President’s Corner January was a very active month for Gold Coast region. After our assortment of cars and coffee breakfasts during the 1st weekend, (thanks co-coordinators) we were treated to a fabulous dine and drive to Islamorada during the 2nd weekend of 2019. This event was a slight twist from our usual Keys event in that a new restaurant was chosen which allowed our members to order off the regular menu and the extra distance covered scenery and bridges not encountered in previous drives to Key Largo. A BIG thanks to the organizers, points of contacts, safety teams, and tour leaders / sweeps. While the drive was about 25 miles longer each way, the added distance gave members added opportunity to exercise their Porsches and see a different part of the fabulous Florida keys. Don’t be surprised if you see a complete article about this event and some great pictures later in this issue. Later in the month, 7 GCR members helped out at the Daytona Rolex 24 hour endurance race . Many of you that attend this race, know that the PCA Corral and tent is located at the “Kink” (turn 5) and offers some of best viewing at the race. While parking at the corral is limit to 189 spots, and tickets are offered to those that had them the previous year, the tent is open to any PCA member or Porsche owner . The PCA corral tent is sort of an oasis of sanity in a sea of crazy race fans. PCA and Zone 12 co-ordinate tent activities and ask each of the regions in Zone 12 to work a shift in the tent ...ie ,provide information and registration, drinks and make sure only Porsches with the requisite pass to park in the corral. Gold Coast typically works the 3:30 to 6:30 shift and works out good for us that do the trip in 1 day. A Big thanks to Dottie Joaquin, Juliana, Chloe, Heather,
Steve Kidd - President
Gus and Steve for stepping up and working the GCR shift . Daytona was very cold that day, so GCR rotated workers to different jobs in and out of the tent to fulfill Gold Coast regions shift. The cold was bad enough, but from what I understand the rains came pouring down that evening and continued until the morning. Things were so bad Zone 12 decided to close the tent and pack up without any Sunday tent activities. While the cold rain, noise and crowds may not appeal to everyone, Daytona is still a world class Iconic track and Porche needs its fans to cheer the teams on. This year was not a stellar year for Porsche at this race. however that gives us all the more reason to return next year to watch our favorite marque rebound. The final few days of January and the 1st weekend of February brought us the 26th running of the 48 Hours at Sebring Club Race. For those of you that have not attended, this is a must do,bucket list activity. For starters, its the biggest and best run Club Race in all of PCA spanning 4 days of Porsche only racing, with an advanced solo and autoX added to the mix. The 48, as it is known by most folks has been co sponsored by Gold Coast and Sun Coast regions since the inception and is one of the longest running multi region events within PCA. There most likely will be a future Kassette devoted to Club race, however ,I hope this small “trailer” will get you psyched for what is to come and next years club race. One of the best ways to learn more about this event and Club racing in general is to visit the website www.48hoursatsebring.com. In addition to 4 days of track activity there are several banquets, and more socializing than you can imagine. There are track tours and auctions to raise money for Ronald McDonald House and the Boy Scouts. To make this more legendary is the fact that the entire event is handled by volunteers. A staff of 30 plus committee members

each handle a specific function,,,,and each committee member is very good at what they do. Additionally, several hundred volunteers that work specific shifts at different jobs such as helping on grid, in tech, at a corner assisting professional corner workers. Each volunteer gets a t-shirt and lunch during the days they work, but more importantly is a sense of being part of a really great event. Plan on volunteering next year if you have never tried it. You can work 1 day or multiple days and sign up to volunteer on the Club Race web site. My thanks to all the committee members and co-ordinators who start working on this Club race in September and some spend a whole week at Sebring not only doing their own specialized job but also helping with the logistics, material handling and set up that requires a huge number of man hours. Also ….just a reminder that if you have not registered for Parade, do so immediately. Step 1 took me less than 5 minutes and guarantees you a spot at this years Porsche Parade in Boca Raton. The last time a Parade was in South Florida was 1968, so know that the next Parade within a day drive is probably many years away. Speaking of Parade, hoping my next presidents article will give some highlight of the last parade in Florida.....the 2003 Tampa Parade. By the time you read this we will have already had our Valentines day social as well as a Picnic in Carlin Park, complete with door prizes and peoples choice car show, as well as several other activities. Don’t forget the Porsches and Pancakes breakfasts the 1st Saturday of each month at7 different locations in our region as well as the Thursday night socials (3rd Thursday of each month) at 5 different locations.....Hope to see you at a GCR event soon...Steve

Gold Coast Region, Winterfest Boat Parade and Christmas Holiday Party In the spirit of the season, Gold Coast Region held their Christmas Holiday Party aboard the ANTICAPATION IV while participating in the Fort Lauderdale Winterfest Boat Parade. 130 members took part in this unique adventure. We were part of a flotilla of 80 boats of all sizes that paraded up the Intercoastal Waterway from Ft. Lauderdale to Pompano Beach, Florida. The entire distance the homes and condos were decorated with Christmas lights, and with crowds of people attending viewing parties on shore waving as we went by. While the parties were on shore, our Christmas party took place aboard the Gold Coast Party Boat. We had an outstanding DJ who kept the members dancing all night, and we enjoyed good food and drinks through the entire ride. Whatever the reason for the smiling faces, there were a lot of them at the end of the event.

