President’s Corner Dan Doyle - President

Hello, everyone!! February brought us the 48 Hours at Sebring on February 1-4. What an amazing event! It was a combination of DE for advanced drivers and three days of PCA club racing. If you didn’t go, you need to do so next year. It’s awesome to see nothing but Porsches racing each other! My thanks to everyone who put on the event and who volunteered. Your service to the Region is greatly appreciated. Also, if you haven’t volunteered for the event, please try to do so next year. It’s both fun and rewarding. This Month we have a DE at Homestead-Miami Motor Speedway on March 24-25. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: If you think you love your car now,

wait until you’ve taken it on the track!!! I highly recommend that you do so at least once as it will really show you just what your beloved car is capable of. You might even become hooked! We also have an AutoX on March 25 at BB&T for those of you who like to jockey your car around cones. There’s no better way to learn car handling and again, you should do it at least once if you haven’t already! Although not a GCR event, the 12 Hour Race at Sebring International Raceway occurs on March 17. It’s professional motorsport at its best. Take a slow drive up U.S. Highway 27 to Sebring and enjoy a day full of racing! As usual, Porsches & Pancakes is on the

first Saturday of the month. Please take the time to join other Porsche fans and talk about your favorite subjects: your car and Porsche! Also, we have our Thursday Socials on the third Thursday of every month where you can do the same thing! Please check your emails and the calendar on our website for updated times and locations. These socials are a great way to get to know new members and make them feel welcome! I hope to see all of you sometime this year! Drive alert and safe!

down and 1 to go. The Rolex 24 Hour and 48 Hours at Sebring race events have been run for the 2018 racing season. The 12 Hours of Sebring race will be run this month... or those of you that have never attended this spectacular event, I will give you a quick overview. Next to Le Mans, this is one of the best endurance races in the world and it is in our region. PCNA provides a pavilion with a display of Porsches and related technology for you to visit. PCA provides a hospitality tent for all PCA members to visit and

coverage of the race. Like the Rolex, the 48 Hours at Sebring was a spectacular event. More coverage will be provided in our next issue. Check out the flyer below for our Eurofest event in Plantation one week before the Sebring 12 Hour race. As a member of PCA you can see that we try to offer you a full selection of activities. This month we also have an Autocross, DE, The Werks Reunion, Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance. Enjoy your Roger Porsche adventure,

meet other Porsche members from around the world. The tent has snacks, seating, and a large screen TV. The tent is next to the track and is maned by each Zone 12 region. If you would like to get involved next year, let a board member know that you are interested in working in the tent as a volunteer. The shift is four hours and requires 5 region members. This year our team was led by Jake Kooer. Two of our members traveled to the Rolex for the first time and have provided an account with photos of their race experience. Thanks to the Alonso’s for their

years, that is how long I have lived in Florida. I moved here as an adolescent about to enter high school. The Rolex 24 has been a fixture on the sports car map since 1962, that is 56 years of racing at Daytona’s famed tri-oval. My wife and I have talked about attending the Rolex 24, as well as many other races, for the past three decades or so. A combination of an overly formal attitude about our work responsibilities (in retrospect this was probably a rationalization of our procrastination) and a false sense that there would always be plenty of time to attend the race meant that we put it off for decades. 2018 is the year we finally attended the 24. One of the catalysts was that Fernando Alonso, my ‘cousin’, would be racing at the 24 in preparation for a run at Le Mans. We are Formula 1 racing fans and have attended a couple of F1 races. My wife reasoned that if we are willing to travel across the pond for a race, we could drive up ‘95 just as well. So we were set, 2018 would be our first Rolex 24. We were rookies, newbies, first-timers….. WHAT AN EXPERIENCE! The Rolex 24 is one of the best racing ticket deals on the planet. When we

