President’s Corner It has been six months since the Gold Coast Region was reorganized, giving birth to the Gulf Stream Region. By no means was it a simple or easy event. Prior to it becoming official, there was much discussion amongst the Board of Directors as to whether this was a good idea, or something that would hurt the Region. The primary problem driving the reorganization question was: Is Gold Coast adequately serving the Northern section of our territory? Can we service a region that is as diverse as Gold Coast that covers Miami-Dade, Monroe, Broward and Palm Beach counties? The opinion of some was that we were doing a great job and that things do not need to change, and if we were to make changes, they should be minimal and not create a new region. On the other hand, the opposing opinion was more along the lines that Palm Beach was being underserved, and if Gold Coast divested itself of that northern part of the region, we could be more focused on Monroe, Miami-Dade and Broward. Not mentioned very much, but what I feel was a large percentage of the push for reorganization. was the desire for “selfdetermination.” People want to feel that they are responsible for their own destiny and members in the Palm Beaches are no different. Well, six months have passed since Gulfstream was created. Gold Coast allocated the territory that was agreed upon, and “seed money” was awarded to finance Gulf Stream’s initial operations. As of this date Gulf Stream has over 200 members and growing. It was the opinion of some that Gold Coast would lose as many as 1,000 members and be hurt financially. Well, as we look back on it today, Gold Coast has more members now than it did before the reorganization. The evidence suggests that the reorganization has been a good thing for both regions and for PCA. Looking at the upcoming Calendar for the months of June and July, (except for Parade on July 11th to the 17th) things are quiet. If you can get the time, you should really try to attend Parade in French Lick, Indiana: it is truly an exceptional experience for any Porsche-loving person.
In August on the 21st and 22nd is The Escape to Cape Coral will take place. If you have never attended an overnight event with the Club this is your chance. Great location, great food, great company and great cars. What more could you want?! As I usually do, I will be stretching the event a little for myself by going over on Friday, meeting the group for lunch on Saturday, and staying until Monday. After the Escape things will begin to pick up as we move into late summer, fall, and the holiday season. We have several charity events that we must address, as well as the Holiday Party that needs to be planned. We also have a DE event at Palm Beach International Raceway coming up in October. This will be the first DE event held with Gulf Stream and should be the first of many to come as we ramp up those DE programs. The last item I have on my list is a

plea to you, the membership. It takes a tremendous amount of effort on the part of several people to produce the magazine that you are now reading. The difficult part is not putting it together, it is getting the content, the articles that you the readers find interesting. If we do not have content, we have nothing. So, we are asking you, the members, to consider writing an article and submitting it for publication. The Kassette is only as good as the people who contribute to its content. We need you to be that interesting person who has something to share. I know the standard excuse: “I am not a writer.” This does not matter; we can help you! You come up with the idea and we will help you get it done. We want to hear what you have to say!

Editor’s Notes This month we are introducing a new
feature that has attracted much attention from our members, Pets and Porsches. Several members provided photos and stories about their furry companions. I hope you enjoy this great article about one dozen of our GCR members and their pets. We are always looking for different articles to provide our readers and I think Christy came up with a winner that you will be seeing more in the future. If you have ideas for future articles please send them to the editor. Pedro our world class tech writer is always looking for tech article ideas so please e-mail him with your ideas. I would like to welcome fellow GCR member Adam Weiss to our list of active supporters. Adam’s business is located in Boca Raton and his ad is on page 15.
Roger Fabel, Editor
Please support our sponsors; with their support we are able to provide a full color printed monthly Kassette magazine. I am very thankful for the talented hard working staff writers that have joined us to raise the bar of our publication. As a side note, one of my assignments is to judge newsletters from other regions that are not in our class. We are in the largest class so I am assigned to judge the two classes below ours. The content in those I judge is very good but must admit that our staff writers are the very best. I have also been told by other editors that they wish they had the excellent advertisers that we have. Mark Johnson, who writes our monthly Member Profile article has provided us with a very special father son article. Great salute to all of the Porsche Dad’s who encourage their children to get involved in
the best car club in the world. For those of you that were not able to attend the Works Reunion, we will feature an article and photos next month. Make sure you are booked for the Escape to the Cape weekend trip. We do many driving events but this format will provide extra time to spend with fellow club members. Suncoast members have also been invited along with our vendors, so book now for a great weekend adventure. More details on page 14. Check out the Autocross Update on page 28. Steve and Dottie along with the teams from other zone 12 regions enjoyed a great event at Sebring. Enjoy your summer and send us those Porsche adventure stories,

