President’s Corner Ed Kohly- President
As we roll past one of the hottest summer months we have had in the last few years, I am looking forward to seeing a lot more sunshine and cooler weather as we wrap up 2016. We are back with an action packed calendar of events so keep a look out for our emails and look at our Kassette newsletter for more information as we prepare our calendar of events for 2017. Did you know our Gold Coast Region is 5th in North America for actual growth of members so far this year? This is exciting news and I’m hoping we finish out the rest of the year strong with growth of our members to over 2,500 in our region. It would be great to move up to the number #1 position in North America; do you think that is possible? I do. If you have friends who have a Porsche and are not members, please share with them your experience as a member of our region. Remember this is your club, so let’s make it the best. It’s almost time to vote for your 2017 Directors. We are all volunteers who care about the direction of our PCA-GCR club and we work very hard throughout the year as a team to continue making our/ your club the best as possible. I am askTHE FOLLOWING OFFICERS & DIRECTORS WILL SERVE FOR 2017 President: Past President: Treasurer: Secretary: Director: Director:
Dan Doyle Ed Kohly Kyle Rathbun Bob Varela Steve Kidd 2016/17 Pedro Bonilla 2016/17
The final slate of candidates includes names that were suggested by the nominating committee as well as members that were nominated from the floor at our last board meeting in August.
THE FOLLOWING IS THE FINAL SLATE OF CANDIDATES FOR 2017-18 Vice President: Stuart Jarkowski Vice President: Paul Raben Director: Roger Fabel Director: Howard Jacobs Director: Dottie Kidd Director: Jake Kooser Director: Peter Olliviere Director: Bobby Varela The Vice President candidate with the highest votes will become the new Vice President. The two remaining Director positions need to be voted by YOU. The two Directors with the highest votes will take office for the next 2 years, while the 3rd and the 4th highest votes become the Alternate Director and Alternate Director in Reserve for 1 year, respectively. After the voting and tallying, the new elected Directors will be announced at the Holiday Party and in the January Issue of the Kassette. You will find the BIOs of the candidates starting on page 32. Please understand that these are volunteer positions and can at times be both rewarding, time consuming, and stressful. I would ask everyone to put yourselves in the shoes of these dedicated members and try to imagine the work that goes into planning events, running activities, follow up after a function and everything else associated with what a GCR volunteer must do in order to have their activity run smoothly, be well attended, and enjoyed by all. We have streamlined our voting process and it can be viewed online, the link will be emailed out to all of our members. Notice, I wrote all members, this includes both primary and associate members who are in good standings with their PCA membership as of September 30th, 2016.

Voting will be open from October 15th to November 15th. If you have had a chance to attend any of our events this year or previous events, think back on your experience with each of the candidates and vote for those you feel would best represent the future of Gold Coast Region for the 2017 team. I want to thank all of those who served in the past and those who currently have expressed their willingness to serve in coming years. is a very special number to Porsche enthusiasts. This month our cover artwork and article provided by photojournalist, Alberto Pugliese pays tribute to this legendary racing machine. Included with the article is a photo that I took of the 917 Porsche that won Le Mans in 1971. You never know how important your photographs will be. If you would like to submit high quality photographs of a PCA event for possible submission in our magazine, please contact me for more details. Also if you would like to submit an article that would be of interest to our readers, please contact me. Articles from the members are always welcome.

One of our members , Felicitas Oefelein has been providing articles. Check out her article about a very special car show in Germany and her new Porsche tractor. Our Drivers Education program had a very successful First Time Drivers event for first time DE students. The event received very high marks and a future event is already being planned. Check out the photos and reviews from the students. We had so many great comments that we ran out of space. Please check out the full article in the DE section of our web site for more reviews. If you have never participated in our DE program it is a very safe way to learn higher speed driving

skills on a race track. This is not a racing school. If you have never driven your car on a track, I would recommend that you start with our autocross program first. You will be taught driving skills but at a much slower speed. Skills learned in autocross and drivers education will improve your performance and safety on the track and on the highway. We have many great events that will be published next month. Check out the Oktoberfest flyer below and sign up on clubregistration.net. Our 2017 slate of candidates and bios are listed this month for your review. Enjoy your Porsche, Roger

A Tribute to the Porsche 917 by Photojournalist, Alberto Pugliese
T
his month’s Kassette cover is a tribute to the mighty Porsche 917. Countless books and articles have been written about the 917, clearly one of the most iconic racecars from the golden era of racing. Many PCA club members of today were growing up when the 917 was scoring victories and achieving groundbreaking performance. Especially in the stunning Gulf and Martini liveries, the 917 has become one of the most recognized and evocative racing symbols and it is engrained in the subconscious of car enthusiasts even more than 40 years from its heyday. Designed to compete in endurance racing, the natural environment for the 917 is the Circuit de La Sarthe, the home of the famed 24 Hours of Le Mans race. It is a timely coincidence that the Kassette is featuring the 917 in the July issue, right after the 2016 Le Mans race. The 917 was powered by 4.5, 4.9 or 5.0 liters variants of the flat-12 engine. Power ranged from over 500 to 1,100 HP. Upon its debut in 1969, the 917 was tremendously fast but very unstable at high speeds, even on a straight line. While we now understand well the importance of proper aerodynamic design for achieving down-force and high-speed stability, this knowledge was very limited back then. With its high speed instability the 917 was so frightening that a driver competing in the 24 Hours of Le Mans is rumored to have deliberately blown up the engine to avoid racing it. Sadly, John Woolfe, a British gentleman driver, was killed in 1969 when it lost control during the first lap of the Le Mans race. Further aerodynamic development by the John Wyer team led to a reshaped tail section that improved the car’s behavior and transformed it in an unbeatable track weapon. This modified version became known as the 917K (Kurzheck, or “short tail”; the Porsche Museum calls it “KH”). Over time additional versions were built, including long tail versions with even greater

