I was surprised the other day when I heard that Chevrolet was dropping the Malibu from production. Not that I am a fan of the car, but I guess it served its purpose to the car buying public. But that’s not really what stopped me in my tracks. The rest of the news statement did. It went on to say that this makes the Corvette the only IC car that Chevy produces. When did this happen? I was aware of more and more EV’s coming on the market, but completely missed the fact that IC cars were being eliminated on the other end.
Now since you are reading this in a Porsche enthusiast newsletter, I
can assume that you enjoy cars and Porsches in particular. So, you are probably already aware that there are plans to introduce the completely electric Macan this summer with the electric Boxster and Cayman waiting in the wings. The disappointing part of that story is that the IC versions of those cars will be dropped. With one or two exceptions, we are on a steady course to the disappearance of the IC Porsche. Just like the manual transmission, blink, and it will be gone. We will find ourselves listening to old recordings of that flat six scream at redline and reminiscing about perfect downshifts, or the distinctive sound they make on startup.
Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against EV’s, I just don’t think they fit my lifestyle. For example, like most Porsche owners I have more than one car and thus the Porsche is not a daily driver. That means home charging would work because there is always time to charge the battery. Where it doesn’t work is going on a drive in excess of 150 miles round trip. What do you do when 30 cars are driving to a location and coming back? Do you ask them to wait while you charge? I know this all sounds trivial, but it does sadden me to see the era of the enthusiast car ending. You will know we hit rock-bottom when the Porsche flat-six soundtrack is piped in.

THE LADIES OF GCR... Celebrate and Create at Paint & Sip Social
Story by Alicia Laya, Staff WriterPainting can be such a fun team building activity, especially when enjoyed with a group of friends. It’s a fantastic way to relax and even get to show off some artistic flare.
The ladies of the Gold Coast Region shared an amazing afternoon on Saturday, April 13th to kick off their first social gathering of the year.
This inaugural social event celebrating all the ladies of the GCR was held at Paint the Grain studios in Davie, the perfect place to craft a paint & sip social gathering.
Paint the Grain is a do-it-yourself wood signs workshop and gift store that welcomes all ages, groups and individuals and offers a chance to paint wood home décor signs to display in their home or office or share as gifts.
The concept is easy: Paint the Grain supplies all the paint, materials, tools and wood. You simply choose a project from their many assorted choices they offer on their website, book your time, come into their studio, and paint your masterpiece wood sign.
The best part is that you get to take home your prized wood sign that you just painted, but you leave the mess behind!
With no previous experience at all needed and no creative bone necessary, Paint the Grain studios offers professional helping hands at
their workshops from their friendly staff of instructors.
The studio had everything ready and laid out at the workshop tables for each GCR lady-Artisan to explore, create and paint.
Originally the workshop social event was open for up to 20 ladies to attend, but the enthusiasm kept building with more ladies calling in to join and they ended up with a total of 23 GCR ladies in attendance.
The ladies were most fortunate to have a personal touch added to their social event, as the owner Jasmine Nolan was personally on hand to greet them and individually guide each ladyArtisan on painting their individual project.
Jasmine would go to each of the workshop tables, checking in with each lady-Artisan and offering her top-notch recommendations on which paint colors to choose, demonstrating the different painting and sanding techniques, and how to use the different wood crafting tools.
Jasmine commented on her website that it’s like bringing your Pinterest dreams to life.
She also commented a previous online interview that she is most proud of building her business from the ground up. She added that she has put in countless hours of research, work and trial and error. Jasmine noted she likes to consider
herself as “homemade” while her competition and other styles of paint & sip parties are fast food franchises.
To add more excitement to this social event, host Lissette Gonzalez brought in a fabulous assortment of flavorful finger foods that included, wraps, hors d’oeuvres, fruits and cheeses, sweet treats and a specialty cake, coupled with zesty Sangria and wine.
In between painting their wood signs, the ladies got a chance to mingle, making new friends and reconnecting with others. Lissette commented that she also got to meet several GCR ladies that she had not met before and got to spend time with those she knew.
Inside the studio, everyone could feel the contagious artistic energy in the room and the camaraderie, as the ladies cheered and complimented each other’s work of art, but outside the studios, the vibrancy of a different work of art brimmed the parking lot with the line of Porsches.
Several ladies met up outside and got a chance to stroll the parking lot to admire the artful display of cars.
