I offer you my company’s full service

TV & Video production services at a significantly discounted rate. You see, it really is amazing to be a member of a very unique group of men and women who appreciate performance, style and the thrill of managing a sophisticated piece of machinery traveling at the ragged edge on a beautiful road somewhere in the world! Moreover, to the uninitiated, words do not communicate the feeling you get when the outline of the oncoming car becomes obvious, lights flash, heads nod as a brother or sister go screaming past. I

have had the distinct pleasure of enjoying thousands of those sweet moments as the very proud owner of a 1969, 912 ... that I purchased (as a very young guy) in 1970! Yes, I owned my 912 for over 46 years and YES, if that car could talk ... Through many years of SCCA/IMSA racing and thrashing my street 912 in every conceivable manner my love for our pedigree has only grown stronger and deeper. I appreciate excellence, performance and balls-to-the-wall fun, which is one of the reasons I have been

involved in a multi-year complete restoration of the 912 with the great folks at Foreign Affairs Motorsport. If you have any TV or video needs, please contact me to discuss your project. My company can produce anything from a 30 second commercial to a Web promotion to a full-blown two-hour documentary. We have our own independent studio in Lake Worth, Florida with a soundstage and complete green screen chroma-key facility that enables live studio programs we can broadcast anywhere in the world.

Bottom Line: My team and I promise you the same performance that we owners expect from our personal Poorsh ... oops, I mean from our beloved PORSCHE!!

President’s Corner Dan Doyle - President

Happy March, everyone! The 48 Hours at Sebring occurred on February 2-5 at Sebring International Raceway in beautiful Sebring, Florida. This club race happens every year at about the same time and is, if I’m not mistaken, the largest club race in the U.S. It was incredible to see so many Porsches battling it out on the track, particularly because they were owned by people like me and you who simply love Porsches and racing! We also had a great time learning about Concours at GCR’s own Concours College/Tech Session on February 18 at Foreign Affairs. Peter Olliviere and Fred Kohly are experts in this area and their hints/tips as to car beautification were well received – unless your not one who likes to keep your car clean! Finally, our first Driver Education event of the year was

on February 25-26 at Sebring. This was a joint event with Suncoast Region. We had an incredible turn out and everyone had a great time. We had many new students but always need more. Please join us for a DE or Autocross event, even if it’s only to watch. You might just find yourself wanting to join in all the fun!!! As usual, we have a bunch of Porsche events lined up for this month. The GCR picnic at C.B. Smith Park is on Saturday, March 11. Please join us and bring the family as there is fun for all! The gathering of cars and members really makes for an amazing time. On March 18th, come out to Sebring International Raceway in Sebring, Florida for the 65th Annual Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring. If you haven’t been to a professional race, this is the one to go to. If you get the chance, stay into the night to watch the brake

rotors glow! On March 25-26 we have a Driver Education (DE) event at Homestead Miami Speedway with our friends at PBOC. As most know, I can’t say enough about DE. Just do it! You’ll have a blast and truly learn to appreciate your car and become a better driver. As usual, Porsches & Pancakes is on the first Saturday of the month. Please take some time to join other Porsche fans and talk about your favorite subjects: your car and Porsche! Also, we have our Thursday Socials on the third Thursday of every month where you can do the same thing! Please check your e-mails and the calendar on our website for updated times and locations. I’m looking forward to seeing all of you at some point in 2017! Drive smart!

