G
old Coast Region, PCA has a strong history of charitable giving as noted in the Die Porsche Kassette September 2021 issue. Our membership continued that theme this past month with a trip to the Ronald McDonald House Charities in Miami. Please read about this trip and the substantial financial contribution made through GCR PCA. We will continue to look for those opportunities to “give back” through personal and financial support as our time and available funds allow. Sharing is caring! During the most recent Gold Coast Board meeting, still Zooming, each of us was impressed with the efforts and quality of our committee chairpersons and events they are scheduling.
They are truly engaged toward resuming our in-person activities following months of caution and prudence. The Escape to the Cape held in late August was a phenomenal success (page 14). We have a Drivers Education session scheduled at PBIR the first weekend of October, to be followed the next weekend by a GCR Autocross up in Sebring. Our Social Committee has multiple events scheduled or in the works for this month and the next couple months. We have a Mountain Tour scheduled for mid-October, and a few additional “non-PCA” Porsche events we hope our members will attend to build the Gold Coast Region brand.
As we enter the final quarter of 2021 there are additional plans for our club to close out another challenging year. We expect to finish with flair and a good dose of Porsche camaraderie. I highly recommend you check your email, watch for text messages, continue to scour both the club website (www.goldcoastregion.org) and our Facebook page for information relating to all our activities. I believe there is a renewed enthusiasm building within Gold Coast Region Porsche Club of America. Having member participation in our activities will kindle that enthusiasm and grow the enjoyment of our Porsche vehicles. Get in your cars, let’s go for a ride. Peter

Membership Corner Hi! I’m Ian Gerada, the Gold Coast
Region’s Membership Chair. I’m the person who gives you monthly updates about events and all other things membership related. Thanks for stopping by and checking out our new Members Corner column of Die Porsche Kassette. Here I will be sharing some membership information such as new member numbers, membership stats, and an interesting topic or two. New Member Numbers As of September 1, 2021, our membership stands at 3,016, including 1,986 primary members and 1,030 co-members. Remember that if you are the primary member, you can always register a comember. Co-members are welcome to share in your PCA experience at no additional cost. Additionally, they’re invited to PCA events and receive their own user account on www.PCA.org. (Co-members must be at least 18 years of age to register).
Membership Stats Here are some interesting facts about our members: Did you know that the average length of membership to the Gold Coast region is 9 years, and that the average age of our members is 57 years old? What do you think is the most popular car color in our club? Email me your best guess to igerada@gmail.com; next month I will let you know the top ten car colors in our club. Celebrating the Porsche Boxster The Porsche Boxster turns 25 this year and to celebrate, Porsche has announced a special edition of the 718 Boxster, to be known as the Boxster 25. The year is 1993, and Porsche is on the verge of bankruptcy. While the 964 911 is Porsche’s best-selling vehicle, the aging 928 and newly released 968 continue to fail to capture the eye of would-be sports car owners, consistently falling short of Porsche’s targeted sales numbers. Porsche knew they needed something new to boost
sales, and at the 1993 Detroit Auto Show, Porsche unveiled an already greenlit concept car, the Boxster. This was a car with a name that highlighted what it was about: “Box” referring to the flat six engines, and “-ster” referring to its roadster body style. For the last 25 years the Porsche Boxster has been a mainstay for the brand as most enthusiasts’ first taste of the Porsche lifestyle. Happy 25th Porsche Boxster! Hope to see you all at the upcoming trip to Copperhead Lodge, located in the beautiful Georgia mountains! If you can’t make it, don’t stress; there will be more events scheduled to ensure you get your Porsche fix. If you prefer socializing virtually, I’m still hosting “virtual drinks” on the first Thursday of each month via Zoom. Be sure to look out for information on how to join in your E-News emails! Drive Safely, Ian Gerada Membership Chair |

Editor’s Notes The Kassette staff has been spending many hours on upgrading the features of our publication. One of our first priorities was to add more space for stories we hope our members will enjoy. We also are stiving to provide more value to our advertisers and sponsors. With the help of our graphics artists, m any pages have been redesigned, a nd more will be updated in future issues. Last month’s issue was a great example of the some of the changes resulting in a better presentation and flow of our material. The very positive feedback from members and GCR board tells us that we are making the right changes. In the words of our team, we are just getting started. Joining PCA is a great life enhancing experience, but it may lead to many questions. To help resolve those questions Ian Gerada, our Membership Chair, will be providing us with a new column: Monthly
Roger Fabel, Editor
Membership Corner. We look forward to learning more from Ian about Gold Coast membership, our history, and the makeup and nature of our club. Additionally, Ian Garada has been doing a wonderful job of emailing updates on both the Porsche & Pancake and Thirsty 3rd Thursdays regular monthly events. His information is accurate! As a result, the monthly Porsche & Pancake and Thirsty Thursday social events will no longer be published in the Kassette. These may be found on the GCR calendar as well. Complimentary to emailed updates, readers will find several flyers throughout the Kassette for the major upcoming events such as Octoberfest sponsored by Foreign Affairs (p.12), and Autocross in Sebring (p. 7) The “Photo of the Month” has been very well received (keep those submissions coming). Our team wanted to provide this
great feature with a special enhancement. Photo of the month was promoted to a prime location in the Kassette. It also has a new banner (title). We won’t spill the beans here, so look for it in this issue and let us know what you think of the change. Significantly, we were blessed with a visit to the Ronald McDonald House this past month. The Gold Coast and Suncoast Regions jointly administer the 48 Hours at Sebring Club Race and then split all proceeds, which are donated to Ronald McDonald House. GCR has been partnering with this valued organization for over twenty years. Giving is caring! We have temporarily removed the Classified Ad section so that it could be updated to a new format. The new submission process and format will be previewed next month.