Featuring Gold Coast Region Members and Their Furry Companions by Christy Spangler
Rex is Teresa’s first dog; she says, “We just love him and can’t wait to go on more adventures”.
Occasionally my dog, Titan will accompany me to GCR events. Traveling with your pet can be fun, and sometimes challenging. For example, Titan is a 65-lb Amstaff mix who can have trouble getting comfortable in the front seat of the Porsche. In my 996, he will hit the center console window rockers, rolling the windows up and down as he tries to get settled. In my 944, he will often rest his paws and head in the way of the shifter. Come to find out, many Gold Coast Region members also enjoy bringing their furry family member along to GCR events. I reached out to find members interested in participating in this feature to find out more about their experiences traveling with their pet and Porsche. Meet some of the GCR members and their furry riding companions:
Dylan & Laura Troiano with Walter, their Shih Tzu Poodle; they purchased their 2009 997.2 C2, named “Penny,” at the beginning of the lockdown, and say that it is one of the best decisions they ever made. They joined the PCA GCR last June. Dylan says that Walter can be a pain waking them up every day at 5 a.m. for meals but at 13 years old, he has the energy of a newborn. They have no idea where that energy comes from. Walter has no issues on road trips with Penny, who sleeps most of the time during the drive.

Meet Speedster, Pamela & Howard Behar’s Mini Golden doodle. The Behars own a 1965 356c Cabriolet, a 2018 991.2 GT3, and a 2013 Cayenne GTS. Pamela says that Speedster has attended more Porsche events than most people they know—maybe it has something to do with his name. The biggest challenge with Speedster is his size. He loves to go for rides and hang out at Cars & Coffee and car shows but he has quickly outgrown 2 of their 3 cars. He missed DRT this year because he just doesn’t fit in the 356 anymore. Speedster and “Penelope,” the 356, can be followed @356.momma on Instagram.
Sir Titus Rex—”Rex” for short—is Teresa Ashburn’s Brussels Griffon who loves to go everywhere with Teresa in her 2021 Taycan 4s. Rex has his own car seat that he rides in on the back passenger side. Teresa says that Rex will command her to roll down the window by tap-tapping on the windowsill. When they pull up to a traffic light the car always turns heads but when Teresa rolls the window down and Rex looks out, she says that the reaction is priceless! His little face just makes anyone smile. Teresa says that Rex is a great traveler who started flying with her when he was very young, so going places in the car is easy. With the Taycan, she can keep the air on, so a quick stop for an errand is easy. No worries about the car getting hot.

Khloe is a toy Yorkshire Terrier who loves joining Kristine Olson in her 2018 911 for car rides around Miami with the windows down, sunroof open and basking in the sun. Kristine says that Khloe has made quite the adjustment from being born in cold Minnesota, to navigating the streets of Manhattan to loving life in sunny FL at 13 years old. Khloe rides in her bed in the passenger seat and on long trips around Florida she settles in and is happy being a co-pilot. Around Miami she jumps on Kristine’s lap and insists on being in the driver’s seat.
Kevin and Heidi Hill have two French Bulldogs and one FrenchBo that not only love to go for rides, but also like to help in the garage. The Hills have four Porsches, including a 2014 GT3, a 2015 GTS, a 2018 Macan, and a 1983 911SC (pictured) that they are restoring. Kevin says that every time he heads out to the garage to do something, he has some “helpers.” Meet Kevin’s helpers: Ollie in the foreground,
Mackie, and Rouzzie, who is wondering where she will fit. Kevin says that it usually ends up with Ollie sitting on Mackie so he can see out of the window. Heidi says that since they are a four-Porsche family, they may need a fourth dog.
Nino is Joe Carballosa’s Chocolate Labrador who loves riding in the 2013 Boxster S. Joe says that Nino especially loves the fresh air and all the good smells that the open top allows him to enjoy. Nino knows that Joe is very particular about his Porsche so he is very careful to sit like a person and keep his paws off the center console. Joe says that he loves his Porsche but he ADORES his dog! Joe’s girlfriend, Linda Perry, is pictured here with Nino in the Boxster S.
Noemi Sanchez says that Sophia, the Yorkie, and Daisy, the mini Golden Doodle, love to be picked up from the groomers in the Porsche. They know how to spot the bright yellow car and patiently wait for Daddy (Nestor) to open the door to jump in! Noemi says that riding with the convertible open is definitely a challenge. While Daisy loves it, Sophia gets very nervous, so they ride with the top closed.

