President’s Corner Dan Doyle - President

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!! In October we had an AutoX at the BB&T and Oktoberfest at the Biergarten in Boca. We also had a DE on October 20-21 DE at Homestead Miami Speedway. Although this was not a GCR sponsored/ hosted event, it was an excellent opportunity to take your car on the track and learn how to drive it fast but safe. I hope you all enjoyed a return to driving even if the weather wasn’t yet that cool! In November we have a Stone Crab Drive on November 3. Please check

our website and clubregistration.net for details. On November 11 we have another AutoX at BB&T and its Ladies Day so come out and join us!!! Also, November 17 is Porsches By The Bay in Miami! The concentration of fantastic Porsches both new and old will be amazing. Don’t miss it!!! Of course, there is also Thanksgiving. My best to you and your family. I hope you have a wonderful time with your loved ones.

As usual, Porsches & Pancakes is on the first Saturday of the month. Please take the time to join other Porsche fans and talk about your favorite subjects: your car and Porsche! Also, we have our Thursday Socials on the third Thursday of every month where you can do the same thing! Please check your emails and the calendar on our website for updated times and locations. These socials are a great way to get to know new members and make them feel welcome! Drive safe! Dan

Editor’s Notes Happy Thanksgiving. How quickly this year has flown by. I hope you have enjoyed the social and driving events that our volunteers have worked hard to make your Porsche experience special. If you are new to the club I hope you attended the New Member Chili Cook Off picnic at Carlin Park. This was our second event at that location and the weather was perfect again. Steve Kidd held a training class for our Autocross program and Peter Olliviere provided training on how to prepare for concours competition. You will see more training to help the members improve their skills as we get ready

Roger Fabel- Editor

for Parade next summer that will be held in Boca Raton. As we host the event, many volunteer positions will be open to our members. Don’t miss this opportunity to work with PCA members from across the nation. This is not our first Chili Cook Off but I think this was the best selection of Chili that I have seen in my 18 years of membership. Look forward to more events in the north part of our region. Our social chair, Dale Brundige, from the north area has planned a wine tasting event this month. Check page 13 for more details on this limited seating event.

demo cars. One of the now ideas conveyed was September 29 aton Carlin Park in Palm Must RSVP www.clubregistration.net – open Beach, Florida. During the event planning process, one of the goals was to introduce established members to new members that joined in 2018 and combine this event with an extraordinary social flavor (chili) as well provide the group with introductory sessions on two of the region’s most popular activities.....concours and autocross. Everyone was given a warm welcome as they entered the picnic pavilion, and new members were presented with a GCR t-shirt and later recognized during announcements. The weather was warm but attendance was recorded at 119 members. Seven attendees made chili for the contest and the remainder of members brought a food or beverage item to share....Additionally the club provided hot dogs (thanks to chefs Paul Raben and Bob Varela) and all the yummy fixings brought by the members to go with all that great chili. After registration, the first activity was a concours prep session using

how to prepare a car to compete at the highest levels, such as Porsche Parade, since the Parade is coming to Boca Raton in July 2019. The next mini clinic members were introduced to (complete with mini cones and mini car) was autocross, presented by Steve Kidd, Autocross Chair. Autocross is one of the most competitive events GCR offers and he made some of the newcomers feel ready to give it a try. While all this was going on, Dottie Kidd coordinated the picnic activities and organization of the chili to be sampled. Chili’s ranged from mild to wild and each had exotic names such as clean exhaust, twin turbo, fire and fury etc., etc. What a surprise when most of the attendees chose to sample all of the chilis and dropped a poker chip in the box in front of their favorite! After all the dust settled, it was Don and Kim Broschard’s “OBX Turkey Chili” that took top honors, and they were awarded a “bragging rights” trophy to commemorate their achievement.

If all the above was not enough, the organizational team used this event to kick off fund raising activities for GCR’s newest charity/community service …..assistance to the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. Assistance is planned to take several forms, such as cash raised at events such as this, and the donation of (5) Porsche battery powered kids cars to be used by hospital staff to transport appropriate patients from their rooms to treatment within the hospital. The cook-off featured a 50/50 raffle and silent auction where the first $500 was raised to kick off the new charity/public service initiative. Stay tuned for more information on this project from Peter Olliviere. As the event drew to a close most members went home with a door prize, and /or left overs....however everyone left with new friends and excitement for events to come. Our thanks to all the volunteers that helped make this event a success as well as the donors of auction items and door prizes (9 Automotion, the Renzetti and Kidd families).

