President’s Corner Steve Kidd - President
Thanks to our many GCR volunteers who continue to plan and coordinate the numerous events GCR does every month ….from the breakfasts, socials, autocrosses, rallys, tech & concours and drives, GCR has something for everyone. Also coming soon will be the 1st GCR Driver Education in quite a while.....Please follow the e-mail blasts about registration for this DE. Our autocross program combined the talents of Suncoast Region and Gold Coast Region to put on a multi regional Autox at Sebring on Mother’s Day which was very challenging and fun. This was the fourth AutoX of our 7 event series, with event #5 picking back up on Sept 7 at Sebring. This will be my last opportunity to talk about PCA’s upcoming Porsche Parade....before the Parade. The next President’s article has a July 1 deadline for the August issue so you won’t be able to read about Parade results in the Kassette until the September issue. So for those of you that have not been following the Parade information provided so far, or are new to PCA, here is a basic recap of what is coming to our region in late July. When and Where The 64th Porsche Parade will be held at the Boca Raton Resort & Club in Boca Raton, Florida Sunday July 21 – Saturday July 27, 2019. “Parade” last visited Florida in 2003 when it came to Saddlebrook Resort near Tampa . The
Boca Raton Resort & Club (A Waldorf Astoria Resort) sits on 356 acres with lush gardens and formal courtyards. The property has shuttle service every 15 minutes to the Boca Beach Club (there is a private ½ mile white sand beach you can enjoy) as well as a water taxi that is a fun diversion for Resort guests. There is a state-of-the-art Wave Simulator (first of its kind in Florida) at Flow Rider and it is well worth checking out. For many of us locals, we often refer to the Boca Raton Resort as “the pink hotel” due to the color and the fact that from the sea the pink structure serves as a landmark to find the Boca Inlet. Exactly what is the “Porsche Parade”? “Parade” is a week-long event comprised of four competitive events (Concours, TSD Rally, Autocross and Technical Quiz—trophies are awarded for all) along with a variety of activities ranging from Banquets, Tours (driving, bus, cruise and self-guided), Tech Academy, Golf Tournament, 5K Run/Walk, Art Show, Drive and Compare, Wine and Beer Tastings, Parade Kid activities as well as some new venues in the mix. While many members choose to participate for the entire week, you can be involved as much as your travel plans or work schedule allows. Why should you plan to attend or visit? The Porsche Parade is PCA’s premier event and moves around to different locations every year. Site planning is done 3-5 years in advance so that the best deals are secured. Next year the Parade

will be held in California, most likely the 2021 Parade will be held in the midwest or northeast. The last time a Parade was held in Gold Coast Region was in 1968 when our region was only 5 years old. Don’t plan on Parade coming to our region again anytime soon after Parade 2019. Well over 200 PCA members from GCR are signed up to attend this parade. Some of our members will stay a few days...or the whole week at the host Hotel. Others may choose to stay in their homes and commute to events and the hotel. This option is never available unless the Parade is in your back yard ….like this year in Boca! Hungry for more details? The best place to get the latest parade news is the official Parade website. It’s updated regularly and has links to places of interest. Also feel free to make a call or speak to some of the veterans of past parades. www.porscheparade.org On a final note ….Members... please make sure you list your appropriate family or co member in your PCA membership profile. This can be done on line when you log into the PCA’s national website, or by making a call or written request to National. A new phone APP available to region officers allows PCA juniors to be added on the APP as well as new membership requests that are sent to the National office and acted upon immediately by National staff. Until next month.....Steve

Editor’s Notes Welcome to a very exciting PCA month. We are very lucky to have this years Porsche Parade in our region. Since this is a national event, the Parade is held many thousands of miles away but this year we are in Boca. I hope our articles and workshops have educated you about what to expect and how to be prepared for this once a year competitive fun event that brings our PCA family together for a great week of Porsche activities and many banquets to celebrate. Last month we included many Parade issue covers. If you look close you will see our president and his wife receiving the national PCA Family of the year from Dr. Porsche and the grandson of Dr
Roger Fabel- Editor
Ferry Porsche. Quite an honor but well deserved. Gold Coast will be well attended this year and I hope to see many of you enjoying the experience. Another big event is the restart of our DE program. Our Drivers Education program was the gold standard of PCA but for many reasons we were not able to support the program and the increased costs of renting the track. I hope you will join us as Parade ends and help our DE program to become a well attended learning event for those that want to enjoy the Porsche track experience and teaching others to do the same. If you have not signed up please check out the flyer below and come join the fun.

