Hello, everyone!! Although not an April event, Mike Roblin, DE Chairman put on an excellent Driver Education (DE) event at Homestead Miami Speedway at the end of March. There was a turn out of over 90 cars on a weekend where we probably saw the last of our winter weather. Your cars are meant to be driven! Please come out and join us at least once at the track to see just what your car can do! In April we held an Autocross event at Sebring International Raceway. What a blast! Everyone had a good time and really learned how to handle their cars.
Please consider attending an Autocross event in the future if you haven’t already. As I’ve said before, there is probably no better way to learn car control. Thanks to Steve, Autocross Chairman and Dottie Kidd for putting on such a great event! Coming up this month, May we have a DE at Sebring with our friends at PBOC on May 5-6 and an Autocross event on May 13 at the BB&T Center in Sunrise, Florida. We may also have a Stone Crab Drive to the west coast of Florida on May 5. Please check your emails and our website for further information on the drive.

Can we say that spring is here? In Florida we have great weather year round to enjoy our Porsche’s. That may be one of the reasons so many people move here and that we are one of the highest growth rate regions in PCA. Florida does offer a better climate and the bonus of enjoying your Porsche 365 days a year. As we kicked off our picnic in Jupiter this February, it seemed like a summer day. On top of wonderful weather and a great turnout we were across A1A near the ocean. If you have been a member of Gold Coast for at least a season or more of events you know that our socials especially our club picnics are at the top of the

popularity chart. This event added another layer to our standard picnic, the event was held to support a local charity. Dale Brundige our Charity Chair and his wife Lorena were asked to plan the event. They did an outstanding job and assembled a northern social team that rocked. Please read their article that explains more of the details of the event along with a large photo gallery to help capture the moment. Thank you to all of the board members and volunteers that helped with the event. After a great report of the event to the board, it was decided that more events would be held in the northern part of our region. A special thank you to a new Kas-

sette advertiser, Ted Jacobs owner of Pixel Movr. Ted created a special award for the winner of the Peoples Choice Concours Award. His artwork is on the cover of the Kassette. Ted also donated the funds of his work to the charity along with his beautiful artwork to Tom Blash. Gold Coast has helped other charities and I am glad to see that we are giving back to our community thru these type of events. Check your GCR calendar and e-mail for upcoming events. Carlin Park Charity Picnic in Jupiter ... A Long Time in the Making PCA’s Gold Coast Region (GCR) is a large and active chapter. We host an ever increasing number of events throughout the year, and are fortunate to have some of best and hardest working volunteers within the club. Our membership has increased to record levels over the past few years. This is due (in part) to the diversity of our club’s events and to the volunteer spirit of its members. However, with our ever increasing new memberships, we recognize our need to offer even more. It’s with this understanding, that a new idea was hatched to present a new type of event at a new location; an idea with the main focus on supporting a worthwhile charity. Selecting the charity was not easy, as there were hundreds of worthwhile causes. However, we chose an organization that did not already have a large group of donors and invested almost every collected dollar back into programs for needy families, rather than on “administrative costs”. The club formed a relationship with the Connections Education Center of the Palm Beaches (a school dedicated to helping autistic children and their families) and event planning commenced. The next piece of the puzzle was to find an event location in an area of the region that does not get quite the exposure of other areas. Since Palm Beach and areas northwards are the fastest growing in GCR and activities in Northeast Palm Beach were overdue, Carlin Park was selected as the venue due to its location on the beach. Yes, on the beach! This turned out to be the ideal location. It was in a less populated area, and with the right amenities. Did

we mention it was on the beach? There was plenty of parking for all our Porsches on the lawn, nice shelters, with peaceful and quiet surroundings (especially since this a public beach). The cool ocean breeze added to the location’s charm. An organizational team was formed and members volunteered to help. Dale and Lorena coordinated with the charity, the park selection and the caterer. Yes, rather than GCR’s traditional pot luck style picnic, the decision was made to try something new and cater a barbeque lunch. Peter took charge of the People’s Choice car show and Steve and Dottie handled the other loose ends such as pre-event registration, trophies and door prize coordination. As things turned out, the event exceeded expectations and a large number of additional members volunteered to assist with various tasks such as on site check-in, parking, ticket sales, handing out door prizes and numerous other details. The event could not have been the success it was without them. Our club is fortunate to have them as our fellow members! Door prizes? Yes, this year GCR was blessed with a good supply of merchandise from the 48 hours at Sebring club race. All paid registrants were treated to club shirts and other goodies from our most recent Club Race. While we can’t promise that distribution of cool Porsche swag will happen at every charity event, we can tell you another similar event is in the planning stages and to register early. As for our partnership with Connections Education Center of the Palm Beaches, several unique things happened that

