Postponed events

President’s Corner Steve Kidd - President

Due to the novel Coronavirus and the world-wide pandemic, automotive events around the country have been postponed or canceled, and events held by and/or related to Porsche Club of America are no exception. Below is a list of Gold Coast Region and major PCA events with their current statuses. Our team will update event status as more information becomes available. GCR hosted events are in Italic . GCR AutoX May 16 @ Sebring Suncoast Region DE May 16 & 17 Zonefest Memorial day weekend Porsche Parade: June 21-27, 2020 Upcoming tentative events still on the schedule or rescheduled from an earlier date. Sign up on Club Registration. GCR Drive & Overnight-er to Sanibel August 22-23 GCR New Member Pot Luck picnic & PCA Junior youth judging event Sept 26@ Tradewinds Park North GCR Road trip to the Mountains of North Carolina Oct 20-25. GCR Porsches by the bay ...Our biggest concours ! November 14 While we wait for the right time to again participate in the activities we love, please consider some of the online options to stay in touch with your innermost Porsche soul.....Please check your e-mails for invitations & e-brake news, as well as Regional and National websites. Virtual Happy hours...A cool substitute for our Thursday Social & Porsche and Pancakes Tech Tactics live ...A great way to see how to do basic maintenance and upgrades ...Geared for the do-it -yourself crowd.

Rennbow....Like color.?..check this out Sim Racing...A must for the speed freaks Members making a difference ….One of my favorites...See what other regions and individuals are doing to help others. Locally, I know some of you are helping thru your church or civic group with things like food drives. Others, like Dottie Kidd dusted off her 55 year old sewing machine and helped make masks for a local service organization’s support to front line workers. While I’ll let you go to the PCA website and read all the posts, here are two that are really unique. North Country Region: Vice President Karl Leinsing, who is also the president of a small medical device company, says “We halted normal business and work on our Porsche race car so that my family could make face shields for our local hospital. We made over 100 face shields in our first day and delivered them to four hospitals. We are also working on getting N95 masks from our supplier and should get a shipment this week. A video of our efforts is below and provides instructions for others to do the same. Pictures of our deliveries to hospitals is on our Facebook page. All are donated free of charge to the hospitals, fire departments, police, and EMS personnel.” Coastal Empire Region has donated to Roebling Road Raceway to help the track and its corner workers survive the COVID-19 pandemic. Audrey Woodman says, “With the onslaught of COVID-19, most PCA regions have seen their activities brought to a halt. This has had a devastating impact on local businesses,

as well as many supporters who rely on PCA events for their livelihood.” Coastal Empire Region (covering the coasts of southern South Carolina and northern Georgia) has spearheaded a regional effort to help corner workers at Roebling Road Raceway in Bloomingdale, Georgia. Various PCA regions host approximately nine weekend DEs at Roebling each year, of which three are hosted by Coastal Empire Region. Although the track has not been shut down entirely, it is limited to a 5-car test and tune, which drastically decreases the employment opportunities for corner workers. Regional DE chair David Selvig started a GoFundMe page (https://www. gofundme.com/f/rrr-workers(link is external)) and the region committed to match the first $2,000. Their neighbors from Florida Citrus and Ocmulgee Regions have also generously contributed sizable amounts to the effort. Audrey reports, “In six days, we have raised $13,260 and $8,000 has already been distributed to the track workers to help make ends meet. Our weekends would not happen without this crew, and their smiles and waves make our track feel like a second home. While we all hope that we are not the car that makes the flags wave, we are grateful for the flaggers who work rain or shine to keep us safe. We aim to inspire other regions to give back to their own local track family, and we hope to see the green flag waving soon!” Do you have an idea to help out like the above examples...and are you willing to lead this effort? If so give me a call and let’s see what we can do to get your idea off the ground. Stay Safe ….Steve

Editor’s Notes Another issue with our events on hold. I hope you are finding ways to enjoy your Porsche while we get back to a new normal. Many members have been participating in different online virtual get together which you should have received an e-mail about from our membership chair. One thing that is gaining in popularity is SIM Racing. You can experience the track without leaving your house. Suncoast Region has shared a great article about the new sport that I hope will give you more in site to