purchased our Rolex 24 tickets (a wristband, no need for a lanyard) our four-day pass ($85) included full access to the Roar. ‘The Roar?!.....What’s the Roar?’ we asked. A few weeks before the 24, there is a weekend of practice sessions for the various classes, thus the Roar. It turns out that the Roar is one of the best tickets for sports car fans anywhere. Full garage access, full infield access and unlimited entry and exit to the track. A weekend when teams are prepping, testing and refining strategies in a more relaxed atmosphere. Each day included several practice sessions for the various classes. We had full day garage access and plenty of opportunity to feel the sounds and smells of sports car racing. I love the smell of racing gas in the morning! The 24 was a different experience, more people, more tension, more excitement. The 911 RSRs are phenomenal cars. The engineering behind the cars is typical Porsche. We were surprised by the efficiency and small size of the crew supporting the two cars that raced (#911 and #912). We expected the factory effort to include a much larger crew of engineers and mechanics. The small team is a testament to the car’s engineering design and

capabilities of the team. The sound of the RSRs was by far the best of all of the GTLM cars in the field. It seemed as if the cars could wind forever as they accelerated out of the turns. The revised center exhaust for the 2018 season makes the rear of the car look more purposeful and the rear diffuser more effective at developing downforce. As a Cayman owner, it’s curious to see how the traditional 911 rear-engine approach has given way to a mid-engine design. You can rest assured that the decision to revise the RSR’s mechanical layout was not made lightly and that Porsche has determined that this is the best way it can maintain its competitive edge. Barring the screw-up with the Balance of Performance (BoP) for the GTLM class (the Ford GTs enjoyed an insurmountable advantage) Porsche

will surely be competitive throughout the rest of the season In retrospect, our lack of experience attending a 24 hour race showed. We learned that a 24 hour race is a lot different than a 2 or 4 hour race. The food concessions at the track during the 24 are very limited. You not only have to plan to stay warm and dry, you also have to plan to eat and drink more than once or twice while at the track. A 14-16 hour race day includes breakfast, lunch, a midday snack, dinner and possibly a late night snack, plan accordingly and take plenty of food and snacks. Remember it’s an endurance race for enduring fans. We are now hooked and have committed to come back for the next 24.

Zone 12 milestones 2016 and 2017 by Steve Kidd 1. Zone 12, Porsche Club of America, Inc. was incorporated September 2015 due, in part, to several regions no longer wishing to face the possibility of losing money at the Oktoberfast Club Race. Zone 12 by-laws were adopted January 2016 with necessary updates and corporate filings. Thanks again to the 2016/2017 Zone 12 Officers and Directors for a great 2 years. 2016/2017 officers were Steve Kidd, President and Zone Representative; Mike MacKenzie,Vice President; Bob Wilson, Secretary; and Scott Kee, Treasurer. 2. Resurrected Zone 12 website from almost non-existent to an award winning site with goal to be the “go to” place for all regional events in Zone 12 (yes Zone 12 won 2nd in class at the 2017 Parade for it’s website) . A huge thanks to Jeff Dorman for all the behind the scenes “heavy lifting” to make this happen. 3. Implemented a series of Zone 12 Presidents teleconference call/meetings to supplement the one (1) Presidents meeting required by National. These calls served to network with Presidents on a regular, more frequent basis. 4. Suncoast and Gold Coast regions continued to team and put on the the largest & most successful Club Race in PCA. The 48 hours of Sebring Club Race set the standard for how a club race should be run and continues to attract huge numbers of racers, sponsors, volunteers, visitors, and establishes a bench mark for organizational accomplishments and financial success. 5. The Oktoberfast Club Race in Daytona went from an event that struggled financially to one that brought in a significant Zone 12 surplus in both 2016 & 2017. This was done largely through conservative fiscal practice and a MOU with GT4 Clubsport which added approximately $30,000 to each event. The surplus in 2017 was quite an accomplishment in light of the fact that Daytona International Speedway increased track fees by $20,000 and one major race group did not participate.