aerodynamic performance, yet the 917K was the version that achieved the greatest success on the racetrack. Certainly the crown jewel victories are those at Le Mans in 1970 and 1971, against the 917’s main rival, the Ferrari 512s. Hans Hermann and Richard Atwood won in 1970 driving the Porsche Salzburg 917K. Studio-like image of the 1970 Le Mans Winner, as displayed at the Porsche Museum in 2015.
Helmut Marko and Gijs Van Lennep won in 1971, this time driving a further updated 917K (TA version, with a lighter magnesium tubeframe chassis). This Martini-liveried car also set an overall distance record that stood until 2010 and still holds the fastest lap at Le Mans, albeit the circuit has been modified afterwards and most notably it has been slowed by the addition of two chicanes on the Mulsanne straight in 1990.
Studio-like image of the 1971 Le Mans Winner, photographed at Rennsport Reunion III in 2007.
This issue’s cover is the result of me fiddling with a couple of pictures taken in 2011, at Laguna Seca, during Rennsport Reunion IV. Photoshop is a wonderful tool to exercise one’s creativity and create artsy images. The first step was combining two pictures into one, placing the two cars side by side. The image suggests close racing and an imminent pass. The cars were travelling at a high rate of speed as the shots were taken at the end of the main straight, prior to the braking for the Andretti hairpin, traveling at approximately 130 mph). I did this shortly after Rennsport but nothing further happened to this image until a few weeks ago. Creativity is a non-linear process, and looking at this image once more I found some additional inspiration. I wanted to create an image that further emphasized the raw speed of the 917, so I added some distortion and blurring to the tails of the cars. Perhaps this is not too much of an exaggeration considering that in the 1970s the 917 reached 224 mph on the Mulsanne straight. Moreover, the 917/30 was capable of 240 mph in the Can-Am series. The cars pictured on the cover are well known 917s. Chris McAllister, a historic racecar collector, is the driver of the Gulf car, 917-016. You can watch a 49 minutes in-car videos of this 917 driven at Rennsport IV (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QRPy785nGY); back in 1970 917-016 won races at Brands Hatch, Monza and Watkins Glen, driven by Leo Kinnunen and the late Pedro Rodriguez; he was a great champion who would sadly perish a year later in a racing accident while driving a Ferrari 512s. Some PCA members may remember seeing the yellow
car in the cover, 917-021, while being worked on by our friends at Gunnar Racing, during a club visit in 2012. Driven in the picture by Van Lennep, he had also raced it at Le Mans in 1970 retired after two crashes caused by rain and a punctured tire. As a testament to the immense power and speed of the 917, over 10 years after its racing debut (in 1981) Derek Bell drove 917-021 at Silverstone and set a track record. Porsche 917 Tribute
continued
.
r
Now owned by the Collier Museum/Revs Institute in Naples, 917-019 was never restored and still shows battle scars in his beautiful martini livery. Here is it shown in action at Brian Redman’s 2010 Targa 66 event held at Palm Beach International Raceway. I wrote this article while watching the 2016 24 Hours of Le Mans. Since the introduction of the 919 Hybrid, Porsche has been competing again in the top class for overall victory. The 919 Hybrid has just won the race, even though Toyota was in the lead until the car failed with one lap to go. With its maiden victory in 2015, Porsche has now scored 18 overall Le Mans victories and the 919 has matched the 917 with two victories each. The 919 may well be on its way to become another Porsche icon, but I am not sure it can match the essential beauty and rawness of the mighty 917. Hopefully our PCA younger members will read more about the 917 and continue to cherish its history and achievements. It is a fascinating tale of men and machines.