At the time of hurricane Irma, Greg and Donna Daniels packed up their Boxster 986, layering bottles of wine out of their collection into the front foot well, protected by towels, and set their oldest poodle on top when they evacuated out of the Keys to Naples. They now have a 2001 996 Carrera Cabriolet and their newest rescue poodle loves to ride in cars but unfortunately has some special needs so they travel with a separate cage for him if staying overnight. Greg says that this has unfortunately limited their trips in the Porsche with him. Pictured is Penn, the black dog, who has crossed the rainbow bridge as the navigator in the 986. Pavie, the white dog, is not happy about being wakened while serving as navigator in the 996.
For Porsches, Chris Swain has a 2005 Cayenne and a 1988 Carrera. For pets, Chris has Azul, a Blue Heeler/Australian Cattle dog, and two quaker birds, Zuzu and Shorty. This summer Chris will take Azul on a road trip to go hiking and backpacking. One of their planned stops is the Tahoe Rim Trail, which straddles Nevada and California. The trail is 170 miles long and should take about two weeks, give or take, pending conditions and weather. Hiking with Azul will require Chris to carry additional weight for water and food. The hike is routed along the ridgeline of the mountains and water sources can be spaced many miles apart.
Conner is a healthy 13-year-old Toy Poodle who travels everywhere with John Peeling in his 2009 Turbo Cabriolet, including events such as Porsches & Pancakes, car shows, 3rd Thursday socials at Three Forks, the Islamorada lunch run and several times to the Rolex 24 at Daytona. Conner also attended the recent K2 event where he was a hit! John says that when they travel in their Porsche, Conner prefers John’s lap to the little dog box that sits on the console.
Bolt the Boxer loves riding in Manny Sanchez’s 2017 Porsche 911. Manny will take him for a ride once a week around the city and highway. Bolt will start barking when Manny begins to slow down. Manny says that the one challenge is that Bolt like to hang halfway out the window, a habit which is a safety concern. For Titan’s safety, I use a seatbelt harness. I asked the participants what they use and it seems that those with large dogs use a similar device. For smaller dogs, a car seat that the dog can be clipped to with a small lead is used, while another member uses a lamb’s wool box. Teresa says that she uses a doggie car seat with a cushion so Rex can look out of the window. John said that Conner is well-trained and he only uses the leash if they are in unfamiliar places or near a road. To protect my Porsche from Titan’s nails, I use a seat cover. It seems that most members do the same using dog beds, Tibetan rugs, or old towels. Here are a few tips the participants shared for traveling with your furry companion dog: The consensus is to always bring water, a small bag stocked with treats and waste bags, and a towel. Greg advises to know your pet and their limitations and knows that 16 hour trips is the limit for both them and their dogs. Parking lots and rest areas can be scary places for dogs, with lots of new sights, smells and sounds. Greg also says that their dogs never get unclipped from the seat belt without a leash being clipped on first. This simple procedure can save heartache and pain from a dog suddenly spooked in an unfamiliar area. Joe advises to be careful with their tails when you close the door. He said that he caught his previous dog's tail in the door, so he taught Nino to tuck his tail in. Since Chris is preparing for his first extended trip with Azul, he said that petfriendly motels and camping areas had to be considered. He said that he would share more tips when he gets back.

Get Ready to Escape to the Cape!
by Christy Spangler
If you have not registered for the Escape to the Cape in Cape Coral yet, let me entice you - Rick Veingrad who is organizing this get away, shared with me a teaser of what’s in store. On Saturday morning of August 21, 2021, we will meet at Porsche West Broward to socialize before hitting the road at 8:30 am. We will make our way across Alligator Ally and up I-75 north to the Boathouse Tiki Bar & Grill in Ft Myers on the Southwest coast of Florida for lunch. Feeling hot after the drive across the Alley? No problem! Bring your swimsuit to cool off and relax in the Boathouse Tiki Bar pool. After lunch and a swim, we will head to the Westin Hotel Cape Coral resort at Marina Village to check in and enjoy time on your own at the resort hotel before dinner. This is a multi-region event so there will be a chance to meet Porsche enthusiasts from around the state. On Saturday evening, we will have dinner at the hotel’s Waterfront Bar & Bistro featuring a Prime Rib Surf & Turf buffet dinner prepared specially for our group. The buffet will also have a sampling of salads, chicken and shrimp to choose from. On Sunday morning, enjoy breakfast on your own before attending the Escape to the Cape Car Show in the covered garage overlooking the bay and marina. After the car show, we will begin the drive home. On the way, we will stop at the popular Sun Harvest known for Florida citrus, fresh juice, specialty foods, baked goods, ice cream, and gifts. They pack, sell, and ship their fruit. They offer Free juice samples, and for purchase, the vanilla & orange ice cream cones (yum!). Afterwards, we drive back home. Interested? Please go to clubregistration.net for more information on hotel reservations and to register for the event. The Gold Coast Region would like to extend a special invitation to our Kassette and PCA’s Panorama magazine advertisers to participate in Sunday morning’s Escape to the Cape car show and special events. This will be a great opportunity to meet and greet PCA members. Call or email Rick Veingrad for more information. Rick Veingrad 954-472-4010 smallvideo@bellsouth.net