To Whom Much is Given . . . This article should reach some 2,700 of my fellow Gold Coast Region PCA Members, and for those that take the time to read it, should end up feeling pretty darn good about themselves. Why, you ask? Because look how lucky we are. I’m pretty sure that some of us are in the 1% group, and if not we are close enough to be kissing cousins. The other 99% I don’t think are standing on any food lines. We get to indulge ourselves with Porsches as a hobby. We can afford the main requirement to be a member of PCA. (you must own a Porsche), and still have the ability to enjoy the events and adventures that owning that Porsche allows us to undertake. As I write this I’m thinking that in a couple of days we will have the “Chili Cook Off” picnic at Carlin Park, followed by the Jazz Potluck Dinner that same evening. As of this writing we have over 100 members signed up for the picnic, and more than 100 for the Jazz Dinner. The best part is that other than bringing a dish to share these events cost members nothing. The fun doesn’t stop with those types of events. Just recently 140 of us spent the weekend at Sanibel Island. We got special rates that made it affordable for everyone, and to top it off we had several great meals

16

Die Porsche

together. I also want to mention, The Fort Lauderdale, Winterfest Boat Parade coming in December, that event is sold out as 130 took advantage of promises to be a tremendous fun event, to close out the year. It’s amazing what $45.00 a year in membership dues give you in return! But, “to whom much is given, much is expected.” in return. In spite of the above, it surprising that as far as charitable giving goes, we are almost a “no show”. In the 18 years that I have been a member of this Club, I have observed that we do not exert much energy towards charitable giving. This is not to say that we have done nothing, that’s not the case. I have seen efforts toward Toys for Tots, Wounded Warriors and other small groups, however if we were to be honest with ourselves, these efforts have not amounted to much. Take a look at the numbers. We are a region with 2700 members, if we each donated the cost of one quart of oil for our cars, think of the impact it could make. I understand that not everyone will kick in the cost of a quart of oil, but we can envision a good percentage going for the equivalent of an oil change. What’s the problem, why aren’t we more effective in our charitable work? I think the answer is as simple as the lack of a

Kassette |

November 2018

by Peter Olliviere cohesive program for our members to rally around. To address this short coming, the Board of Directors have first chosen what we think is a charity that meets the club’s requirements. These requirement are simple! Local in nature, meaning covering the entire region, help the most vulnerable of us, kids, have a direct impact on the life of those we are giving too, and direct involvement. With those requirements in mind, the Board has formed a partnership with Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. After several meetings with the president and CEO of both Joe DiMaggio and its parent Memorial Healthcare Systems, we are creating the Gold Coast Region “Driving for Life Fund” This fund will be supported directly by donations from the Club and from individual members and administered by the hospital. It is designed to offer direct funding to child’s special needs. For instance, if child needs a special service outside what is normally covered, the fund can supplement that expense directly. One of the special things that Joe DiMaggio Hospital does is, it transports some of the kids around the facility in electric kid cars, like power wheels. This practice has been found to put the children in a more receptive frame of mind when they are facing difficult medical procedures. The first big step that The Gold Coast Region PCA will be undertaking in our new partnership will be to donate 4 Electric Porsches to the hospital to continue this practice, but to do it in a Porsche. Now with the creation of a program, the challenge is up to you, the members, to make sure that the promise we make to assist these children is kept. You will see several opportunities to give to the “Driving for Life Fund” when you sign up for events. We are asking you to click on the link and contribute to the “Driving for Life Fund”, thus supporting the children at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. Your contribution, whether one quart of oil, or a complete oil change, is important, but when deciding please remember it takes more than one quart of oil to do an oil change. Thanks In advance. DRIVING FOR LIFE

From the Members: A Racing Superhero Surprise!

by Nanci Massey As you know, our Boca Porches and Pancakes group meets the first Saturday of each month. It’s always a wonderful time to interact with other Porsche lovers and share in their adventures with their cars. This past month we had a very wonderful surprise…joining us on Saturday was world renown racing car champion and Porsche Legend, Derek Bell!!! You may know this British racing car driver best for his successful wins at the Le Mans 24 hours five times, the Daytona 24 three times and the World Sportscar Championship twice! (in addition to other racing accomplishments, books and even his Walk of Fame handprints at Le Mans). It just so happened my husband, Mike, wore his Steve Mc Queen Solar Production Porsche shirt to breakfast. Mr. Bell approached Mike and ask him if he knew what Solar Production was. Mike replied that it was Steve McQueen’s movie production company, this surprised Mr. Bell who then began to tell the story of how he spent time working and getting to know Mr. McQueen during the production of Le Mans. He told of how passionate Mr. McQueen was about racing and Porsches in particular. How Mr. McQueen sought insight from Mr. Bell and how, towards the end of production they had become so close they rented a chalet together and both gentlemen and their families lived together until the film had wrapped. Mike thanked him for all the wonderful stories about his career, expressed his gratitude for Mr. Bell coming to our breakfast, and that he was welcome back anytime. Mike knew it was fate and by wearing this t shirt, his childhood superhero had come to life!

