President’s Corner Ed Kohly- President
Summer is finally here and as we all know, living in South Florida we are competing with the weather. So our calendar in the summer months is a little lighter as we prepare for activities in the cooler months. For those of you who joined us last month at 24 Hours of Le Mans Viewing Party at Porsche of West Broward, thank you for coming out to support our club. This was the first event Porsche of West Broward has held since opening on April 1st and hopefully it won’t be their last. It was great to see a lot of our members there and it was a lot of fun. Don’t forget next month we will be doing our Annual Pot Luck on Saturday (8/13) at the Spangler’s home. This year, there will be live music from a few grammy winning artists so we will have a lot of fun. You wouldn’t want to miss out on the fun especially with meeting new members and revisiting with old ones. Please RSVP on www.clubregistration.net. Don’t forget the Conchy Joe’s drive and dine in Jensen Beach. This has also been
one of the more popular events and always very well attended. We also have a block of rooms at the Marriott hotel for those who want to stay over. From what I hear, there is live reggae music at 8 pm so make it a weekend and enjoy good food and great friends. We have our 2017 planning meeting coming up in August/September as we plan our activities for the upcoming year. If you would like us to plan a particular event and think other members would be interested, let us know. You can email Beena at browardsocial@gmail.com Later this month, we will be doing our very own 1st Time Driver’s Ed (DE) at Palm Beach International Raceway, Stuart Jarkowski our DE Chair has been spear heading this event all year and I am excited to finally host our very own GCR DE program this month on Saturday July 16th, I hope you will be there too. The following weekend on Saturday 7/23, we will be doing a fun drive/stay over through the back

roads of the everglades all the way up to Port Charlotte where we will be staying the night at the Wyvern Hotel. For those members who have driven with me through the backcountry roads, you all know how much fun it is and we will be joining our friends from Citrus Region for the stay over. After that weekend, Zone 12 will be hosting a multi-region tour of the Larry Wilson Collection on Saturday 7/30. If you have not seen or heard of this Porsche collection, it’s up there with the Collier, Gunnar and Brumos collections. This event will be limited to 100 members only. This collection is located near Palm Beach International Raceway, at the north end of Palm Beach County. That’s all for now. Enjoy all our events and be safe. Until next month, Full Speed Ahead !! Ed

Editor’s Notes Zonefest was an outstanding weekend! I am able to present a review of most events the month of or after the event. There is so much to cover about this multi regional event that was held at Sebring over the Memorial Day weekend and attended by the 10 regions of zone 12, this issue will only start to cover some of the activities that took place with more coverage to follow in August and September. As you start reading the articles and checking out the photo galleries you will see why more space will be required to tell the story of Zonefest. After the members arrived and were registered by the Zonefest welcome crew, preparation for Saturdays event began by cleaning and detailing a selection of some very nice looking Porsches. Early

the next day all the Porsches were displayed on the Chateau lawn under a bright Florida sun with no rain in sight. The judges went over the final team plans as the competitors continued to lightly dust and make their final touch ups. During the past two years many of our members attended GCR Concourse College so this event was like a final exam to apply lessons learned. The good news is that the scores reflected the hard work and improved skills of all the competitors. Thanks to Fred, Peter and all of the other instructors along with the judges. We used a new judging system that worked very well and helped the judging and scoring team. Many of our members go on to Parade to become national winners so all of this preparation and competition pays off.

In this issue you will see a good selection of the Porsches including a first, a Porsche tractor. We have more tractors in the region so look for more at our next Zonefest. Next month you will see more information about the Judges Choice winner father and son team Chad and Willek Sapp. We had many photographers contribute their photos so credits go to Steve Kidd, Lucy Kohly, and Norm Sippel along with a few from myself. A very special thanks to all of our supporters, our volunteers, all zone board members Steve Kidd our zone rep, PCA national staff and Dottie Kidd our event coordinator. Stay tuned for the continuing coverage in our August issue. Roger

