Hello, everyone!! For those who attend the Kids Racing for Life event at Sebring International Raceway on September 8-9, thank you! Kids with major illnesses and their families had a chance to forget their problems for a while and enjoy the track. The event was a success and everyone had a great time taking the kids for rides. It was for a good cause which made it even better! On October 13, there is an AutoX at the BB&T Center in Sunrise, Florida. There likely is no better way to learn car control
the time to join other Porsche fans and talk about your favorite subjects: your car and Porsche! Also, we have our Thursday Socials on the third Thursday of every month where you can do the same thing! Please check your emails and the calendar on our website for updated times and locations. These socials are a great way to get to know new members and make them feel welcome!
than an AutoX and you have the car to do it! That same day we have Oktoberfest at Biergarten in Boca. Check out our website for details. On October 20-21, there is a DE at Homestead Miami Speedway. Although this is not a GCR sponsored/hosted event, it is an excellent chance to take your car on a track and learn how to drive it fast but safe. As usual, Porsches & Pancakes is on the first Saturday of the month. Please take

Editor’s Notes Welcome to this years Parade issue. We did not have a large attendance from Gold Coast but the members that attended were very competitive. Kyle Rathbun took 1st place in his class on the Autocross track. Steve and Dottie Kidd also did well in several events. You can read about their experience and also get an idea from Paul Raben about attending Parade for the first time. If you have never been to a national PCA Parade that is hosted all over the US. it is like our Zonefest but for all regions. We hope that these articles are informa-

tive because we would like to see a large attendance from our region next year since we are hosting the event in 2019 in Boca Raton. We are working to prepare the members with several classes that will be held starting with a Concours School and Autocross talk at the Carlin Park. We will continue with training classes in 2019. This is only the second time that Gold Coast has hosted Parade. In 2003 we cohosted Parade in Tampa with Suncoast. It requires a lot of planning and a lot of volunteer support. Be sure to sign up as a volunteer and enjoy being part of the
event along with a special attendance to the Volunteer Party. When my wife and I attended our first Porsche Parade we were fortunate to win a set of Michelin tires. Please check out the article about having access to receive an e-mail to enable voting for the GCR elections. Support the club with your vote and get involved with the growth of GCR which has been one of the fastest growing regions in PCA. Porsche Parade
Part 1 ..... Highlights from the 2018 Parade in Lake of the Ozarks by Steve and Dottie Kidd
Writing an article about Parade could fill up an entire issue of Kassette, so in all fairness to other writers, I’ll break this article into 2 abbreviated parts. Part 1 will outline some of the major events from this year’s parade with focus on the activities Dottie and I participated in. Parade is so big that there are multiple happenings going on at any given time. For example, there may be a competitive event (Autocross, Rally, Tech Quiz or Concours) at the same time as tours, golf matches, boat cruises and other types of outings. Part 2 will touch on past Parades in Florida (the 1968 Parade in West Palm Beach and the 2003 Parade in the Tampa area) as well as the future….. next year’s Parade in Boca Raton. Yes…in case you haven’t heard, the Boca Raton Resort will be the host hotel for the 2019 Porsche Parade scheduled for the last week in July. A lot more details in my part 2 article, so make sure you read the November Kassette. Let me re-focus…….here it is… Steve and Dottie’s impressions of 2018 PARADE #63…..in no particular order. GENERAL: The 2018 Parade was held in Missouri in part of Lake of the Ozarks known as Osage Beach the 2nd week in July. The dates change from parade to parade, however it most always is in late June or July and at location at least half way across the country from where it was
the prior year. Unlike some parades, there was no shortage of reasonably priced lodging in the Osage Beach area. One of the factors PCA National uses in choosing parade sites is if the area can handle the 2,000 or so PCA members and somewhere around 1,000 Porsches. This year the community of Osage Beach and Tan Tara Resort did a fabulous job of accommodating all the banquets, Parade registration & hospitality, seminars, parking, tours, etc. and it was all done with friendly courteous service. There were 13 members from Gold Coast Region attending this year’s Parade (Randy/Michelle Gananathan, Paul/Peggy Raben, Jonathan/Becky Brownfield, Steve/Lynn
Volunteering at welcome banquet