GIVING BACK A PCA GOLD COAST TRADITION by Mark Johnson, Saff Writer On a warm Tuesday morning, August 24, 2021, members of the Gold Coast Region of Porsche Club of America drove to Miami, FL for a very special event. As a club, we were giving back. Often it is the giving of personal time, out-of-pocket contributions, or in-kind donations. This time it was a “BIG CHECK” that was significant and substantial. The recipient was Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) of South Florida. Ronald McDonald House is a 501(c) (3) corporation that creates, finds, and supports programs by providing lodging, meals, activities, and a community of care to critically ill children and their families who need to be near a hospital for treatment. They enable family-centered care while ensuring the complete family is fully supported and actively involved in their children’s care. The RMHC South Florida is a 31-bedroom facility located on the grounds of Jackson Memorial Hospital. They have helped 30,000 families since 1982. Now, our Gold Coast Region PCA has helped them! Gold Coast PCA members presented the RMHC Executive Director, Ms. Soraya
Rivera-Moya, and House Manager, Ms. Dawn Compres, with a check in the amount of $11,000 to support their efforts in our south Florida community.
$11,000 One might ask, where did PCA Gold Coast acquire such a large sum of money? Great question! As our members may recall, two Florida PCA Regions, Gold Coast (ours), and the Suncoast Region (Tampa Bay and surrounding area) co-sponsor and manage the annual 48 Hours at Sebring Club Race. This is an annual event held at the Sebring International Raceway. The 2021 edition of the 48 Hours at Sebring was run in early February and featured over 350 Porsche racers from all over the USA. It is a Porsche Club Racing event, and the first in the country every year. The ‘21 event actually raised a total of $22,000 in proceeds from the operations and the silent auction. These proceeds were evenly split between the two Regions.

The Suncoast Region makes their donation to the Tampa Bay area Ronald McDonald House Charities. Mr. Dan Smithyman is the Gold Coast Region Co-Chair for the 48 Hour event. He, along with Josh Breckeen, Suncoast Co-Chair, and many other members of both the Gold Coast and Suncoast Regions manage the premier Porsche Club Racing event. 48 Hours offers phenomenal club racing and camaraderie at one of the world’s premier racetracks. If you haven’t attended, make plans to get to Sebring in early February 2022 for the event. But don’t just “attend”: make a point to volunteer for the event; be involved! In Miami, GC-PCA the members who attended were Steve Kidd, Past President, Roger Fabel, Editor of Die Porsche Kassette, Christy Spangler, Director & Social Chair, and Mark Johnson, Staff Writer for the Kassette. The Gold Coast delivery team met with Ms. Soraya Rivera-Moya, Ms. Dawn Compres, and Ms. Nicole Betancourt, Development Coordinator for RMHC. Ms. Soraya introduced us to three of the families currently staying in Miami for various medical treatments. We were honored to meet the Denmark family from Clewiston, FL, the Moran Velez family from Ecuador, and the Mina family from Egypt. We spoke with the family members about their illness and the support and treatments they receive while housed at the Ronald McDonald House. The support provided by RMHC is exceptional and the families are truly grateful for the opportunity to stay at the House while their children are undergoing various treatments at the many hospitals and facilities in the immediate area. Roger Fabel, our editor, and himself a cancer survivor had a brief but powerful discussion with De’Arial Denmark during the visit to Ronald McDonald House. Rather than ask De’Arial what he was being treated for, Roger asked how
Gold Coast would like to arrange a club drive with 30 or more Porsches to provide a ride to the children, their family members and staff to celebrate the people and our relationship. They like Porsches as much as we do! Who knew? Let’s make it happen: the Cars, and the People!
