President’s Corner Ed Kohly- President
Hello again GCR Members. Fall is finally here and the first cool front has made it down to South Florida keeping the temperatures and mosquitoes at bay. It will be great to see our members with aircooled Porsches’ coming out to play in the cooler months. Looking forward to seeing them on the road. I touched on this topic in my past articles, but wanted to write about it one last time as my Presidential term ends in the next few weeks. Our Porsche Club is an all-volunteer organization. Volunteering is how my wife and I became involved and the most rewarding part of my journey over the years is having so many good friends in our club. The people in the Porsche Club are what have made my experience with this group so different from any other organization that I have been involved with in my life. Your Gold Coast Region officers and board of directors are also volunteers. They spearhead and make all the events we enjoy happen throughout the year. It’s a labor of love,
Support GCR Vote Now For The 2017 Board
but a commitment. So when you see them, tell them how much you appreciate what they do. We currently have an election for the 2017 slate of officers going on right now and ends on November 15th. Please vote, it counts. The slate of officers and board of directors have been assembled and you will have the opportunity to vote for those volunteers that will take your club into the next year and beyond. Take some time and review the candidates then go online and vote. These are the people that will lead the club forward and your input in very important. Thanks! We would love to have you get involved, perhaps attend our monthly meetings and see what perks your interest in the club. We have a variety of activities for all sorts of interests, but we always need to hear new ideas from our members. This is your club too! Come join us at one of our monthly board meetings the first Thursday of each month at the Porsche of West Broward. It starts at 6:30 pm, come join us. To become a board member or officer you will want to spend some time getting to know how Gold Coast Region handles each of the club’s events. Although the officers/chairs change from time to time, our bylaws set out terms that allow for continuity with experienced and new contributors working together. You will always have an experienced hand to help you if you choose to get involved. On another note, I’m sure you have seen our Kassette/website calendar this month

Editor’s Notes Like many of our PCA volunteer positions such as Autocross Chair, Drivers Education Chair, Concours Chair, Drive and Dine Chair, Social Chair, and many other key positions, they all take hours of work to produce the results that we want our members to experience. An average monthly Kassette issue requires 40-50 hours. I say this not to impress you with how much time we spend but to give you an idea of what goes into the running of a world class car club that earned the name of Gold Coast. While reviewing and selecting the articles for this issue I was once again reminded of the great talent and dedication that our members offer when taking time to share their Porsche experience other members. These articles are not just words but a slice of history as each of

the contributors tell their story. Starting with a special search for a Porsche tractor that concluded in Germany, to a ride thru the Miccosukee and Seminole Indian reservation with tribal escort, and finishing in France at the most popular race track in the world. Thank you to all that share your articles and photographs. You make my work a joy and help to educate and entertain our readers. We also have some of the best advertisers in the world that support us so that we can provide a hard copy to all of our members. Some regions cannot afford to offer a print copy and only publish a digital copy like if found on our web site. I have been told by several of the larger regions that have a magazine many times our size and a full time staff that they wish

they had advertisers like ours. We are truly blessed. I hope to see you at the first of its kind “Water Cooled Classic” venue all under A/C complements of Porsche of West Broward. Peter has worked very hard to spotlight these classics, I will have mine there also. To help you plan for the 48 Hours at Sebring Club Race, we have released the dates earlier this year. Being the largest club race in the world and the first club race of the year, PCA thought it very important to get the word out early. Mark your calendar and sign up to volunteer when the event goes on line. Enjoy your Porsche,

Say “ hello” to Butzi Those of you that read my stories in the club magazines may have wondered what happened to my interest in becoming a Porsche tractor owner after my visit to the Techno Classic in 2014. Well, here is an update: Back in spring of that year I had visited the car show with my dad and our neighbor Armin in Essen, Germany and fallen in love with Porsches vintage Diesel Farm Vehicles. Back in Brooklyn I joined the facebook groups “PORSCHE Diesel/Allgaier Tractor” with 483 members as well as the PORSCHE Diesel group with 431 members. I put the word out that I was looking for a Junior model in good condition. I had done a bit of research and given up on the dream of a Junior S. A: It was very very hard to find and expensive, B: it has no fenders and therefore no possibility of seating for guests/ co pilots AKA my dad. … Thanks but No thanks to that. So the hunt was on. I also checked out the official Porsche organized group for Porsche Tractor owners. This, I was unable to join. Porsche clubs in Germany are organized by Porsche direct and pricey to join. Of course you need a vehicle so I had to get the Tractor first. I did however check out the gallery of club presidents and was especially smitten by the photo of the gentleman of the Tuscany region. I