One of the best moments of this inaugural social was the raffle of two personalized labeled wine bottles and with a bit of lady luck the two winners were Lourdes Lopez and Adriana Lue.
Paint the Grain studios was a charming venue, an excellent way to spend a Saturday afternoon bonding with fellow Porsche loving ladies, over food and drinks, arts and crafts. Kudos to Lissette for an enjoyable afternoon bringing 23 GCR ladies together in style. Lissette’s meticulous attention to every detail created
an atmosphere of joy and laughter, ensuring a memorable experience for all the ladies. With much grateful appreciation to Jasmine Nolen, the owner of Paint the Grain studios for all her patience and professionalism and to Noemi Sanchez who introduced the idea, as well as to Dottie Kidd for all her valued support making this
ladies’ inaugural social event a grand success.
Thank you to the ladies who came out and joined in the celebration.

SPRING FLING
People's Choice Car Show and Favorite Foods
Story by Cynthia Fluhart, event ChairWith glorious weather and over 80 Porsches from GCR, does it get any better than that? Members enjoyed cheeseburgers, hot dogs, grilled chicken and incredible varieties of salads, appetizers, side dishes and desserts, that members brought to share. If you left hungry, it was by choice. One could enjoy a game of dominoes since there was a special table as four played at a time, cornhole, and junior activities for over 25 of GCR youngest.
There was a new twist this year, which included a homemade food contest for which members voted for their favorites. Wayne Lue won for best Colombian empanadas, Alexis Calero won for best salad (avocado, tomatoes and many other delights), Jan Lachneit won for her cheesecake, Jen Phillip won for her almond cake and Cynthia Fluhart won for German Chocolate Cupcakes.
There were 28 Porsches that participated in one of seven classes for a first-place award in the People’s Choice car show, which will get them ready for November’s Judged Concours in Plantation. Winning in (Class 1) 356/914 was Paul Raben, (Class 2) Air Cooled 911 was Scott Vetstein, (Class 3) Water Cooled 911 was David Lehman, (Class 4) Boxster/Cayman was Steve Melvin (Class 5) GT was Jean-Phillippe Larochelle, (Class 6) Transaxle was Hector Plasencia, (Class 7) four-door was Alex Ursa. Congratulations to all participants and we hope to see these

PORSCHE ROCKS - MIAMI BREWING COMPANY
The Lufts making music while entertaining a BIG PCA crew
Story by Mark Johnson, Staff WriterFollowing their large-scale debut at DRTX in January, the Lufts band, comprised of all Porsche owners, took to the stage at Schnebly Winery/ Miami Brewing Company to entertain a substantial contingent of PCars and their owners. Nearly 80 Porsche vehicles and perhaps over 100 members from the Gold Coast Region drove to Schnebly Winery/Miami Brewing Company in the Redlands for the first concert offered by the Lufts for the benefit of our membership.
The Lufts band was formed leading up to DRT after a few of the guys met for drinks and camaraderie in a member’s garage. A discussion led to what instruments they played, including drums, six-string and bass guitars, keyboards and an ability to sing. This meeting led to a few “jam sessions” and the foundation of a second band, the Outlaws, who are also comprised of Porsche owners with musical talents.
Both the Lufts and the Outlaws began practicing and playing for their own enjoyment. Alvaro Rodriguez, founder of DRT, heard both bands play and invited them to perform at DRTX the 2024 event during both Saturday and Sunday afternoons. The debut at DRTX was a major success for both the event and the bands. As we know, DRT is Florida’s largest Porsche automobile gathering, and these Porsche bands complimented the event with their high energy and quality performances.
Our Social Chair, Ms. Christy Spangler along with her late husband Frank Spangler, held a couple of musical events at their home. Frank was a skilled musician with ties to the New Orleans music scene. Christy had the inkling to bring back such events, but her home was much too small to hold GCR and the larger number of cars expected. With the assistance of Ruben Fuentes, the Schnebly Winery/ Miami Brewing Company facility was approached, welcomed the opportunity and a concert was on!
The Lufts band members are Jeannine Blandon who sings lead vocals and is also the band spokesperson, Willy Perez de Corcho and JC Muñiz both on lead guitars, Henry Suarez bass guitar, Manny Fernandez drums and Jevon Olea keyboards/rhythm guitar and vocals. Willy’s daughter, Ms. Alexandra Perez de Corcho will also join the band as a vocalist. It is quite a talented group that performed popular alternative rock music that spanned the 1970’s through the 2000’s.
