Tuners GCR Swap Shop by Beena Kohly, Social Chair This is an event where members come out and bring whatever they are interested in letting go of. It could be tires, Porsche parts, memorabilia, posters, steering wheels, mats etc. Everything Porsche related, nothing is off limits. There were even a few cars available for purchase. This year was bigger and better than last year. There were numerous vendors and the variety of the merchandise was vast. There were approximately 165 people who passed in throughout the day and that is only who stopped by the registration table to check in. There were more people who just walked by. Miguel Potolitto, the owner of Tuner’s Motorsports and his family were as always very hospitable and a pleasure to work with. He provided food, drinks, and snacks and kept everyone fed and happy. He also organized a DJ for the day. He always goes all out for the members of GCR. We thank him for his continued support of this event and all the others he is involved with. People enjoy coming out to this event because it’s the only one of its kind with GCR. I also know that this event will continue to draw large crowds and be bigger and better for years to come. Thanks to all the members who brought items to sell and all the participants who came out to support and browse. Until next time, Beena

ourselves because we thought it was so easy. Well, it’s not, in fact there is more to that than just looking up the answers. There are landmarks, mailboxes, and street names you have to look for with hints. If you are ready for a fun challenge, try doing the gimmick rally. I can’t wait for Beena and I to give it a go again this year. Speaking of PCA mini-parade, Are you going to this years 61st Annual Porsche Parade in Jay Peak, Vermont from June 19th – 26th? Event registration is now open on https://www.pca.org/porscheparade/registration . Both Beena and I plan on attending the Parade this year. The last PCA Parade we went to was in Savannah, GA in 2011! Every year they move the Parade to a new location, last year it was in French Lick, Indiana and the year before was in Monterey, CA. I hope to see all of you up there this year. Hope I get a chance to meet you at one of our events or even at one of our (5) Porsches’ and Pancakes locations throughout our region. Until next month.

those “love bugs”, and hospitality. Beena and I try to make it every year. It gives us a chance to reconnect with our old friends from other regions and always-meet new friends. I am sure you have experienced this already in our region; we are all like one big family. One of my favorite events is doing the fun gimmick rally drives, it’s where my wife and I drive together through the open roads of Sebring and Lake Placid trying to answer questions on the sheet looking out for landmarks and trying to find our way back to the finish line. Don’t think you can simply pull under a tree and Google every answer. A few years back I partnered up with Dan Doyle (current VP) and I pulled out my iPad as we parked under the shade, thinking why drive all over town when I can just answer the questions and we can drive back to the finish line and win this rally. Both Dan and I were high-fiving each other all the way back to the finish-line confident we had won this gimmick rally, we couldn’t wait to win that trophy! Well, that isn’t what happened. I think we had probably 2-3 answers correct. To this day, both Dan and I talk about it and we laugh about

Have you visited the new Porsche of West Broward dealership (Penske) yet? If not, you should drop by. They had their soft opening on April 4th and plan a grand opening later in the year. I was able to tour their amazing dealership and it is by far one of the nicest ones I have been too. They invited PCA Board members to host our April board meeting there and provided everyone with a tour. Be sure to check out the new showroom of cars and the amazing shop, which can be seen from the 2nd floor. Their entire staff was very knowledgeable and friendly. Tell them you are a PCA Gold Coast Member and they will show you around their showroom. Upcoming later this month is our Zonefest. This is where all of the Florida regions get together; sort of like a mini PCA parade. If you have never been to an event like this, sign up for Zonefest now. The event is being held in Sebring during the Memorial weekend. It’s where Porsche Club members and family get together to participate in fun events, meet other Porsche lovers, and see the beautiful array of various models from the 356s to the 991s. The fun begins on Friday evening with check-in, car detailing, removing

L
ast month we provided you with a track side tour of the 2016 Daytona Rolex 24 hour race by our resident photojournalist, Alberto Pugliese. This month the coverage continues with the 12 Hours of Sebring race. You can see by our cover photo that the weather was a bit different this year but the fan turn out was consistent at this historical track event. When the rain caused the race to be delayed for a few hours, the Porscheplatz, supported by PCA volunteers became very popular. The tent not only provided shelter but many guest speakers, door prizes, and refreshments. This year I took my grandson David and his girlfriend Phoebe who attended the event for the first time. Phoebe quickly pitched in and started serving coffee and doughnuts while David helped