et's go racing. That is what over 400 PCA member racers said attending the 48 Hours at Sebring the first weekend in February. The event has been held for twenty four years and is the largest PCA Club Race in the world. Support for the event is provided by a committee of Gold Coast and Suncoast members along with volunteers from both regions. The Florida team is joined by PCA National Club Race officials and theSebring track support team. Each year we keep raising the bar and a near perfect event somehow gets even better. Next year will mark the 25th year of this special event. This Kassette issue is focused on the 2017 event and we have several great

articles and photos on Sebring, the 48 Hour event, volunteering for the event, and a special award for Co-chair, Dan Smithyman. Dan is a past DE chair, GCR president and serves as the 48 Hour cochair. Dan also has a great writing style that you can enjoy by reading “The University of Sebring Revisited”. Congratulations to Dan for another great 48 Hour event and being awarded the Friedman Spirit Award. Stay tuned for more articles from Dan in the future. The year is just getting started and our members are enjoying the calendar full of events for 2017. The Rolex 24 saw a record attendance and the 48 Hours event had a good representation of Gold Coast volunteers. If you are new to the event

contact Jerry Daily or Sherry Fabel about volunteering for next year. Read the article by one of our volunteers to find out more. You can see the race up close and personal as exibited by Gary’s photos on page 19. If you are a new member and would like to learn more about our program, please attend any of the events and our members will provide answers and guidance on how to become more involved. We welcome articles from our members. This month we have an article from a GCR member that is too young to write so she had to dictate the article to her dad. If you would like to share your Porsche experience please send up to one page articles in Word, Times New Roman, 10pt along with high resolution photo files. Enjoy you Porsche. Roger

More Than 400 Porsches Kick Off 2017 Porsche Club of America Club Racing Season at 48 Hours at Sebring

Article by Kate Taylor SEBRING, Fla. (Feb. 8, 2017) - More than 400 Porsches competed at one of the largest Porsche Club of America (PCA) Club Racing events of the year over the weekend, kicking off the 2017 PCA Club Racing season. With more than 200 volunteers operating the massive four-day event, PCA drivers enjoyed beautiful weather at the 24th annual 48 Hours at Sebring presented by Champion Porsche at the iconic Sebring International Raceway. “Drivers from all over the country were able to race again for the first time since 2016 and I’m thrilled to be a part of this huge event once again,” said Josh

Photo by Juha Lievonen Breckeen, co-chairman of the 48 Hours at Sebring. “I want to thank all of our volunteers for the time and energy they put into the 48 Hours at Sebring. It was very well received and we all love hosting one of the largest PCA events.” The 2016 PCA Club Racing National Championship Series Awards Dinner, which is hosted by the PCA Club Racing Committee, was held on Thursday, Feb. 2 at the Chateau Elan at Sebring International Raceway. The dinner banquet honored 2016 podium winners and celebrated the start of the 2017 race season. “The 2016 PCA Club Racing National Championship Series Awards Dinner

kicked off our Porsche-filled weekend with a bang,” said Vicki Earnshaw, PCA Club Racing chair. During the banquet, Earnshaw awarded Dave Elsner with the 2016 Michael Melton Memorial Rookie of the Year Award, which commemorates Michael Melton, former PCA Club Racing driver and editor of Club Racing News. Melton sadly passed away in 1999 of pancreatic cancer. The award winner is chosen by PCA stewards, who review a large group of rookie racers each year - all of whom participated safely and successfully in at least five races during their rookie season.

Earnshaw awards Smithyman with the Friedman Spirit Award. 48 Hours at Sebring co-chairman Dan Smithyman was awarded with the Friedman Spirit Award for all the work he has done on the 48 Hours at Sebring event over the years. 2017 marks the inaugural year for this prestigious award. “I am so honored to receive this heartfelt award,” said Smithyman. “PCA is all about camaraderie and friendship, so I’m lucky to be a volunteer for this outstanding organization.” Over the weekend, drivers enjoyed three facets on the world-renowned, 17-turn, 3.74-mile circuit at Sebring - PCA Club Racing, Advanced Solo Driver’s Education (DE) and autocross. The Green Group, which included the Stock Class cars D through K, as well as the SP911s, GT5s and GTC1s, had around 60 entries. Jimmy Martin came in third place in Sprint 1 and improved to a second-place finish in Sprint 2, while Andy Hansen won Sprint 1 and Kevin Violette won Sprint 2. The Orange Group, which consisted of SP1, 2 and 3 Class Cars, a majority of those being 944s and Boxsters, had around 55 entries. In Sprint 1, Chris Drake came in first with John Gladwill and Daniel Martinson rounding out the podium in second and third, respectively. In the SP3 Class, Dan Martinson and Karl Poeltl went nose-to-tail much of the weekend with only tenths of a second separating them. In the SP2 Class, the reigning 944 Cup National Champion, Fred Beasley, demonstrated once again that his crown is well deserved with additional wins over the weekend. “The 48 Hours of Sebring continues to be one of the best events each year for the 944 Cup classes with tremendous turnouts and exciting racing on a historically significant track,” said Dave Derecola, PCA Club Racing 944 Cup National Coordinator. “Sebring should be on every driver’s bucket list.”

