I offer you my company’s full service
TV & Video production services at a significantly discounted rate. You see, it really is amazing to be a member of a very unique group of men and women who appreciate performance, style and the thrill of managing a sophisticated piece of machinery traveling at the ragged edge on a beautiful road somewhere in the world! Moreover, to the uninitiated, words do not communicate the feeling you get when the outline of the oncoming car becomes obvious, lights flash, heads nod as a brother or sister go screaming past. I
have had the distinct pleasure of enjoying thousands of those sweet moments as the very proud owner of a 1969, 912 ... that I purchased (as a very young guy) in 1970! Yes, I owned my 912 for over 46 years and YES, if that car could talk ... Through many years of SCCA/IMSA racing and thrashing my street 912 in every conceivable manner my love for our pedigree has only grown stronger and deeper. I appreciate excellence, performance and balls-to-the-wall fun, which is one of the reasons I have been
involved in a multi-year complete restoration of the 912 with the great folks at Foreign Affairs Motorsport. If you have any TV or video needs, please contact me to discuss your project. My company can produce anything from a 30 second commercial to a Web promotion to a full-blown two-hour documentary. We have our own independent studio in Lake Worth, Florida with a soundstage and complete green screen chroma-key facility that enables live studio programs we can broadcast anywhere in the world.
Bottom Line: My team and I promise you the same performance that we owners expect from our personal Poorsh ... oops, I mean from our beloved PORSCHE!!

Hello, July! But let’s not forget June! The month of June was no slouch when it came to GCR events. As usual, the GCR team put on a fantastic Autocross on June 10th. As if that wasn’t enough, later that day we all met at the Spangler home for the Pot Luck social. For the second year in a row, Frank provided musical entertainment for the social which was second to none! On June 17-18, we were able to get our endurance racing fix in at Porsche of West Broward at their Le Mans viewing party. To finish off the month, we all ate too much at the My Big Fat Greek PCA Lunch. My personal thanks (again!) to everyone that helped to put on all of the June events. GCR would not be what it is without you.
As is typical, we are starting to hit the summer doldrums. It’s hot, muggy, and no one wants to leave the house with its lifegiving air conditioning. That being said, we still have a number of Porsche-related events lined up for July which will require you to leave the house and perhaps even the state! From July 9-15, Porsche Parade will be taking over Spokane, Washington. Parade is the annual national convention for Porsche Club of America. Club members from all over North America come together to participate in a week of fun-filled events with and without their cars and to socialize with other members. If you can attend, you should! Later in the month (July 29) is the Larry Wilson Collection tour. If you want to see some
amazing vehicles, don’t miss it! As usual, Porsches & Pancakes is on the first Saturday of the month. Please take some time to join other Porsche fans and talk about your favorite subjects: your car and Porsche! Also, we have our Thursday Socials on the third Thursday of every month where you can do the same thing! Please check your emails and the calendar on our website for updated times and locations. I encourage all of you to reach out to new members at each of these functions and make them feel welcome! Hope to see you all soon!

Editor’s Notes I would like to welcome a new local company that we have worked with for years on a national PCA level. Wine Country Motor Sports is located in Jupiter. They supply safety equipment for all of your PCA DE or racing needs. You have probably met them at the track but in the near future we will be holding an event at their Jupiter location. As with all of our sponsors, please stop by and thank them for their support. In many organizations, events slow down in the summer months, not PCA. Check out the Zonefest 2017 article. Zonefest is a great event to meet and compete with members from other regions. Zonefest is also a good warm up for the national Porsche Parade held early this month in Spokane, WA. For those of you
Roger Fabel- Editor
who attend, please send your photos and stories so we can share them with the members. One of the big events in our region this past month was the 2nd Annual Jazz/Blues Pot Luck social. We are very lucky to have Frank Spangler who is a Grammy Award winning musician who planned and hosted the event with his wife Christy. Frank organized the event around local and national talent. To enjoy the talent of eight great musicians you would have to go to a large concert hall. Frank presented over three hours of professional entertainment in his home. To provide the food, social chair Christy Brignan coordinated our PCA members to bring their special dishes and I must say this was the best selection of food that I

have seen in 16 years as a PCA member. Thank you to all of the members that helped to make the event such a success. Next years event is already being planned. If you were unable to attend, we have a photo layout in this issue along with videos of each performer on the GCR web site. Later this month we will be joining other regions in zone 12 to attend the Larry Wilson collection and having lunch at Orbits Racing along with a tour of their shop. This event may fill up quickly so sign up early. I always welcome articles and photographs for our newsletter. Please contact me if you would like to submit an article and I will provide you with the details.

