President’s Corner While most of these President’s articles are a recap of prior events with a peek on what’s on the calendar for future months, this will take a slightly different twist. Yes, I am going to congratulate Peter Olliviere for the great job in organizing the GCR Holiday party on the “Anticipation” and participating in the Winterfest Boat Parade (I’m sure there will be lots of coverage and pictures on this). However, even more important is the fact that our Region adopted a new Community Activity partner, kicked off a Driving for Life fundraising campaign, presented Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital with financial contributions totaling over $10,000, but also gave to the kids 5 Boxster kiddy cars (4 from GCR and 1 from GCR member Lana Henning) to transport them from their rooms to treatment within the facility. While the kids seemed to know exactly what to do, hospital staff used the remote controls to keep things safe. The Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital effort was also spearheaded by Peter....and for these and other contributions, Peter was named GCR Enthusiast of the Year. Congratulations on this well-deserved recognition. The other focus of this month’s article is a continuation of an earlier Porsche Parade piece started several months ago. First of all, most of you know the Porsche Parade (arguably the biggest event in the PCA universe) is coming to Boca Raton in late July. However, what most don’t know is when the last time GCR had a parade in our Region. If you guessed 2003 you are wrong … but close. The 2003 Parade was held in the Tampa area and this was the last time the Parade was in Florida. The last parade in Gold Coast Region was in 1968! Many of our younger members were not even born yet...and I was driving a beat up VW, just waiting for the day I could own a new Porsche. That didn’t come till 1972 when I bought a 914, then joined PCA. Parades have changed a lot since 1968 and here are some snippets about what Parades were like 51 years ago, and this particular
Steve Kidd - President
parade named Sonnenfest. Back in 1968, PCA was still a relatively new car club and this was to be the 13th Parade. Rumor has it that some felt the number 13 was bad luck and the name Sonnenfest was used rather that the 13th parade. Old timers who attended this parade say the event was far from sunny as the name would imply. In fact I’m told it rained 3 of the 5 days and some of the regulars wanted to re-name the parade “Soggyfest”. In the early years Regions would bid on an opportunity to host a parade and it was quite an honor for a Region that was only 5 years old to be tasked with such a major responsibility like hosting a Parade. Our GCR President at the time, Walt Lohmann, served as Parade Chair and GCR Officers and Directors were all in charge of specific areas such as concours, autocross, rally, tech quiz, trophies, door prizes, etc. The Region was responsible for all planning and hosting from start to finish. From the stories I hear, Parade had the flavor of a big Zonefest rather than the huge event it is today. The Parade registration fee was $20.00 and the application was a ¼ page paper form, mailed in with a check. Many Porsches at the Parade were 4 cylinders, under 100 HP and not air conditioned. The really fast cars of the day were the 1967 911S and 904....both with less than ½ the HP of the lowest HP Caymans and Boxsters of today. The host hotel was the Colonnades in Palm Beach Shores and promoted the fact they were air conditioned and temperature averages for late June on the beach were 86-74. In 1968 the Parade was only 5 days long (Wednesday-Sunday) rather than the 7+ days like today. Like today this Parade was not without its controversies and tales, including the following: **The rally was a time speed & distance (TSD) rally, as gimmick rallies had not come to be popular like they are today, and went thru several residential neighborhoods. As the story was relayed to me, one homeowner was outraged by all the

speeding Porsches thru his neighborhood and he came out with a baseball bat and threatened “bodily harm”...not sure if he meant the car’s body or driver’s body, but no one was hurt. I was told the best words to describe the rally was rainy and miserable with many folks getting lost and returning to the hotel to give the rally master a piece of their mind. **Back in 1968 the autocross was one of the most popular events and was held at the PBIR Race Track, just like the one in 2019. It was told to me that 1 day of autoX was held in the rain and the other day was damp but not raining. The rainy day produced lots of spins and a new 911 Targa flipped upside down. The driver was reported to be shaken up but ok and the car was flipped back on 4 tires by a group of competitors, with the event continuing as if nothing odd happened! Gold Coast went home with more than its share of trophies...especially in AutoX where top time of the day went to GCR’s Bill Murrah, driving a 904. Stan Pearlman (one of our local legends who is still around) also won his class and one of the top times in a 1967 911S. In all GCR took a podium finish in 7 of the 11 AutoX classes! **One of my current neighbors, Larry Crismond, was Vice President of Peachstate Region and accepted the Region of the Year trophy for Peachstate at Sonnenfest. Tours had not come into vogue like today, however the big non- competition event was a day trip to the Bahamas...for a price of $35.00! While a lot has changed over the years the spirit of Parade is still as strong as ever. We’re hoping to return to the glory of 1968 ….without the rain...this year in Boca. Stay tuned for more Parade stories as I cover the 2003 Parade in Tampa next month. Thanks to Stan Pearlman, Jack Fuller and Larry Crismond for providing some of the stories and PCA historian RJ Wilmoth for other materials….Steve

