President’s Corner Dan Doyle - President

Hello, everyone! Woooohoooo! It’s October!!! There’s nothing like a little cool weather to wake up a Porsche motor! It’s time to go driving!!! Last month was a great month for GCR. The Kids Racing for Life charity event at Sebring International Raceway occurred on September 9 and 10. The kids and their families really seemed to have a good time. As well, drivers were able to participate in a DE and an AutoX. Later in September we had a New Member Social at Carlin Park in Palm Beach County. It’s been a while since we had a function in Palm Beach. It was good to see old friends and new members! To close the month, we had a First Timers DE on September 23 at Palm Beach International Raceway. We had over 40 new drivers attend the DE and their excitement was infectious. We hope to see them all at another DE in the very near future!

My personal thanks to the Board of Directors, Committee Chairs and volunteers that helped to put on the events last month. I also wanted to again thank Christy and Jeff Brigman for continuing to allow the Board of Directors to meet at their home. October is also shaping up to be another great month for Gold Coast Region. On October 14, we have Oktoberfest at Biergarten in Boca. A good time is sure to be had by all! We also have an AutoX scheduled for the same day if you just can’t stay out of your car! On October 15, GCR elections open. More on that in upcoming editions of the Kassette. On October 21-22, we have a DE at Homestead Miami Motor Speedway. Please join us as the weather should be fantastic and you will never love your car more than when you’re using it the way it was meant to be used - on the track!

As usual, Porsches & Pancakes is on the first Saturday of the month. Please take some time to join other Porsche fans and talk about your favorite subjects: your car and Porsche! Also, we have our Thursday Socials on the third Thursday of every month where you can do the same thing! Please check your emails and the calendar on our website for updated times and locations. These socials are a great way to get to know new members to the club and make them feel welcome! Drive smart and safe!

Editor’s Notes I guess this issue should be named the “Irma” edition. As you can see by many of the articles, they were composed just before or during the hurricane. Luckily I have not lost power as I finish the Kassette to send to the publisher to avoid any delays in delivery. Most of us in the Gold Coast region were lucky to avoid most of the devistation of the storm. Those in the Keys and in the Suncoast region were not so lucky, our prayers are with them for a quick recovery. Check out the article by Peter Olliviere about the Conchy Joe’s Drive and Dine event. Peter gives a great outline of the detail required to plan and execute an event.

Roger Fabel- Editor

We are all volunteers and the club could not exist without the help of our member volunteers. If you would like to get more involved please come out and join us to support one of the fastest growing regions in PCA. Thanks also to Dennis Lai for his photo coverage of the event. We always look forward to articles from our members. George Nunez was inspired by a previous article about a members road trip. He used the article to start researching and planning his summer trip with his son and their 1987 Porsche. As you can see by his photos and his great article, the plan was a great success. Don’t miss the “Hidden Mickey”, (special mean-

ing for Disney fans) in the cover photo. I hope his article will inspire other members to share thier Porsche experiences for future publications. The 2018 election bios are listed on pages 24 and 25 for your review. We have updated the online voting software to add more security. You will be receiving special instructions for online voting with the new system. If you need a paper ballot please request it from our secratary, Bob Varela. The election voting starts on October 15 and ends on November 14. Please vote. Active Primary and Associate members are eligable to vote.

Conchy Joe’s Drive and Dine by Peter Olliviere

The joy of volunteering.

