The Spirit of PCA by Jim Stephenson, GCR Member

It is hard to believe the friend ship and help I got from three separate people during car problems some years ago at a Bridgehampton New York track event. “Let me tell you of the spirit of PCA people.” With a new transmission in my ‘72 911S, I miss-shifted from 3rd to 2nd. The awful result was bent valves and an undrivable car, and an expensive repair job. Naturally, I was very upset after spending a good deal of money on rebuilding my car with an almost new ‘89 Carrera 3.2 engine. The old transmission was geared too low for this new engine, and maybe I was careless. But in either event, it was a most unpleasant experience on the first day of a Metro N.Y. track event, and the repair costs enough to make me consider giving up track events. I asked an experienced track guy from the Metro N.Y. PCA Region —- whom I did not know very well, but who drove in the Red Instructor Group with me —- to give me a verdict on whether I had in fact bent the valves. Nylar M. listened a second,

6

confirmed my worst fears and said, “Don’t drive the car.” Then Nylar offered me his Toyota LandCruiser and trailer to drive my car home. “Yeah, take your car home on my rig, and bring it back by Sunday afternoon.” I said I had never driven a trailer, or anything big over the three ferries from Long Island to Rhode Island. He said, “No problem. Just don’t back up.” Then Wayne S. of the Northeast PCA Region, who was my track student on several occasions some years back, offered to take me home Sunday, when I had returned Nylar’s vehicle and trailer. It turned out I did not have any problems with the trailer. Easier than I had thought, and the plan worked perfectly. On arrival home, several neighbors helped me off -load the 911 into my garage. When they asked where I had gotten a tow vehicle and trailer, they were amazed, and very impressed, that I had just been loaned an expensive rig as a favor. Two, weeks later, at home one night I got a call from Dave K. of the Northeast PCA Region. Dave

Jun 2016

had also been my student some five years before at both Watkins Glen and Bridgehampton, and we had continued to carry on a friendship on the occasional track events we both happened to attend. Dave said, “I know you were very upset by bending your valves, but I don’t want to see you stop track events under that kind of a cloud. Why don’t you come with me to the last NNJR PCA Region Bridgehampton event and drive my car?” He said he would be driving in the Black Group (for advanced drivers) and I could drive his car in the Red Instructor Group. He said he had already called NNJR and confirmed there was a need for another instructor in the Red Group. I was overwhelmed by his offer. “Oh, that’s much too nice of you. Driving someone else’s car is risky, especially since I just miss-shifted my own car.” Dave insisted it was Okay, a serious invitation, and that he knew enough to trust my driving skills. Later, my wife was also impressed by such an offer. She suggested I go, but not drive his car. (At one time, she had an accident while driving someone else’s car on the Street.) As it turns out, I was not be able to go, because of a family visit. Otherwise, I would instruct, enjoy the weekend, but perhaps not drive Dave’s car, if my wife’s good sense prevailed. Are these offers by PCA people unbelievable? “These are examples of a rare attitude and friendship that make PCA special.” And, I try to tell every Porsche owner who is not a PCA member that not joining our club means really missing something.

When was the last time you had breakfast with fellow PCA Members? We all meet the 1st Saturday of every month for Porsches and Pancakes at one of our (5) locations throughout our region as far north as Stuart all the way down to South Miami. Each of the locations averages about 30-35 members and it’s a lot of fun… I started this idea a few years back and it’s taken off so thank you to all the volunteers who help us every month. I look forward to meeting new members and catching up with existing members every month. You will find a lot of our board members, past members, and of course our long standing members who have supported our club throughout the years. If you have never been, here is chance especially in the upcoming summer months. Hope to meet you all at the next event.

Z

ration now OPEN!