In other 48 Hours at Sebring racing news, Andy Wilzoch finished second in Sprint 1 with the fastest overall lap time of 2:04.767 and then came back to beat the competition by winning Sprint 2 in his Flying Lizard 2016 Porsche GT3R. Wilzoch competed in the same car in the 2016 Pirelli World Challenge. He was part of the Blue Group, which consisted of some of the fastest cars at the event, including GTA and GTC cars. PCA member Roger Johnson spent his fifth year at the 48 Hours at Sebring liveblogging the first 2017 club race. Fans, friends and family were able to check out the action live throughout the weekend on the 48 Hours at Sebring website and the PCA.org home page. Once again, the 48 Hours at Sebring was hugely successful, with racers, volunteers and PCA members relishing the weekend filled with 70-degree weather and exciting races. “PCA Club Racing is celebrating yet another season of great racing and we couldn’t be more excited about it,” Earnshaw said.

While the rest of the article, from a DE perspective may not be relevant here, the Sebring experience certainly is. FIRST MEMORIES My first memories of Sebring, of course, come from the annual 12 Hour race. Oh those brave men in their racing machines! Names like Hurley Haywood, Dan Gurney, Mario Andretti, Phil Hill, Vick Elford, Joe Siffert, and Peter Greg come quickly to mind. The Porsche brand of course has fared well at Sebring. Porsche still owns the most overall victories in the 12 Hour with 18, as well as plenty of other records. To me the most significant record is “Most consecutive wins” at 13. That’s over a decade of domination from 1976 to 1988. Porsche cars like the Carrera RSR, the 935 and the unbeatable 962 ruled the endurance racing world and gave Porsche fans all over the world thrills with win after win at the 12 Hours of Sebring. I fell in love with Porsche and Sebring during those years. The fact that we are able to drive Porsches around the same hallowed race track still blows my mind. Of course, at the 48 Hours at Sebring Club Race, we have been doing exactly that for 24 years. I first got involved with the 48 Hours in the year 2002 as a driver. By that time the event was already steeped in 10 years of its own history! I still remember the first time I crossed the bridge heading into the paddock. It

was an amazing spectacle that completely overwhelmed my senses. Momentarily pausing at the top of the bridge, I tried to take it all in…there In front of me, to the right, stretched out a seemingly endless ocean of multi colored trucks and trailers, with people buzzing around everywhere…the paddock at Sebring. Below, straight ahead, the paddock road beckoned, lined with sponsors and vendors with their flags and banners flying as they displayed their wares. I have to tell you, I felt like waving back to everyone as we drove down that road for the first time. Oh yeah, then there were the cars… hundreds of colorful Porsche race cars of every era. From a healthy group of air cooled classics in PCA Stock classes to the ever growing GTC classes, all right there, together, in Florida ready for a grand weekend. To the left I could see the front straight of the Sebring race track. It was truly a sight to behold; the vision was burned into my mind forever; I fell in love with the 48Hours at Sebring that day. I have been back every year since. As this event has evolved over the past 25 years it has become one of the largest events of its kind in the world. With the Club Race entrants, Test and Tune, Advanced Solo DE, and Autocross there are usually over 400 Porsche cars and their Drivers from all over the world attending. And why not! Is it the Florida in February part? Or perhaps because we are at one of the most historic race tracks in America with a thousand or so of your fellow Porsche club friends that makes this event hit all the right buttons. Maybe it’s just the racing. There is a lot to like going on here. Aside from the obvious fun and games going on and around the “cars on course” there is the “off track” activities to consider.

