President’s Corner Ed Kohly- President

Touching from last month’s article, open voting for the 2017 board of directors and vice president positions will open and will start on Monday October 17th. Look out for emails with instructions on how to vote. Members who are in good standing from September 2016 are eligible to vote so please take 5 minutes of your time and vote for the 2017 open positions. We have a lot of qualified members who want to get involved and make a difference. At our last board meeting, I announced Kyle Rathbun was to take over as treasurer. Kyle has been a long-time Gold Coast Member who has severed many roles over the years including past president and currently as part of the 48 Hours Committee. Please welcome Kyle on board to continue his efforts to help our region for years to come. On that note, I regretfully need to inform our members of something that has occurred with Porsche Club Gold Coast Region’s email & banking accounts in August. It seems to be more and more common these days, but this time we were victims of electronic fraud. Our email accounts were hacked and we had fraudulent Transfers from our bank account.

The board and officers went into action immediately notifying law enforcement and our bank’s fraud department. We have been able to recover a portion of the funds but the investigation process continues. Additionally, we have implemented new protocols to minimize the risk of this sort of thing happening again. Thankfully it appears that this situation is behind us and we are moving on as strong as ever. I do have another announcement to mention. Our long-time social chair Beena Kohly, my beautiful wife is stepping down as social chair effective September 2016 after volunteering for the past 7 years as the social chair, planner, and all the other duties she helped with while serving not only as an advocate to help promote new members, but also to ensure all of events went as smoothly as possible and provided the best experience for all of our members. Beena and I are expecting our first child in April 2017. Those will be some big shoes to fill but Bobby Varela who is also a social chair is up for the challenge. Coming up in November is our final Autocross challenge of the year set for Sunday (11/6) followed by our stone crab drive and dine in Everglades City on Sat-

Oct 2016

|

urday (11/12). This event will fill up fast so keep a lookout for the email blast and register to reserve your seat, space will be limited. This year we are celebrating the 40th anniversary of the water-cooled Porsches’ on Sunday (11/13). Please RSVP on www. clubregistration.net which will be held at Porsche of West Broward. Porsche is celebrating the 40th anniversary of what they refer to as the trans-axle cars; these being the 924, 944, 968, and 928s. Gold Coast Region will gather the largest collection of these cars ever in South Florida. We are also going to be displaying the 1981 Factory Porsche 924 GTR that won the 1982 24 Hour of LeMans, along with other notable classic water-cooled racecars. Finishing up November the weekend before Thanksgiving is our annual Holiday and Awards Party on Saturday (11/19) followed by our annual “Porsches by the Bay” on Sunday (11/20) both held at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Miami. Porsches by the Bay is by far the best car show of the year and we anticipate it will be a sellout as it is every year. I will be there, will you? Until Next Month… Full Speed Ahead! -Ed

re we having fun yet? I hope you have taken advantage of the full slate of events that were provided

in 2016. This issue is loaded with many new events that the team is always looking for and some favorite repeat events that are in high demand with growing attendance. The cover photo and first article present a Zone 12 tour of the Larry Wilson Collection in Palm Beach Gardens. If you missed the event look for it to be repeated in the next two years. We have attended many outstanding collections such as the Elliot Museum, Collier Collection, Garage Mahal, and Gunnar Racing. Since the events are so popular we alternate between each of these so that all of our members can attend each of these outstanding windows into automobile history. If you have

Roger Fabel- Editor

experienced other collections in our area, please let us know so that we can continue to expand our tour selection. Speaking of outstanding events, we expanded our popular pot luck social with the addition of live music provided by one of our members, Frank Spangler who is a Grammy Award Winner along with others who provided a very lively musical night. The event was hosted at the home of Christy and Frank Spangler. Our events continue to grow with members stepping up to help host and lend their skills to the club. If you would like to get involved, our social team is always looking for different locations and people that would like to join the team. As we continue to grow in membership it becomes more difficult for a small crew to manage each of our events. Remember we are all volunteers so don’t sit on the sideline; join

the team and learn how much fun the GCR of PCA can be. If you joined us for the drive and lunch at Conchy Joe’s, you saw how much the event attendance has grown over the past few years that we have been attending this waterside seafood resturant in the north end of our reagon. We just finished the planning of the 2017 calendar and Conchy Joe’s along with many favorite events are included. The calendar will be published in our December issue so you can start planning early. Please check out a special event for 924, 944, 968, 928 Porsches on page 18. All of our cars will be hosted with A/C in the service bays at Porsches of West Broward. Also our membership chair Paul Raben has a message about the voting process for GCR. Roger