I’m approaching this report on the Conchy Joe’s Drive and Dine from a slightly different prospective. Instead of the usual narrative of how great the event was and that the 120 members who attended all enjoyed themselves, I’m going to tell you about the saga behind the scenes. So let me get this out of the way. Over 120 people participated in the event with 60 plus of the most beautiful Porsches adorning the parking lot. The majority of the attendees were new members, or first timers that had never attended a Gold Coast event. The restaurant did its usual great job of hosting our large group, the food was excellent and served in a timely manner. The weather gods smiled on us even though it was hot, we did not get any rain. 16 people extended the event by staying overnight at the Marriott Hutchinson Island Resort, and that group had a great time. Once again the food was excellent and the company very enjoyable. This event started three years ago and grew out of a similar drive to the Dolphin Seafood restaurant also in Jensen Beach. The drive started to become an issue when members began to express dissatisfaction with the food at the Dolphin. I have to admit that I was one of those people. That little fact is important because what came next was totally my fault. My wife and I usually extend these drives by staying overnight and having a relaxing dinner somewhere. In this case after the Dolphin event we found Conchy Joe’s. I suggested to the Board that this might be a good alternative to the Dolphin, an idea they thought had merit. I didn’t realize that in this club, in the spirit of volunteering, if you think it up, you own it. Thus whether I wanted to or not, I became the owner of

the Conchy Joe’s Drive and Dine. Owning an event means that you have responsibility for all aspects of an event. You don’t have to do everything single handedly, many people will give time and effort to make an event a success, but you as the event leader are responsible that everything gets done. 1. Planning the event 2.

Setting dates, location, and times

3.

Setting the budget

4. Creating advertising for the Kassette 5. Putting the event up on Clubregistration.net 6.

Interface with the restaurant or destination location

7.

Interface with any hotel or overnight stay

8.

Track reservations and answer member’s questions

9. Make sure PCA insurance is in place 10.

Comply with all PCA rules governing events

11.

Get all waivers signed

12.

Plan the route

13.

Hold the driver’s meetings

14.

Lead the drive

15.

Act as host, big brother, and liaison throughout the event.

16.

Write the article for the Kassette

17.

File the required PCA reports.

Because of family illness over the past year, I was kind of ignoring this event just hoping it would go away. Fortunately that didn’t come to pass, I started to get questions about the event, and it reached a point where I had to get to work. With the help of several members, we did pull off the event, and it was a great success, but was it fun for me, no, let me tell you why. The morning of the event as I pulled a suitcase out of the closet, I threw my back out. As I lay on the floor in pain I remember thinking life does have a sense of humor. Since I was leading the event I couldn’t lay there and not go. So it was get up, take some pain killers, and put on a back brace, finish packing and head out to the meeting place. I spent the entire day leaning heavily to the side like a leaky row boat and trying to smile. You would think that life was finished with me at this point, but oh no! When backing into a covered parking spot at the hotel, my brain totally disengaged, and I backed into a supporting column. Needless to say the column won and I have no one to blame but myself. Am I glad it’s over? Yes I am! Even with my misfortunes I enjoyed myself and will volunteer next year. So another Conchy Joe’s Drive and Dine has been completed, I hope all the attended enjoyed themselves and will be back next year. I can promise that there will be some new surprises, so stay tuned.

From the Members: Road Trip .... 23 States 9500 miles in 30 days in our 87 911 by George Nunez Sharing the adventure during a Porsches & Pancakes, Fred says I should write something for the newsletter, several had enthusiastically told me they wish to do a road trip in their Porsche and some asked for the map, so this is the story. Inspired while reading a Kassette Oct 2015 road trip story by Bobby Chopra a couple of years ago I decided to do a grand tour of the US in our vintage 911 with my son who just graduated high school, a bucket list thing. Perfect timing would be early summer, before the weather gets bad and I recall that employers want the kids right out of college, they’ll have a harder time finding a job if they go on an extended vacation after college, so it had to be now. I spent hours on Google maps street view and a road atlas laying the route, with minimal interstates but plenty of the interesting roads especially out west. The estimated time would be around six weeks. We would start early June. We had restored the car in 2012, an unloved 1987 Carrera with 130k miles but a Finlay rebuilt engine, 30 years ago I worked on Porsches and my teen age boys were eager to help it so after 9 months work (retired, so I worked on it 7 days a week!) we had replaced or upgraded almost every system on the car. What had started with the pedal box repair finished with a glass out, interior out restoration. Since then we have had many in-state road trips to Gainesville and Sebring so just some preventive work was needed. This included new rear tires, a valve adjustment, oil and all filters, trans oil, fuel pump, pads, s/s brake lines, brake fluid flush, cap and rotor. Spares included belts, DME relay, window switch, and a can of oil, also the tool bag was filled with extra tools such as sockets and Allen wrenches. The back seat was for his bag, lap top, etc., my stuff shared the trunk with a 4 man