Zonefest 2017... a brief recap by Steve Kidd, Zone , 12 representative
For those of you that have never heard of Zonefest, it’s Zones 12’s multi region, multi activity event held over the Memorial day weekend. …..kind of like a mini Porsche Parade. The idea is that each year Zonefest is hosted by a different region in the Zone and members can experience the hospitality and flavor each region has to offer. For 2017, Zone 12 Rep Steve Kidd convinced everyone that Zonefest should relocate to one of the northern most regions ….and North Florida Region accepted the challenge and Zonefest 2017 was moved to the Florida capital city....Tallahassee. North Florida Region President Robert Wilson assembled a team of superstars that put together one of the best Zonefests ever. In typical fashion, the weekend started on Friday afternoon with registration, socializing, concours prep and classes for newcomers about the upcoming competitive events. One of the unique qualities of Zonefest is that the host region recruits other regions in Zone 12 to chair the competitive activities. In true form, Saturday morning started off with a concours hosted by Gold Coast Region (Fred Kohly Chair), followed by
a gimmick rally hosted by North Florida Region (Don Boggs Chair) and the final competitive event of the day was a tech quiz hosted by Space Coast region (Steve Hoffman chair ) with the final activity being a social and awards party at one of Tallahassee’s most historic pubs. Sunday started off with a challenging auto cross hosted by Sonnenschein Region ( Wally Lindenmuth chair). Wally and Steve Kidd saw to it that autoX new comers received great instruction and improved every run. After lunch, most of the 75 registrants participated in a canopy tour thru rural Leon County , led by Tim and Shirley Kerns from North Florida region. The final event of the weekend was the awards banquet where the concluding round of trophies, door prizes and recognition’s were presented. If you missed the event, but want to see great pictures of all the activities and results from the competitive events visit the zone 12 or North Florida region website and catch all the action. Again, thanks to all the sponsors, program advertiser and staff from many regions that made this event possible. Special thanks to Dottie Kidd who as last years Zonefest chair, provided
hours or guidance support and mentoring to the North Florida team....in fact we put together a script for success as a model for doing multi region events that North Florida region not only followed but made better! Also of note was Lucy Kohly who supported Fred and grabbed to Mic and gave a gave a heart warming story of their ties to Florida State and the Tallahassee area. Likewise from Gold Coast region were Carolyn Dietrich and Bjorn Borg with ties to the area If you didn’t make Zonefest in 2017 we hope you make it next year... It’s a family event with not only competitive activities, but also socializing, tours, plus great food and beverage We have not finalized a Zonefest site for 2018, however please mark your calendar now. Where ever it is.... it will be fun, Porsche filled and much less expensive than a Porsche Parade. On a final note, enjoy a few of the following pictures, however for the complete story, go to the Zone12 website for all the pictures and see how Goldcoast region members did against the competition.
1. Concours under a Tallahassee canopy 2. Alan Berg (North Florida region/ Zonefest Program Editor) Steve Kidd (Zone 12 representative) and Steve Hoffman (PCA National tech chair) were Concours judges 3. Fred and Lucy Kohly share their Tallahassee connection 4. Ladies tech champs Dottie Kidd 1st Place 5. Men’s tech Quiz winners...Steve was 1st overall 6. Touring one of Tallahassee’s canopy roads 7. Steve not only won his AX class, but also FTD....in Dotties 944....Dottie won her ladies class 8. Carolyn and Bjorn won door prize certificates for Autox and DE