could easily imagine Signiore Tissi riding his “Rednose” through Tuscan vineyards… Whereas his German counterparts resembled a parade of ruddycheeked farmers he had that special Italian flair one seems to find only south of the Alps. Back to facebook it was for me. A tractor had to be procured first. Then I could go back to revisiting the idea of joining the more official circles of Porsche Diesel royalty… In no time I made some friends and had a few leads. By fall a Junior model that sounded promising was located not too far from my dads house near the city of Bonn and so I booked another flight and after a side trip to Milan and the Expo fair there (sadly no tractors were spotted) I went to check out my new dream Vehicle. Dad and I had some fun visiting and a deal was quickly made. The Junior was in good enough condition, not perfect but with no rust and a re-built engine. I asked for padded seat cushions in a cream color with red piping to match the wheels to be installed and the previous owner, Toni Schaefer, offered to re finish the fenders. He also installed new break pads and redid a few other things. My dad, ever practical insisted to have the vehicle pass the

German TUV, which is the National and mandatory vehicle inspection for road safety. A deal was made and the Junior was mine! Now I had to leave it there, which was hard enough. This gave my dad some time to clear out some space in his garage and prepare for the arrival of Butzi as we named the newest family member. With a birth date of 1960 and a whopping 15 HP he is at once my oldest and slowest Porsche family member. But at the same time he is the most fun and attracts by far the most amount of attention. In April I was back for dads birthday. Butzi had been delivered a month prior and there already had been several celebrations in his honor held in our garage. You see, my dad is a retired brewmaster and any excuse to have a few friends over is a good one. I had missed out on the “arrival party” as well as the “license plate party” I was told. The license plate has my initials on it and the lucky number 8. The annual fee to drive Butzi on the street is something in the neighborhood of $50.00 since he falls into the category of farming machinery! Not bad. The alternative was as a classic car plate, which would have cost considerably more and would have come with restrictions of mileage driven each calendar year. I can honestly say that Butzi has turned out to be a most affordable and enjoyable investment thus far! For now Butzi will
stay in Germany. 4 years ago I relocated to Brooklyn and am a lucky owner of my very own single garage. Other than that I am very restricted when it comes to parking facilities for my 4 wheeled friends… However our lovely neighbors Armin and Antje gifted me a wonderful little Porsche model Tractor which sits on my desk here in New York and reminds me of my beautiful rednose while I am at work. Anyways, once arrived in Germany I was allowed to be there for the “official naming party”. By the time I arrived I had pretty much forgotten how to operate the tractor. Thank God Armin, our Porsche owning neighbor had paid some attention when Toni had delivered Butzi and could fill me in. I did draw up a diagram so I would remember all the levers for the next visit. Especially fun is the “ do not touch” lever for the “ differential lock” in case I ever get stuck in a ditch full of mud. Or the break that can be split into left and right and operated independently from one another for an extremely tight turning radius. So needless to say, we had a ton of fun with Butzi. Just for the occasion I had brought a traditional German outfit with me. Now, we live close to Dusseldorf where this sort of dress is not very common and the day I wore it and drove with my dad through our little town to have dinner at a friends house we got a lot of stares and people waved at us and had a lot of fun. Butzi puts a smile on Everyone’s’ face that much is for sure! It has been just over ten years now that I bought not only my first car but my first Porsche, a 2002 standard Boxster. Back then someone jokingly told me that I had now officially “entered the cash vacuum”. I remember that this sounded scary back then. Ten years later I still have the Boxster. The car has a name: Felix How could I ever sell my first love? Felix was soon joined by “E.V.A.” a Cayman S, then by “BigBird” a Lemon Yellow 1968 912. Now “Butzi” rounds up our funny little family. But it’s not just the cars but also the friends that I have made in the past ten years that have made my life so
much richer! A few weeks ago a book arrived in the mail. It turns out that Craig Watkins who became a friend when I spend a good amount of time with the Flying Lizard race team dedicated the past two years writing an amazing book about Roland Kussmaul the incredible Porsche Racing engineer who spend 36 years developing pretty much all modern day factory Porsche race cars. AND he decided to send me one as a gift. What a treat. The book is full of amazing personal stories and anecdotes, a phenomenal read that I could not put down for days and carried around with me wherever I went. I highly recommend it for any true enthusiast (the book is available through the web site www.kussmaulchronicles. com) My neighbor Armin and my dad just helped translate a little hand out card into German for Craig. What a small and wonderful world this circle of Porsche friends can be, where an email often is enough and people on another continent are immediately eager to lend a fellow enthusiast a helping hand. I am off to Germany in October and am hoping to meet Roland so I can have my book autographed in Weissach if he is around. I wonder what he would think of my Butzi? Then again Walter Rohrl wrote the foreword to his book and last year Walter rode a Junior Diesel all the way around the Nurburging! Yes that’s right. If you don’t believe me you can google it on Youtube, it’s quite a sight. No left foot breaking but still… I say if Walter Rohrl can drive a Junior then so