Zonefest Introduction by Steve and Dottie Kidd
As some of you know, Zonefest has been a tradition for many, many years. It could best be described as a mini-parade that involves all ten regions in Zone 12. In the early days Zonefest was hosted primarily as a Gold Coast/Suncoast event and later was embraced by Citrus Region. Over the last five years the idea has been to move Zonefest around the state to different regions. This year Zonefest took on a new identity as it was run by Zone 12 with assistance from four regions who hosted different events. Our introduction would not be complete without a huge thank you to all our sponsors, supporters and volunteers that made this event possible. A complete listing of all these businesses and individuals is listed at the end of this article. PLANNING AN EVENT LIKE ZONEFEST is a year-long process involving many people and coordinating a large number of events and activities. For this year’s Zonefest we wanted to keep the successful framework developed for the 2013 Zonefest. This included four major competitive events (Concours, Rally, Tech Quiz and Autocross). Additionally, in order to make this a true family event, kids activities were planned that paralleled the adults’ activities. A tour of the Renzetti collection was planned and executed to give those non-competitive types a great activity. New this year we planned a meeting for all region newsletter editors, webmasters and social media gurus which was led by a PCA National Staff member, Don Roof, from the state of Washington. Registration was handled by Club Registration but with the option to complete a paper application and pay by check. For the Kidds our initial plan was to bring Steve’s 944 S2 which was undergoing some major repairs and painting. That plan changed when we realized the car would not be ready in time for Zonefest. Plan B was to trailer the GT3. A week before Zonefest we realized there was no way we could haul all the Zonefest supplies in just the bed of our pickup truck. Plan C was to rent a U-haul trailer and drive the truck, trailer and Dottie’s faithful daily driver (an all-around utility vehicle). Just a little side note, “Billy” as he is affectionately known, is the last Porsche owner by Billy Grabowski, Gold Coast Region’s most elderly member. “Billy” had never been concoursed before and was not set up for Autocross like Steve’s S2 but ended up being the fun choice for the weekend. As with any event this size, there are complications that arise and revisions to the original plans must made. For example, at a site visit two weeks prior to the event, we discovered the skid pad, where the autocross was to be held, was undergoing some renovations, specifically new irrigation and drainage lines. The site was covered with dirt and heavy equipment. The track assured us that the construction would be complete and the area re-sodded prior to Zonefest. Luckily everything worked out; the autocross site was a little dirty but ready for use. Good thing we rented that trailer as several folks dropped off large bulky items that needed transport. Due to an enormous setup a decision was made to head up on Thursday afternoon to get a start on setup and logistical challenges that awaited us. Fortunately, Dottie had numbered and labeled the many boxes so we were able to move supplies to the proper location. One of the photos that you may see is the trailer, truck bed and the 944 S2 loaded up and ready to roll. FRIDAY’S ACTIVITIES actually started Thursday evening