Bamdas, Kyle/Deborah Rathbun, Steve/ Dottie Kidd and Fred Kohly (who went out for several days to serve as a Concours Judge) as well as many members from other parts of Florida/Zone 12. Parade registration is done on line 3-4 months before Parade starts, with one on the biggest problems being deciding which events we were willing to miss as each day started around 7:00 am and continued until well into the evening. Just not enough time. There was no way to do it all! BANQUETS: Five evenings there were banquets scheduled (Welcome Party, Concours, TSD Rally Awards, Autocross Awards, and Victory Banquet) for not only great food but Parade registration and volunteer sign up

entertainment, awards and a chance to meet new Porsche members and old friends. Each banquet had its own agenda, and most included great door prizes such as sets of tires or transporting your Porsche to next year’s Parade. The best door prize of all is a fully paid trip for two to Germany which includes a tour of the
October 2018
Factory and Porsche Museum. This grand prize is awarded at the Victory Banquet, and while Dottie and I have never won this prize, we know folks that have. Who knows……. maybe you could win that trip at the Boca Parade in 2019! TOURS: So many tours, so little time! How to choose between a dinner cruise on the lake, tour to local sites of interest, and drives on the types of roads we don’t have in South Florida. There are usually several structured tour options each day as well as DIY tours with directions for those that want less structure and the ability to go at their own pace. Dottie and I only had enough time to do several DIY outings. One included a visit to a Ha Ha Tonka State Park where Fred Kohly (in flip flops), Dottie & I hiked to a natural bridge, a stone castle, and natural spring and crystal clear pool bubbling out of the hillside. Dottie and I didn’t make any of the structured tours, but some of the other GCR members did and you should be
reading about their adventures in Kassette. RALLIES: There were two types of Rallies offered at this Parade….which is usually the case for most Parades: For the more serious, the time/speed/ distance (TSD) Rally thru central Missouri countryside, or a “just for fun” Gimmick Rally. This year was about identifying landmarks from old post cards along historic Route 66. Most of the buildings had changed considerably since the pictures were taken some 50-70 years ago, and we had to really use our imagination and ingenuity to identify those structures AND put them in the order as they appeared on the rally route. For Dottie and I we started around 8:00 am and did not turn in our score card until 5:59 (they were scheduled to close at 6:00). We did have time to stop along the way and visit places like Uranus (I’m not kidding… there is a tourist trap by this name). This Gimmick Rally was all about having fun and driving Route 66, but it was a competitive event and Dottie and I finished around 24th in a field of about 80+. Trophies went 18 deep so we didn’t trophy here but we did in other competitive events. We chose not to participate in the TSD Rally which requires a driver and navigator who must work together like a well-oiled machine. It focused on maintaining the prescribed speed and following a set of route instructions exactly, while avoiding traps and tricks rally masters throw in to draw participants off course. This can be stressful and husband / wife teams are not always well suited for the TSD rally, especially at Parade. More about TSD rallies in future Kassette articles. TECH QUIZ: If you think you know a lot about Porsche history and the mechanicals of each model, then this event is for you. Luckily most questions are multiple choice or true/false so you can guess your way thru it. The Technical and Historical Quiz comprised of 50 general questions, 25 model specific (you choose the model range you are most familiar with), and 5 tie-breakers. Dottie and I competed in this event and I won
my class and got a nice trophy. Dottie not only won her class, but got best woman’s score overall… for which she got a nice trophy for winning her class, a bigger trophy for Overall Woman’s score, as well as her name on the permanent trophy that is displayed at PCA headquarters, AND a set of Michelin tires (value Small section of the Concours best prepared Porsches in the world, with some really prestigious awards bestowed on the best of the best. Most cars arrive in near perfect condition, with final detailing lasting several days in a covered garage. A visit to the prep area is in order to really appreciate the work that it takes to produce a winning car. At this Parade, as well as others we have attended, there were several wash stations for Concours as well as general cleaning after tours etc. AUTOCROSS: It should come as no surprise to most of you that this is our favorite Parade event. Two whole days of intense competition, and while competitors will only run one day and one heat (about a ½ day time Steve lined up for the Autocross runs in his 944
up to $1600). We plan to start including some of the Tech Quiz questions in future Kassettes so you can see what the Parade Tech Quiz is about. (They do repeat some questions from prior Parade Tech Quizzes) CONCOURS: How clean and perfect can you get your Porsche? Concours at the National level is a whole different level than anything seen at Regional events.