Larry Wilson Collection

On July 30, Zone 12 hosted a “2 for 1 event “ in air conditioned comfort. By now most of you realize Zone 12 is in Florida and July is well.....HOT. Zone Rep Steve Kidd reports that the 1st part of the event was a tour of the Larry Wilson Collection of Porsches and other dream cars. This collection is hidden away in a bunker like building and contains some of the most amazing street and racing Porsches, as well as other interesting and historically significant sports cars. What makes this collection unique is that the Owner Larry Wilson actually races or has raced most of his Porsche race cars. Our thanks again to Dave, Larry and their entire staff for sharing this piece of history Part 2 of this event was a short ride down Bee Line Highway to the Orbit Racing Shop. This race shop is absolutely the cleanest repair and restoration facility I’ve ever been in, however the real excitement is about the cars in various states of repair or restoration. While the oldest car there was a 1969, one owner 912, the majority of the cars were newer cup cars and other race cars....and of course a GT4 Clubsport being sorted out

for a customer. The Orbit staff provided a pizza lunch and gave a tour of the shop and showroom where some really cool cars are available for show and/ or sale. Thanks are also in order to Rodger Hawley and his staff for sharing their passion and some really desirable Porsches This event sold out in 3 days and was capped at 100 entrants due to size constraints....We hope that this activity will become an annual event so that more members can enjoy some of the finest 550’s, RSR’s, GT cars and everything in between. There were members from seven different PCA regions who attended

including visitors from Zone 1/upper Canada region. Our thanks again to The Larry Wilson Collection and Orbit Racing staffs and all the PCA members that made this worthwhile journey to see these great Porsches and enjoy the company of other PCA members from Zone 12 and beyond.

Pot Luck Music Social It was circa 2005, while living in the Washington, DC Metro area, we joined the Potomac Region (PR) of the Porsche Club of America (PCA). When we moved back to South Florida in 2012, we transferred our membership to the Gold Coast Region (GCR). Since then, we have attended numerous GCR events; too many to mention but one in particular we have always had a good time at are the Pot Luck Dinners. Since we enjoyed so many events, we thought about ways that we could volunteer. This year, we thought “perhaps we can host the Pot Luck dinner” and approached Beena Kohly (Social Chair) and Ed Kohly (President) at the Spring Fling picnic and volunteered our home for this event. After they had hosted many events at their residence, Beena and Ed happily agreed. They visited our home to make sure we could accommodate the GCR members, had enough area for parking and to get ideas for the Pot Luck set up. Now we were committed and had the motivation we needed to finish up some of those lingering household projects to have everything ready to welcome GCR members to our home. Frank has been in the music industry in one form or another for over 30 years and reached out to his network of musician friends and found some great folks to provide live music for the Pot Luck. As an added touch, Ed Kohly brought DVDs of the movies “Rush” and “Le Mans” that we projected onto a wall near where the band played. The weather held out for most of the night allowing members to enjoy the patio, some playing Domino’s, as well as spending time indoors.

by Christy and Frank Spangler

We would like to thank the GCR volunteers who assisted us with the planning, set up and clean up for the potluck: Beena and Ed Kohlly, Peggy and Paul Raben, Dottie Kidd, Jake Kooser and Christy Brigman. We would also like to thank the musicians for being so generous with their time and volunteering to provide us with live entertainment for this event. The first performance was by a duet, Niles Blaze (one of the best harmonica player’s Frank has had the privilege to play on stage with-Niles joined him last year in New Orleans, LA at the French Quarter Festival when Frank was playing with Guitar Slim, Jr) and Robbie Alter (who formerly was the bass player for Foghat and guitarist for Ian Hunter, he and Frank recorded the backing vocal track for “Slow Ride”. The 40th anniversary of that song that was just release on Foghat’s new album, “Under the Influence”. More about Robbie can be found on AllMusic.com) who entertained us with some rock and blues tunes. Frank sat in with them for a few songs. Both Niles and Robbie play regularly in the South Florida area and if you would like more information about their bands, please visit local entertainment guides to find out where they are playing.

Kassette |

Oct 2016

The second performance was by Latin Jazz/Blues recording artist, Jessie Campo who entertained us with songs from her new album “La Pasion de la Lupe” due for release on September 9th. To find more information about Jessie and where she will be playing live, follow her on Facebook: http://facebook.com/jessicampomusic. Porsches are amazing cars and we are passionate about driving our 944 and Carrera. It was really something to hear the sultry sounds of Porsches driving up to our house revving up our normally quiet neighborhood. As the saying goes “PCA is not just about the cars, it’s also about the people”. That being said, I would like to thank all the GCR members & guests who made the trek to our home in Tamarac bringing all those wonderful dishes, wine, beer & spirits. We enjoyed meeting and visiting with you all. There were quite a few new members mixed in with many long timers. Members came from as far north as Jupiter, to from as far south as Kendall. We had a terrific time hosting you all and were thrilled when several of you told us what a wonderful time you had. We hope we can host a future event and look forward to seeing you all soon at one of the many upcoming GCR activities.

