President’s Corner Steve Kidd - President

March proved to be another very busy month for Gold Coast Region (GCR) with both National and local events. On the National scene, the Werks Reunion at Amelia Island was as spectacular as ever and the following weekend....March 15-17 was the 12 hours of Sebring and WEC race where the Porsche RSR’s did very well. The Porsche Platz at Sebring is always fun to visit, a great place to park your Porsche in the Corral and mingle with other PCA members. On the local front, our Porsches and Pancakes socials on the 1st Saturday of the month and our Thursday social Happy hours on the 3rd Thursday of the month continue to be very popular. For those that don’t know, we now have 9 Porsche and Pancakes locations with our 2 most recent additions being Berries in the Grove (thanks Brenda) and Rob’s Bageland in Coral Springs (thanks Rob and Leslie). GCR recently added another 3rd Thursday Social ...Brios Tuscan Grille in Boca Raton (Thanks John and Judy). At the end of the month GCR had a social at Gulfstream where everyone got to “Horse”around and pony up to the races....A big thanks to Cynthia for coordinating this new activity. Another March activity was the annual Zone 12 Presidents meeting held in Orlando this year. As a Region President I represented GCR and brought back lots of ideas and a few areas that we’ll need to work on. Overall Gold Coast is the largest region in Zone 12 and considered a leader and innovator in many areas. Some of

the areas discussed at the meeting ….and challenges include, but are not limited to Proper use of social media as it relates to PCA Value of and proper use of insurance certificates and waivers when required The value of establishing and maintaining great club / dealer relations Avoidance of the reality or perception of conflict of interest Identifying strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (swot) Member recruitment and retention The new breed of Porsche vehicles and how they fit into PCA and dealers...think electric Holiday Charity coordinated drives...All participating regions drive to a Children’s hospital on 12/14 Past & upcoming events ...especially Porsche Parade coming to Boca Raton in July As the Porsche Parade draws closer, Gold Coast Region continues to assist where needed. As the host region for parade we will serve as ambassadors to PCA members from all over the country and I’m sure our GCR members will be as helpful and friendly as possible. While no official Parade registration numbers have been released as of this writing, it is my understanding that over 25% of the attendees will be from Zone 12, and a high percent will be from Gold Coast Region. We are planning pre-parade activities such as a Gimmick Rally to prepare parade attendees for the Parade gimmick rally and an Autocross at the property where the Parade AX will be held. While the April 21 AX will be at the

May 2019

|

PBIR kart track, it’s only steps from the actual site (the track) where the Parade AX will be on July 24-25. Also planned are a region parade get together to help new parade attendees better understand parade activities, expectations, volunteering and opportunities to win really cool stuff....I think 12 sets of tires, among lots of other great prizes, were given away at parade in 2018. The last time a Porsche Parade was held in Florida was in 2003 when the Tampa area (Saddle Brook Resort) hosted this great week long celebration of everything Porsche. The last time the Parade was in our region was 1968 when GCR was only 5 years old. Porsche Parade is something not to be missed....especially when it’s in our back yard. Until next month.....Steve

orsche arade is getting close, I hope you have completed your registration and selected the events you plan to attend. During our monthly Porsches and Pancakes breakfast, Parade was discussed and the new members were not planning on attending because they did not understand the registration process and did not invest money on event that they had never been to. At that point the red flags starting going off. Parade is something like Spring Break to a college student. I went over some of the details and explained how lucky we were to have Parade in our region and that it would not be this close for many years. It also told me that as a club we had not done our job as leadership to educate new members about the enjoyment of attending

a Porsche Parade. Registration is open at PCA.org. By the way, the there this year is Spring Break. Don’t miss this great event. 2003 was the last Parade in Florida. The event has co-hosted in Tampa by Gold Coast and Suncoast regions. It was a lot of work and a lot of fun. To prepare for this national event we held our Zonefest at the same site the year before so that we could be ready. It worked and the Parade was a great event. We did not select that option this year so I hope you are attending Zonefest in Mt. Dora later this month to practice your skills before Parade. Last month we held a Gimmick Rally to teach the members how to sharpen their rally skills. Check out the article on pages 16 and 17. From the member feedback

you can see how much fun they had. Look for more rallies to be added to our driving tours. To help you improve your concours skills we are holding Autofest in Plantation. Bring your Porsche and let it shine. SUPER SEBRING is an article written and photographed by our staff photojournalist Alberto Pugliese. Enjoy this very special Porsche victory story. We have two upcoming event flyers that were created by our graphics artist Kirk Giannola. We are lucky to have both of these creative professionals. The Gunner Tour will fill up quickly so register soon. The Sanibel Run is also very popular so sign up quickly. Enjoy your Porsche, Roger