By Steve and Dottie Kidd made this event really cool. First of all, the school’s senior staff were present to handle the ticket sales for the 50/50 raffle, coordination of the silent auction baskets (a really nice assortment of gifts, goods and services donated by members and our local advertisers and shops). They even had a credit card machine to accept payment for these items, and for direct contributions in exchange for lunch tickets of members who did not pre-register or bring cash. With charity events, regions can apply for a subsidy from PCA national to the tune of $450, which was done and received. Additionally the GCR board of directors voted to match PCA Nationals subsidy. With all money collected from all sources a check for over $3000 will be cut and bestowed to the charity. A planned BIG check presentation is in the works so watch for follow up in a future Kassette. While the charity component went well, another aspect of this event was the fun, great food, camaraderie, Porsche socializing and showing off our beautiful cars. While all the cars presented well a few of the top vote-getters in the People’s Choice show were: First Place went to Tom Blash and his beautiful 1961 Bali Blue 356. Second and Third place respectively went to Bill and Linda Drucker with their beautiful blue Boxster and Rueben Fuentes with his RS America. Look forward to more events of this nature in the future. Again, a huge thanks to all our volunteers, supporters, donors and members......PCA truly is fueled by volunteers.

The 66th running of the 12 Hours of Sebring was my second time at this crazy carnival of an endurance event and It. Is. Awesome. If you’ve never been you really have to go, but before I go on too much further a little background is in order. I’ve been an endurance racing fan for almost two decades now and when I was in College at UF and the first 5ish years afterwards attended the Rolex 24 at Daytona almost every year. My friends and I would usually camp out in tents or (in the later years) get a hotel room just outside the track but we always wondered what it would be like to have an RV and park inside the track to watch the race along the fence. Fast forward to this year and I finally convinced one of my best friends to bring his RV (a converted Gators themed school bus) down to the 12 Hours of Sebring. This is not your average school bus that has been converted to an RV, it is a perfect
Sebring party bus to watch the race from with a rooftop viewing platform, bar, couches, satellite TV, air conditioning, and even a bathroom! We managed to get an incredible trackside parking pass in Turn 4 that had a great view of the race coming at us out of Turn 1 and through Turns 2-3 with lots of passing to watch. Getting fully set up Friday, we had time to watch many of the support series races while taking in the atmosphere of the event and walking through Green Park was also full of interesting sights especially later in the evening. Saturday morning our alarm clock was the sound of race cars going by on morning warm up and the smell of race gas being burned, what a great way to wake up! After some breakfast and coffee, the race was ready to begin and at 10:40am the race was on. Throughout the next 8-10 hours we wandered around the track stop-

ping to watch the race from various different locations (when we weren’t at the bus) and meeting up with several friends along the way. The last two hours we spent sitting atop the rooftop deck watching the cars close in on the finish of the race with great anticipation to see who would win. When the checkered flag finally fell, it turned out to be the Nissan taking the Prototype win, Porsche taking GTLM with the #911 RSR, and Lamborghini finishing atop the GTD field. An exciting close to the race as all the class winners had close competition right up to the end. Sunday came along a bit too soon, but we’ve all made plans to for this to be an annual pilgrimage and are already planning for next year when IMSA and WEC get together for the Super Season doubleheader. If you happen to go next year and see us there (you can’t miss the bus), stop by and say hi!

Tech Corner : Rip-offs Article by Pedro P. Bonilla, Tech Editor
Few things tick me off more than seeing people getting ripped off by false promises. This happens every single day and all around us. Every now and then I’ll get a call from someone who wants to find out more about a particular product for his Porsche, or better yet, wants to find out if a vendor’s claims are true, and the three most common are: High-flow air filters, Low-temp thermostats and high HP mufflers.
Let’s start with the first: High-Flow Air Filters. These are generally marketed as lifetime filters. They have a metallic screen mesh with woven in cotton fibers that are then impregnated with oil. They claim to improve automotive performance and increase HP because they flow more air. But here’s the other side of the story. If a filter passes more air than the OEM it means that it has larger holes. Larger holes also let more dirt through which is not good for the engine. Small droplets of the oil that impregnates the filter’s mesh and are supposed to catch the unwanted particles, get picked up by the incoming air and end up on the Mass Airflow Sensor’s surfaces, eventually damaging it or hampering its ability to “read” the correct amount of incoming air which is shared with the car’s computer in order to maintain the optimum mix of air/gas. Their claims of better filtration are not real. You can do a simple test. Clean the inside of your car’s air intake system, from the air filter housing to the throttle body. Install a new OEM foam/paper filter and drive normally for 30 days. Inspect the intake system and wipe clean with some white-colored paper towels. Keep the used towels for later comparison. Now, with the intake clean