The “Thumbs Up” Check Presentation to RMHC, L to R: Ms. Jacinth Holness, Dawn Compres, Flor Moran, De’Arial Denmark (back), Anita Paula Moran (stroller), Luis Moran, Ana Moran Velez, Soraya Rivera-Moya, Steve Kidd, Roger Fabel, Adam Michael (in mom’s arm), Manar Milad, Noah Michael, Michael Mina, and Christy Spangler.
his treatment was going. The young man went into detail about the quality of the hospitals (UM Sylvester Cancer Center, Jackson Memorial and others he has visited), as well as the care and support given by RMHC in Miami.
“Is it gone?” During the discussion, De’Arial asked Roger three times, “Is it gone?” referring to Roger’s cancer. Fortunately, our editor is doing well, but the question from the young man was not really about Roger. De’Arial was questioning his own hopes to defeat the disease and the opportunity to lead a normal life. This was not for Roger to answer, but the interaction worked to provide De’Arial Denmark and his mom, Ms. Jacinth Holness, with a bit of heart-to-heart support that is so important in dealing with such illnesses. The contribution Gold Coast provided Tuesday morning added substantially to the wellness of the children and their families staying at the Ronald McDonald House. Following the presentation of the GC PCA check and photo taking, Ms. RiveraMoya and the RMHC folks returned a gift to our club in appreciation of our support. Steve Kidd accepted a framed poem and photos on behalf of the club from RMHC. Soraya read the poem to the group.

It
started early Saturday morning when a large number of PCA members met at Porsche West Broward. Since I volunteered to take photos of the event, I arrived early to photograph the line-up of the many Porsches ready to “Escape to the Cape.” The drive across Alligator Alley was easy and everyone kept a respectable pace. We arrived at the first stop, the Boathouse Tiki Bar Restaurant in Fort Myers, where attendees from other regions met us for lunch. The restaurant was open-air and right on the river with beautiful views; it even had a pool. The service and food were top notch. The parking lot was filled with an impressive array of beautiful Porsches. The bright sunny day made all of the colors just pop, perfect for taking a lot of photos. Then onto the Westin Cape Coral Resort at Marina Village to check in and get settled. The resort offered contemporary rooms with sweeping views of the Gulf and the Caloosahatchee River. I took a break from the photography to join the other members cooling off and relaxing in and around the pool with cocktails from the Nauti Mermaid Bar & Grill. I drove “Shadow,” my 1985 944, and met a young lady from the Citrus Region in Orlando, who brought her red 1987 944. It turns out that it is her first car and she is working on learning how to drive the stick shift. Her father, who drove a red Boxster, and brothers were with her, and we enjoyed talking about the 944s. We also have matching 944 hats and were able to get a photo together the next day at the car show. That night, we enjoyed a buffet dinner and the camaraderie of fellow Porsche enthusiasts from around the state. I enjoyed visiting with all of the tables and taking photographs. The raffle offered some amazing prizes from car care and cleaning products to two grand prizes for the Porsche Experience Center in Atlanta.