16

Die Porsche

For the event participants there is the usual Saturday Night Event Dinner with loads of entertainment and the famous Sebring Charity Auction, Saturday night, by the way, has a brand new menu every year now. SPEED SHOWCASE The biggest buzz this year though, has been around the Friday night SPEED SHOW CASE a Sponsor/Vendor expo. Last year was a phenomenal success with food, beverages and plenty of bargains form the companies that support us all. There was also a surprise demonstration of the, then as yet to be unveiled GT4 with a very informative discussion. Not to be undone, for this year the event organizers, and Champion Porsche the Presenting Sponsor, have put together a once in a lifetime up close and personal visit with one of Porsche’s most iconic machines…don’t miss it. Friday night at the track, nice, be there. THE PLACE TO BE From a PCA National perspective, Sebring is the place to be. Every year we extend our most sincere invitation to the PCA EC and all of the Club Race big

wigs, most usually come. The 48Hours at Sebring has been on the Club Race calendar since 1992. One of the largest events and the first on the yearly Club Race calendar, for many PCA Members it is an annual trek. In recent years, it has been our pleasure to host the PCA National Awards Banquet. This prestigious event honors the past years Champions. It is an excellent opportunity for the top drivers and PCA Organizers to come together and celebrate a year of supreme effort and achievement. It has also been an honor and a privilege in recent years to be the training ground for some PCA Club Race officials. Because, Sebring “just works” we have often had our share of Stewards in Training, Scrutinizers in Training and other PCA officials and Club Race Organizers looking to learn. As always all are welcomed to enter the University of Sebring to learn and grow and just have a great adventure. I truly hope to see you in February, Dan Smithyman Co-Chair 48 Hours at Sebring PCA Club Race

Volunteering a Day at Sebring As a fairly new member of the PCA and the Gold Coast region, it was an honor to recently volunteer for one shift at PCA’s 48 Hours at Sebring Club Race. My colleague and I were impressed by Charlie and Jeff, the veteran SCCA officials working the turn. Waiting for the morning fog to lift, they patiently explained our duties and demonstrated the various flags deployed to warn approaching drivers of the occasional hazard lurking just out of

view around Turn 7, an exciting hairpin following a long straight. With each successive race, we slowly but surely progressed to being useful “eyes and ears” for these gentlemen, spotting various mishaps and getting the word out through flags and headsets. It was also an opportunity to learn a bit more about driving technique at high speed including last-minute braking and centrifugal loading on the tight turn.

March 2017

Following our volunteer shift, we had the opportunity to dine and chat with fellow club members, sporting our newly acquired, one-of-a-kind Sebring 48-Hour t-shirts. All-in-all, an exciting and educational experience we highly recommend to others in the PCA. Involvement comes in many forms…sometimes not behind the steering wheel! Autocross Update By the time you read this article the first 2 autocrosses of 2017 will be history, however, lucky I can report on event 1 which was our Zone 12 challenge event, held in conjunction with the 48 hours of Sebring club race on February 4th . While attendance was down from previous years, enthusiasm was not and we had some excellent competition and one of the most flawlessly run events ever. Thanks again to Bert Smith Porsche who has been our Zone challenge AX sponsor for many years, this year providing those bright green t-shirts to everyone and the nice acrylic trophies to class winners. This year, both Men’s (Cory Corona) and Ladies (Tory Lewis) FTD’s went to Suncoast region. For a complete listing of times, and maybe a few pictures, visit the GCR website or the Zone 12 website or the Club race website. So whether your passion is autocross, driver education, racing, volunteering or spectating there is something at the 48 hours of Sebring event for everyone....make sure you mark your calendar for this event in 2018 and join the fun. It’s 4 days of merriment and the autoX is always the Saturday of that weekend. 2017 will follow the same pattern of many other years....7 events ….4 at BBT center and 3 at Sebring. In addition, we are planning 4 Zone challenge AX events (hey...it’s good to have an autoX chair that’s also the Zone 12 Representative), with individual autoX trophies for class winners at each challenge event. The 4 challenge events are: The Sebring 48 hour Club Race, Zonefest, Oktoberfast and a multiregional AX at Buckingham airport, Florida’s premier AutoX site, located in Ft. Meyers Here’s our tentative schedule for 2017, which is subject to change: #1 Saturday February 4th 2017 at the “skid pad” in Sebring