the early arrivals stage their cars in the corral. Steve and Dottie kept the Porscheplatz operating with many PCA volunteers who greeted members and helped to run the tent along with PCNA personnel. Check out the new members ad on the proceeding page. Palm Beach Driving Club is offering new members a complimentary track orientation, driving, dinner and social introduction. New members can e-mail our GCR membership address to receive your Welcome Package. Please review the Zonefest flyer for the latest updates. If you have not booked your room or signed up, call the hotel today and register on www.clubregistration. org. Gold Coast Region is the host this year so show your support and come meet members from the other Florida regions. I
would like to welcome Porsche West Broward to our back two page inside cover. We are very lucky to have so many high quality advertisers in the Kassette. Please thank them for their support. On May 7th we will be holding our first tour of the Elliot Museum. You should have received an E-mail blast with the details. If you need more information contact Jerry Daily at Poorish933@yahoo.com. If you have never attended a Drivers Education event and always wanted to try one, now is your chance. Our DE chair Stuart has created an event for 1st time DE students. The event will be held on July 16th at PBIR. This will be a great opportunity to give DE a try. It is a great experience and we want your first event to be special.

12 Hours of Sebring Article and photos by Alberto Pugliese
The day started with glorious sunshine but we all knew the weather forecast. Walking in the pits you could see the radar with treacherous weather coming straight to Sebring from the gulf. It started to rain around noon, on and off. It was not terrible, but standing water was accumulating rapidly making driving at race pace quite dangerous. As some thunderstorm activity developed, the course workers were ordered to take shelter and the race was red-flagged for about 3 hours. Good opportunity for me to visit PorschePlatz, which had a fantastic set up and big tent that kept PCA members dry. Meanwhile artist Austin Hatcher painted a scene of the Porsche Cars North America (PCNA) 911s racing in the rain, which was auctioned off to raise funds for a children’s charity. Six Porsches competed this year, two in the GT Le Mans and four in the GT Daytona classes, respectively.

Competition was fierce, and our 911s had to deal with Ferraris, Astons, Lamborghini, Audis, Fords, Corvettes, and a Viper! Luck was definitely not on our side. In the Le Mans class, the best placed Porsche was the PCNA entry #912 (Bamber, Makowiecki, Christensen), which finished 3rd. It was close racing until the end, however; after 12 hours of racing, the Porsche 911 RSR arrived about 2 and 4 seconds behind the Team Rahal-Letterman #25 BMW M6 (Auberlen, Spengler, Werner) and Corvette Racing #4 C7R (Gavin, Milner, Fassler), which finished 2nd and 1st, respectively. It was a hard fought competition! It must be noted too the PCNA #911 car (Pilet, Tandy, Estre) was taken out while battling for the class lead with the Corvette #3 (Magnussen, Garcia, Rockenfeller). The accident occurred with less than 5 hours to go, on the main straight. The Porsche and Corvette passed an Audi, to its left and right, respectively; then Corvette moved left to take the line for turn 1, but was unaware of the 911 and the two cars collided and ended up in the tire wall! This was possibly the most spectacular of many crashes and off track excursions, most of which were caused by the slippery conditions. The GT Daytona class was won by the #63 Ferrari Corse 488 GT3 (Nielsen, Balzan, Segal), followed by the Turner Motorsport #96 BMW M6 GT3 (Curtis, Klingmann, Freiberg), and the Magnus Racing #44 Audi R8 LMS GT3 (Potter, Lally, Seefried). The best Porsche could do was 4th and 5th, with Team Seattle/Alex Job Racing # 22 (James, Farnbacher, Riberas) and #23 (MacNeil, Keen, Jeannette) 911 GT3Rs.

Overall victory and the Prototype class win went again to the Tequila Patron Extreme Speed Motorsports #2 Ligier JS P2 driven by Scott Sharp, Luis Felipe Derani, Ed Brown, and Johannes van Overbeek. Derani executed some masterful passes in the closing laps and took the car to the checkered flag. Despite the rain, the 64th running of the 12 Hours of Sebring was as competitive and exciting as ever. Imagine what it could be if we could have the Porsche and Audi prototypes back‌‌. They belong to Daytona and Sebring, not just Le Mans.