Porsches by the Bay by Peter Olliviere
You would think that writing an article about a past event would be easy and after all the planning that needs to be done to insure a successful event, just writing about it after would be a piece of cake. Well for me you could not be further from the truth. For me at least pulling together the different parts of an event like Porsches by the Bay, if not easy it is not exactly difficult, and after doing it a couple of times it gets easier. On the other hand trying to convey the efforts of several months leading up to the event and then the excitement of the actual day, into a simple and concise article for me is very difficult. As I sit here writing it’s January 1, 2019, since the event took place on November 17th 2018, I think I have procrastinated enough, so here goes. On the November 17th Gold Coast Region PCA, held its premiere Concours event, Porsches by the Bay, on the lawn at the luxurious Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Miami, Florida. This annual event has been held for several years and is known for the participation of some of the spectacular Porsches in South Florida. This year’s event was

no different in terms of the quantity and quality of the cars that were shown. What was different was the obstacles that created difficulty and backups in registering cars last year, were corrected. This year the registration process was considerably easier, resulting in a smoother and more enjoyable experience for the entrants. One continuing problem is that we are victims of our own success. The one thing we cannot change is the size of the event venue. With over 100 cars registered, we ran out of physical room to accommodate them. This may force us next year to limit the entries in each judged class, or find a new location. also in an effort to level the playing field between the professional shops and the privateer, we are looking at creating a Pro Class that all the shops would compete in. Since this event included lunch it should be noted that we served over 108 lunches, and collected over $790.00 in donations for Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. Porsches by the Bay 2018 turned out to be a very successful event, better than anyone could have hoped for. Porsches by the Bay 2019 should be even better.

I could not complete this article without mentioning the people who helped put on this awesome event. Fred Kohly, who handles the concours judging, pulling judges together and helping me in arranging the class. Bob Varela and the other judges who jumped in and did a wonderful job. Jake Kooser, Paul Raben, Mike Koller and the others who assisted in getting the cars parked, thank you. Special thanks to Cynthia Diaz who was fantastic on processing registration. There was another lady who I neglected to get her name. I want to say thank you for your help in checking cars in and the knitting lessons I got from you. I have to give a special thank you to the judges who as an independent group decided to award me the Best in Show Award.

Palm Beach Gardens Wine Tasting Event By Dale Brundige, Social Chair Our host, Drew Feinberg and his team are passionate about wine and his private wine room was the Perfect venue to host our recent wine tasting event in Palm Beach Gardens. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the wine selections, especially the Adobe Redline. What’s particularly interesting is that this wine comes from Adobe Road winery owned by legendary race car driver Kevin Buckler. Naturally, Kevin’s race car team raced Porsches. Free drawings for the two beautiful gift boxes also included Kevin’s redline wine. Drew was the ultimate host. He made sure no one had an empty glass, and his selection of wines was tastefully chosen. Everyone seemed to have at least one or two favorites. Parking is always a concern at PCA events. Drew’s team had it covered. Seriously, the parking area was covered, and within just a few steps of the entrance. Guided tours of the wine storage vaults, great wine, appetizers and conversations with good friends in a comfortably elegant setting set the stage for an excellent experience we won’t soon forget. Let’s do this again soon!
We’ve had World Renowned Winery’s such as Duckhorn Winery, Cakebread Winery, Kathryn Hall Winery, Gaja Winery from Italy and Chateau Bouchard from Burgundy France grace our facility. From Winery Events to educational fun events such as Blind Tastings, Wine & Artisan Cheese Pairings and Chef inspired wine & food pairings we just love to have fun with wine.
Drew Feinberg Sommelier The room is equipped with leather chairs, a custom wood table, a surround sound entertainment system, a 52” monitor; a wireless conference phone and can hold up to 20 people. We also have a full line of Riedel Crystal Glassware and Decanters for your use. Staff will be able to assist with catering and any other needs.

Tech Corner :
The Times They Are A-Changing Article by Pedro P. Bonilla, Tech Editor
As Bob Dylan sang in ’64: The Times, They Are A-Changin’. The advent of technology, specifically applied to our cars with services such as Uber and Lyft and a little down the road with autonomous (driverless) vehicles won’t just make our ride to and from the airport cheaper and more convenient, it is quickly changing our way of life! It used to be that the average was 3 cars per household in rural America. The average is now down to 2 and falling.
It used to be that we (Americans) had a love affair with our cars. Back in the 50s and 60s we drove to the movies and watched them in our car, at our favorite drive-in movie theater. It used to be that we drove to get a quick bite and were served in our car, sometimes by a server on roller skates.