Although the event was great fun, it did have a more serious purpose; we celebrated the Season’s ending of the first ever “Gold Coast Regions, Joe DiMaggio Driving for Life” fund raising campaign. The campaign started on Sept 29th at the Chili Cook Off, and continued at the Jazz & Blues Pot Luck Social, Oktoberfest, and Porsches by the Bay. As a result of the generosity of the Gold Coast Region’s members we collected and donated $11,170.00. I thank everyone who participated and the children that will benefit at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital thank you too. The goal for 2019 has been set at $20,000.00, reflecting on our performance last year, we should be able to meet this goal with ease. Once again we thank you for your efforts and generosity. Autocross Update Our 2018 AutoX season is history and you can check out the class results/ champs on the GCR Website. To be in the running for a class championship, competitors needed to attend at least 4 of our 7 events and beat their competition. Here are some possibilities for our next 3 events : Event 2 Late March or mid April This event may materialize at the last minute so be flexible Event 3 Late April or Mid May We think we have this one finalized , but more on that by e-mail Event 4 Late May or early June ...3 locations under consideration Our biggest obstacle continues to be AutoX sites. As many of you know, BBT re-surfaced their lot and declined to rent the lot for 8-12 months to allow the paving products to weather awhile. Alternative sites are difficult to find and often too expensive for GCR to consider. I’ll continue to ask.....If you have a connection at large parking lot, airport other large paved area, please let us know about the property and provide us with the decision maker and their contact info., Event 1 recap Zone Challenge AutoX February 2 at the 48 hours at Sebring Club Race Autocross has become a feature part of the 48 Hours at Sebring Club Race, and again ran as part of the February event at Historic Sebring raceway. We extended the tradition in 2019 and saw who the top dogs were in each class.. Classes were based on PCR’s (mid-size region class structure). And there were several notable class changes to incorporate some new vehicles and other revisions to try and keep vehicles with similar performance potential together. Luckily everyone got 6 dry runs and competition was very close in some classes. This event brings out the best Autocrossers in Zone 12 and again Cory Corona from Suncoast achieved Fasted Time of the day in his Cayman S. Ladies FTD went to Tory Lewis, also of Suncoast region, driving a Boxster S. While GCR took home lots of trophies, Suncoast took home the top times of the day. A huge thanks to the pick-up crew that got the equipment picked up and the trailer packed in a record 23 minutes, so we could enjoy the trophy presentation and banquet later that evening in Gallery of Legends. If you could not make it this year, plan on attending in 2020. Parade AutoX July 24th and 25th at the PBIR Racetrack ...Yes the Porsche Parade is coming to Boca Raton and the Parade autox will be held on the track...yes there will be cones and appropriate safeguards but I envision a fast course that will not be hard to follow. This is where the best of the best compete, and you must register for the Parade and sign up for the Auto X on line, most likely in early April. Last year the Parade fee was $115. per couple and the AutoX was $35.00 per person. The Modified, Improved and Production classes most likely will run on Wednesday and the Stock classes on Thursday, but that could change

Everyone is now required to pre register for any AutoX on Clubregistration.net… Please consult the GCR website and Kassette for all Autocross photos & results. Porsche classes are loosely based on the PCR’s for medium size regions, with minor regional adjustments. The major difference will be the addition of SN (stock car/novice driver) for men and ladies. These classes are strictly for newcomers only. Please see Steve for any car class questions or if you wish to run as a novice. We reserve the right to make additional class/rule changes as needed. Our 2019 series is planned to be 7 events. To be eligible for an end of the year award, competitors must run in at least 4 events in the same class. Each competitor’s top 4 finishes will be calculated and an end of the year class champion and possibly runner-up (depending on class size) will be chosen. In case of a tie, additional events will be added until the tie is broken. Year-end class champion awards will be presented. No passengers except for an approved AX instructor driving or in the car instructing. Questions…..call Steve or Dottie Kidd 954946-3196 For 2019 our advise is please register early. As a reward, early registrants will get the best price. However, those registering the last week before the event will see an increase in event registration price. While we typically do not allow on-site registration, if we do, your registration fee will increase to a minimum of $55.The best advise is to register early, as some events do have caps and we charge a premium fee if you register 1 week or less from the event date.