can I! Looking back I can honestly say that buying that first Porsche was one of the best decisions I have ever made. “Cash vacuum” or not it was all money well spent and I and cannot imagine a world without the many friends and memories I have made since then. Xoxo, Felicitas

Taming the Snake
O
n July 24th the Club had a scheduled Drive and Dine, to Punta Gorda located on the west coast of Florida. With the drive estimated to be three and a half hours, it seemed a fairly long way to go just to eat, but there was more to this drive than you would think. You see there are two ways to get to Punta Gorda. You can cruise up Interstate 75, or drive Snake Road. (One guess which route this gaggle of Porsches took.) Snake Road starts just north of the Broward County Line on 75 and runs north, west and then north again for 133 miles before reaching Punta Gorda. I’m not going to tell you this was the best road in the universe created by the Almighty just for Porsches. That would be slightly stretching the reality of roads in South Florida. But for two lane excitement within the reality of where we live, this is a pretty good road. I had never done the Snake, so I had no idea of what type of road it was. What it gave me, was long straights, fast sweepers, undulating pavement, light traffic, great scenery and a ton of fun. I did this drive in my 968 hoping for

some “top down” fun, however our Florida summertime weather made me reconsider that. It was just too hot to put the top down! Anyway, having the top up at least muted the sound of those pesky 911’s, 911 Turbos, GT4’s, Cayman GTS’s, GT3’s and other 6 cylinder Porsches running free. Although the above cars could leave me for dead on the straights, the difference around the bends wasn’t that great. (After all, I was still driving a Porsche.) As for running with the faster boys, it wasn’t going to happen anyway. I have my own personnel speed governor that I have been married to for 41 years, and she kicks in anywhere from 10 MPH under the speed limit to full (slow down voice) when I push. So at no time did I act unlike the law abiding senior citizen that I am. (No babe the speedometer is broken that is not a hundred.) The group of about 40 cars did attract some unwanted attention when we were escorted through the town of Missaukee, Florida by the Reservation Police at 15 miles an hour. Although no one had been stopped for speeding, they felt the most effective way to control the situation was to put one car at the head of the line, and have others trolling up and down the side.

Nov 2016
The scene reminded me of rush hour traffic on 95, but with only Porsches. We reached our destination, The Wyven Hotel in Punta Gorda at 3:00 PM in the afternoon which was check in time at the hotel. This great timing allowed those who were spending the night to check in and immediately head to the roof top bar that hosted a beautiful view of the city, causeway and bay. That bar went from empty to full in 2 seconds flat after our arrival. A great time was had by all until we adjourned to freshen up for dinner that night. A group of more than 20 of us had a great Seafood dinner at a local restaurant that was later topped by drinks and live music back at the Wyven. The fun was enhanced when we were joined by a group from The Citrus Region that had had their own event also ending up at the Wyven. So it’s not difficult to imagine that a good time was had by all. It’s impossible to attend every event the Club has, and if you tried, you would have no time for anything else. But if you choose the events that appeal to you, you can have a great time with your Porsche and likeminded friends. Good Driving!

