President’s Corner Dan Doyle - President

Hello, everyone!! September promises the beginning of the post-summer driving season. On September 8-9 we recommend attending the Kids Racing for Life event at Sebring International Raceway. This is not a GCR event but is the first driving opportunity of the season. It’s also for a good cause! Kids with major illnesses and their families get a chance to forget their problems for a while and enjoy the track. What could be better?!!!

the time to join other Porsche fans and talk about your favorite subjects: your car and Porsche! Also, we have our Thursday Socials on the third Thursday of every month where you can do the same thing! Please check your emails and the calendar on our website for updated times and locations. These socials are a great way to get to know new members and make them feel welcome!

On September 29 we will also be having a Chili Cookoff / New Member social at Carlin Park in Jupiter. Please check our flyer, the website and your email for details. Come on out and see who can cook the best chili, attend the concours school, autocross school, and orientation for new members along with a free gift for new members. As usual, Porsches & Pancakes is on the first Saturday of the month. Please take

Drive safe! Dan

here did summer go? It is hard to believe summer is over and school is back in session. The good news is that Gold Coast provides activities yearround for its members. One of our most popular events is our Drive and Dine. Featured on the cover and pages 10-11 are details of our recent trip to Sanibel. The trip was planned by Rick Veingrad and turned out to be a fantastic adventure for the GCR members. If you have a special location for a similar event, please let our Social Committee know. We are always looking for new locations to visit and enjoy the fellowship of our Porsche family.

Roger Fabel- Editor

Another very popular event is our Pot Luck Picnic. Check out the details below for a special time at Carlin Park. If you are still in a party mode after a day at the park, head to Broward for an evening of blues and jazz. Details will be on the web and in your e-mail. This will be the third year of great music provided by Frank Spangler and several other Grammy Award winning musicians. The election for 2019 officers and board members of Gold Region PCA will start in November so we have listed the bios of the members running for those posi-

tions. You will receive instructions in your e-mail about the voting process. If you would like to get involved with the club, we welcome members to our monthly board meetings. If you would like to attend, please contact one of our board members for more details. This months meeting will be held in Broward county on September 13th at 6:30. We would like to welcome a new Porsche specialist to West Palm Beach, 9 Auto Motion. Owner Gorden Wardel has over 35 years in Porsche road and race car experience. See you at the park, Roger

Sanibel Drive & Dine Rick Veingrad, GCR member After meeting at 8am in Sunrise, about fifty Gold Coast PCA members drove their Porsches (OK, we had a few other makes too) over to the Ft Myers/Sanibel area for Lunch. Most participants joined us for the overnight, while some just came for the day. Lunch was enjoyed at Lighthouse Restaurant & Bar, a waterfront seafood restaurant with pale woods, ceiling fans, a large dining porch & lounge. The restaurant was a hit, with their excellent food, service and fantastic waterfront views at the marina. After lunch we headed to the Sanibel Harbour Marriott Resort. The staff at the hotel arranged the use of one floor in the covered garage for parking.

After checking in, many participants enjoyed the use of the pool, and of course, the bar area adjacent to the pool for the afternoon. At 6:45 we all drove to dinner held at Charley’s Boathouse Grill on Ft Myers Beach, a roomy restaurant in a converted boathouse providing a relaxing space for elevated eats & drinks. The restaurant sat the group in a private dining room overlooking a canal. The restaurant specializes in steaks & seafood and also includes an endless Salad Bar too. After dinner, many members went back to the resort lounge for the remainder of the evening. After breakfast at the Hotel on Sunday, I was joined by members on a ride to

Captiva Island. The caravan of cars stopped for pictures on the Sanibel causeway adjacent to the bay, then a scenic drive to beautiful Captiva, followed by a stop at Periwinkle Place on Sanibel Island (Sanibels largest shopping village of local unique island shops) Our final stop on our way back home was to Sun Harvest. Sun Harvest is a stop for Florida citrus, fresh juice, specialty foods, baked goods, ice cream, and gifts. They pack, sell, and ship their fruit. The stop may also have something to do with the Free juice samples in store, not to mention the vanilla & orange ice cream cones (yum!). After this wonderful stop that everyone thoroughly enjoyed, we drove back home. Photos by Dennis Lai

GCR 2019 Election Officers and Directors Slate The following candidates have been nominated to run unoposed for 2019 Officer positions: President........................................... Stuart Jarkowski, Steve Kidd Vice President.................................. Christy Brigman, Paul Raben Treasurer ......................................... Kyle Rathbun Secretary.......................................... Dottie Kidd