It used to be that Porsches were all air cooled. It used to be that Porsches all had a flat-6. It used to be that Porsches were only available with a manual transmission. All of that had been slowly changing. Now it’s taking giant strides! Porsches are not air cooled anymore. Some Porsches now have a turbo flat-4 engine. Most Porsches now have a PDK transmission. There’s an all-electric Porsche called the Taycan. People are now cutting down to a one-car household and using public transportation and car-sharing. Because the automobile is now looked at as more of a tool, in the near future the average household will cut down to one car. It will be an autonomous, electric, self-driving car that can take the kids to school and then come back to pick you up to take you to work. The car will then be used to generate income by offering ridesharing services until it’s time to pick up the kids and finally bring you back home from work.
it’s a Porsche, that number is a tad higher). In many rural areas mortgages average $700/month, which means that car payments are higher than mortgages and they are paying that much money for a vehicle that is most likely parked for the majority of the year. The average American only drives their car 4% of the year (120 hours in total). The consensus is that with autonomous cars and ride-share, we will need less than 25% of the cars we have today to meet everyone’s needs. The physical structure of cities and towns will also change. Because of our car culture, cities have built parking lots and garages that take up prime real estate. This will change as well and those spaces will be repurposed. And the love-affair is over! Most of Generation Y, Millennials (born 1977 – 1995) can’t drive a stick shift. Most of Generation Z, Centennials (born 1996 and later) will have no expectations of even owning a car.
If you just bought a car (hopefully a new Porsche), don’t worry – once you pay it off, you’ll never have to own one again! Woopee. (I’m trying to sound sarcastic). Porsche CEO, Oliver Blume, trying to reassure Porsche’s loyal customers, said: “There will always be a demand for intelligent sporty mobility. At Porsche, the driving experience will always be at the forefront, but in a traffic jam or when you park a car, the driver might want to hand over control of the vehicle” - Times They Are A-Changin’. For more information on self-driving Porsches and more, please visit my website: www PedrosGarage.com. Happy Porsche’ing, Pedro

Foreign Affairs Motorsport Celebrates 40 Years In the Industry At Gold Coast Region 2018 by Bobby Varela October 13th 2018 was an important date in the calendar of many motoring and beer enthusiasts because it was the date chosen to have 2018 annual PCA Gold Coast Region Oktoberfest event. The event was sponsored by Foreign Affairs Motorsport, T-Bird Swap Shop and many others. It was held at Biergarten in Boca Raton and saw over 200 people registered to attend a day filled with fun celebrations, prizes, and of course, great cars. The lively event captured the true Oktoberfest sprit. Celebrations, Prost!
one of the sponsors, Foreign Affairs Motorsport’s, birthday. FAM celebrated their 40-year history of providing quality authorized parts and vehicle services to the automotive community. Prizes Although it was FAM’s birthday, they (along with the other sponsors) provided gifts in the form of the many prizes available to be won on the day. The prizes were a car lover’s dream and included a $500 Michelin Tire certificate, $300 basket from FAM with free oil and filter change, FAM shirt, and commemorative 9622 race car, movie tickets and snacks, $350 basket of a Porsche shirt, hat, keychain and umbrella and much more. One of the most heartwarming moments of the day came when the 50/50 raffle to raise money for the Joe DiMaggio Charity was won by a Porsche Club of America member who promptly donated the money back to the Joe DiMaggio Charity. Cars! Cars! Cars! Another highlight of the day was the incredible collection of vehicles on display. These included: Porsche 962 IMSA race car:
The Legendary 962 IMSA Race Car
Vanessa and Bobby Varela What is an Oktoberfest event without buzzing celebrations, great beer, and lederhosen? Good people, great prizes, and stunning cars created a festive atmosphere that was enjoyed by those who attended. The already buzzing atmosphere was added to by the celebratory mood in the air as the event also played host to
One of the legends of Porsche racing was a sight to behold on the Gold Coast. With a top speed of 211mph due largely to the 780bhp engine being required to move a measly 1900lbs, this legendary vehicle was a dominant racer in the 1980s and remained extremely competitive in the 90s. Some of its major wins include Sebring in 1985, Le Mans in 1987, and Daytona in 1991 (as well as many, many others). The popular vehicle was a great attraction for members of the PCA.
Porsche Carrera 2 Turbo RWB Miami track car This Carrera was definitely a show stopper and attracted the attention of many of the attendees. RAUGH-Welt Begriff Porsches’ are known for polarizing Porsche fans and this car was not different. With its striking looks and impressive performance, this Carrera was no different. Many attendees could be heard discussing whether or not this Porsche was a monument to Porsche or an abomination. Porsche Red Carrera 2 Cup Car Not a lot needs to be said about this car because of how popular it is but also how rare it is. The red Carrera 2 cup car on display is the only one in the world. Having this car on display at this year’s Oktoberfest gave enthusiasts the chance to enjoy one of the icons of Porsche up close and personal. For many, this was a truly once in a lifetime experience.
Attendees Cars A great thing about these events is that people bring their own cars as well. It brings an element of mystery because you can never be sure what you will be able to see. There were dazzling vehicles on display and attendees had a lot of joy looking at these automobiles, speaking to each other, and exchanging stories.
It All Comes Together
As you can see, the Gold Coast event was a true celebration in every sense of the word but no celebration, birthday or Oktoberfest is complete without a few beers and some delicious barbeque. The Konig Ludwig Weissbier beer was a major hit with the attendees (no surprise there as its heritage can be traced back to the Kingdom of Bavaria). The barbeque was courtesy of the Biergarten who splendidly roasted a full pig for the lunch event. All of this; the interesting people, celebrations, tasty food, wholesome beer, fun prizes and great cars all came together to ensure that the event was a huge success. We’re sure that for many, next year’s event can’t come soon enough.