Tech Corner :

Fresh Green Article by Pedro P. Bonilla, Tech Editor

If you’ve ever been to a PCA Club Race, you’ve seen a bunch of people in their “Fresh Green” (that’s the actual name of the color) shirts all over the track. These people, who come from all parts of the Country, are volunteers from PCA National Club Racing and include, most likely: the Race Steward(s), Timing & Scoring personnel, and the Scrutineers (Scruts) among others.

The PCA National Club Racing team has two primary objectives for every Club Race: First and foremost is SAFETY and second to make sure that the Racing RULES and REGULATIONS are enforced. Race Stewards The Stewards run the race and are responsible for the Team. Depending on the number of cars racing, you may find one or more Stewards present. They start their work months before an event, communicating with the PCA personnel who will be working the race to make sure that travel and lodging arrangements are coordinated. They also work very closely with the event’s Regional Organizing Committee to assure that all loose ends are tied before the event starts

Some tracks have their own timing loops which can be tied into their systems, but more often than not they have to set up from scratch and build or rebuild their own timing loops that need to work with each and every unique transponder installed in each and every racecar. They also keep track of finishing places and championship points for all pertinent contests.

and that everything runs smoothly once it does. During the event the Steward(s) is the Boss. He or she is in constant communication with every single department. They deal with any and all issues, apply sanctions if needed, and theirs is the final word, so you may appreciate how stressful their job is. Timing & Scoring This team is responsible for making sure that each and every racer is timed to the millisecond during practice sessions, qualifying sessions, and races. They time each lap for each participant and they also control the in-pit times during the mandatory pit stops in the Enduros. Scrutineers (Scruts) This is my group since I’m a Scrut. We are the most hated group during a race because we “disrupt” the racers by

Timing and Scoring posts these times after every session so that racers and their teams can study them and make adjustments if necessary.

doing scheduled and random inspections and looking for any safety and/or rules infractions We are also the Steward’s on-track eyes and ears and convey their messages to racers.

Grid: where a quick safety inspection is performed on each car before it goes on track Black Flag: where any car that has had an on-track incident must report to

Nevertheless, after the day is over we do get a lot of ‘thank you’s” from the racers since, they understand that we work for them (when adrenaline is no longer flowing and their helmet is off) .

If any car has an on-track incident we make sure that the driver visits Medical and fills out their Incident Report and we also write up a Scrutineer’s Incident Report. All three, driver and the two reports go to the Steward who studies the incident and applies sanctions if necessary.

We start to work a few days before the event when we receive the official roster from the National Licensing and Program Coordinator. This roster is studied by the Scruts and is generally sorted into lists that we can quickly refer to during the event. These lists contains the driver’s name, car number, class, minimum weight, transponder number and other important information pertinent to the race. We arrive the day before the race, together with the rest of the National Team and immediately set up Tech Inspection. After a racer is officially registered, we check each and every car’s logbook or issue a new one if it’s the car’s first race with PCA. The logbook contains the car’s complete information from roll cage gauge, race seat type and manufacturing date, harness’ date, fire suppression system, electrical cut-off switch, window and or roof net, protective clothing, type of in-car video recording, etc. Logbooks also keep a detailed record of any changes done to the car from race to race as well as entries from the Scruts if and when they find any discrepancies with the rules and regulations. During the rest of the event we also man different stations: Tech: where cars are technically inspected Scales: where cars are weighed to make sure they meet the minimum class weight Random Inspections: showing up at any car and scrutinizing it for safety and rules

After the last race of the event, we each pack up all our gear and try to catch our respective flights back home. Then we send our notes to the Lead Scrut who prepares a full report of the event from our perspective. This report gets shared between al National Scrutineers so that we can learn and try to make the system better for the next event.

Sometimes the “fresh green” shirts are covered with foul weather gear, because, if we can borrow from the USPS: Neither snow nor rain nor heat or gloom of night stays these scruts from their swift completion of their job! It is grueling work for each and every one of the PCA National Club Racing

Team members. We are all volunteers, and most are current or former racers who want to give back to the Club for all the enjoyment we have received throughout the years.