Lots of classes and serious competition. Dottie and I concoured at Parade for several years when the GT3 was newer and even trophied. However, to win at this level involves a serious investment of time, elbow grease and in the case of restored classes….money. Dottie and I now judge or help out staging cars on the judging field, but admire those members that commit to showing their Porsches at this level of competition. The end result is a display of some of the cleanest and

commitment), most autocrossers are there for at least one whole day competing, volunteering, cajoling, walking the course and experiencing what running a course of cones at the highest level . This year’s autocross course was on an airport runway, but was still 2nd gear, even for our 944. Want to test out one of the latest Michelin tires (Pilot Sport Cup 2’s or similar) on a new Porsche Boxster or Cayman? This activity offers 2 hot laps on an autocross-like course with you at the wheel and a Michelin rep riding shot gun. What a blast… and this experience was offered free of charge by Dottie and Steve get 1st class...Tech Quiz horse power, 14 years newer technology, and PDK. It is important to class your car correctly because if you don’t, and are in trophy position, be prepared for a protest and possible disqualification. Most of the drivers are class winners at their Regional level so competition is intense in most classes. Gold Coast Region was well represented on the podium as follows: Kyle Rathbun 1st in class of 5, Dottie 1st in class of 4, Steve 2nd in class of 7 and Jonathan Brownfield 3rd in class of 5. Trophies were really unique and we’re glad GCR could pick up some hardware. Dottie and I hope to prepare for the AutoX at the Boca Parade like we did in Savannah, getting all our GCR autocrossers classed to win the maximize autocross trophy count possible for our Region. MICHELIN DRIVE & EXPERIENCE:
Michelin! PARADE KIDS: If you thought the adults had too many events to choose from, you should see the kids’ schedule. PCA Parade Kids program didn’t give the kids time to rest. Beginning on Sunday with registration and a kids’ Welcome Party, the activities never stopped and included activities such as arts & crafts projects, a mini-concours where the kids painted a wooden car for judging, an RC car race, an “anycross” using any kind of bike, skate board etc. followed by an ice cream social to name a few! Kids of all ages were welcome, so if you have kids, plan on bringing them to Parade and enroll them in the PARADE KIDS activities. Also be sure to sign them up for PCA Juniors so they can have their own membership and welcome gift from PCA.org. PARADE OF PORSCHES: At the end of parade week (Saturday afternoon) the Parade of Porsches was a sight to behold! A procession of hundreds of Porsches thru town and down the road for camaraderie and photo opps. Some of the cars were caught in a downpour, but that did not dampen the spirit of this activity. VOLUNTEERING: Volunteering at Parade has Parade gimmick rally ....There really is a Uranus

become almost expected, and it seemed most of the attendees were wearing the red volunteer shirts at some point in time during the week. Working a few shifts at one of the activities is a great way to meet new people and help out. If a parade attendee works at least 2 shifts, they can attend the Volunteer Party on Saturday. The Volunteer Party offers a great lunch, lots of give-a-ways (hats and shirts galore as well as items from the goodie store and sponsors) and several more opportunities to win a set of tires. While Dottie and I did not win any tires here, we enjoyed our 4 work assignment shifts. We have done just about every type of volunteer assignment over our 9 Parades we attended, and this year our official assignments were to assist at registration, at a banquet, and 2 shifts on the AutoX Protest Committee. OTHER PARADE ACTIVITIES: If you did all of the above and feel like you may need to do just one more thing during Parade Week, sign up for a golf tournament, visit the indoor water park, participate in RC car competition, enjoy an ice cream social, enter an item in the art show, attend one of the many tech academy classes, try a cooking class, wine, beer and bourbon tasting, or test your physical ability in the 5K run. Participants may also want to try some of the local area’s other attractions and adventures such as exploring, swimming, boating, fishing or just kicking back and enjoy sightseeing or activities not found in South Florida. In addition, GCR member Jonathan Brownfield’s family hosted a party for all Parade attendees at their Community Club House where they have a 2nd home. Thanks again Jonathan and Becky for a wonderful evening. SPONSORS: Just remember, all of this would not be possible without the many sponsors such as Michelin and Pirelli, and other names you see in the Panorama. Many set up displays in the hospitality room where participants can chill out, grab a snack or drink, or hear about what products our sponsors have to offer. HISTORIC DISPLAY: One of the most