Roger Fabel- Editor

this type of racing. For those of you that aren’t ready to jump in at that level there are other options such as the Microsoft X Box that has many racing games where you can pick your car and track. If you are new to DE I would highly recommend this for basic training and also experienced solo drivers. We are hoping that our events will be opening back this month with the much awaited Homestead DE event the first weekend of June. At the time of writing the track is planning on reopening for

our event for solo drivers and only drivers in the car per PCA guidelines as we startup after the virus shutdown. The track will let us know the beginning of the month. Our DE program which was the PCA standard benchmark needs your help to get the program back on the track. Lets hope we can restart the program. I hope you have enjoyed the articles from our members and other PCA writers. If you enjoy sharing your stories please send them in.

I Raced a 911 RSR at Le Mans on iRacing By Paul Bienick Back in the March, 2017, Profile issue, I gave a brief overview of the iRacing service and wrote of exciting times for Porsche sim racers, as iRacing was just about to release their first Porsche-branded race car: the 911 GT3 Cup. Since then, there have been several developments in iRacing relevant to us PCA members and Porschephiles. Perhaps the most exciting development is the introduction of the PCA Sim Racing Series, the very first official PCAsanctioned sim racing series exclusively

Every Friday night for iRacing; then on another day I was watch8 weeks, PCA members from around the ing iRacing on TV via YouTube, when country competed for the championship someone commented that they thought in the 911 GT3 Cup car. Each race was it was real. The video, iRacing replay 45 minutes long and was broadcast and results from all 8 races are still live on YouTube with professional available on http://www.pcasimracbroadcasters. If you’ve never seen a ing.org/, and it looks like PCA is sim race with live broadcasters, you currently hinting at an upcoming To watch the might mistake it for a real-world event with a photo of the 911 RSR whole race, scan race! an amazing car in the real world, the 919 is not my favorite to drive. Forward visibility is poor, and low downforce setups are a handful. But since this car has been retired in the real world, it’s great to know that it will continue to live on in the virtual world, battling against the venerable Audi R18. More recently, iRacing released the midengined Porsche 911 RSR, my favorite of all the Porsches on the service. This car currently runs in the iRacing IMSA Sportscar Championship series alongside the Ford GT, the Ferrari 488 GTE, and the recently released BMW M8 GTE, and it’s a blast to drive. I recently spent many hours in this car as I prepared for and participated in the iRacing 24 Hours of Le Mans, which was held on June 1-2. I raced the Ford GT in this event for the first time back in 2017, and it was an epic experience. Since then, iRacing added proper day/night transitions to the service which adds to the realism and difficulty, and as I drove the RSR through sunset into the early nighttime hours, I could swear I could smell the trackside grills firing up. (Maybe it was just my wife preparing dinner). Continued on page 16

Growing up here in the states, Le Mans coverage was virtually non-existent, so it always had a mysterious, magical quality about it. Now here we are in 2019 with the ability to drive this track in a simulated environment in real-time racing against people from all over the world. What a great time to be alive! For this year’s event, I was thankful to find a well-organized team that was comprised of two drivers from the west coast, one in the U.K., and a young lady in New Zealand. Quite the globe-spanning team! Planning and scheduling stints for drivers from around the world in different time zones is a challenging task, so thankfully we were able to utilize a sophisticated spreadsheet (developed by one of my teammates) to keep track of actual stint times that allowed all of us to keep the schedule updated as the race unfolded. We started in 22nd out of 55 cars with a goal of finishing in the top 10. We worked our way up to 8th by the time I went to bed around midnight. I set my alarm for 5:00 a.m. and awoke to 40-plus messages on Discord (an app we used for team communications). I walked over to the rig and noticed that Bea, our driver from New Zealand, was still in the car, and as I announced my online presence the first thing she said was: “Paul, help us!!” Turns out that Isaac, our driver in the U.K., had some sort of computer issue that prevented him from doing his triple stint. So I got in the car earlier than expected for one stint, turned the car back over to Bea for another stint, and then did my previously scheduled double-stint to finish the race. This turned out to be a poor decision because it cost us an extra 30s in the pits to do the extra driver change. (At that early morning hour, my brain was thinking about driving and not race strategy.) This was critical because it prevented us from reaching our goal of finishing in the top 10. On my last stint, I was in 10th place with a 40s lead on the 11th-place car and gaining on him, but I had to do a splash and dash for some fuel. I exited the pits in 11th place only 6s behind 10th! I had him in my sites during the final laps and was gaining on him every lap, but, sadly, we ran out of time and crossed the finish line 4s behind in 11th. Still, though, it was another epic experience and I can’t wait to do it again. It may only be virtual cars in a virtual environment, but the adrenaline rush, the heart pounding, the need to focus for long