First Time Only DE Event Over the years I have spoken to a lot of PCA members who have never driven their Porsches on the track. I see the excitement in their eyes as I explain how a DE works, all of the safety procedures that are in place, that there is a class on high performance driving fundamentals and that they will have a National PCA Instructor assigned to them for the entire day. I knew there were a lot of PCA members who had always thought of attending a DE but had concerns or reservations and would need a little guidance to get them started. So I set out to create a special event just for First Time Only students. I wanted them to feel comfortable knowing that everyone there was a first time student. I wanted them to experience the fun people and fantastic instructors. I knew they would have a blast. The event was a total success. Everyone had a lot of High Speed Fun and met a lot of great people. I want personally thank all of the instructors who supported this event and all DE’s. Your fun spirit, energy and experience is what makes the Gold Coast PCA DE Program what it is and I can’t thank you enough. Enjoy the following comments from our

“First Time Only DE” students. Had an absolute blast on Saturday. Thank you for putting it together. It was so good to get to meet so many other Porsche enthusiasts, all of whom were friendly and keen to help and offer advice to us beginners. Ian This is my first time participating in a DE experience. It was a memorable one. I was lucky to have Fred as my instructor, besides being my friend, he showed tremendous knowledge and did a great job in explaining the physics of the car, how to flow on the track. I highly recommend this training to any aficionado interested in learning to drive safely on the roads and the track, to properly use the power of the car, and ultimately to have lots of fun. I am looking forward to the next time. Alberto I want to thank you so much for organizing the event. It exceeded my wildest expectations! I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and was smiling for hours afterwards. It was invaluable having an amazing instructor sitting beside me, giving instant feedback and instructions. Also, it was rewarding seeing my progress between each session. I would highly recommend this program to anyone! I’m now hooked and can’t wait for

the next DE event. I would also like to thank my instructor Robert for his patience and expertise. Evan Great event at our local raceway. Wellcoordinated, timely scheduling, friendly staff and a wonderful catered dinner! An enjoyable outing at the track - wet and dry, L0L. We really enjoyed the day. George and Lois Thank you for this past weekend experience during the first time DE. Besides having a great time, I got to meet some new PCA members. The entire venue was very well organized with the utmost professionalism of the entire staff that made this event a success. In addition, thanks to you personally for your communications and promptness during the entire process. My experience will be cherished for a lifetime and I look forward to attending future events of the Gold Coast PCA. Larry Bloomfield What an awesome day. I lucked out and had a great instructor, Danny. Loved him and his family. He even took me out in his car. What a blast!! Max
First and foremost, I want to thank you for the invite, especially for what you and your crew did for my brother in law, for a 22-year-old guy to be able to have that experience, I think you made a lifetime fan. He is already investigating how to purchase an inexpensive Boxster so he can join and race himself. For myself, I am interested in learning what it takes to become an instructor. What type of time commitment and what is the process? Marc I thought the event was great. I liked the strictness of PCA. Had my vehicle inspected under the hood, trunk, tire pressure and by Ernie Bello. Other groups simply take the word of the driver regarding having their car inspected by a reputable mechanic. Fred Kohly was my instructor and he helped me become more comfortable with my car and the track. (How could I NOT learn from Fred? He has been doing this for years!!). I thought we had ample track time. I thought the other drivers were respectful and courteous towards the less-experienced drivers. I liked the conversations during lunch between the drivers and instructors. (Food
was good too.) Jamie After being a PCA member for 1-1/2 years, finally I am participating in a DE event. Robert, my instructor was absolutely STELLAR. His expert training has allowed me to have the time of my life. THANKS ROBERT! CAN’T WAIT UNTIL SEBRING! It definitely is not the cars BUT the people! Ralph The event was well organized and a great experience for any first timer. My instructor (Jeromy) was absolutely fantastic. A great person and knowledgeable instructor. You can’t really describe to people, the feeling of being able to open up your car without having to worry about police radar. It’s exhilarating to say the least. All the participants that I met, from the first timers to the organizers, were warm and friendly. I would love to continue participating in these events. I really had a great time and truly appreciate the opportunity to have participated. Bob Thank you very much for this fantastic event. I had a blast and will sign up for upcoming DE events in Sebring and Homestead. I ordered already my new brakes :) DE shows you firsthand what

these cars are made (and capable) of. It’s the ultimate experience for every Porsche owner. Pros: Very well organized, not to crowded, great instructor (Bert), track in great condition. Most important I felt very safe on every session. Cons: Can’t think of one. Can’t wait to move up to the blue team soon. Edwin While my brother and I were probably the youngest participants, I think we certainly held our own. We learned so much from our wonderful instructors, his was more technical while mine was very calming, perfectly catered to each of our needs. It was such a blast, driving our dad’s Porsche to its full potential, man was he jealous! We both have become so much more confident in our driving capabilities, on and off the track. Even if we never end up racing, I think this experience has provided invaluable knowledge. Hope to have another chance at it. Thanks again for everything! A VISIT TO THE TECHNO CLASSICA ESSEN by Felicitas Oefelein Spring is in the air, and it is time for a visit home to celebrate my dad Georgs 83rd birthday. April-May is my favorite time of the year to visit. It’s white asparagus season in our region and also time for a number of fun car events. A few years back we went to the PORSCHE TREFFEN in Dinslaken which is held each year
on May 1st and this year I am planning to attend the TECHNO CLASSICA CAR SHOW in Essen. My dad, who visits each year and our neighbor Armin Stiler are both car nuts, and both have told me great stories about it. I cannot wait to see this thing with my own eyes. THE TECHNO CLASSICA is the largest vintage car show in the world, with 1,250 exhibitors and this year almost 200,000 visitors. It covers and area of about