Sharing a passion for the 944 Congratulations to the lucky winners! On Sunday morning a number of Porsches lined up in a designated parking area for the Escape Car Show and were parked according to the classes. Porsche of Fort Myers provided two brand new Taycans for display. The judging for the show was laid back and went by PCA touring standards with allowances made for weather and travel at the discretion of the judges. The judges, led by Peter Olliviere, also considered the owner’s passion for their Porsche and involvement in the PCA. I was selected to be a judge and really enjoyed speaking to the owners and learned so much about their enthusiasm for their Porsches. Wow! I had a really difficult decision to make and had to consult with Peter for his advice. The highlight of the car show was two interesting presentations. The first one was by Shawn from Detail Garage in Ft. Myers. He demonstrated products and techniques for detailing your car using the Taycan provided by Porsche of Fort Myers. I found it helpful to learn that there is a certain technique when polishing the car. I wished he
could have used my 944 as the presentation demo! The second presentation was by Bobby Varela from Foreign Affairs Motorwerks in Pompano Beach. For me, the advice he presented was extremely valuable on what to look for when purchasing a preowned vehicle and how to negotiate price. I think it also would help someone who is considering selling their vehicle. Finally, the car show winners were announced, and the participants dispersed, some staying an extra night, some heading out for lunch together before driving home. The Escape was a terrific event. In these crazy pandemic times, the event name rang true: “escape” is what many of us needed and Cape Coral was the perfect place for a group of Porsche enthusiasts to enjoy a driving experience in order to get away and come together. Not only was the weather HOT, the Porsches were as well! . . . and so were the participants. :)

2021 Escape to the Cape Wrap up… Another year in the books for the annual PCA migration to the Southwest Florida Coast! Recapping the weekend events, those of us leaving from West Broward Porsche found a great group of volunteers. Waving everyone in was as Ed Blair; and nobody processes the PCA paperwork better than the amazing team of Dottie & Steve Kidd! Many shout outs to our leads and sweeps to accompany each group of 15 cars in having a safe and easy two-hour drive over to the Boathouse Tiki Bar Restaurant for lunch. The Boathouse (Kears Restaurant Group, owned by a three-car Porsche enthusiast), had the giant parking lot full of Porsches of all kinds. The lunch at the Boathouse had beautiful views of the Caloosahatchee River with two full-service bars, award winning cuisine, and live music. All while having some of the most stunning scenery in Southwest Florida... After checking into the wonderful Westin Hotel Cape Coral Resort at Marina Village, many of our PCA Florida regional members enjoyed poolside drinks and relaxed in the pool. That evening, in a large banquet hall adjacent to the hotel, dinner and a charity raffle were held. Regarding Covid issues, the entire banquet hall was used to make the room extremely spread out so there was no crowding at all. The dinner buffet featured prime rib, chicken, and shrimp; all served by staff behind a window of plexiglass. A brisk sale of raffle tickets was sold by the help of our president Peter Olliviere, Mike Koller, and me. Peter’s wife Laraine helped with ticket separation. The main event, the raffle, started around 8 p.m. P21s provided samples of their Concours-look Camauba wax for everyone. Griots Garage also got in on the giveaway action by providing samples of BF car wash as well. Raffle prizes included TouchUp RX, Lithium car care products, passes for PCA October DE event, Autogeeks Wolfgang Concours Kits,BadgeBar, Flashback Diner, Tap 42, Dr Colorchip, just to name just a few. Our entertaining MC of the night was provided by Peter. The highlight of the evening was the presentation of the very special THREE GRAND PRIZES donated by Fort Myers Porsche: Two Tickets to The Porsche Experience Center (PEC) in Atlanta, Georgia (2 Packages Awarded) Won by Jesse Singer and Robert Greene His and Hers Golf Porsche Golf Accessories Won by Bianka Steinfeldt Sunday morning, we headed to a gated lot for the car show adjacent to the hotel. Two tech sessions were held at the car show as well. First, Detail Garage of Fort Myers provided insight on detailing techniques. The second tech session featured our own Bobby Varela of Foreign Affairs Motorwerks (and a Kassette advertiser) who provided a talk on what to look for when buying a preowned vehicle. In addition, Porsche Ft. Myers brought along TWO brand new Taycans to show. Awards were also handed out to the winners of the car show. See photos attached for winners. Once again, a fun event had by all! We can’t wait to see you next year, Porsche family!