16

Die Porsche

periods of time, the driving techniques, the camaraderie and the emotions are all very real. You may not ever get to experience driving a Porsche GT3 Cup car, or the fabulous Porsche 911 RSR, or the mind-bending performance of the Porsche 919 Hybrid prototype, but you can get as close as possible to not only driving them, but racing them against other drivers from around the world in real time in the virtual world of iRacing.

The author would like to add that there are other fine alternatives to the iRacing service, but he only has time for one! Also, feel free to contact him at paul@bienick. com if you have any questions or comments.

Gold Coast Region would like to thank Norm Sippel editor of the Suncoast Profile and writer Paul Bienick for sharing this great article. With the current virus condition many PCA members are looking for options to race their Porsches. Roger Fabel, editor.

The WeatherTech® International Challenge with Brian Redman presented by Hawk at Road America in Elkhart Lake Wisconsin - A Classic Family Get Together by Christy Spangler Since this COVID-19 virus has interrupted the Gold Coast Region’s usually very busy spring schedule, I thought I would write up a photo essay recap of this trip I took to Wisconsin last July to see my brother and cousins race at Road America. The WeatherTech® International Challenge with Brian Redman is one of the largest vintage racing events in the US that takes place in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. My uncle, Rick Davis and cousins, Eric and Brian who live near there have been racing in this event for many years and my brother, Russell McMullan, would often join them to help out during the event. When Russell mentioned he was going up again he asked if I wanted to join him. The dates were July 18-21, 2019 which was the same timeframe as the Porsche Parade in Boca Raton so I hesitated on an answer. When he said that he would be racing this time - that sealed the deal and I was on my way.

My brother, uncle & cousins have been into cars and racing pretty much their whole lives. It definitely runs in the family with my little cousins into go kart racing. On Tuesday, they had a go-kart race that was located at the Road America go-kart track. It was cool to watch them race. They are quite competitive.

Wednesday was load in day at the track. The trailers and pit were set up in a nice park like setting. Once we got settled in, we cranked up the golf carts and I got a nice tour of the 4.1 mile track.

I rented a pick up truck, a Ford F-150, the biggest vehicle I’ve ever driven. It came in handy since my cousins commandeered it to haul one of the racing trailers. Since they offered my uncle’s new Alpha Romeo Giulia with the 550 horsepower Ferrari engine to get around in, I happily made the sacrifice.

Courier #15, and our family friend, Austin Schmidt, raced his 1976 Alfa Romeo Spider #177. I managed to capture all of them in a photo during one of the sessions. The #25 that is also in this photo is a 1963 Elva MK VII.

Thursday – Saturday were qualifying, and practice runs for the main event on Sunday. Our team all ran in the same group, the Vintage Production Sedans. My brother, Russell, raced his 1992 Nissan Sentra SE-R #62 that he hauled to Wisconsin from Orlando, Florida. Cousin Eric raced his 1965 Alfa Romeo Giulia Spider #42, cousin Brian raced his 1962 Elva

Kassette | Jun 2020

On Friday, Brian surprised me with a track touring session that Road America offered during the afternoon breaks and lent my uncle’s 2002 Porsche 996 for the tour. Even though there were restrictions with the group drive, it was still a lot of fun to see the track from the driver’s viewpoint. I am wearing the orange vest because I was granted media access to photograph our team.

Friday night was one of the highlights of the weekend with the Race Car Parade to Elkhart Lake. Racers participating in the parade line up the cars at the track and do a parade into the town of Elkhart Lake and park on the main street in downtown. It seems like the whole town comes out for

this event. In the early 1950’s sports car races were held in the streets of Elkhart Lake and when racing on public roads was banned, the Road America track was built and opened in 1955.