Stuart Jarkowski - President My name is Stuart Jarkowski and I am running for President of the Gold Coast Region PCA. I purchased my first Porsche in 2007 and have been a member of our club for the past 10 years. My first Driver’s Ed event was at Homestead and I have been hooked ever since. In 2010 I became a National PCA Instructor and held the DE Registrar position from 2013 – 2016. I then held the Drivers Ed Chairman position from 2016 & 2017. I also held the Vice President position in 2017 & 2018 and am looking forward to leading the way forward as President if elected. I look forward to continuing the growth of our club with new and exciting events which engage existing members and attract new members. It is with this vision that I would greatly appreciate your vote as the GCR PCA President in the upcoming election. Thank you for your consideration and, as always, I look forward to seeing everyone at upcoming events. Steve Kidd - President Steve Kidd has been a member of PCA since 1972, and has served in PCA Regional, Zone and National positions for the last 20+ years. Some of the highlights of Steve’s PCA service include, but are not limited to : • Zone 12 Representative for the 10 PCA regions in Florida, Puerto Rico and parts of Alabama and Mississippi. • Vice President and later as President of Gold Coast Region (GCR) • Served on the Board of Directors for GCR • Autocross Chair and instructor for GCR since 2003. • PCA National DE instructor since 1986 and helped countless members become acquainted with tracks in the Southeast • PCA Concours Judge at National and

Regional events, including Porsche Parade and Werks Reunion. • Served on the Club Race Committee for both the 48 hours of Sebring and Oktoberfast (Daytona) Club Races • Multi-region event co-chair (Zonefest) and assistance with Rennfest and Spring Thing (Zone 3) • Assistance in just about every type of activity and event including charity, rally, social, planning and club administration. • Steve’s service has been recognized with numerous awards including GCR enthusiast of the year, four times GCR Family of the Year (with wife Dottie), and recognition by PCA National as PCA Family of the Year in 2015. • Steve has attended 9 PCA parades, countless Zonefests and Multi-regional activities and events ….always volunteering, assisting and garnering new ideas to incorporate into future GCR events. Steve’s experience, leadership, innovation and vision for a great GCR (especially with Parade coming to Boca Raton in 2019) make him the best candidate for President in 2019. Some of Steve’s ideas are to see that the entire region is served with events, make sure new and current members feel welcome, and restore popular activites. Cristy Brigman - Vice President Christy joined the Gold Coast Region of the Porsche Club of America in 2013, when she and her husband purchased their first Porsche, a 2006 Cayman S. She was originally drafted into volunteer service by Ed and Beena Kohly, who were the President and Social Chair at the time. In 2017, at the request of President Dan Doyle, she became even more active in the club, co-chairing the social committee, serving on the election committee, and hosting monthly board meetings at her home. During her time as Social Chair, she has lent

a hand at numerous club activities and has organized events such as the Key Largo Dine and Drive, the Stone Crab Run, the Picnic, and the Jazz Supper Potluck. She was also responsible for bringing back the monthly Thursday Social Happy Hour to Broward County. Christy is currently running for Vice President at the request of Stuart Jarkowski, and she is happy for the opportunity to continue to serve the GCR, as she feels that the Board should include someone with a background from Social, so that all club member interests can be represented. She has experience sitting on boards, including serving as the President of her condominium association for five years. In her work life, Christy is the Chief Litigation Counsel of a large insurance company, where she runs a law practice of 30 lawyers and staff. In her free time, she enjoys traveling with her husband, Jeff, lounging with their 2 cats, Loki and Oz, and zipping around town with the top down in her 2009 Carrera S Cabriolet. Paul Raben - Vice President Paul Raben has been a member of Gold Coast Region for 11 years and in that time has been an active member working as membership chair and most recently as a director. As membership chair his responsibilities include welcoming new members, fulfilling badge requests, addressing questions from members, sending emails, reports to Roger at the Kassette and communicating with PCA national. Last year he was elected to the Board of Directors which gave him a vote to help the club and its members and is now running for Vice-President. Paul has gone from being a new member with his wife Peggy to volunteering at numerous events to being membership co-chair. Paul became membership chair when the chairperson moved on. In that time, he and his wife worked at social events, zone events, Auto