Autocross Update
Steve Kidd, Autocross Chair
While AX in South Florida generally comes to a halt during the hot summer, other areas of the country use this time to put their AX programs in high gear. This is especially true for the Porsche Parade, where AutoX is one of the premier events and spans two full days. This year the Porsche Parade was held in French Lick, Indiana during July 11-17 and the AutoX was July 14-15. This year’s Parade AX was again held at the French Lick Airport, the same location as Parade AX in 2015. At the Parade level, AX competition can be intense, especially in the Stock classes that continue to be the largest and most popular classes. This year was no exception, and I invite you to check out the Parade website to see great pictures of the AutoX event as well as results from both days of competition. [insert weblink here] Zone 12 was pretty well represented with most regions having at least one AutoX participant. Gold Coast Region had two AX entrants (Steve and Dottie Kidd) who both won 1st place trophies in their classes. The course was quite long, with most times being over 100 seconds. To compete at Parade level, competitors need to carefully read the rules, know the correct class and understand that an incorrect class or rule infraction could result in a protest and possible disqualification. Here are a few other differences that make the Parade AX different from local events. • Big name sponsors including Michelin Tires • Lots of classes and competition, including usually 200 to 300 participants • very structured and 987 volunteers to help • a pre-event class for anyone but geared to participants new to parade AX • A professional photographer on site to take lots of free pictures • An awards banquet to present trophies, give awards and chill with fellow competitors • Great trophies--see pictures! All parade trophies are ones you really want to show off. • So . . . who’s ready to try Parade-style AX next year in the Poconos? Stayed tuned for more 2022 AX info! To continue offering a world class AX program we need a new site. This could be a BIG parking lot, air strip or similar piece of pavement in the Tri-County area to hold our AutoX events. In the past we have used shopping center lots, sporting and gaming venues, and school/ government parking facilities. We most recently used the BBT Center parking lot, which was great: big, centrally located and reasonably priced. A repaving project put an end to that lot; we hope that the situation is temporary, but it very well could be permanent. What we need is an “in”—someone who has a connection to a suitable property and can help us get our foot in the door. Do you know of a site? Are you the person with the “in”? Please call me at 954- 292-3915 if you can help to find a new AX site. In 2020 all of our AX events were at Sebring in conjunction with Club Race or a regional DE. While this has proved doable, members have expressed a preference not to drive so far. Preferably, the site should be no more than a one-hour drive Tentative AX schedule for the remainder of 2021 Event # 4 10/09/2021 @ Sebring or ??? Event # 5 Tentative Mid November. Location TBA possibly PBIR cart track or ??? Event # 6 Tentative Early December. Location TBA; possibly FAU or ??? Event # ? Tentative: Possible “piggy back” on the Zonefest AX at Muscle Car City in Punta Gorda or another PCA club event. Most of the above dates & sites are subject to change due to weather, availability, and factors beyond our control. Watch for emails being sent out often. News, reminders. and 2021 updates: • Everyone is now required to pre-register for any AutoX on Clubregistration.net. Please consult the GCR website and Kassette for all Autocross photos & results. • Porsche classes are loosely based on the PCR’s for medium-size regions, with minor regional adjustments. The major difference will be the addition of SN (stock car/novice driver) for men and women. These classes are strictly for newcomers only. Please see Steve for any car class questions or if you wish to run as a novice. We reserve the right to make additional class/rule changes as needed. • Our 2021 series is planned to include 5 to 7 events, depending on site eligibility. To be eligible for an end-of-the year award, competitors must run in over half the events in the same class. Each competitor’s top finishes will be calculated and an end-of-the-year class champion and possibly runner-up (depending on class size) will be chosen. In case of a tie, additional events will be added until the tie is broken. Year-end class champion awards may be presented. • No passengers are allowed, except for an approved AX instructor driving or in the car instructing. • For 2021 please remember to be Covid-19 conscious. This means Covid waivers, social distancing, masks, and other appropriate safety protocols will be enforced. • Questions? call Steve or Dottie Kidd 954-946-3196 Oct 2021 | Die Porsche Kassette 23

Tech Corner :
It’s never been tracked!
Article by Pedro P. Bonilla, Tech Editor
If you’ve ever purchased a used Porsche or if you have perused the classifieds for a used Porsche, I’m sure you’ve seen how many of the seller’s state, with pride, and generally in bold letters, that: “this Porsche has never been tracked!” Every time I read that or hear it from a potential buyer of a car that I’ll be doing a Pre-Purchase Inspection (PPI) on, it saddens me. The way I see it, why buy a Porsche if you will never drive it the way the good Doctor Porsche intended it to be driven? If you’re purchasing a very valuable and collectible example of the marque, as an investment, only to be admired and one day sold for multiple times of what you bought it for, I understand. But to buy it and be afraid to drive it hard is absurd! Porsches are just one of a handful of cars that are meant for street and track use. I don’t mean that you have to be at every track day from every PCA Region and become a track junkie, but one of the greatest feelings in Porsche ownership is driving your car on the track and discovering its and your limits. It’s also good for them! We’ve come to realize that Porsches that are driven hard (not abused) tend to work better and have less issues ‘down the road’. Some people are concerned about getting a stone chip and cover the front end in blue tape, but it’s not that bad! The track is usually fairly clean. Many of the most used tracks around the country are well maintained and kept by a professional crew which does a great job. Furthermore, you can control who’s in front of you and how close. If you feel that you’re too close just let them get away and you’ll have plenty of clean, fresh air in front of you. Driving on the track is also quite safe! PCA does everything in its power to make it so. From the organization of the DE to the safety requirements which must be adhered to.