Date change to 4/22 is a possibility...Increased registration rates at this and all BBT events, due to increase in site rental. News, reminders and 2017 updates: • Everyone is now required to pre register for any AutoX on Clubregistration.net… Please consult the GCR or Zone 12 website and Kassette for all Autocross photos & results. • Porsche classes are loosely based on the PCR’s for medium size regions, with minor regional adjustments. The major difference will be the addition of SN (stock car/novice driver) for men and ladies. These classes are strictly for newcomers only. Please see Steve for any car class questions or if you wish to run as a novice. We reserve the right to make additional class/ rule changes as needed. • Our 2017 series are planned to be 7 events. To be eligible for an end of the year award, competitors must run in at least 4 events in the same class. Each competitor’s top 4 finishes will be calculated and an end of the year class champion and possibly runner-up (depending on class size) will be chosen. In case of a tie, additional events will be added until the tie is broken. Yearend class champion awards will be presented. • No passengers except for an approved AX instructor driving or in the car instructing. • Questions…..call Steve or Dottie Kidd 954-946-3196 • GCR members should try PCA AutoX events hosted by other regions. Last year Dottie and I attend AutoX events hosted by Suncoast, Everglades, Citrus, Sonnenschein and Peachstate regions. This year Florida Crown has a new AX program with their 1st Event February 18, and Spacecoast region finally found a new AutoX site and will be getting their program re-started later this year. Join us for a road trip up the coast....meet new friends and course challenges.

2003 C4 6 Speed Cab Cabriolet (blue top) w/ 70,000 miles. Runs and drives perfect , everything works. VERY clean inside and out. All maintenance was done early. Has new Kuhmo tires 295/30/18 and 225/40/18. Brand new pads (hawk) and rotors (textar) all the way around. Only wear is on the driver seat which has some small creases. This was my father’s car and he passed away in October. Garage kept its whole life. I honestly have 4 cars already and do not have room for a 5th anymore . I want to make sure it goes to someone who knows and loves these cars as much as my father did. Serious inquiries only. Located in Boca Raton 954-461-5862 ask for Drew.

Tech Corner : Porsche Numerology Article by Pedro P. Bonilla, Tech Editor

There are very few that can keep up with the numerology and the acronyms that Porsche has used throughout its years of existence. The first Porsche sports car was the 4 cylinder, mid-engined 356 (1948). Eventually the engine got moved rearward and that’s how they went into production (and where the engine stayed ever since, in the 911).

There were several versions of the 356. There was the “A”, the ”B” and the “C”. There was a Speedster, a Cabriolet and a Coupe. There was even a Carrera (in honor of the Carrera Panamericana).

Then the 356 was no more. It gave way to what has been one of the longest production of a single model by any automaker ever, the 911 (Nine-Eleven, or in German, Neunelf). The first 911, which came in 1964, wasn’t one; It was a 901. Porsche was forced to quickly change it’s designation due to a trademark infringement with Peugeot, so it became a 911. It’s

powerplant grew from 4 cylinders in the very beginning to 6 cylinders eventually.