Racing fans were treated to a double header event in 2019, as Sebring international Raceway hosted the 1000 Miles of Sebring for the WEC (World Endurance Championship), in addition to the traditonal IMSA 12 Hours race. Fans could finally watch action from the same cars and drivers that compete at Le Mans. The WEC race was won by the Toyota driven by Formula 1 star Fernando Alonso, together with Buemi and Nakajima. Overall victory in the 12 Hours race went to the Cadillac DPI driven by Nasar, Curran and Derani. Although not competing in the prototype classes, Porsche took victory in three GT classes. The #911 RSR fielded by the IMSA Porsche GT Team won the GTLM class in the 12 Hours race, driven by Tandy, Pilet and Makowiecki. The WEC Porsche GT Team #92 RSR won the LMGTE Pro class in the 1000 Miles race, driven by Christensen and Estre. Porsche also won the LMGTE Am class with the #77 Dempsey-Proton Racing RSR driven by Ried, Campbell, and Andlauer. The three class winning Porsches were shown on the cover. Gimmick Rally GCR prepares for Parade with Gimmick Rally / Mural Tour by Steve Kidd, GCR President April 12 should be remembered as the landmark day that re-introduced rallying to Gold Coast Region (GCR). It was Dotties idea to bring back rallying as it had been about 8-10 years since GCR had planned and hosted a regional gimmick rally. With Porsche parade coming to our Region in July , what a good time to acquaint new comers to what a Parade Gimmick Rally might be like. To help keep it simple and make it fun, the event was divided into 2 parts with a Parade style Gimmick Rally starting in West Palm Beach and continuing along the Beach , thru natural areas as well as neighborhoods of ocean front mansions....and ending in Hobe Sound Park in Martin County. After a lunch at Tastes Restaurant and socializing break, rally participants could choose to participant in the 2nd part of the rally (which was actually a tour of the murals in the Hobe Sound area), or chill out and see Hobe sound on their own and later meet up for happy hour, or simply call it a day and return home. The day ended with a happy hour / socializing and awards presentation at Harry and the Natives. When all the dust settled after both portions of the event were complete, the winners of Part A Gimmick rally were Tad and Dorothy Todd. This couple is relatively new to PCA and this was their 1st GCR event. They were thrilled to not only win, but make a lot of new friends and want to try more events....and maybe even an autoX. The winning team for Part B, the mural tour, were long time members Paul and Peggy Raben, who after a difficult time at last years parade gimmick rally, stormed back and aced the mural tour. In the hunt for top prize in both components of the activity were Bill and Mary Caldwell who drove over from Clearwater / Suncoast region to participate.

Huge thanks to the group of volunteers that assisted in making this event fun... including but not limited to Kyle, who served as the starter even though he did not participate, Russ who was one of the first on scene and helped park the Porsches and give initial instruction, Lorena who packed the commemorative coolers with water and snacks and saw that each rally team and got one when they picked up their rally instructions from Dottie, as well as every one else who offered to assist where needed. The biggest hug goes to Dottie who had the vision to do this event, made 4 trips through the rally /tour route

Enjoying ice creem at Sweeties to make sure everything was correct, and make it easy enough for first timers , but challenging enough for more experienced members. This is in addition to registration, phone calls from interested parties, paperwork...more paperwork and hours... no days of preparation to make sure every detail is handled. Want more... Maybe a 2nd rally/tour in the South part of our region before Parade.....Stay tuned for more and feel free to give us your thoughts. Gold Coast Social Scene Social Report by Dottie Kidd Our Social Team has been busy in finding/setting up social events for our members. Please thank them for their hard work when you see them at an event – Dale Brundige, Brenda Gramajo, Cynthia Fluhart and Dottie. Gold Coast Region started off January 2019 with a breakfast drive to Islamorada, February with the 48 Hours of Sebring Club Race and a Carlin Park Picnic in Jupiter, March an event at Gulfstream Racetrack. There are three events scheduled for the month of April: Gimmick Rally/Mural Tour to Hobe Sound (in preparation for the Porsche Parade coming to Boca this summer), Autofest in Plantation (giving you a chance to detail your Porsche and see if the Judges can find any hidden dirt), and Schnebly Winery & BBQ in Miami for a relaxing event on a Saturday afternoon. Since the Gold Coast Region extends from Key West all the way north to Fort Pierce (about 300 miles apart) and west to Okeechobee and Sebring (another 100 miles) it’s important to plan social events in various locations. Other events are being planned but not finalized such as the Gunnar Racing Shop, Car Museums in Melbourne, Stuart and Punta Gorda, and drives west to Sanibel Island and as far north as North Carolina in the fall. If you have any suggestions that would appeal to our members please let the Social Team know. You can reach me at goldcoastregion.org as “Autocross Registrar” 22