Autocross Update Summer in South Florida is too hot to autocross so we typically take a pause for June, July and August. As is customary, we picked back up in mid September for Event # 5 at Sebring. Mid September in Sebring can be very hot, very wet or a dab of both. This year it was just hot....but we still had 35 autocrossers come out and compete on the grippy concrete Sebring offers. This AutoX was truly a Multi region Event, with Gold Coast and Everglades Regions as the host regions, Suncoast Region (thanks Amy and Denise) supplying the AutoX site and participants from other regions in Zone 12. With this partnership we were able to to provide lunch for all participants and trophies for class winners (thanks Porsche of Naples and Porsche of Ft. Meyers). Additionally Steve Kidd (Gold Coast) and Tom Kring (Everglades) put on an AutoX Clinic for newcomers to introduce them to the fun and challenges autocrossing offers. The 10 students at the clinic reported that this introduction was great and they feel a lot more comfortable about attending their next AutoX with this knowledge. While the AX course was a little shorter than planned (that's a whole other story...see me over a cold beverage for details), it did incorporate all the major elements of any good course and had sections for both the faster (991's and higher HP cars) and “momentum” cars....think Miata's and 944's. Everyone got 8 DRY runs and lots of smiles and camaraderie. The Fastest time of the day went to Mike Drake of Everglades Region in his 991 Carrera S. Our fastest newcomer was Nestor Sanchez, who along with his wife Naomi attended the clinic and described themselves as being hooked for more autocross action. For a complete listing of times, check either the Gold Coast or Everglades Regions websites. Also...If you are not familiar with one of our newest initiatives, we have had live timing (thanks Ian) working at our last 2 events, and plan to again have it at our October and November events. To use this during an AX event, go to http://www.goldcoastregion.org/axlive on your smart phone

by Steve Kidd, Autocross Chair and you can see times within 30 seconds after a car goes thru the finish line. It's sorted by class so you can see specifically how you are doing against your competition. BTW.....I almost forgot that in addition to all the fun described above, one additional activity was participation in the Suncoast track tour just prior to our AX start. Here is an update of our final event for 2018: Event 7 November 11 a Sunday event at BB&T. This will be our final event of the year and typically our Porsche Ladies go free day. This event typically determines who the class champs for 2018 will be. Please stay posted as the location and date may change based on the outcome of our October event. BBT has re-surfaced the lot and may be monitoring for damage. If it is determined that autocrossing damages the new topping, we may no longer have BBT as a site. If this happens we will ask for a lot of help to secure a new “home” AX site. As always a big thanks to all our regular participants, instructors and team of volunteers that organize, set-up, tear down and do 100's of behind the scene details that make these events possible. Also a huge thanks to Jack Fuller for coming out Friday afternoon and helping set up the . Jack towed his golf cart out to the side and used it to to drive cones around while we set the course....a huge help. BTW ...Jack and BJ Fuller are some of our most senior members, joining PCA back in the 60's News, reminders and 2018 updates: • Everyone is now required to pre register for any AutoX on Clubregistration.net… Please consult the GCR website and Kassette for all Autocross photos & results. • Porsche classes are loosely based on the PCR’s for medium size regions, with minor regional adjustments. The major difference will be the addition of SN (stock car/novice driver) for men and ladies. These classes are strictly for newcomers only. Please see Steve for any car class questions or if you wish to run as a novice. We reserve the right to make additional class/rule changes as needed. • Our 2018 series are planned to be 7 events. To be eligible for an end of the year award, competitors must run in at least 4 events in the same class. Each competitor’s top 4 finishes will be calculated and an end of the year class champion and possibly runner-up (depending on class size) will be chosen. In case of a tie, additional events will be added until the tie is broken. Year-end class champion awards will be presented. • No passengers except for an

approved AX instructor driving or in the car instructing. • Questions…..call Steve or Dottie Kidd 954-946-3196 • For 2019 our advise is please register early. As a reward, early registrants will see no increase in price, however those registering the last week before the event will see an increase in event registration price. While we typically do not allow on-site registration, if we do, your registration fee will increase to a minimum of $55.The best advise is to register early, as some events do have caps and we charge a premium fee if you register 1 week or less from the event date. • Body work/Metal fabrication help needed. We need a volunteer(s) with skills to help fix our AX trailer doors. Over the last several events the winds have caught the doors and damaged the aluminum frame/ doors so they don't close properly.

Our team has made some temporary repairs, and we're able to just barely get the doors closed....but we need a more permanent fix. I can send pictures if needed and will offer a special deal on future AutoX entries if you can properly fix the trailer. Think your up for the challenge??..call Steve 954-292-3915 for more details.