“It’s Time to Vote”
(no, not the Hillary or Trump show)
by Paul Raben, Membership Chairman As membership chairman a big part of my job is to keep members of GCR informed of the club’s activities. All of you (unless you’ve chosen not to) receive emails detailing upcoming events. This time of the year, besides the many events, the most important activity is voting. This is when we ask you, the members, to take a moment to support the club by choosing who you want to guide Gold Coast Region PCA for the next two years. In September’s Kassette we detailed the positions to be voted on along with bios of the candidates. Those of you who have been in the club for a while and attend events know who the
18
Die Porsche
candidates are. But we have had so many new members join since last year who are not familiar with these people, I feel it is important to take a moment to read their bios. Please read about the candidates so you can get an impression of who these people are, people who are willing give up their “free time” to run the club. As membership chair I want you to understand that volunteering to be an officer, director or chairperson is not as easy as you may think. All our events take months of planning and coordination. Whether it is scheduling track time, finding restaurants, hotels, museums or arranging other volunteers to help things run smoothly. Believe me that “free time” often turns into a lot of time all of us spend working for GCR.
Kassette |
Nov 2016
The reason I say this is we want you to get involved in a small but important way. When voting is opened online take a moment and vote for the people who want to be there for you. Show support for the dedicated people willing to run and who do the job because they enjoy being a Gold Coast Region member enough to want to give back to the club. Your vote counts and is important, so use it! So be a part of the club and take part and vote. Again this year we’ve included a short 10 question survey to fill out after the ballot. We gained a lot of useful information from last year’s survey about what you, the member, want from the club. And yes Palm Beach County, we did not forget you this year!

Autocross Update By the time you read this article the 2016 AutoX season may be history with the conclusion of our last 2 events in October and November. Additionally, as I write this article, we are looking forward to a 2 day Zone challenge AutoX in conjunction with Oktoberfast in Daytona. This event is hosted by Zone 12 and if this 2 day format proves successful, we may try it again at the Sebring Club Race in February 2017. For those that made the September 17th AutoX in Sebring, the event offered 12 runs due to a light turnout and great weather. The course was run on the concrete strip rather than the skid pad and offered great grip and challenge. If Saturday wasn’t enough, some of the hard cores stuck around for the Suncoast Region AutoX on Sunday. We anticipate several of these types of Autocrosses in 2017, basically 2 regions splitting the site over a weekend. Interested in seeing how your favorite autocrossers stacked up against the competition??? check the GCR website for all results. As indicated last month… BB&T will be raising lot rental fees significantly in 2017.We may need to do less events at BBT and/or raise the price for events at BB&T. (Also expect a much heftier price if you wait till the last week to register for one of our autocrosses) Next month we hope to provide a spread sheet with the 2016 class winners who will receive one of our coveted awards. Want to win some of that cool swag??? Come run the 2017 series & win. Here’s our tentative schedule for 2017, which is subject to change: Saturday and maybe Sunday February 4th and 5th 2017 at the “skid pad” in Sebring …Our traditional 48 hours of Sebring Zone Challenge. Registration is planned to open in late November on Club Registration…I expect all the GCR regulars to compete and win against some really good competition. More on this later. Saturday Feb 25th at Sebring ….Most likely the concrete strip. (In Conjunction with the Gold Coast / Suncoast DE that same weekend. Registration will open on Club Registration in early January) Saturday April (date TBA…possibly the 15th or 22nd) at BB&T Center in Sunrise. Sunday May 28th in conjunction with Zonefest 2017 at a site in the Tallahassee area. Hopefully many of the regulars will mark this date on their calendars and participate not only in the AutoX, but also the whole Zonefest weekend. Saturday Sept 16th…We’re back at Sebring for fall opener… Should be similar to the Feb. 25th event Saturday and/or Sunday in October Possibly in conjunction with Everglades Region at Buckingham Airport….If you never ran here you are in for a treat…hands down the best autoX site in Florida. Saturday or Sunday in November…possibly the 4th or 11th most likely our season finale at BBT. This event is our traditional PCA ladies go free day And don’t forget Zone 12 AX Events…We are working on a Zone Autocross series. Some of the GCR events will be part of the Zone series. Other events will include, but not limited, the