Last month a group of our members attended a very special tour of Gunnar Racing. If you enjoy Porsche racing history and seeing special cars valued over $1,000.000 then this is the place. Photos and stories about our tour will be in the August issue along with a recap from our ZoneFest in Mt Dora. Would you like to get more involved in the club? We are always looking for volunteers in many areas. To name a few the Kassette is looking for members that would like to write articles and about their PCA experience. The social team is always looking for new events for their drive and dine tours. If one of those areas interests you please contact me, See you at Parade, Roger

AUTOFEST 2019 Fast Cars and Food trucks One of the underlying philosophies of membership in PCA is to have fun with your Porsche, the great part is that fun can come in several flavors and intensities. For some it’s the intensity of a Track Day or Autocross, and for others it’s Touring, Social Events, or Concours and Car Show. An even greater part is that these events can be enjoyed at whatever level you want. On the Concours scene Gold Coast attempts to offer a wide spectrum of events ranging from the series Concours (Porsches by the Bay), to the informal car show (Spring Fling), AUTOFEST 2019 fits right in the middle. It’s an event designed specifically for the member that enjoys showing their car while meeting and socializing with other car people, and while you’re at it, enjoy delicious food. AUTOFEST 2019 was a complete success. The weather was perfect with blue skies and no rain, and the park was beautiful, with the lake making a great backdrop for showing great cars. This year Porsche West Broward was an active participant in the show, displaying four cars showing the full range of Porsche performance from SUV’s to sports cars. We also had Porsche Design as a sponsor and they had a great display of Porsche products. This year we had 75 cars entered in the event with several more impromptu observers. AUTOFEST is a different kind of show for Gold Coast. Plantation Heritage Park where the show is held,

is right in the middle of a residential neighborhood so we got a very high percentage of visitors, more than we normally get at our more private events. The park’s count for spectators was over 600 during the show. This event is one of our fund raisers for Joe DiMaggio’s Children’s Hospital, and with the help of our friends we raised just under $1,200 dollars for this worthy cause. We would like to congratulate the following winners for a job well done. Class 1. Mark Goodman Boxster Class 2. Danny Simonson 930 Turbo Class 3. David Cleary GT3R Class 4. Dean Kantis 944T Class 5. From The Members : 2019 Werks Reunion
by Micheal Brooks, GCR I wanted to write to you all a follow up report on the Works Reunion that was mentioned briefly in the May issue of Die Porsche Kassette. I attended that event, as well as the Concours at Amelia Island the next day this past March. Both events were fantastic! Obviously, the Works Reunion was an all Porsche show. There were approximately 300 or so cars on the “show field” and approximately 150 signed up to be “judged”. Several hundred other Porsche’s came up, just to see everything. I drove up to Jacksonville the evening before going to Amelia Island and I entered my 997.2 Turbo S to be judged. I spent about 45 minutes cleaning my ( already immaculate) vehicle with about 36,000 miles on the clock, prior to judging. There were approximately 25 cars in my “class”. I am proud to say that my vehicle did win a trophy. It is interesting to note that my car was the ONLY one

there that had a white exterior with a red leather interior. Four or five other folks at the show did mention to me that they had not seen that color combination before and they thought it was great. So did the people judging my car. In fact, the only time I can recall seeing that color combination before was on my 997 GT 3. I did have to wait quite a number of months to get my Turbo when new because the dealership could not locate that color combo in “their area”, so the car was ordered from the factory. As one would expect, I was very anxious to get it and salesperson was kind enough to advise me that it could be shipped from Germany by air for about $10,000. I passed on that offer! Many, many Porsche’s were present at the Amelia island Concours the next day, including a few 917 and 962 race cars. It was definitely well worth the trip to see, and I should note, that none of the Porsche‘s at Amelia Island had a white/red color combo!
... notes on the “black car“. It is being produced by a Gunther Works in California and is one of 25 they will build. Half of that number are already spoken for. They are 993 based with a 4 liter engine and all of their body panels are carbon fiber covered in 14 coats of clear coat! It was explained to me that the 14 clear coats were necessary to protect the bare carbon finish from degradation in strong sunlight. The interior of the car is also moderately modified and it all looks quite impressive. Needless to say, it weighs less than a regular 993, and it attracted quite a crowd. One other cool featue is that the wheels are made of carbon fiber. As I recall many options are available and the “basic” price was approximately $625,000. Unfortunately, I was unable to leave a deposit.