azz/Blues Preparing for the Event When Mother Nature seems to be Working Against You Another life lesson in the works. Frank and I took the week off so we could turn our full attention on preparing the house for our guests. On Saturday, we began work outside of the house which was cut short due to the rain, so we turned our attention to working indoors. Sunday, we attempted to continue work outside which was also rained out. Monday and Tuesday more and more rain fell. The indoors were pretty well ready to go by Tuesday afternoon then that night, a crash! We are not real sure what happened, but one of our screen beams collapsed. We began wondering if Mother Nature was going to give us a break! On Wednesday, still more rain. The intersection we live on was completely under water. We were quite concerned about how this event would happen if our house was surrounded by a moat. There is no way anyone would want to drive and park their Porsche in this amount of water! On Thursday, there was a break from the rain and the water in our intersection began to recede. We were woken up early in the morning by our screen guy working in our patio- he had it back to new before noon. Even though we hired a landscaper,
we were not sure if the weather would hold out and if they would be able to make it before Saturday so Frank took care of the lawn. The email about the Autocross being postponed came out and then the social coordinator, Christy Brigman, emailed asking about if we need to cancel, or what about the rain. All the musicians were confirmed so I said that we are good to go no matter what. By Thursday night, we relaxed and said it is what it is and if only five or 100 people show up we will have a good time no matter what! Friday, there was little rain, and the water in our intersection continued to recede. The landscaper showed up that morning and took care of the rest of the lawn maintenance. Things were coming together. By Friday evening, the water was mostly dried up from the street and swale. Our wonderful next-door neighbor assisted us by bailing the rest of the water from the driveway. We were hoping the rain would continue to hold off so there would not be any more flooding. Mid Saturday morning, the volunteer crew came over to help with the set up. We had this one looming cloud all day that taunted us with thunder and off and on sprinkles. Fortunately, it stayed dry most
by Christy and Frank Spangler
of the day. The musicians came over that afternoon for the equipment set up, and with the help of the volunteer crew, we finished setting up the outdoors. What was our life lesson? Well, throughout the week of battling Mother Nature and wondering what she had in store for us on Saturday, everything came together in the end for a wonderful evening and a memorable story. Members came from all over South Florida from Miami to Jupiter. New members, long time members and transplant members. Even though we had that one looming cloud, members were out on the patio enjoying themselves in spite of the few sprinkles. Frank and I realized that we are all Floridians, we can do the rain and GCR PCA members are a great group of people who enjoy each other’s company in spite of the weather. It was great to see so many members in attendance, braving the weather, enjoying the awesome food, each other’s company, and music. We enjoyed hosting all of you once again. On Sunday, we were rewarded with a relaxing, warm, sunny South Florida day. We would like to thank the volunteers that help with the set up and clean up – Christy & Jeff Brigman, Jeff Smith, Dale Huber, Ian Gerada and his Lee. Finally, we would like to give a big thank you to the musicians, Niles Blaze, Robbie Alter, Jessie Campo, Troy Turner, Frank Spangler, Mike Ancona and Rich Corricelli.

Autocross Update
by Steve Kidd, Autocross Chair
By the time you read this GCR AX event # 4 will hopefully be history with results posted on the GCR website. I say hopefully because our 6/10 event was rescheduled due to flooding at BBT center, which also closed nearby Sawgrass Mills Mall for 3 days as their parking lot was transformed into a lake! Just a little history....I don’t recall ever having the site management canceling an AutoX due to rain or a flooded lot in all the 14+ years we have chaired the AX program. I can remember instances where heavy rain occurred during an event and we had to stop the event until the rain let up, and on the rare occasion we have had to stop running because the timing equipment was in danger. So what happens when it rains at an AutoX? First of all safety is the top priority, and if there is lightning in the area, we stop the event until the lightning danger has passed. Next, we look at how much water is coming down and is on the ground. We’ll temporarily stop an event if driving is not safe or the timing equipment is in harm’s way....however, in most cases a light sprinkle will not stop the event. The timing console, computer and printer stay under a tent and the timing photo heads get plastic bags which keeps the event running. Course workers are advised to take rain gear out with them and keep the radios dry. Drivers are advised to be extra careful, and in some cases we limit the course to 1 car at a time. Just like driving in the rain on the street, driving in the rain at an autoX calls for heightened level of awareness, and knowing that the level of grip is nowhere the level you have in the dry. Also your tire condition is much more important in the wet and slick/ race tires just don’t work. If you are scheduled to work the course and rain is coming, protect your belongings that you have taken out of your car and be aware that items can and do float away if not secured. Finally ….plan for bad weather with a rain coat or poncho, umbrella and even water shoes......Yes one of the best $5.00 I spent was on Walmart cheapo water shoes. If rain is coming, you will see Dottie and I put on our water shoes (hot pink was the only color they had) and that way we keep our regular shoes and socks dry.