9am – 12pm, join your fellow members learning how to control your Porsche in a safe manner at high speeds with a qualified in-car instructor. At this event you will learn proper driving techniques that will transfer over to your everyday commutes and it will be a lot of fun. Register on www.clubregistration.net The following weekend on Saturday 7/23, we will be doing a fun drive/ stay over through the back roads of the everglades all the up to Port Charlotte. For those members who have driven with me through the back country roads, you all know how much fun it is and we will be joining our friends from Citrus Region for the stay over. After that, Zone 12 will be hosting a tour of the Larry Wilson Collection on Saturday 7/30. If you have not seen or heard of this Porsche collection, it’s up there with the Collier, Gunnar and Brumos collections. This event will be limited to 100 members only. This collection is located near Palm Beach International Raceway, at the north end of Palm Beach County. Here is a question for you all…

Time flies when you are having fun, we are halfway through the year and our region still has a lot of fun left in the tank. I just got back from our Annual Zonefest holiday weekend, it was a lot of fun and I can’t wait to go next year. Thank you for our very own ZoneRep Steve Kidd and his wife Dottie for all their hard work along with all the volunteers from all the regions. It was great to see our friends from other regions and share the fun with them all. I hope you all can make it next year Zonefest. elcome to your newsletter that has evolved into a magazine. We are very fortunate to have the high level of advertisers in our region that support our monthly publication. Many PCA regions are not at our level and have had to reduce pages, monthly issues, and some have stopped publishing a printed edition and replaced with a digital edition. Our policy is to provide both print and digital formats. Our advertises would not continue theirs ads if they were not receiving an ROI that added value to their business. Please use our advertisers for your business needs and thank them for their support. We receive many calls about vendor ads. The types of ads with price and specs are on page 36. Please note that ads are

prepaid and their may be a waiting time so that we are able to maintain our ad to content ratio. Summer is here and our GCR activities have been in full swing. We have some great articles about the Elliott museum and Spring Fling events. We also have many great articles from and about our members for your reading pleasure. Don’t forget to share your Porsche adventures as you travel this summer in the form of a “From the Members” article. The Elliott museum tour was very interesting. Sterling Elliott and his son Harmon invented a wide variety of items that benefited the automotive industry with over 200 patents awarded to them. Having a private tour was helpful as we learned

about the rich history behind the Elliotts and the collection in their museum. We are very lucky to have tours to several south Florida automotive collections. Lunch on the beach in our own dinning room was a great way for our group to finish a perfect day. Thanks to Jerry Daily who always designs an “E” ticket event. I hope you were able to attend our multi regional Zonefest event in Sebring. Look for full coverage of the event along with the competition results. If you are new to DE check out a special event for first time DE students on page 36. All of our programs are first class but our chairs are always trying to fine tune the program to meet the needs of our members. Enjoy your Porsche, Roger

Elliott Museum Tour and Dine by Jerry Daily

We could not have had a more beautiful day for the Elliot Museum event, around 80 degrees and low humidity, a perfect day for driving a Porsche. People started arriving around 9:30, and Roger and Sherry Fabel were there to greet them and start the check-in and wavier signing procedures. Thank you Roger and Sherry! We were assigned a very interesting and knowledgeable docent who started us off with some very rare two, three and four wheel cycles designed and built by the Elliot family. We then moved over to a 1903 Stanley Steamer, Electric Salon car and an early Cadillac. The main room is full of interesting cars, motor cycles, Chris Craft boats etc., but the main attraction is the robotic system that brings down one car at a time and slides it into a turntable and rotates several times before replacing it and

10

Die Porsche

bringing down the next one. There are three floors of cars so you could spend hours sitting on the 57 Chevy trunk sofa to see them all. They also have a Cunningham which is interesting due to the fact that they were built by Briggs Cunningham in West Palm Beach, while this is not a race car he has a very interesting racing history. They also have a major baseball exhibit, Treasure Coast History and several other interesting exhibits. A great way to spend an afternoon. We then caravanned a few miles north to Pietro’s on the Ocean Restaurant. We were greeted by a very friendly and welcoming staff who escorted us to a private section of the restaurant with a beautiful ocean view. Our lunch choices were beef tenderloin sliders, lobster and crab cake sandwich, chicken Cobb salad or Salmon on salad. It was a very enjoyable day…….