Inexpensive Horsepower upgrade for late model Porsches The IPD Plenums were born in Southern California in 2004 and for many years were individually hand built and delivered to local Porsche dealers and tuning shops in the area. The first Plenums were modified factory OE air distributors with “shoehorn” diversions or splitters installed inside the factory “T” intake. But it was quickly discovered that even greater potential could be realized with a groundup design that would utilize a more pronounced merge and reshaped inlet. This new and improved design delivered even greater performance gains across both powerbands. Once the new design was fully optimized, tested and validated, it was patented, put into production and shipped all over the world where there are Porsches. So what is a Plenum and where is it located on the engine? By definition, a plenum is a chamber that contains air, gas, or liquid at positive pressure. The IPD Plenums are a component of the Porsche intake system and located in between the intake manifolds and throttle body, positioned directly above the flat-six engine. The IPD Plenums replace the factory plastic “T” shaped Air Distributor with a superior and more efficient cast aluminum “Y” designed Plenum. The theory is simple, the more efficiently an internal combustion engine can breathe, the more efficiently it can produce power. The factory “T” style intake experiences turbulence as intake air passes through the throttle body and hits the proverbial wall, forcing air to seek a path of least resistance to the left and right banks. The “Y” designed Plenum splits and channels the intake air flow reducing turbulence, increasing velocity and optimizing laminar flow. This smoother, faster and less turbulent air flow enables greater volumes of air to enter the combustion chambers resulting in improved power and torque across both power curves. IPD further optimizes intake air flow by dimpling and shot peening the interior surface of the Plenums. Although this might seem counter intuitive, a rough textured and dimpled surface creates a boundary layer that further improves and optimizes flow over a given area more efficiently. It’s the same principle of why a dimpled golf
ball travels farther than a smooth golf ball. Although this dimpled effect definitely help contribute to improved performance, it’s the overall shape and design of the Plenum that is responsible for delivering the bulk of the performance gains. Another very popular option with the Plenums is to upgrade to a larger throttle body. IPD offers a “Competition” line of Plenums that utilize the next larger throttle body size than was originally equipped on that specific model Porsche. So, you can either upgrade from a 68mm to a 74mm (996 Turbo and 986 Boxsters) of from a 74mm to an 82mm (987, 987.2, 996, 997.1 or 997.1TT). Bigger is almost always better when it comes to Naturally aspirated engines and larger TB’s. But turbo applications require a TB that is properly sized and optimized for the engine output and boost levels to avoid pressure drop and that dreaded turbo lag. Porsche is famous for limiting engine output by effectively restricting engine air intake at the TB to prevent lower level models from outperforming certain flagship models, especially those with highly coveted and prolific racing pedigree. This was and still is a very popular practice with all Boxster and Cayman models, including the GT4. The Competition Plenums and larger TB’s go together like frankfurters and schnitzel and are without question the most popular Plenums sold. Although the IPD Plenums deliver considerable added performance with all applications, they deliver even more impressive power and
torque gains with the turbo applications. The Turbo Plenums not only deliver an additional 35-45 wheel horsepower, they reduce turbo lag and improved boost response by minimizing pressure drop at the throttle body. This enables peak boost to be realized earlier giving you greater engine performance at a lower RPM with a more linear and desirable power band. But the percentage of power gain are actually quite similar with both NA and Turbo power improvements ranging from 8-10%. And being a product of efficiency gains are realized from launch to redline, rarely touching the factory power curves. The superior and proven design of the Plenums deliver substantial and quantifiable power and torque gains that you can see on the dyno, time at the track and feel in the seat of your pants.