Within 30 days before you get to the track you need to take your Porsche to an authorized shop for a (complimentary) tech inspection to make sure that the tires, brakes, suspension and all safety equipment such as seat belts, windshield, etc. are in place and operational. Racetracks are designed for cars to travel at high speed. The surface is generally better than most roads, cars run in the same direction (most of the time), and there are no speeding tickets issued. At all PCA DE events there are professional corner workers present to warn you of any potential dangers ahead through the use of colored flags. And if you want to feel better protected, you can also purchase track insurance for your track day.
When you go to the track for the first time (and for a few more times after that) you are considered a novice driver and will have an assigned instructor riding in the car with you. The instructor is there to guide you by offering information and first-hand knowledge to make your track day safe and fun.
First you start at the classroom where the Chief Instructor will cover the bases and explain how the track day will go. After that, you go on-track! By attending a few Driver Education (DE) events you eventually can advance to a stage where you no longer need an in-car instructor, although you still keep learning. If you want to pursue it, eventually, you can also become an instructor yourself! I’ve been an HPDE instructor for many years and every time I do another track day I learn something new about me and/or my car. If your Porsche has lived its life strictly on the roads, it really hasn’t lived at all. So, what are you waiting for? Contact your local PCA Region and sign up for the next DE event. There’s nothing more enjoyable you can do with your Porsche. Having said all that, I always recommend to anyone wanting to start doing track days, that they should first participate in several autocrosses (AX). They are also a lot of fun!
The AX is generally run in second gear, so speed is manageable, but it tests the limits of your brakes and tire adhesion. You will learn to listen to your tires, which will tell you when they are reaching their limit. The same is true for your brakes. You will engage them and will quickly learn when the ABS is just about to kick in. By knowing these basics when you do your first DE you won’t be overwhelmed with too much information from your instructor which will make your track day a lot more fun and safer. Not sure if these cars can really take the hard driving? I’ll just use my car as an example. It’s a 1998 2.5L Boxster. I started doing DE events as soon as the car finished the break in-period by the Summer of ’98 in St. Louis where I was living at the time. Since then, to date it now just reached 300,000 miles on the odometer and of those, close to 15,000 miles are on the track.
An AX is a timed event, in a closed-access track, usually on a large, not used parking lot, at an unused airport, or other tarmac where a short course is laid out using bright colored cones. One lap at the AX is generally around 60 seconds and it’s just one car at-a-time, on track.
I’ve tracked it at Gateway International, Road America, Bristol Motor Speedway, Homestead-Miami Speedway, Palm Beach International (Moroso), Daytona International Speedway, Roebling Road, Road Atlanta, and at my home track and favorite of all, Sebring International Speedway. Hope to see you at the AX and track soon! For more information on HPDE and more, please visit my website: www PedrosGarage.com. The advantage of first running AX courses is that it helps you learn many of the basics that you will need at the track. You will learn exactly where your tires are because you need to come very close to the cones without touching them. This will help you to perfectly make your apexes at the track.

PCA Gold Coast – Member Profiles Mark Johnson, staff writer We continue this month with our member feature by presenting two PCA Gold Coast members. Get to know these wonderful Porsche owners! This month we feature Jay Weigle and Ruben Fuentes. Jay Weigle, his wife Haley, and daughter Millie James (MJ) live in Dania Beach, FL. Jay is a long-term member of PCA and has been involved with multiple events within our club over the years. His current Porsche is a 2010 Boxster S, which is in bone stock condition. The Boxster is the fifth Porsche he has owned, having acquired the S about five years ago. Leading into the current Boxster, Jay has also owned two 944 NAs, and 2 “hot” 944 Turbos. All told, Jay has been driving and enjoying PCars since 1993 when he acquired the first 994 at the seasoned age of 14, a full two months before he turned 15! He has jockeyed a Porsche around almost every year since. Having a cabriolet, the Boxster S in silver, makes it fun and easy to use the vehicle on date nights and weekends. Jay also enjoys driving this machine in High Performance Driver Education (HDPE) events to improve his skills and confidence. The game plan is to participate in future Porsche Rallies, PCA travel events, and perhaps a Porsche Parade or Werks Reunion. He and the family are also considering the next 48 Hours of Porsche for early 2022, and a Rennsport event or several others. Options are open as we all move back to a bit more normalcy in life. Porsches and Pancakes have returned so you may also visit with Jay at the Flashback Diner (Davie location) at a future first Saturday of the month.