crosses and most recently at Parade. Paul also has taken on the responsibility of Volunteer chair for 48 Hours at Sebring and Peggy is Co-chair for the Goodie Store at 48 Hours. Many of you have met Paul or emailed him to help with a membership problem whether it’s not receiving emails or the Kassette, or questions about upcoming events and registration issues on clubregistration. He feels it’s important as Membership chair and a Director to respond to any and all requests in a timely manner and resolve the issue as quickly as possible. Paul enjoys the positions he holds and will always be a hard-working member of Gold Coast Region for years to come. Recently Paul and Peggy attended their first Porsche Parade to get a glimpse of what the club does on a national level to bring that knowledge back to GCR PCA. Paul and Peggy enjoy attending events in their 356C they’ve owned for 39 years. Dottie Kidd - Secretary Many of you know Dottie Kidd from her involvement with the GCR Autocross program and volunteering at many Gold Coast events in addition to the following;  PCA Member for over twenty years  Autocross Registrar and cochair for fifteen years  Director for five years  Treasurer for two years  Co-chair for Zonefest 2013 (our 50th Anniversary)  Chair for Zonefest 2016 in Sebring  Gold Coast Region Family of the year with my husband Steve Kidd four times  Gold Coast Region Enthusiast  PCA National Family of The Year during the 2015 Porsche Parade  Attending nine Porsche Parades (Florida, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Georgia, Texas, Vermont, Indiana, Spokane, and most recently this year in Missouri) Dottie has been actively involved with Gold Coast Region over the past twenty years and always willing to help wherever needed. She

retired from the US Postal Service, and prior to that was a Bookkeeper/Office Manager/Executive Secretary for several private employers and bring a high level of organizational skills to the club. After the death of her son Timmy she became actively involved with The Compassionate Friends, a grief support group for parents whose children have passed. In addition to the above, she assisted her husband Steve Kidd while he was a Zone 12 Representative and loves attending events in other Regions and Zones. You can find Dottie at most events driving her blue 944S2 or Steve’s GT3. She loves participating in all types of local events, as well as National and Regional events such as Parade and Zonefest. Besides everything Porsche, Dottie enjoys their Tennessee mountain home, semiretirement, and their two granddaughters Riley and Bella who, by the way, are PCA Junior Members. She looks forward to continuing to serve Gold Coast Region for many more years to make Gold Coast Region one to be proud of. Kyle Rathbun - Treasurer Kyle is current Treasurer, and would be honored to continue serving as Treasurer of The Gold Coast Region (GCR). To say that Porsche and PCA CGR are his passion may be an understatement. Kyle joined GCR in late 1975 after purchasing his first Porsche, a 914 2.0. Since joining, he has served in various capacities, either as an Officer or on the Board from the late 70’s through 2011, and has been your Treasurer since 2016, when he accepted the call to serve mid-term. He has ethically, enthusiastically and proudly served as President, Vice President, Treasurer, Board Member, Autocross Chair, Membership Chair, Sonnenfest Chairperson, Track Event Chairperson, Chief Driving Instructor (18 years) and served on the committees that started our Drivers Education program and the 48 Hours of Sebring Club Race. Kyle serves on the Club Race Committee (21 years and counting) in the position of Co-Administrator. Over the years he has helped guide the Club Race, which has made such a huge contribution to the financial security of our Region. He would appreciate your vote so that he may continue to administer the duties of

Treasurer, which maintain the controls and accountability of GCR funds, and to assist the Board of Directors in the sustained growth and success of our Region. Kyle and his wife, Deb, just returned from the 2018 Porsche Parade in the Ozarks where he won his 4th National Championship in the Autocross Event. This is the 15th National Parade he has attended. Roger Fabel - Director In 1964 while in high school, Roger entered his first rally with a sports car club in Pompano Beach. During the rally he saw a 356 and decided to own a Porsche in the future. After college, military service, raising two boys, his dream was fulfilled 37 years later. In 2001 he purchased his first Porsche, a GR Boxster S. It did not take long until Roger came across an autocross where Mike and Diana Hansen gave him an overview of the club and a week later he and his wife attended Zonefest. Not bad timing after waiting so long for a fantastic car. They got involved quickly and helped with the social and technical activities. They were lucky to be part of the planning and tech team for the Tampa and Hersey Parades along with the local Zonefest, Rennfest, Rolex 24 and many other PCA events. Three years later Roger was elected to the board, then became vice president and two years later president. While serving he found PCA to truly be about the people. After being president, he became editor the Kassette and has enjoyed taking it from a one-page b/w to 36 color pages over the last 11 years. He is also honored to be on the 48 Hours of Sebring Club Race Committee. Roger would like to be considered for a board position so that he can continue to give back and help the club grow, meeting the needs of the members. With the Porsche Parade being held in our region next year, the club needs a board with Parade experience. Being on the GCR planning committee Roger will continue to vote for more social driving events that are the most popular events held in Gold Coast. Thank you for your support of our club.