1,300,669.250400. squarefeet LOL!!!! I converted this on the internet. It really told me it would be 120,000 square meters. You do the math. I am trying to bring the point across that I was absolutely and completely blown away by the sheer enormity of this affair. The NY car-show at the Jacob Javits center can absolutely go and hide inside this production. For sale this year were about 2500 Vehicles from as far away as the South America and China. We spent an entire day there and I feel we only scratched the surface. The number of Porsches on display completely blew me away. If there was a part I had a need for, any part really, this would be the place to come and purchase it. In addition to cars for sale, one could purchase just about any car part, fun stuff such as grill badges, tools, posters and books, accessories, vintage items, signed and autographed collectibles and more. Car clubs had their own special areas. There were food vendors and more. Having raved enough about the greatness about the TECHNO CLASSICA I have to now tell you about the absolute sexist treatment I received from some of the vendors at this joint. Upon entering the show It was immediately clear that this was a completely male dominated affair. I’d estimate the ratio of male to female at about 25 to one! Now I’m pretty much used to being in the minority from attending DE track events over the years so this was not anything new. I was also in the market for a classic radio for my 1968 Porsche 912 “Big Bird”…. So we approached a few of the vendors that specialized in radios. I learned that the appropriate model would be the Blaupunkt one with black knobs, and that the cost would be approximately 350 Euros, it could even be outfitted with a Bluetooth add on so I could use my I phone to play music wireless on it. Not bad. The second vendor I asked completely refused to talk to me personally and even though I asked him the questions he then directed his answers to my
Kassette |

neighbor Armin as if I were completely non existent… That did not sit so well with me and after the second or third time I simply asked him why he was talking to “ that guy” over there when he had a “ customer over here” wanting a radio. He was pretty surprised as evidently he was not aware of his sketchy behavior. Let’s just say I did not buy a radio from him… The absolute winner of the day though was the gentleman at a booth who offered me a pair of black microfiber gloves out of the blue… When I asked him why he thought I would need those gloves (I had shown zero interest in them) he told me they would be awesome for me I polishing my dads car! He pointed at Armin who is only a few years older than me! That loser managed to insult both of us in one clean stroke. This time I let him have it and called him a sexist pig. I asked him why it was so hard to imagine that a woman was at this show out of her own free will, shopping for car parts for her own vehicles.. he got smaller and smaller. I had enough. I was baffled. True I had been in the United Stated for over 20 years but what was wrong with my fellow German countrymen? I thought Germany was a modern country, Hello, we have Angela leading the flock, did they not get the memo I wondered? Anyways, back to more fun stuff… When we first got to the show I had jokingly remarked that both dad and Armin should better not let me come home with a Fiat 500. I had always had a soft spot in my heart for those little Italians. Well I was warned I that they might be out of my price range by now. We saw one in mint green that was offered for 20,000 Euro. I was quite shocked. Last time I looked they were about half of that. What did catch my eye though was a very handsome red Porsche Diesel Traktor… “here we go again” those that know me will think. The Traktor was priced at around 10,000 Euro and seemed a real bargain in comparison. In my opinion anything with a Porsche logo on it that is made in the 50s or 60s and moves and can be had for this amount of money deserves consideration. True, 15 HP is not a lot, but I have to say it was quite handsome…Plus the Porsche
“Rednose” as the Traktors are lovingly called by their fans are what saved the company from ruin after the second World War. About 120,000 were built. So I did a little research and remembered that a couple years back we visited a friend of a friend to tour his little collection of vintage Porsches. Hans Peter Bongards ownes a jewel of a Standard Traktor and back then he gave me a ride through his little neighborhood, which was very well received by anyone we encountered. He also let me test-drive his classic 911 Targa and shortly afterwards I purchased my own 1968 912 . Memo to myself:
shoes, which were several sizes too large. Mine were high heels. I was sweating bullets back then as well… If only he knew. I move the Standard in and out and am having the time of my life. Did you know that you can brake each wheel independently and this way the Rednose can spin around its own axis. It’s a good After I returned to New York my dad visited the Dinslaken Porsche Treffen on May first. This is traditionally also a big gathering of the local Diesel Club (AKA Traktor crowd) When I spoke to my dad on the phone a miracle had happened and he was now on board and seemed downright enthusiastic about the purchase of a farm machine. He had even measured our little recycling shed and told me the vehicle could be housed there if he added on to it. GO DAD! I was not lazy either! I joined the various facebook Porsche Diesel groups in Germany and you would not believe the many
Visits to Hans Peter can be very dangerous financially. A few days later Armin and I are on our way. It’s a good thing Hans Peter has a new lawn in his backyard and I am only allowed to move his Standard model in and out of the garage. I truly cannot believe the trust this man has in me and my abilities. About 2 feet in front of the Rednose is a perfectly restored BMW Isetta. One wrong move and I could squash that beauty like a bug…Thankfully I don’t. I remember that a few years ago I drove his 911 Targa on the Autobahn in Wilson’s
thing the lawn is new or we would be there for hours.. After the action in the garage we have a few drinks and exchange fun car stories, then I spend the rest of the trip trying to convince my dad what a fantastic idea it would be to add a Traktor to the collection. Dad has other worries. He owns a BMW 503 that needs to be restored from ground up. At the Techno Classica we saw a beautifully restored model that sold for a record sum. Only 139 convertibles were built and as prices for this car climb so do restoration costs…I wonder why… LOL But back to the red dream machine. After further research I have identified my ideal Traktor to be the Junior S model. The Junior being the smallest model and the S being the skinny version, built for vineyards and fruit plantations. With a width of only about 1 Meter it is quite skinny, it is also quite rare and sought after.
messages I am receiving these days from ruddy-cheeked German farmers showing off their fancy Porsche Traktors via email! Usually I visit Germany twice a year and the second trip happens around September. I promise to keep you posted and will let you know what happens to my dream of owning a very slow and very noisy classic Porsche Diesel. Until then I hope to see you at the track this summer.