The Lufts, l to r, JC Muñiz, Jevon Olea, Manny Fernandez, Jeannine Blandon, Henry Suarez and Willy Perez de Corcho.
The Miami Brewing Company offered an outdoor stage, great parking, open viewing, food and super home brews to round out the afternoon of talented music performances and Porsche fellowship.
Additionally, within the Miami Brewing Company, GCR featured four special Porsches. They were Porsche vehicles that had been featured on the cover of the Kassette or in articles within the newsletter. These were the ’99 996 C2 of Robert Salvador Jr. (Cover Jan. ’24), Suneal Nandigam’s #03 Porsche GT3 Cup car (Cover Apr. ’24), Robert Salvador Sr. 1995 911 Signal Orange (Apr. ’24 Finding Gold) and Emilio Azan’s 1984 911 Cab (Feb ’24 Cars as Stars).
Porsches and Porsche populace were everywhere, singing along, swaying, enjoying a few adult beverages and taking in a super day. Watch for another concert coming soon featuring the Outlaws to entertain and bring the GCR folks together to enjoy the common bond of super music and wonderful automobiles.
GOLD COAST REGION – TRACK DAY JUNE 22nd
Yes, we return to Homestead-Miami Speedway… get your motor runnin’!!!
The date is set, catering and t-shirts are ordered, drivers and instructors are enrolled and in a couple of short weeks, the Gold Coast Region will hold our first high-performance driver education (DE) event at HMS for 2024.
On Saturday June 22nd, the Homestead track will open for GCR participants at 7:00 a.m. We will be driving the fourteen turns 1.53-mile infield course for our driver’s education event. This will be the first of two scheduled events for 2024, with the second DE track day planned for Sunday, September 29th
The GCR DE will offer three run groups, a novice (green) group, an intermediate (blue) group and a solo (white) group, all running under PCA requirements with an additional instructor run group (black). Expect to be on the track driving at least four sessions, weather permitting. Additionally, a catered lunch is scheduled for all participants, drivers, instructors, volunteers and operations team. All participants will be given an event t-shirt as part of their registration fee or services provided (instructor/volunteer).

FINDING GOLD
Danny
Abouekde, aka Dr. Danny
The Doctor is in...Porsche!
Member Feature by Mark JohnsonDanny Abouekde, MD, is a BoardCertified Physician in Family Practice. He attended medical school at Nova Southeastern University and completed his residency in Family Medicine at Lakeside Medical Center in Palm Beach County. Hence, the guys call him Dr. Danny. It is a nickname that fits well with his smile and easy going demeanor.
We will get to his Porsche history in a moment, but the most telling and favorite response to our basic questions were his thoughts about becoming involved with the Porsche community. As he learned about PCars, he has also shared his expertise. “I’ve educated them a lot about their health. I’ve become the resident Doctor for the group and have had many of these friends join my practice as patients.” Does it get any better than that? Dr. Danny sharing his knowledge to the betterment of the Porsche pals around him.
Danny Abouekde is originally from Houston, TX but currently lives in Miami. He is joined in life by his wife Alexandra Abouekde and their Bernese Mountain Dog, Coco. Alexandra appears to have been Danny’s true love as she suggested a Porsche for
their first vehicle. That suggestion led the family to becoming a two-Porsche family. Coco also greatly enhances the family experience. At any moment when a “car ride” is mentioned, Coco jumps into the rear seat and offers up a huge toothy, tongue wagging grin. “Let’s Goooooooo!”
Looking back a few years, Dr. Danny first became immersed in automobiles about the same time he could reach the pedals of his parent’s Ford Explorer. As a kid he was one of those young men who could name every make and model of the
cars passing by, even though he could barely see out the backseat window. He was in his early teens, about 13-14 years old, when he really started the desire to drive.
His parents used the ’96 Explorer as a family hauler and grocery getter. His parents were not into cars, the Ford was simply a tool for transportation. But the ’96 Ford Explorer was equipped with the V8 option, 5.0 Liters of sound and torque, quite powerful. Danny suggests that it was a great vehicle to learn his initial driving skills. With instant throttle response and no traction control, this SUV could be a handful. The condition is called tail happy also known as oversteer. The combination of power and a lightweight rear end taught car control, even as large as the Explorer was.