Ian Gerada - Director Ian Gerada is the CEO of Connectica LLC, a boutique style Search Engine Optimization / Digital Marketing Agency that specializes in getting its customers website to rank on that all elusive first page of Google. Ian was brought out to the U.S.A in 1999 by a large telecommunications company in order to head up their data encryption team. After the dot com crash of 2000 Ian started Connectica, it has since grown to be one of the foremost SEO companies in the region. Ian lectures on SEO, Social Media, and Digital Trends on a regular basis. He holds a PhD in Computer Science. Ian has settled in Coral Springs with his wife Jane, three children and Hamish the family dog, devoting his time to Family, Ice Hockey, and his love of cars, Porsche In Particular. He is an active member of the PCA and enjoys attending many of the social events that the club has to offer. He is currently the Chairman of the Tamarac North Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce. Randy Gananathan - Director My dream was a Porsche 356. Too young to buy a 356 new, I forgot my dream until much later, just after ordering my three pedal 6-speed custom Cayenne. Attending my first Gold Coast Region event without a Porsche, I car pooled with a member needing a navigator and after our lunch stop, he said “why don’t you drive my 911” and I couldn’t believe his kindness! That has been the camaraderie I’ve experienced at PCA and why I give back as much as I can to the club and the people who make it truly welcoming. I have found my dream car, a one owner 1963 B-Coupe in my favourite Champagne Yellow. My 356 brings joy every time I drive it and so many people take their photos with my car wherever I go. Besides my 356, I own four other Porsches, a first year 1983 944, a 1991 Carrera C4 Cab (964), the Cayenne and my newest addition, my oldest Porsche, a 1956 P133 Porsche Diesel Tractor that I am restoring! As a 356 Registry and GCR member, I’ve been hosting monthly Porsches & Pancakes + 356 breakfasts in Palm Beach for a few years. I just won the Betty Jo

Turner Award for best newsletter as editor for Provinz magazine, a full colour 48-page monthly newsletter printed and mailed to over 4,100 Upper Canada Region members at Porsche Parade 2018. As PCA National’s, SUV Registry Advocate, I am spearheading PCA’s newest initiative, the Safari Education program. I’ve been a Concours judge at the past three Porsche Parades, Rennsport Reunions, Concours Chairman at UCR and judged at GCR’s Porsches by the Bay. I ask for your vote as it would be an honour to serve you on Gold Coast Region’s Board of Directors. Dale Huber - Director My name is Dale Huber and I’m running for Director of the Gold Coast Region PCA. I became a member when we purchased our Porsche two years ago. We are the second owners of the 2004 Boxster which we adopted from a friend in Boston. We feel fortunate that when he purchased his 911, he trusted us with his Boxster. When people ask what I like best about our Porsche, I always answer “the people we have met through PCA”. I am a native Floridian, born right here in Broward County. My professional career began with the public accounting firm, Ernst & Young. From there I worked with various organizations run by Wayne Huizenga. First at Blockbuster during its heyday, and then as part of his sports empire, at Sports Channel Florida (now Fox Sports Florida). I recently retired after almost a decade as Controller at a mid-sized privately held company in Sunrise. This has afforded me more time to be involved with PCA. If elected, my commitment to the Gold Coast Region members, is to work with the Board to continue to offer events that help members enjoy their cars, but to also interact with other members and make great friends. I also believe we should make an even stronger effort in the next year to use our events to support charities whenever possible. Thank you for your consideration.

Peter Ollivier- Director I have been a member of the Gold Coast Region for the last 18 years. During this time, I have served the Club in several capacities. I have acted as Sponsor Chair, Concours Chair, Concours Judge, Member of the Board of Directors, Advocate for the Transaxle Cars, Manager of Porsches by the Bay in 2017, originator of the Gold Coast Classic Car Show in 2017, and Eurofest this year. My Porsche interest are centered around the Transaxle Cars, 924, 944, 968, and 928 In the Capacity of advocate for these cars, I assist and act as a resource to members, both in Gold Coast and in other regions that have or are considering purchasing one off these great cars. In the past this was like being the Westinghouse Repair Man, lonely, but in the last three years these cars have exploded in popularity and are generating more and more interest. I have served on the Gold Coast Regions Board of Directors for the last two years and sincerely hope that my involvement has led to a high level of enjoyment for the members in Club events. My position as it relates to the Club, is that first and foremost it should be fun. This is not rocket science, it’s a hobby, and should give pleasure to those that choose to take part. My goals if I should be reelected to the board, would be to continue creating the type of events that the membership wants and enjoys. We must also recognize that as a Club we need to be more active in doing good in our communities. Truth be told if elected or not, I will still work within the Club to achieve those goals. Bob Varela - Director I first joined Gold Coast Region Porsche Club back in 1976 but only stayed as a member for 2 years. I am a factory- trained Porsche Master Technician and owner of Foreign Affairs Motorsport serving South Florida for 40 years. I purchased my first Porsche in 1976, a 1975 911 Targa, that had been in an accident. I joined the club again in 1985 and have been an active member since. I have owned over 20 Porsche’s and currently drive a 991 C4S. I have been the President of Porsche Owner’s Club and held these positions in Gold Coast Region PCA: Chief of Tech since 1994 to present,