PCA Gold Coast – Member Profiles THE APPLE FELL CLOSE A Father & Son’s Journey via Porsche Sir Isaac Newton discovered gravity sitting under an apple tree. Virtually everyone knows the story or has seen the depiction of the fruit bouncing off his head. It is a great scientific revelation and until that moment, who knew? Recently, the DIE KASSETTE staff was excited to receive a note about a young man, Mr. Noah Ratner, who recently passed his Florida driver's license exam. Ok. So what? Big deal, right? Yet, how proud would you be as a dad if your son “…passed your driver’s test in the 5-speed car that you’ve worked to help nurture back to health”! Yep, read that again. Noah (No) Ratner brought a Porsche 924. He and dad worked to bring it back into being safe, reliable, fun and stylish transportation. Then took and passed the FDL test on his first attempt, in a 5-speed manual transmission 1987 Porsche! But that is not where the story begins, or ends.
Noah at steering wheel in dad’s Boxster 1997 (young and older)
Mark Johnson, staff writer This past spring Noah completed his junior year at Marjorie Stoneman Douglas, with a 4.0 average no less (insert proud parent smiles). Noah is also a Junior ROTC member as he enters his senior year in school. With sister Jordan now out of state in college, it was time for No to Go! Ryan, drove a Nissan 300ZX for years. Then Porsche bug bit him when he acquired a 1997 Boxster with 3K miles in 1999. He added a few personal touches to this car over the years and enjoyed this P-Car for quite some time. The bug bit hard a second time in 2018 when Ryan found a 1957 Vintage Motors Porsche 356 “widebody”. Ryan had always wanted a 356, and this was an awesome chance to add to the garage. The Ratner’s were now a 2 Porsche family calling the individual cars as “the speedster” and “the Boxster”. Noah didn’t drive yet, and the ladies in the family were simply not that into cars. No doubt the pressure was building for Noah as he approached his 16th birthday. With dad being a car guy, it was natural for his son to start considering a vehicle. The specific Rite of Passage for many young men has been and still is getting both a DL and corresponding freedom! Noah Ratner’s initial choice in automobiles was a Nissan 350ZX. Hmmmm, ahhhh ok said dad, but Ryan questioned that selection. It was a reasonable choice as pops had a 300Z car before Noah was born. Noah had seen photos, but not dad's Z car. However, times had changed. A road trip to the Orlando area in August 2020 came up, taken to look at possible vehicles. Ryan and Noah visited the Nort Northam used auto dealership in Winter Park, FL. Northam specializes in Porsche and Mercedes Benz among other vehicles. Looking at several selections at Northam, they spotted a moderately derelict (perhaps?) Porsche 924 in the corner of the shop. It needed work, paint was poor at best, but it was also a great PCar to start your days on the road. Instead of being just another Nissan jockey, the 924 had character and allowed him the opportunity to be different. Noah could become a connoisseur and learn about the cars and the brand. The 924 offers a great mix of adventure, style, and flair.
Very young Noah standing with a Cayman S Mr. Ryan Ratner (dad) is a Porsche guy. Ryan is an estate planning lawyer and PCA Gold Coast member. The Ratner family lives in Coral Springs. They are a four-person family; mom (Ann) & dad, son (Noah) & daughter (Jordan) with no pets, the cat passed away some time ago. For several years the family traveled frequently to Jordan’s softball games. She is currently in college at Young Harris College in North Georgia, a NCAA Division 2 school on scholarship still playing her sport. Noah was always along for the ride, patiently biding his time.