On Saturday morning, I took a drive around in my golf cart to go see the Porsche Park in the racetrack. It is a really nice area by turn 1 that is sponsored by the PCA Milwaukee and Fox Valley Regions. They have a great view of the cars coming down the straight and going into turn 1.

Later on Saturday, by the time it was our team’s turn to run the track, it had been raining. With my media access, I was able to go to the roof of the VIP/Media Tower and captured this cool photo of my brother crossing the finish line with rooster tails. Since the weather worsened, the afternoon sessions were cancelled so we all headed to my aunt & uncle’s hotel room to watch racing videos they recorded with their go pro cameras in their cars and have dinner.

From Can-Ams to formula cars to GT series cars, pre-war cars, and plenty of Porsches, The WeatherTech® International Challenge with Brian Redman was a fantastic event. I really enjoyed watching the different vintage classes compete and see the different racing styles. I recognized some of the race cars from attending the 24 Hours at Daytona over the years. I hope to join my family at this event in the future. I took so many photos that it was difficult picking out a few for this article-I hope you enjoy them. Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin is a beautiful part of the country and I would highly recommend seeing a race at this Road America track. To learn more about this event and Road America: https://www.roadamerica.com.

Sunday was the final race and unfortunately due to an accident, our team’s session was cut short but deemed a success since everyone had a great time and the four cars were in one piece. After that, it was time to take the group photos, pack up and head home.

Brand Loyalty by RL Turner What every company spends untold dollars working to create. They build the essence of their brand around it. Really, they love this concept. Why? Big profits. It can be a status symbols like Louis Vuitton or Tory Burch or something simple like your basic “double no-whip-no-foam, skinny pumpkin latte” from Starbucks that you always order. We love what we love. So how far does brand loyalty take us? Here’s one example: How about the never ending Ford versus Chevy or Chevy versus Mopar battle and all the possible permutations therein? There are some folks that swear by Toyota or Honda and will buy nothing else (members of my own family fall into one of these two camps). Ever try having an automotive conversation with any of these people? Take a Ford guy for instance: “Don’t even get me talking about Chevy, because you know, those cars suck.” Personally I find those people very open minded, as long as you stick to how great Ford products and how sucky Chevy products are, that is. This is just an example, I’m not picking on anyone here. Not me. So do German cars fall into this brand loyalty trap? Heck yes! BMW guys? Check. Mercedes guys? Check. Audi guys? Ah, I think you get it—check please! And Porsche guys? Well we are probably the worst, at least when it comes to brand die heart’edness. Come on, as a group we are so loyal to our brand we even get into sub categories of brand fanaticism – as in aircooled versus water pumpers or all fifty-three ‘924’ guys versus everyone else. So does that apply to you? Hmmm. You are reading this in a Porsche Club magazine right? And me? What do you think? Hate to pigeon hole myself into any particular category, but I gotta be honest with myself here; yes I am a Porsche-brand geek. Says so right on the shirt I am wearing right now, writing this piece: Drivers Education February 2003, Maverick Region PCA. OK, maybe the shirt is a bit threadbare but I love it. Yeah, guilty as charged. My own Porsche adventure started early, a really terrible (or terribly rusted) 914 I drove in college. It was an awful car and taken as a singular ownership event, should have scared most people (namely me) away from the Porsche brand forever. But then something magic happened. It was 1990, I was recently married. So one Saturday morning, as me and my bride read the local newspapers—just to set the stage here, my wife loves to read the paper cover to cover, she still does—she looked up from her paper and asked: “Is $14,000 for a 1987 Porsche 944S with low miles a good deal?” (Remember – this is 1990 money we are talking about here) I put down my section of the paper. She had just totally captured my attention. Brand loyalty was about to strike again! And a rather large rabbit hole had just magically popped into existence, right in the very fabric of my living room. Brand loyalty had just made it presence felt in the Turner household big time. And on that exhaust note, see you next time. RL Turner is the author of The Driver, a series of action adventure novels, available in both print and ebook on Amazon (more info at www.thedriver-series.com). Having owned a dozen Porsches and driven hundreds of laps on racetracks throughout the southwest, author Turner knows a few things about going fast in a Porsche and then fixing them when he breaks something.