2 day 2017 Oktoberfast AX in Daytona….most likely the 3rd weekend. We anticipate zone trophies for class winners that do 3 of the 5 events. News, reminders and 2016 updates: • Everyone is now required to pre register for any AutoX on Clubregistration.net… Please consult the GCR or Zone 12 website and Kassette for all Autocross photos & results. • Porsche classes are loosely based on the PCR’s for medium size regions, with minor regional adjustments. The major difference will be the addition of SN (stock car/novice driver) for men and ladies. These classes are strictly for newcomers only. Please see Steve for any car class questions or if you wish to run as a novice. We reserve the right to make additional class/rule changes as needed. • Our 2016 series is planned to be 7 events. To be eligible for an end of the year award, competitors must run in at least 4 events in the same class. Each competitor’s top 4 finishes will be calculated and an end of the year class champion and possibly runner-up (depending on class size) will be chosen. In case of a tie, additional events will be added until the tie is broken. Year-end class champion awards will be presented. • Cheers! Hope to see you at one of our autocrosses in the near future • Questions…..call Steve or Dottie Kidd 954946-3196

Tech Corner : Once Upon a Time Article by Pedro P. Bonilla, Tech Editor
... Porsches came with a nice set of tools which included a jack, a lug wrench an and a spare tire! But those times are long gone. In order to save weight and manufacturing costs, they did away with all of that in 2005.
But this deletion is not an exclusive Porsche move. Most car makers adopted the same policy. You do get a can of Fix-a-Flat and an air compressor, but I wouldn’t recommend using that slime. It makes a mess and will cost a pretty penny to clean from the wheel. My recommendation is to carry a tire plug kit and a 12 volt air compressor (both available at most auto part stores). Also make sure your AAA payments are up to date and don’t forget your cell phone in order to call the flat bed if you can’t or don’t want to fix the inevitable flat tire. You may be thinking: “But wait, I don’t need a flat bed or a tire plugging kit because if Porsche didn’t include a spare tire or tools that means that my car came with run-flats, right?” You would be wrong if you assumed that. You can install aftermarket run-flats although they are very limited in sizes and widths and are also more expensive. I you purchased your car used and you wonder whether it has run-flats, you can check the tires themselves. They would
28

have one of the RFT (Run Flat Tire) symbols on the sidewall. So, should you install run-flats as your next set of tires?
First, a little more info on RFTs. There are two basic classifications: Self Supporting Tire and Support Ring System. Self Supporting Tires have reinforced sidewall construction that continues to support the vehicle even with total loss of pressure. This allows for continued operation up to the speed and distance specified by the manufacturer. Support Ring Tires employ a ring of hard rubber or other structure that can support the vehicle’s weight in a complete air loss condition.
If you can find them your car’s size and you’re OK with the extra cost you may still want to consider the following: RFTs should only be installed on cars equipped with TPM (tire pressure monitoring) because if you get a puncture and loose air pressure on a RFT you may not

Nov 2016
know it because of the extra stiffness of the sidewalls. RTFs don’t flatten down when they lose air pressure, they look and drive pretty normal, but RTFs can only be run 50 - 100 miles at a max speed of 55 mph once they lose air. Then they MUST be replaced. They cannot be repaired and re-inflated. In my opinion, the only real advantage of RTFs is that when you get a puncture, you don’t have to pull over immediately to change or fix the flat, which is good if you’re on a heavy-traffic road or dangerous otherwise. More tire manufacturers a expanding their RFTs so you may be able to find a set that fits your car. Some sport cars, such as Chevrolet’s Corvette now come wit RTFs standard. Maybe Porsche will follow suit. For more information on Run Flat Tires and more, please visit my website: www PedrosGarage.com. From the Members: Driving LeMans By Jim Stephenson 24 Heures Du Mans- The greatest sports car race in the world, located in LeMans, France. I had the opportunity to drive the LeMans race course just prior to the 24 hour race held on June 16 & 17 2001. It was fascinating for anybody who likes track events to be able to drive this world class track. In June, my wife Kay and I took a threeweek trip to France. Mainly, we wanted to spend several weeks in Provence the southern region near the French Riviera made famous by the charming book “A Year in Provence”. But, I also had to stop by LeMans and try to drive this racetrack, and take some pictures as a movie site. My interest was because I was trying to produce a movie named “Tracks of Glory” based upon my years as a PCA Track Instructor and 2 very interesting track students I trained. I was a SAG actor for 20 years, so I would play the lead role. A number of PCA track friends agreed to race at New Hampshire racetrack to be filmed for the movie. The movie plot ended by winning the GT class at LaMans 24-hour race. Some famous race drivers agreed to be in the film, including my friend Bob Akin, who raced a Porsche 962 (962 was the most winning race car in history) sponsored by Coke, and now owned by Gunnar Racing in West Palm Beach, FL. Hurley Haywood had also agreed to be in the movie, and maybe a â walk-on role by Paul Newman. We arrived in Paris during the final rounds of the Tennis classic at Roland Garros. We had leased a small car from Renault; a model called “Twingo”. It is a tiny car by US standards, being only 10 ft long and 5 feet wide, with a 1.2 liter engine, but fuel efficient, and easy to park in crowded cities and towns. The price was right too because a 3 week lease cost only $500, with unlimited mileage and including all insurance and damages. Renault actually delivers a brand new car from the factory, which you buy and sell back to