Murder and the $m car Reprint from an article in a San Francisco newspaper . Car found by GCR member IF businessman Leon Paria were alive today, he would have likely been the 62year-old owner of a piece of automotive history, worth more than $10 million. Instead, he became a murder statistic. Paria left home one morning in October of 2002, and never brought back the ingredients for the Sunday meal planned with his wife and two infant daughters. His Toyota Rav 4 was found abandoned in Sangre Grande the next day. His remains were found in the bushes outside of the town, the next month. He died in a year when kidnapping for ransom became a lucrative enterprise in Trinidad. It was also the year when the murder count reached a then outrageously high 171. If we only knew how much worse it would get. As with the killings now, Paria’s death was never solved, despite the best efforts of widowed wife Carol Paria. For years she tried to get the homicide bureau to continue digging for information leading to an arrest, indictment, prosecution, justice. It never happened. The homicide “unsolved” rate in this pretend paradise is about nine out of ten. Fourteen years later, Carol continues to operate the business she started with her husband, an auto air-conditioning service

14

shop in San Fernando. Their children have grown up and made their own lives. She still lives at the family home in Santa Cruz from which Leon Paria left that day, to come back in a coffin six weeks later. Since that 2002 murder, one of Leon Paria’s prized possessions, a 1973 model Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7, had been parked in the garage of that house, a piece of German engineering defying the island’s tropical weather. This car is now becoming world famous. In 1978, that Porsche was bought in England by a Trinidadian businessman and shipped to the island. And, according to

Kassette |

Jun 2016

the certified copy, it was sold in 1989 and ended up in Paria’s hands four years later. Carol Paria recalled when it was purchased by her husband. “He just loved buying these vehicles. It was his passion. And he liked special cars (Pontiac Trans Am, Benz 380 SEL). I am not sure how he found the Porsche. He was not one to discuss things like this with me. I only knew of him buying the car after the fact. When he got it, it was parked up, not functioning. He said it was in some tall grass in Trincity. He did a lot of work to restore it, dashboard, interior, painting, and mechanical things.” And then it was back on the road. Carol remembers the car winning “best of show” at a car show in Chaguanas. How much Paria paid for the car, his wife never knew. It wasn’t something he dis cussed. One day, while heading along the highway, the engine began failing and Leon Paria had to nurse the car home. He never got around to doing the repairs, and never drove it again. And in the garage it remained, long after Paria’s death. For Carol, it was a bold reminder of her husband and what he loved. Meanwhile, Carol kept calling the po lice officers who were supposedly investigating the case. “Up to five years after Leon died, I kept in contact, asking what was the latest? What did they find out. They always had a story, always had an excuse.

So I stopped calling. They were not interested.” But people were interested in that purple Porsche. Carol Paria said she got many offers for the Porsche, one for $20,000. But she knew it was a collector’s item worth a lot of money. So when an American came calling last year, persistent and offering much, much more, the Parias decided to sell. The vehicle, registration PY-5364, was sent off to Florida, and is now back in the UK. Another piece of Leon Paria gone. But Carol Paria says she will never forget. “After his death, my daughters strug gled. This was not easy. Although this will make it 14 years, I think of him almost every day, because this was such a huge loss, of course. This (article) may be a reminder to people. I want people to remember what was taken from us. If he was alive ... things would have been much different.” One of a kind Even the Parias may have underesti mated the pedigree of the Porsche. The vehicle is now being deified by Porsche enthusiasts in the United Kingdom, and the subject of a story on the BBC’s Top Gear website. For the Porsche groupies, only 16 ‘Royal Purple’ RS 2.7 Touring Carreras were ever built, and seven were right-handdrive. Paria’s car was the very last one to be produced. Untouched, its value is upwards of 500,000 pounds, according to the experts. After restoration, it is expected to fetch more than one mil lion pounds. Credit for finding the rare car goes to Porsche specialist Autofarm, which disclosed details of the find last week. According to Autofarm, despite having received a number of l 980sstyle cosmetic modifications over its life in Trinidad, including the rear wing, alloy wheels, tinted windows and after-market seats and steering whe􀀵I. Paria’s Porsche was found to be an original survivor of the 94 RHD UK Tourings produced. “Peel off these latter-day accoutre ments and Autofarm has discovered a ‘matching numbers’ RS 2. 7 with the added kudos of being the last RHD to leave the factory. With so many RS ending up in competition, cars