PART II Brand loyalty. Automotive manufacturers just love the concept. It means that life-time buyers can go from the El Cheapo entry-level car all the way up to the Grand Poohbah luxo barge, all without leaving the comfort and safety of the driver’s seat of their favorite brand. No doubt the Grand Poohbah is probably the most expensive car in the fleet and I have a sneaking suspicion, also the least fuel-efficient car in the fleet too, but that’s okay, because it’s also the most profitable car the manufacturer makes. You know—the one that no matter what the Government of XYZ country does to try to kill it, the manufacturer will keep building that sucker till the nodding donkeys stop pumping oil. OK, so maybe I am talking about Lexus guys, but there is something to say about how we Porsche folk approach our favorite marque. I am willing to bet that for many of us, there’s more than one Porsche lurking in our collective garages. We bought in to the concept of the entry-level car and maybe started with a Boxster. But from there we may have moved to the flag ship, the 911 Carrera (or something more fun like a Turbo, GT3 or, dare I say it, a GT2). And as family needs changed maybe we added a Cayenne, Macan or Panamera for when two-up driving was out of the question and you were forced—yes forced—to put people or stuff in the back. Point is, once we bought into the Porsche family hook, line, and PDK, we most likely decided to stay around for quite some time. But have you checked the prices of those suckers lately? I mean a Cayman can run way north of $100K and that does not even include fun stuff like seats and wheels. Problem is for me, the price tag of new Porsches is beyond my reach. Not so much because of what I make, but because of one or two other things that occupy me financially (like kids in college, their cars, room and board and the myriad of other things that seem to be attached to young adults these days, like eSports subscriptions and music stream services…which I pay for!). So I have to be content with pre-owned Porsches. I may be dating myself a bit, but there was a time when we called them used cars; but pre-owned sounds so much more civilized. Nowadays a 2002 Boxster S is what fills my garage. Yes, I procured it as a pre-owned vehicle. Although to most people a Porsche is not exactly entry-level, fact is at this time in my life, it’s what I can afford. To the uninitiated layman, however, a 2002 Boxster looks pretty much like a 2010 Boxster or a 2015 Boxster. Honestly they cannot tell the difference. But what about a real entry-level Porsche, say a sub-Boxster? At one point, it was rumored for years. It was an on again/off again affair that kept us guessing. One day it’s going to be an enhanced version of a new VW, the next it’s going to be smaller and lighter than the Boxster. This is great! I remember thinking. Hey, I can afford an entry-level Porsche. Something around $40K (well equipped). If I move a few things around financially, get top dollar for my Boxster S and use the proceeds from the sale as a down payment, it could work. But ultimately Detlev Von Platen, (at that time the CEO of Porsche North America) killed any hope of an El Cheapo Porsche, saying “You won’t see anything lower than the current Boxster model.” Further squashing any hopes for an entrylevel Porsche, he continued: “Our entry model is our pre-owned program.” Thanks Detlev. We get the picture. Been there, doing that… And on that exhaust note, see you next time.

The Cure for Racing Withdrawal You say you’re pining for the scream of an F 1 engine? You shaking for those incar views that seem like they’re running at 2x speed, only they’re actually realtime? You miss that life-size drama about careers that have been pointed toward a seat in F1 since the protagonists were eight years old? Well, bunkie, I’ve got a solution for you. Formula 1: Drive to Survive, season two. You can find it on Netflix. And it’s free. Ten episodes. And, of course, Netflix makes it really easy to binge-view the production. After an episode ends, you do nothing. The system automatically segues to the next one. A year ago, I reviewed season one. I found it thoroughly enlightening. Like peeling the onion on what actually goes on, especially behind the scenes. The love, the hate, the pressure, the support networks that all the drivers seem to have. Oh, and the racing. The racing itself was almost secondary. Almost, but not quite. Because the cinematography has flashes of brilliance. Even if you know what’s going to happen. Last time around, Mercedes and Ferrari didn’t participate. As a result, the producers were forced to cover everyone else. Which really amplified the drama associated with all the teams trying to be “best of the rest.” The drivers, the team principals, the whole traveling circus. Yes, it’s back. Only, this time around, with Mercedes and Ferrari also participating. I know, I know. Don’t worry, of course they’re covered. But not to the detriment of the rest of the field. I don’t know if it’s just me. But I keep trying to think of another sport which has opened its doors to the fan in such a transparent way. I know there are limitations in the series. No glimpses into driver negotiations, for example. No shots of drivers being told their services will no longer be needed. No analysis of performance data. No idea of just what the actual performance envelope of an F1 car actually is today. Other than the fact that they’re faster than last year’s cars. But, then again, can you name another sport that has allowed us into it’s inner circle? Friends, managers, parents, train-