On other AutoX news fronts, Multi regional PCA events are always fun and challenging and this year’s Zonefest AutoX was no different. North Florida region secured a hospital parking lot and Sonnenschien Region provided the timing equipment and course design. Just about every type of Porsche was there competing, from a 1965 911 to 2016 991, and everything in-between including some Cayennes and Macans, and of course our trusty 944 S2 representing the transaxle component. Want to see how team Gold Coast did?.....Check out the results on the Zone 12 website, along with lots of really great photos of the autocross and other Zonefest activities. The grand daddy of PCA Autocrosses, (at the Parade in Spokane ) is coming up in July...This is an opportunity to see who the best of the best really are within PCA Here’s our final schedule for the balance of 2017, which is subject to change: ********************************* ********************************** ********************************** *********************** #5 Saturday Sept 16th…We’re back at Sebring for fall opener…Should be similar to the Feb. 25th event #6 Saturday October 14th @BBT ...historically one of our best attended events of the year #7 Sunday November 12 @BBT Our final event of the year and our typical PCA Ladies go free day Also plan on attending the Oktoberfast Zone challenge AutoX October 28 + 1 more Zone Challenge event.
July 2017
News, reminders and 2017 updates: • Everyone is now required to pre register for any AutoX on Clubregistration.net… Please consult the GCR or Zone 12 website and Kassette for all Autocross photos & results. • Porsche classes are loosely based on the PCR’s for medium size regions, with minor regional adjustments. The major difference will be the addition of SN (stock car/novice driver) for men and ladies. These classes are strictly for newcomers only. Please see Steve for any car class questions or if you wish to run as a novice. We reserve the right to make additional class/rule changes as needed. • Our 2017 series are planned to be 7 events. To be eligible for an end of the year award, competitors must run in at least 4 events in the same class. Each competitor’s top 4 finishes will be calculated and an end of the year class champion and possibly runner-up (depending on class size) will be chosen. In case of a tie, additional events will be added until the tie is broken. Year-end class champion awards will be presented. • No passengers except for an approved AX instructor driving or in the car instructing. • Questions…..call Steve or Dottie Kidd 954-946-3196 • GCR members should try PCA AutoX events hosted by other regions. Last year Dottie and I attended AutoX events hosted by Suncoast, Everglades, Citrus, Sonnenschein and Peachstate regions. This year Florida Crown and Spacecoast regions both have new AX programs with events posted on the Zone 12 calendar. Join us for a “road trip” up the coast....meet new friends and course challenges.
Autocross Basics Part l Autocross is a sport of trying to navigate your car through a defined course of pylons usually on a large parking lot, faster than your competition. Autocross courses are set up using soft orange traffic pylons which will not damage your car, but they do melt!!! Events are run at speeds usually between 40-65 MPH, usually in 2nd gear. Autocross is a “performance driving event” and a safe way to learn how to drive your car at its limit. You not only learn how to handle your car at speeds that you drive daily, but you also:

If you have an older Porsche a 356C in my case, and you are not the original owner, learning the history of the car can be a challenge. Let’s start at the beginning, I purchased the car from my brother-in-law after it had sat in a warehouse for many years. Being inside for that length of time in Michigan thankfully saved it from the elements. I brought the car to Florida to rescue it bring it back to life. Fast forward 30 something years and my curiosity finally got the better of me and I decided it was time to learn the history of the car. There was only one clue to the history of the car which was a “south bend region solo II 1979” decal on the window behind the driver side door. As my brotherin-law had no clue as the lineage my first step was to get a certificate of authenticity which would at least tell me how the car was delivered to the yet unknown original owner. After a few weeks I received the COA arrived along with an unhappy revelation. According to the COA the engine and trans were not the original power train from the factory. My happiness dropped along with the value of the car, but all was not lost. I still had a very nice 356C that was fun to drive and looked really great, so who cares I’m not selling the car. Once I received the COA I proceeded to replace all the items that were apparently missing and lost from the car. These were chrome wheels, leather luggage straps, head rests, chrome horn ring and coco mats. So naturally I found and purchased these items so my 356C was “how it was