On the very day he turned 15 years old, Danny arrived at the DMV to obtain his learner’s permit.
Step one into freedom was completed and the permit issued. Unfortunately, not one hour later, he was pulled to the roadside for speeding. The violation was for 51 mph in a 40 mph zone. This step offered a much steeper learning curve than collecting and passing step one. Many of us have been there with a moving violation, which is almost as much a rite of passage as is the ability and privilege to drive.
With this significant lesson learned, his first personal vehicle was a Mitsubishi Eclipse equipped with a manual transmission. The “stick” in a somewhat nimble vehicle provided great memories and strengthened his passion for driving. Years later the Mitsubishi was superseded by an Audi S4, a 2002 “MY” vehicle that was genuinely a fast car. The Audi also led to several more stories that, as Danny suggested, are better left out of this feature article.
Eventually, college, medical school and marriage called. Each step forward progressed and eventually led to his residency at Lakeside Medical Center. Growing closer to life as a doctor, the opportunity arose to make a move into Porsche. Alexandra needed to upgrade from her current SUV to something else.
Her vehicle made it through college, but it was time for a newer, better ride. Enter the “gateway drug” (Dr. Danny’s exact words) to Porsche ownership, a Cayenne. Dr. & Mrs. Abouekde found a nicely depreciated 2016 Cayenne. It was offered at a great price with low miles. It was a very good-looking vehicle; hey, it’s a Porsche.
Alexandra and Danny had been attending both the Rolex 24 at Daytona Beach, and the 12 Hours at Sebring. Sports car racing was part of the allure of the Porsche brand. Immediately joining PCA they were able to gain access to the Porsche corral at both races. Now the Porsche passion was set deeply, and the only remaining step was, well guess, a 911. With the acquisition of the Cayenne and the great drive it offered, he soon realized he “needed to get a 911.”
During his last year of residency, the grueling pace was compounded by Covid. His time was spent seeing patients in an overflowing intensive care unit (ICU). These residency periods are a test of stamina and ability to think clearly while under tremendous pressure. This trial by fire is real and a substantial ordeal for young doctors to transit on their way
to their medical practice of choice. Danny was headed to the Physicians Group of South Florida, one of the only remaining partner owned medical practices in SOFL. It would be the penultimate move of his career to date.
Once settled in at the practice, the thoughts and dreams of the 911 morphed into reality. He got serious about looking for a 911 with the following qualifications: it had to be a convertible, a cabrio in Florida is a must. The 911 needed to be optioned with a PDK, automatic transmission so Alexandra could drive it as well. Then the desire was honed into the 991 generation. Such a Porsche was modern enough and offered enhanced reliability, but still carried a great naturally aspirated 3.8L flat six rear engine and the classic Porsche body line. As a cabriolet, he and Alexandra and Coco could truly enjoy the best of Florida weather almost year round.
Luck was evident during his search. Early in the Covid crisis car prices were quite depressed. Nobody wanted to spend extravagantly or buy a vehicle that was deemed unnecessary. An expensive Porsche was a superfluous vehicle at that moment. The search for a specific build 991 led Danny to a Jeep dealership in Miami. Fortunately, it was not a lengthy search and the dealership had been holding the car for several months. Danny threw a low-ball offer at the sales manager, and he took the offer, happy to move the unit. In October 2020, masks were still the rage and cars were not selling. In Danny and Alexandra’s case, timing was excellent.
That all changed about six months later when the auto industry woke up and Porsche prices started a seemingly meteoric rise. Through Instagram, Danny came to know the Miami Porsche group
Vintage Vices. Sebastián Mercader invited Dr. Danny to join. Through Seb, he met many of the members. He was surprised to find out that these fellows and ladies were even more into Porsche than he was. He learned about the air-cooled vintage PCars, and so many other fun areas of Porsche passion. He fell into a group of aficionados.
Danny suggests, “…that’s the neat thing about Porsches in particular. It’s a subgroup of a subgroup of car enthusiasts, a club within a club.” As he dove into the deep end of the Porsche pool, he also shared his medical knowledge such that a mutually beneficial relationship evolved. Andres Missair, a Vintage Vices founder, shared the Porsche mantra of, “It’s not about the cars, it’s about the people.” We’ve heard that somewhere.