ers. The good-natured kidding between teammates in the paddock. Counterposed by the same drivers out on the circuit, bouncing off each other. I came away from season 1 with a totally new appreciation for the whole crazy affair. And the kids … ok, we can call most of them young adults … who have devoted virtually all of their formative years to one dream. To be an F1 “pilot.” You see them literally pinching themselves. Has this been done before? With the exception of the movie Senna, I don’t think so. The story theme that occupies much of the narrative revolves around Pierre Gasley, now in Daniel Ricciardo’s seat at Red Bull, trying to establish himself. Christian Horner, Red Bull Team Principal, says, “If they’re good enough, they survive. If they’re not good enough…. The thing is, who’s good enough to partner with Max Verstappen. P7 or 8 or 9 has no value to us.” We visit Gasley at home, a home he left at 13 to go karting. We’re there when he finds out that Antoine Hubert has suffered a fatal crash in the F2 race. They’ve been close friends since they both went karting. We see the photos. And we’re there when Gasley learns he’s been demoted to Toro Rosso, his seat at Red Bull taken by Alex Albon. Who also raced karts with Gasley and Hubert. Who, one year ago, was also in F2. Helmut Marko: “He has nine races to prove himself, and the seat is his in 2020.” Albon’s first race for Red Bull is at Spa. Verstappen drops out at the start. Albon goes from 14th to 5th. His career best. In his Red Bull debut. Cyril Abiteboul, team principal at Renault. “I know that, if I don’t deliver, my life expectancy is very short.” His dilemma is what to do about Nico Hulkenberg who, we learn, has had the longest career in F1 without a podium. There’s no way he doesn’t think about it, says journalist Will Buxton. At Hockenheim, in that great equalizer, the rain, Hulkenberg rises to P2. And spins out. “You can’t blame the elements, can’t blame the track, can’t blame the car,” Says Abiteboul. For 2020, his seat is taken by Esteban Ocon. Who has been reserve driver for Mercedes.

by Danielle Badler

Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff, addressing the team at the start of the season, “We must manage expectations, stay modest.” At Monaco, mourning the death of Niki Lauda, “Niki had the ability to make things happen. He called Lewis (Hamilton) to get him to come to the team. Otherwise, he would not do it…. Niki would say the most painful incidents are the ones where we learn the most. We recover and come out stronger.” Claire Williams. “As a child I didn’t understand how famous my dad was. I don’t want to disgrace the Williams name. I don’t want the team to fall apart under me … this is a family business. I took this job to protect a legacy.” She holds the title Deputy Team Principal, under her father, Frank, who’s shown mostly in the background, in his wheelchair. Their season is summed up by driver George Russell at Silverstone. “Obviously, I want to be world champion. And I believe I will get there one day. The teams know your (personal) performance. But I’m driving around in 19th position, week in and week out. I don’t want to be there.” At the end of the race, Russell says, “lap after lap, the car’s like a yoyo. I feel like an idiot.” The series concludes with a big nod toward 2020. Zak Brown, McLaren Team Principal, notes that they have had a successful season, but they have a long way to go, if they want to catch the top three. Their driver Carlos Sainz has proven very competitive in his first season for them. And Gasley … Gasley! … has seized a P2 in Brazil with Toro Rosso, his first podium ever, with Lewis behind him. “Thank God! This is the best day of my life,” he says.

2020 looks to be one of the biggest years ever. A majority of drivers have contracts that expire at the end of the season. It’s a new chapter. As if. At this writing, the first six races of 2020 are canceled. Enjoy the Netflix series. It’s all we’ve got. But it’s worth it.