12

Die Porsche

6. After no Zonefest in 2015, the Zonefest tradition was re-sparked in 2016 with a successful multi-regional event at Sebring which was not only fun but generated surplus for Zone 12. The 2017 Zonefest was moved to Tallahassee which represented the 1st time Zonefest had been held in the Northern most part of the Zone and hosted by a smaller region. (A huge thanks to our friends in North Florida Region for accepting this challenge) Another Zonefest amplification was more utilization of other regions assisting the host region so the workload was spread over a larger and more diverse group of volunteers. 7. In 2016 and 2017, the tradition of Zone 12 and it’s regions, partnering with PCA, hosted the 1st of the year and most successful Porsche Club Corral at Daytona during the Rolex 24 hour race. Several important enhancements were noted, particularly the Zone Representative wrote a a funding proposal to cover the unfunded mandates.... expenses such as the tent, tables/chairs and security. This meant the participating regions would no longer be asked to pay for these expenses up front...ie the zone would cover these expenses and get reimbursement from National as long as funding proposals were submitted and accepted. Additionally, new security measures were implemented to make sure drinks, snacks and amenities were enjoyed by the target audience (Porsche folks) rather than the uninvited “grazers” that often depleted region purchased supplies before their shift ended. Thanks again to all the volunteers that made these Corrals possible. 8. Continued the long tradition of involving volunteers from all of Zone 12 regions to staff the Porscheplatz tent and Porsche-only parking area during the 12 hours of Sebring race. The important distinction between the Corral vs the Platz is that the amenities are provided by PCNA, and Zone 12 provides regional volunteers.

Kassette |March 2018

9. Several Zone 12 regions (primarily Florida Crown and it’s concours group) and Zone 12 staff assisted the National team in putting on the first ever Amelia Island Werks Reunion in 2017. While a PCA National event, the level of success for the first Amelia Island Werks Reunion most likely could not have been achieved without the aid of local / regional volunteers. Thanks again to this group of dedicated volunteers. 10. Initiated several new and unique Zone 12 events, first and foremost was the Larry Wilson Museum/Orbit Racing activity in both 2016 & 2017. These events were fun, wildly successful and served to not only provide a rare opportunity to see some rare and exotic Porsches, but also to generate additional revenues for Zone 12 which does not have many of the same funding streams available to regions. A huge thanks to David and his team at Larry Wilson and Rodger and his team at Orbit racing....and Steve & Dottie for making this happen. 11. Encouraged more autoX participation and saw the revitalization of autoX programs in 2 regions. Spacecoast Region acquired a new AX site (a rare opportunity) and Florida Crown Region revived an extinct AX program (primary thru the efforts of Mel with technical assistance from Steve and Dottie) 12. Zone 12 Bank accounts grew from less than 1K (representing the surplus from the 2015 club race) to over $78,000 on 12/31/2017. Zone 12 corporate by laws provide the zone with authority to distribute surplus funds back to the regions of Zone 12 . As such, the Board unanimously agreed that 30,000 was surplus and, voted to distribute 3k to each of the 10 regions......a 1st surplus funds distribution to the regions from Zone 12

Fortunately for us now, advances in materials, in construction and in testing during the last 30 plus years have made safety helmets lighter, stiffer and much better at impact-absorption. They are By 1912 a few were using inflatable rubber head covers derived from aeronautical use. From the 1920s through the 1950s protective helmets were made using compressed media, such as cork or paper and these slowly replaced the original leather contraptions. By the late 1950s and early 60s, fiberglass helmets, also derived from aeronautical practice began appearing at major events such as the Indy 500.

The next Snell Foundation standard is due in 2020 and at that time the SA2010 will be deemed obsolete.

Consumer awareness has improved as well. Enthusiasts and racers alike understand what they are purchasing and why, and there’s no question that buyers are more educated and safety conscious than ever before.

Looking into the future, we can expect to see more and better insulation to reduce decibel levels inside the helmet, lighter weight overall, increased air flow inside the helmet, better perspiration absorption and improvements in visor retention.