delivered”. Let’s fast forward again. A friend of mine and fellow 356 owner whose name is Mr. X casually brought up the fact that I should get a Kardex as it is the build sheet from the factory. The reason this was discussed was not only was the engine and trans wrong the color on the COA did not match the paint code on the plate in the car. So Mr. X “knows a guy” that can get a Kardex for the car and because this is a clandestine operation all identities have been protected. So after paying the required fee I receive the a for mentioned Kardex and lo and behold the engine, trans and paint numbers match the car. What doesn’t match now is all the other options that don’t belong on the car!
Shortly after receiving the Kardex Peggy and I are at the Werks Reunion at Amelia Island and I see there is a Porsche of America booth with three different counters where you can speak with people from Porsche about your cars. I go up to the desk to speak to the customer relations person and explain how my COA does not match my Kardex, first question from him is “how did you get a Kardex?” Answer: top secret, meaning none of your business. Well I proceed to tell him my tale of discovery and he orders me a new COA. I receive the new COA 3 weeks later and sure enough it matches the Kardex. But at least everything outside of

the things I added, it is a numbers matching car! The best thing about the Kardex is the original owner took delivery from the factory in 1964 which means I now have his name and where he lived! The car went to of all places Fox Point, Wisconsin which is North of Chicago right on Lake Michigan. This might explain why it was ordered with a removable hardtop. If you know anything about Wisconsin Winter and cold weather is pretty much most of the year. So I now know the owners name and location and he was obviously an enthusiastic Porsche person to go to Germany take delivery drive it around and ship it home. So I thought why don’t I Google this person see if anyone of his family is still alive and maybe contact them and tell them I have your Dad’s car. Amazingly his picture popped up as he was a legislator in Wisconsin and the photo is from an event that he attended way back when. Unfortunately not one of his offspring are still alive, but just to be able to trace the family tree of the car was exciting enough. So now after 35+ years I have a bits and pieces of the history of the car, I have two different COA’s, a Kardex and a picture of the original owner. I don’t know how the car made it to Michigan, but who cares I love my 356 and will never sell it so the car and story is mine and maybe I might even be buried in it so no one else can have her!