The Ratner Porsche Stable, 924 Silver Bullet, the Boxster, and the Speedster one Sunday morning at TUNERS
This Porsche needed a significant amount of TLC and effort to put back on the road in running condition, but the potential was incredible. The car was rough, and they were not so certain on the future at the outset. They crossed their fingers driving it home from Winter Park while holding the AAA card for luck! Desire, effort and sheer will overcome many challenges. The 924 made it home to Coral Springs where father and son "high 5'd" in the driveway following the trip. Back from Orlando the Ratner boys went to work. To date, the car is running and most of the interior has been updated, repaired, and looking super. To add a bit of serendipity, the upgraded interior of the 924 somewhat oddly matches several of the Boxster interior touches. Inside, the headliner repair or replacement is all that remains to be completed. Just like dad’s cars, the 924 acquired a name: Silver Bullet.
Silver_bullet.Porsche With the 924 in a fairly sorted condition Noah took the Porsche to the local DMV office on May 7, 2021 for his FDL written exam and the requisite behind the wheel road test. He passed on his first attempt (4.0 student remember). The DMV test proctor even said afterword, “. . the minute you did the panic stop, and didn’t stall, I knew you’d pass” Noah replied “. . both feet IN!” A few moments later Noah was granted the gift of freedom, and responsibility of car ownership and safe driving. Most young women and men of this age won’t even consider trying to drive a “stick”. A manual transmission is humorously called the “millennial anti-theft device”. Noah aced his road test driving the 924 5sp!
Ryan Sean Ratner FB Post
Then, (we love this) the very next weekend Noah and Ryan were up in Sebring, FL for a “Chin Track Day”. No spent quite a few laps, at speed, in several Porsche models as a passenger. The ride along included; a race prepped Cayman S, a custom-built Boxster, and a Porsche GT3. In a very short period, the Porsche hook was fully set, hard!

Occasionally, the skills necessary and garage space requirements (especially a hydraulic lift) are exceeded when working on the 924 at home. Should that occur, the folks at TUNERS on Wiles Road in Coral Springs step up and assist in the needed repair. The TUNERS crew is currently working on the steering rack for Noah’s Silver Bullet. The skilled techs and ownership work on each of the Ratner’s Porsches and the care and quality of service shows. To obtain photos for this story, we meet at the TUNERS shop on a Sunday morning. They go out of their way to accommodate the request to stage cars for a quick photo shoot. Their shop is full, but the team pitched in, contributing beyond turning wrenches. Between August 2020 and June 2021, Noah Ratner has moved from being a young lad without a license but with a dream - to being among a very large group of Porsche fanatics! He is an owner with great plans for his car. Expectations for the Silver Bullet include additional refurbishment and upgrades. They follow a simple mantra; prefer stock, but when parts break UPGRADE & IMPROVE. The car will be painted a slightly darker space grey, the current “15-inch rotary phone-dial” wheels will be swapped out at some point for either 16” or 17” Fuchs, and the long-term plan is to set the car up as a 924 Carrera GT “tribute car” with the hood scoop and fender flares. We suspect that Martini Stripes might be added at some point as well. (Note: Noah smiles big at this idea.)
As for dad, Ryan, his fatherly pride couldn’t be more evident. His son is a 4.0 student, JROTC, and owns, drives, and works on his very own Porsche. Besides school, Noah is also spending time in a friends’ shop working on a Chevy LS engine that will power an airboat. (Continued on page 18)

So, while dad is a skilled estate attorney who can’t turn a wrench (by his own admission) his son is learning engines from the inside out installing main bearings, crank, journals, and putting horsepower together. The Ratner men share the same thought; “Porsche’s are all inherently cool. Once you learn there is always someone prettier, faster, or with more money, you appreciate the character of what you have.” Ryan adds, “Don’t forget, it is always more fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow”! Noah smiles, and one can see his wheels turning, with the dreams of a Martini livery 924 at a PCA Gold Coast autocross event, or driving the Tail of the Dragon in western North Carolina. Mr. Noah Ratner has a bright future. His head is on straight with quite a few goals in his sights. It will be fun for dad to watch, encourage, and contribute to his passion and share their mutual enjoyment of the Porsche marque. It will be fun for all of us as we watch this young man grow. His enthusiasm is catching. The Ratner apple tree is ripe with fruit. Gravity, watch out.