with a documented history and retaining their core originality are extremely rare,” Autofarm raved. “The RS 2.7 is now highly revered by collectors and enthusiasts,” says Auto farm’s Josh Sadler, who freighted the 911 back from Florida. “Having worked and raced these cars since they were new and tracked a fair few over their lives, we are often contact ed about cars, either for sale, or for help with sourcing or checking if they are gen uine specification. A good contact, Rikard Asbjornsen in the US, alerted us to this car. As is often the case, especially given the circumstances of the former owner’s demise, the family was understandably

Jun 2016

|

cautious about enquiries ... Eventually Rikard was able to agree a deal with the daughter and got the car back to Florida and I acquired it from him there.” According to Autofarm, plans for the car remain fluid with Sadler debating to either sell, restore, or get it running again and use it ‘as is’. “The modifications we now view as tasteless, but they do tell the tale of the car. It has led a remarkable life and the murder of its owner meant it was left undisturbed for a considerable time. I’m sure it will be worth a lot more if restored, but cars are all about their owners and I’ve fallen for the story of this one,” said Sadler. More details to follow in our July issue.

GCR Spring Fling Picnic There were about 125 -150 members for this picnic. Not as many as prior picnics though. My belief is the weather factor. There were quite a few reports of bad weather and a chance of 60% rain. However, with the exception of very minor drizzling when we arrived at 8am to setup, the weather was perfect, a little chill in the air as a cold front pushed through. This year we were very fortunate to have DJ Vance playing for us. This is a 10 year old young man who is on the top of his game and did a spectacular job. Thanks to his parents, Scott and Cheryl for allowing him to play at the event. He and his dad played the entire day for us and kept us moving for the entire picnic. Look out for him at many more of our events.

PCA-GCR is built by volunteers like you who always go beyond the call of duty. Thank you all. by Beena Kohly, social chair Concours which is Memorial Weekend. So it was decided to just have a relaxing picnic with no stress and no one trying to get his/her car ready for judging. Everyone just came out, mingled, ate and drank. It’s not usual to have this type of picnic, so next year, we may go back to at least a people’s choice. Special thanks to Jake Kooser and Paul Raben who even came to our house to help us with the coolers loading them on/off Ed’s truck… You guys rock!! As always, there was a ton of food and drinks and at the end of the day those who stayed behind until the very end, took all the left overs home. What a fun and relaxing day….

Your Porsche On A Racetrack…….It’s Safe…….Come Play! By Stuart Jarkowski, DE Chair We all purchased our Porsches for slightly different reasons but we ALL purchased them for the performance. This is what brings us together. The history and culture of all things Porsche is continually refined on the racetrack. So why not experience the thrill of taking your own Porsche on the track! Most of us have probably have exceeded the speed limit from time to time but only within reason for fear of the consequences. Just imagine having the chance to really let it loose in a totally safe and controlled track experience with your own instructor to guide you through the day. Well, you have that opportunity at a Gold Coast PCA High Performance Drivers Education (DE) event. I have never seen someone leave without a big smile. Come out and play! Safety is our highest priority, followed by having fun. None of us would consider car damage or injury as having fun, so we take great precautions to ensure a safe event. We have rules that we enforce to keep it safe. Our emphasis on safety starts even before we arrive at the track, by inspecting and preparing the car