Vice President 1994, past President 1995 & 1996, Board of Director; 1991, 1992, 1993, 1997, 2011, 2012, 2013, Secretary 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018. I was awarded Family of the year and Enthusiast of the year twice. In 1994, Dick Kelson, president of Suncoast Region and I helped spearhead organizing the first 48 Hours of Sebring Club Race and served on the 48 Hour at Sebring Club Race Committee for 15 years. I have raced over 100 PCA Club Races and have been PCA AutoX Champion in two separate classes along with twotime Porsche Owner’s Club 996 GT3 Cup Race Champion. My repair shop is 1 of 6 independent shops in North America to become a member of Porsche Cars North American aftermarket council. We have received the Broward County Emerald Award for Environmental Excellence. We are the longest continuous sponsor of Gold Coast Region PCA and longest continuous advertiser in the Kassette magazine. If elected to the Board of Directors, I will continue to help support the club and hold events our members are interested in.

Tech Corner :

The Fuel Pump Article by Pedro P. Bonilla, Tech Editor

On a previous Tech Article we discussed the fuel injection system, now we delve deeper into it and discuss the fuel pump in particular. The fuel pump, as it name indicates, pumps fuel from the tank to the engine. It uses pressurized fuel lines which end at the fuel rail* where the injectors vaporize the liquid gasoline so it mixes with the incoming air from the intake plenums. The mix then goes through the intake valves and into the cylinders where the spark plugs make it all ignite. (*) In direct fuel injection (DFI) cars the injectors are located right on the cylinder walls and vaporize fuel straight into the combustion chambers. Most of the older (fuel injected) Porsches (up to the 993) had an external fuel pump, meaning that it was located between the tank (up front) and the engine (at the rear). In some cases like on the 924 and 928 there were two pumps. A prepump and an external pump. But starting with the 1997 water-cooled Boxster 986 and then with the 1999 Carrera 996, Porsche installed a single submerged pump. Yes, it is inside the gas tank! Although it may seem counter-intuitive,

submerging the electric fuel pump in the gasoline tank puts the component least likely to handle fuel vapors well farthest from the engine and submersed in a cool liquid which is less likely to start a fire. Liquid gasoline does not ignite, only its vapors in the presence of oxygen. If the fuel pump stops working your Porsche is not moving. When a fuel pump starts to go, the engine may still get enough gas to keep it going, but a failing pump will not heal itself and will eventually stop operating altogether. If you are alert, you may be able to catch a failing pump before it goes out completely. So what are the signs? The most common one is when you’re on the road at higher speeds (60+ MPH), the car starts jerking but then resumes normal driving. Check your gauges because this could mean that you are running out of gas literally, or it could signal a failing fuel pump. A failing pump can also result in lower MPGs, so be alert if all of the sudden your car becomes a gas hog. Porsche fuel pumps from 1997 through 2008 generally have a humming sound that can be heard by the driver if your hearing is better than mine. Many times though, a pump that’s starting to fail will develop a VERY loud, high-pitched whirling noise which even I can hear! If you suspect that your fuel pump is on

its last legs a simple pressure test can be performed to determine if the correct fuel pressure exists at the rails. But even if there is less than optimal pressure it may

not be just the pump. A bad fuel pressure regulator and or bad fuel lines can also affect a fuel pressure reading. Most of the newer Porsche fuel pumps are integrated into the fuel sending unit which consists of the electric fuel pump, the filter, the strainer and the electronic sensor used to determine the amount of fuel in the tank. In the newer Porsche sports cars it is located under the car’s battery and accessed via a panel on top of the fuel tank. If you decide to tackle it yourself, let me remind you that you will be dealing with fuel and fuel vapors. You should be in a very well ventilated area and be extremely cautious of sparks that could be generated from the use of power tools. It may be more advisable to let your trusted Porsche techs tackle the job as they will run diagnostic tests to make sure that the issue has been precisely identified and they also have specialized tools for each particular job. Replacing one of the least expensive will cost several hundred dollars, newer ones are way more than that. As you can see above, it is not fun work replacing the fuel pump, especially at 3:30 AM in one of the pits at Sebring during a DE weekend. A bad fuel pump can certainly ruin your day!
