemisphere.

The bronze plaque reads: Ayrton Senna da Silva 21-03-1960 01-05-1994 NADA PODE ME SEPARAR DO AMOR DE DEUS. Nothing can separate me from the Love of God. We spent there about a half hour and left without saying a word. It was a moving experience, since Senna had been my all-time favorite racecar driver and I had followed his career very closely. His fatal racing accident was still fresh in my mind since it had happened less than a year before while he was leading the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix at the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari in Imola, Italy. After we left the cemetery we headed south. “Lets go see Autódromo Carlos Pace. It’s only about 10 kilometers” (6 miles) my host said, breaking the silence with a cheerful voice. Indeed it was a quick drive but when we got there the main entrance was closed! We parked to the side and I walked up to the cyclone fence to try to see the cars that were on the track. I couldn’t see the track from there but I could hear the screaming engines of various 4 cylinder powerplants going around the track. My host had walked to the gate, a few yards away and I could see him talking to someone on the other side. After a short time, he waved me over and said: “Get in the car, we’re going in”. I asked him how he had got permission and he said: “Oh, I just told the guard that you were a famous American racecar driver visiting Brazil and that you wanted to see the track”.

Immediately I jumped in the car, the gate opened and we drove in. We made our way to the tunnel and to the infield, then to the pits. What I had been hearing was a foursome of Formula 3 cars that were practicing and were now coming into the garages. We got out of the car and walked all around, looking at the cars, equipment, etc. After about 30 minutes, when we were about to head back to the car, I heard someone call out my name but I didn’t react. Pedro is a common Brazilian name so it must be some other Pedro, I thought. “Pedro!” the voice called out again and this time I turned around. “I knew it was you!” he said. I can’t believe my eyes. There, in front of me was one of my former rivals from my old Karting days. We both had made it twice to the CIK’s (Commission Internationale de Karting) PanAmerican Championship 25 years earlier. In 1970 I had bested him, finishing in 11th and he in 13th place overall, and two years later he bested me by only 1/10th of a second grabbing 10th place and leaving me out of the final runoff championship race. We looked at each other not knowing what the greeting protocol should be. Do I smack him or shake his hand?, I though to myself. We then just hugged and patted each other in the back. Kind of hard if, I remember correctly. He then asked me: “What are you doing here?” I said: “Just looking. I’m in São Paulo till tomorrow and came by to see the track. What about you?” I asked. He said: “I am coaching some young drivers at the Kartódromo Ayrton Senna, over there, next to the track”. Then he said: “You think you still have it in

you?” I answered: “Do you have a helmet for me?” He said: “Let’s go and find out! Follow me in your car”. He hopped into his golf cart and we followed in the car. We made our way out of the infield and onto the circular access road towards the Karting School’s track. There my old friend had his guys quickly prepare two of the training Karts for us and we went at it. We did 8-10 laps passing each other several times. This was a much friendlier battle than our previous encounters and I still remember the feeling to this day. It was just wonderful! … and to top it off it was at Senna’s hometown track, where he had raced his Kart and won many times. We spent another 45 minutes or so there and we were shown around the compound. After being all caught-up, in our lives, we hugged again, promised to keep in touch and I headed back to the car with my business host. When we were in the car, just leaving the track my host turned to me and said: “Wow! I wasn’t lying when I told the guard that you were a famous American racecar driver. Who knew!” For more information on Porsches and more, please visit my website: www PedrosGarage.com. Happy Porsche’ing, Pedro © 2018 Technolab / PedrosGarage.com