again, install a new Hi-Flow, oiled air filter and again drive normally for 30 days. Go back and wipe clean your intake system with fresh white paper towels and compare with the previously used towels from the previous 30 days. I guarantee that you will clearly see the difference, in favor of the OEM foam/paper filter. As per the more horsepower claims, the ONLY way to make more horsepower in an internal combustion engine is by passing more air through it. But the filter is NOT what dictates the amount of air that reaches the engine. That’s the function of the throttle body. The TB is the limiting or restricting piece in the flow of air. Making that claim is akin to saying that if you drink from a larger container you can drink more water. The amount of water you can drink is restricted by your throat’s size. You can’t drink more than your throat will pass even if you drank from a 5 gallon bucket. So, why would anyone want to install an aftermarket filter that passes more dirt to the engine, fouls the MAF and doesn’t allow more air into the pistons? Tandem to the Air Filters is usually a “cold air intake” kit. First of all, all modern Porsches already have a cold air intake, meaning that the air that reaches the filter and then the engine comes from outside of the engine bay, hence “cold”. Many times these “cold air intakes” actually are the contrary as they allow hot air from the engine bay to get to the engine. The colder the air, the more dense it is and the more power it can make.
My second pet peeve is the Low Temp Thermostat. These claim that it will keep your Porsche’s engine running cooler and hence, better. It will do neither. The thermostat in your house can keep the house cooler when you dial down the temperature. This is so because it keeps the A/C compressor running longer and pumping in more cold air. But in your Porsche (or any water-cooled car for that matter)
the thermostat doesn’t work that way. Automotive thermostats are a simple valve that can only be open or closed, period. When you start your cold Porsche in the morning, the thermostat is closed. It stays closed so that the small amount of coolant in the engine is circulated within the engine and can warm up to operating temperature quickly. Once this coolant reaches the optimal temp, lets say 185 degrees F, the thermostat opens and allows the coolant to travel to the radiators and back to the engine and maintain it’s optimal temperature. If you are stuck in traffic and there’s no airflow through the radiators you’ll notice the engine’s temp will rise a bit, so the car turns on its radiator fans to force air through the radiators and keep the coolant’s temp where it should be. But installing a lower-temp thermostat, for instance, a 165 degree F, will not keep the engine cooler, in fact the only thing it will do is open before the engine reaches its operating temperature. After it gets to 165 degrees it stays open and has no more temperature-controlling ability. It’s up to the radiator fans and or your speed through the air to maintain the engines temp. So, why would anyone dish out their hard-earned money and install a generally more expensive thermostat that will just keep the car from warming up sooner? Some of the vendors that offer these low temp thermostats will tell you that the OEM 185 degree thermostat won’t fully open until it reaches 200 degrees and that’s why you need the cooler one. If your thermostat takes that long to open, replace it with another OEM piece. Your car will appreciate it.
The third (and not the least) of my aftermarket pet peeves is the aftermarket mufflers that claim better horsepower because the have better air flow. In the exhaust system, the only part that can effectively improve the car’s performance independently of the rest of the system is a set of equal length headers because they can reduce wasted energy from a standard exhaust manifold. But a muffler by itself (the silencers) can only modify the final sound you hear as the gasses flow out into the atmosphere. A super efficient muffler cannot improve your car’s airflow because, as we now know, that can only happen by installing a larger throttle body. What many aftermarket exhausts do for a Porsche is reduce its horsepower and introduce droning. There is a lot of acoustical work and engineering that goes into designing and manufacturing a sports car muffler and generally the OEM is the one that makes the best exhaust for a particular car. The original Porsche Sport Exhaust (PSE) is a superior product that I can highly endorse. It has valves that open or close depending on the engine’s performance and allow more gasses to bypass the muffler and thus free up backpressure. When the engine is not being taxed, the valves close and all is quiet. There are several aftermarket brands that offer excellent exhaust systems as well, but they are very expensive since they are usually made from exotic materials such as carbon fiber, titanium, etc.
When purchasing performance products for your Porsche do your homework and don’t get ripped off.