with stuffing of the “goodie bags” and setting up the registration room and car wash area. Friday morning at Sebring started early with Steve making the final run for supplies and also completion of Lori Renzetti’s shopping list for the Garage Mahal final items. While Steve was delivering his truckload of supplies from Home Depot to Lori n Lake Placid, Dottie was making final preparations for registration, hospitality, banquets and administrative tasks with Chateau Elan. Zonefest participants started arriving around noon and utilized the car wash and detail area set up for the occasion. Registration opened earlier than planned and thanks again to the group of volunteers that manned tables, handed out goodies and provided information about the upcoming activities. After several hours of registration, the concours judges had a meeting, followed by a Concours Basics class and a Rally Basics class. While the final hour or registration was underway, the Hospitality team was busy baking chocolate chip cookies and readying the assortment of snacks and beverage to be offered Friday evening. Hospitality and wine was hosted by Beena Kohly of United Realty, and Orlando Brewery provided two varieties of craft beer. SATURDAY MORNING started with the concours cars assembling on the lawn of the Chateau Elan. This was an incredible variety of beautiful Porsches, including a Porsche tractor. There were two classes of concours entrants: Wash & Shine for those that just wanted to present the interior and exterior, and the Touring class that had a much more thorough inspection which included not only interior and exterior, but the engine and all storage compartments. Thanks to Fred Kohly the scoring sheets and judging procedures have been simplified and made easy work for the volunteers who tallied the scores. Also thank you to the Judges who volunteered to help. After a brief lunch break the next activity was a Gimmick Rally prepared by Chris & Jenny Branston of Everglades Region. Again our thanks go out to the volunteers that assisted with the driver meeting, car tech and rally scoring. The rally started at the Chateau Elan and headed north thru Sebring, Avon park, Frostproof, Lake Wales, and lots of Florida citrus country in between. The first group of rallyists started coming in around 4:00 and were greeted with cold beverages and snacks. The beer keg was provided by Briny Pub in Fort Lauderdale. While folks were enjoying a cold one, they could also take the tech quiz, prepared by Steve Hoffman of Space Coast Region who also happens to be a PCA National Technical Chair. While all this great hospitality was going on, Steve Kidd and Ed Kohly were gathering up photos to be shown at the Saturday dinner and preparing a slide show. As hospitality was winding down, Cindy Jacisin and Bob were busy setting up the door prize table and display for the banquet. At 7:00 sharp the doors to the ballroom were opened and guests were greeted by Zone Rep. Steve Kidd who served as MC and trophy/door prize coordinator. While everyone was enjoying a fabulous buffet dinner, Cindy Jacisin (PCA National Secretary) and Greg Halverson (PCA National Tour Chair) provided updates from national on upcoming events and the latest on tour guidelines. In addition, Cindy led a moment of silence in recognition of Memorial day and acknowledgement of all the Zonefest Veterans that had served our country. The fun really got started when our
youngest guests began pulling tickets for the door prizes. For those schedule to Saturday who couldn’t attend Zonefest, they missed a phenomenal opportuni- activities. This was enough excitement for one day and awards were presented to autocross and rally most people called it an evening after the banquet wound down. However, there was that group of partiers hell bent on closing down winners as well as kid’s event winners. A moment of silence was held for Mike Joffee the Hospitality Suite. Tech Corner :
Criticized success! Article by Pedro P. Bonilla, Tech Editor
Porsche is probably the most criticized success story in the world! Let me explain why I say that . In 1948 Ferdinand Porsche introduced the first production sportscar, with his name as the brand: The Porsche 356. Designed by his Son Ferry, it was not an overnight sensation. It took Porsche 2 years to manufacture and sell 50 cars, but by the early 50s the 356 had gained a following, especially by enthusiasts on both sides of the Atlantic because of it’s design, build quality and aerodynamics. The 356 evolved and got refined throughout the years. It was offered in different iterations: 356A, 356B, 356C with aircooled, flat-4 motors ranging from 1,100 cc to 2,000 cc, initially borrowed from the VW Beetle, mounted behind the rear axle (except for the prototype, No. 1, which had a mid-engine layout). Speedsters, Coupes and Cabriolets all sported the 356 designation. Even with all the success, in 1963 Porsche announced that it would phase out the 356 and replace it with the 901. Only 82 cars were badged as 901s because of a trademark dispute with Peugeot, and the 901 became the 911. Porsche marketed the 911 as a larger, more practical version of the 356. It also had a pair of rear seats. Critics were quick to pounce on its lack of focus. The 911 continued with the engine behind the rear axle, but instead of the flat-4 engine, Porsche opted to install a more powerful flat-6 in the new platform. This added almost 50% more cost to the car which made the acceptance of the 911 somewhat slow at first. This drastic price increase drew quite a bit of criticism. Concerned that the increase in price of the 911 with the 6 cylinder engine would substantially hurt sales, Porsche introduced an entry level 4 cylinder model dubbed the 912 immediately after the end of production of the 356 (in 1965). Initially, the 912