Happy Independence Day! by Christy Spangler, Director
I hope you all have a wonderful and safe 4th of July! Like you all probably are, I am ready to hit the road, visit family and friends and get a change of scenery. Need some travel gear? Check out the GCR goodie store! The duffle bag I ordered is nice and bigger than I expected - now I am ready for summer travel especially to the upcoming Escape to the Cape and the October getaway to the mountains. Check out the merchandise at https:// goldcoast.pcawebstore.org. I placed an order with the goodie store when Peter announced it on April 27th. I received my order on May 20th. The website says that orders may take longer due to COVID, but I was surprised it took as long as it did. If you make an order, just be aware of that. It was nice to see some folks wearing their goodie store gear at the June Porsches & Pancakes. Just a reminder of the regularly scheduled GCR events - the first Saturday Porsches and Pancakes and the third Thursday happy hours. Stay tuned to the enews email blasts for these and other events that are added to the schedule. I would like to thank everyone who participated in this feature. I was pleased with the response and was able to include twelve great stories. If you have a story you would like to submit, please reach out to myself or Roger Fabel. This organization is about the members and I would like to hear from you- thoughts, ideas, concerns - you can email me at christyspangler@yahoo.com. I also encourage you to volunteer for events and attend the board/membership meetings or watch them via the GCR Facebook group to see what is going on in the club. Hope to see you at an upcoming event soon. Travel safe and stay healthy.

Photo of the Month
Time Machine
by Christy Spangler, photo of the month chair
This month’s photo was submitted by Michael Spitzer of his 1973.5 911T Targa. In 1973, 10-year-old Michael’s favorite toy car was a yellow Porsche 911 Targa with Fuchs wheels. He does not remember if it was a Matchbox or Hot Wheels car, but growing up in Virginia in the early 70’s, the concept of Porsche did not mean much to him; he just knew that he liked that car. He told himself, “When I grow up, I am going to get myself one of these for real.” Well, little did a naive 10 year old realize that by the time he grew up and could think about owning one of these, they would already be considered collectible. Fast forward to 1999. Michael had just sold his successful business and was back in Virginia with his wife visiting her parents. As they drove down the road, a yellow sports car caught his eye sitting on the edge of a car lot. Michael did a quick U-turn to have a second look. There it was, a yellow 1973.5 911 Targa… the real-life version of his childhood toy car. Same color, same model, same year, same Fuchs wheels. He went in and asked about the car and, long story short, the car had belonged to a a doctor who had grown tired of it, had not been using it and traded it in on a new vehicle. Michael says that his wife looked at him and said ... “Let’s be careful honey and not go crazy spending money just because we sold our company” He thought she made a logical point ... but still... THIS was the childhood dream. That night at his in-law’s house, he and his wife watched a Clint Eastwood movie marathon on TV . Michael commented, “This is my favorite, High Plains Drifter.” She said, “No, it is Pale Rider” He said, “No, it is High Plains Drifter.” She said “Do you want to bet me?” So, they bet. If she won, she could buy a new sewing machine. If he won, he could go down the next morning and buy the 911 Targa. The photo answers the question of who won the bet. Michael, now 58, has owned the car for 22 years. Michael refers to this car as “The Time Machine” because every time he takes it out for a spin, it kind of feels like he is going back to 1973. Thank you Michael, for sharing this photo and your dream-come-true story. He said that he no longer has the toy Porsche, but has been on the hunt for one. Michael used a Samsung Galaxy Smartphone to take this photo. I really appreciate all the great submissions-- please keep them coming!

Tech Corner : Article by Pedro P. Bonilla, Tech Editor
Recently checking my social media accounts, I came upon a question that got me thinking about the past and brought memories of times gone by. The question was: “On which car did you pass your driver’s test?” Let me tell you a story. It’s completely true. I was truly excited that morning as I recall. It was finally going to be official; I was getting my driver’s license if I passed the test. I had had my learner’s permit but now I had just turned 17, an age which allowed me to obtain my driver’s license if I passed the written and driving exams. I knew how to drive, and the actual driving part didn’t worry me since I’d been driving with my dad for some years now, competing in AXs, Gymkhanas and even piloting his rally car with him as co-pilot in the Dominican Republic (DR) where we were living at that time. My worry was more about the written part with all of the specific laws and regulations; you know: At what minimum distance should you follow a car on the highway? What’s the maximum speed on a two-lane highway? etc. My appointment was for 2:00 p.m. that day. I don’t recall the exact circumstances, but I remember that when I asked my folks if one of them could drive me to the DMV in their car so that I could take the test, something had just happened and they were all stressed out about it. After some tense silence, my Dad just said: “Take the rally car . . . and be careful!” Wow, the rally car . . . to the DMV . . . for my exam! . . . Gulp! This was a really cool and scary at the same time. The rally car that Dad and I have competed in about half a dozen times had a white exterior with red interior, a three-year-old Porsche 912 that was fully prepared as an off-road rally vehicle. A very light car, ultra competitive and with a powerful (modified) 1.6 liter engine and a 5-speed transmission, beefed up suspension, harnesses, and half a roll cage. It was also very loud since it had a straight-tuned exhaust with no mufflers. Right after lunch, I couldn’t wait any longer and took the car out to warm it up and after a few minutes, drove off to the DMV office. It wasn’t very far, probably less than 10 miles, and I arrived quite early. I then went to the reception desk and signed myself in. The attendant told me that an instructor would be assigned to me and that I would be called when it was my turn, so I should just take a seat and wait.