Autocross Update

The predicted rains for the day of Autocross event #4 came, but while the course was always wet, we did not get the lot flooding until the last run was completed. Thanks again to the small group of regulars that braved the heavy rain to pick up the cones and pack away the wet equipment. As a reminder, we run our autocross rain or shine, unless there is lightning or other safety issues that preclude operations. The huge plus for this event was the successful kick off of live timing. Simply said this new enhancement allows anyone to see autoX results in real time from their cell phone, just by logging on to the GCR website and tapping the live timing portal. This allows participants to see how they are doing against their competition as each run is completed. A big thanks to Ian, our webmaster, for overcoming our initial technical challenges and getting this working. We still plan to print and post results at the end of each heat and place the final corrected results on the GCR website. While the rain scared off some of our AX regulars, others could not get away due to May 13 being Mother’s Day. The GCR AX team honored all our participating moms and future moms with a breakfast snack, coffee, a souvenir coffee cup and a special flower award for Ladies top time of the day. This year’s mothers day ladies FTD went to Carolyn Ditrichs, who not only beat the other ladies, but also got a better time than her son Damon. In addition to Carolyn and Damon being some of regulars, we also have the father/daughter team of Joaquin and Juliana Samper that not only continue to get better, but continue to take on additional responsibilities with the site set up and tear down. Congratulations to the first-time autocrossers that attended. Some of you may be asking....with the wet surface, who demonstrated the best wet weather skills and had the Top Time of the Day. That answer is easy....Rad Delgado smoked the field by 5 seconds and was fast, smooth and controlled in his new Turbo S. (his wife’s car he says). Rad usually shows up in his GT3 RS and takes FTD, but his driving in the rain was stellar. Wet driving honorable mention goes Ty Gerald for besting the small group of regulars that drive older cars. Ty also helps at the end of the day and is usually there with refreshments for those that help pack up the equipment. While we do some excellent preparations for rain ( wrap photo heads and display light in plastic and shelter the computer and other gear, we anchor down the tents as best as possible) we are looking into a trailer with a concession window to eliminate tents getting blown away and providing a safer haven for our timing equipment....more on this later...enjoy the summer break and see everyone back in Sept. . Here is a listing of our 3 final events for 2018.

Event 5 September 15 (or 9/16 or 9/8) at Sebring on the concrete strip for a fast course on really grippy concrete. I wish more folks would make the trip out to Sebring as this location is similar to an airport site (Buckingham field) and we usually get 10+ runs due to smaller turnouts. Registration should open in July on Clubregistration.net. Event 6 October 13th a Saturday event at BB&T. This will be our 3rd of 4 events at BB&T and our 1st of the fall events at our home lot. This event is typically one of our best attended and participants are advised to register early as we impose a 75 person cap to assure everyone gets maximum runs. Registration is expected to open in August on clubregistration.net Event 7 November 11 a Sunday event at BB&T. This will be our final event of the year and typically our Porsche Ladies go free day. This event typically determines who the class champs for 2018 will be. As always a big thanks to all our regular participants, instructors and team of volunteers that organize, set-up, tear down and do 100’s of behind the scene details that make these events possible. Again... a huge thanks to Rivas Motorsports for allowing us to store the AutoX trailer at their business. Steve and Lynn have offered their site for quite a few years, and this is much appreciated. News, reminders and 2018 updates: • Everyone is now required to pre register for any AutoX on Clubregistration.net… Please consult the GCR website and Kassette for all Autocross photos & results. • Porsche classes are loosely based on the PCR’s for medium size regions, with minor regional adjustments. The major difference will be the addition of SN (stock car/ novice driver) for men and ladies. These classes are strictly for newcomers only. Please see Steve for any car class questions or if you wish to run as a novice. We reserve the right to make additional class/rule changes as needed. • Our 2018 series are planned to be 7 events. To be eligible for an end of the year award, competitors must run in at least 4 events in the same class. Each competitor’s top 4 finishes will be calculated and an end of the year class champion and possibly runner-up (depending on class size) will be chosen. In case of a tie, additional events will be added until the tie is broken. Year-end class champion awards will be presented. • No passengers except for an approved AX instructor driving or in the car instructing. • Questions…..call Steve or Dottie Kidd 954946-3196 • For 2018 our advise is please register early. As a reward, early registrants will see no increase in price, however those registering the last week before the event will see an increase in event registration price. While we typically do not allow on-site registration, if we do, your registration fee will increase to a minimum of $55.The best advise is to register early, as some events do have caps and we charge a premium fee if you register 1 week or less from the event date.