Alexandra, Dr. Danny and Coco have met a ton of wonderful people and acquired a medical satchel full of great memories. These recollections include Targa rallies in NC & TN mountains, HDPE track days, spirited group drives and the overall camaraderie of the Porsche family. Heading to the track, the 911 is towed by the family Cayenne. The couple and Coco drive to Sebring or Homestead as a family trip. Despite the loud noise at the track, Coco seems to enjoy the experience.
Dr. Danny has been a Gold Coast Region member since acquiring the Cayenne in October 2020. He has several favorite models within the brand that include the 964 and 993 turbos and the 918. PEC Atlanta was visited during a trip to the Carolinas, and as noted, he attends both the Rolex 24 and the 12 at Sebring.
Dr. Danny was made a partner at Physicians Group of South Florida in early April. To say his medical career is thriving would be appropriate. We might suggest that he is no longer “practicing” medicine but achieving. His practice comes more often in the DE event at Sebring or Homestead where driving at speed and under control takes a similar amount of discipline and constant concentration. Nonetheless, practice makes perfect, and Dr. Danny is moving firmly in both directions of achievement.
Sebring 12 Hours for 2024 –
Kassette Staff WriterExceptional might be an understatement. The 12 Hour Race at Sebring for 2024 set the bar even higher in terms of excitement, competitive racing, attendance, and certainly fun.
Starting with attendance it was reported that well over 100,000 people attended the race, a record crowd for the 12 Hour Race. It seems that much of the pent up demand from the years of covid plague has been completely released. Race fans were out in full force to cheer on over 200 race cars, 18 Manufacturers and nearly 250 vehicle transporters (IMSA numbers) in multiple classes and races over the four day period, March 13-16, 2024.
Multiple racing series were held including the Mazda Miata MX5 Cup, Lamborghini Super Trofeo, Porsche Carrera Cup and the Alan Jay 120 –Michelin Pilot Challenge (featuring two classes: GS – Grand Sport, and TCR – Touring Class/Racing). Each of these class competitions led up to the ultimate weekend event, the 72 running of Twelve Hours of Sebring. This race started at 9:40 am with four individual classes, GTP, LMP2, GTD and GTD-Pro and a total of 58 cars on the grid. The race concluded 12 hours later, roughly 9:40 pm, in the dark.
Throughout it all the fans were treated to incredibly tight racing, all eight GTP cars still racing at the end of the 12 hour period were on the lead lap, with the top two cars separated by less than a second. An Acura won with Louis Deletraz at the wheel, passing Sebastien Bourdais in a Cadillac on the last lap for the win. A Porsche Penske Motorsport 963 finished the race in third, podium finish. They ran in first late in the race, but a flat tire and pit stop dropped them from first place contention. It was extremely close racing for the entire 12 Hours.
Gold Coast Region members were out in force. Howard and Jamie Chevaux Jacobs held their prime viewing spot in Seven Sebring Hotel at Turn 7 of the Sebring track. They held their annual event viewing from the Andretti Suite overlooking the track. Of course, quite a few GCR folks took Howard and Jamie up on their hospitality including Pedro Fernandez, Lori Renzetti, Ed Kohly and quite a few others. Also in attendance were Nestor and Noemi Sanchez, camped on the front straight in a motorhome (parked next to our great friend Kyle Rathbun, past GCR President). We know that Louie, Susan and son Timothy Maragos were enjoying the race as well from their prime vantage and viewing location.
While Porsche vehicles did not win the 12 Hour event, they had a great showing. As mentioned, one of the Penske Porsche 963’s finished 3rd in GTP, the Wright Motorsports Porsche GT3R (#120) took a 3rd place podium in the GTD class, and a crowd favorite the AO Racing “REXY,” also a GT3R but in GTD-Pro class, ran in 3rd leading into the last lap of the 12 Hour race but unfortunately finished lower in the class due to an unknown occurrence.
Perhaps the scariest part of the race happened to the #31 Whelen Cadillac while overtaking a GTD car. Pipo Derani, the driver clipped the left front of the #21 SF Corse Ferrari while overtaking on turn 9 of the track. The contact left the Cadillac hurtling toward the tire wall before turn 10, and with a huge impact the #31 came to a rest upside down on the tires. Derani could not exit the car without rescue personnel assistance, and with the incredible quality and safety of modern race machines, he walked away unscathed.