tent, liner, sleeping bag, air mattress, camp stove, the road atlas had to go under the pass seat. Amazing! Every cubic centimeter was used. A must have was a two outlet USB plug for the cig lighter. We head out early Monday morning and make pit stops at the Porsche dealer in west Broward to try the full motion racing sim there and do laps at Laguna Seca, UCF Orlando to visit other son, Gainesville and UF Gator Motorsports FSAE. While there we had a problem, the starter died and we had to get a push start. We called ahead to Autoatlanta and they had a Bosch starter waiting for us the next morning. Joest, the magician, was super nice and installed it while we talked...very laid back. Looking back, that was the only trouble we had the whole trip. Looking back the starter had once before failed to work years ago after a quick run from Sebring but then it never gave any trouble again and I forgot about it. North of Atlanta we visited Road Atlanta and finally arrived at some good driving roads through the mountains. SR129 then SR19 through Chattahoochee Forest, stopping at Neels Gap outfitters is a great drive. Son drove the twisty bits, let him have some fun and great heel and toe practice. We spent the night at Robbinsville, NC, the friendly bikers liked the aircooled 911, and recommended Cherohala Skyway over the slow, heavy traffic of the Tail, so

we took it, glad we did, no traffic. Highlights… Oak Ridge TN, American Museum of Science and Energy for guided tour and inspiring explanation of the birth of nuclear energy in the US. Bowling Green KY, Nat Corvette Museum and Motorsports track … did some laps there and saw the rock that crushed a Vette, wow, yawn. Dayton Ohio, and the USAF Museum, a must for aviation enthusiasts,… Muncie IN, Model Aviation Museum, Indy track and museum. Spend the night at Purdue then thru the miles of wind farms on the way to Chicago’s amazing Museum of Science, must tour the only captured German U boat, chilling experience. Finally saw another 911, on I-90 in Chicago and had a slice of deep dish at Pegoud’s pizza. On to Oshkosh, WI and the EAA museum and Minneapolis to Rapid City, SD in one shot. The longest stint yet. Clear blue sky to the horizon, straight I-90, little traffic, saw another aircooled but it was a vintage VW bus, shirtless guy, windows down cruising at 60 in 90 degree weather, but a lot of people passed us, like the little old lady in a pickup doing 100, we stuck to 10-15 over the limit ( 3600 to 3800 rpm). We did 446 miles on one tank (20gal), with a/c on. We had a great steak in the picturesque Rapid City downtown where there’s a president in every street corner.

South Dakota The Badlands, Mt. Rushmore and SR 385 north to Lead SD, home of the neutrino detector, the Sanford Lab Homestake whose visitor center, by coincidence, was across the street from our lunch stop at a Subway. It is the largest open pit gold mine now neutrino detector, amazing sight. Best driving roads…After a night at Buffalo WY, we got an early start for the drive through Bighorn Nat Forest, one of the best roads for driving and scenery. Off I-90 at Ranchester WY, we took SR-14, then at Burgess Junction took ALT 14. Far from the interstates we even hiked thru snow. Famous Red Lodge is the place to spend the night, turisty but small and quaint, we stayed at the Yodler Inn. The inn keeper mentions the Lambo club was there recently, say what? Up early the next day to drive one of the most impressive roads, the 212 through Beartooth Pass into Yellowstone from the north, so much better than the over- crowded west entrance.