Autocross Update

AutoX event #3 on April 21 is in our cross hairs as I write this article....and a great AX event it shall be. We have not done an AX event at PBIR Kart track in probably 10 years. I walked the course back in February and not much has changed...still tight in some places....fast in others. Speaking of sites, looks like we’ll be back at FAU in the fall as well as a new site we visited in March. Before I give you the name of the new site, I will tell you it’s a dream come true for Space Coast Region. Imagine a member who owns a new car museum that has enough grippy new concrete around the perimeter to do a 60 second AX run...plenty of parking, fenced in.... with a moat (alligators are said to be one of his security features.) and just off I-95. Throw in the fact that in the Museum are 303 of the most spectacular cars you can imagine, with about 20 of those being Porsches. The owner is a huge Porsche fan and one of the nicest guys you will ever meet. We spent quite a bit of time with owner Mark Pieloch who has an interesting story about every car in his Museum and personally invited our region to do an AX at this facility. We gladly accepted and advise our members to look for an AX to be limited to about 45....but who knows...maybe a museum tour after the event. The name of this site is American Muscle Car Museum and it’s almost perfect. I say almost because it’s not in Broward County and requires a 2 hour drive north to Melbourne to get there...More time if you live in South Dade. To me a small price to pay for a great event. There is a chance we may not get BBT back and drives to AX sites will be longer and/or courses will be smaller. I want to thank not only Mark, but also the Space Coast Region team for providing a great AX event on 3/30 and those interested in how Team Gold Coast did can check the Space Coast Region website. I can tell you a well driven Cayman is no match for a well driven GT3RS.....and Space Coast had no problem filling this AX event with 50 Porsches.....No non Porsches. Want to see how good you really are? Read below and plan to compete against the best of the best. GCR has a secret weapon this year and we are hoping to capture over all FTD at Parade, something GCR has not done for quite some time. We did grab Ladies FTD about 8 years ago thanks to Barbara Beecher. Parade AutoX July 24th and 25th at the PBIR Racetrack ...Yes the Porsche Parade is coming to Boca Raton and the Parade autox will be held on the track...yes, there will be cones and appropriate safeguards, but I envision a fast course that will not be hard to follow. This is where the best of the best competes, and you must register for the Parade and sign up for the Auto X on line, most likely on April 15th. Last year the Parade fee was around $200. per couple and the AutoX was $35.00 per person. The Modified, Improved and Production classes most likely will run on Wednesday and the Stock classes on Thursday, but that could change.

News, reminders and 2019 updates: • Everyone is now required to pre-register for any AutoX on Clubregistration.net… Please consult the GCR website and Kassette for all Autocross photos & results. • Porsche classes are loosely based on the PCR’s for medium size regions, with minor regional adjustments. The major difference will be the addition of SN (stock car/novice driver) for men and ladies. These classes are strictly for newcomers only. Please see Steve for any car class questions or if you wish to run as a novice. We reserve the right to make additional class/rule changes as needed. • Our 2019 series is planned to be 3-7 events. To be eligible for an end of the year award, competitors must run in over half the events in the same class. Each competitor’s top finishes will be calculated and an end of the year class champion and possibly runner-up (depending on class size) will be chosen. In case of a tie, additional events will be added until the tie is broken. Year-end class champion awards may be presented. • No passengers except for an approved AX instructor driving or in the car instructing. • Questions…..call Steve or Dottie Kidd 954-946-3196 • For 2019 our advice is please register early. As a reward, early registrants will get the best price. However, those registering the last week before the event will see an increase in event registration price. While we typically do not allow on-site registration, if we do, your registration fee will increase to a minimum of $55.The best advice is to register early, as some events do have caps and we charge a premium fee if you register 1 week or less from the event date.

Porsches and Pancakes

Two New Locations Rob’s Bagleland - Coral Springs Porsche and Pancakes socials continue to be some of the most popular GCR events. Over the last several months 2 new sites were added....each with their distinct flavor (no pun intended). If you have never been to a P&P, plan on attending one on the 1st Saturday of each month. No pre-registration or other commitment. The fun starts 1015 minutes before each event when the parking lot becomes ablaze of Porsches and Porsche conversation. The crowd moves inside where everyone orders off the menu and is responsible for their own bill. In many cases the conversations spill back out to the parking lot for more show and tell. Thanks again to Brenda for organizing the Berries in the Grove location and John / Leslie for organizing the Rob’s Bageland sites. See you at a location near you Steve Kidd President, Gold Coast region Berries in the Grove - Miami

Tech Corner :

Death & Taxes Article by Pedro P. Bonilla, Tech Editor

When something is inevitable we tend to say: “just like death and taxes”. Well, car repairs then are “just like death and taxes”.