Autocross Update
A
s many of you know, GCR had a very successful “first half” autocross season. As we move toward cooler months, GCR will pick up the pace with lots of AX action, not only GCR events, but also events run in conjunction with other PCA regions and events hosted by Zone 12. Since our last article, there was some really good autocross competition on both the Zone and National level. Zonefest, held over Memorial Day weekend, provided some excellent rivalry at the Sebring Skid Pad, with about 80 competitors from 8 different PCA regions. Check the Zone 12 website for results and which regions had the honor of men’s and ladies FTD. The Porsche Parade at Jay Peak Vermont provided a higher level of competition and, as expected, Zone 12 Autocrossers really did well. Check out the result on the 2016 PCA Parade website, autocross tab to see how our group stacked up against some really good national level competition. The airport course at parade was very technical and the faster cars often “over drove” the course….case in point my 944s2 had the fastest production car time, beating cars like GT3’s and Turbo S’s….some of the reason being they over braked in the turn arounds, and other places, while I (with a much slower car) carried more momentum and a better line exiting each turn. Want to learn more of the inner secrets….All of our Autocrosses offer patient & experienced instructors so come on out and join the fun. Additionally, a special 1st timer’s only AX clinic will be offered at our Sept. 17 AutoX. This will be limited to 10 students and start before the regular Autocross gets underway.
Moving into October (10/22 & 23), your AX team is planning a 2 day autocross, run under the Zone 12 banner, at the Oktoberfast club race. We expect this to run similarly to the 48 hours at Sebring Club Race AX, complete with trophies if you participate both days and win your class. This also gives you an opportunity to see PCA racing at its best on the track at Daytona. Join the fun! Now some bad news… BBT will be raising lot rental fees significantly in 2017.We may need to do less events at BBT and/or raise the price for events at BBT. Also expect a much heftier price if you wait till the last week to register for one of our autocrosses and longer drives to different sites.
by Steve Kidd, Autocross Chair Here’s our proposed schedule for the 2nd part of 2016, which is subject to change: Saturday Sept. 17 at the “concrete strip” in Sebring …Registration is open now on club registration… also prior to the AutoX, there will be a autoX mini-school from 8:0010:00 This will be geared toward 1st timers, limited to 10 students and have a separate registration. If that wasn’t enough, Suncoast region will be having an AutoX the next day…Sunday 9/18, with registration also on Club registration we’ll be having a Saturday Feb.6th at Sebring Skid Pad (in Conjunction with Club Race. Registration is open now on club registration) Sunday October 16th at BB&T Center in Sunrise Sunday November 6th at BB&T Center in Sunrise. Our Season finale and annual PCA Ladies go free day (must drive a Porsche and be a PCA member or member associate to go free) Zone 12 Event Saturday AND Sunday, October 22 & 23 in conjunction with the Oktoberfast club race 2016 at Daytona. This will be a 2 day zone challenge event run at the Daytona kart track. Registration is open now on club registration. We anticipate trophies for class winners that run both days. News, reminders and 2016 updates: • Everyone is now required to pre register for any AutoX on Clubregistration.net… Please consult the GCR or Zone 12 website and Kassette for all Autocross photos & results. • Porsche classes are loosely based on the PCR’s for medium size regions, with minor regional adjustments. The major difference will be the addition of SN (stock car/novice driver) for men and ladies. These classes are strictly for newcomers only. Please see Steve for any car class questions or if you wish to run as a novice. We reserve the right to make additional class/rule changes as needed. • Our 2016 series is planned to be 7 events. To be eligible for an end of the year award, competitors must run in at least 4 events in the same class. Each competitor’s top 4 finishes will be calculated and an end of the year class champion and possibly runner-up (depending on class size) will be chosen. In case of a tie, additional events will be added until the tie is broken. Year end class champion awards will be presented. • Cheers! Hope to see you at one of our late season Autocrosses • Questions…..call Steve or Dottie Kidd 954 946-3196