When not driving the Boxster, Jay is employed by the US Health Group in health insurance sales. He has been with the company for four years joining US Health after selling his insurance agency in Augusta, GA. He was born Augusta and has lived throughout the southeast. He has generally always returned to his birth city and the home of the Masters Golf Tournament. Even after graduating from Clemson University with a major in Marketing, and a minor in Economics, Augusta called him back. Jay eventually made the move to Florida in 2017. One of Jay’s memorable Porsche-related experiences was a visit to the Porsche Experience Center in Atlanta. The trip was taken in 2017 and during the experience he drove the 718 S. “It was a blast,” says Jay. While at the PEC, he also participated in driving the Porsche 919 Hybrid in the simulator room. He selected Road Atlanta as the course and the Porsche 919 Hybrid, a LMP1 class racecar, as the vehicle. With Jay’s HDPE skill and experience he placed 11th out of a few thousand people. That is quite an accomplishment given the challenge of sim racing! The other highly significant Porscherelated event for the Weigles occurred nearly five years ago, and it was an absolute game-changer for both Haley and Jay. On November 5, 2016, they celebrated their engagement with a photo shoot on the track at Road Atlanta! They made a request to the folks at Road Atlanta to hold a photo event at the track to celebrate their betrothal. The Atlanta track team was impressed. It was a highly unique opportunity as they were the only couple to ever ask for such an accommodation. Needless to say, Haley and Jay were shocked and thrilled when the Road Atlanta management team said yes! Haley said “YES” as well! Jay is no stranger to Road Atlanta, as he has been attending the Petite Le Mans racing at the track since its inception in 1998.

Haley & Jay at Road Atlanta for their engagement, as great a place for a very important question. Jay specifically remembers when Don Panoz bought and created the American Le Mans Series and moved it to both Road ATL and Sebring. While he may have missed a couple, he has been to most every Petite weekend since the start of the event. During his wild collegiate days, Jay and some buddies were at the track and noted some “over-served” fans driving a golf cart on the track. Not to be outdone, they dared a friend to strip naked and take his moped on the track, and do a lap . . . HE DID! The friend, upon returning to great applause and laughter, discovered that his clothes were missing. Great times, probably never to be repeated. Jay and Haley have been married four years. They recently added to the family with daughter MJ, who is eight months old. In this respect, there is a significant need for a Porsche with rear seats! The 2-seat Boxster doesn’t quite have the family capacity they currently need. Hence, as Jay suggests: “If someone has a hot modern 911 for sale, I’m interested! I’m looking for a ‘sporting’ build out, and a SKITTLES color if possible.” Jay also noted that car prices are borderline crazy:yep – agreed. Apparently, the young Ms. MJ Weigle is already a fan of Porsche, with an appreciation for the style, performance and especially the lateral G’s! The passenger seat of a Boxster S can do that to a person. As for a favorite Porsche model, Jay goes with the Carrera GT! The GT has the Porsche reliability and capability but with a screaming mid-engine V10! “What a Car!”
Ruben Fuentes, our second member this month, is a Miami Shores resident. Ruben was born in Puerto Rico and landed in Miami in 1974. With a college degree in the hospitality industry he worked for three distinct high-end resorts as Convention Manager, and later as Director of Conventions, totaling thirty years’ experience. He also became a meeting planner at the University of Miami, organizing educational conferences, and was part of the team that opened the Knight Center in downtown Miami in 1982, which is part of UM. Señor Fuentes retired in 2013 and is now living the dream with his hobbies: cycling, his classic Porsche, two classic Ford Mustangs, and a bit of landscaping. Ruben enjoys being active and getting his hands dirty! Ruben has a daughter, Natalie Pizarro, who lives with husband, Erik, and their four-year-old Ana Sofia in West Kendall. His Porsche is a 1994 RS America, and he drives it! He acquired the car from a friend who had purchased the vehicle new from the Ft. Lauderdale dealership. His buddy was told by the dealer salesperson: “A brand new 911 is going to cost about $65,000. However, I still have a cheaper version in the showroom and if you don’t put the emblems on the car no one is going to know it is the less expensive version.” Who knew, salespersons selling features and value? Not only that, the values of the limited production run of RS America makes the car