“It’s Time to Vote”

(no, not the Hillary or Trump show)

by Paul Raben, Membership Chairman As membership chairman a big part of my job is to keep members of GCR informed of the club’s activities. All of you (unless you’ve chosen not to) receive emails detailing upcoming events. This time of the year, besides the many events, the most important activity is voting. This is when we ask you, the members, to take a moment to support the club by choosing who you want to guide Gold Coast Region PCA for the next two years. In September’s Kassette we detailed the positions to be voted on along with bios of the candidates. Those of you who have been in the club for a while and attend events know who the

18

Die Porsche

candidates are. But we have had so many new members join since last year who are not familiar with these people, I feel it is important to take a moment to read their bios. Please read about the candidates so you can get an impression of who these people are, people who are willing give up their “free time” to run the club. As membership chair I want you to understand that volunteering to be an officer, director or chairperson is not as easy as you may think. All our events take months of planning and coordination. Whether it is scheduling track time, finding restaurants, hotels, museums or arranging other volunteers to help things run smoothly. Believe me that “free time” often turns into a lot of time all of us spend working for GCR.

Kassette |

Oct 2016

The reason I say this is we want you to get involved in a small but important way. When voting is opened online take a moment and vote for the people who want to be there for you. Show support for the dedicated people willing to run and who do the job because they enjoy being a Gold Coast Region member enough to want to give back to the club. Your vote counts and is important, so use it! So be a part of the club and take part and vote. Again this year we’ve included a short 10 question survey to fill out after the ballot. We gained a lot of useful information from last year’s survey about what you, the member, want from the club. And yes Palm Beach County, we did not forget you this year!

Tech Corner : It’s A Dirty Job Article by Pedro P. Bonilla, Tech Editor

• • • •

It’s a dirty job ... but somebody’s got to do it! That responsibility falls to the car’s different filters, and each modern Porsche has a variety of them: • Engine Air Filter (981/982 Boxsters and Caymans have 2 of them) Engine Oil Filter (older cars have a spin-on type filter, new ones have an insert) Cabin [Pollen] Filter Fuel Filter (external filter up to 2000, after that it’s integrated in the fuel pump) Transmission Filter (Tiptronics)

A filter’s function is to scrub clean the medium that passes through it by forcing it through very small porosity in the material. In plain English, the filter’ s function is to stop dirt. No matter where that filter is located. Depending on the type and use, the filter could be made from paper, foam, metal, plastic and a myriad of other materials. Engine Air Filter: Dirt into the engine can cause scratches in the cylinder walls and also dirties up the oil. You need to stop that dirt. Most modern Porsches come with a paper filter or a combination of paper/foam. These filters do a great job at stopping dirt, yet allowing enough air through to produce the HP they were intended for. There are some myths that I’d like to dispel concerning air filters. One of the first mods people want do to their car is to buy an aftermarket air filter because it claims that it makes more power. 99.9% of the time that’s not true. The amount of air that can go into a normally aspirated engine depends on the cross section (area) of the throttle body, and the air filter is many times larger than the throttle body, so it will allow all of the air that that engine can breathe in. If you put a less restrictive filter than OEM meaning that the holes are larger, it’s only going to let more dirt through because as we said before, the amount of air is

28

dictated by the throttle body’s size. In the image you can see the throttle body’s size (pink circle) in comparison with the whole air filter in a 996 Carrera.

Then there are the reusable (oilimpregnated-gauze) filters which claim to let more air through yet trap more dirt because of the oil. The dirt part may be marginally true, but no more air will be sucked through because of what we explained before. But there is also the oil issue. The majority of these filters will let tiny oil droplets get pulled from the filter and into the air stream going into the engine. This air must first pass by the Mass Airflow Sensor (MAF) which measures the amount of air flowing in so that the computer (ECU) can add the correct amount of gasoline. But oil deposits on the MAF’s hot wire will foul the measurement and foul the MAF which is not inexpensive. Stay away from these.

Engine Oil Filter: During the engine’s normal operation tiny bits of metal and other materials are washed out by the oil and then trapped by the oil filter. These particles, if left unfiltered could eventually cause damage to the cylinder walls, and many other internal parts that need clean oil for lubrication.