A must drive. Highlights…Cooke City lunch, then through Yellowstone and not so nice West Yellowstone. We followed the Snake River south stopping just east of Twin Falls on 50, with spectacular view of the gorge formed when Lake Bonneville drained thousands of years ago, and tall bridge over it. At Bruneau, ID we took 51south, a desolate back road, no traffic or sign of civilization whatsoever, and crossed the reservation of the Shoshone Paiute to spend the night at boom town Elko, NV. Then I-80 west to Reno, and south to loop Lake Tahoe and stay for Fourth of July fireworks on the lake. Best driving roads…. 395 south from Tahoe to Lee Vining, with Topaz Lake and Mono Lake along the way. At Lee Vining we head west on 120, Tioga Pass road enters Yosemite from the east, again not the typical tourist entry point, the road less traveled. We are in a little white 911 in a line of tough pick-ups and SUVs getting into Yosemite. The friendly park ranger offers a lifetime national park card for ten bucks, senior benefit! Yosemite is fantastic but crowded. Leaving Yosemite, just west of Groveland, SR-120 became unexpectedly very twisty and a tight descent to the

Beartooth Pass

central valley. By now we had a routine where during lunch we would go to hotels.com and book a room where we would be that evening. We got some great deals along the way. It took us about three weeks to get to San Francisco, and we were having a ball too, meeting so many interesting folks along the way. One group, the cowboy Harley gang in northern Wyoming, were all actually German tourists doing a bike tour, they really appreciated what we were doing and were glad to see us doing it in in a vintage 911. Most of the time there was someone who would talk to us about the car, be we never saw another Porsche of any kind. At one overlook high up on Beartooth Pass a man enthusiastically came over said he has a white 911 too, but a late model TT, I looked around the parking area enthusiastic to see another 911 on such a cool road but was let down when he says “but I don’t take it out of the garage much”, I replied I have 150k miles on this and drove it from Miami; then his wife elbows him in the ribs and says “you see honey, you’re supposed to drive it”. If it were me, I don’t suppose the drive in the minivan was much fun after that. At a gas stop in an Idaho potato town an old timer comes over and tells me he has a 72 and after seeing ours, he wants to get his started,… had it for many years, he was so happy to see another aircooled and on a big road trip, …that was a good feeling that was shared many times. Oh, and

people are polite, usually in the mountain roads when they see a Porsche in the mirror they just pull over and let you through, wow, we’re not used to that in south Florida, we’d wave a thank you back. We saw the sights in San Francisco, visited the carrier Yorktown and Berkley, (the center of the vintage Alfa Romeo Giulia universe, I have one) then headed down to Laguna Seca then onto Carmel Beach and PCH all the way to LA (awesome) to stay with another son for a few days and have a family reunion. Callas Rennsport is a couple of miles away from his house and Tony was kind enough to put the car on a lift for a quick inspection, 6,500 miles and we found a loose muffler clamp and worn out from Michelins. Rons tires in Van Nuys was recommended by TRE, and early the next day, a Saturday, he installed a new set and aligned the front. The cars never rode so smooth and straight, no wonder Singer is just down the street and gets work done there. For a test drive we drove up to Newcombs Ranch for lunch, nice drive, but no celebrities. More best driving roads…..For the drive back to Miami we avoided I-10 and headed though Vegas, Hoover Dam, Mesquite then to the back roads of Utah going through Zion, Bryce Canyon, Escalante

and Boulder. The drive on 9, 89 and especially 12 is a must for the curving drive but for the amazing scenic beauty of this part of Utah. SR-12 has to be experienced on the way to Boulder. We then cut across southern Colorado through Durango and headed to Austin. At a friend’s house we did a quick oil change, the Austin dealer had the Classic 10w-60 oil and filter on a Sat morn. Surprisingly the car had not consumed any oil, dipstick still at halfway! After Austin we decided there was not much else to do but get to Pensacola and visit the Museum of Naval Aviation, something I’ve been wanting to do for years. Too much to see in one afternoon, but I’ll be back someday. They allow touching the planes, I actually felt how the automatic slats worked on a Me-262, amazing, and touched a genuine SBD that participated at Midway. From Pensacola we drove a long stint straight to Gainesville Florida then the Turnpike to back to Miami. Final thoughts; the cars was great, the 21 gal gas tank provided stress free range, the a/c handled the worst heat through Vegas, Texas, and the south easily, we wished for a sixth gear sometimes, we did not camp out once, it was usually too hot to