Tech Corner : Better than OEM Article by Pedro P. Bonilla, Tech Editor
We’ve all been told that you need to ONLY use Porsche (OEM) parts when replacing anything in your car. For the most part that is great advise .... but not always! Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) parts are specifically designed for a particular car by the factory to assure maximum performance and value, so, as a rule of thumb, it is good advise to only use OEM as replacement parts on your Porsche. If your car is a Concour D’Elegance entry you should only use OEM and specific to your model and model year, otherwise the Judges will penalize you. But there are some areas where the aftermarket products have surpassed the OEM parts. Windshield Wipers is one of them. Except for the newest models, where the factory is catching up with the new materials and designs, the windshield wipers had not changed much throughout their history, which, as a side story, date back to 1903 when they were patented by Mary Anderson, from Birmingham, AL as a manually operated rubber blade-againstthe-windshield contraption. It wasn’t till 1922 when Cadillac made windshield wipers standard on their vehicles. Windshield Wipers are wear items, just like brakes and tires and need to be replaced on a regular basis, generally when doing scheduled maintenance on the car. Depending on the type of wipers (material), their use and general (weather) conditions they will wear differently. As soon as you start to not see clearly through your windshield during rain or other inclement weather, they should be replaced. But, now that you’re aware of the aftermarket wipers, which ones should you install?
28
Die Porsche
Because they are much lower profile that the bracket type they remain clear of buildup. They also have an airfoil design that pushes the blade harder against the windshield as speed increases.
Keep in mind that our cars have different windshield sizes and curvatures, depending on the particular model and model year. On most Porsches (with very rare, racing, exceptions) there is a pair of blades on the windshield. But those two blades may be different in size and in curvature, so when replacing your wipers with aftermarket blades check the application guides which will tell you exactly which two blades you need. Aside from the difference in size and curvature wipers come in 3 general types: Bracket, Beam and Hybrid. The bracket type is the traditional wiper with a frame supporting the blade. This frame is designed to follow the windshield’s curvature and press the rubber blade onto the glass, but it is higher profile and can trap insects, road debris, and/or ice in its components.
The beam type uses a single strip of curved metal within the blade to keep the blade’s edge pressed against the glass.

Sep 2016
As the name implies, hybrid blades are a combination of the above. They use a plastic shell that acts as the frame but with a lower profile. The shell is also aerodynamically designed to keep the blade against the glass even at high speeds.
And then you have a variety of brands to choose from, such as Bosch, Rain-X, Michelin, etc., etc.
I personally like and recommend the Bosch ICON and the Rain-X Latitude (in that order). They both have excellent wiper qualities but Bosch recently reformulated their blades with “Clear Max 365”, which they claim resists ozoneinduced cracking of the material longer
than the competition. Only time will tell if those claims are right, but I’ll be wiping away rain and love bugs in the meantime.
By the way, you can get them at just about any auto parts store or online for less than $20.00 per blade and they are very easy to install by yourself. GCR 2017 Election Officers and Directors Slate The following candidates have been nominated to run for for 2017 Officer positions: President........................................... Dan Doyle Vice President.................................. Stuart Jarkowski, Paul Raben Secretary.......................................... Bob Varela Treasurer ......................................... Kyle Rathbun
Dan Doyle - President In 2007 I joined Porsche Club of America and have been a member of the Gold Coast Region (Zone 12) for the past nine years. Shortly after joining GCR I became involved in the Driver’s Education Program. After much work and study I became a PCA Instructor in 2012. I enjoy giving back to the Porsche community as an instructor to this day. I began my “public service” with GCR as a 2nd Alternate Board Member in 2011. In 2012 I became a “real” Board Member. Being a Board Member gave me an opportunity to interact in a different way with all of the great people I’ve met in GCR. In 2014, in addition to being a Board Member, I became the Driver Education (DE) Chairman, a job I performed through 2015. Also in 2015, I continued my public service with GCR as Vice President, a position that will continue through 2016. For 2017, I am honored to serve as GCR’s President. I look forward to serving in this new capacity, the challenges it will bring and seeing everyone at upcoming GCR events!
.
Stuart Jarkowski - Vice President
I am running for Vice President of the Gold Coast Region PCA. I purchased my first Porsche in 2007 and have been a member of our club for the past 10 years. My first Driver’s Ed event was at Homestead and I have been hooked ever since. In 2010 I became a National PCA Instructor and held the DE Registrar position from 2013 – 2016. I am currently the Drivers Ed Chairman and have created an exciting DE Program for 2017. My wife Lisa and I enjoy attending PCA social events and I regularly attend our monthly Board meetings. I look forward to continuing the growth of our club with new and exciting events which engage existing members and attract new members. It is with this vision that I would greatly appreciate your vote as the GCR PCA Vice President in the upcoming election. Thank you for your consideration and, as always, I look forward to seeing everyone at upcoming events.
Paul Raben - Vice President Growing up in Detroit you are born into a car culture, first with big block muscle cars and then, when you have a moment of clarity you realize those cars can only go fast straight! That is when I bought my first Porsche a 1964 356C with a removable hard top. I have had that car for 37 years and during that time I decided I need to join the PCA to become acquainted with other like minded people. I joined Gold Coast Region in 2007 to be part of a club that loves Porsches and to meet new people who are looking for the same