The older cars use the metal spin-on filter, while the newer ones have the plastic reusable canister with a disposable, singleuse, paper oil filter insert, but they both do exactl;y the same job: stop debris. It is recommended that every time you change your oil filter you cut it open and carefully inspect it for foreign material, especially metal. This is a window into the engine allowing us to see what’s going on inside it and if any measures need to be taken before damage occurs.

Finally there’s the Cold Air Intakes that also advertise more HP. If you look at your Porsche and follow the path of the air going into the engine you’ll see that it is cold air, or at least ambient temperature air because it doesn’t dwell in the engine compartment. Modern Porsches channel the outside air directly through the filter, past the MAF and into the throttle body, so they all have cold air intakes from the factory! The best advise is use the OEM filter and replace it as recommended or sooner if you drive in a dusty environment.

Cabin [pollen] Filter: As it’s name implies, this filter scrubs the air coming into the car’s cabin. On a hardtop coupe I think it’s a great idea, especially if you are an allergic person and it’s spring time..... but on a convertible?

Most pollen filters are impregnated with active carbon particles to eliminate odors. Fuel Filter: On pre-2001 Porsches you can find an external fuel filter, generally in the tunnel where the fuel lines run from the tank to the engine. These filters are in-line type and have a limited life so they require replacing. Obviously, you need to keep the fuel very clean since you don’t know what’s inside the gas pump’s underground tanks. On newer Porsches, the fuel filter is integrated into the fuel pump and is

submerged in gasoline inside the tank. These are self-cleaning and require no regular service. Automatic [Tiptronic] Transmission Filter: This filter is located inside the transmission’s oil pan and needs to be replaced when doing the recommended transmission service schedule. It gets incredibly dirty and clogged at the end of it’s life and the transmission shifts much better after replacing.

As you have seen, each one of your car’s filter is of vital importance. Each one has a service life and should be replaced when scheduled or before, if your car is driven in very dusty conditions. Sometimes, even replacing them is a dirty job. For more information on filters and more, please visit my website: www PedrosGarage.com. Happy Porsche’ing, Pedro Ⓒ2016 Technolab / PedrosGarage.com

by Peter Olliviere On August 20th, 2016 the Region had its second annual Conchy Joe’s Dine & Drive. This event gathers Porsche drivers from Miami, Broward, Palm Beach and some northern arears and have them converge on Conchy Joe’s seafood restaurant in Jensen Beach to enjoy some great sea food. This year over 125 club members signed up to take the drive, bringing with them about 70 Porsches of every type and style resulting in a parade of Porsches that would delight any Porsche enthusiast. The participants met at locations in Davie and Coral Springs at about 9:00 Am. From these locations the groups caravanned to the check in point at mile marker 94 on the Turnpike. After making sure that all paperwork was taken care of the entire group headed to Conchy Joe’s. A scenic drive through Jensen Beach enhanced the drive to Conchy Joe’s where we were rewarded with a delicious lunch and great comaradie. Two years ago when planning started for this tour the goal was to introduce a little more fun into a Dine & Drive event. After all life is more than Porsches, driving, and eating, where’s the fun in only that? Conchy Joe’s was that extra bit of fun we wanted to inject. The questions back then was can the venue meet the requirements of hosting a Dine & Drive? Is it an

interesting place to drive to? Can we park a large number of cars safely? Can they serve a large group, and most important is the food good? Will the management work with us to create a great experience? Will our membership have fun? When all was said and done, Conchy Joe’s was able to meet and exceed all of our requirements. I can honestly say that the group on a whole had a great time. As plate after plate of great seafood was served, I didn’t hear one complaint. Just the opposite I heard nothing but praise. Not only was the food and drinks good, but the service was outstanding. Orders came out in a timely manner and were correct the first time. (I mention this because nothing can ruin a meal faster than bad service.) In addition, the Caribbean atmosphere of the restaurant couldn’t produce anything but a good time. The fun didn’t stop when lunch was concluded. A group of us had reserved rooms at the Marriott Hutchinson Beach Resort and Marina for the night – some for the weekend. That group retired to the hotel to recharge and then returned to Conchy Joe’s in the

evening for dinner and dancing to live Reggae music late into the night. Sunday some participants spent time lazing by the pool with cocktails. The perfect ending to a perfect Porsche outing. Next year they will be some new surprises coming to the Conchy Joe’s Dine and Drive. I can’t reveal the changes now, but can give some hints. For one the event might just have activities for the people in the northern part of the region to enjoy and at the same time compete with those in the south. For another there just might be a good reason to consider this a two day event. For now, just be aware that over the next twelve months you will be hearing more and more about the new Conchy Joe’s Dine and Drive.