Autocross Update By all accounts, Auto X # 2 on March 3rd at BBT was a picture perfect event. While we did not get live timing up and working, we hope to have all the technical issues worked out by the April or May event, adding a new dimension to our already great program. While I can’t predict the future and speak about the April Auto X, I can can tell you that this is the one time we offer an AutoX clinic geared to 1st time novices....No pressure.... no competition just basic instruction for beginners to get answers to all those newbie questions and sage tips from some National Champions. If you missed the clinic, don’t worry...... we have instructors at all our AX events and want newcomers to feel welcome and get hooked on autocrossing. So to give you newcomers a general overview of typical AX events, here is a representative schedule and description of the AX site locations • Registration and payment must be made in advance on Club Registration. Yes, just like most events in most PCA regions, you must pre register and pre pay. Discounts are offered for early registrations....don’t wait until the last week before the event or you can expect to pay a bit more. • Mandatory check-in and tech from 7:30 to 8:30 ONLY. YOU MUST ARRIVE BEFORE 8:15 AND STAY UNTIL THE END OF THE EVENT. If you skip out on a work assignment (a sign of poor sportsmanship), you may be required to work a double shift next event or not be invited back. • A novice course walk (available to everyone) takes place around 9:00.This is a great way to get pointers from the course designer as well as review of all basic concepts and terminology. • A mandatory driver meeting is held around 9:25 and critical safety and run / work structure is reviewed. • First car out takes place sometime between 9:35-10:00. Everyone usually gets 8 runs....divided into 2 run sessions, 2 work sessions and 2 rest sessions. Event is usually done between 3:00-5:00 And now for a brief description of where we have our AutoX locations, but first please know that Autox sites are getting scarcer, more expensive and harder to find new ones. Here’s where we currently go: • BB&T Center...Also known as the Panther Arena in Sunrise. Located in Central West Broward. We use Lot A on the NE corner of the site. Nice asphalt surface and interesting elevation changes and a central location make this site popular • Sebring race track.....We use 2 venues here...The bigger site is the place where race teams park during a major race....the Concrete strip opposite the paddocks, between turn 16 & 17. This long narrow course has very grippy concrete and a big u-shaped course is optimal. The other location is the skid pad, used during our club race AutoX challenge. Quite challenging, especially on the skid pad....you’ve got to give this a try

Event 4 May 13 is a Sunday event at BB&T. This will be our 2nd of 4 events at BBT and our 1st of the year on a Sunday. This will be our Porsche Mothers day special....stay tuned for more. This will be the last of our winter / spring Autocrosses, with action picking back up in September, October and November. As always a big thanks to all our regular participants, instructors and team of volunteers that organize, set-up, tear down and do 100’s of behind the scene details that make these events possible. We are always looking for new faces to join the A-Team and help Dottie and I with the on site set-up, day of event management and after event pack up. News, reminders and 2018 updates: • Everyone is now required to pre register for any AutoX on Clubregistration.net… Please consult the GCR website and Kassette for all Autocross photos & results. • Porsche classes are loosely based on the PCR’s for medium size regions, with minor regional adjustments. The major difference will be the addition of SN (stock car/novice driver) for men and ladies. These classes are strictly for newcomers only. Please see Steve for any car class questions or if you wish to run as a novice. We reserve the right to make additional class/rule changes as needed. • Our 2018 series are planned to be 7 events. To be eligible for an end of the year award, competitors must run in at least 4 events in the same class. Each competitor’s top 4 finishes will be calculated and an end of the year class champion and possibly runner-up (depending on class size) will be chosen. In case of a tie, additional events will be added until the tie is broken. Year-end class champion awards will be presented. • No passengers except for an approved AX instructor driving or in the car instructing. • Questions…..call Steve or Dottie Kidd 954946-3196 • For 2018 our advise is please register early. As a reward, early registrants will see no increase in price, however those registering the last week before the event will see an increase in event registration price. While we typically do not allow on-site registration, if we do, your registration fee will increase to a minimum of $55.The best advise is to register early, as some evevents to have caps and we charge a premium fee if you register 1 week or less from the event date.