thing. I was very happy with the people, the activities and the friendliness I experienced by becoming a member. Peggy (my wife and associate member) and I attended as many events as we could and helped whenever we could, it was then I decided to become more active in the club. Ed Kohly suggested I help with membership so I became a membership co-chair which meant I would send out welcome letters, order badges, hand out t-shirts and generally help out with new and old members at events. Along with that I would handle email questions from members pertaining to social and driving events. Also, I was the person responsible for sending out the email notices for upcoming events. Eventually I became membership chair which meant that I was the only person handling all of the duties of membership which also include facebook postings, handling issues with PCA National, registration issues members had with clubreg along with all the other tasks I was responsible for. Also, I am in contact with other membership chair persons from around the country to see what they are doing and to share our thoughts. And to this day two years at the job, I really enjoy it and will continue to do the job as long as I can. I am happy to greet each and every new member as they join and inform them of our clubs activities along with making them feel as welcome as I can. I have met so many of you either through emails or at events (cooking hot dogs at the AutoX) and have gotten to know the members. That is why I am running for vice president because I want to do more by being in a position to guide the club in the right direction and to hopefully address and respond to the needs of our members. In doing this I hope to make the experience for the membership enjoyable and exciting for all our fellow members and their Porsches. Thank you, sincerely Paul Raben
Kyle Rathbun - Treasurer Thank you for this opportunity to run for the 2017 Board of Directors. I sincerely appreciate the nomination and look forward to serving. I have continuously been a Gold Coast member since 1975 and previously served either as an officer or on the Board from the late 70s through 2011. I have enthusiastically and proudly served as President, Vice-President, Treasurer, Board Member, Autocross Chair, Membership Chair, Sonnenfest Chairperson, Track Event Chairperson, Chief Driving Instructor (18 years) and served on the committees that started the Drivers Education and 48 Hours of Sebring Club Race. I continue to serve on the Club Race Committee (17 years and counting) as a co-Administrator and again as the Advanced Solo Chairperson. Over the years the Club Race has made a huge contribution to the financial security of our region.
I would like to assume the duties of Treasurer again to increase the controls and accountability of our
funds and to assist the Board of Directors in the continued growth and success of our region. Please consider me for your Treasurer so I may continue to serve in our Club’s best interest. Kyle J. Rathbun
The following members are running for the open board positions: Roger Fabel, Howard Jacobs, Dottie Kidd, Jake Kooser, Peter Olliviere, and Bobby Varela
Roger Fabel - Director
Dottie Kidd- Director
While in high school I entered my first rally with a sports car club in Pompano Beach. During the rally I saw a 356 and decided I would like to own a Porsche. After college, military service, raising two boys, and 37 years later I was able to fulfil my dream. In 2001 my wife and I purchased our first Porsche, a GR Boxster S. It did not take long until we came across an autocross where Mike and Diana Hansen gave us an overview of the club and a week later we attended Zonefest. Not bad timing after waiting so long for our fantastic car. We got involved quickly and helped with the social and technical activities. We were lucky to be part of the planning and tech team for the Tampa and Hersey Parades along with our local Zonefest, Rennfest, Rolex 24 and many other PCA events. Three years later I was elected to the board and then became vice president and president. During my term as president I was treated for cancer and saw how the people in our club are very supportive. When my wife had her stroke I could write a book about the help we received from members to provide assistance during these challenging times. After being president I became the Kassette editor and have enjoyed taking it from a one page b/w to 40 color pages over the last 10 years. I also serve on the 48 Hour Club Race Committe as the Media Chair. I would like to be considered for a board position so that I can continue to give back and help the club grow meeting the needs of our members.
Many of you know me from my involvement with the GCR Autocross program; however, it was also my privilege to serve as Treasurer for Gold Coast Region in 2012 & 2013. I served (and am still serving) as GCR Autocross Registrar and Co-chair from 2002-2016 and as a Board Member 2010-2011 as well as 2014-2016. My husband Steve and I were honored to receive GCR’s Family of the Year in 2004 and again in 2012, as well as GCR Enthusiasts of the year awards. In addition, we were honored to receive the National Family of the Year award from the Porsche family at the 2015 Parade in Indiana. We also recently served as co-chairs of the highly successful 2013 Zonefest which was part of GCR’s 50th anniversary activities and the 2016 Multi-Region Zonefest in Sebring which was a wonderful event. I have been actively involved with Gold Coast Region over the past eighteen years and am always willing to help wherever needed. I retired from the US Postal Service, and prior to that was a Bookkeeper/Office Manager for several private employers and bring a high level of organizational skills to the club. After the death of my son Timmy I became actively involved with The Compassionate Friends, a grief support group for parents whose children have passed. In addition to the above, I assist Steve, our Zone 12 Representative, and attend events in other Regions and Zones You can find me at most events driving my blue 944S2 or Steve’s GT3. I love participating in all types of local events, as well as National and Regional events such as Parade and Zonefest. Besides everything Porsche, I enjoy our Tennessee mountain home, semi-retirement, and my two granddaughters Riley and Bella. I look forward to continuing to serve Gold Coast Region for many more years.