DMV driver’s license It was just after 1:00 p.m. The waiting area was hot and full of people waiting to be called for their test or other DMV-related issues. I decided not to sit. I was too anxious and just stood by one of the windows to catch a little refreshing breeze. After just a few minutes of waiting, one of the solid-wood doors to the multiple little offices that surrounded the reception lobby burst open with a loud bang and a rather large guy, who I immediately recognize as the older brother of my close friends, the twins, shouts out: “I need help! . . . Can anyone drive me to my house NOW? It’s a life-or-death emergency!” I instinctively raise my hand so he can see me and say: “I can drive you home, Tony.” Tony rushes over to me. I remember that his face was really red and swollen and he said to me in a raspy voice: “I was just stung by several bees, and I’m very allergic, and I don’t have my adrenalin shot with me; please take me home as fast as you can!” I said: “Sure, my car is right outside.” I run over, unlock it and we both jump in. Tony is looking worse by the minute. Also being allergic to bee stings and other stuff and having recently been through an anaphylactic shock myself, I know how he’s feeling and also know that time is of the essence, so I need to get him home as fast as humanly possible. Some of you may be asking yourself: “Why did this idiot leave home without his EpiPen and why did he not call 911?” This happened in 1969. Neither 9-1-1 nor EpiPen existed yet and we were in the DR where ambulances were a gamble—if you could find a phone that worked and a phone book to search for the number because dialing zero would get you nowhere. Luckily, Tony and the twins didn’t live too far away. Probably about 8 km (5 miles) or so. We were also lucky that it wasn’t 2:00 p.m. yet, when traffic would pick up again. I was driving inspired and on a sacred quest. I was sure that it had been destiny that put me there with the rally car at that precise moment when Tony needed a fast getaway car. Thinking about it now, it’s kind of blurry, trying to recall all of the details. I know there were a few red lights run, multiple STOP signs that flew by as if they were painted green and said GO, and lane changes galore. Maybe even a couple of blocks up the wrong way just because it was shorter and would save time. I remember a street vendor throwing a tomato at me when I scared the bejesus out of him as I drifted around a corner, missing his cart by inches. The sudden loud roar of the racing engine as I appeared around the corner must have been nerve- racking for him. He must have been a baseball pitcher at some time in his youth because he hit my rear window square in the center with the splattering tomato as I sped away. The ride was over quickly—only 6 or 7 minutes since we’d left the DMV—but Tony was really struggling. I turned into his driveway honking the horn and revving the loud engine. Tony’s Mom and Dad both came out as I was helping him out of the car. They took him in right away. I hung around to see if Tony would be OK. About 10 minutes later Tony’s Mom came out and invited me in. Tony, who now was much better after taking an adrenaline shot and some other medication, had told her that
I saved his life. She was in tears and couldn’t stop shaking. Tony’s Dad also came downstairs with Tony who now looked and talked fine. After a couple of minutes of thank-you’s and hugs Tony said that we should get back. He assured us that he was fine and said he had a lot of work pending. We got back in the car and made our way back to the DMV office at a much slower pace and taking another longer route so no one would recognize the car that had just made such a racket. I was also really concentrating on driving correctly and respecting the laws and signage as best as I could. Sometime during our return to the DMV I mentioned to Tony that I had been at the DMV for my driver’s license tests and asked if he knew who my instructor would be and if he could help because I had probably lost my place in line. He said: “I was the instructor assigned to your test, and I seem to recall that you broke every single traffic law in the book . . . during a time when I must have been delirious, because I can see that you drive very well and you are very respectful of the laws and regulations. I am also very thankful that you were there, willing and able to help me. I’m pleased to tell you that as soon as we get back, I’ll fill out the paperwork and you’ll be an officially licensed driver”. That made me feel very happy. Tony and I saw each other occasionally after that day but we never talked about our experience again. I had practically forgotten all about it until that question on social media brought it all back.
Well, that’s my story, and I’m sticking to it. As I said, the story is true, I just changed the names to protect the innocent. Tony’s real name is not Tony and the rally car was not a ’66 white Porsche 912 with red interior; it was a ’66 white Alfa Romeo Giulia TI with red interior (there had to be Porsche content in the story, sorry). Happy Porsche’ing, Pedro