incredibly sought after. Ruben’s friend kept the car for five years and 14,000 miles and was ready to trade it to the dealership for a new Boxster. Ruben bought the car rather than giving it to the dealer. That was 21 years ago. The ’94 RSA is Midnight Metallic Blue and one of 17 in that color of the total of 84 RSA’s built in 1994. Through the ’93 and ’94 model years a total of 701 RS models were constructed. As a 1994 year model, Ruben’s Porsche has two small seats in the rear, and the VIN includes “RS” embedded in the 17 alphanumeric ID number. Ruben made two modifications to his RS: an exhaust system enhancement and a performance chip addition. Driving the RS America, Ruben has been involved with multiple PCA events, and other related Porsche specialty groups. He is frequently enjoying the PCar camaraderie with the Miami Vintage Vices guys, and the PCar Illuminati, a
Broward County Porsche group of beer drinkin’ buddies. Beyond these fellowships, there are weekly Cars & Coffee meets, multiple breakfast and lunch drives, and several charitable events. According to Ruben, the awesome Porsche cars have helped create many new friendships. And this is of course a testament to “It’s Not Just the Cars, It’s the People” mantra of PCA. A couple of years ago Ruben began setting up a few “Ruben’s Runs.” While not official PCA-sanctioned drives, he found that his RSA had its tail wagging after a cars/coffee event, or some other static meet. The car wanted to get out and get moving. After all, a Porsche is certainly not a couch/garage potato. Hence, Ruben began setting up these drives to exercise his and other friends’ Porsche vehicles. Now called “Ruben’s A&W Runs” the events involve a spirited drive to a location or two within a couple of hours drive of Miami-Ft. Lauderdale. They collect anywhere from 10 or 15 to over 30 cars and drivers/passengers per drive. As Ruben explains, “The cars need to be run and we’re the guys who do just that!”
and bought a road bike to celebrate his 65th birthday in 2013. Since then, he has been heavily involved with the Everglades Bicycle Club. He is a ride marshal for the Dolphins Challenge Cancer Event benefitting the UM Sylvester Cancer Center. Ruben also participates in the MS Challenge, Fighting Diabetes Cycling, and the Florida Tour de Force. The Florida Tour is a five-day ride from North Miami Beach to Daytona Beach Shores. Funds raised by this charity ride go to support the families of fallen law enforcement officers.
Ruben Fuentes and his other “ride”, biking is a true passion for this Porsche guy. Ruben and his ’94 RSA at a recent A&W Run to Schenbly Redland’s Winery & Brewery in Homestead Along with the Porsche ’94 RSA, he also owns a couple of Ford Mustangs, both 1967 convertibles. The first one was acquired in 1975. These classic Fords have been used in a multitude of photo shoots, music videos, and special events. Kurt Russell drove one of these Mustangs for his characters’ part in the movie “The Mean Season.” Several of Ruben’s friends lament him missing either a Porsche or Mustang event, so he suggests he’s really a “Porschtang” guy, and can’t be in two places at once. Beyond a love for cars, Ruben in also involved with a passion for bicycling, or cycling. He started on two wheels in 2010
As for dream Porsches, Ruben suggests there are two for him, either a 993 GT2 or a 964 Turbo. Given his 21-year enjoyment of the RS America, we are not surprised that these air-cooled Porsche models would be in Ruben’s dream garage! Look for Jay Weigle and Ruben Fuentes when you are out and about with your PCar. You’ll enjoy their stories, their car(s), and their “it’s the people” personalities.

PHOTO FINISH Christy Spangler, Photo Editor
ZOOM ZOOM This month’s photo was submitted by Rafael Alvarez who went out almost every day for a sunset drive and some fresh air in his 2019 Targa 4S during the Covid19 lockdowns. On one of his drives, Rafael strapped a GoPro to the back left panel with a suction cap and angled it so the Targa logo was visible. He set the time-lapse for 10 sec intervals and off he went. This image has that nice twilight lighting, balanced by the way the headlights light up the road ahead. It really captures the motion and feeling of zooming along in a Porsche. Rafael’s Targa is GT Silver Metallic with black leather interior with just over 19,000 miles on it. He has never driven a car 100,000 miles before, and says “With leases etc. you usually swap out cars with low millage.” This one he plans to keep and is fixated on driving it at least 100,000 miles. “To me Porsche is PLEASURE. (Lockdown Medication)” says Rafael. Rafael used a Go-PRO Hero 4 to capture this unedited photo. The Photo of the Month submissions have been exceptional, please continue to send your photos using the guidelines below. Submit your photo to Die Porsche Kassette Photo Finish!