Howard Jacobs - Director I am celebrating my tenth year of PCA membership within the Gold Coast family, driving my second Porsche, a 2009 Turbo Cab. I am currently on the Board of Directors for 2015 and look forward to serving in 2016. My passion within the region for the past 3.5 years is Drivers Education and racing, although many of you have seen me at social events or helping out in the Porsche Corrals in both Daytona and Sebring. I have participated in almost every Gold Coast PCA track event since January 2012 becoming a PCA National DE Instructor in November 2013. I also try to attend as many track events outside our region as possible and in 2013 I was fortunate enough to drive at events at both Watkins Glenn and NOLA. In 2014 and 2015, I added COTA, Barber to the tracks I have personally experienced. In 2013 I won the Gold Coast Region Rookie of the Year award and currently sit on our DE committee. While attending all of the board meetings this year as well as all but two meetings in past 3 years, I have realized that our Board of Directors comes from vastly different backgrounds, but all of us have the same passion and/or addiction to Porsche and the Gold Coast family. We are committed to providing an environment where ALL our members can continually look forward the next PCA event whether a Sunday drive for Stone Crabs, a weekend Drivers Education, a Professional race in Daytona or a getaway to Le Mans. It is with this same passion for Porsche and the Gold Coast Region that I know I can continue to be a valuable Board member if voted in again. As always, I look forward to serving in any way possible.
Jake Kooser- Director
I was born in Houston, Texas in 1968 and grew up in the deserts of Arizona and New Mexico. I learned early on in my driving career how much fun could be had in the twisty mountain roads of nearby Colorado. Most of the vehicles I have owned were air-cooled Volkswagens, from a 40-horsepower 1959 that was mostly rust by the time I got it, to a ‘modern’ fuel-injected 1971 Squareback, so a rear-engine rear wheel drive vehicle really suits me. I finally got my first Porsche about 3 years ago, a 1986 Carrera 3.2 that the previous owner ‘dressed up’ as a 964. I really didn’t know the difference at the time, and got a great deal on what has ended up being a great car. One of the first things I realized quickly was the 911, with its additional horsepower, is not just a ‘glorified VW’. I signed up for a Driver’s education event within the first week of buying the car, and had a great time at PBIR, so much so that I have continued to attend DE events and was recently promoted to being a solo driver. I hope to continue with the DE program and become an instructor someday. I also really enjoy Autocross with the club, having been class champion the last 2 years in a row.
Bios continued I really enjoy participating in all the events the club puts on, even if it’s just as a volunteer. I have worked the grid at the 48 hours for the last 2 years and really enjoy working with everyone from the various regions. I was named 2015 Enthusiast of the Year and hope to be able to contribute more to keeping the club as enjoyable and fun as I have found it to be.
Peter Olliviere- Director I have been a Porsche Club of America member since 2000, and for the most part have enjoyed the cars, the people, and the experience that involvement in this club brings. No matter what you enjoy about Porsches, the club provides a venue for it. All that’s asked of you in return is to occasionally volunteer to help facilitate the club’s events. When I enjoy something I get involved to the best of my ability. With a couple of exceptions I have attended every Board meeting over the last few years. I have taken the time to do that because I am interested in the direction the club takes. Attending the meeting as a member allowed me to truly understand the Club, the people, and the mindset of the Board Members. It also allowed me to get involved and give direct input into and about decisions the Board made. It wasn’t long before I found that I had an interest in Concourse and became the Assistant Chair for the Concourse Committee. I get great satisfaction from assisting members who have never
Bobby Varela- Director I was born in Miami, Florida in 1972, and fortunate to have grown up with a father who was a factory trained Porsche technician with an absolute passion for Porsche and its integrity for performance. Of course, it was only natural that the first car I learned to drive was a Porsche 911. I was the proud owner of my first Porsche at the age of 16, a black 944. I have also owned a Porsche 911 and a Boxster. I have been ambitiously employed in the European automotive industry for over 26 years with well-renowned companies as Eckler’s Industries (Porsche Tech), Renntech (Marketing Manager), KW Parts (Business Development Coordinator), Champion Motorsport (Service Director) and Foreign Affairs Motorsport (General Manager). I have been a PCA member since the early 1990s. I was awarded Rookie of the Year 1993, won Sonnenfest (Pre-Zonefest Multi-Regional Event) overall in 1994, Enthusiast of the Year, Family of the Year in 1995 and Zonefest overall winner this year. I have served as a Membership, Social & Club Race Volunteer chairman, and have spearheaded GCR’s largest membership drive that helped launch the now larger magazine styled Die Porsche Kassette and the well-attended PCA Florida Region’s Collier Museum Tour. I have also served as a PCA instructor & Autocross champion for many years. I have many years of instructing and racing experience at Sebring, Homestead, Road Atlanta and Roebling Road. I am currently restoring a 1992 968 with my brother Jared. In addition, I am managing a build of a 1996 993 RS Clone for a customer. In my new role as a Board of Director, I will always vote with the members’ best Porsche interest in mind.