them at a set price $500. With such a small car, I did not think I would be able to drive very fast. But, what a surprise! We took the super highway toll road from Paris to LeMans, and could drive the car at 90 to 100 miles per hour (142 to 160 KM). Traffic was light on most toll roads, and speed is easy. At 100 mph, we stayed in the right hand lane, occasionally passing slower moving trucks and campers. We quickly learned to stay right because in the middle lane, cars would flash their lights if you did not move over. A few cars were passing us going much faster (maybe 130-150 mph). In 3 weeks, we only saw one police car. The speed limit is officially 130 KM, or 80mph. These uncrowded toll roads are a delight to drive, and I wish the US had similar type highways in the East. We arrived in LeMans on Friday noon. LeMans, I had thought was a small village, but instead it is a city of 100,000 population. Immediately, I drove south of the city to the “Circuit Du Mans”. The racecourse is 13.6 KM, or about 8.5 miles in length. Most of the racecourse is on public roads, which are closed to traffic a few days prior to the race. I immediately entered onto the Mulsanne straight, which goes due south for over 3 miles. Imagine a track in the US with a straight 3 miles long. This straight is almost the size of the entire length of Watkins Glen, and about twice the length of Lime Rock track. Formula Racecars reach almost 240 mph on the Mulsanne straight, so in recent years, the race officials added 2 chicanes to the Mulsanne straight. But, these are not the small chicanes like at Watkins Glen. The LeMans chicanes are about the length of a football field and are 2 lanes wide, so the racecars (like Porsche 962) probably only slow down to about 150-180 mph. At night, it is hard to see and scary, especially if raining, but you can’t slow down because other cars will plow into you.

At the end of the Mulsanne straight, going full speed, is a very sharp, 120-degree turn - known as Virage De Mulsanne. In real life, it is a three-way stop light intersection. The racecourse continues straight for almost a mile to another stoplight for a 90-degree turn named Virage D’Arnage. You then turn north about one half miles to the Porsche curve. Here the road enters the stadium area, over 1 mile long. The racetrack in the stadium area is closed off to traffic in preparation for the race on the weekend. However, we were able to drive into the stadium and pits to look at various preparations and transporters containing cars and pit crew gear. The weekend, while in Provence, I was excited to watch the race on TV. Seeing it on TV sounded good since it is very crowded with over 240,000 people attending the race each year. The crowd far exceeds hotel accommodations and parking. Most people sleep on the ground in the mud and rain. The LeMans hotel where we stayed said they were booked up race weekend for several years in advance. I thought the race would be a big event in France, and everybody would be watching on TV because I thought this was a great national event. Then I found out there were only 2 TVs in the Provence town Roussillon, where we were staying. The TV stations were not broadcasting the race except for occasional 5-minute update and a half-hour summary at the end of the race on Sunday afternoon. I was surprised that most French people were not even interested. One Frenchman explained the race was too long and most people were bored by it, much preferring to watch soccer or bicycle racing. But, for me, LeMans is very exciting and compelling. And later, I was not able to raise enough money for the movie “Tracks of Glory” because digital filming was not then possible for movie theaters.