Owning and driving a car, even a Porsche, involves spending money on maintenance and repairs. Keeping up with regularly scheduled oil changes and recommended service intervals as well as keeping an eye on your fluids and warning lights, will save you a lot of money and aggravation down the road.

But even if you keep up with the recommended service and maintenance schedules, with time and mileage, some parts will wear and will require replacement. The only way to avoid car repairs is if you lease or trade your car before things start to wear and or break. Following is a list of items that typically wear or fail due to mileage and age. Battery: After about 5 years of use (regardless of mileage) most lead-acid batteries start to weaken and need to be replaced. Keep in mind that if you drive your car very

little, the battery should be hooked up to an external (trickle) charger or it will die a lot quicker. Manufacturers and suppliers generally do not warranty a battery that hasn’t been driven at least 7,000 miles/ year.

leave you stranded with a giant cloud of water vapor trailing behind you. If this happens don’t try to make it home without coolant, even if it’s just a couple of miles. Without coolant the engine will overheat very quickly and may cause additional expensive damage.

Batteries also do not like very hot environments. Luckily Florida doesn’t have the weather extremes as some other parts of the country and Porsche installs the battery away from the hot engine bay, which also helps its longevity a bit. A replacement battery for a Porsche is $150 – $300 depending on you car’s model.

Replacing a water pump and coolant with recommended parts, materials and labor should cost less than $1,000.

Water Pump: After 1997, Porsche started using watercooled engines, which require a water pump to circulate coolant between the engine and the radiators to keep the engine from overheating. By the time a water pump in a Porsche reaches 75,000 miles, the incidence of failure due to coolant leak goes up sharply. If the pump has over 100,000 miles on it, you are driving on borrowed time. It starts as a small coolant leak from the pump’s shaft that generally cannot be detected by the owner because coolant will only escape as water vapor while the car is running and will leave no drips on the garage floor. The warning light will eventually advise the driver that the coolant level is low and the owner will generally add coolant mix or distilled water and keep on driving. If you have to add coolant to your car, you need to find out why or how its being lost because sooner than later the water pump will have a complete failure and will

Tiptronic Transmission: If it breaks, you’re better off replacing the whole transmission than trying to get it rebuilt. But, just like the rest of the car, the Porsche automatic transmission (Tiptronic) has a recommended service schedule. Once it reaches 90,000 it needs to be serviced. The service calls for completely draining the tranny fluid (ATF), opening the pan, cleaning, replacing the filter, installing a new gasket, replacing the pan and refilling with fresh fluid. Full synthetic is a welcomed upgrade for the new tranny fluid.

Manual Transmission (including PDK): The manual tranny also has a service interval at 90,000. This one uses heavier oil than the Tiptronic and the PDK uses two fluids (tranny oil and clutch fluid).

Clutch: Transmissions are very hefty and may last through the life of the car but the clutch will probably have to be replaced at some time. The life of the clutch depends almost exclusively on the driver. Even with heavy track use (excluding drag racing) the clutch may still last the life of the car. A new clutch costs around $700, but replacing it requires removal of the transmission which adds around 10 hours of labor. The cost of brakes is around $250 per each disc, and $250 for a set of pads for 2 rotors, plus about 1.5 hours of labor per corner.

Brakes: Brake components such as the pads and the rotors are wear items that require replacement when worn. As the pads press against the face of the brake disc or rotor, both parts wear down. Generally the pads wear first and may be replaced without the need to replace the rotor if the rotor is within its limits. When the pads wear down you will get a warning light on the dash, but to know how much life your rotors still have, run your finger around the outer edge of the disc (when cold) and you will feel a lip. When the lip gets to be 1 mm the rotor needs replacement. Generally rotors last two sets of pads.

Tires: Again, another wear item that needs to be regularly inspected and replaced when worn. Correct inflation will help the life and performance of the tire. Make sure that your Porsche is well aligned, since a wrong alignment will accelerate an uneven wear of the tires. Our cars come with high performance summer tires with a somewhat short life but high grip. Summer tires, depending on your driving, may last around 30,000 miles for the fronts and 15,000 for the rears. Depending on tire size, brand and performance level, high performance summer tires may cost between $100 and $400 each. When replaced, they must be balanced individually (best is road-force balancing) and in most cases the TPMS sensors should be replaced as well.

Plastic Parts: Heat, age and weather conditions are not friends of plastic. After 12 to 15 years, many plastic parts such as hoses, lines, seals, expansion tanks and a myriad other plastic parts need to be carefully inspected and replaced if they show signs of deterioration. Porsche coolant hoses and fuel lines tend to last quite well but many hard plastic parts, especially within the engine bay can’t say the same. Replacing these deteriorated parts before they fail will certainly save you money and aggravation. For more information on Porsche parts and more, please visit my website: www PedrosGarage.com.