If you are a sports car racing fan, the 12 Hours at Sebring is the place to be in mid-March. Racing is fantastic, and we didn’t even touch on the legendary Green Park, or the race parties located all along the track.
ELECTION and Bylaws Revision Updates
It is almost that time again! Every two years, Gold Coast Region holds elections for its Board of Directors, and this year, December 31 is when the current Board’s terms will end. Currently, Board Members include a President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, four elected Directors and the immediate Past President.
To run for any of the Board Member positions you must:
• Be a member in good standing & agree to run for office.
• Attend at least three (3) Board meetings in the calendar year. Contact any Board member to request the Zoom link to the monthly BOD meetings, generally held the second Thursday of the month at 6:30 p.m.
• Be selected to be on the initial slate by the Nominating Committee – or – be nominated “from the floor” at GCR’s August or September BOD or general meeting by a club member in good standing and meet the criteria above.
Are you interested in running?
For more information, contact Steve Kidd, Nominating Committee Chair, from the contact info listed in the Kassette. More election details will follow in the next issue of the Kassette.

A GCR Bylaws review is underway...........What you should know.
Bylaws are the foundation for all governance and for all the PCA Regional Clubs and are a requirement for any region to receive its charter from the national organization. Chartered regional clubs must comply with national rules, regulations and recommendations. Furthermore, Regional Clubs Bylaws shall not conflict with PCA National Bylaws. PCA National recommends that Regional Bylaws be reviewed at least every 5 years and has provided a template for regions to use when revising bylaws.
GCR last reviewed its bylaws in 2019. During that review, major changes were made to conform with the national template. This could best
be described as an overhaul, with a lot of the new language extracted from the template. Earlier this year, a newly appointed GCR bylaws committee began the task of reviewing the current bylaws and making appropriate and compliant recommendations to address any articles or sections that needed revision. To that end, the committee solicited input from the template, other PCA regions, GCR members and BOD, our own experiences and particularly the PCA National Policy Chair, Amber Door, who was most helpful in pointing out changes that might fly versus those that might raise eyebrows when the whole policy committee reviews the proposed revisions. After any proposed revisions pass muster by PCA Policy committee, the GCR membership will have an opportunity to vote yes or no on the complete package of revisions. As done in the past, we hope to dovetail any bylaws vote with the election of new officers and Directors October 15-November 15.
The 2024 bylaws committee team and their contact information is in the Kassette.
• Steve Kidd, Bylaws committee chair, past GCR president (two times), past Zone 12 representative and past just about everything else over the last 51 years.
• Roger Fabel, Bylaws committee member in 2019 and 2024, past GCR president and Kassette editor for the past 18 years.
• Noemi Sanchez, Bylaws committee member, current GCR director and active in all things GCR.

Luc - Founder of PermagardThese two Porsches, 25 years apart in age, were both treated with Permagard Automotive. Can likely will not. That’s what Permagard can do for your Porsche. It can take a 1998 Carrera S or a 2023 Carrera S, and make them both shine like Permagard acts as a durable, sacrificial layer that is added on top of your original paint to protect 100% of the paint’s thickness over its lifespan. Permagard’s added layer, combined with 100% of your paint’s thickness, is what gives that Permagard is famous for. Our competitors require wet sanding, compounding, and clay barring before their products can be applied. All of these processes remove layers of your original paint, therefore, reducing its thickness. Using our competitors’ products will result in reduced depth of gloss and protection, as the paint you are trying to protect will get thinner and thinner over time. Choose Permagard if you want to durably protect 100% of your depth of gloss. Call our Permagard Headquarters today at (305) 662-5070, to experience the Permagard your beautiful Porsche!

HELP WANTED GCR Autocross Chair
After 20 + years of running the AutoX program, we are looking to retire, most likely sometime in 2025. Dottie and I will be looking to train and mentor the next generation of AutoX chair and registrar. Please contact us if you have an interest in being trained and possibly carrying the AutoX torch in the years to come. Over the next few months, I will cover some of the most pressing situations that future AutoX managers will face. This Month, Equipment-Part 1, which will talk about the AutoX trailer. Next month I’ll discuss timing equipment. Towing and maintenance of the trailer has always fallen on the plate of the AutoX chair which can be time consuming, especially if the chair is also participating as a driver. I would suggest that in the future, alternative ways be explored to deal with the trailer. The trailer contains most of the things needed to run an AutoX!