impressive Concours components was the Historic Display of Porsches from slated time periods. The Parade Committee sourced unique cars representing significant eras in Porsche past. Some of the cars were rare and / or museum quality, some were daily drivers with an interesting history. All were exceptionally beautiful and a reminder of why Porsche is our favorite marque. AWARDS AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR 2019: Each of the banquets recognized winners from one or more of the competitive activities such as Concours, Autocross, the Rallies, Tech Quiz and others. Also recognized were the individuals and Regions that make PCA the great organization it is. While Gold Coast Region did not win any of the most prestigious awards such as Region of the Year, Enthusiast of the Year, Family of the Year, Public Service or Charity acknowledgements, Newsletter/ website awards, or Membership Growth
recognitions in 2018, we hope that our programs and activities will be recognized in 2019 when we have a large number of Parade attendees from Gold Coast Region. GCR will need to continue with and step up our activities, as well as get volunteers to write the necessary submissions that are considered by a team of judges if we want to be Dottie and Fred hiking at the natural bridge in contention for an award. So I were awarded PCA Family of the consider this a call for volunteers to help Year award at the 2015 Parade for our write submissions in various categories. contributions in 2014. Our First Porsche Parade by Paul & Peggy Raben We have never been able to attend a Porsche Parade, having had our own business and being the only two employees there was no one to cover. But this year was different, we were no longer working we could spend the time without worrying about work to attend our very first Porsche Parade in Lake of the Oazarks Missouri. After learning to do this from long time parade attendees we registered online as soon as it opened. We were able get a room in the main building where most of the action is. It’s not that there aren’t other places to stay, it’s just you may spend quite a bit of time driving back and forth from your room to the venue. We registered minutes after it opened and were assigned #344 that’s how quickly people start to sign up. Being our first Parade we weren’t going to take any chances being off site and having to navigate all the variables that present themselves when attending this big of an event. So, we are registered, we have a room on site and we are ready to go. In planning our route we decide to take our time getting there by making a couple of stops on the way. Also, we don’t want to be on the highway the whole time taking away from some of the fun driving the back roads offers. So we pack up 996 Turbo with way too much stuff and head off to our first stop of Birmingham, Alabama for a couple of days. After that our next destination was Memphis, Tennessee for three days then back on the road again. It is 1,384.7

miles if you drive the shortest route from our home in Fort Lauderdale to lake of the Ozarks but what fun would that be. There are roads along the way that were made specifically for a Porsche especially an all wheel drive turbo charged Porsche. We finally arive at the the resort hosting the Parade and we were swept up by the amount of activity happening all around us. First you have to get checked in, find a place to park, then unpack the overstuffed car and get all the that up to the room. Now don’t think it is time to rest because there is so much going on and details to be taken care of that we were right back down to the main building to check in with the Parade. Registration is at first glance chaotic, but it’s not. It is organized by last name and goes rather quickly even though you are in a room with hundreds of people all trying to do the same thing. You just go from station to station to get the different pieces of the puzzle of registration. At that time you get the schedule of events and your tickets for everything you’ve pre-registered for. Like 750 other attendees we volunteered to help at specific events and had to go to the volunteer desk to confirm our assignments. Peggy volunteered for the art show and Parade store, my assigments were the concours and ice and water delivery. You sign up for volunteer jobs when you register for the