In between those years the 911SC (Super Carrera), the 911CS (Club Sport), the The second 911 (1969) was a 912 but had a 3.2 Carrera, the Supersport (last of the smaller less powerful 4 cylinder engine. original 911s), a Cabriolet and a Speedster Then Porsche started offering different had made their debut. versions on it’s flagship vehicle. In 1989 the 911 was still a 911 but First the “S”, then, in ’73 and ’74 there was underwent drastic changes and became the RS (Rennsport) and even an the 964. “RSR IROC”. The next year a 964 Turbo came to

In ’74 there was the Carrera RS and the racing version, the Carrera RSR. There was even a Carrera RSR Turbo.

Between 1967 and 1977 Porsche made the 911A, B, C, D, E, F and G Series cars. In 1976, the second 911, the 912 was resurrected and was offered as the the 912E. One year later Porsche replaced it with the 924 which wasn’t a 911 anymore. But back to the 911s. Between 1975 and 1989 there was the 930, which was the 911 with a turbo. It was also known as “The Turbo”.

market. The RS was offered again and also an RSA (RS America). In 1994 the 964 became the 993

although it was still a 911. These were to be the last of the air-cooled 911s.

The 993 was available as an S, an RS, a C2S, a C4S Turbo and a Turbo S. In 1997 a smaller water-cooled flat-6 engine was produced and was put into a 2-seater, mid-engined, entry-level Porsche, the Boxster. But that’s another story altogether.

Back to the 911. Then in 1999 the 911 got water-cooled and became the 996 (with a larger version of the Boxster engine). It was offered as a Carrera 4 (AWD) and as a Carrera 4S (which looked like a turbo, but wasn’t). The 996 GT3 appeared for track junkies as well as a Turbo (AWD) and a GT2 (RWD Turbo).

In 2005 the 911 was now the 997.. This one was offered as a Carrera, Carrera S, Carrera 4, Carrera 4S, Turbo, Turbo S, GT3, GT3 RS, GT2 and GT2 RS In 2012 the 911 again changed and became the 991. The 991 was offered as a Carrera and Carrera S, Carrera GTS, Targa 4 and 4S, GT3, GT3 RS, Turbo and Turbo S as well as the exclusive (unobtanium) 991 R.

In between many of the aforementioned 911 production years, other models were developed. Some were produced and sold quite well. Others were very limited and were produced as street cars just so that Porsche could homologate the model to go racing. We can mention, in sequential, not chronological order: 914, 917, 918, 919, 924, 928, 929, 930, 934, 935, 944, 951, 956, 959, 962, 968, 980, 986, 987, 981, 989 …… These are just some of the other 9XX models that were produced and it is not a complete list. Now, if you knew all those model numbers and their singularities, you are a certified Porsche Numerologist! The Adventures of Miss Madison Gold Coast Region’s Youngest Member by Mike Robin

My Background: I was super lucky to be born two days before the 2016 edition of the LeMans 24 hour race and of course, my Dad was fully prepared for my arrival and the subsequent sleep deprivation that would ensue (He’s a veteran 24h race watcher so I’m told) . He had a cool setup with his iPad to stream the race on the recovery room TV while we all got comfortable handling each other over the course of the first 4 days of me being on the “outside”. My Grandparents obviously knew that Porsche’s were in my future and gifted me my first one (it’s a toy!) the same day that I was born. Dad says that my new car and I were Porsche’s good luck charm and helped us win LeMans on Sunday a few days later; he’s probably right! Since then, we’ve had a lot of fun in Daddy’s cars and my favorite things to do are to hang out with him in the garage while he preps the 911 for the Driver’s Education Events and to spend time with him at Porsche’s and Pancakes on the first Saturday of every month. We’ve been going since I was about two months old and I love trying to help him eat his breakfast, checking out the cool Porsche cars in the parking lot, and all the people who think I’m so cute. Sometimes when we go Daddy let’s Mommy sleep in and other times she comes too, she loves the super tasty corned beef hash and sometimes I get to try a small piece too! Next Month we’ll get more into the details about all the fun PCA events that I get to enjoy while watching the scenery fly past the back window of the 911!