In our original Tech Article from 9 years ago, we detailed the

Some auto racing series and tracks allow racers to wear a minimum DOT or Snell M-rated motorcycle helmet. These helmets are not fire-retardant, they are not reinforced for headand-neck restraints, and most importantly, they are not designed to withstand impact with a roll cage. Snell SA helmets are

Autocross Update

by Steve Kidd, Autocross Chair

The 2018 AX season has started and results are in for Event #1 Check out the photos opposite this page as well as the printed results on both the club race website and Gold Coast region website. Event 1 Recap...Zone Challenge AutoX 2/3 ....A big Thanks to Bert Smith Porsche...Official AutoX sponsor for this event. Autocross has become a feature part of the 48 Hours at Sebring Club Race, and was again run as a Zone challenge event....attracting the best PCA autocrossers from Florida and beyond. The course is similar every year as we know this design is not only safe but also provides an opportunity to run 2-3 cars at a time, meaning the event moves along quickly. I would say the event ran flawlessly, except for a silver Turbo dropping coolant on the skid pad. Luckily team AutoX brought the trailer with bags of Santi-dry and brooms, and with a host of volunteers, the course was back to form quickly. The 48 hour official Photographer, Juha, was on site taking pictures that can be purchased from his website. After everyone got 5 competition runs and the dust settled, top time of the day went to Cory Corona of Suncoast region driving a modified Cayman S. Top ladies time went to Tory Lewis....also of Suncoast region, driving a Prepared Boxster S. As with all Zone challenge AX events, everyone got a T-shirt and trophies were awarded to the top times in every class. This year was the 25th anniversary for the 48 hours at Sebring Club race and the 10th year Dottie and I have had the pleasure of hosting the Autocross for this event. I believe we were the 1st Club Race to incorporate Autocross as part of any club race and look forward to hosting many more. Event 2 3/3 at BBT...Our 1st BBT event of the year, and we ordered perfect weather Our November course design was so well liked, expect something similar on 3/3. BBT continues to be our “home field” and most events fill up quickly. Remember we have patient and highly experienced instructors to help newcomers at all our events. Event 3 4/7 at Sebring on the concrete strip, for a fast course on really grippy concrete. I wish more folks would make the trip out to Sebring as this site is similar to Buckingham field and we usually get 16 runs due to light turnouts. Event 4 5/13 a Sunday event at BBT. This will be our 2nd of 4 events at BBT and our 1st of the year on a Sunday. This will be our Porsche Mother’s day special....stay tuned for more. This will be the last of our winter / spring, Autocrosses, with action picking back up in September, October and November. 1. Russ stages autocrossers

2. AX Timing and Anouncing

As always, a big thanks to all our regular participants, instructors and team of volunteers that organize, set-up, tear down and do 100’s of behind the scene details that make these events possible. Last month we recognized Chuck and Wendy Limroth for above and beyond service. This events above and beyond recognition goes to Bill and Tory Sumansky for an exceptional level of volunteerism before, after and during the event. Additionally, Bill and Tory are taking over as AX chairs for Suncoast region and shadowed Dottie and I throughout the event, seeing how we do electronic timing and manage events so efficiently. Thanks Bill and Tory News, reminders and 2018 updates: Everyone is now required to pre-register for any AutoX on Clubregistration.net… Please consult the GCR website and Kassette for all Autocross photos & results. Porsche classes are loosely based on the PCR’s for medium size regions, with minor regional adjustments. The major difference will be the addition of SN (stock car/novice driver) for men and ladies. These classes are strictly for newcomers only. Please see Steve for any car class questions or if you wish to run as a novice. We reserve the right to make additional class/rule changes as needed. Our 2018 series are planned to be 7 events. To be eligible for an end of the year award, competitors must run in at least 4 events in the same class. Each competitor’s top 4 finishes will be calculated and an end of the year class champion and possibly runner-up (depending on class size) will be chosen. In case of a tie, additional events will be added until the tie is broken. Yearend class champion awards will be presented. No passengers except for an approved AX instructor driving or in the car instructing. Questions…..call Steve or Dottie Kidd 954-946-3196 For 2018 our advice is please register early. As a reward, early registrants will see no increase in price, however those registering the last week before the event will see an increase in event registration price. While we typically do not allow on-site registration, if we do, your registration fee will increase to $60. ….Also.... we heard a rumor that live timing will be coming soon. What this means is that the results will be available on your cell phone as soon as a run is completed. This will allow you to check your best times vs the best times of your competitors with out having to wait for a printout or posting. Stay tuned for more on this! 3. Dottie and Jack at Registration