Autocross Update
Steve Kidd, Autocross Chair
Saturday, May 22, was one of the most memorable Auto-x events in recent times. While the event started as just an ordinary autocross, GCR partnered with our friends at Suncoast Region and the event turned into the multi-regional “Spring Weekend at Sebring Racetrack.” While Zonefest typically occupies the time frame around Memorial Day weekend, there was a void this year as Zonefest was moved to Labor Day weekend, opening the door for a new weekend event this year. Here is what Spring Weekend at Sebring offered: Driver’s Ed—Host: Suncoast Region; Saturday & Sunday all day Auto-x School—Host: Gold Coast Region; Saturday morning Track Tour for Charity—Host: Suncoast Region; Saturday lunchtime Competition Autocross—Host: Gold Coast Region; Saturday afternoon Now for the details about the Autocross and Autocross school since that is the portion of the weekend Gold Coast was handling. GCR typically hosts an AX school once a year, primarily to introduce newcomers to this great sport. We try to make our AX schools fun, educational, and a good opportunity to really enjoy your Porsche. In addition, everyone is reminded that their car should be running well, have good tires and brakes, and no fluid leaks. Instructors have many years of Auto-x experience and the patience to share their experience with students. Here is basic outline of what was offered during the 5/22/2021 AX school: Chalk Talk - Basics and Safety / what to expect at an autocross event: • Terminology • Auto-x do’s and don’ts • Typical work assignment that is required with any autocross • Proper use of flags, radios, fire extinguishers • Off course and downed cones call-in, cone penalties • Staying safe & Covid-19 precautions • Helmets and loaner helmets • How to register, car numbers and class • Autocross Men’s and Ladies’ classes (Stock/novice, production, improved, modified, PCR’s) • How to prepare your car and yourself • What to expect at your first Auto-x, registration, cleaning out your car, tech inspection • Going through the finish and getting your time • Comparing your results with others in your class • Overview of the Gold Coast Autocross Program • Course designs • Performance driving theory • Don’t forget lots of cold drinking water, hat, sunscreen, snacks, and a good sportsman’s attitude After the chalk talk, students moved on to a course walk, parade laps with instructors, and finally spirited laps with instructors. We were lucky to have a great group of instructors from several regions, and three instructors (Steve from Gold Coast, Jerry from Suncoast, and Tom from Everglades) conducted small group course walks. Later, all instructors assisted in one-onone instruction during the parade and spirited runs. At the conclusion of the school, participants could enjoy the track tour, get a bite to eat or walk the course again. (insert 3 photos of instructors with students) The Auto-x started promptly at 1:30, and all competitors enjoyed six runs. This truly was a multi-regional event as seven regions were represented at this event, with the long-distance award going to David V. from the Carolina’s region. (insert photo) Fastest time of the day (FTD) went to Trent K. of Citrus Region. Steve’s course design was a variation of one that has been used before because it’s safe, two to three cars can be on course at the same time, and it provides challenges for both momentum and horsepower cars. For full results, check the track events/autocross tab on GCR’s website, www.goldcoastregion.org. It is important to mention that DE not only enjoyed record numbers, but also has a great turnout for the charity track tour. The track tour is not hot laps, but rather parade laps run around the track at highway speeds. Any vehicle can join in with a contribution to charity. Additionally, Everglades Region conducted a tour from the Naples area to Sebring that weekend and quite a few Everglades members went on the track tour and / or participated in the Auto-x. A huge thanks to our friends at Suncoast Region, particularly Jerry and Kirsten for their help in every aspect of this event, and to Dottie for handling much of the organizational and administrative details that keep these events running smoothly. Tentative AX schedule for the remainder of 2021 Summer break from June to August Event #4 9/11/2021 or 10/09/2021 at Sebring or??? Event #5 Tentatively mid-November.