and driver. Classroom Training: We begin the day with a formal 45-minute classroom training on High Performance Driving and fundamentals. Your Own Personal Instructor: This is the best part. You will have your own personal instructor work with you throughout the day. DE IS NOT RACING. DE IS NOT A DEMOLITION DERBY FOR PORSCHES. In DE we acquire the knowledge and develop the skills needed to drive at high speed, for the enjoyment of it. That’s the real goal - to have high speed fun - no trophies or prizes, just enjoyment. It’s simple, if we see anyone doing anything unsafe they will be called into the pits and we will have a serious discussion. If it happens again, they could potentially be asked to sit out the remainder of the session. Safety is the first priority. Gold Coast PCA is proud of our safety record and we plan to keep it that way. We all want to have fun, be safe and drive our Porsches home in one piece. Whether you’re a first-timer, a regular or haven’t been on the track in a while,

we would love to have you join us for an upcoming DE. Next Steps: Call or Email Stuart Jarkowski – DE Chair at 561-558-5654 or DEChair@ goldcoastregion.org to learn more about the DE Program. REQUIREMENTS: 1. Register on www.ClubRegistration.net 2. SA 2010 or newer Helmet - You can buy your own helmet for around $200 or you may have a friend who has a helmet you can borrow. We may also have a few loaners - first come first served. 3. Tech Inspection - This is a simple inspection to make sure your car is safe for a day at the track. Print a copy of the Tech Inspection Form and bring it with you to the Tech Inspection shop. They will fill it out. The Tech Form can be found on the Gold Coast website along with a list of authorized Tech Inspection shops. The Tech Inspection is usually free of charge as the intention is to keep everyone safe.

Tech Corner : The World is Flat! Article by Pedro P. Bonilla, Tech Editor

In 1492 Christopher Columbus sailed west from Europe to what many considered the edge of the world, but he didn’t fall off.

Neither did Ferdinand Magellan some 27 years later when he set off to circumnavigate the world and although he died before finishing, his crew sailed on and proved that it was round. That belief was held for another 429 years until another Ferdinand set out to prove Magellan and his crew wrong. That other Ferdinand was Herr Porsche who in 1948 in the small Austrian town of Gmund, put a flat-4 engine in the middle of the now legendary Porsche 356 #1. From that day on ...

But, what is a flat engine and more importantly why is it flat? A flat engine, or a horizontally opposed engine has its cylinders arranged horizontally in 2 banks therefore making it literally flat, as compared to the more common “V” or “vertical inline” types of engines. The flat engine layout has several advantages for a sports car over the conventional designs: • It occupies less vertical space allowing the car to have a lower profile • It can be placed lower in the car thus lowering the center of gravity • It is a very balanced (vibration-free) design because of the opposing motion • It is easier to “air” cool • It has lower rotational inertia (less weight on the crank) and less power loss Initially, Herr Porsche used flat-fours, borrowed from Volkswagen (also his design) and put them into the 356 and then into the 912 models. But, in 1963 Porsche decided that his cars needed more power so the first flat-six went into the now iconic 911.

It started out as a 2.0 liter, normally aspirated, air-cooled engine, which went through a myriad of changes, modifications and improvements throughout the years. On some of those flat-6s, stating in 1975, Porsche also installed turbochargers. In 1996 Porsches’s flat-6 engine got water-cooled and went into their brand new mid-engined platform, the 986 Boxster, as a 2.5 liter, normally aspirated power plant. In 1999 a 3.4 liter version of that engine went into the first water-cooled 911, even though the previous two platforms of the air cooled 911s had sported displacements of 3.6 liters (964 and 993). Flat-6s with 3.8 liters were used in some of the “S” platforms, and on some high-performance models (997 GT3 RSR and 997 GT3 Cup) the displacement eventually went as high as 4.0 liters which is what the factory claims is the largest displacement possible while maintaining optimum efficiency, power output and ease of cooling.
 Aside from the flat-4 and flat-6 engines Porsche also built several other flat power plants, exclusively for racing: • 1.5L and 2.0L flat-8 in the 718 (1961 and 1962) • • 2.0L and 2.2L flat-8 in the 907 (1967) • • 3.0L flat 8 in the 908 (1968) • • 4.5L flat-12 in the 917 (1969) • • 5.0L flat-12 in the 917 (1970) • • 5.4L flat-12 Twin-Turbo in the 1973 Can-Am 917/30 with the following specs: • 1,580 HP • 0-60 mph in 2.1 seconds • 0-100 in 3.9 seconds • 0-200 in 13.4 seconds • Top speed in excess of 240 mph And even though Porsche made earth-shattering changes for 2017 by announcing that it was eliminating the normally-aspirated flat-6 engines in both the Boxster and Cayman platforms and exclusively offering 4-cylinder [gasp!] turbocharged engines ...