Escalante

be outside, we never had to touch any of the tools, I suppose it’s like insurance. Stats: 9,500 miles, 30 days, $1,050 in gas, 23mpg average, total Porsche sightings excluding the big cities, none. For Thank you to the Kassette for publishing that inspiring road trip story and all the folks that have told us they too want to do a Porsche road trip. Please check out the GCR website for more photographs of our trip.

Autocross Update

A

s I write this article, Hurricane Irma gets closer to Goldcoast region, possibly changing the course of future PCA events. Hoping everyone stays safe and can put things back together quickly after the storm passes. We will notify folks of event changes via e-mail blasts should activities need to be re-scheduled. By the time you read this article, we hopefully will have completed the September AutoX and are preparing for Event #6 on October 14th. Additionally, we will be gearing up for our 2nd Zone challenge event at Daytona during the Oktoberfast club race. This is a Zone 12 event and we usually get the best autocrossers from around the Zone competing for bragging rights. Last year was the first year Dottie and I ran this event and we were surprised at how cool the go cart track was for an AutoX. Unlike other go cart tracks, this one is big, not so tight and wide enough to put in some sloloms. Daytona International Speedway is really cool, so plan to spend the weekend and take in some club race action on Friday or Sunday. Upon entering the DIS compound, signs will direct you to the far end (Orange campground area) where the go cart track is located. Porsche classes are loosely based on the PCR’s for medium size regions, with minor regional adjustments. The major difference will be the addition of SN (stock car/novice driver) for men and ladies. These classes are strictly for newcomers only. Please see Steve for any car class questions or if you wish to run as a novice. We reserve the right to make additional class/rule changes as needed. Our 2017 series is planned to be 7 events. To be eligible for an end of the year award, competitors must run in at least 4 events in the same class. Each competitor’s top 4 finishes will be calculated and an end of the year class champion and possibly runner-up (depending on class size) will be chosen. In case of a tie, additional events will be added until the tie is broken. Year-end class champion awards will be presented. Cheers! Hope to see you at one of our late season Autocrosses Questions…..call Steve or Dottie Kidd 954 946-3196

Dan enjoys giving back to the Porsche community as an instructor to this day. He began his public service with GCR as a 2nd Alternate Board Member in 2011. In 2012 he became a true Board Member. Being a Board Member gave him an opportunity to interact in a different way with all of the wonderful people he had met in GCR. In 2014, in addition to being a Board Member, he became the Driver Education (DE) Chairman, a job he performed through 2015. Also in 2015, he continued his public service with GCR as Vice President, a position that continued through 2016. For 2017, he was honored to serve as GCR’s President. 2017

Steve has been a member of PCA since 1972, first joining the Potomac Region with a new 1972 914. Steve currently serves on the National PCA staff as the Zone 12 representative and as a Director on the Gold Coast Region Board, however most of you will recognize Steve as Gold Coast Region’s Autocross Chair for the past 14 years. Additionally, Steve has served as GCR President (2010-2012), Vice President (2008-2009) as well as a Director for many years. Just as important is the fact that Steve and his wife Dottie have chaired, co-chaired, assisted with and participated in most every type of Porsche club event. The Kidd’s have a long history of volunteering not only within Gold Coast Region, but also at Regional and National events. This includes not only Autocross activity but also DE, social, rally, tour, concours and charity. This teamwork and level of service to the club has earned “Team Kidd” GCR’s Family of the Year four times as well as the National PCA Family of the Year Award in 2015. Steve has owned nearly every model of Porsche from 356 to GT3. He was one of the first GCR members to be certified as a DE instructor, and has been active in driver education and track events since the mid 80’s. In addition to track days, Steve visits other PCA regions and participates in their events as well as help when and where needed, including numerous Zonefests, Rennfests, Parades and Spring Thing. This involvement has provided Steve with great ideas and contacts he incorporates into his GCR activity planning. Other notable contributions include Steve’s service as a committee chair (autocross) for the 48 hours of Sebring (Club Race) and co-chairing Gold Coast’s 50th Anniversary Zonefest in 2013, as well as serving on the Oktoberfast Club race committee and as a staff/Judge for the Amelia Island Werks Reunion. When not participating in PCA events Steve & Dottie can be found enjoying their Tennessee mountain cabin, diving for lobster or entertaining the grandkids. Steve is retired, resides in Lighthouse Point, and looks forward to many more years of enjoying the companionship of our Porsche Club family. He has served in governance roles within GCR for many years, has demonstrated the commitment and leadership to serve the club, and looks forward to contributing in 2018 as a Gold Coast Region Director.