911 CHRONICLES
Celebrating Porsche Passion: The Inaugural 911 Chronicles Event
Ian Gerada, Event ChairIn a stunning showcase of automotive excellence, the Porsche Club of America’s Gold Coast Region hosted the first-ever 911 Chronicles event at Foreign Affairs Motorsport in Pompano Beach. This landmark gathering, which took place on April 20th, brought together a passionate community of Porsche 911 aficionados, each eager to delve into the rich history and evolving design of one of the world’s most iconic sports cars.
A Decade-by-Decade Showcase
From the swinging ‘60s to the roaring 2020s, each era of the Porsche 911 was brilliantly represented, highlighting the evolution and timeless appeal of this legendary model. The event kicked off with classic marvels like Brian Poulin’s 1969 911 S and Glenn Thomas’ 1967 911 S, representing the ‘60s short wheelbase and long wheelbase respectively.
The ‘70s roared to life with a vibrant orange ‘73 RS and Ivan Holtz’s ‘74 Targa, showcasing the longhood and G body designs that defined a decade of style and performance.
As we moved into the ‘80s, attendees were treated to the sleek lines of a ‘89 G body Silver Speedster and Julio’s ‘89 964 C4, exemplifying the transition to more modern aesthetics and technology.
The ‘90s continued the trend with Brandan Freeman’s 993 and Mitch Weinberg’s mint green 964 RS, each car a testament to the innovative spirit of Porsche during this era. The new millennium brought in Conrad Lima’s ‘03 996 Cab and his ‘08 997 Targa, while the 2010s were well represented by Neil Donavin’s 2011 997 and Ian Gerada’s 2013 997.2 Turbo S.
Capping off the event was the latest in Porsche ingenuity with Peter Fait’s 2021 Heritage from the 992 generation, a model that combines historical cues with cutting-edge technology.
Technical Insights and Celebratory Launch
The event also marked the premiere of the video series “Just Ask Bobby,” which was launched to coincide with the 911 Chronicles. Hosted by Ed Blair, with technical insights from Bobby
Kevin WheelerVarela, the series aims to enrich the Porsche community’s knowledge and appreciation of various technical aspects, starting with the critical topic of Porsche batteries.
Wellness and Relaxation
Thanks to Interactive Medicine U.S., led by Dr. Lauren Fields, attendees enjoyed soothing acupuncture sessions, while Culture Chiropractic, under Dr. Patricia Gomez, provided rejuvenating chiropractic massages. These wellness services were a huge hit among the attendees, adding a relaxing dimension to the day’s highenergy activities.
Acknowledgments
Special thanks go to Foreign Affairs Motorsport for providing a perfect backdrop and additional vehicles for the event. The delightful mimosa bar was sponsored by Bobby & Vanessa Varela along with Ian & Jane Gerada. Appreciation also extends to Kevin Wheeler from KMW Motorsports, who expertly handled all technical inquiries during a panel discussion, providing deeper insights into the quirks and features of various 911 models.
Looking Ahead
As this event has been a monumental success, members should stay tuned for the next event in the PCA Gold Coast Region Chronicle series, set for July at another exciting venue. The 911 Chronicles has set a high bar, and we are committed to continuing this tradition of celebration, education and appreciation of Porsche’s rich heritage.
This event was not just a gathering but a vivid tableau of the Porsche legacy, brought to life by the cars and people who cherish them. Here’s to many more successful gatherings in the future!
In the two previous articles, we discussed the camera, lens, ancillary accessories and fundamentals of photography. We have reached the point to consolidate these elements and establish a starting point for camera settings.
We will begin with the camera menus to start the setup of the various functions of the camera.
1. Set up the white balance to Auto.
2. Our image quality is next. Select either JPEG or RAW or both. If using JPEG make sure that fine or high quality is selected. With JPEG, the images are processed internally by the camera and can be printed or displayed on electronic media without any additional processing required.
Whereas with the RAW selection, the images will need to be processed using the appropriate software. However, using RAW, one will have the most flexibility to enhance the image.
With Raw, select the uncompressed setting for these files. My personal preference is to select RAW and JPEG. Image size is measured in pixels and large should be selected for optimal quality.