event itself. Peggy and I enjoyed doing this because you get a feel for the people involved and it’s nice to help out when you can. There so many thing to do in the eight days of the Parade that you cannot possibly do all so you have to pick and choose. There are banquets, dinner cruises, luncheons, boat tours, wine tours, driving events and so on and so on, you get the idea. Before the welcome banquet we went to a Zone 12 get together to meet people from the other regions in Florida. Right after that we went straight to the welcome banquet, all this was just the first night! It looked like almost everyone else that had arrived attended the banquet also. It was held outside on the golf course and it was served buffet style. It was a bit hot but once the sun was behind the trees it wasn’t too bad. I think for everyone a highlight of the evening was the Taycan (Mission E) unveiling after the meal. It is spectacular in person and photos don’t do it justice. That was pretty much it for day one, except for the fireworks display on lake put on by the resort before we all went to our rooms to recover. The activities of the days following were non-stop. Volunteering for the concours had me starting at 4:30 am, once I finished my assignment it was back to room to get Peggy to come back and see the cars now that the sun is up! Between events you get to talk to people, go to the
Thanks to over 600 Volunteers hospitality suite and just hang out. Then it’s time for the dinner cruise on the lake; it is a beautiful area so it was fun to get out and see it on the water. Finally it’s time to rest up for the next day’s activities. One of the great things done at Parade are seminars/tech talks. You can pre-register for these or do like I did, just show up and sit in as they span a few days and multiple times during the day. They are very informative and the speakers are knowledgeable, you will learn things about Porsches that will surprise you. Note, if you do pre register you get a t-shirt! After that you head to the hospitality suite to relax or go have something to eat, go swimming, play golf or just get
Concours ready for the next thing you signed up for. The nice thing about Parade is that everyone is happy to be there and energetic and trying to make it a really memorable event. In the following days Peggy volunteered at the art show and Parade store which is in the same large room with vendor boothes. Porsche NA had a large area laid out with different sections for customer relations, a sales area, new product displays and freebies (always need freebies). In the center of the same
room is the hospitality suite. Plus there were new and classic Porsches on display throughout the main building. There so much to take in you have to just sit down and take a break every so often. I counted 150 scheduled events in the book we were handed in our welcome packet which illustrates just how much there is to do. The longest event we attended was the gimmick rally. If you have never done one, it consists of driving directions and clues for things to find. So not only are you following driving directions you are also looking for buildings signs, bridges, landmarks or whatever all while trying to stay on course. While we did not get a very good score we did enjoy being on Historic Route 66 most of the way. It was an interesting, but somewhat long drive that was very enjoyable. In the next couple of days we attended the Autocross, RC races, an ice cream social, the volunteer lunch and even had time to explore local restaurants. These were followed by two big events: the Parade of Porsches and the Victory Banquet both on the final day. The Parade of Porsches consists of anyone that wants, gathering at one location then heading out in a long line of Porsches. Even though it was pouring down rain there were at least 150 cars driving through town where enthusiastic flag waving people were lined up to see the “Parade of Porsches”. It was fun once it finally stopped raining. And finally the closing banquet where everyone gets together for dinner. The meal and the people we met at our table were great and afterwards they start handing out prizes. Peggy being ever so helpful was a prize runner along with 20 other helpers. Lucky me I won a quart of oil, a prize I will cherish always (it is now lubricating my lawn mower).
Deb and Kyle Rathbun

In the morning we loaded all the stuff back in the car, plus MORE stuff acquired during the eight days and headed back in a round about way to South Florida. Porsche Parade is something every PCA members should attend at least once, if you don’t you are missing out on a great experience and the true meaning of the club, and that is “it’s not just the cars, it’s the people”! Tech Corner :
The CLU Article by Pedro P. Bonilla, Tech Editor
In past tech articles published here, we’ve discussed many of the different components that govern our car’s systems. Today we’ll discuss the Central Locking Unit or CLU (sometimes called the Immobilizer). The CLU is found in all 986, 987, 996 and 997 (Boxsters ’97 -‘12, Caymans ’06 -’12 and Carreras ’99 -‘12). This little black box controls, among others: • Keyless entry (remotes) • Electric windows • Front and rear trunk lids • Power locks • Cabin motion detection • Alarm • Immobilizer function • Soft top operation
As you can see from the list of items it controls, it’s an important part for your car and care should be taken to keep it in good working order. The CLU is basically a computer with a memory that can only be programmed once. It stores in memory the security codes for each one of the keyless entry remotes as well as the security codes for each of your keys’ immobilizer “pills”.