outsold the 911, boosting total production until the 911 gained its assured success. The 912 was short-lived because of the 911’s success and in 1969 Porsche announced that the new entry-level model would be the 914 which had been designed collaboratively between VW and Porsche. This new platform had been originally intended to be sold as a VW (replacing the Karmann Ghia) with a flat-4, and as a Porsche (entry level) with a flat-6. The 914 was a mid-engined, targatopped, two-seater When the 914 hit the market it was not considered a (real) Porsche by most enthusiasts! Because of an internal feud between VW and Porsche, after the death of VW’s CEO (Heinz Nordhoff in April, 1968) and the appointment of the new one (Kurt Lotz, which was not part of the Porsche clan) VW refused to share with Porsche it’s tooling for the 914 and the price of the 914-6 ended up being just slightly less that the 911. The 914-6 sold quite poorly, while the less expensive 914-4 became Porsche’s best seller during its model run outselling the 911 by a very wide margin with almost 120,000 units worldwide. In 1976 the Porsche 924 replaced the 914 as the company’s entrylevel model. It had been a joint project between VW and Porsche. In production terms, it was the first Porsche model powered by a non-flat, water-cooled, front-mounted engine, with an automatic transmission as an option!
Needless to say, die-hard Porsche fans felt betrayed! The 924 platform which had a 2.0L and then a 2.5L in-line 4 was developed into the 944 with 2.5L, 2.7L , 3.0L and 2.5L turbo power plants successively. Eventually this platform turned into the 968.
In 1993 at the Detroit Auto Show, Porsche unveiled the Boxster Prototype. It got a very favorable response and in 1996 they announced that the Boxster would go into production as a new entry-level model, the 986. The company went back to its roots by offering a rag-top, mid-engined, two-seater, flat-6 but the diehard fans of the 911 (by now designated as the 993) were quick to point out that this could not be a “real” Porsche since it was water-cooled!
What is this world coming to? Real Porsche cars should only have 2 doors! In 2013 Porsche expanded it’s model line with yet another SUV. This time with a smaller but turbo-charged Macan ...
Eventually the 986 Boxster turned out to be the car that physically saved Porsche from financial collapse. The 986 evolved into the 987 then into the 981 and now into the 718 and also spawned the Cayman which appeared in 2006.
... but the latest one is the “ultimate betrayal” to it’s die-hard fans: Porsche sports cars will no longer have a flat-6, normally aspirated engine, as God intended! It was recently announced that all Boxsters, Caymans and eventually Carreras will be exclusively powered by four cylinder turbos.
But the criticism of the company didn’t stop there. In 2002 (2003 in the US) Porsche became a truck (SUV) manufacturer [big collective GASP!] with the introduction of the Cayenne.
As you have read in the article, Porsche has been very criticized throughout it’s history. But coldly analyzing those criticized decisions as a Monday morning quarterback, they have been spot on! • The 911, criticized for its lack of focus, became the most iconic car in history • The 914-6 is today a highly sought after model of a “pure sportscar” • The 924/944/968 platforms are lovingly restored, driven and raced worldwide • The Boxster became the car that saved Porsche, now 20 years in production • The Cayenne was Porsche’s best-seller until last year • The Panamera has been another Porsche success story • The Macan now became Porsche’s best selling model • The jury is still out on killing the flat-6* (*) This is my attempt at sarcasm ... maybe. That one really hurt. What were they thinking? ;)
Porsche no longer would be exclusively a sports car manufacturer as it had been since inception and for the previous 54 years. Then in 2009 Porsche announced the 970, a luxury, full-sized, 4-door, front-engined (V6 or V8, or hybrid), 4,000 lb sedan known as the Panamera.

Drivers Education - An Instructor’s View by Stuart Jarkowski, DE Chair I remember my first DE like it was yesterday. I had recently purchased my first Porsche, a yellow 2005 base Boxster and immediately joined PCA. I was looking at the Gold Coast website and saw they had a DE program. I was surprised. I didn’t know anyone who owned a Porsche or anyone who had ever done a DE event so this was all new to me. I had no idea that a mere mortal could take their own car on a real racetrack. It didn’t take long for me to sign up for a DE at Homestead. I bought a helmet, got a tech inspection and was in line at the track by 6:30 am. I was so excited the night before that I barely slept a wink anyway so I was there before the sun came up. Soon others were lining up waiting for the gates to open. Everyone was out and about chatting. Everyone was so friendly and I was amazed at all the cars. The day was absolutely thrilling and by the end of the day I was exhausted and grinning from ear to ear. I never imagined in my wildest dreams that I would one day become a National PCA DE Instructor. There are so many things I enjoy about instructing students. It’s fun to welcome in a first time student. I always remember how foreign everything was to me on my first time so I make sure I spend a lot of time with them throughout the day to make them feel comfortable and
guide them through the day. Watching a first timer go through the class, then see the excitement as they enter pit row and drive onto the track for the first time is a blast. I watch as they begin to learn the fundamentals and their laps become smoother and faster. Watching the progression in skills between the first session on Saturday to the last session on Sunday and the constant grin on their face is just plain fun. They can’t wait to come back. Then there are the students who are already hooked and are returning to improve their skills. Again, I see the excitement as they fill me in on their car and DE history and get ready to get on the track. During the first few laps of the first session I assess the student’s current skill set and determine what we need to work on. It is so fun to see a student who already has some talent and experience continue to improve. I enjoy seeing them get more and more comfortable while the smoothness and speed increases. As the student continues to improve and they are getting most of the fundamentals down, the coaching gradually decreases and I just enjoy the ride and take pleasure watching them have fun. It all culminates when a student goes for their checkout ride to become a

solo driver. I watch the excitement as I tell my student they are ready to become a solo driver. I eagerly watch as one of our advanced instructors jump in the passenger seat for the checkout ride. And the final reward is the grin on their face as they emerge from the checkout ride and are promoted to a solo driver. There is still one more thrill to being an instructor…. watching a solo driver become a National PCA DE Instructor. I watch them transfer what they know in their head and the seat of their pants and be able to instruct others. I see them sharing their passion and experiencing the enjoyment of watching their students have fun and progress. And the cycle begins again. Stuart Jarkowski, DE Chair