Tech Corner :
Wheels Article by Pedro P. Bonilla, Tech Editor
You may want to update the look of your car with an almost-new set of takeoff wheels you found, or you may be looking for a second set of wheels for track or winter use, so since they came off another Porsche, they’ll fit you car, right?
Not so fast! There’s a bunch of stuff you should first look at before you take the plunge or you may regret it. Wheels are actually quite complex in design, fitment and materials used, so we’ll try to clear up some of all that info. Materials and Manufacturing: Depending on the type of auto, and its intended use(s) the wheels are manufactured in specific ways and with different materials. Let’s first look at the different materials. Steel: Steel wheels are easy and cheap to make. Most of the wheels up to the 60s were made of steel. Aluminum: Provides many of the benefits of steel but also offers the reduced weight that comes from using a lighter raw material. The majority of the wheels today, particularly in sport cars, are made from aluminum. Magnesium: Generally used only for racing. Magnesium is even lighter than aluminum, but it comes at a higher price. Magnesium wheels

require a lot of maintenance and can ignite if subjected to extremely high temps. Carbon Fiber: The latest of the “exotic” materials used in wheels. Lighter and stronger than steel, aluminum or magnesium, carbon fiber is ideal for racing and special applications. It’s only downside at the moment is its very high cost which makes magnesium wheels look affordable. The different ways in which wheels are manufactured can greatly affect the quality and cost of the wheel as well. Cast: Most wheels use the gravity cast forming process, where molten metal gets poured into a mold and forms a single piece wheel that’s easy and cheap to make. A second way to cast wheels is by using the low pressure casting method which uses positive pressure to fill the mold. This creates a denser, more uniform product which will therefore be heavier than by using the cast forming process. Flow Formed: Starts with a low pressure casting and uses strong rollers to shape the barrel and lips under extreme pressure and heat. This way of manufacturing also strengthens stiffens and adds resistance to impact. Forged: Forging begins with a billet block of special aluminum alloy. The wheel or its components are then CNC’d or pressed from the block of metal. The aluminum alloys used in forging generally offer a superior quality product allowing for the use of less material to make a stronger and lighter wheel. Forging also offers much more flexibility and creativity in wheel design. Multi-piece wheels: This way of modular manufacturing breaks up the wheel in sections. The main benefit is that this allows changing the dimensions of the wheel versus monoblock wheels that are forged or

cast into a fixed size. Multi-piece wheels allow for increase or decrease of the wheel’s width and change of the offset. In case of wheel damage, only the damaged part is replaced, reducing cost.
Parts of the wheel: Barrel: The part that spans the distance between the outboard and inboard flanges Bead Seat: The flat area of the flange where the tire rests on Bolt Pattern: The number of lug seats to the diameter of the circle formed by them Center Cap: Caps the center bore on the face of the wheel Centerline: Imaginary line equidistant from both flanges Diameter: The diameter of the wheel measured from bead to bead (usually in inches) Lip: The outermost edge of the wheel Lug (Nut/Bolt) Seat: The type of seat (Tapered, Mad with washer or Ball) Mounting Pad: The flat center area where the wheel mounts onto the hub Outboard / Inboard Flange: Made up of the outer / inner lip and the bead seats Offset: Distance between the
centerline and the mounting pad (usually in mm) Valve Stem Hole: The location where the valve stem is installed. Wheel Face: The outer face of the wheel Wheel Width: Distance between the inside edges of the flanges (usually in inches) Fitment: Now that you’re armed with the information it’s time to check out the fitment. My car, a 1998 Boxster came from the factory with: Fronts: 7 x 17 – 55, bolt pattern: 5/130 Rears: 8.5 x 17 – 50, bolt pattern: 5/130
That means that the fronts are 7 inches wide, they are 17 inches in diameter and have an offset of 55 mm. The bolt pattern 5/130 means that the wheels have 5 lug holes equally spaced on an imaginary circle with a diameter of 130 mm. A few years ago I needed an extra set of wheels for the track so I started looking and found a very nice set, at a good price, from a much newer 2007 Cayman S which had the following specs: Front: 7 x 17 – 55, bolt pattern: 5/130 Rear: 8.5 x 17 – 48, bolt pattern: 5/130 The question was would they fit? The fronts were identical, so fitness was not an issue there. The rears had an offset of 48 which as 2 mm less than the originals so that meant that the outside edge of the wheel would be 2 mm further into the wheel well. I knew they would fit but I also wanted the wheels to fill out the fenders a little more so I decided to install spacers. Our cars need to have Hub-Centric spacers so I purchased a set for my

car which consisted of two 10 mm spacers and two 15 mm spacers. Then spacers are placed between the hub and the wheel and their function is to physically push out the wheel by their thickness. I decided to put the 15s on the front and the 10s on the rear because that way the wheel wells would be filled just about right for my taste. Keep in mind that when adding spacers you also have to replace the lugbolts with longer ones. Add the thickness of the spacer to the length of your bolts and that’s your new lugbolt length. You don’t have to replace the bolts if the spacer is 5mm or less.. For more information on Porsche parts and more, please visit my website: www PedrosGarage.com.