The CLU is a very reliable unit that should give you years of trouble-free operation but there’s one very important issue: Porsche located it in the lowest point of the passenger cabin, under the driver’s seat. It is very well protected, but if there is water incursion into the cabin, from a window left open during a rainstorm or from clogged drains, it will flood. If this happens to you, DO NOT put the key in the ignition or try to operate any electrical component. As soon as possible, disconnect the negative side of the battery. Remove the four bolts that secure the driver seat rails to the car’s floor panel. Lean the seat’s backrest forward as far as it will go and then lift the bottom front edge of the seat past the bottom of the steering wheel. Now, just let the steering wheel support the seat in place and you’ll have ample room to inspect and work on the CLU. If there is a lot of water you need to remove it quickly so no more damage is done. You can completely remove the seat(s) to allow for better aeration. I’ve used a wet-dry vacuum with much success to take most of the water out of the carpet. Afterwards, an electric fan will help dry the rest (generally overnight). One important note is that we’re talking about fresh water. If the incursion was sea water the CLU (and most of the electrical harness and components are toast. Don’t waste your time. Call your insurance company and don’t be surprised if they want to total the car.

Getting back to the CLU, remove it by turning the plastic fastener ¼ turn counterclockwise with a Phillips screwdriver. Lift the front edge and pull the unit forward. This releases it from the chassis and gives you enough room to disconnect the two wiring harness connectors. Take the unit out of the car and open the plastic case. It’s closed with multiple plastic lock-tabs that can be pried open with any edged tool. Remove the printed circuit board from the plastic case and inspect carefully. If it has been flooded you will most likely see discoloration and or oxidation of the circuit board. Place the circuit board in a shallow plastic container just a bit bigger than the board itself and pour isopropyl alcohol over it until it is fully immersed (you can find isopropyl alcohol at any pharmacy or home improvement center). Leave it immersed for at least 30 minutes. During that time you can softly brush away any oxidation or deposits with an old toothbrush or similar. Isopropyl alcohol will displace all of the water on the different components of the circuit board.
After the 30 minutes, remove the board from the alcohol, let it drip as much as possible and place on a clean, dry paper towel. Don’t try to heat or blow-dry it. Let it dry at room temp for a couple of hours. After everything is dry, including the carpet, reassemble the CLU and return to it’s original location. Note that there is a small blue micro fuse on one edge of the CLU’s case. Check to make sure it’s not blown and replace with a new one if it has. Reconnect the wiring harness and secure the CLU in place with its fastener. Reconnect the negative battery cable and test your unit. If you caught it in time chances are very good that you can get it back in full operation. I’ve been successful in about 60% of the cases. If the unit was damaged beyond repair, you’ll have to get it replaced. It will have to be a new unit (which can be costly) because as we explained earlier it cannot be reprogrammed. To program a new CLU, a PST-II or
PIWIS unit must be used and the tech doing the programming also needs to have your car’s specific IPASS codes that are only available from Porsche so that they can put back the original codes for the remote(s) and the key(s). Always make sure that the windows are fully closed, especially in the rainy season. Also, there are several drains around the car that need to be kept clean of debris always. If these are clogged, as strong downpour can overwhelm them and water will flood the cabin. Boxsters, Caymans and Carreras have two drains in the front. One on each side of the battery tray, towards the firewall.
Boxsters also have a very important drain at the bottom of where the convertible top pivots. The best way to make sure they can drain well is by using a hose with a jet nozzle. Put the nozzle right up against the drain hole and let the water pressure clean it out. Water will drain out the bottom of the car.