Jake Kooser- Director Jake was born in Houston, Texas in 1968 and grew up in the deserts of Arizona and New Mexico. He learned early on in his driving career how much fun could be had in the twisty mountain roads of nearby Colorado. Most of the vehicles he owned were air-cooled Volkswagens, from a 40-horsepower 1959 that was mostly rust by the time he got it, to a ‘modern’ fuel-injected 1971 Squareback, so a rear-engine rear wheel drive vehicle really suits him. Jake finally got his first Porsche about 4 years ago, a 1986 Carrera 3.2 that the previous owner ‘dressed up’ as a 964. He really didn’t know the difference at the time, and got a great deal on what has ended up being a great car. One of the first things he realized quickly was the 911, with its additional horsepower, is not just a ‘glorified VW’. He signed up for a Driver’s education event within the first week of buying the car, and had a great time at PBIR, so much so that he continued to attend DE events and now acts as DE Registrar for the region. Jake hopes to continue with the DE program and become an instructor someday. He also enjoys Autocross with the club, having been an instructor and class champion the last 3 years in a row. Jake enjoys participating in all the events the club puts on, even if it’s just as a volunteer. He has worked at the 48 Hours of Sebring Club Race for the last 3 years and really enjoys working with everyone from the various regions. He was named 2015 Enthusiast of the Year and hopes to be able to contribute more to keep the club as enjoyable and fun as he has found it to be.

Paul Raben - Director Paul Raben is running for the position of director of Gold Coast Region Porsche club. He has been an active member for 10 years along with his wife Peggy. Paul early on became more active and volunteered at all of the events he attended. Eventually he started helping out with membership as co-chairman and took on the responsibility of the early facebook page and handling emails to and from members. Paul’s job as membership co-chair became more involved as the club grew larger and his participation became larger as well. Eventually the membership chair position became his after the previous chair-person moved on. While Paul has held this position for years now the job has grown into handling all the correspondence from national PCA and the board members, handling emails to and from the members and of course ordering badges. While the membership chair is an important position, like all chair positions in the club he does not have a vote. Only the officers and directors of the club have the authority to vote on issues that guide the club. Paul would like to have your vote so

Two Directors, Peter Olliviere and Bobby Varela will be serving their second year on the board. For 2018 we have two open Directors positions.

his opinion can help guide the club on proposals that are voted on by the board of directors at our monthly meetings. Many of you have met Paul at events such as the breakfasts and Thursday socials. Many of you contacted him with a question or a problem you are having registering for an event. Now Paul is asking for your help when our elections are held for officers and directors in November, when it comes time to vote Paul would like you to consider him for a director position. All board members and directors do a great job and if elected so will Paul.