Tech Corner : A Long Time Ago... Article by Pedro P. Bonilla, Tech Editor
... in a factory far, far away ... ... there was a sports car manufacturer that would only put flat-6 engines in their hand-built cars; and those cars dominated everywhere, especially on the tracks. This phenomenon became known as the Porsche Menace. Eventually other manufacturers tried their hand at competing with them and set out to beat them, and sometimes they did. This era we now know as the Attack of the Clones. But Porsche pressed on and even with their smaller engines placed in the most unusual location (behind the rear axle) they kept winning and winning and winning. They won every type of race, including the big 3: the 12 Hours of Sebring the 24 Hours of Daytona and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. This was the Revenge of the Six. (BTW: Do you know why it’s only 12 hours at Sebring but 24 at Daytona and Le Mans? - It’s because there ain’t a racecar or a driver that can last 13 at Sebring!) And then the company struggled through the 80s and early 90s and almost went broke, but for... A New Hope. During this period the water-cooled engines were introduced and cars were now built by C3PO and R2D2 instead of manually as before. The Factory became more efficient and more factories were built. This was a happy time at Porsche since their cars became very popular and the company became very profitable. They were building larger and larger and more powerful flat-6 engines 2.5L, 2.7L, 2.9L, 3.2L, 3.4L, 3.6L, 3.8L and 4.0L, and then ... The Empire Strikes Back! ... … and environmental regulations became more and more stringent. The Republic and the Trade Federation required higher and higher efficiencies and Porsche complied by making their flat-6 engines produce almost no pollution and even made electric and hybrid cars, and that was fine for a while. Porsche even orchestrated the Return of the Jedi by bringing back the Porsche Family into management with Jedis such as Wendelin Wiedekin and Ferdinand Piëch, both grandsons of the Jedi Master himself, Ferdinand Porsche.

But those in the Death Star: Darth Vader and The Emperor specifically, mandated that they should double their miles-pergallon in the next 10 years! That basically started the demise of Porsche’s long-lived normally aspirated flat-6. Porsche decided that The Force was not strong so they announced that for the year 2017 all Boxsters and Caymans (with very unique exceptions) would now be equipped with flat-4 engines which were to be turbo charged to offer more Force. Eventually the announcement was also made to include the iconic 911 as well. With the exception of the super-performance models, such as the GT4, Spyder, GT3 and such they will all be powered by turbo charged flat-4s. The Force Awakens! After all this saga, the only thing I can say now is... ... may the fours be with you! For more information on “the fours” and more, please visit my website: Happy Porsche’ing,

First Timers DE Event I am so excited to announce a very special Gold Coast PCA “First Time Only” Driver’s Education (DE) Track Event. This is your chance to take your Porsche on a real race track with your own personal instructor to guide you through this beginner’s introduction to DE. If you have ever wanted to experience the thrill of driving your Porsche on the track, this is your opportunity. Safety is the highest priority – followed by having fun. This is NOT RACING. In DE we acquire the knowledge and develop the skills needed to drive at high speed, for the enjoyment of it. That’s the real goal - to have high speed fun - no trophies or prizes, just enjoyment. The day will start with meeting your instructor. Then you will both jump in your car and head out on the track for a few slow parade laps to get warmed up. Next you will join us for a 40- minute class covering safety, general fundamentals of high speed driving and the specifics of the track. After class you will take to the track with your instructor in your passenger seat. Two- way headset communication is provided by your instructor. We will split the drivers into two groups. Each group will alternate, having three 30- minute driving sessions for a total of 1 1/2 hours of track time. During the day, you will learn proper driving techniques, safe car control and high-speed driving which will transfer over to your everyday commute. The DE will be followed by a lunch onsite at PBIR in the big tent so you can share your experience with the other First Timers. DE is also a social event. You are welcome to bring family and friends. During the breaks you can stroll through the parking area (paddock) and meet your fellow Porsche enthusiasts. It makes for an enjoyable day filled with friends who have a common interest. You will remember this experience for the rest of your life! I have never seen a first time student leave without a smile. For more information or to ask questions before you decide, please feel free to call, text or email me. Come join us in the fun! REQUIREMENTS: 1. Register on www.ClubRegistration.net 2. SA 2010 or newer Helmet - You can buy your own helmet for around $200 or you may have a friend who has a helmet you can bor row. We may also have a few loaners - first come first served. 3. Tech Inspection - This is a simple inspection to make sure your car is safe for a day at the track. Print a copy of the Tech Inspection Form and bring it with you to the Tech Inspection shop. They will fill it out. The Tech Form can be found on the Gold Coast web site along with a list of authorized Tech Inspection shops. The Tech Inspection is usually free of charge as the intention is to keep everyone safe. Stuart Jarkowski, DE Chair, 561-558-5654, Stuartjar@gmail.com