... at least they’re keeping them flat! ...

... and now we wonder what will they sound like? In order to make them sound more like a Porsche and less like a Subaru Sti flat-4, Porsche amplifies the sound by using a resonator and an electric valve which pumps the sound into the cabin. At least it’s real sound, albeit amplified, and not a fake engine sound track through the car’s speakers as some other manufacturers such as VW with the GTI and BMW with the M5 have done :(

These new blown flat-4s are being offered with gobs of power and torque, but ... ... The Symphony in flat-6 will be missed.

Happy Porsche’ing, Pedro

Rest in Peace, flat-6.

PCA Membership by Paul Raben, Membership Chair

W

hy am I a member of PCA ? I am going to explain why you should be an active member of PCA Gold Coast Region. The other day my wife, Peggy, and I went up to Melborne to attend an event that Space Coast Region was hosting, and that I was invited to. It was “Turbo Mayhem” and because we own a 1986 930 we decide to make the 2 ½ hour drive up to the event. Now we made the drive for two reasons, one because we like driving the “turbo” and two being the membership chair of our club I am interested in what other clubs are doing for their members. This event was their second one strictly for turbos, but this time instead of being for 930’s this event was open to any turbocharged Porsche. As we are driving and getting close we start to smell rotten eggs. My first reaction is that someone’s catalytic converter is going bad and that was what we were smelling. We kept going and arrived at the event at Breitwerks the host and sponsor, and they had us park in with the other 930’s. Everyone greeted us and made us feel like part of the group, even though we showed up late and our car stunk! Well we popped the trunk open and the battery was hissing and venting a foul smelling gas which we felt was a great way to make an entrance. Immediately members of the club came over to help with suggestions and possible solutions. In the meantime we just let the car cool down and enjoy the event. There was a stunning early European slant nose, an American slant nose, some 993 turbo’s and of course the 991, 996, 997, 983, 964 turbos and all the rest were 930’s. It was a really nice event with about 50 cars there and all the shops were open and there were t-shirts and stickers and prizes and all the trimming for a really good event. While Peggy and I were enjoying the event some of the members were working to help fix our car and try to figure out why this happened because they feared if we drove home there was a chance the battery, being so hot, would explode. Now here is the part where you learn what it means to be a member of PCA. The owner of Breitwerks, the sponsor of the show, along with others that were giving advice worked on our car to make sure we would make it home. Most of the members we spoke to were very appreciative that we would make the drive from Fort Lauderdale to their event. We both felt really welcomed to their club’s event. Jason from Breitwerks gave us a battery, would NOT accept money for it and installed it in that car so that we could get home. This is what being a PCA member is all about, it is a club of caring and helpful enthusiasts that enjoy their cars, other peoples cars and helping people when they need help. If you have the chance to attend our events, other clubs’ events and participate in the club you will be surprised how much enjoyment you will get from being a member of the best car club in the world. As a footnote, this is the second time our car has conveniently broken down in the right place, once at Ft Meyers Porsche dealer, and this time and a Porsche repair shop. It is all about planning! So get out there, come out to our events, participate, volunteer, meet the members and enjoy the club, you don’t know what you are missing.