Mike Robin - Director Mike has been a PCA member since 2006 and has been a Gold Coast Region member since 2010 and is looking forward to this opportunity to be elected and to serve on the Board. He enjoys all things Porsche and participates in many social events including Porsche’s and Pancakes, drive and dines with his wife and 1 year old daughter, as well as Drivers Education events. Mike is a passionate and outgoing PCA National Instructor who really enjoys teaching his students how to safely enjoy their cars at speed on a real racetrack in a safe and controlled environment. His first Porsche was a 1968 912 which was a bit of a rusty project car that turned out to have more rust than anticipated. This was fixed up and sold to make way for his first 911, a 1979 911SC Targa which he still owns and enjoys tinkering with. Currently Mike is also the proud owner of a 2003 911 Turbo which does double duty as a date night car and track car as well. Mike comes from a family who also enjoy their Porsche’s as his parents and sister all spend time enjoying and driving their 2005 911 Turbo S, 2000 Boxster S, and 1987 944S. You could easily say that the passion for Porsche runs deep within the family, and many lifelong friendships have been forged throughout the years while spending time working on and under the cars doing everything from engine rebuilds to oil changes. Lastly and most importantly, Mike has a wonderful wife and young daughter who both enjoy participating and volunteering in our many wonderful PCA events. Be sure to say hello at the next Porsche’s and Pancakes, drive and dine, happy hour, or Driver’s Ed event!

Tech Corner : Underwater Article by Pedro P. Bonilla, Tech Editor

By the time you read this article, rebuilding efforts will be well underway in the recently affected areas of Southeast Texas and Louisiana. Hurricane Harvey with its unrelenting rain and cat-4 winds caused catastrophic damage that will take years to recover from. Our heart goes out to all those affected.

The flooding in the Houston area was indescribable and there are reports that 500,000 to 800,000 cars were flooded by this particular storm. To put it in perspective, “only” 250,000 cars flooded during Hurricane Sandy in 2012 and that was considered very big at the time. Looking at recent US vehicle statistics Porsche has a 0.3% market share in car sales in the country. If we are conservative and whittle down that number by half, to only 0.15%, that means that 750 to 1,200 Porsches were flooded by Harvey.

But, what does this mean to you and me? There are several things to consider: • Used car prices will spike drastically once Houston dries out. People will need to replace their damaged cars as soon as possible and most will go to the used car marketplace to do so. As soon as the insurance settlements start coming in, you will see the market react upwards. • There will be many flooded cars that make it to the used car market. Some unscrupulous dealers and individuals will ship a number of those damaged cars out of Texas, will do quick repairs and will try to register them in another State with a clean title. Reselling flooded cars is not illegal, as long as the damage to the car is disclosed on the vehicle’s title. The issue with a flooded car is that although the carpet, seats, etc. can be dried and treated for mold, there will be inherent damage done to the electrical circuits and harnesses, including connectors and printed circuit boards that may take months or even years to surface. And that’s just with fresh water flooding, because if it was brackish or salt water the problems listed above are much harsh and also add the issue of metal corrosion, particularly in hidden areas, such as body panel seams and the multiple nooks and crannies within the vehicle. If you are in the market for a used Porsche, here are some of the steps that you, or better yet, your PrePurchase Inspector should take: • Try to get the history of the vehicle. Carfax.com and/or AutoCheck.com provide those reports for a nominal cost. Pay special attention to the vehicle’s title history. • Give the interior of the car the “sniff test”. Can you detect a whiff of mildew?

30

Die Porsche

Kassette |

October 2017

• Check under the carpets for mud or rust spots. Don’t forget the trunk(s). • Mud and debris collect in hard to clean places, such as the hood and trunk lids. • Rust on the heads of exposed screws in the engine bay, around the doors or in the trunk(s) indicate exposure to excess moisture. • Mud and debris on the underpanels is another good sign that the car has been under water. • Porsche places the Central Locking Unit (CLU) in many of its vehicles under the driver’s seat. This unit controls the immobilizer, alarm, windows and convertible top and is expensive to replace. It is highly recommended that it be carefully inspected for signs of water damage in its circuit board and connectors.

If you encounter what you believe is a flooded car, my best advise is to walk away. I don’t say that lightly. Even if the price is too good to be true, it’s best to walk away. I have seen way too many customers try to keep a flooded car, all with horrible longterm results and very high maintenance costs, along with unreliability due to the lingering effects of the water incursion. Pedro