3. Next we select the Color Space; either sRGB or Adobe RGB. For videos and JPEG images, select sRGB. Whereas for RAW images, Adobe RGB should be selected.
4. Select the shooting mode, either Shutter or Manual. If Shutter Mode is selected, use auto ISO and set the range from 200 to 1600. This is due to the fact that the aperture will change automatically when changing the shutter. A fixed ISO may be out of range to produce a proper exposed image.
In Manual Mode, one has complete control of shutter speed, aperture and ISO to suit the situation. Each of these functions is independent of the other. Since I use manual mode, the camera settings that I start with are ISO 400, aperture f8-f11 and the shutter speed is selected as appropriate for the situation.
5. Select Continuous Auto Focus. In this mode, the camera will constantly adjust the focus making it easier to track the fast moving subject.
There are various options for the focus area; from single to 3D tracking. Since one is interested in the vehicle to be in focus, the preference is to use dynamic area AF of a 9 point group. 3D tracking is not recommended since the subject does not move erratically (e.g. Tennis player).
6. Exposure metering has various settings from matrix to spot. It is suggested to use spot metering since one is interested in exposing the subject correctly in a mixed light background.
The above settings will be a good starting point. However, adjustments will be required as the lighting conditions change, composition requirements, etc.
For the lens, select auto focus and vibration reduction (if the camera has the vibration reduction do not
turn on this function on the lens). The mode of vibration reduction should be set to normal, not active. Use this if handheld or using a monopod.
Use a zoom lens in the 24-120mm and or 70-200mm range. To achieve more color saturation and glare reduction use a polarizer filter on the lens.
Now that the camera and lens is set up, batteries charged and high speed memory installed, one is ready to head out to the race track.
NOT YET
It is suggested that you obtain a chart showing the track course. This is one of the most useful tools in finding good locations for capturing the type of image one desires.
It is also suggested to visit the racetrack early before the races to familiarize yourself with the physical layout of the track. Move around the track to different locations to visualize the image you are able to capture. Also, obtain a schedule of racing times so you can set up properly at the location before the race starts.
Depending on the location you select, a few minor adjustments should be considered. The vehicle may be moving directly at you, parallel to you or away from you. For a vehicle moving directly at you or away from you, increase the shutter speed to a minimum of 1/2000 and higher to ensure a clear, sharp image.
For subjects moving parallel, try panning. Panning is the technique that requires one to move the camera with the subject. Try to keep the focus point on the front of the vehicle, such as the front light or windshield. Start with a shutter speed of 1/200 or higher to get a few sharp images. As you gain confidence in panning, lower the shutter speed slowly down to 1/30 sec. Panning will provide a sharp image of the vehicle but render the background blurred. This technique conveys a sense of speed. You can use this technique with

a monopod as an additional support for the camera and smooth out the movement as you pan. Panning is not an easy technique to master without much practice. Initially you will have a very low yield of quality images (probably 1 out of 20). Try not to become frustrated and with practice, the yield of quality images will improve.
In conclusion, experiment in adjusting the starting settings to fit various conditions, practice as often as you are able and very quickly you will create a great repertoire of images.
See you on the track.

Christy Spangler, Photo EditorOur Journey with Porsche
Osvaldo and Juliet Paulet submitted this photo of their beautiful 911 Turbo. The Paulets were inspired to join the Gold Coast PCA by their lifelong friends Mario and Lissette Gonzalez who invited them to club events, where they were able to meet wonderful members and experience the club’s culture. Osvaldo and Juliet knew they wanted to be a part of PCA and began to search for their perfect car.
On May 15, 2023, they purchased their first Porsche, a 2014 Rhodium Metallic Silver 911 Turbo. The car was like new, in excellent condition with very low mileage. They are extremely happy with the craftmanship of Porsche and its amazing performance, handling and style. “We fell in love with our Porsche and ever since, we have been enjoying it and participating in many club events and rides,” said Juliet. For the Paulets, the most memorable trip thus far has been to North Carolina with GCR (Little Switzerland) last October. “The beauty of the cars, combined with the gorgeous fall season scenery and accompanied by great friends was truly amazing,” she said. They are looking forward to sharing more memorable moments enjoying their Porsche and the new friendships they have formed, because “it’s not about the cars, it’s about the people.”
Mario Gonzalez took this photo with an iPhone 12 Pro.