Tech Corner :
The Boxster Story (part 3) Article by Pedro P. Bonilla, Tech Editor
The Third generation Boxster appeared at the 2012 Geneva Auto Show as model year 2013 and was a new car altogether. This new generation offered a 40% stiffer chassis, wider front and rear tracks, longer wheelbase and a modest weight reduction, coupled with a new exterior look with bolder design and bigger air intakes which made it more aggressive looking. It was given the official designation “981” and kept the normally aspirated, flat six, 91A-type engines in 2.7 (down from 2.9) and 3.4 Liter displacements from the 987.2 cars. Again, as is customary, Porsche upped the ante by offering 261
and 315 HP respectively for the base and S models. The MSRPs were: $49,500 and $60,900 respectively. Both versions could be ordered with a manual 6 speed or an automated manual double-clutch 7 speed (PDK) transmission. This 2nd. generation PDK was much “smarter” than the previous and is a joy to drive on the streets or on the track.
32
Die Porsche
Not only is the car quicker because of the PDK transmission, but some of the factory options, such as Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV) and the Sport Chrono Package that now included active transmission mounts, made the car much quicker than the manual 6 speed to the tune of 0.3 seconds in a 0 to 62 mph run. The Boxster 981 was offered on a brand new chassis which was 40% more torsionally rigid, with a wider front track (wider by 40 mm), a wider rear track ( by 18 mm), a longer wheelbase (by 60 mm), and Porsche managed to also make them lighter by about 75 lbs. when compared with the 987.2. The reworked engine packages also offer more power and were more fuel efficient
than their predecessors. For model year 2013 the Boxster S was offered with 311 HP and then bumped to 326 HP for model year 2014. MSRPs were $50,400 for the base and $60,900 for the S models respectively. For 2014 Porsche did not make any big changes in the Boxster lineup except for a few new color options and a bit more HP due to tuning.
Kassette |
July 2017
MSRPs were $50,450 (265 HP) and $62,100 (315 HP). The BIG news of 2014 was the offering of the much anticipated Cayman GT4 following with the 2015 Boxster Spyder. These versions came with the normally
aspirated, flat-six, 3.8 L engines found in the Carrera S models, making 385 HP. Both models offered specially tuned suspensions with the front components coming straight off the Carrera GT3. But all the hype in 2014 and 2015 would change to mixed emotions for the diehard Porsche mid-engine lovers. In 2016 Porsche announced changes to the lineup: 1.- Starting with model year 2017 the model designations would change from the 981 to the 718. 2.- The Cayman would now have a lower MSRP than the Boxster and 3.- The Boxster and the Cayman would be offered with Turbocharged flat-four engines, instead of the normally aspirated flat-six that had been in use since the inception of the Boxster 20 years prior in1997. (next page) The factory promoted that the 718 model cars would make more torque and HP and would be better all-around cars but when the first ones we tested by motorsports journalists and then by the general public, the BIG and almost unanimous complaint was the engine sound The powerful and intoxicating engine growl to which we had all become accustomed and drawn to when the right pedal was put to the floor now became the put-put sound of a Subaru. Very disappointing! Add to that the fact that you can feel the turbo lag from the base Boxster’s 2.0L (300 HP) powerplant.
The “S” sports a 2.5L (350 HP) engine and although there is no discernible turbo lag, the Subi sound comes through loud and clear. The MSRP for the 718 Boxster was $57,400 and for the “S” it was $69,800. Sales of both the Boxster and Cayman platforms plummeted.
As an enthusiast and owner of a midengined Porsches I sure hope this is not a trend that terminates production of the platforms. I would love to be able to see the 2037 version of the Boxster celebrate 40 years of production!

Ken’s Corner: What makes a Porsche a Porsche Reprinted from:The Yellowstone Region (Old Faithful Newsletter) What makes a Porsche a Porsche? That little question can conjure up all sorts of opinions from people who love Porsches. We have all read comments in magazines and have heard them in discussions many times before; that the last true 911 built, ended when Porsche switched from the air (oil) cooling to water cooling. That any water cooled car can not possibly be a Porsche. That 914’s and 924’s were just impostures. That Porsches are too heavy. That a real Porsche can only be a two seat sports car. That real Porsches have to be built in Stuttgart. Then came the Cayenne! Holy Moly, an SUV! Surely the Cayenne can’t be a Porsche! What’s next, a Sedan? (We’ll save that one until 2009 with the Panamera). Well, let us look at each one of these statements to see if any of them really hold up to the historical facts. The last true Porsche was air (oil) cooled. Sure the 550, 917, 906, 356, 904 and many other air cooled Porsches were wonderful cars. But that statement would mean that the 959’s, 962’s, 996RSR’s and GT1’s, all of which had some form of water cooling, could not be true Porsches. But each of those cars were not only good cars; they were iconic Porsches. Don’t forget, it wasn’t Porsche who ended the era of the air (oil) cooled engine. It was emission control, noise regulations (cooling fan related) and just managing the heat from higher and higher horse power engines. So how could being air (oil) cooled, be the only criteria that makes a Porsche a Porsche? The 914’s and 924’s were impostures. Sure, these cars did use some non Porsche parts. And they were supposed to be VW’s or Audi’s from the onset. But these cars were designed by Porsche for a low cost entry into the sports cars arena.
36
Die Porsche
Porsche saw their potential, and after VW and Audi passed on building them, Porsche kept them for their own. As far as their performance on autocross or race tracks go, they do extremely well. If you ever happen to see a 914-6 on a track, you will come away with a new opinion of how fast and well mannered these cars can be. Porsche’s are too heavy! Every car manufacturer is saddled with the same government regulations. And every manufacturer fights to avoid an increase in weight from year to year. Most Porsches now have six airbags, eight in the Cayenne, a side impact bar, roll over bars, six computers, crash zones, ABS, ASR, ABD, PASM, PSM, PCB, PCM, Variable Valve and Variable Ram Air Runners just to mention a few of the features that are packed into each car. All of these features are added for safety, performance or fuel economy reasons and they have one thing in common; each one adds just a little more weight to the vehicle. Even by going to exotic materials like carbon fiber, it is difficult to get the cars weight much below 3,000 lbs. Unfortunately; the days of the safe 2,000 lb car are over. However, if you judge the cars on their performance, then the new cars look pretty good. Every new model is designed to out accelerate, out brake and out corner their predecessors. Porsche has to be doing something right to make this happen. The statement that a Porsche has to be a two seat Sports Car is just crazy. Don’t those people ever look behind their own 911 sports seats to notice that there are two seats directly behind them? According to Porsche sales, it still appears that the 911 is still a fairly sought after Sports Car. Their assembly line runs two shifts per day, and if you want to order

a new 911, you will be waiting twelve months for delivery. Pretty good for a sports car after more than forty years of production and four seats. To be a real Porsche, the car has to be made in Stuttgart. Well, from the beginning, Porsches haven’t always been made in Stuttgart or in Germany or even by Porsche. Gmund, Austria was the location of the first 356 production before moving to Stuttgart. I don’t think many would consider these cars to not qualify as Porsches. Then came the 924-944’s. These cars were produced by Audi about 50 miles north of Stuttgart. Only the last of the 944’s were actually produced in Stuttgart. Today, the majority of Boxsters and Caymans are made in Finland. Their build quality is at least as good as the ones being produced in Stuttgart. When someone buys a used Boxster, they do not check the VIN # to see if it has an S for Stuttgart or a U for Uusikaupunki and then discount the price accordingly. No, they look for the Porsche Crest, and that is enough to verify the authenticity. Saving the best for last, the heresy of all heresies, a four wheel drive SUV! Ugg; the Cayenne! Well, think back a few years ago to an event called the Paris-Dakar Rally, that Porsche won twice. Porsche used a vehicle that could leap sand dunes because of its high ground clearance. It could withstand the extreme desert heat because of water cooling. It could churn through the desert sand with its four wheel drive. Gee, that vehicle sounds very much like the current Cayenne, but in reality it was the predecessor to the exotic 959. Or just maybe, it was the predecessor to the Cayenne. Porsche was as usual, just ahead of its time.
What then, really is a Porsche? Is it a vehicle that is engineered by Porsche, or assembled by Porsche, or have the engine built by Porsche? Or, does it need the Porsche “look” and quality? Or maybe, it has to have a sufficiently high level of performance? Well, the answer is rather simple; a real Porsche carries the Porsche Crest and the acceptance of its customers (us). Porsche understands it must do certain things to maintain its image. *First and foremost Porsche knows it needs to stay profitable to invest in new vehicles, and to continue to build the quality cars we expect of them. Porsche, by the way, has been the most profitable car company in the world for the past seven years.
*They need to continue to build the best performing cars in their class. Just look at the current models of the Boxster, Cayman, 911, Cayenne and Carrera GT. All of them represent the top level of performance and quality in their respective class. *Porsche must use premium materials in their vehicles and produce vehicles that are trouble free with low maintenance costs. Porsche is doing this by going to better quality materials inside the new Boxster and 911’s models. They also are increasing service intervals to save on maintenance costs. *Lastly, Porsche needs to stay true to their roots by continuing to produce excellent Road Cars. Historically Porsche has built Road Cars, modified their cars

for racing, sold them to customers and then let those racing results help to sell more Road Cars. This has always been the Porsche Mantra, and from the sounds of things in Stuttgart, I’m sure this will continue into the future. So what really does make a Porsche a Porsche? That decision, I will leave up to you. Everyone will have their own personal favorites and maybe even models they dislike. For me, it’s the sound, the touch, the shape, and the feeling I get when I am close to one. Any one! It really doesn’t matter what model it is, because they are still all members of an exclusive family. And wouldn’t life be just a little bit boring, if every member of its family was the same.
